Blood cancer treatment remains to be almost triple the cost of other cancers, which is why the Leukaemia Foundation urges Australians to sign up to the 26th anniversary of the World’s Greatest Shave. With our support, our awareness, and our action, people impacted by blood cancer can be alleviated.

For the 26th anniversary of the World’s Greatest Shave, Leukaemia Foundation urges Australians to sign up to shave, cut, or colour their hair in order to raise vital funds to help fellow community members battle blood cancer with an army of supporters behind them. An opportunity to get involved just so happens to be right on our doorstep.

The World’s Greatest Shave has become an annual tradition at the Albany Creek Tavern, bringing together community groups to raise money and awareness for blood cancer, including Apex, Albany Creek Tavern Social Club, Lions Club, Leukaemia Foundation Albany Creek Branch, local hairdressers, and retailers. It is a testament to the community spirit of the region, the way people have rallied to support a cause so dear to them. Sadly, blood cancer runs rampant in our local area, which is why the Leukaemia Foundation Albany Creek Branch was first established in 2001 by Kaye and Glen Fox. The couple lost their daughter to leukaemia 26 years ago. Albany Creek Tavern has long since become a vessel for action, playing host to World’s Greatest Shave events for years now. Ange Ferguson, a proud volunteer at the Leukaemia Foundation Albany Creek Branch, reminisces with Echo News about how the first ever Shave organised at the tavern involved a local councillor agreeing to chop off his trade-mark tail! Last year, local hairdresser Arren from Hairologists and long-time supporter of the World’s Greatest Shave, had his own ‘tail’ cut

off in support of the Leukaemia Foundation and people living with blood cancer.

This year’s event will be held on Friday 15th March from 5pm at the Albany Creek Tavern, marking the 26th anniversary of this great initiative. Celebrating 60 Years of Community Spirit at Aspley Hornets

Since its establishment in 1964, the Aspley Hornets Football Club has been a cornerstone of the Aspley, Carseldine, and surrounding communities.

What began as a junior club has blossomed into a multifaceted organisation, providing a pathway for players from Auskick at age 6 all the way through to Masters for those over 35.

In response to the growing needs of its players, the club expanded into senior football during the Seventies and Eighties, ensuring seamless progression for athletes without the hassle of changing clubs.

The evolution of the Aspley Hornets extends beyond the football field. From humble beginnings as a community hall, the club’s clubhouse has transformed into a thriving hub featuring a spacious restaurant, members’ lounge, bar areas, bottle shop, and versatile function rooms. With 167 poker machines, Keno, and TAB facilities, it has become a central gathering place for locals.

To commemorate this milestone, the Hornets invite the community to join them on Sunday, March 24th, from 3pm onwards for a family-friendly outdoor extravaganza. Festivities will include rides, carnival games, face painting, live music, food vans, outdoor bars, and will culminate in a spectacular fireworks display at 7pm.

Aspley Hornets’ 60th anniversary celebration is not only a tribute to its rich history but also a testament to its enduring commitment to fostering community spirit and providing topnotch sporting and social experiences.

Edible Garden Trail Gears Up for Its Fifth Blossoming Year

In the fertile soil of community spirit, the seed of the Samford Edible Garden Trail (SEGT) was sown five years ago.

Now, as the Trail approaches its fifth annual showcase this May, what started as a tiny seed has burgeoned into a thriving weekend of inspiration and connection for the entire community.

Amidst the challenges of summer storms, some plants have weathered the tempests, while others have flourished in the warm, humid embrace, yielding delicious fruits.

The SEGT team had the privilege of witnessing this firsthand during a recent visit to the garden of Pauline and Rob, who will once again open their edible oasis for display during the Trail weekend in May.

Save the dates for the Samford Edible Garden Trail – May 18th and 19th – a weekend set to be a celebration of green thumbs, sustainable living, and the flourishing sense of community. Tickets for this botanical adventure will sprout in March, and enthusiasts are encouraged to stay tuned to the SEGT's Facebook or Instagram for updates and information about the Trail. More than just a showcase of gardens and harvests, the SEGT has grown into a community-building initiative, cultivating not only food but also friendships. Scouts Shine on Murrenbong Dam in Petrie Training Expedition

Last month, Murrenbong Dam at Petrie became the playground for 30 scouts and leaders from the Sir Leslie Wilson Scout District.

The group gathered for an immersive training session in basic canoeing skills, setting the stage for an upcoming expedition on the Noosa River.

The training, which honed in on fundamental skills, proved to be both educational and adventurous, providing scouts with essential knowledge before embarking on their upcoming Noosa River adventure. Among the challenges faced by the scouts was the formation of a ‚star‘ raft—a unique and engaging exercise that added an element of teamwork to their skill-building endeavors.

The highlight of the training was the capsize drills, where scouts learned the critical techniques for rescuing a capsized canoe in deep waters. These hands-on experiences not only enhanced their proficiency in canoeing but also instilled a sense of confidence for the upcoming expedition.

