Hotel Giants Redesign and Redefine Strathpine
In a transformative move set to revitalise Strathpine, the Comiskey Group, Queensland’s hospitality juggernaut, unveils plans for a groundbreaking $2.4 billion development project.
Set to be developed at 90 Gympie Road, the project will span nearly 5 hectares and aims to cater to diverse recreational and entertainment needs. The cornerstone of this ambitious endeavour is a multi-purpose complex featuring a hotel/club, indoor sports facilities, dining establishments, retail outlets, and a drive-through food and drink venue, accompanied by ample parking space exceeding 500 spots. Renowned for iconic establishments like Eatons Hills Hotel and the Samford Hotel, the Comiskey Group’s vision extends beyond conventional hospitality, aiming to create an all-encompassing destination experience.
According to I.B Town Planning designers, the development is poised to become a landmark not only for Strathpine but for the entire Moreton Bay Region. Envisioned as a gateway entrance, the complex is slated to house a plethora of recreational activities, including rock climbing, indoor golf, motor sports, trampolining, and skating, promising an immersive experience for visitors of all ages.
Moreover, the project is anticipated to generate employment opportunities, with up to 400 jobs projected, spanning both temporary and permanent positions, thereby contributing to the local economy’s growth.
It has also recently been announced that the development will include a sprawling play centre operated by Area 51, renowned for its flagship venue in Underwood, and a state-of-the-art gokart track designed by industry leaders 360 Karting, which will span 3 levels. With these novel inclusions, the development
will certainly cater to the growing demand for family-friendly entertainment options in Brisbane’s north and add an element of novelty to the region’s leisure landscape.
As a nod to Strathpine’s rich heritage, the new establishment will bear the name ‘Country Club Hotel’, paying homage to its predecessor, which stood as a beloved landmark for over two decades.
With plans underway and anticipation building, the Comiskey Group’s visionary project signals a new era of growth and vitality for Strathpine, poised to elevate the region’s status to a premier destination for residents and visitors alike.

Backing a local business has never been easier with Moreton Money
City of Moreton Bay, in partnership with local business groups, is calling for the community to support local businesses by choosing a Moreton Money gift card for their next gift. With the recent introduction of digital gift cards, purchasing and using these cards has never been easier.
Mayor Peter Flannery said the cards can now be used like a normal EFTPOS card, making it easier for the community to spend their money how they want, and where they want.
‘Moreton Money gift cards now directly download to the mobile digital wallet, meaning supporting a local business is just a tap of the phone away,’ he said.
Moreton Money is an initiative that encourages the community to make the active choice to support their local businesses and consider changing their spending habits.
‘Small businesses, which are the backbone of the Moreton Bay economy, have been doing it tough in recent years with flood events, COVID-19 and skyrocketing costs across the board.
‘Instead of filling the pockets of huge corporations that are recording massive profits, I urge our community to think locally first. Purchasing a Moreton Money gift card makes a real difference to locals and the success of our small businesses.’
Moreton Money provides a wide variety of options for recipients to use their gift card in businesses and stores across Moreton Bay, spanning various industries and geographical
areas. There are hundreds of businesses already registered, and more coming online daily.
Back a local business and our whole community benefits with every $100 spent locally, generating around $180 of economic impact.
The Hills & Districts Chamber of Commerce Craig Shim believes Moreton Money is a game-changer for our community.
‘Moreton Money is all about making it easy to shop local and support local businesses, whether you’re treating yourself or giving a thoughtful gift, Moreton Money helps keep our money circulating right here in Moreton Bay, which is fantastic for everyone,’ Craig said.
‘Local spending is like fuel for our community’s economic engine, when we choose to shop at a local business, we’re not just making purchases, we’re investing in our neighbourhoods, supporting local jobs and keeping our communities unique and thriving.’
Moreton Money is part of Council’s Regional Economic Development Strategy (REDS), a blueprint for a bigger, bolder, and brighter economy which will ultimately create 100,000 new jobs in Moreton Bay through to 2041.

