In a heartwarming initiative to foster literacy among children, the Story Dogs Program has found a new home at the Arana Hills Library.

Introduced by the non-profit literacy charity ‘Story Dogs Australia’ to the local Lions Club, this program has been gaining traction, thanks to the dedication of volunteer Georgie Crew and her adorable little pug, Winston.

The program invites children to read to Winston in a nonthreatening environment, alleviating the pressure of children having to read aloud. This simple yet effective approach has proven to be immensely rewarding, improving the literacy skills of young readers around the Hills District.

Georgie Crew, a 76-year-old enthusiastic volunteer at the Golden Valley Keperra Lions Club, along with her 5-year-old pug Winston, has been a pivotal part of this initiative. Georgie, who also volunteers at the club’s café every Tuesday morning, sought to extend her community service by enrolling Winston in the Story Dogs Program. Membership Chair Paul Ryan of the Lions Club shares that Winston is accredited annually for

his role in the program and has become a beloved fixture at Grovely State School, showing up for weekly reading sessions with Grade 1 students and upwards.

As well, every Monday afternoon, from 3:30pm onwards, Georgie and Winston settle on a cozy blanket in Arana Hills Library, ready to welcome a stream of children. Each child gets undivided attention as they read to Winston on the blanket during their booked-in time slot. This one-on-one interaction not only enhances their reading skills but also provides a comforting and enjoyable experience.

Our journalist, Georgia Wright, was thrilled to be invited along to one of these sessions and witness the positive impact firsthand (and cuddle with Winston!).

On the afternoon, Georgie shared with Georgia some amusing anecdotes about Winston, reflecting on the charm

The Lions volunteer firmly believes that the “Pig the Pug” children’s books by Aaron Blabey are uncannily truthful in telling a story of a food-fixated pug. Winston‘s obsession with treats is no different. However, though a bit overweight, Winston’s indulgence is managed carefully during sessions. For safety, children place treats on the ground and signal him to eat by booping his nose! Winston‘s calm demeanour, shaped by his many interactions with Georgie‘s great nieces and nephews, makes him an ideal reading companion—if you ignore his relentless snorting and panting! It seems that his quiet moments are reserved only for enjoying treats or a good old ear scratch.

Echo News highly encourages the local community to participate in this enriching program. Sessions at the Arana Hills Library begin at 3:30 PM every Monday afternoon. This initiative not only supports children‘s literacy but also brings smiles to all who meet Winston and Georgie. For more information and to book a session, visit the Arana Hills Library or contact the Lions Club. Come along and experience the joy of reading with Winston, the Story Dog!

Brave Young Local to Cut Hair for Cancer

Local 11-year-old Tilly is set to make a significant sacrifice by chopping off her long, beautiful locks to raise much-needed funds for the Cancer Council. This remarkable gesture will take place on October 5th and is aimed at supporting cancer research and helping those affected by the disease.

After four years of patiently growing her perfect ponytail, Tilly, a vibrant sports and arts enthusiast, is ready to take this brave leap. ‘I really enjoy playing netball, art, sport, and spending time with my family and friends,’ says Tilly. Despite her love for her long hair, her desire to help others has inspired her to make this bold decision.

Tilly was motivated by the plight of children battling cancer and her desire to contribute to finding a cure. “There are a lot of kids that have cancer, and I wanted to raise money to help find a cure so not as many kids get sick,” she explains. Her inspiration came from a friend‘s similar act of charity last year, which sparked the idea to donate her own ponytail.

The young philanthropist admits she has mixed emotions about the event. ‘I’m nervous because I have been growing my hair for a long time and I‘m worried about what it will look like. But I’m excited to help and try to raise money for people with cancer,’ Tilly shares.

The chopped ponytail will be donated to make wigs for those who have lost their hair due to cancer treatments. Tilly feels proud to be making a difference and plans to grow her hair out again to donate in the future.

