The Strength of One with the Support of Many
For our much-loved Gaythorne local, Joshua Burgess, these past 6-12 months have been nothing short of a living nightmare, with much of his time spent in and out of medical chairs and hospital wards.
However, thanks to the support of many—namely, our generous community members—Josh is now travelling happily along his road to recovery! Early 2020 was when Josh first noticed a rash on his forehead. After consulting doctor after dermatologist after doctor again, Josh was still unaware of the rash’s origins, as well as what it would soon lead to. It wasn’t until August that Josh was admitted to hospital with an unrelated bowel issue diverticulitis, which then led to CT scans that exposed a lymphoma growth. Following an additional biopsy, his surgeon’s suspicions were confirmed; Josh had cancer. Luckily, as far as cancers go, Josh’s diagnosis was one of the ‘good ones’, being follicular lymphoma, which is neither aggressive nor terminal. After his first round of treatment in September, his formally stubborn rash vanished, and hope began to spark in his heart. One night in February, when Josh was watching television, an advertisement for the World’s Greatest Shave popped up and his hope only grew. After a little apprehension about sharing his diagnosis with workmates, Josh dove head first into the Shave on March 5th, all guns blazing. ‘It’s just hair!’ he told himself. But it was so much more than just hair—with the generosity and support of 12 workmates at BDO Brisbane, Josh was able to help raise money and awareness for many families struggling in the same boat as him. For reference, BDO is a
nationwide company focused on delivering services that help drive organisations forward, such as audits, bookkeeping, finance solutions, and tax. Josh’s initial goal of $2,500 was completely blown out of the water, with the final amount raised at the company-wide event coming in as $20,709. This even surpasses Josh’s later goal of $16,955 (chosen because it equates the number of people who are diagnosed each year). Rest assured, Josh revealed, ‘I had my final round of chemo this morning and things are looking good! I still have 19 months of immunotherapy (which is new treatment only made possible through the research funded by these charities like Leukemia Foundation) but there are no side effects. Life can pretty much get back to normal for me!’ A heart-warming outcome for Josh indeed, and all at the hands of our awesome community! Truly, the strength of one can be enhanced by the support of many.