Local Acrobatic Gymnasts Represent Australia on an International Stage
By Georgia WrightThis May, four groups left their stomping grounds at Brisbane City Gymnastics Club to try on Portugal’s Gymnastics Hall for size during the Maia International Acro Cup 2024. Better yet—Echo News has been fortunate enough to get an exclusive inside scoop from one of the competing teams!
Four and a half years ago, Lisa Gardiner (18) and Mia Krone (15) embarked on a shared journey of rigorous training and persistence—all to fulfil one goal: to represent Australia at the World Age Group Competition in Acrobatic Gymnastics. This dream, however, was not an easy pursuit. Their journey has been entirely self-funded, requiring considerable sacrifices from both the athletes and their families, as well as long hours spent training at the Brisbane City Gymnastics Club in Brendale with coaches Farkas Pungar, Reka Pungur, Taylah Kinshela and Choreographer Ezster Pungur.
As shared by Bec and Trish—the girls’ mothers—the women’s pair began their journey at the 2021 National Championships, where they showcased their prowess and earned a spot on the Acrobatic Gymnastics National Squad. However, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted their plans, leading to the cancellation of the 2022 World Championships selection trials. Undeterred, they redirected their focus towards the 2024 World Acrobatic Championships.
Overcoming hurdles and setbacks, Lisa and Mia ventured overseas to Portugal, participating in the Maia International
Acro Cup in 2022 and 2023, where they clinched an impressive 4th place.
Their perseverance paid off in the end, as they surpassed the rigorous selection criteria at the World Trials in Sydney, November 2023 and secured their spots to represent Australia at the Acrobatic World Age Championships in Portugal, September 2024. Recently, Gymnastics Australia nominated several international groups to compete under the Australian banner at the Maia International Acro Cup—an event Lisa and Mia were scheduled to fly out for on May 8th.
In reflection of their dedicated preparation efforts, Lisa and Mia acknowledge the sheer intensity and sacrifices demanded by their sport in order to build the necessary strength for success. The women’s pair has been training 22 hours a week/6 day a week in the lead up to the competition, as well as competing at Queensland State Team Trials in the hope of representing Queensland in June 2024!
Bec and Trish share, ‘We are all very excited to be travelling and attending this competition. Some nerves have started to set in, but their consistent training and determination has prepared them to be competitive against these world class athletes.’
Despite the nerves and excitement preceding the competition, Lisa and Mia stand proud to don the Green and Gold, representing their country on the global stage.
Newsflash...we hear that Lisa and Mia, have made it to the finals as we go to press. Best of luck girls!

Life on the ice for a local Navy meteorologist
People who think meteorologists in Australia are under pressure to get the forecast right should spare a thought for those working in frigid extremes with the Australian Antarctic Program.
One of those was Lieutenant Holly Boubouras, who grew up in McDowall and attended St Rita's College. Holly is now a Navy meteorologist from the Maritime Geospatial Warfare Unit, deployed to Casey Station during four months over summer. She was one in a long line of Navy meteorologists who’ve filled a role each season since 2009.
Beyond providing daily forecasts for the Australian stations, Casey, Mawson and Davis, the on-watch meteorologist also provides forecasting for field science projects, marine forecasts and operations support.
It’s a job made more complicated by what’s called the “A-factor”, or Antarctic Factor, according to Lieutenant Boubouras.
Meteorologists must grapple with limited observation equipment and satellite coverage, along with strong winds and intermittent internet access.
“Blizzards are a common occurrence, and advanced warning is required for each work group to secure their equipment to avoid it becoming a projectile hazard,” Lieutenant Boubouras said. They also produce aviation forecasts for local rotary and fixedwing flights, and flights from Hobart to Wilkins Aerodrome.
Lieutenant Boubouras provided route forecasts for the Million Year Ice Core Project traverse team, who travelled 1200km inland from Casey Station.
