A Marathon With A Purpose
Chris Healy, an Everton Park local, recently completed a marathon with a twist. Inspired by adventurer Beau Miles, Chris embarked on a unique challenge: running one mile every hour for 24 hours. But it didn’t stop there. During his downtime between miles, Chris decluttered his home, gathering items to donate to the Salvos store in Mitchelton. Through this blend of fitness, decluttering, and community spirit, Chris discovered the power of mindfulness and minimalism. His challenge not only improved his wellbeing but also made a positive impact close to home. Well done Chris!

Copper thefts continue to hurt the Moreton Bay community
By Shane Steele
So extreme was the theft of copper and other metals from locations across Queensland, the State Government referred it to undergo a Parliamentary Inquiry in August 2023.
Over 12 months later, and especially within the Moreton Bay region, this issue has only escalated, with thieves undeterred by any reforms proposed by the Queensland Government.
In July 2024, Echo News reported Samford Rangers FC had been the victim of thieves stealing copper from electrical pits connected to field lighting, rendering the fields inoperable for night games and training for an extended period.
It is a situation that is widespread and only worsening.
Energy Queensland (EQ) reported since 2017-18, there has been over 500 incidents of copper theft on Queensland’s electricity networks. The number of copper theft incidents increased from 40 in 2017-18, to a total of 170 incidents in 2022-23 – an increase of over 325 per cent.
Currently, there is on average, one copper theft incident every two days across Queensland’s electricity networks.
Queensland Government identified copper, along with aluminium and galvanised steel, was being stolen at sport and recreation facilities also from typical items such as air-conditioning compressor lines, water lines and treads. Consequentially, the lives and safety of the public can be at risk from being inadvertently exposed to live electricity from thieves damaging cables and equipment.
Hardly conspicuous, the Queensland Police Service flagged thieves occasionally dress in hi-vis clothing to give the appearance of being a tradie. They may even set out orange traffic cones to stage it as a worksite. This growing criminal activity has been heavily concentrated in the Moreton Bay region over the past several years, whereby local sporting clubs are targeted by thieves illegally harvesting copper and other metals. It is then resold into the local scrap metal market or exported.
The City of Moreton Bay reported a ‘spike in copper thefts at project sites, like sporting field upgrades and street lighting projects.’ Examples of this included over 320 metres of copper
cable stolen from the Narangba Demons Baseball Club in April 2023. The Narangba Eagles FC had copper cabling stolen from its fields three times within the span of six months in 2022.
Mr Jamie Bowman, Vice President of Mitchelton FC, reported an astounding three kilometres of copper wiring was stolen from their sporting fields in 2023. The cost of its replacement was estimated at over $100,000.
The grounds of Northside Christian FC – located at Darien Street Park in Bridgeman Downs – was targeted four times in one month. In total, five kilometres of copper wiring was taken from these fields, costing approximately $80,000.
‘It’s really disappointing,’ said Northside Christian FC President, Mr Sergio Giavon. ‘I just don’t know what goes through these people’s heads. They’re just criminals. It’s organised crime. They just go from [electrical] pit to pit, snap-snip, take it out, roll it up and go.’
EQ conservatively estimates copper theft costs them more than $4.5 million per year. This is only the immediate repair cost. This excludes the cost to business customers, delays to their program of work, delays to new customer connections, as well as the inconvenience to residential customers impacted by electricity supply disruptions and blackouts.
Similarly, this does not include costs incurred by sporting and community associations when copper is stolen “behind the meter.”
Costs that are ultimately passed on to the customer.
Not only are the cost of these robberies reflected in rising energy bills for everyone; for members of impacted sporting clubs, especially the parents of junior members, they also face increasing registration fees to cover additional expenses for insurances, repairs to infrastructure and preventative measures including installation of security cameras.
Mr Bowman said that registration fees at Mitchelton FC had increased this past year by approximately 12 per cent.
‘Fees went up by $65, from last year to this year. It’s a burden on parents. If you have three kids, and parents want them all at the same club, it’s a lot of money.’
In a time when individuals and families are struggling with increasing cost of living pressures, more severe cuts are being considered to find savings.
A recent report by UNICEF Austraila highlighted more than half of Australian families are making sacrifices in their household budgets, including parents occasionally going without meals, or simply taking their children out of sports, due to rising costs.
Vice President of Mitchelton FC Jamie and Referee‘s Coordinator Luke Treacy are fed up with copper theft from field lights, costing the club over $100K.