‘Thank you for your donations and supporting me so far. If you would like to

donate, just scan the QR code or click the link below,’ Tilly says with gratitude.

Compassion in Action through the Buddy Bench

In an inspiring move towards fostering inclusivity among students, Prince of Peace Lutheran College has recently installed a Buddy Bench on its Junior Campus, thanks to the initiative of a compassionate Year 6 student, Clara.

Clara, observing that some of the younger students were sometimes left without playmates during break times, decided to take action. This inspiring young student started researching solutions and discovered the concept of the Buddy Bench—a simple yet effective tool to promote inclusivity and friendship among students. She learned that Buddy Benches have been successfully implemented in schools around the world, providing a designated spot where children can sit if they are feeling lonely, signaling to others that they would like someone to play with.

Taking her idea further, Clara wrote a detailed proposal and presented it to the President of the Arana Leagues Club. Her passion and dedication impressed the club, which generously donated the funds necessary to purchase and install the Buddy Bench at the school. ‘We thank the Arana Leagues Club for their generosity,’ said a school representative.

To ensure the bench’s successful integration, students were surveyed about the best location for it, and Year 6 students shared information about its purpose and use during a school assembly. Clara and her peers are committed to continuing their efforts by educating students about inclusivity and encouraging the use of the Buddy Bench.

Statistics support the effectiveness of such initiatives. Schools that have implemented Buddy Benches have reported a noticeable increase in positive social interactions

among students. According to a study by the University of Portsmouth, schools with Buddy Benches saw a 20% reduction in playground loneliness and a 15% increase in inclusive play activities.

The addition of the Buddy Bench at Prince of Peace Lutheran College is a testament to the impact that one student’s empathy and initiative can have on an entire school community. Clara’s efforts have created a more inclusive environment, ensuring that no student feels left out during playtimes.

For parents and schools interested in installing a Buddy Bench, Clara’s initiative serves as a powerful example. Conversations with teachers and school administrators can be the first step towards bringing this beneficial feature to more schools, fostering a culture of kindness and inclusivity.

Samford Rangers FC Latest Victim Of Copper Thieves

Samford Rangers FC became the latest casualty of a copper theft spree impacting local sports clubs. Thieves have stolen copper from the electrical pits connected to the field lighting, rendering the lights on Field 3 inoperable. This incident follows a disturbing trend of similar thefts at other clubs, including Mitchelton FC, who were hit across four nights, and multiple incidents at North Star FC, Caboolture FC, Northside Christian Football Club and Nudgee Recreational Reserve. Furthermore, The Moreton Bay Lions AFL Club has been targeted three times, with one theft resulting in the loss of 14.7 kilometers of cable.

Copper theft is a growing issue for Brisbane sporting clubs, causing widespread disruption. Queensland police data indicates a sharp rise in copper thefts over the past two years, with energy providers reporting that infrastructure targeting has tripled during this period. The thefts are not just a financial burden but also disrupt club operations and community activities.

Samford Rangers FC is now facing short-term disruptions as they work on a sustainable solution. The club is concerned about the possibility of repeat thefts, which often occur shortly after repairs are made and also exploring preventative measures, although these will come at a cost. ‘We would rather spend this money on value-adding services for our members, but we don't really have a choice,’ said Samford Rangers President Mathew Kilkelly.

The theft at Samford Rangers FC likely occurred on Monday, July 22nd, sometime after 10pm. The club is appealing to anyone who saw suspicious behavior near Field 3, particularly close to the cow paddocks, to contact them as the police are involved. Additionally, Samford Rangers FC asks the community to remain vigilant, especially when driving past the parklands at night, as thieves often return to ‘finish the job.’ Current legislation under the Second-Hand Dealers and Pawnbrokers Act 2003 allows thieves to take stolen copper to a pawn broker without proof of ID, receive a cash payment, and walk away. Queensland is the only State that has not introduced law to prevent this from happening. Perhaps simple

legislative changes could effectively end the resale market for stolen copper immediately, a measure far more effective than CCTV, deterrent devices, or further stretching the resources of police, Energex, and Council.

