One of Brisbane’s biggest community Christmas events is celebrating its eleventh year and it’s back better than ever.
Bridgeman Baptist’s, Christmas Lights Festival on December 11-13 will feature thousands of lights, two unique shows, food, markets, carnival rides, carollers plus much more.
‘We’re so excited to be welcoming the crowds again to celebrate the season,’ said Senior Pastor Nathan Harris.
‘Christmas is a time for coming together and this is a perfect opportunity to invite family and friends out for a night of joy and fun.’
The festival, which takes place at Bridgeman Baptist Church, 379 Albany Creek Road, Bridgeman Downs, is free with the only costs being food, market items and canival rides.
‘Lights Festival has been an important community event for 11 years now and it’s been special to see how well it’s been received by locals with up to 8,000 thousand joining us across the three-nights last year,’ Harris said.
Since the early 2000’s Bridgeman hosted a well-attended ‘Carols in the Park’ event but in 2014 following several rained-out events pivoted to multifaceted festival which has grown year on year.
The event hit global headlines in 2022 with stories featured in the BBC, The Guardian and The Jerusalem Post amongst others when three camels used for a nativity scene escaped and ventured down a nearby road in the lead up to the event captivating motorists.
‘Cyrus’, ‘Benjamin’ and ‘Morgie’ returned safely and
will be back again in 2024. Joining them will be some of the regions most talented musicians and 400+ volunteers that make the event happen across three nights.
AUSLAN interpreters will be available on night two (12 December) as well as a special ‘low Sensory’ space for those with additional needs. More information can be found at www. bridgeman.org.au/ christmas

This Christmas, the kids will be delighted to hear that Australia Post is adding a touch of holiday magic to the tradition of Santa Mail.
At Santa’s request, kids can now personally deliver their letters to their local Post Office instead of sending them by mail all the way up tp the North Pole.
Young letter-writers can drop off their holiday wishes directly, creating a memorable experience to share with family.
The festive process is simple: kids write a letter to Santa, pack it in an envelope (no stamp or return address required), and hand it in at their local Post Office. In return, each child receives a personal reply from Santa himself, along with a special Pip the Koala Christmas ornament—a keepsake to hang on the tree year after year.
‘We’re thrilled to help Santa make this holiday season even more special,’ said Josh Bannister, Executive General Manager for Retail, Brand, and Marketing at Australia Post. ‘It’s exciting to be part of this tradition, and we can’t wait to see the joy on kids’ faces as they deliver their letters and receive a reply from the North Pole.’
For kids who have already sent their letters by mail, Santa has a plan for them too. They can still visit the Post Office to pick up their Pip the Koala ornament and special letter, ensuring no one misses out on the seasonal magic.
This new Santa Mail experience is part of Australia Post’s mission to bring Christmas magic to communities nationwide, reminding everyone that the holiday season is all about joy, tradition, and togetherness. So head down to your local Post Office today!

Sprite’s journey is one of resilience, loyalty, and a hope that hasn’t wavered, despite the long wait.
For 1,110 days, this remarkable greyhound has been in foster care, her days filled with moments of joy, play, and countless attempts at winning over hearts. But as time goes on, Sprite’s biggest wish remains unfulfilled—finding a forever home.

