Empowerment Through Craft

The Nest Community, a pioneering women's charity focused on purposeful connections through craft, celebrates its triumphant relocation to a new facility at The Sheds, Unit 2A, 264 South Pine Rd, Brendale.

This strategic move, made possible by the generous support of property developers Doug and Jenny Fisher, directors of Wattlerun, and various community leaders, signifies an exciting growth phase for the organization. Roz Fenson, CEO of The Nest Community, expressed delight at the new Brendale home, emphasizing the opportunity to broaden their impact and empower more women through craft. Established in 2012, The Nest Community has grown organically with a commitment to values like sustainability, skill-sharing, social connection, and hand-making skills. Originally sustained through low-cost workshops and surplus craft supply donations, The Nest evolved into The Nest Haberdashery, a retail outlet for reclaimed textile resources. In 2019, with support from Wesley Mission, Roz Holt resumed the role of CEO to steer the organization toward becoming a registered charity. The Nest Haberdashery became the heart of the organization, leading to the launch of The Exchange Project in 2021, a free mentoring program for vulnerable teenage girls. By 2022, the haberdashery hosted up to 200 women weekly, but challenges arose due to limited space. Roz Holt highlighted the need for a commercial space with ample floorspace, parking, and accessibility. The Nest found its perfect match when it met Doug and Jenny Fisher, passionate directors of Wattlerun. Moving from a 30-square-meter space in Everton Park to over

Volunteers enjoying a cuppa between duties 150 square meters in Brendale required extensive effort and volunteered hours. Supported by community leaders, The Nest successfully relocated and opened The Nest Haberdashery on September 11, 2023, experiencing a significant increase in trade and diverting thousands of fabric meters and haberdashery items from landfill. The Nest continues its commitment to craft workshops and, in December 2023, inaugurated the Gladys Mary Studio, a multi-purpose space supporting The Exchange Project and emerging workshop hosts. As The Nest Community enters its 10th year in 2024, it actively recruits volunteers who share a passion for crafts and textiles. For those interested in volunteering, applications are welcome via https://www.nestcommunity.org.au/volunteer/. The Nest Community remains a beacon of collective action, fostering a circular economy and preserving resources within a community invested in unconditional giving.

Community Unites in Generosity

Calling All Handstanders! Help Break Records

In our December editions, you may recall a story published across our magazines regarding fiveyear-old Emily Borg, a cherished member of the Local Albany Creek legend, 17-year-old James community, who tragically passed away last year. Wraight from Padua College has been making big Emily was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, an aggressive waves with a unique approach to raising awareness childhood cancer, and underwent intensive chemotherapy and funds for the domestic and family violence and surgery. However, complications arose after a successful foundation, Small Steps 4 Hannah. tumor removal, leading to a rare infection that her weakened immune system couldn't overcome. In honor of Emily, her family organized a Christmas toy drive for children at the Queensland Children’s Hospital which exceeded all expectations. What began as an aim to contribute 500 gifts for the children at the hospital, resulted in an overwhelming collection of over 1500 presents, marking an incredible threefold achievement. The week before Christmas, these gifts found their way to the Queensland Children's Hospital, bringing joy and comfort to the young patients. Nurses at the hospital, particularly those who had cared for Emily, gratefully accepted the generous donations. The outpouring of support was so immense that the donated presents surpassed available storage space. In response, a decision was made to continue the spirit of giving throughout 2024 by pledging monthly donations of The beautiful 100 presents to the Oncology ward, a Emily Borg touching gesture in memory of Emily. Emily's parents Emma and Brodie would like to thank everyone who contributed to Emily's toy drive. Their appreciation extends to family, friends, colleagues, and the wider community who were moved by Emily's story. Emma and Brodie would also like to thank the businesses;Whisk & Grind Cafe, LJ Hooker Property Connections, Professionals Priority Ferny Hills and The Toy Outlet & Sunshine Home for their support. A shout out also goes to Reg Behrens who captained Emily's Great Cycle Challenge team earlier this year and subsequently raised and donated $650 worth of presents, with the help of Team Emily. Finally massive gratitude is extended to, Aunty Sarah, who orchestrated the drive, played a pivotal role in collecting and delivering the gifts to the hospital nearly every day, showcasing immense dedication and kindness.