Sports clubs across Brisbane are now being forced to seek alternatives to copper wiring, driven by the need to protect their facilities from these thefts. The community's support and vigilance are crucial in addressing this ongoing issue and ensuring the functionality of local sports infrastructure. Magical Mahaca Park Chronicles

A volunteers update of all things ‘Mahaca Park’ by Rosemary Leiss

HELP IS NEEDED!

Following on from last month’s article, it has been a bustling period at Mahaca Park. The park is looking terrific, thanks to the hard work and dedication of our volunteers.

A few weeks ago, I had a heartwarming experience when a young woman walking her one-yearold stopped me while I was working and offered a donation towards the

park. Such a lovely gesture truly makes our work more rewarding.

Kindest regards Rosemary Leiss

Mahaca Park is looking lush at the moment!

A bit about Mahaca Park:

Running a length of 700m, Mahaca Park is nestled on the corner of Keong Road and Albany Creek Road. It has been a long standing stretch of green for as long as the community can remember. It wasn’t until 7 years ago, in January of 2015, that Rosemary’s gardening club collaborated with the local council to develop a memorial garden for beloved estate agent Peter Campbell. Now thanks to Rosemary and her volunteers, the park is now a vibrant utopia of native Australian plants, exotic beauties, bearded dragons, curlews… and some pesky bush turkeys.

Thriving Garden Brings Joy and Fresh Produce

An update from the Hills Organic Garden

The garden is looking absolutely amazing at the moment. The weather has been lovely and cool (but not too cold) and with the little bit of rain in early July the plants are thriving. The vegetables are flourishing. The snowpeas are producing well and the rocket, womboks and lettuce are great to put in salads. The silverbeet, shallots and cabbages are being shared amongst our members and beetroot will be picked soon. Furthermore, memebers are pulling up some delicious carrots and although small are lovely and crunchy. The young lemon tree has produced a few lemons for the first time and members look forward to what next year will bring.

Over in the herb garden, the basil is flowering attracting bees, plus society garlic, thyme, mother of herbs and parsley are flourishing. All these herbs are great to put in soups and casseroles during the winter months.

HOG members are all enjoying the beautiful weather at this time of the year and continue to have a good roll-up on a Sunday afternoon. Not only do they enjoy the gardening aspect of the Community Garden but the social interaction is an added bonus. In addition, at the end of the working day, HOG members always seem to go home with a basket full of goodies. The HOG community is a friendly group who offer people in the Hills District the opportunity to grow vegetables using organic principles. Age is no barrier so feel free to pop along one Sunday afternoon to have a chat and a look around the beautiful garden.

As we head into winter and the days get shorter, members will now meet on a Sunday afternoon from 2pm - 4pm. You will find the Garden at 416 Bunya Road, Bunya next to the Off Leash Dog Park. Membership Fees per year are $20 for adults, $30 for family and $10 for Juniors. Visit www.hog.org.au, search The Hills Organic Garden on Facebook or phone 0415 856 532 for information. We look forward to meeting you.

The next meeting of the Ferny Grove Garden Club will be on Friday, 30th August, at 1pm. The club meets in St Matthew’s Church Hall, Church Road, Mitchelton.

An officer from the National Fire Ant Eradication Program will deliver the monthly talk. This program is a crucial initiative aimed at finding, containing, and destroying fire ants in South East Queensland, Australia. It will be very helpful for gardeners to be aware of the fire ant problem.

Learn About Bonsai

An update from the Mitchelton & Districts Garden Club

At our July meeting, members were treated to an insightful talk on bonsai by renowned expert David Calder, with assistance from his wife, Jane. David, who has decades of experience in bonsai cultivation, began his talk by exploring the history and philosophy behind bonsai. He explained how this Japanese art form, which dates back over a thousand years, is not just about miniaturizing trees but also about capturing the essence of nature and creating a living piece of art.