Can girls be Scouts too?
A monthly update from the Enoggera Scouts
As Scouts, we seem to get asked this a lot. And of course the answer is a big, resounding YES!
The Hurdcotte Street Hall
Here at Enoggera, we have a number of girls across all of our Scout groups. The numbers do fluctuate as young people move groups,
and come and go. But having girls in Scouts is really important as it provides a realistic way of supporting young people to take their places naturally in the wider community. It helps to break down gender stereotypes and provides an excellent foundation for the development of realistic, meaningful and lasting relationships in later life. Prepares Scouts for the real world Scouting provides opportunities for young people to make sense of society – allowing them to use these skills when they enter in the real world where different genders co-exist, especially at work. Challenges sexism Scouts provides an environment that gives girls and boys the chance to express themselves and explore each other’s
perspectives and their differences when it comes to views. Teaches equality When boys and girls work together and participate in Scouting activities, they actively learn about equality. Promotes socialisation Scouts provides a structured and positive environment for young people to interact and talk to members of the opposite sex. Improves communication skills Since Scouting has both girls and boys, Scouts experience the different ways genders have of expressing themselves, which helps each individual with diverse communication skills. To find out more about Scouts, or to have a free trial, please call us on 3355 1916 or 0439 677 755 or email contact@ enoggera.scoutsqld.com.au. Women’s Shed Powers into 2021
W h i l e t h e M e n ’s S h e d movement is well established within Brisbane, the sister movement of the Women’s Shed is far less so. However, that is soon set to change with the formation of the Women’s’ Shed at Ferny Grove (WSFG)—a first of its kind in Brisbane. It’s also one of the few across Australia with a primary focus on wood and metal working.
Just like it’s male counterpart, the WSFG will be a community-based, non-profit organisation that will provide a safe and inclusive space for women to work on projects, along with offering a place for friendship, company, and an allround enjoyable time. And to clear The Women’s Shed at Ferny Grove Steering Committee. Pictured from left to up any confusion—no, this is not right are: Shan Fleming, Allison Brown,Carleen Fitzsimon, Donna Confetti, Elaine a thinly-veiled arts, crafts, and Newrick, Denise Donohoe, Franschesca Ingram knitting group! Members of the Women’s Shed can expect the full Men’s Shed experience, with woodworking practices and power tool use at their command. For centuries, household handy work was typically a job assigned to the man of the house. However, in our modern world where many women are living independently and often outliving their partners, skills honed in Women’s Sheds around Australia are becoming increasingly useful. The need for this movement in our community could not be greater. At the suggestion of Brisbane Tramway Museum Honorary Secretary, Don Willsher, an Expression of Interest meeting was held at The Brisbane Tramway Museum in early March. WSFG Steering Committee Chair, Shan Fleming said the response from the initial session was overwhelming - clearly indicating a communal desire for this facility. ‘The group was blown away by the numbers that turned up with almost 100 women across all age groups showing up or emailing to express their interest. At this stage we are working through how to accommodate as many as we can from those who signed up on the day, which is a nice problem to have,’ said Shan. What is also really exciting about the establishment of the WSFG is that it will be the first Women’s Shed of its kind to ever grace Brisbane ! The closest one is in Logan, and its founding members made the effort of attending the Expression of Interest session to share their positive experiences and learnings. Now, with a WSFG Steering Committee formed, and weekly meetings taking place to secure insurances and complete administrative duties, the organisation is well on its way to opening its doors. It is hoped that workshops will commence by mid/end April at The Brisbane Tramway Museum, Ferny Grove. Just like at the Men’s Shed, members will pay an annual membership and session fee to help cover costs and will need to bring PPE (Personal Protective Equipment). Sessions are anticipated to be held on Wednesdays and Thursdays however, numbers for each session are strictly capped to 12 for safety reasons so if you are interested in joining the group, get in touch with them ASAP to join the waitlist on theshedatfernygrove@outlook.com. So, women of Brisbane, what are you waiting for? Come on down and get your hands dirty!

These ladies are enjoying a great game of golf once again,
This time last year the Keperra Country Golf Club was holding daily meetings with its committee and leadership team to determine how it would remain open as COVID-19 began to take hold in Australia.
Over a period of three weeks, the club bounced between being open and shut, in line with the Queensland Government guidelines. Michael Dash, Keperra Golf Club’s Marketing, Membership & Partnership Manager, explains that management were doing everything within their power to keep the club open, along with keeping everyone safe. ‘We were learning new information hourly and trying to pivot as best as we could, to not only get our members a game, but allow our staff to simply come to work in order to mow the grass! Golf Courses are a funny thing; they can get out of control if not manicured regularly,’ said Mr Dash. Thankfully, this period of uncertainty was relatively short-lived and after a few cautious months, the game of golf experienced a resurgence - an extreme resurgence at that. The final tally of golf rounds for 2020 at Keperra Golf Club cumulated at a mammoth 90,000 rounds, even with COVID-19 being an ever present factor in the marketplace. Now membership that tops at 1300+ have all but closed. ‘Demand has been high and the golf course has been incredibly busy. Our Junior program, the Keperra Eagles grew too along with Ladies Lets Golf program, its fair to say Men aged 4564 are behind the majority of the spike in demand, and the increased chatter on our social media channels is testament to that,’ said Gavin Lawrence, General Manager. However, it wasn’t just members and social golfers visiting the club - corporate clients - new and existing- were at the club in the masses. ‘We welcomed a lot of new clients to Keperra Golf Club and had a difficult time managing our existing clients against our new ones. It was obvious the corporate world saw golf as a safe way to entertain clients. 2021’s calendar is already pretty much full. It’s a really great time for our club,’ stated Mr Lawrence. Nevertheless, a game of golf looks slightly different than it used to. Staff were busy last year re-educating members on the ‘do’s and don’t’s’ of what a ‘COVID Safe’ game of golf now looked like. It was a learning curve for many, but one which everyone got on board with very quickly. ‘At the end of the day, we (and the guests) all had the same objectives - enjoy a game of golf, do it while being Covid Safe, go home – pretty simply really,’ said Mr Dash. The club welcomes golfers of all skill levels, young and old. You can find this 27 hole championship course at 44 Duggan Street , Keperra.