Currently based in Toowoomba, Sprite is under the dedicated care of I Want A Greyhound, Inc. (IWaG), a rehoming organisation that works tirelessly to match these gentle dogs with loving families. Over the years, many greyhounds have found homes, but Sprite, with her boundless energy and zest for life, has somehow been passed over again and again.
Sprite doesn’t fit the ‘couch-potato’ mold that many imagine when thinking of greyhounds. Instead, she’s a lively, whipsmart six-year-old who thrives on activity and would make the perfect companion for an active household. This unique trait, however, has meant she’s often overlooked by families searching for a quieter pet.
‘She’s full of love and personality,’ one foster volunteer shares. ‘Sprite brings joy wherever she goes, but she just hasn’t found her match yet.’ IWaG knows that the right family for Sprite is out there—a family who will cherish her vibrant spirit, embrace her energy, and give her the home she has been patiently waiting for.
The ideal home for Sprite would be one without other pets or young children, where she could have the space and attention she deserves. IWaG is eager to share more about her playful quirks, her intelligence, and the joy she brings to those who know her.
Every share of Sprite’s story is a chance to reach someone who might be looking for a dog just like her. It’s an opportunity to bring awareness to her journey and help ensure that her next chapter is filled with the love and stability she has been yearning for - so please share this story with friends!
If you can offer Sprite a forever home, please email hello@ iwag.com.au, call 0421 298 970 or visit www.iwag.com.au for more information.
With the support of the community, Sprite’s wait for a forever family might finally come to an end. Let’s make sure that after 1,110 days of waiting, Sprite gets the home she deserves.
Last year, we shared the story of Emily’s Tree and were overjoyed by the overwhelming response— thousands of gifts were donated.
This year, we’re thrilled to see the return of Emily’s Tree at Whisk & Grind Cafe, continuing the heartfelt legacy of fiveyear-old Emily Borg.
Emily was a cherished member of our community who tragically lost her battle with neuroblastoma, a rare and aggressive childhood cancer. Her mother, Emma Cantrell, shared, ‘It is with broken hearts and shattered dreams that we share with you that our light and our laughter—our daughter Emily—left us yesterday for her next big adventure.’
Emily’s diagnosis came on March 1st, 2023, after initial signs were mistaken for a viral infection. Further tests revealed a large tumour in her abdomen, which quickly spread to her spine, bones, and head. Despite intensive treatment at Queensland Children’s Hospital, including chemotherapy and a major surgery in June that successfully removed the tumour, Emily succumbed to a rare infection following a bone marrow transplant.
‘Emily left us in the same way she came to us: in our arms, surrounded by love, with no trace of cancer in her body,’ Emma wrote. ‘In her short time with us, she taught us more about life, love, resilience, and strength than we could have ever imagined.’
To honour her memory and bring joy to children undergoing treatment, Emily’s family set up ‘Emily’s Tree’ at Whisk & Grind Cafe (6 Bunya Park Drive, Eatons Hill) as a drop-off point for new toy donations for patients at the Queensland Children’s Hospital.
Last year’s response was phenomenal, and this year, the hope is to surpass that generosity. The community’s kindness has already resulted in lots of donations, All donations will be delivered to the hospital on December 18th.
Emily’s legacy continues to inspire us
to spread joy and kindness. Her unwavering spirit reminds us to keep smiling through life’s challenges. To Emily, we send our gratitude for reminding us of the power of compassion.
TerryWhite Chemmart Arana Hills has unveiled two innovative services set to transform how locals access healthcare essentials, making it the first pharmacy in Australia to launch a 24/7 Express everyday wellness collection machine from MedyBox (Europe).
The new technology allows customers to purchase and collect a wide range of everyday, non-prescription items any time of day or night. This service caters to the everchanging schedules of the community, offering a reliable solution for late-night or last-minute needs.
‘Life doesn’t always go to plan, and having access to everyday products whenever our customers need them is vital,’ said pharmacy owner Karen Brown. ‘The 24/7 Express unit is all about making our pharmacy more accessible, no matter the time.’
In addition to this groundbreaking system, the pharmacy has also introduced the Omnicell Pharmaself24 Robot PLUS. This service offers customers a secure way to collect their prescriptions outside standard operating hours, providing a lifeline for those unable to visit during the day.
‘We’re open seven days a week until 8pm, but sometimes that doesn’t suit everyone,’ explained Ms. Brown.‘Our new 24/7 Express ensures we can support patients like shift workers or new mums needing their medication in the middle of the night. Through the myTWC app, we consult with customers and securely load their prescription into the machine for collection at their convenience.’
The app also allows customers to virtually shop the
pharmacy’s prescription and over-the-counter range at any time, further extending the reach of pharmacy care beyond its physical location.
These technological advancements underscore TerryWhite Chemmart Arana Hills’ commitment to accessible, flexible healthcare solutions tailored to modern lifestyles. By combining cutting-edge tools with personalized care, the pharmacy is setting a new standard for community healthcare in Brisbane’s north.

Starting Monday, 2 December, you’ll notice Council’s new fleet of lime green-lidded GO (Garden Organics) bins being collected across the region. This initiative, will help divert an extra 15,000 tonnes of waste from landfill every year.
Last month, in a test of culinary expertise and military grit, army chefs from across Australia and Papua New Guinea gathered at Brisbane’s Gallipoli Barracks for Exercise Golden Plate, a prestigious event hosted by the 10th Force Support Battalion.
The high-energy competition saw 30 chefs, organised into five teams, showcase their creativity and precision through a series of rigorous cooking challenges.
The event included mystery-box challenges, hot-box cooking showdowns, and a fine-dining competition, testing the chefs’ adaptability and skill under pressure. For the first time, chefs from the Papua New Guinea Defence Force joined their Australian counterparts, adding an international flair to the battleground of flavours.
Competitors also took on military skill challenges, such as shooting, navigating a water obstacle course, raft-building, and casualty survivability training, demonstrating the resilience required to serve as an army chef.
Among the competitors was Corporal Lee Kemp of the 1st Catering Platoon, a former British Army chef who now serves in the Australian Army Catering Corps. Competing for the first time, Corporal Kemp expressed pride in his team’s performance.
‘The tasks were pretty challenging, but I’m proud of my team’s result,’ he said. ‘We had no practice time, so I just had all the dishes memorised in my head. These challenges make us all want to strive for more and get better. It’s nice when we get to showcase our skills and receive recognition for our work.’
With 20 years of experience in the British Army, Corporal Kemp transferred to the Australian Army to continue his career in catering. ‘Military life is all I’ve known, so it was great that the Australian Army could offer me more opportunities to serve here,’ he said. ‘I’ve had a few opportunities to travel with this trade, and I look forward to more.’
Emerging victorious, chefs from the 1st Catering Platoon, 10th Force Support Battalion, claimed the overall competition win, proving their mettle and earning the recognition of their peers. The event highlighted the unique blend of military discipline and culinary artistry that defines the army chef profession.