Small Steps 4 Hannah was established by Sue and Lloyd, parents of the late Hannah Clark, and her three children who tragically lost their lives when their car was set on fire by Hannah's husband on February 19, 2020. The foundation has tirelessly worked to raise awareness about domestic violence, resulting in legal changes that recognize coercive control as a form of abuse. In the face of a growing incidence of domestic and family violence, the foundation emphasizes the importance of education and awareness. Drawing inspiration from Hannah and her children, who were avid fans of handstands in their own gym, James joined an online challenge – a handstand every day for 19 days that was brought to his attention by local running group Run With Rob. Hoping to use his leverage as a national gymnast, the goal was to raise both funds and awareness for Small Steps 4 Hannah. James created a GoFundMe page and, alongside his mother, embarked on a journey to visit numerous Brisbane landmarks. At each location, he held a handstand for either 19 seconds or took 19 steps on his hands. In his first year, James raised an impressive $1500, and in the second year, the amount nearly doubled to $2500. The culmination of his efforts was marked by a generous $1000 check presented by his college principal to Sue and Lloyd on the final day of the challenge. Determined to extend his support, James is now gearing up to take part in a remarkable endeavour organised by the Small Steps For Hannah Foundation – a Guinness Book of Records attempt to host the largest group handstand ever. Calling on participants from various backgrounds, including gymnasts, dancers, cheerleaders, builders, bakers, and even candlestick makers, Small Steps For Hannah hopes to assemble a group capable of holding a handstand for a mere 5 seconds – with straight legs and locked arms. Scheduled for Sunday, February 18, 2024, at Hannah’s Place Memorial Park in Camp Hill, the record-breaking attempt aims to bring together over 400 handstand enthusiasts. Not only will participants potentially etch their names in the Guinness Book of Records, but they will also contribute to a noble cause by raising funds to combat Domestic and Family Violence. Registration for the event is open, and interested individuals can sign up by scanning the provided QR code or visiting the official event website. So please join this extraordinary initiative, where a few seconds of balance can make a significant impact on the fight against domestic violence.

$22 Million Women’s Football Centre of Excellence Nears Completion

In a significant stride towards promoting women’s sports, the eagerly awaited $22 million Women’s Football Centre of Excellence, situated at the South Pine Sports Complex in Brendale, is on the cusp of reaching its full completion.

The state-of-the-art complex, envisioned to be one of the premier dedicated women's sporting facilities in the nation, is poised to become the new home for the Brisbane Roar’s women's team. With construction efforts in full swing, the purpose-built fields, a vital component of the precinct, are anticipated to be finalized in the upcoming months. Although the Centre of Excellence itself reached completion last year, the fit-out process for the Brisbane Roar's usage is in progress, aligning with preparations for the 2024–25 season. The football precinct will be a hub for excellence, providing top-notch facilities for the women's team to hone their skills. In addition, local club Moreton City Excelsior Football Club, is set to benefit significantly from this initiative with access to dedicated clubhouses and fields. This ground breaking project received support from the Australian Government, which allocated $350,000 under the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program. This program aims to assist councils across the country in implementing local road and community infrastructure projects, generating employment opportunities and fostering enduring benefits for the communities involved. As the final touches are applied to this multimillion-dollar

The hand over of the keys for the Centre of Excellence from Council to the Brisbane Roar football precinct, anticipation is high for the positive impact it will have on women's football, community engagement, and the overall sports landscape in Brendale as outlined by Moreton Bay Mayor Peter Flannery. ‘The Matildas took the world game to new heights in Australia last year with their heroic efforts at the FIFA World Cup, and we hope this facility will continue that journey right here in Moreton Bay,’ said Mayor Peter Flannery. ‘It will go a long way to helping City of Moreton Bay address our goal to grow participation in women’s sport locally’ The completion of this facility marks a significant milestone in the journey towards empowering women in sports at both the grassroots and professional levels.

Run With Rob: Going The Distance

By Shane Steele

On New Year’s Eve, Jessica Miller and Vanessa Lisle celebrated the arrival of 2024 somewhat differently to most. Both members of the Run With Rob running club swapped their dancing shoes for trail runners as they participated in the inaugural Glasshouse Standing Backyard Ultra.