Knitting for those in Need Appeal for donations of knitting yarn
Every Thursday afternoon members of the Purls Knitting Group at Mitchelton gather to make items for those in great need.
The group is affiliated to Knitting for Brisbane’s Needy, which was started in 2006 by Karen and Peter Croke from the Glasshouse Mountains. The duo see that the handmade blankets, toys and garments reach those in most need particularly in the Queensland area but also interstate and overseas. In order for this busy group to continue making blankets, toys and garments, supplies are always required. The group accepts donations of wool, yarn, fabric, patterns and needles. Readymade knitting and sewing from the public are also gratefully accepted. However, second-hand items cannot be accepted. Pick up of your excess yarn can be arranged, so why not use this opportunity to clear out a few cupboards?! Please leave any requests and details at the Mitchelton Library so someone from the group can get back to you as soon as possible. Normally regular weekly meetings are at Mitchelton Library on Thursdays from 1pm – 3pm. However, with number restrictions currently at the library, the group meet at the Gaythorne RSL on Thursdays from 2.30pm – 4.30pm. Donations can be brought to the meeting on Thursday, but the RSL cannot accept donations at any other times. New members are always made very welcome so pop along and for afternoon tea or just call in to have a chat. If you can assist in any way, donations may be left at the Mitchelton Library. Please leave your contact details too so the group can thank you for your generosity.

CRUcial Conversations This limited-edition series features five stories of grassroots leadership by people in the disability sector in Queensland. These stories of change show us what it means to be a leader and what it takes to create real and meaningful change in the lives of people living with disability. These stories are deeply personal, compelling and insightful. 2. One in Five Put together by The University of Melbourne’s Melbourne Disability Institute, One in Five explores some of the most complex issues facing the 20% of Australians who live with disability. Launched in December 2019, the podcast gives voice to people with disability and asks about their experiences with everything from employment, housing and the law to supporting families and early intervention. Guests, including those living with disability, researchers and people working in the sector, tackle hot-button topics. These range from informed decision making and ethics in the context of mental health legislation to investigating what is best practice early intervention.

We’ve Got This: Parenting with a Disability Packed with fascinating stories, this podcast aims to share stories which provide an accurate representation of family life and the complexities that parenting with disability brings. The idea for a podcast of this nature came about when producer Eliza Hull, who has a neurological condition called Charcot Marie Tooth, was pregnant with her daughter and felt unrepresented in every one of the countless parenting books. The series explores the issues that parenting with a disability brings, whilst also challenging the stigmas and stereotypes. Guests cover a range of issues including topics such as parenting with an intellectual disability, forced hysterectomies, acquiring a disability and parenting later in life.

A guide to educational facilities in Everton Park and surrounding suburbs
Mt Maria College embraces the 90’s with ‘The Wedding Singer’
Mt Maria College was transported back to the 90’s in March as students performed the smash-hit Broadway musical ‘The Wedding Singer’ to the local community over two sold-out performances.
‘The Wedding Singer’ musical is based on the 90s film of the same name and follows Robbie, who sings at weddings, his failed relationship with his former fiancée, and his romance with a new love, Julia. Rehearsals for ‘The Wedding Singer’ began way back in 2019, with original plans to stage the production in 2020 brought to a halt by the Covid-19 pandemic. The musical’s Executive Producer and College Cultural Leader, Mrs Yvonne Carr, said that the production’s success is a testament to the amazing students and staff involved. ‘Our cast and crew have worked so hard and long to make this happen, who would have imagined that a Musical chosen and auditioned in Term 3 2019 would be showing in March 2021,’ Mrs Carr said.