This presentation was filled with beautiful images of bonsai trees in various stages of growth, demonstrating the meticulous care and patience required to maintain them. It also delved into the practical aspects of bonsai cultivation. David covered the basics, such as selecting the right species of tree, the importance of soil composition, and the nuances of watering and fertilizing.

Attendees learned about the different styles of bonsai and the different techniques and levels of care they require. David’s explanations were clear and engaging, making the complex art of bonsai accessible to both novices and experienced gardeners.

The meeting concluded with a Q&A session, where members asked a variety of questions, from pest control to seasonal care tips. David’s expertise and enthusiasm left a lasting impression on the attendees, many of whom expressed a renewed interest in starting or expanding their own bonsai collections.

Our next meeting at The Enoggera Memorial Hall (entrance via Trundle St) will be on Thursday 1 August at 9:30am for a 10:00am start. Entry is $5.00 and morning tea is provided. Visitors are most welcome. Feel free to contact us via email at mitcheltongc@gmail.com or find us on Facebook @ mitcheltongardenclub.

Friendship Through Gardening

An update from the Stafford Garden Club

In August, it is still not too late to remove the carrot-like bindii weeds from the lawn before they seed and produce painful burrs in Summer. The fewer seeds they set the fewer bindii you will have next winter. Summer flowering shrubs such as allamanda, abelia plumbago, crepe myrtle, acalypha and duranta, can be cut back now, unless you are in a frost prone area. Leave pruning of Spring flowering shrubs until after Spring. Prune swollen gall wasp stems from your citrus. Throw the cuttings in the bin so the wasps don’t hatch out. Fertilize citrus, passion fruit, native plants and emerging bulbs. Then water well.

Our speaker for August is Darryl Ruprecht author of “King of the Ferns: The Australian Staghorn Fern Experience”. He will describe the techniques and processes to propagate and cultivate this magnificent plant.

We meet at the OES Hall cnr Kitchener Rd and Bohland St, Kedron. The next meeting will be on the 15th August at 9.30am for Morning Tea, to buy from the plant stall and to admire the exhibits on the bench. Visitors and new members are very welcome. Run With Rob’s Annual Gala Will Make Dancers of Runners

On Saturday, 31 August 2024, charitable running group, Run With Rob (RWR) will come together for their Annual Gala. Hosted by the Kedron Wavell RSL, the gala promises an evening of fun, frocking up and frivolity.

On a night when athletes swap their sweats for suits, and their runners for dancing shoes, the gala also serves as RWR’s biggest fundraiser – with 100 per cent of proceeds going towards Small Steps 4 Hannah (SS4H) in their ongoing efforts to HALT (representing the late Hannah Clarke and her three children, Aaliyah, Laianah and Trey) the cycle of domestic violence so that everyone can feel respected, informed, confident to act and safe.

To date, RWR has raised a remarkable $160,000 for charity, including nearly $100,000 for SS4H, with the gala alone contributing $34,000 to the SS4H total in the past two years.

When asked about the gala, RWR founder Rob Hopkinson said guests should prepare to indulge in a delightful sit-down dinner, dessert and live music to dance the night away.

‘Guests should prepare for an evening filled with excitement as we have a fantastic night planned, which will be headlined by inspirational guest speakers, Sue and Lloyd Clarke (cofounders of SS4H) as well Travis Ireland, creator of the Run

The World app.

‘Prizes galore will also be on offer, along with various raffles as well as an auction, said Rob.

Rob highlighted none of this would be possible without the support of RWR’s sponsors, as well as the business community, for their generous donation of various goodies and services to aid fundraising efforts.

‘We value each and every one of our sponsors and we are grateful for their unwavering support of our running club and its aspirations to give back to the community.’

