A Little Christmas Angel in our Community
Meeting our community’s increasing needs, Share the Dignity powers full steam ahead toward fulfilling their goal of spreading love this Christmas. #ItsInTheBag, the initiative’s annual Christmas time appeal, encourages locals to donate a bag of goodies at the closest Bunnings store between Friday 19 November and Sunday 28 November 2021. The aim—to ensure woman and young girls spending this special holiday in domestic violence shelters receive life’s bare necessities. This may include toiletry needs, deodorant, toothbrushes and toothpaste, bathing items, as well as little luxuries like handwritten notes and knick-knacks. For many women and girls in tough situations, this is the only gift they will receive this Christmas. Madelyn (8-years-old from Ferny Hills) and her mother Amy-Louise are ‘Shero's’ for Share The Dignity. They have collected and sorted well over 200 bags and 100’s of individual sanitary packets in the last three years, and have been building their stash at home to donate and can quite easily bury Madelyn completely at this stage! After Madelyn’s father’s job became redundant whilst her mother was on maternity leave, Madelyn’s family struggled, both mentally and financially. Until their mindset was forever changed by the kindness of a stranger. As described by Madelyn’s mother, ‘We started collecting after we were able to get a food parcel from Nexus on Flockton Street. A volunteer chased me to my car and handed me an old handbag. I was shocked, but would never want to appear rude and accepted it, thinking it was empty and a gift because I must have looked that miserable with a newborn and little girl lined up at a food bank. I didn't look at it until I got home, and to my surprise it was filled with the most beautiful things, for me. Little things you just go without when you're struggling. I

Madelyn at the Share the Dignity donation box at Brookside Shopping Centre always made sure the kids had what they needed and then my husband but never myself. It was just so incredible another lady had done that for a total stranger. It was like she had totally understood what I had needed in that moment.’ It is always important to give back when we can. As Madelyn’s mum says, when you have more than you need, build a longer table—not a higher fence. That was the mindset Madelyn’s family adopted that day, and that is the mindset she is growing up to practice herself. Madelyn loves being a part of it all. She writes in the cards we put in each bag and chooses special items to gift. She is also a very handy size to climb in the big boxes at Bunnings to pass bags out! Furthermore, Madelyn, has gone onto raise over $20,000 for different charities in the last couple of years with no plans on stopping!

So much more than just a Ladies Club
VIEW stands for Voice, Interests and Education of Women. Members of VIEW Clubs of Australia support the education of disadvantaged Australian children by raising much needed funds for The Smith Family. Through fundraising activities and social events in local communities, members raise money that goes directly to The Smith Family's learning and mentoring programs for disadvantaged students. With more than 300 clubs around Australia involving some 15,000 women from all walks of life, the collective voice of VIEW is an important aspect of the organsation's work. VIEW members connect with local Members of Parliament, build relationships with local media outlets, and find ways for women to have their voices heard on issues of importance for the future wellbeing of Australians. In particular women and the community. The extensive reach of VIEW also helps to build the profile of The Smith Family in areas where the organisation may not have a presence. This is vital in increasing support for the work of The Smith Family and helping to raise funds. Through VIEW's unique Resolution process, members collectively identify and articulate issues that are considered important for influencing social change in Australia. Publicity activities - including holding local information stalls and connecting with local media - provide opportunities to speak up about these issues of importance. In 2018-19, VIEW members raised more than $1.1 million for The Smith Family's programs. Aspley VIEW Club was formed in 1994 and with a current membership of 191, it is the largest VIEW Club in Australia.