A ‘backyard ultra’ (or last one standing) is a form of ultramarathon race where competitors consecutively run the distance (often referred to as a “loop”) of 6.7 kilometres in less than one hour, which is a pace of approximately 100 kilometres per 15 hours. It is a strategic race that does not necessarily reward faster runners. Upon starting, each proceeding loop commences on the hour. So long as runners complete a loop within 60 minutes, they are eligible to undertake another lap. However, they must exercise caution; certainly, running faster provides more time to rest, but they may quickly expel their energy reserves. Running slowly may serve a runner better, but it means longer time on their feet and less time to rest before the next loop getting underway. There is no predetermined end length, or time, in a backyard ultra. Ultimately, the race is over when only one runner is remaining to be the last one standing. This backyard ultra was staged at the base of Wild Horse Mountain in the Glasshouse Mountains, Sunshine Coast. With a starting time of 5:00pm – allowing runners to surpass the marathon distance of 42.2 kilometres by midnight – participants and supporters gathered for a Connection to Country led by Kabi Kabi Elder, Dinnawhan. Under the first blue skies for several days, the race was on. This was Vanessa’s second backyard ultra in less than nine months. Inspired by her love of the race format, Vanessa enjoyed experiencing the Glasshouse Standing Backyard Ultra but admitted, ‘Running throughout the night was a challenge and something I had never tried before, so I was keen to give it a go.’ Conditions were tricky, with heavy rainfall during the preceding week causing the trail – a combination of 4x4 track as well as single trail – to become a soup of muddy, sandy and rocky terrain for runners. Unfortunately, Vanessa suffered a fall in only her third loop, but showed determination to continue, completing a total of 11 loops before withdrawing. Running almost 74 kilometres, Vanessa said, ‘Belonging to the RWR team helped me a lot and I feel incredibly fortunate to be part of such a supportive run club.’ Jess’ inquisitiveness led her to enter the race. ‘I have always been a bit curious about the backyard ultra format. It really seems to draw people in! So, when Run Queensland announced this event, especially with it supporting such a good cause [Save Our Glasshouse Mountains], I thought, ‘why not?’, and signed up.’ Jess agreed, ‘The trail was a bit of a mess, but just adds to the story of the event. It was a real party event and having so many [RWR] supporters there really built [up] that experience.’ Although not reaching her goal distance, Jess successfully completed 15 loops, exceeding 100 kilometres on foot. ‘During the actual event, the highlight was every time on track you turned that last corner with about 800 metres to go, no matter the time [of day or night], you could see the RWR crew waiting there, cheering you in and it was such a boost! I am very grateful!’ Crew leaders, Mel Murray and Alan Brosnan who are also Page 10 - February 2024, The Eatons Echo

Jessica Miller enjoying some time off her feet in between the 6.7km loops

RWR club members, were vital in supporting Vanessa and Jess every step of the way. More than just a cheer squad, Mel and Alan were responsible for keeping Vanessa and Jess on track with their nutrition and hydration strategies, as well as being ready to respond to their physical and equipment needs. By literally setting up camp, Mel and Alan were efficient and engaged in their efforts for getting their athletes back on the course rehydrated, refueled and refocused throughout the night. Despite the lack of sleep, Mel said, ‘The idea of being surrounded by good friends and inspiring humans who are pushing their physical and mental limits seemed the like the perfect way to welcome in the New Year.’ Mel revealed her highlight was, ‘Witnessing the courage and determination of two women, whom I already knew were strong, but who proved to themselves they are capable of remarkable things, even when it feels hard and takes extreme courage to keep showing up.’ Alan remarked how incredible it was to have so many club members support him in his crewing efforts. ‘My highlight was experiencing the family unit that is RWR. Having so many lovely, kind and supportive people around made crewing so much easier. ‘My experience, well, it was everything I had hoped it to be and more. I got to watch Jess and Vanessa fight through [their] mental barriers. Watching them come in after a lap, looking so fresh and seemingly unfazed. I got to see how truly strong and resilient they both are.’ ‘I say this a lot about RWR, but the community is just amazing, and it is this for which I am most grateful,” said Jess. “Sure, we do a bit of running every now and then, but the friends I have made and support networks I have built through RWR are next level and something I truly cherish.’ N.B. Ultra-endurance athlete, Ryan Crawford, was the last one standing and winner of the Glasshouse Standing Backyard Ultra, completing 23 loops (154.1 kilometres). Bunker Road at Bunyaville

The Northern Suburbs Express: 1966

Thank you to Upper Kedron local Suzi Latta! Whilst doing a good old clean out, Suzi stumbled upon the 6th April, 1966 edition of the old local paper the Northern Suburbs Express. This was a Newspaper that used to circulate around the Northern Suburbs.

Charlie Haire, our young Echo team member at the old military bunker at Bunyaville

If only the trees could talk...I bet they could tell us a few tales about this historical treasure from WW2 located in the Bunyaville Conservation Park!