Copper thefts continue to hurt the Moreton Bay community
Continued from page 6.
Mr Bowman agreed, highlighting club membership had been impacted.
‘It is the kids, mums, and dads that this affects the most when these types of things happen.’
In his submission to the Parliamentary Inquiry, Cr Peter Flannery, Mayor for the City of Moreton Bay, acknowledged the financial pressures on local sporting clubs, as well as schools and other community organisations, victimised by copper theft.
He went on to say, ‘Evidence suggests the growth of copper theft is driven primarily by the limited regulatory requirements for scrap metal industry recycling (i.e. use of cash for transactions), the relative ease in theft due to copper accessibility (e.g. sports field lighting) and escalating metal prices.
‘A legislative response is required to limit this form of criminal activity, which can be achieved through similar approaches undertaken in other jurisdictions.’
Mayor Flannery highlighted that in New South Wales, they experienced declining copper thefts resulting from changes to their laws. Amendments included requiring scrap metal traders to be registered, prohibiting cash payments for scrap metal, forcing traders to record all transactions and recording the details of the person selling the scrap metal so police can track them if necessary.
At the time of the Inquiry, Mayor Flannery said, ‘Queensland is the only state on the eastern seaboard that does not have these measures in place.’
His submission recommended the State Government be called on to update all relevant legislation, including the Second-hand Dealers and Pawnbrokers Act 2003, to mitigate the rise of copper theft in Queensland.
The Parliamentary Committee agreed, with this recommendation included in their final report that was published November 2023. This report also recommended the Queensland Government investigate and determine the most effective approach to strengthening laws, citing the model adopted by New South Wales.
With the Queensland Government handing down their response to the Committee’s report on 24 May 2024, they noted their in-principle support, confirming their commitment to further explore this.
When the Queensland Government was asked by Echo News to report on the status of these efforts in August 2024, they reported this work was progressing and would, ‘require detailed consideration and may include stakeholder consultation. The timing of any future legislative reforms will be subject to the outcomes of our investigation into legislative frameworks and the government’s decision on a preferred approach.’
In the interim, club officials could only repeat the sentiments expressed by the Queensland Attorney-General back in May, when she said, ‘I strongly encourage anyone with information about criminals stealing copper or other metals to contact Queensland Police.’
Mr Bowman acknowledged the responsive and professional service Mitchelton FC received from the Queensland Police, including their surveillance.
‘We have a really good rapport with the local police service at Ferny Grove. They are always driving through the carpark, making their presence known, which has been bolstered since this has happened.’
Despite the combined efforts of the State and Local Governments, the Queensland Police, EQ and the community, copper theft remains rife.
The City of Moreton Bay already has in place extensive grant and funding programs to help sporting and community organisations upgrade their facilities, including for improvements to security and surveillance systems. However, they do not believe this is enough, with Mayor Flannery stating, ‘In the lead up to the State election in October, we will be prosecuting our case loud and clear for our fair share.’
A commitment he is calling on from any elected government is more safety in Moreton Bay through further investment in technologies, such as Licence Plate Recognition and CCTV, to help reduce crime and improve confidence across the community.
Mayor Flannery said, ‘City of Moreton Bay has led the “no cash for scrap” law related to copper theft which is increasing at an alarming rate, placing a strain on local sporting clubs and organisations for repair costs.
‘We are calling for a frank discussion with all political parties to ensure City of Moreton Bay matters and the voices of our community are heard.’