An update from the Hills Organic Garden
The days are warming up and our garden is drying out quite rapidly. Most of our winter/spring crops have finished bearing and now need pulling out and throwing into the compost bays.
Growing in the hotter months becomes a little difficult as the plants need to be watered frequently and it gets too hot to work in the garden. However, we still have a few tomato plants which continue to produce fruit and hopefully we will have some potatoes and watermelons shortly.
We have a wonderful group of very keen members at the garden who work very hard keeping the garden neat and tidy and we receive a lot of compliments from the general public with regard to how ‘lovely’ the garden always looks.
The Hills Organic Garden is a great place for ‘green thumbs’ and lovers of organic vegetables to come and enjoy the company of like-minded people as well as being able to grow, harvest and eat healthy vegetables. Our garden is a community venture where volunteers work together to grow a chemicalfree harvest which they can all share. We are a friendly group of garden enthusiasts, so why not come along on a Sunday afternoon between 3pm and 5pm and have a chat. You will find us at 416 Bunya Road, Bunya next to the Off Leash Dog Park. Membership Fees per year are $20 for adults, $30 for family and $10 for Juniors. Visit hog.org.au, search The Hills Organic Garden on Facebook or phone 0415 856 532 for information.
An update from the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club Inc
QCGC President, Phil Adams, presents Club President, Ros Morton, with a Certificate of Congratulations.
The Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club Inc. celebrated a remarkable milestone in October— its 60th anniversary—with a luncheon held at the Arana Leagues Club.
This festive gathering brought together current members, Lifetime Members and local dignitaries, all of whom were excited to honour six decades of shared passion for plants and community engagement.
Speeches from Club President, Ros Morton, and founding members reflected on the club‘s early days and life over the years, emphasising the sense of camaraderie and community that has been a hallmark of the club’s meetings.
QCGC President, Phil Adams, and Committee Member, Jillian Mahoney, were special guests at the event. In his address, Phil highlighted the club’s commitment to fostering a love for gardening and providing a space for people to learn and connect. He concluded by kindly presenting the club a certificate on behalf of the QCGC, in recognition of this outstanding achievement.
In a highlight of the celebration, founding members, Margaret Morrow and Berenice Corvi, together with longeststanding President, Pat Killoran, performed a cake-cutting ceremony in honour of the club‘s enduring legacy. All those present toasted to many more years of happy gardening and connecting with like-minded people.
If you have been considering visiting a local garden club, we warmly welcome you join us on the first Thursday in February 2025, at The Enoggera Memorial Hall (entrance via Trundle St) at 9.30 am for a 10:00 am start. You will be greeted with friendly smiles and a complimentary morning tea. There will be time to browse the Trade Table for new plants or homemade preserves before the meeting proper - a brief affair - followed by a talk from our Guest Speaker and a raffle draw. Entry is $5. All our best wishes for a happy and safe Festive Season!
Residents are being urged to ‘pause before they plant’ as tree roots continue to wreak havoc on Unitywater’s wastewater system. Recent data reveals that over 30% of pipe blockages and wastewater overflows are caused by tree root intrusions.
Unitywater, the water utility servicing South East Queensland, reported that in the last six months, their crews have handled more than 1,300 blockages or wastewater overflow incidents—439 of these were directly linked to invasive tree roots.
Rhett Duncan, Unitywater’s Executive Manager for Customer Delivery, said the numbers make the problem clear: ‘One in every three blockages in our network is caused by tree roots, and these incidents are not only unpleasant for our crews but disruptive to our community as well.’
According to Mr. Duncan, tree roots naturally seek water and can penetrate pipes, creating a network of roots that gradually grow larger and harder to clear. ‘These blockages can lead to wastewater overflows, damaging our environment or even causing sewage to back up into people’s homes, creating a costly, smelly mess.’
An example of a tree root intrusion into a water drain
For homeowners, the impact can be stressful and expensive, as rootrelated damage may require replacing private pipes.
To help residents prevent such issues, Unitywater encourages them to think carefully about tree placement and choose plants with less invasive root systems.
Unitywater offers a free online mapping tool, allowing residents to check for water and wastewater pipes on their properties by simply entering their address.
Planting guidelines classify plants into categories based on how close they can safely be planted to pipes:
• Directly above or up to 1.5m away from water supply and wastewater pipes
Blue Flax Lily, Tall Sedge, Spiny-Headed Mat-Rush, Common Tussock Grass
• Between 1.5m and 3m away from water supply and wastewater pipes
Austral Indigo, Dogwood, Dwarf Banksia, Hairy Bush Pea, Sweet Wattle, Woombye Bush, Broad–Leaved Palm Lily
• More than 3m away from water supply and wastewater pipes
Blueberry Ash, Plum Myrtle, Peanut Tree
• Not Recommended for Planting Near Pipes
Gum tree (large species), Pine tree, Poinciana, Jacaranda, Broad–Leafed Paperbark, Weeping Paperbark, Mango tree
More varieties are listed on Unity Water's website www. unitywater.com/smart-planting