The extent of tasks often means the station’s meteorologist office opens at 4am, with three forecasters on a watch-keeping roster and one supporting from Hobart.
For Lieutenant Boubouras, the extreme conditions of Antarctica make it the highpoint of a meteorologist’s career.
‘The absence of roads makes aviation operations crucial, where meteorologists play a key role in ensuring safe flights through monitoring a range of hazards and weather phenomena specific to Antarctica,’ she said.
Lieutenant Boubouras said her deployment to such a unique environment significantly enhanced her skills as a meteorologist.
‘The most recent summer season facilitated the busiest aviation program the Australian Antarctic Program has ever undertaken with 16 A319 Airbus and seven RAAF C17A Globemaster inter-continental flights, amongst others. We also provided forecasts for RSV Nuyina and RV Investigator, coastal water forecasts and route forecasts for the traverse team travelling 1200km inland for the Million Year Ice Core Project. These operational forecasts increased my workload capacity and ability to convey meteorological forecasts to a variety of stakeholders.’
Lieutenant Boubouras will bring the skills and experience she obtained in Antarctica back to her Navy forecasting.
Before reaching the continent, Lieutenant Boubouras underwent survival training, including sleeping overnight on the ice.
Lieutenant Boubouras also visited remote locations such as Robbo’s Hut, offering a glimpse into the challenging life of early Antarctic pioneers.
Holly in Antarctica with one of the modes of transport used to get around.
She had a summer swim in freezing waters surrounded by towering icebergs, and visited the penguin colony at Shirley Island.
‘For a more intimate encounter of the environment, inflatable rubber boat tours in Newcombe Bay unveil the mesmerising beauty of icebergs and surrounding islands,’ Lieutenant Boubouras said.
‘Antarctica itself transforms from simply being a frozen, barren continent, to testament of the resilience of both the environment and those fortunate enough to call it home, making the frozen continent a place of unparalleled fascination and enduring awe.’

How Far One Inspiring Local Went To Make a Difference
By Georgia WrightLeisa Byes, a local legend and proud teacher who’s dedicated 23 years of her life to Hillbrook School in Enoggera, has taken on a personal and heartfelt challenge to make a difference in the lives of those affected by cancer.
On Friday, 10 May, during a school assembly, Leisa shaved off her long hair and went completely bald! This generous act of compassion as driven by her desire to fundraise for two charities close to her heart—Myeloma Australia and the Australian & New Zealand Sarcoma Association (ANZSA).
In October 2023, the cherished Principal of Hillbrook School Maria Woods passed away after a courageous battle with myeloma, which is a cancer of plasma cells. Maria was more than just a leader; she was an embodiment of strength and resilience to her school community. In her memory, Leisa supported Myeloma Australia, an Australian not-for-profit organization dedicated to supporting and advocating for those affected by myeloma. So far, Maria’s JustGiving fundraising campaign for this charity has raised $2,078.
To donate, you can head to https://www.justgiving.com/page/ leisa-bye-headshave
As well, one of Hillbrook’s Year 11 students, Alice, has shown remarkable courage in her fight against cancer over the past nine months. In honour of her friend Andie, who sadly lost her battle to osteosarcoma in March 2024, Alice chose to support ANZSA. This organization is the peak body for sarcoma research, education, and awareness, dedicating 100% of donations to essential research and clinical trials.
Inspired by Alice's selflessness and bravery, Leisa has also raised funds for ANZSA. She has so far raised $2,040 on her MyCause fundraising page. These funds will contribute to improving the lives of sarcoma patients through groundbreaking research and better treatment options. To donate, you can head to https://www.mycause.com.au/p/342486/shaving-myhair-to-honour-alice-andie
Sadly, the significance of Leisa’s noble sacrifice does not end there. In 2015, she lost her beloved 32-year-old sister-in-law to brain cancer, leaving behind her two young boys of ages 4 and 6. Now aged 14 and 16, the boys have watched their father—Leisa’s brother—battle his own cancer. Witnessing their strength and resilience has been both heartbreaking and inspiring, reinforcing Leisa determination to contribute to the fight against cancer.