Month Magnus Nights By Bryn Smith
Army Combat Engineer Reservist and Author Bryn Smith got some of his story inspiration while serving at Enogerra Army Barracks.
The 5-starred Magnus Nights: The Helios Incident is a futuristic crime novel that publisher Hawkeye says is the ideal Christmas gift because of its wide audience appeal, particularly for the hard-to-buy-for-man on your list. Magnus Nights Synopsis: Outgunned, outnumbered, and the clock’s ticking. Police are being gunned down in the streets, incinerated by advanced weapons that no criminal should have. Detective Constable Craddock and Detective Sergeant Augustine of Taskforce Bloodhound must find the source of the weapons at any cost. But there are powerful forces who benefit from the chaos. A soldier without an enemy. An executive with everything to lose. A gangster who smells opportunity. A shadowy figure after more than money. And it may be too late to stop them. Carolyn Martinez Director Hawkeye says she signed Smith because of the superior writing and fast-paced narrative. “Magnus Nights contains some of the best action scenes I’ve ever read. Smith managed to deepen characterisation within one particular high impact action scene – that’s not easy.” The Author: Thirty-year-old Bryn Smith says writing helped him through depression and losing his older brother to suicide. ‘When you have depression, you can’t regulate your emotions. You get these extreme highs and lows. You have to find something worth living for. Something that pulls you out of that deep, dark pit.’ Smith poured himself into writing. ‘I’d already been submitting short stories during university. I even had a half-finished novel,’ Smith says. ‘Dav, my older brother, was the one who got me into reading. We both loved sci fi books.’ By 2020, Smith had turned things around. Smith is still focused on mental health, and he wants to bring that forward in his writing. Magnus Nights is available at hawkeyebooks.com.au and all good libraries and bookstores. If you have a book you would like to share, please get in touch. Email admin@echo-news.com.au www.echo-news.com.au
Sustainable Transport Event a Great Success An electric monocycle did laps of the Bracken Ridge Tavern carpark as hundreds of interested people browsed the marquees and talked with the experts.
The Sustainable Transport for the Future event hosted by the Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF) took place on Sunday 31st October. The future is now and transport is an issue. The 2032 Olympics are only 10 years away and there will be a lot of extra people moving into and around Brisbane. How will they get around? Is it just about increasing infrastructure or are there alternatives. The ACF BRT Event was an opportunity to explore some of these. Electric Scooters were on show Participants ranged from at the event private car owners to cycling and walking groups. Of course, there were Teslas. But there were also Tesla Ubers. There were electric minis, Honda’s, Volvo’s, Hyundai’s, Mitsubishi’s, Nissans and Kias (thanks for organizing these cars Australian Electric Vehicle Association). The range of electric cars available in Australia is growing rapidly and there is always the option of converting your beloved vehicle to electric with TractionEV. Over a dozen different electric scooters were on display. Scootmasters used the BRT as a staging point to begin one

A variety of electric vehicles were also present of their very popular rides. Next to them were the e bikes… Charging providers displayed their wares alongside electric motorcycles and scooters. We even had an electric campervan courtesy of EV Automotive. If you out and you run out of charge you can call on EV Charging Australia. If your home needs a charger installed then Sam and Arran from RE GenEV can help. An entire ecosystem of sustainable transport options is becoming available to help Brisbanites not just cope with getting around but to enjoy our beautiful city as we prepare for the near future and the Commonwealth games. Team Keperra - ready to take on the challenge!
On the 13th December, a real test of endurance will be taking place at the Keperra Country Golf Club, and it’s all for a terrific cause - to raise funds for the Cancer Council.
John Price, David Ransome, Greg Marshall, Nick Mair, Codey Gray, Allison Maguire, Bill MacKinley, Stefan Panzer Jackie Dowling, Alana Griffiths, Jeanette Giudice, Sean O’Connell, Douglas Norris, Anthony Burton and Chrissy Booth. Collectively, the team have already made a huge dent in their $80K goal with $37,000 raised making the team rank 2nd in Australia as far as fund raised goes too! Great work! Although this will be a LONG day, the good news is the Keperra Country Golf Club is a world class Course and in tip top shape. Currently the Club is ranked 2nd in Australia and number one in Queensland in regards to the Longest Day. To make every hole count, pop over and sponsor the team head to www.longestday.org.au/fundraisers/TeamKeperra. Any amount large or small is welcomed. So together, let‘s tee off for a cancer-free future.
Dubbed the Cancer Council’s Longest Day, this ultimate golf challenge will see members complete four rounds of golf in one day. That‘s 72 holes in total! Needless to say, this is a serious test of skill, strength, and stamina, however as a team member and marketing manager of Keperra Country Golf Club Michael Dash states, it is a for a great cause. ‘It’s going to be a serious test of endurance which I’m slightly nervous about, however all for a good cause. Because Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, with two in three Australians diagnosed with skin cancer by the age of 70 and we want to help change this,’ said Michael. The Keperra team consists of Michael Dash, Mark Pisarek,