This military bunker at Bunyaville was assembled by the army in August 1943. It was established as part of an area which was designated as a bomb cemetery and experimental explosive testing ground. The bomb cemetery remained in use until July 1945 and was used by both Australian and American forces. There is a huge bomb crater in the creek below the bunker... There are whispers that the giant crater was from a B-25 Mitchell bomber aircraft that crashed near the Jinker Track.. however those rumours are unsubstantiated .

Spreading Hope Beyond the Holidays

An update from the Albany Creek Lions Club Christmas is behind us for another year and whilst it is a happy time for most families being able to get together, share a meal, exchange gifts and enjoy each other’s company, this does not happen for everyone. In the economic climate that we are living in at the moment, many families are doing it tough, and that includes Christmas. We would very much like to thank every member of our community who purchased a cake or pudding as these funds help us assist those members of the community who need a helping hand. We were very pleased and proud to be able to help out with supplying some groceries and other goods to Encircle who were putting together hampers for those families in our local area put food on the table for Christmas. We know that Christmas is a time for giving, unfortunately special times of the year lose some significance when you are out of work and or have, due to no fault of your own, lost your home etc. Please remember that there are Lions Clubs everywhere and if you find yourself in a situation such as this, please call us and from time to time we can most certainly lend a hand. We are ordinary folk just like you and as they say, ‘there by the Grace of God.’ We could all find ourselves in a similar position. Let us all hope that 2024 sees things ease up for everyone and that those in power gain some insight as to what they should be doing to help as well. Let’s hope the new year brings renewed hope and opportunity for all. Remember, if you find that you have a little free time and would like to help us support our community you would

John and Trish Whitby from the Albany Creek Lions presenting Kim from the Neighbourhood Centre with the groceries be most welcome to join our group and lend a hand, it only takes a couple of extra pairs of hands to spread the load and to help more folks. If you feel you would like to learn more about Lions and what we do, please pick up the phone and give us a call. President Kaye 0477 212 242 or Secretary Graeme 0408 374 719 and we would love to extend an invitation to join us at our first dinner for 2024 on the 21st February. For more information please call. BUILDER - LOUDEN BUILDERS

CENTRAL ELECTRICAL AND DATA

APPRENTICE - OLLIE’S PLUMBING

PLUMBAROUND

David’s extensive 24year career in Building and Construction reflects his journey that began with an apprenticeship at the age of 16. After successfully completing his apprenticeship, he took a significant step in acquiring his builder’s license. At the age of 19 David undertook his first major renovation project on the family’s Queenslander home. This hands on experience laid the foundation for his passion for renovating traditional, heritage and character homes – a passion that has remained constant throughout his career. David continued to build his skills and knowledge by working with other builders, and despite the diverse experience gained from different project and collaborations his interests were drawn to restoration and renovation of homes with historical significance. He then took a bold step forward by establishing his own company, Louden Builders. This move allowed him to leverage his wealth of experiences and expertise to create a business that reflects his commitment to quality craftsmanship and meticulous attention to details. Louden Builders is based in the Grange and Keperra/ Samford working throughout North Brisbane and surrounding areas.

With 16 years experience in the electrical trade, you can be rest assured that Josh Townsend, owner of Central Electrical and Data Pty Ltd (CED) knows what he is doing! After graduating from Mt Maria College, Josh went on to complete an electrical apprenticeship. He found a passion for the trade and in March 2013, along with his wife Samantha, established their own family business, CED. Josh and his team pride themselves on providing quality workmanship, on time and at a reasonable cost. With these admirable traits, it is of no surprise that the business placed second for Brisbane’s Best Electrician poll run by the Courier Mail last year. With the business thriving, Josh now employs four electricians that all live in the local area. As a long-time local, Josh is delighted to be in a position to give back to the community where he can. Every year in CED’s birthday month of March, the team run a communityfocused campaign - giving back to the community where they can. With a no job too big or small policy, CED proudly work with home and business owners, real estates and local builders. They offer a wide range of services from electrical, air conditioning, data and so much more. The team service the whole of the Brisbane and Moreton Bay region.