Similarly, Rob expressed his gratitude for those RWR members that had volunteered their time in organising the gala. “Our runners are capable of amazing things, whether it is running a 5K ParkRun or competing in a marathon. But it is amazing seeing them come together and bring their talents so that this gala can happen. It is a complete team effort.’

Tickets to the RWR Annual Gala are still available (at $120 each) with corporate table options available. If unable to attend, Rob welcomes donations from businesses and prospective sponsors looking to get behind RWR.

‘RWR is a running community that inspires its members to be the best versions of themselves,’ said Rob. ‘We accommodate runners of all abilities and backgrounds to get out there and give it their best – an inclusive running group that proudly recognises every stride makes a difference.’

Rob is truly grateful for the community he has built and aspires to continue growing the RWR community to be Brisbane’s biggest running group. ‘This gala reflects and celebrates the club’s drive to continue raising money for local charities as well as promote an inclusive and supportive environment for existing and potential runners.’

For more information on ticket availability, or if you would like to be involved or donate to the RWR Annual Gala, please email runwithrob4037@gmail.com

Beloved Blackwood Street Halloween Festival Cancelled for 2024

In a disappointing turn of events for local residents, the beloved Blackwood Street, Mitchelton Halloween Festival has been cancelled for 2024. The decision comes after the expiration of a three-year funding contract between Brisbane City Council and the Mitchelton Rotary Club in 2023.

The 2023 festival, held on Sunday, October 29th, saw over 5,000 attendees and was celebrated as one of the best events in the festival’s history. However, a number of key members from the Mitchelton Rotary Club’s Halloween sub-committee have either moved

away from Brisbane or are on extended holidays, leaving the club unable to organise the event this year.

While this news is a blow to the community, there is hope that another organisation may step in to host the festival in the future. The Mitchelton Rotary Club remains committed to community involvement and continues to seek support for its various activities.

‘We deeply regret not being able to hold the festival this year,’ said a representative from the Mitchelton Rotary Club. ‘We are actively looking for new volunteers and members to help us continue our community work.’

For those interested in supporting the Mitchelton Rotary Club or inquiring about membership, please visit their website at mitcheltonrotaryclub.org.au or contact them via email at mitcheltonrotary@ gmail.com. Alternatively, the incoming President for 2024-25, Ian Cameron, can be reached at 0434 079 035.

The community's enthusiasm for the Halloween festival is undeniable, and it is hoped that with continued support and new volunteers, the event can make a triumphant return in the coming years

Local PT Group’s Generosity Overflowing

In an inspiring show of community spirit, a local personal training group has made a significant impact by spearheading a food donation drive for the Picabeen Community Centre. This effort was led by Miranda, the owner and operator of Enhance PT, who was moved to action after reading an article in The Hills Echo about Picabeen’s urgent need for food donations.

Miranda quickly organized a two-week initiative dubbed the ‘Community & Generosity of Spirit Challenge,’ calling

Miranda with a jam-packed car boot full of food donations for Picabeen thanks to her wonderful clients

on her clients to contribute to the cause. The response was overwhelming.

‘To say the response has been grand is an understatement,’ Miranda remarked. ‘When I loaded the donations in the back of my Pajero for delivery to Picabeen, my boot will quite literally be overflowing with grocery items. We collected a total of 243 items weighing a whopping 112.5 kg for donation. I’m just so proud and quite humbled by the response of my clients.’ The success of this drive underscores the power of small, dedicated groups in making a substantial difference within their communities. Enhance PT’s efforts will help replenish Picabeen Community Centre‘s food hampers, providing much-needed relief to local families in need.

This initiative stands as a testament to the community’s generosity and the impact that even a small group of individuals can have when they unite for a common cause. If you would like to Picabeen Community Centre‘s Food Appeal, contact info@ picabeen.org.au

Get ready for Moreton Bay City’s new garden organics (GO) service, launching in December. Did you know that 23% of items currently placed in general waste bins are garden organics? Eligible households will soon receive a 240-litre lime green-lidded GO bin for easy at-home recycling. So if your home has a land area between 300 to 2,000 square metres you will receive a new 240-litre GO bin. Residential properties with a land size smaller than 300 or larger than 2,000 square metres will be able to opt in to the service from 1 March 2025.