The 30 scouts hailed from six local Scout groups, namely Enoggera, Everton Park, Grovely-Mitchelton, McDowallBunya, Samford, and Wahminda Park (Ferny Grove). The diverse representation showcased the community spirit and camaraderie fostered within the Sir Leslie Wilson Scout District.

Onwards and Upwards for Run With Rob

From humble beginnings, Run With Rob has grown from a small group of friends running socially into a club with a membership exceeding 500 runners (highlighting more than 200 members are in the Brisbane metro area alone)! Founded by Rob Hopkinson and headquartered in Eatons Hill, RWR now has several clubs across Australia.

Given this expansion, as RWR enters its 10th year, club directors Rob and Richelle Hopkinson as well as Teri Pearce are spearheading initiatives to not only accommodate for its large membership, but to also attract new runners, walkers and sponsors.

Recently, RWR became affiliated with Qrun – the recreational running arm of Queensland Athletics – which is the governing body for the sport of athletics in Queensland (under the broader umbrella organisation of Athletics Australia).

To maintain this affiliation, RWR will be introducing a fee of $52 per adult (and $40 per child) for a 12-month membership – an extremely competitive rate when compared to other running clubs. However, in maintaining its commitment to being a community non-profit organisation, 100 per cent of additional revenue will be donated to charities (with beneficiaries including Small Steps 4 Hannah and A Brave Life). Importantly, RWR will offer a one-week trial for prospective members before being asked to apply.

In addition to gaining the ability to compete as a group team at Qrun and Queensland Athletics events, this affiliation will deliver insurance coverage to RWR members during approved club running and training events.

This builds on RWR’s pre-existing capacity to offer club discounts to members for major running events including (but not limited to) the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast marathon festivals, as well as the Jetty 2 Jetty Fun Run in Redcliffe. RWR provides access to Queensland Athletics qualified coaches to support its members in achieving their running and fitness goals, through personalised training plans and leadership of running sessions. However, RWR is endeavouring to build this base of expertise through sponsoring some of its selected athletes to become certified coaches.

Similarly, RWR will be seeking to offer workshops and information sessions on various topics to assist its members on becoming well rounded runners and athletes. Examples of this will include: nutrition and meal planning; running technique; strength development and stretching; and meditation and mindfulness. There will also be opportunities for members to gather for complementary exercises and activities, including parkruns and swimming training.

While RWR has an incredible membership base, as a club, it could not exist without its amazing sponsors. Primarily comprising small-to-medium enterprises located in Brisbane’s north, RWR has built positive and productive relationships with the business community. More than being the financial lifeblood for the club, RWR’s various sponsors generously donate products for fundraising events as well as discounts for services (ranging from podiatry to physiotherapy to photography) to club members.

Highlighting RWR’s core message that ‘every stride makes a difference,’ nowhere is this more vital than the strides the club makes with its existing and emerging commercial partners, with new offers welcomed by RWR’s directors for discussion. Internationally Acclaimed Chef Inspires Probus Club

In a flavourful meeting held on 1st February at the Hornets Club, Carseldine, the Probus Club of Albany Creek had the pleasure of hosting renowned international Chef Lisa Mead as their guest speaker. President Maureen Moseley conducted an engaging interview, unraveling Chef Mead's fascinating journey as a highly regarded chef across various countries and private yachts.

Chef Mead showcased her culinary prowess by whipping up a delectable filo flower with chantilly cream and berries, providing a taste of her extraordinary skills to the attending members. During her address, Chef Mead shared insights into the challenges of her unique profession, highlighting the unpredictability of weather conditions and the meticulous management required for special guests and crew preferences. Reflecting on her experiences abroad, Chef Mead emphasised the absence of 24/7 access to shops and the lack of a supporting staff, underscoring the demands of her culinary ventures. Since her return to Australia, she has made her base here, working with three super yachts located in Queensland and Sydney.

Flood Event

Our community is once again facing a tough time due to recent swift flood damage, and the rebuilding process will take time. It’s a big job ahead of us, but witnessing our community come together during this challenging time is inspiring and I know we will emerge from this stronger than before.

Thank you to the many emergency services personnel and volunteers who joined to help others in need, including during the clean-up. Your efforts have been inspirational.

A busy few weeks!

The new parliamentary year started on 6 February, and I’m determined to continue to hold the Albanese Labor Government accountable for their growing list of broken promises.

I‘ve been busy visiting various areas in Dickson, participating in local events, and supporting our local businesses. The increasing cost of living is impacting Australian families and small businesses significantly. Therefore, my focus is on finding solutions that benefit both our community and country.

What’s Happening in Parliament

Last week was the first parliamentary sitting for 2024.

LNP Opposition focused their questions on the youth crime crisis and the increased electricity charges Queenslanders have been hit with.

The LNP has been pressuring the state Labor government to ensure there are consequences for criminal actions. The alleged murder at Redbank Plain shopping centre has sent shockwaves through all communities. Action must be taken now. The independent auditor-general recently reported that

the failure at the Callide Power station nearly 3 years ago is a contributing factor to the increased electricity costs we are all experiencing. It’s imperative that the state government gets cracking in fixing this breakdown as soon as possible to help relieve the cost-of-living pressures Queenslanders are currently experiencing.