For example: disfigured human forms and ghostly-like characters (mostly in charcoal). In these works, I attempt to represent stages of both inner and outer being. I am fascinated by apparitions, strange miraculous circumstances and the subconscious.’ Last year Lola was one of ten artists accepted for the Art on the Fences Project, organised by Hands on Art. The artwork submitted by Lola was selected as it signified vibrancy, conversation and creativity. This was the first paid opportunity for Lola, and her artwork was displayed at Little Birds Books in Paddington. Lola has achieved great success during her schooling at Mitchelton State High School, and her success will continue throughout this exciting new journey at the National Art School in Sydney.

Developing resilience through adventurous play
Does your children like to hang upside down, spin around and swing back and forth really fast and climb on everything?
These play impulses are actually essential for the development of balance, coordination, spatial awareness as well as hearing and vision. At Enoggera’s Tiny Town Child Care and Kindergarten, the team of experienced educators incorporate these types of activities into the daily curriculum. Research suggests children are spending less and less time being physically active and taking risks in their play and this can be detrimental a child’s ability to self-regulate, persevere and overcome difficulty. Tiny Town’s curriculum actively promotes ‘adventurous play’. This is a philosophy that embraces the benefits of positive risk-taking and providing children with opportunities to engage in risk-assessment including climbing, constructing, balancing, swinging and sensory experiences, all supported by the ingenuity of the teaching staff and a custom-designed playground. Adventurous play has benefits for balance, coordination, sensory perception and gross and fine motor skills. Positive risk-taking also has enormous flow-on effects to resilience, perseverance and self-belief. Children challenge their own limits, take considered risks and learn to assess those risks while maintaining their own and other’s safety. Development of these qualities has been shown to be a strong predictor of future success in formal schooling and beyond. Tiny Town is committed to nurturing children’s holistic development. Through playbased programs, children actively seek out answers to their own questions, follow their own interests and test their own capabilities, resulting in learning that is authentic, rich, unmatched, and everlasting. Tiny Town is a not-for-profit community driven service, delivering quality researchdriven programs for children since 1974, and currently has vacancies for 2-5-year-olds. The centre delivers a fiveday Government Approved Kindergarten Program, taught by a qualified and highly experienced Kindergarten Teacher. Prospective families are encouraged to book an appointment to explore the centre on 3355 9465 or email info@tinytown.com.au Page 18 - April 2021, The Everton Echo

Celebrating a Centenary in Service
It’s a special time for Rotary in Australia and NZ as this wonderful organisation gears up to celebrate their first 100 years of service on the 21st April 2021.
In 1921, four Rotary Clubs were created in Melbourne, Auckland, Wellington and Sydney. From there, Rotary and Rotaract clubs were created everywhere across Australia and NZ, including at our local branch, The Rotary Club of Mitchelton. The Mitchelton Rotary Club was first chartered on the 10th April 1967. After 54 years of serving our community, the club continues to accomplish remarkable feats through their numerous projects within the local area. As part of the Rotary centenary celebrations each club is contributing a story regarding the most significant project they have worked on for the community during their club's inception. For the Mitchelton branch, their story is about a joint project with the Enoggera Lions Club to build the Senior Citizens Centre at Mitchelton. Here is the history......
A project built from the heart - construction of the Senior Citizens Club
The organisation known as Mitchelton Meals on Wheels consisted of volunteers from various church communities and members of the Rotary Club of Mitchelton and the Lions Club of Enoggera. The kitchen operated from a building owned by Mobil Oil, Australia. The start of the facility was before 1967. All the helpers were friends of reasonable duration and were carrying out their duties under less than reasonable conditions. The Rotary and Lions members suggested to their clubs that the provision of Volunteers at work in the construction of the building a building with suitable
Rotary isn’t just a club to join, but rather an invitation to endless opportunities, it’s amazing what we can accomplish when hearts and minds work together.