A Christmas message from our local Councillor
Thank you to Katie for her hard work and dedication bringing the Eatons Echo to fruition this year, many residents have raised with me how wonderful it is to have a local newspaper again that assists in improving our community connections. Some highlights of this year; Council purchased two important environmental land pieces, one at Clear Mountain and the latest at Caboolture. Council will now work on rehabilitating and revegetating these parcels to ensure we protect the homes of native animals and koala habitats. Locally, we have improved pathway connectivity, resealed many roads and carried out several major park upgrades with Delaware Park complete, Nolan park and John Leitch Memorial Park almost finished and Frank Nichols Park and Brendale Street Park just commencing. I hope to see many families at the Pine Rivers Christmas Carols on Sunday the 19th December at Pine Rivers Park. Bring a blanket and let’s get into the Christmas spirit with some songs, laughter and, of course Santa. Also, coming up we have the Aussie Arvo on Australia Day at the Lawnton Pool and Samford Music under the Stars on the 12 February. More details are in the latest edition of my newsletter. From my family and I, best wishes to you and your loved ones. I hope the Christmas and New year season is filled with laughter, peace, kindness and happiness. For those without the support of family at this time of year, know you are not alone and I encourage you to reach out to friends or support services. Councillor Cath Tonks

PROPERTY GUIDE Needless to say the property market is red hot at the moment. With this in mind, Echo News is delighted to bring our all new monthly North West Brisbane Property Guide to our newspapers. Read on to discover tips and tricks to help sell your home, maximise return and get ready for market.
Buying at Auction - What you need to know
If you’re heading to auction to buy your dream home, make sure you’re aware of the differences between buying a house under standard procedures as opposed to buying at auction. In short, if you buy at auction its final. There is no finance clause, no cooling off period, no get out of jail free card. The house is yours which means you need to have our building and pest reports finalised, and finance secured! Before the Auction Before the auction, make sure you; inspect the property, arrange your finance, get a property valuation, do your own research of the market and get a copy of the contract. In addition, it is wise to obtain legal advice about the terms and conditions in case you’re the successful bidder. Remember to do all the necessary checks, such as a title search, building and pest inspection and a land tax clearance search. At Auction Set a budget before the auction and stick to it. If you are the successful bidder, you will have to settle the contract, even if you can’t afford it.
Registered bidders If you want to bid, ask the auctioneer if there have been late changes to the contract (they must announce the terms at the start of the auction too) and ask any questions you have about the property also register with the auctioneer as only registered bidders can bid on the day. The auctioneer will give you a unique identifier such as a numbered paddle. Reserve Price The reserve price is the minimum sale price that the seller will accept. A seller doesn’t have to set a reserve price, but most will choose to have one. The auctioneer is allowed to tell you whether or not the seller has set a reserve price. However, the auctioneer must not tell you the reserve price itself. Once the reserve price is reached during bidding (or no reserve price is set), the property will be ‘on the market’. The Successful Bidder If you are the successful bidder, you must sign a contract immediately. There are very serious legal consequences if you cannot settle the sale on time.

From our first meeting to the finalisation of the sale, Bradley was e&tremely professional, knowledgeable and, most importantly to me, he was friendly, kind and compassionate throughout the whole process. I highly recommend Bradley and his team and am e&tremely grateful for the assistance and guidance offered throughout the whole home sale process.