Leisa’s involvement in Growl Theatre at Windsor for the past
12 years and the local country music scene for 24 years has proved to her the power of community. These experiences, combined with her rewarding career at Hillbrook School, have demonstrated that by working together, you can overcome anything.
On 10 May, as Leisa shaved her head, she did not just let go of her hair, but also embraced the hope and strength of her community. She invites everyone and anyone to join her on this ever-necessary journey of battling cancer.
Let's honour Maria and Andie, support Alice, and stand with all those affected by cancer. As one, we can make a lasting impact.
As Leisa pleads across both campaigns, “Help us make a difference.”

Increased demand for spiritual support through palliative care
Karuna Hospice Service is experiencing an increased demand for their spiritual care support services, for people receiving palliative or end of life care.
Spiritual care recognises a patient’s unique traditions, beliefs and practices, and provides guidance on how they can be used to bring peace of mind and comfort following a terminal diagnosis.
Karuna Chairman Dr John Gilmour said as a Buddhist based organisation, spiritual support is an integral part of the care offered to patients and families and supports people of all faiths, beliefs and those with no belief system at all.
‘When spiritual care is offered alongside traditional medical support, it may help to alleviate some of the complex emotions surrounding diagnosis and treatment. We help patients and families to gently accept their diagnosis, to live well, and to find peace in the inevitability of death,’ said Dr Gilmour.
‘Although spiritual care looks different for everyone, it could mean strengthening their religious belief or faith, supporting cultural practices and rituals, or simply deepening connections between family, friends, the environment, or a patient’s own confidence during such an emotional time.’
Spiritual wellbeing has been a pillar of Karuna’s care since its conception in 1992, when Venerable Pende Hawter had a vision to provide community palliative care at home, at no cost, to help alleviate the fear and suffering that comes with dying.
‘When people live alongside an awareness of their death, it
can support them through their terminal illness and shift their perspective, allowing for a more meaningful and intentional life. Every day we ensure that Pende’s vision for living well and dying peacefully remains at the heart of what we do at Karuna.’
‘By making a tax-deductible gift today you can help patients and families access essential services such as spiritual care and counselling. A donation before 30 June will help fund Karuna’s holistic services during the next financial year.’

Many of our longtime locals will have fond memories of the days when drive-in cinemas were the heart of community entertainment.
Families and friends would gather under the open sky, tuning their car radios to the movie’s frequency, and enjoying a shared cinematic experience from the comfort of their vehicles. These nostalgic venues provided a unique blend of film, fun, and fellowship . Here is a little run down on two of the popular Drive In’s that were once more than just a place to watch movies—they were a cherished part of Brisbane’s cultural fabric.
The Aspley Starlight Drive In: This popular Drive-in was a cherished local icon, located on Albany Creek Road and was first opened on January 31, 1957. Its inaugural film on Field 1 was ‘Hit the Deck’ starring Debbie Reynolds. On August 31, 1989, a second screen was added, premiering with ‘Dead Calm’ and ‘Lethal Weapon 2.’ The drive-in’s final showings on February 23, 2002, featured ‘From Hell’ and ‘Shallow Hal.’ Keperra Drive In: The Keperra Drive in opened in 1966 and was located on the southwest corner of Samford Road and Settlement Road. It started with one screen, and a second screen was added around 1991, although it closed its doors in 1998 and was demolished (date unknown?),
While both the above drive-ins enjoyed immense popularity, the emergence of new multiplex cinemas in nearby shopping centres led to a decline in attendance at both locations. Moreover, with southeast Queensland’s population on the rise, these large plots of land became highly desirable to developers. Keperra Drive In is now known as the Kings Grove Housing Estate and the first developer to purchase the land at Aspley Drive In named the estate Aspley Keep.