Local Young Woman Challenges Perceptions
Natascha, a young woman from Stafford, is raising awareness about Functional Neurological Disorder (FND), a condition often misdiagnosed as epilepsy, multiple sclerosis (MS), or generalised anxiety disorder.
Living with FND presents daily challenges, but Natascha has transformed her experiences into advocacy. FND affects the nervous system and disrupts how the brain and body send signals, causing symptoms like seizures, paralysis, and speech difficulties. Misdiagnoses are common, often leading to delayed treatment. ‘Many people with FND are told it’s all in their head,’ Natascha says, pointing out the stigma surrounding the condition.
Her journey to diagnosis was long and frustrating, marked by misdiagnoses of epilepsy and suspected MS. After years of uncertainty, she was finally diagnosed with FND, offering some relief. Now, Natascha is dedicated to educating others and challenging stereotypes.
FND is hard to diagnose because it doesn’t appear on standard neurological tests like MRIs. Natascha advocates for more understanding, emphasizing that the absence of results doesn’t mean the condition isn’t real. She also highlights the frequent misdiagnosis of women, whose symptoms are often dismissed as psychological or stress-related.
Natascha's mission is to promote early diagnosis and proper treatment for FND. She believes raising awareness will help medical professionals recognize the disorder sooner, improving outcomes for patients.
Her advocacy efforts include sharing her story on social media, speaking at events, and supporting FND awareness groups. Natascha hopes her work will lead to better recognition of FND and more compassionate care for those affected by it. Her story serves as a reminder of the resilience needed to navigate life with a misunderstood condition.
Drive Safe, It Could Save a Life
The notorious Queens Road roundabout where the accident occurred
Following a car crash at the notorious Queens Road roundabout in Everton Hills, Everton Park resident Karl Brand is calling on motorists to exercise greater caution on the roads. After sustaining life-changing injuries, Karl’s plea is particularly timely, as Queensland Road Safety Week took place last month. His message is simple: drive with care.
Karl Brand, a 40-year-old plasterer, was waiting at the Queens Road roundabout when his vehicle was struck from behind by a P-plate driver towing a trailer. The seemingly minor accident has had catastrophic consequences for Brand, leaving him with severe neck injuries that have drastically impacted his quality of life.
‘What seemed like a simple rear-end collision has turned my life upside down,’ Brand said. His injuries affect his left shoulder, arm, and hand, causing him constant pain and preventing him from engaging in activities he once enjoyed with his young children.
‘Before the crash, I could do everything with my boys—jump on the trampoline, ride bikes, take walks to the park. Now, even the simplest tasks, like showering or driving, are excruciating,’ he explained. ‘Every movement hurts. The pain is relentless.’
Brand’s story is not unique, according to Carla Melbourne, Legal Practice Manager at Shine Lawyers, who is representing Brand.
‘Every day, I meet with people who are on the verge of tears because of the aftermath of a motor vehicle accident,’ Melbourne said. ‘The reality is, there’s no such thing as a minor accident. Every crash has the potential to cause significant, ongoing trauma.’
Karl’s message to drivers is clear: ‘Drive safe. Take caution. Take the extra time, because it’s not just your life that could be at risk—you could completely destroy somebody else’s.’

The first school in the area was the Enoggera State School opened in 1871. The original school room was turned over to the School of Arts committee in 1916 and in 1925 the old school was dismantled, and re erected as an integral part of the Memorial Hall on the corner of Samford Rd and Wardell St. The new building continued as a place of further education, relaxation and entertainment with the Enoggera sub-branch of the R.S.S.A.I.L co-tenants. After WWll a group of returned service men opened a new sub-branch in an old hall at Mitchelton. [The Enoggera hall had always been non-alcoholic]. In time a new building was erected facing Samford Rd, and although situated in Mitchelton it was named the Gaythorne R.S.L. and is now known as The G. The Enoggera Hall remains the venue for many functions and community groups. Two, 2025 functions are in the planning – “Stump Capping” in early July and Re dedication in late November. Watch for further details.
Monthly Meet-Ups with Expert Guest Speakers
Stella, a brown belt in karate, competed in three events: Team Kumite (points sparring), Individual Kata (a performance of karate movement sequences), and Individual Kumite. While she didn’t take home a medal, the young athlete was proud of her performance and thrilled to cheer for her teammates from the sidelines.
‘It was an amazing experience,’ Stella said. ‘Even though I didn‘t medal, I was really happy with how I performed, and it was exciting to support my teammates throughout the competition.’

Over the past few months, I had the pleasure of showing student leaders from our local schools around Parliament on a personal tour. This is a fantastic tradition we have amongst our school communities, and as always, it’s a great day out. It's always a pleasure to chat with the students about their ambitions and concerns and it's refreshing to hear the younger generation's perspective on today's issues.
Stella’s journey into karate began unexpectedly. ‘I first started because I had to sit and watch my brother for an hour and a half each week at karate,’ she shared. ‘The Sensei suggested I try it. Ironically, my brother quit after a while, but I continued!’ Her passion for the sport has only grown, with the goal of achieving black belt status in the next two years. ‘I love setting goals, challenging myself, and improving my skills as I progress through the grades,’ Stella said. She also expressed a desire to teach karate in the future, aiming to pass on her knowledge and love for the sport to others.
Currently, she trains three nights a week locally and participates in weekly state team practice on Brisbane’s southside as part of the Queensland State Team.
As Stella continues to hone her skills, she remains an inspiring example of dedication and perseverance, both on and off the karate mat.