The Senior Citizens Club under construction facilities for preparing meals and distributing them to those in need would be a worthwhile project for combined club participation. During discussions it became apparent that a facility to engage the elderly in their idle moments was missing from the area. The decision was made to build a Meals on Wheels kitchen and a Senior Citizens club in the heart of the area and that the Lions and Rotary clubs would raffle a motor vehicle to raise funds. The raffle prize was advertised in the local papers and in every way that was available. The order for tickets was processed at each clubs premises and tickets were delivered to the patrons by club members. This method of delivery not only afforded the patron to know all about the Clubs, but enabled the Clubs to gain new members. The Mitchelton Youth Club agreed to a portion of its lease from the Brisbane City Council to be altered to provide for space for the new Senior Citizens Club and Meals on Wheels Kitchen in Tel-el-Kebir Street, Mitchelton. The result of years of hard work and worry by the members of the clubs and supporters started to appear in the latter part of 1975 as building of the Centre took shape. Opening of the centre was performed by the Honorable J.W. Greenwood, BA, LLB, MLA (Qld) on Saturday 23rd October, 1976 in the presence of an enormous crowd of well-wishers and supporters.

Discover your British Ancestors
Monthly news from The Queensland Family History Society
Have you heard of the UK’s 1939 Register? The Register is an amazing document that offers insight and leads when tracking down British (incl. England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Island) ancestors.
On the 3rd September 1939, England declared war with Germany. The Register was taken on the 29th September (26 days after war was declared) and was used to produce identity cards and then facilitated the issuing of rations books. The document was then not updated until 1991 and used by the National Health Service. The 1939 Register and the UK Census’s can be accessed by members of the Queensland Family History Society online from subscription databases. The Queensland Family History Society are holding some great webinars this May, which include; Convicts at Moreton Bay: Beyond the Chronological Register of Prisoners
Moreton Bay was a formidable place of secondary punishment where convicts were re-transported from 1824 to 1839 after committing a second (or third) offence in New South Wales. Most were returned to Sydney after their sentence, but others chose to stay when the penal settlement closed in 1839.
Bringing your ancestors to life: triumphs and trials of publishing a family history
Have you ever wanted to write a family history book? Maybe you are already in the process of writing.
The society is open to all, so why not visit them at 58 Bellevue Avenue, Gaythorne or visit their website at www.qfhs.org. au and see what they can offer you in your search for your family history?

New Mouth-Watering Touch to Local Bowls Club
A review of the Everton Park Bowls and Community Club’s catering service, Moreton Bay Kitchen. By our writer, Georgia Wright. Moroccan chicken tagine with jewelled couscous salad, slow roasted beef cheeks with mashed potato and shiraz gravy, and beer battered cod with tartare sauce and chips—these are just three of the many spectacular meals up Suzie Mills sleeves. And boy, is Everton Park Bowls and Community Club lucky to have her business, Moreton Bay Kitchen: Catering, on board! A former publisher for The National Gallery in London, Suzie’s later decision to find success Georgia (right) enjoying the delicious in the chef industry not only shocked the world, delights by Moreton Bay Kitchen but also knocked everyone’s socks off. She kickstarted her career—and fine-tuned her now impeccable skillsets—at Leith’s School of Food and Wine, where she undertook a rigorous one-year course. This led Suzie to open the doors of her own restaurant in Dorset, but she has since closed those doors in order for her to pursue her career on Australian shores. Now, not only does Suzie whip up a mean family dinner behind the Bowls Club’s counter, but she also pours her twenty years of experience into high end catering and standard catering services, a delivery service, and events catering services—for hiring dancers and entertainment, etc. A very flexible chef indeed! Her menu at this bistro changes frequently, as confirmed by Suzie, depending on what sort of “foody vibe” she is feeling each week, but her much-loved repertoire is often described as “rustic cosmopolitan”. She also makes a conscious effort for her weekly menus to have synergy with her delivery service. All that being said, Suzie Mills, international and award-winning chef, certainly knows how to make your experience one to remember. Whether it’s a wedding, a work function, or simply a family breakfast, lunch or dinner outing, Suzie will ensure you leave with a smile on your face and a happy food baby beneath your belt! What are we waiting for, Brisbane locals? Come on down to the Everton Park Bowls and Community Club to get amongst the action! The Everton Park Bowls and Community Club is located at 7 Gearside Street, Everton Park. The Moreton Bay Kitchen operates on Fridays from 5.30pm to 8pm. To make a booking, call or text 0434 963 249. Weekly menus are available to view on www.moretonbaykitchen.com.au. Takeaway and catering also available.