Planting Out The Crop
An update from the Hills Organic Garden
It has been all hands on deck at the Hills Organic Garden Club with planting beginning in earnest.
The weather at the moment is great, with enough rain to sustain new plants and the temperature has cooled down quite a lot. With the soil still being warm, this has provided ideal conditions to begin planting the 2024 crop. Beetroot, Pak Choy, Spinach, Lettuce, Carrots, Beans and Silverbeet have all been planted and with the warm soil, plants should be able to establish a good root system before the colder weather arrives. There are also a few sweet potatoes for members to take home and the pumpkins won't be too far away.
The Rosella bushes are producing well and members have been making some very tasty rosella jam. Furthermore, the herb garden is truely blossoming with flowering basil which is attracting the bees, society garlic (which has beautiful lavender flowers which are edible), thyme, tarragon, mother of herbs and garlic chives.
At the moment, our The HOG community is a friendly group who offer people in the Hills District the opportunity to grow vegetables using organic principles. Age is no barrier so feel free to pop along one Sunday afternoon to have a chat and a look around the beautiful garden.
As we head into winter and the days get shorter, members will now meet on a Sunday afternoon from 2pm - 4pm. As well, they also attend the garden through the week to water and do general maintenance. You will find the Garden at 416 Bunya Road, Bunya next to the Off Leash Dog Park. Visit www.hog. org.au, search The Hills Organic Garden on Facebook or phone 0415 856 532 for information.
Potting Plants Safely
An update from the Mitchelton & Districts Garden Club
Many speakers who visit our Club stress the importance of wearing a mask when handling potting mix.
We are often advised of the dangers posed due to the potential presence of harmful microorganisms, dust and chemicals in various potting mixes. As a helpful reminder to all greenthumbs, here are some specific risks to be mindful of:
1. Respiratory Irritation and Allergic Reactions: Potting mix often contains dust particles, fungal spores and other allergens that can irritate the respiratory system and lead to symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, throat irritation, difficulty breathing and skin rashes.
2. Microbial Infections:Potting mix can harbour harmful bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms, especially if it has been stored improperly. Inhaling these microorganisms can increase the risk of serious respiratory infections such as Aspergillosis and (more rarely) Legionnaires’ disease.
4. Chemical Exposure: Potting mix may contain fertilizers, pesticides, and other chemicals that can be harmful if inhaled. Continuous exposure can lead to symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, headaches, and in severe cases, organ damage.
5. Pregnancy Risks: Pregnant individuals should be especially cautious when handling potting mix, as some components may pose risks to fetal development if inhaled or absorbed through the skin.
To minimize these risks, wearing a mask rated for particulate matter (such as an N95) while handling potting mix is highly recommended. Additionally, working in a well-ventilated area, using gloves to minimize skin contact and washing hands thoroughly after handling potting mix will further reduce potential hazards.
Club Treasurer, Gavin Shanks, using recommended safety wear.

Volunteers Needed! Help Preserve Our History
It is reported and recorded that volunteering was done to give aid to the poor and sick in early times. By the 19th century, more organisations were committed to making a positive impact by introducing volunteers. The word “vol-un-teer” is described as a person who works for an organisation without being paid.
Being a volunteer, besides helping in different circumstances, is all good for the soul, their persona, well-being, meeting new people, and keeping mentally fit and healthy. This is no exception at the Samford Museum. Each facet of this organisation relies on volunteers.
Our visits from different schools are increasing, mainly due to the fact that the curriculum in the classroom has changed somewhat. And that is where the museum comes into play. Comparing ‘years gone by’ and ‘present-day living.’ A big requirement is to help and assist the schoolchildren in each display, to showcase what we are all about. Our request to you is: are you able to join us as a volunteer? We induct and orientate new people, acquaint them with activities, and give a guided tour and introduction to the many displays and volunteers, which also includes learning what we can pass on to the schoolchildren. The hours you volunteer are up to you- maybe one day, two days, or your choice. A blue card is required to work with schoolchildren in this area. We provide morning tea and lunch.