By using this bin for garden waste like grass clippings, branches, and leaves, you can help divert 15,000 tonnes of waste from landfill each year. This initiative reduces greenhouse gas emissions, supporting our goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2039.

New bins will be delivered to eligible properties between September and November 2024. Find out more at www. moretonbay.qld.gov.au/GO

Community Rallies Behind Local Lad’s Fundraising Efforts for Brain Cancer

The Little Gossip Café, a beloved cornerstone of our community, has recently taken on a heartfelt mission to support one of their own in a time of profound loss and to raise awareness for brain cancer.

Fedie El Tahan, a dedicated worker at Little Gossip Café, tragically lost his brother Joseph to brain cancer. In honour of Joseph’s memory and to bring attention to the critical need for brain cancer research, Fedie is spearheading a fundraising initiative for the Mark Hughes Foundation with the help of his cherished workplace. So far, the fundraising pot has surpassed the initial goal of $10,000 by an additional $750 as of July 12!

‘I can't express enough gratitude to the community around Little Gossip Café,’ Fedie expresses. Little Gossip Café’s support has been multifaceted, encompassing both fundraising efforts and emotional backing throughout Joseph’s battle with cancer.

What’s more, in September, Fedie plans to embark on the 22km Two Peaks trail at the heart of Queensland’s Scenic Rim. For Fedie, this is not just a physical challenge but a deeply personal journey. ‘My brother and I went hiking a week before his diagnosis, so climbing these peaks reminds me of that experience together,’ he shares with Echo News. This connection to their shared love of hiking adds a layer of emotion—and an opportunity for healing—to the endeavour, transforming it into a tribute to Joseph’s memory.

While Fedie has tackled a few moderate hikes in Queensland before, this particular challenge represents a new frontier. It's no longer just about the climb, but about what it symbolises: resilience, remembrance, and Fedie’s relentless pursuit of brain cancer awareness.

Fedie’s goals extend far beyond the monetary target. ‘Definitely awareness and change,’ he shares, highlighting a critical gap in brain cancer research and funding. His initiative seeks to place this often-overlooked cause in the spotlight and drive both awareness and tangible progress in the fight against brain cancer.

Joseph El Tahan’s battle with brain cancer began with his diagnosis of Glioblastoma at the young age of 21. He passed away a year later, in August 2022. ‘The week before he was diagnosed, we went on his first hike up Mt. Maroon. He seemed perfectly fine,’ Fedie recalls, reflecting on the shock and rapid progression of the disease.

Despite undergoing two brain surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiation, and facing a grim prognosis, Joseph remained an inspiring figure. ‘He was a beautiful soul and easily the strongest person I've ever met,’ Fedie remembers. Joseph’s unwavering faith and strength left an indelible mark on all who witnessed his journey.

The applaudable funding and awareness raised through our community’s efforts to support brain cancer shines a beacon of hope for all affected by the cause. Through our support of one another, we have contributed to a brighter future for brain cancer research and anyone battling the illness.

For those whose heartstrings have been tugged by Fedie’s honourable plight, you still have time to donate using this link: https://mark-hughes-foundation.grassrootz.com/ mhf-twopeaksscenicrim-2024/fedie-el-tahan or scan the QR Code

A TIP TO HELP OUR BEES!. ..During the summer months there are fewer flowers, food sources and water for the bees. Furthermore, bees may drown as they try to drink from the pools when they do find water. To give our bees a helping hand, why not grate an Apple and add some water to the bowl? The bees will be able to get the sugars from the fruit and drink the water but not drown as they can stand on pieces of fruit. Our bee populations are threatened, let’s give them all the support we can!