Meet Lucas, a driven and ambitious Year 12 student from The Australian Trade College North Brisbane, who recently completed his work experience with Ollie's Plumbing. Lukas's dedication and passion for plumbing have now led him to secure a School Based Apprenticeship with Ollie's Plumbing, showcasing the company's commitment to fostering young talent. In this role, he will engage in two days of paid work every week, along with six-week work blocks throughout the year. This hands-on experience will provide Lucas with invaluable on-the-job skills. Simultaneously, he will spend three days a week at The Australian Trade College, working towards his Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) and a Certificate III in Business. Ollie's Plumbing stands as a reputable and trusted provider of professional plumbing services across the Northern suburbs of Brisbane. As an independently operated business, Ollie's Plumbing is dedicated to delivering efficient, professional, and quality plumbing solutions for residential, commercial, and strata properties. Customer service takes precedence, evident through their team of highly skilled and experienced plumbing technicians ready to address plumbing needs promptly, operating 24/7.

Plumbaround was started in 2015 by owners Warwick and Peita Royal. Over the past 8.5 years they have serviced Brisbane and the greater area with everything from the standard plumbing, taps and toilets all the way to commercial maintenance and construction installs. With a team of 16 staff, they pride themselves on quality workmanship, trusted advice and a strong team culture. This gives them the ability to deliver a professional service and plumbing solutions for a variety of issues. Plumbaround is a community minded company who has dedicated time and sponsorships to multiple charities and community initiatives in the local areas surrounding Chermside and Albany Creek. With the motto ‘Your Plumbing, Our Privilege’ this family owned local business has grown and kept staff employed throughout the past 8.5 years. Opportunities have recently seen the business take on projects interstate. The staff now having the option of travel and working away has been a great addition to the company’s offerings. Local Ladies Celebrate Half a Century of Friendship

By Georgia Wright Thursday the 18th January, 2024, marks 50 years since a group of local ladies met while teaching at Ferny Hills State School in 1974. A group who, to this day, remain in close contact and cherish their lifetimes’ worth of memories made together. To commemorate this milestone, the ladies held their annual reunion lunch at the Everton Park Tavern—a tradition they have made sure to continue for all five decades of friendship. Georgia Wright, Echo News’ journalist, was fortunate enough to pop in for this year’s lunch and listen to their beautiful stories. The seven ladies in attendance— Jan Cameron, Elizabeth Kriesch, June Nowitzki, Lesley Twigg, Kath Kaminski, Geraldine McLaughlin, and Wendy Cornford—were more than eager to reminisce on their favourite moments spent together. Wistful and smiling, they shared tales of travelling on dirt roads in “trusty Volkswagen Beetles” to reach the schools they taught at, navigating the 1974 floods together, and even training for a sort of Ninja Warrior program as a means of fundraising for a new school hall! Interestingly, the lunch was as much of a trip down memory lane for the ladies as it was a history lesson for Georgia. She learnt that back in their day, Ferny Hills State School was a two-teacher, one-building school that was considered suitable for country service. It was mortifying, as well, for Georgia to learn that female teachers were formally forbidden to wear Continued on page 5 trousers to work. Instead, skirts and stockings were mandatory uniform. As well, when Elizabeth began her career in 1968 at Virginia State School, she used a chalkboard to teach her students, who each had handheld slates to write notes on. Funny enough, her last leg of teaching was during Covid, when her job was reduced to running classes online via Teams meetings. “Computers hadn’t even been invented when I first started teaching!” Elizabeth explained, shaking her head at how much times have changed. Another huge culture shock took place when the ladies spoke of getting paid in cash, or enveloped cheques that they had to collect from the bank each week, rather than through online bank transfers. But history lessons aside, it was the unconditional love the ladies had for each other and for their careers that shone through most over lunch. Despite many of the ladies having reached retirement, it sounded like a conflicting task for them to leave behind teaching. All seven of the women began working as teachers as soon as they graduated from school and did not switch careers once. All seven, as well, managed to pass on the teaching torch to their children, effectively raising the next generation of passionate teachers! As it turns out, their children have all known each other since birth, as the ladies used to host a playgroup together as young mothers! Forty odd years later, they still remain in contact. Before Georgia took off, the ladies all nodded along as Elizabeth shared with her that the most important thing you can do in life is maintain contact with old friends. She believes that carrying your loved ones through all phases of your life can help you remain in touch with your own identity. For there is no reason to neglect your most treasured memories—and people—no matter how many years have passed. They are part of you, after all. www.echo-news.com.au

Kirst and John Cultivate Community at Cashmere Café

In the heart of Cashmere, a quaint local café, The Blended Collective has transformed into a hub of community and connection under the passionate ownership of Kirst and John. Local to the area, this dynamic couple embarked on an unexpected yet fulfilling journey as proud owners of the café they now lovingly call their own.