North West Private Hospital unveils new surgical robot
Brisbane’s north is now home to new state-of-theart robotic technology, with North West Private Hospital unveiling a surgical robot for use during knee replacement surgery.
Michelle Hogan, a 56-year-old hairdresser was the first to benefit from the device, undergoing a knee replacement after suffering from pain for more than three years. Ms Hogan had been forced to reduce her work hours and stop exercising due to constant pain, which had not responded to conservative measures such as anti-inflammatories, physiotherapy and injections.
Dr Mark Dekkers performed Ms Hogan’s knee replacement utilising the new Velys device.
‘The addition of robotics is a game changer in total knee replacement surgery,’ Dr Dekkers said.
‘The Velys robot is designed to allow surgeons to precisely preform a total knee replacement and accurately balance soft tissue which can enhance a more pain free and quicker recovery and can also reduce operating time.’
Equipped with advanced cameras and optical trackers, the new robot assists surgeons by gathering patient anatomy data in real time. The robot is designed to aid the surgeon as they plan for and execute precise procedures tailored to a patient’s specific anatomy.
North West Private Hospital CEO, Kelly Grant, said ‘We’re excited to introduce this new surgical robot to North West Private Hospital. We’re committed to offering patients leading surgical technology that’s designed to improve patient experience and outcomes.’

Alongside Jenny Henderson, a fellow OWNQ member, Karen spent the night sleeping in her car to raise awareness and funds for older women facing homelessness. Together, they raised $4,074 to support this crucial cause.
The Forgotten Women Project is dedicated to addressing the alarming rise in homelessness among women over 55, a group that is the fastest-growing demographic experiencing housing insecurity in Australia. Recent statistics reveal that more than 240,000 women in this age group are at risk of homelessness due to a range of unforeseen circumstances, including relationship breakdowns, health crises, and inadequate retirement savings. Many of these women, having spent years caring for others, find themselves with limited financial security and few housing options in later life.
‘Despite spending the night in a secure environment with other participants, climbing into the back seat of my small car for the evening was a very confronting experience. I cannot imagine what it would be like to live like that every night.’
The $4,074 raised by Karen and Jenny will go directly to supporting the Forgotten Women Project‘s initiatives, which include emergency housing, support services, and advocacy efforts aimed at ensuring that no older woman has to face homelessness alone.
Sizzling Snags For The Girls
Rosalie is just one of the many recipients of the Days for Girls menstrual kits
In celebration of the International Day of the Girl on the 11th October, Days for Girls Brisbane Northside Team is conducting a Sausage Sizzle at Bunnings Stafford Store on Saturday 12th October. The theme for the day is ‘Cook for the Girls’.
Funds raised from this day will assist team volunteers to purchase fabric and components to continue to sew and pack menstrual kits to be shipped to women and girls in developing countries. Supply of these kits enables girls to continue to attend school during their periods, thus enabling them to complete their education and contribute to their local community. To date in 2024 the team has shipped 500 kits to PNG, Timor Leste and Somalia.
In addition, the team members are conducting a multi-prize raffle and the prizes will be drawn at 3pm on the day at Bunnings Stafford Store.

Celebrating 15 Years Repairing & Reusing
On Saturday, 19th October, the International Repair Café movement will mark its 15th anniversary, celebrating a global initiative that promotes sustainability, community, and the art of repair.
With over 3,000 Repair Cafés worldwide, these grassroots hubs help people save money, reduce waste, and foster community connections by sharing repair knowledge and skills.
To commemorate the milestone, Repair Cafés across the globe have been invited to create a bunting flag representing their local café. These flags will be combined into a large display of bunting, which will be hung around The Hague in Amsterdam, symbolising the impact of this growing global movement.
Australia is home to more than 110 Repair Cafés, with 14 operating in the Brisbane region alone. In celebration of International Repair Day, Repair Cafe The Grove will move the October Repair Cafe event from the usual 4th Saturday to the 3rd Saturday to coincide with International Repair Day. Members of the Australian Repair Network will also be joining Repair Café The Grove on this special day.
Repair Cafe The Grove pops up each month (except December) at the Grovely Mitchelton Scout Den at 170 Blaker Road, Keperra and welcomes residents of suburbs of Ferny Grove, Upper Kedron, Ferny Hills, Arana Hills, Keperra, Everton Hills, Everton Park, Mitchelton, Gaythorne and Enoggera.
You can book your repair here https://transitionthegrove. org.au/repair-cafe/book-your-repair/ Bookings open one week before each workshop and you can request an email notification to remind you so you don't miss out.