Renovating shouldon thealways ADD $$$ market. Set reasonable expectations of your property’s
By Tracie Ellis, Founder & CEO of Renovators Directory
Home owners all renovate for different reasons. Whether it be to liberate your indoor/outdoor space, modernise your old home or are looking to sell. Regardless of your motivation, every dollar you invest should add value to your home. Perhaps your property hasn’t been renovated for a number of years, you might be considering making some changes. Now more than ever we are all spending a great deal of time within our home, so our everyday living areas need to function well. It is no secret that renovations come with a great deal of hard work, determination and upheaval. The results should outweigh the efforts and struggles along the way. An oldie but a goodie You may have lived in your home for many years and have pushed aside the fact that you need to renovate. An unmaintained home can be problematic. Broken tiles, structural issues and an inconvenient layout may be impacting your day to day life. Taking time to carefully plan which aspects of your home need attention, you can create mini projects which will come together with your overall main vision, and lift the value of your home. To sell Looking to put your home on the market? There are certain renovations that are crucial to secure buyer interest including: • Quality kitchen (indoor/outdoor); • Modern bathroom; • Outdoor entertaining area with a point of difference. Creating value is about being cost effective in your decisions and not spending more than your category of house could fetch
market price and work towards that. Decorating your house as inoffensively as possible, minimising loud colours, or amenities that only appeal to a small segment of the population. Simultaneously, adding touches that appeal across the board, like a walk-in shower and lots of storage throughout the house are good investments. Remember, value comes from how much other people are prepared to pay. Buyers must be able to imagine themselves moving in effortlessly. DIY V Industry Experts With reality shows ever present, home owners can be lulled into a false sense of security considering tackling renovations on their own. Engaging industry professionals will always give you a high quality outcome. They have the skills and experience to help you consider what is feasible and what is not, what your total costs will look like and the timeframe for the entire project. With the help of professionals, not only will you be spending only what you need, but you can also prevent wasting time, money and valuable resources. Embarking on a renovation by yourself with a view to DIY is ok, so long as you are prepared for the project to cost you more, take a lot longer to complete, and are aware that the process will possibly be a little frustrating. With careful planning and industry experts onboard, every dollar you spend will lift the value of your home. With an entire career spent in construction, Tracie Ellis is well respected for her industry knowledge. She is now leading the way to an exceptional experience in home renovation solutions for business and consumers alike.

Take the time to discover the Chatterbox difference!
Chatterbox Early Learning and Child Care – Albany Creek is a family owned and operated high quality early learning centre that services predominantly the Albany Creek and Eatons Hill community.
The centre was recently awarded ‘Exceeding the National Quality Standard’ by ACECQA in all seven areas of the National Quality Framework, the only long day care and education centre in Albany Creek to be awarded this accolade. This is a standard that parents should take into account when considering early learning and care for their children. More information can be found about this on acecqa.gov.au. Chatterbox was also recently recognised by Outdoors QLD as a finalist in the Nature Play Education Provider Awards for the wonderful work they do in providing the children with regular nature play in their programs. The Centre is lucky enough to sit right upon a green, open space parkland, with a nature reserve behind this area. A beautiful boardwalk approximately 300 metres in length weaves through this reserve, allowing the children to appreciate the local flora and fauna, including a large variety of birdlife that occupy it. This unique facility is the only recognised ‘Bush Kindy’ awarded service in the Albany Creek/Eatons Hill community which means that all of the children, even the babies, get regular opportunities to engage in nature play both outside and inside the gates. Nature play and nature walks outside the centre are a fundamental part of the program as they recognise the health and educational benefits of children regularly connecting to their natural environment. Each year, the Kindergarten children attend a ‘Bush Kindy’ day at the Bunyaville Environmental Education Centre and the Pre
www.echo-news.com.au
Chatterbox students enjoying one of their Nature Walks Kindy children take an excursion to Kumbartcho Sanctuary in Eatons Hill. Inside the centre, the outdoor environments offer mud pits, sandpits and native trees, shrubbery and bamboo for the children to explore. With such natural surroundings, it provides the children with rich opportunities for developing their imagination, inventiveness and resourcefulness allowing the children agency within their own play and learning. All of the classrooms run an indoor/outdoor program which enables children to access the outdoors at any time. This is particularly important to ensure those children who learn best through active movement have access to the outdoors regularly throughout the day. Chatterbox educators believe that when learning flows seamlessly between indoors and outdoors, while building on interests and curiosity; the developmental outcomes of children are greatly improved. Being outside exposes children to natural places to explore, experiment, discover, be active and healthy, and develop their physical capabilities… the benefits are endless!