Nine months ago, Kirst and John realized their dream of becoming café owners. Previously immersed in their landscaping business, fate took a turn when John’s back issues led them to close that chapter of their lives. The discovery of a café for sale down the road seemed like destiny knocking, and the couple eagerly embraced the opportunity. Jokingly claiming to have ‘come out of semi-retirement,’ Kirst and John found themselves at the helm of a place that goes beyond being just a business. With Kirst‘s background in marketing, a business degree, and her younger years in hospitality, coupled with John‘s landscaping and horticulture expertise, the café became a culmination of their diverse skills and life experiences. For this duo, it‘s more than just about great coffee and food; it‘s about fostering community and connection. Kirst expresses, ‘It’s giving people that sense of belonging. Somewhere they can relax and escape whatever is going on and have a bit of timeout.’ The café exudes a welcoming and chilled ambiance, adorned with lush greenery everywhere—a nod to Kirst’s upbringing with a horticulturist mother and John‘s background in landscaping and horticulture. The place feels like a retreat, offering patrons a soothing escape. Beyond the regular café offerings, the place boasts quirky and cool elements. Kirst’s dad, an artist, contributes to the café’s unique character with his artworks depicting local landscapes, many of which are available for purchase. The café also features local artisan items for sale, supporting the talents of the community. Adding a melodic touch, Kirst’s beloved guitar sits by the counter, inviting visitors Kirst’s Guitar, to strum a chord or two. This open available to all! invitation has resulted in impromptu

performances, delighting customers with local talents. The café retains its great Chef, Mitch, and employs 12 local staff. Kirst and John are keen on expanding their team and welcome inquiries from those eager to join their vibrant community. Open from 6am to 1pm (except Sundays, opening at 7am), the café offers a delightful all-day menu, including various culinary delights which are also available for takeaway. Exciting plans are in the pipeline for the café, including live music, Sunday sessions, Sip and Succulent events, and the ambitious idea of hosting a mini-market on Friday evenings, showcasing local artisan makers. Kirst and John invite everyone to be part of this blooming journey, making the café not just a place to eat but a community to be a part of. Happy New Year!

I hope you had a wonderful Christmas and a relaxing break during January and the holiday season. I’m looking forward to working together to continue delivering for our community in the months and year ahead. Australia Day There is something extra special about citizenship ceremonies held on Australia Day and it is a great privilege to share in the joy and excitement of our newest citizens as they are welcomed as fellow Australians. It‘s a day to celebrate our culture, freedoms, and opportunities, acknowledging that we live in the greatest country in the world. It was an honour to join the citizenship ceremony in Samford, hosted by the Rotary Club of Samford Valley. We welcomed 30 new citizens and had the pleasure of meeting them, along with their family and friends.

Everton News from your State Member for Everton TIM MANDER Australia Day – Citizenship Awards

Social Housing Update

Once again I was honoured to attend the Award Ceremony welcoming our newest Australian Citizens into our local community. These ceremonies give us pause to reflect on the importance of welcoming those who make the commitment to pledge allegiance to our country.

Tim Mander MP with a few of the new citizens at the Australia Day 2024 ceremony

With more than 43,000 Queenslanders desperately waiting for social housing, it was very disappointing to hear the State Government had made no progress in working out how the Pinkenba Quarantine Centre could be used to house those desperate for a roof over their head. This centre has sat dormant for the last two years with 500 beds. When you add this to the $220m that was wasted on the 1000 bed Wellcamp facility in Toowoomba, it’s clear the State Labor government is offering very little but false hope. Additionally, with the costs of private rentals soaring and record low vacancy rates, the situation is becoming more desperate. As the shadow minister for housing, I am determined to increase the supply of houses … in all categories. The LNP has put solutions on the table to ease the Queensland Housing Crisis, including prioritising infrastructure partnerships with local government to unlock more land for housing, unleashing the community housing sector and setting KPIs and delivering social housing projects on-time and on-budget. A TIP TO HELP OUR BEES!...During the summer months there are fewer flowers, food sources and water for the bees. Furthermore, bees may drown as they try to drink from the pools when they do find water. To give our bees a helping hand, why not grate an Apple and add some water to the bowl? The bees will be able to get the sugars from the fruit and drink the water but not drown as they can stand on pieces of fruit. Our bee populations are threatened, let’s give them all the support we can!