Net Set Go Into Netball!
It's that time of the year again when Pine Hills Netball Club is getting ready to deliver its Woolworths NetSetGo program.
The club has a long history of delivering the program at their courts at the James Drysdale Reserve in Term 4. Delivered in a fun and safe environment, the program is coordinated by experienced coaches to ensure all participants, both girls and boys, gain a positive introduction to netball and learn the basic skills of the game. But not only that, it also encourages team spirit, fitness and fun. You have to love that!
This year’s program commences on Thursday 3rd October and runs for 8 weeks until 21st November. The first session is at 4:30pm for our younger players, while the second session, at 5:45pm caters for our older participants.
The cost for the 8-week program is $120, however if your child has played during this winter netball season and has already paid their Netball Queensland registration fee, then the cost is less than $20! You are also able to use your FairPlay voucher to cover the cost of the program.

Newmarket VIEW Steps Into Spring
The past two months have been eventful for the Newmarket VIEW Club, particularly for its dedicated craft group. The club was invited by two local primary schools to contribute craft items for their Father’s Day stalls. While the craft group took the lead, many club members pitched in, donating money, supplies, and baked goods to ensure a variety of gifts for students to choose from, all priced under $5. The initiative was a great success, and the club has been invited to contribute to the schools’ Christmas stalls as well.
Looking ahead, the club is preparing for a Christmas Pop-Up Stall fundraiser at Brookside Shopping Centre on Sunday, December 8. Proceeds from the stall will support their sponsorship of nine “Learning for Life” students through The Smith Family, with hopes of increasing their sponsorship numbers. The club is welcoming donations of craft supplies or handmade items for the stall.
In August, the club also enjoyed social gatherings, with 15 members braving the winter weather for lunch at Flinders Fish and Chips Café. Although rain cancelled their planned seaside walk, the group enjoyed a cosy meal. At their monthly lunch meeting, they were treated to a talk by artist Donna Gibb, who showcased her stunning wedding and floral artwork.
Looking ahead, the club will host author Sarah Todman in September and plan outings, including a morning tea at French & Mor Café, and a tour of Old Government House in October. The year will wrap up with a festive Christmas lunch at Room with Roses in Brisbane Arcade. For more information, contact Shirley (President) at 0448 556 214

Volunteers, Victories, and Bocce
An update from the Newmarket Bocce Club by Mario De Marco, Secretary Newmarket Bocce club
I would like to start by acknowledging our volunteers. Our club has a group of very dedicated individuals who handle everything from preparing the courts and general cleaning to food preparation, kitchen duties, and other helpful tasks. They are an inspiration to the club, and without them, it simply wouldn’t exist.
This leads me to last Sunday, the 18th of August, and the Belle Property Cup. A big thank you to Jonathan for his sponsorship for the second year. Unfortunately, he couldn’t attend, but Simon and Satu represented Belle Property Newmarket on his behalf. We had 24 players forming 8 teams of triples, each playing 4 games, and by the fourth game, it was shaping up to be a close competition.
Lunch was fantastic, thanks to Gina Rotili and her culinary helpers. With a raffle and plenty of cheer, it made for a great day of competition. Simon presented the awards to the winners and runners-up.
So, if you're selling, buying, or renting, make sure to have a chat with Belle Property Newmarket—they won’t let you down.
While our competitions may seem repetitive, believe me, each one is unique in its own way. Simon presented the trophy to the winners Charlie Cappellano Vittorio De Luca and Lewis Sciortino. Congratulations to all. And remember, there are no losers in bocce—we are all winners.