The Love of Lapidary appeals to all ages
News from The Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club,
Again this year many Gem Shows held by various Gem Clubs around the Brisbane area have been cancelled due to COVID-19 and associated regulations.
However, there is a Gem show in the coming weeks at the Kingaroy Showgrounds on 10th and 11th of April. For further information call 0491 606 427. Members of the club recently held a display at the Arana Hills Library which was well received. The Library staff have invited the club to hold a display again next year due to the strong interest from the public. There were a variety of Gems and minerals on display in three of the Library’s cabinets. Young people were fascinated by the fossils on display whilst the older people were more interested in the cut and polished stones. There are many aspects relating to the hobby. You can specialise in one area or try and spread your interest across many fields. Some of the areas are; fossicking, collecting minerals and fossils, polishing and cabbing gemstone material, faceting of precious stones, micro-mounting, (which is collecting and displaying of small mineral specimens etc.), silverwork and setting your own stones, or just collecting gemstone specimens. The Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club has its clubrooms located at 46 Ferneydell Street, Ashgrove and is open every Thursday from 9am to noon for cutting and polishing rocks and from noon to 3pm for silverwork. It is also open on Saturday from 1pm to 4pm. The club caters for Gemstone enthusiasts in the North Western area of Brisbane. If you feel this type of hobby interests you, do not hesitate to get in touch with either John (3351 1038) or Lloyd (3351 2093) who will be only too happy to have a chat to you about the workings of the club. For further information visit the club’s website at www. mitcheltondistrictsgemclub.wordpress.com. Or keep up to date with them on social media, search ‘Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club Inc.’ on Facebook to find them.

GET SOCIAL WITH THE EVERTON ECHO! evertonechonews Page 24 - April 2021, The Everton Echo
Welcome to ‘Grab that Grant’, a monthly column brought to you by local grants guru, Carolyn McCall. Carolyn is the founder of the Little Project Management Company, and has a wealth of knowledge into the industry. This month Carolyn chats about the benefits that social media can bring to your organisation
Why your organisation should get more social
How can you share your message so that it cuts above all the noise?
This is the question that I asked Claire Bennett from Margin Media, my collaborator in community change projects and my go-to for social media strategies for non-profits and organisations that do good. So many organisations deliver amazing programs; they have the right people, with the right skills, doing all the right things. Yet organisations sometimes forget to share their journey with others – and the community misses out on important insights, learnings and messages. It is a good idea to include communication, such as social media, as a component in your program design. Clear communication helps people in the community engage with your program. Claire talked to me about some of the things that she considers when she is developing a social media strategy. She is a strong believer in creating emotional connection. To do this, you really need to know your customer and provide them something of value – on something that they are passionate about. In short, it can’t be about you personally, but about how you can help them. Through your content, you also need to bring people along on a journey with you. This will require more time and effort than simply posting random content each day—you need to be clear about the key messages you want to convey and map out a pathway to share them with the world. There might only be a couple of key messages that you have each month, and all your posts should link back to these. And finally, giving people the call to action that is transparent and clear. This is what ethical social media is all about – giving people the choice through being direct and truthful with your messaging. Social media, if used in the right way, can lead to empowerment, transparency, and the sharing of knowledge with a larger community of like-minded people to create positive change. A good social media campaign can reach more people outside of your immediate circle and create a ripple effect in the world – which is the impact that we all want. If you want to hear more from Claire, you can find her through marginmedia.com.au. Otherwise, if you would like to sit down for a coffee with me – send me an email on carolyn@lpmcompany.com.au. I would love to hear from you. www.echo-news.com.au