The Pulse Pet Column
Welcome to a monthly column brought to you by the experienced veterinary team at Pulse Vets Warner. This month the team talk about the dangers of Toads to your pets.
Toad Toxicity
As the weather starts to warm up and the sun goes down. A pest known as cane toads start to come out from your gardens. Cane toads are toxic to our furry pets. They secrete toxins from glands at the back of the neck. Dogs especially puppies and hunting breeds are more commonly effected than cats. Toad toxicity is more prevalent in small dogs. Common signs of toxicity include visualization with a toad, acute profuse hypersalivation, pawing at the face, disorientation, and progression to muscle tremors and seizures. Presentation Common history is pet comes from outside to inside pawing at the mouth, drooling, and hypersalivating thick slimy saliva. You may have seen your pet chasing a toad, ferreting through the garden, or notice toads in the backyard. The pet usually

presents pawing at the mouth with profuse watery thick slimy salivation with disorientation. Your pet comes in contact with the toxin by mouthing, licking, or chewing the back of the toad. Toad Toxicity Due to the presence of multiple toxins stored in the glands, clinical signs can be variable. Toxicity tends to present with multiple physical signs. (a) Hallucinogenic effect leading to a high, euphoria, and disorientation. (b) Cardiovascular effect leading to shock effecting heartbeat from slow to rapid with irregular beats. (c) Nervous system effects leading to muscle rigidity, muscle tremors, seizures, and death. Common Clinical Signs • Profuse thick slimy hypersalivation, vomiting, and foaming at the mouth. • Red injected mucous membranes • Facial irritation and pawing at the mouth • Wobbliness, ataxia, pacing, and disorientation • Stretching out front and back legs, muscle rigidity, spasms and tremors progressing to grand mal seizures and death • Dilated pupils and sometimes rapid side to side eye movements ( nystagmus) • Pet can have slow to rapid heartbeats with irregular heartbeats (arrythmia) Initial Home Care If your pet is seen with a toad, a toad is noticed in the yard, or presents drooling with profuse thick slimy saliva. Consider toad toxicity as most likely cause. Provided your pet has not acutely collapsed, the first step is to grab a bucket of water and a cloth. Gently wash the mouth and gums with water and cloth frequently for a good 20 to 30 minutes. Do not use a hose or high-pressure water device eg shower as risk aspiration of the water. During and once completing, what is called a buccal lavage, monitor for progression of clinical signs. If progression of clinical signs occur it is recommended your pet is taken to a local veterinarian or after hours centre straight away. It is still recommended with an offsider you continue to perform buccal lavage as this may reduce the possibility of admission to your local veterinarian. It is common that just performing a buccal lavage is enough for large dogs as small dogs are more susceptible to toxicity. Any progression of toxicity warrants a trip to veterinarian as seizures are likely with progression of toxicity. Your veterinarian will most likely admit your pet to hospital and treat signs accordingly. If concerned about any subtle signs it is recommended to seek veterinary attention along with continued buccal lavage.

Pets N Christmas
Everyone gets excited about Christmas, and your pets are no exception!
With the festive season right around the corner, now is the perfect time to get your furry friend their presents for the year. Christmas is a time where everyone deserves to be spoilt. There is no reason not to spoil your four-legged family members, but owners still need to be mindful of the little extras that come with the festive season. Unfortunately, Christmas is also a time of danger. Hazards can come in all shapes and forms. Christmas lights, decorations, small ornaments, fatty leftovers, sweets, chocolates, and alcoholic drinks are all potential risks to pets. Owners need to be extra aware and careful during this season. No one wants Christmas to be interrupted or ruined. 2021 has been a long year, so remember to thank yourself and your pet companions with some presents. Fill their stockings with some Christmas treats, or gift them a new toy (or two) from ‘Santa Claws’. You can get them something to show off to everyone else - adorn them with some new bling or even a classy sweater! Maybe even a groom so they look their best for all the family photos. Or maybe you could spoil yourself with a new companion? That would be the best present any pet could receive. Now is the perfect time to get your furry (scaly or feathery) companions a present at the end of this long year. Come on down to Petaholic Warner to see our fantastic range of Christmas-themed toys, sweaters, treats, and so much more! Get them a gift they will use and remember forever. Written by Hannah Beard