A Bountiful Harves at HOG
An update from the Hills Organic Garden
Autumn, winter and spring have provided the HOG community with an abundance of delicious fruit and vegetables.
In the vegetable department, some vegetables include; cabbages, beans, snow peas, baby spinach, silverbeet, kale, carrots, leeks, lettuce. As for the fruits, the strawberry garden has been producing some very nice berries and the mulberry tree (although very young) has been producing some nice mulberries. Furthermore, there are quite a few tomato plants which will be producing some fruit soon.
However, with the warmer months approaching, planting will slow down and the gardens will have a well earned rest. As plants die back, they will be chopped and placed in the compost bays to break down and create some fantastic compost for the gardens next autumn.
The HOG community have a wonderful group of members who turn up every Sunday to carry out chores as well as having the added bonus of social interaction.
The Hills Organic Garden is a great place for “green thumbs” and lovers of organic vegetables to come and enjoy the company of like minded people as well as being able to grow, harvest and eat healthy vegetables.
The garden is a community venture where volunteers work together to grow a chemical-free harvest which they can all share. So why not come along on a Sunday afternoon to have a look around and have a chat with us. With the hot weather approaching, our time at the garden will now be from 3pm5pm You will find the group at 416 Bunya Road, Bunya next to the Off Leash Dog Park. Membership Fees per year are $20 for adults, $30 for a family and $10 for Juniors.

Versatile Herbs
An update from the Mitchelton & Districts Garden Club
The Queensland Herb Society joined us in September with an enlightening talk on how to use herbs in the kitchen and around the home. Society Treasurer, Elspeth Davies, highlighted the versatility of herbs, offering tips on how to incorporate them into everyday life beyond culinary uses. Our members learned how to use a vast range of herbs in scrumptious and interesting ways. Among her many intriguing suggestions, Elspeth explained how elderflower can be used to flavour champagne, cordial or muffins, while the leaves of scented geraniums make an instant potpourri for the home.
Elspeth’s engaging talk was a reminder of the incredible versatility of herbs. From enhancing meals to creating a more natural and fragrant home environment, herbs offer a wealth of possibilities. The Queensland Herb Society continues to inspire herb enthusiasts with their practical knowledge and passion for all things herbal and we greatly appreciated their visit to our club meeting.
Members and invited guests will celebrate the club’s 60th Anniversary in October. If you would like to visit us, please join us on the first Thursday in November at The Enoggera Memorial Hall (entrance via Trundle St) at 9:30am for a 10am start. Entry is $5 and morning tea is provided. You will be warmly welcomed. Feel free to contact us via email at mitcheltongc@gmail.com for further information.
‘Weeding it out’ with the Stafford Garden Club
Did you know that BCC spends more than $5 million each year on weed management?
Garden ornamentals account for 66% of environmental weeds and about 10 new exotic species are established each year. Brisbane is host to more than 400 invasive weed species. You can help by using the ‘Online Weed Identification Tool for Brisbane’ to find weed plants in your garden. When you remove them, it is a good idea to replace them with a native alternative.
The club’s speaker for October is Phil Adams who will talk will centre around ‘History of the Botanic Gardens and Early Brisbane.
The Stafford Garden Club members meet at the OES Hall cnr Kitchener Rd and Bohland St, Kedron. We meet on the 19th of September at 9.30am for Morning Tea, to buy from the plant stall and to admire the exhibits on the bench. The meeting starts at 10am. Visitors and new members are very welcome. Find us on Facebook at Stafford Garden Club Brisbane or email staffordgardenclub@gmail.com

THE FERNY REPORT
by Mark Furner M.P. State Member for Ferny Grove
Dawson Parade Level Crossing Fix On The Way
The Level Crossing on Dawson Pde has always been a problem. I have been fighting to include the Dawson Pde Level Crossing in the Miles Government’s SEQ Level Crossing Removal Plan.
I am very pleased to report I have been successful, and a reelected Miles Government will progress the Dawson Pde Level Crossing to the planning stage in 2025!
A planning study is the first step towards a business case for each crossing included in the program and establishes a list of solutions for each crossing – including construction of an overpass.
roaring success (with Queenslanders saving over one million dollars a day) that we have decided to make it permanent! 50 cents.
Westside Grovely FC Change Rooms
I had the great pleasure of presenting some of the awards at the Westside Grovely FC Trophy Day recently and, while there, I announced that a re-elected Miles Government will build new unisex change rooms for the club! The club has been crying out for these new facilities and, with the expansion of women and girl’s football, these change rooms will be more needed than ever.