Honourable VIEW club member gets noticed The Newmarket View Club was delighted to discover that one of their dedicated members, Pam McGahey had been nominated for the 2021 Australian of The Year Award.
Pam has been a member of the club for seven years and has been a valuable asset on their committee. For some years, she acted as Assistant Secretary, Pam McGahey with the responsibility of organising nominee for the 2021 Australian of guest speakers and entertainers during The Year Award. that time. Pam was nominated for 2021 Australian of the Year Awards for her contribution to Early Childhood Education spanning close to 40 years. In that time she has acted as a Kindergarten, State School, Kindergarten Union (S.A.) and EC Teacher. In addition, via her membership on numerous committees, she has addressed
the EC Curriculum for Children and Adults (through T.A.F.E. and QUT Courses). She worked closely with QUT to ensure T.A.F.E. Diploma Students continued to be eligible for 12 months credit towards a Teaching Degree. Despite the challenges of last year, members have been using raffles and donations to raise funds to continue to support the six students the club is following in The Smith Family’s Learning for Life Program, by sponsoring their school activities. Meet the Women behind the Nest
Did you know that The Nest Community has facilitated over 700 workshops in the past 6 years for the local area? This month we are introducing you to three of the amazing women that share their knowledge and skills in these workshops.
Sarah Dally
“Everyone is different and has a preferred learning style so I’m careful to describe every action aloud as I demonstrate a skill. Usually, I do it twice, then we do it together.” She completed some basic art courses and finds the principles & elements of design, learned while training as a florist, help her workshops, as well as in her Retro clothing business. Following a workshop with Lynne at The Nest, crochet has now become her favourite craft. Working with a wide range of recycled materials, she introduces people to Felt-making, Rag Rugs, Treasure & Trinket pouches, Button Canvas Art, Giant Crochet, Dream Catchers, and Wind-Chimes. Sarah says she is often inspired by how others learn and adapt her process. She’s amazed by their finished work and loves hearing later that they too are now hooked on sustainable craftwork.
Carol Lapworth
“When people turn up with an idea of what they really want to sew, I see their sense of achievement when it’s done and get as much pleasure seeing them sewing as they do. It’s also good to feel I’m passing these skills onto younger generations.” Carol is one of the ladies who teaches ‘Learn to Sew’ classes and Quilting lessons here at The Nest. Sewing has always drawn her in. A neighbour taught her to hand sew when she was just 4. Carol never stopped improving her skills, eventually teaching high school Home Economics and tutoring at University. She remembers a long holiday in a small town in Colorado where her daughter was living at the time. It had 6 fabric stores! Carol and her daughter enjoyed several quilters’ workshops during her stay. As a workshop facilitator, she believes in encouraging people to know what they really want to make and recalls a father of three who wanted to save money on their clothes and learnt to mend his kids’ jeans through The Nest’s workshops.
Mary Brady
Mary loves experimenting with textiles, stitching, dyeing, quilting and more. During her travels to the Middle East, India and Bali, she attended different workshops to learn more techniques with the unique textiles and crafts from those regions. A career in Early Learning and Special Education shows in Mary’s hands-on approach to craftwork. She encourages playing with possibilities and remembers one little student struggling to weave a scarf. Lou showed her different ways to remember – helping her read instructions or make a drawing, as well as a little singing on the side. She never forgot how thrilled that kid was with her success! As a child, Mary’s own forays into painting, cooking, embroidery and sewing were often entered in her hometown’s annual show. Ever looking for new ideas, Mary is known to get up really close to art works, be they quilts or motor-cycles. She says friends often burst into fits of laughter when she’s caught red-handed - getting too close or even touching the exhibits!

New facilities coming on-line at Mitchie High
Mitchie State High students are getting into coding as their new lab comes online and are enjoying the full functionality of the brand-new resource centre which opened to students last month. Last year the Palaszczuk Government began construction on the $12 million investment into the school, which will serve generations of students to come. In addition to the coding lab and resource centre, the upgrade included full covering of the double basketball courts, a new canteen, and a refurbishment to the aging school hall.