Adopt! Don't Shop! Pooch of the Month
Pets
Welcome to our monthly dog adoption column brought to you by I Want A Greyhound (IWaG). Each month we will be showcasing one of their gorgeous pooches available for rehoming. This month, meet beautiful boy Kong! Are you looking for the pawfect companion? Meet 3-year-old Kong, he’s a gorgeous black boy, sporting a formal tuxedo white chest and white toe socks (just like his brother King). Kong is an incredibly sweet, happy go lucky kind of guy. He has been loving pet life in foster care and is now ready to start his next adventure with a forever home! Kong really likes to be involved in life. His forever home will be with someone who is around a lot, that can take him to work or has another dog for him to chill out with. With gentle introductions, we believe Kong would enjoy a home with kids to play with. Aside from being a total darling, Kong has an inquisitive nature, is very food motivated and is a very quick learner. During his time in care, Kong has mastered the sit command and stairs. He enjoys a daily stroll and is mostly good on the leash. Kong is still learning that cats and birds are friends not foe so is best suited to a home with large breed canine pals only, please. We see Kong flourishing in a patient home with someone who is open to investing time into his development through further training. In return, you will be rewarded with a loving snuggle bug who will make you laugh with his playful antics. Don’t snooze on this hunk, Kong is ready to take up residence in your home and heart. If Kong is the hound you've been waiting for, please call IWaG on 0421 298 979 or complete the adoption enquiry form on IWaG's website https://www.iwag.com.au/adoption-form

Dickson News Peter DUTTON MP Federal Member for Dickson
A Message from Peter The last couple of months have flown by and it’s hard to believe this will be my last column for the year. We are rapidly approaching Christmas and the holiday season and I hope you are able to enjoy a break with friends and family ahead of 2022. Thank you to all the students who entered my Christmas card competition, we had some amazing entries and it was incredibly hard to pick the winner in each category. I’d like to congratulate all those finishing year 12. I wish you all the best for your results and future endeavours, whether starting in the workforce or continuing on to complete further study, it is an exciting time and I wish you all the best. If you are travelling over the holidays, stay safe on the roads and enjoy your time away. I look forward to continuing my column in 2022. Best wishes Peter Dickson Seniors’ Expo 2021 I started the Dickson Seniors’ Expo in 2004 with the help of the Dickson Seniors’ Council to support seniors in our local community. Every year since, I have been a proud host and sponsor.
Peter DUTTON MP Federal Member for Dickson
Working hard. Getting results.
Dickson Seniors’ Expo This year’s Expo was held on Tuesday 9 November and was a great success bringing together seniors from all over our community. For the first ever time, we held the Expo at the South Pine Indoor Sports Complex, the new larger venue meant we were able to host over 1000 seniors at different timeslots across the day. The rain held off and by all accounts it was a fantastic success connecting many seniors with local service providers. Over 60 businesses, community groups and other services were showcased as well as special guest speakers and live entertainment. Thank you to all who attended and involved in making the event such a success. Australia Day Dickson Awards Seeking Nominees Nominations are now open for the 2022 Dickson Australia Day Awards. These awards recognise those who, through volunteer work or contributions above and beyond their normal activities, have made our community a better place. Some have made varying contributions over many years; some contribute to a particular area and the contributions of others have spread Australia wide. Excitingly, our 2022 Australia Day Awards ceremony will be our 21st year of acknowledging those who go above and beyond in our community. It will again coincide with our local Citizenship Ceremony, welcoming members of our community as Australia’s newest citizens. If you know someone who has gone above and beyond throughout this difficult year, please visit www.peterdutton.com.au/awards to nominate them for an award. I am looking forward to catching up with and thanking members of our community on Australia Day. What’s important to you? I want to know what’s important to you. We can work together to get the road, facilities and transport upgrades our community needs to get even better. Please get in touch with me at peter.dutton.mp@aph.gov.au or 3205 9977, stop by one of my mobile office caravan visits, or drop in to my office in Strathpine to let me know what your priorities are for our community.