Croquet Craze: Discover the Charm of Pine Rivers Croquet Club

The game of Croquet became highly popular as a social pastime with the English aristocracy during the 1860s.

A large part of its popularity was due to its combination of strategy; skill; and perhaps a little luck, and that it could be played by all ages and genders. Croquet can be played at state; national and international levels.

Croquet is played on grass courts about the size of two adjacent tennis courts. A player uses a mallet to hit a 500g ball through metal hoops, although the size of the ball, the type of mallet, and even the size of the court can vary with different types of games.

You probably haven’t noticed any local croquet courts with uniformed or casually dressed players enjoying friendly rivalry and companionship whilst driving around your neighbourhood - this is because the Pine Rivers Croquet Club is not located in a high profile location but is at Joe Davis Park, 17 Deakin Street, Brendale. Pine Rivers Club has three croquet courts and one Gateball court, plus a clubhouse. Gateball, a form of croquet that originated in Japan and uses a smaller court, is very popular in Asian countries and is developing an enthusiastic following in Australia.

Different croquet clubs offer different versions of croquet, Pine Rivers offering Golf Croquet, Ricochet Croquet and Gateball. At Pine Rivers games can be played on Tuesday mornings, Wednesday afternoons, Thursday mornings, Friday afternoons

and Saturday mornings.

If you would like to play a low impact sport on beautifully maintained lawns and enjoy the company of friendly likeminded people of all ages and gender, then croquet could be for you. You can be a social player or take the game more seriously and compete at state, national and international events. The club can’t offer the lavish formal high teas after the game, as was customary with the aristocracy in England, but they do have a nice, sheltered area adjacent to the club house, where you can have a cuppa and discuss the intricacies of the previous game or just enjoy some light social chit chat.

Pine Rivers Croquet club are a friendly group and welcome visitors. They can teach you the game and have you on the court, mallet in hand, enjoying the game and the companionship not long after you arrive. The first two games are free. Please phone the secretary Lynda on 0416 383 386 for details.

The club run ‘Come Try’ Days sponsored by the Moreton Bay Regional Council. To register for these, on 5 October and 23 November at 9am, please contact the Council.

Under a Coalition Government I lead; we’ll get our country ‘Back on Track.’

Vietnam Veterans’ Day

On 18 August 2024, we observe Vietnam Veterans’ Day, remembering almost 60,000 Australians who served in the conflict between 1962 and 1972. Our community includes many local veterans, and we should be incredibly proud of their service to our country.

We pay tribute to the 523 Australians who died in the line of duty and the more than 3,000 who were wounded. We also honour the veterans still with us: those who continue to live with the challenges and traumas of their service, and those who, to this day, play a crucial role in supporting Australia’s ex-service community.

Everton News

from your State Member for Everton TIM MANDER

Making Our Community Safer Plan

The LNP has announced, if elected, their ‘Adult Crime, Adult Time’ policy will restore consequences for actions with youth offenders to receive the same sentences as adults committing the same crimes. This is not only about keeping dangerous criminals off our streets, but also about sending a strong message to deter youth from committing crime.

The LNP has committed $175 million to our new ‘Staying on Track’ Program to deliver an intensive 12-month rehabilitation program to support kids reintegrating into communities. This will stop the detention system becoming a merry-go-round for the growing cohort of serious repeat youth offenders in Queensland. This plan will include 12 months of supervision and support, including education, skills training and community connection for every youth offender leaving detention.

The LNP will put victims of crime first by rewriting sentencing principles and they will receive automatic updates relating to their cases. If the LNP forms government, they will increase the number of police on the beat, through retention and better resourcing.

School Leaders Visit Parliament

Over the past few months, I had the pleasure of showing student leaders from our local schools around Parliament on a personal tour. This is a fantastic tradition we have amongst our school communities, and as always, it’s a great day out. It's always a pleasure to chat with the students about their ambitions and concerns and it's refreshing to hear the younger generation's perspective on today's issues.