We have ‘upstairs’ in the main building, where we have many talented people. An historian who was born here is kept busy recording and receiving pertinent and valuable material. The secretary, who handles all of our office work, plus much more. The curator receives donations and accessions them, then adds them to the database. It is necessary to record the whereabouts of all donated items.
Volunteers organise, display, and collate relevant information for upcoming special occasions. This is always a big job. Relevant data on the museums’ displays is researched, written, and collated into a story passing on the history of the area, which is then published in many local papers. Our “go-to ” person, who is capable of different jobs, and last but not least, our treasurer.
And ‘downstairs,’ the volunteers mainly restore very old machinery: lawn mowers, tractors, drays, wheelbarrows, old pumps, gardening, and generally tidying up. Racking up leaves, painting restored items, and helping with demonstrations. And helping set up on demonstrating days. Or a general rouse-about.
It is worth a minute of your time to sit and ponder where you could be one of the many appreciated volunteers. Or assist when you are available. Morning tea and lunch are provided. Please feel free to contact us on 07 3289 2743 or visit us at 21 Station Street, Samford Village. Adults: $5 – children: $1. Open Wednesday and Sunday 10am - 4pm
Set Sail for Laughter and Drama
An update from The Hills Players
Some of the cast from ‘A Night with Robinson Crusoe’
The Hills Players are excited to invite you to their production of ‘A Night with Robinson Crusoe,’ an Australian play by Linda Ronson.
As with any production there is so much to do, rehearsals, choose costumes, source props, complete the set, organise sound and lighting and finally PERFORM.
A Night with Robinson Crusoe is about a party of six shop assistants who decide to be daring and go on ‘A Ladies Only’ Sydney Harbour Cruise. Moving and funny, the play deals with marriage, bereavement, friendship and the demands of unlovely adult children.
The cast have enjoyed exploring the complexities of the six protagonists; to say they are interesting is an understatement. The characters display moments of sweetness, warmth, desperation, outrageous humour, and frustration, as the mayhem and fun unfolds.
So, if you’re ready to embark on this journey along the Sydney Harbour, where there is no shortage of entertainment, be sure to get in early to secure your seats. Performance dates are 7th, 8th and 14th, 15th June at 7.30pm at St Matthews Church Hall at Mitchelton. For bookings, please phone 3355 7319 or 3351 4496 or alternatively email: hillsplayers@gmail.com.
The Hills Players look forward to seeing you there.

Breaking Down Barriers To Volunteering
Where would we be without our volunteers?
from your State Member for Everton TIM MANDER
They are the backbone of many Queensland communities; however, the State of Volunteering in Queensland 2024 Report has revealed a decline in volunteering under the PalaszczukMiles Government.
Last week the LNP has announced we will hold a Parliamentary Inquiry into Breaking Down Barriers to Volunteering, if elected in October. Here in Everton, we celebrate our volunteers every year and would love to see more done to support them.
Volunteers are the heart and soul of our communities, and their contributions won't go overlooked or undervalued under an LNP government.
We will empower our volunteers and our community organisations to continue their vital work in our communities. Supporting volunteering is a priority for us because it’s a priority for Queenslanders.
Student Leaders at Parliament
Over the last few weeks, it has been my pleasure to welcome the Senior School leaders from Everton Park State High, Albany Creek State High, Mt Maria College, Northside Christian College, and Prince of Peace Lutheran College to Parliament House.
It is very encouraging to meet these bright individuals and hear their views on some of the current issues facing the youth of today.
Opening of Wantima Water Harvesting Project
In September last year Cr Cath Tonks and I had the honour of breaking ground on Wantima Country Club’s Eco-friendly Water Harvesting Project which can hold 46 mega litres and provides a beautiful natural environment for local wildlife, and earlier this month we were invited back to open the completed project. It looks amazing and is a great addition to the club.