This is excellent news, and I look forward to the results of the study in the new year..

Update
Patricks Road and Oakleigh State School Hall builds are on schedule for completion for the first day of the 2025 school year. These are two of four new halls and over 70 new and renovated classrooms constructed in the electorate since I became the Member for Ferny Grove. Education is so important, and I have worked hard to make sure our students have the best facilities possible – and there is more on the way!

MAKING ENOGGERA WARD AN EVEN BETTER PLACE TO LIVE
An update from Cr Andrew Wines, Enoggera Ward
Windsor Community Centre - Official Opening
The grand opening of the brand-new Windsor Community Centre was held on Saturday, 7th September 2024, was a standout event. The new centre is an event space, small offices, and garden area that will be made available for Community uses and activities.
The opening kicked off, literally, with students from St Mary of the Cross School performing the Nut Bush, followed by an excellent performance by the Brisbane Male Apollo Choir,
showcasing the local talent in the Windsor community. The event also had a range of stalls, hosted by local sports, such as Windsor Bowls, and community groups, such as the Coffee Brigade. The Brisbane Inner North Lions also held a sausage sizzle. All the while, Windsor local BenJam, kept the crowd entertained and encouraged kids to join in on the musical fun! While the final management agreements are being completed and booking systems set up, please be assured the centre will be available to the community soon. I’m proud to have been ale to deliver this facility for Enoggera Ward, and I look forward to seeing it become a vibrant part of our community.
Supporting local sport and community groups
I continue to support the local sport and community groups in Enoggera Ward. Recently, I sponsored the Friday Night Lights rugby league competition and the Gaythorne Community Kindergarten Disco. Seeing the joy on the children’s faces as they danced under the new disco lights, I helped them secure, was priceless! The fundraiser was among the most successful events the kindergarten has had so far.
If you’re part of a local organisation or not-for-profit that needs a helping hand, don’t hesitate to reach out. You can always find me at the Enoggera Ward Office, ready and eager to support the great work we all do together.
1. An ancient Egyptian game
Many bowls historians believe that the game developed from the Egyptians. One of their pastimes was to play skittles with round stones. Artefacts of this game were found in tombs dating 5,000 B.C.
2. The world’s oldest bowls pitch
The oldest lawn bowls site still played on is in Southampton, England. Records show that the green has been in use since 1299 A.D.
4. The home of modern bowls
The home of the modern game is Scotland.

Safety where you live with the Making our Community Safer Plan
Everton News from your State Member for Everton TIM MANDER
Queensland needs a fresh start and the LNP has The Right Plan for Queensland’s Future. If the LNP forms government, we will implement our "Making our Community Safer" plan, which includes:
Adult Crime, Adult time policy
The Adult Crime, Adult time policy will ensure:
• Youth offenders committing serious crimes will receive adult sentences
• Enshrining in legislation the rights of victims ahead of offenders’ rights
• Clear message to offenders that they will serve adult time for serious crime, ensuring consequences for actions
• Abolishing detention as a last resort to unshackle the courts and deliver sentences in line with community expectations
Daniels Law
Establishment of a new Public Child Sex Offender Register to be known as “Daniels Law” in memory of young Daniel Morcombe.
This Register will protect children and put the rights of children, victims and parents ahead of the rights of dangerous predators.
A Public Child Sex Offender Register will protect the state’s children and create a stronger system to restore safety in the community.
Safer Children, Safer Communities Policy
• Reform Residential Care system to break the cycle of youth crime with focus on discipline and education
• 20% boost to Child Safety officer numbers to aid early intervention
• 24hour dual carer supervision to provide safety, restore behavioral consequences for children and ensure they are attending school
• New Secure Care facility for young people with mental health needs as well as a new professional foster care program for kids with complex needs
Youth Justice Schools Policy
• Two Youth Justice schools for the LNP’s early intervention plan
• School programs to be based on crime diversion, keeping at risk teen offenders off the streets, and out of crime
• Provides discipline, support, education and structure to divert young lives away from crime and stop them from becoming serious repeat offenders
Only by changing the government will we get Queensland heading in the right direction.
Recently I had the pleasure of refereeing the Everton Park State School, Teacher’s vs Students touch match! There were some impressive skills on display, but it was the students who took home the trophy. I’m happy to report that no one was sent to the sin bin, and I didn't have to call upon the bunker at any stage!
