Toy Drive Honours an Angel

By Georgia Wright Five-year-old Emily Borg, a deeply loved member of our community, has devastatingly lost her battle against a rare cancer. To honour their angel’s passing, Emily’s family has organised a Christmas toy drive for children at the Queensland Children’s Hospital.

‘It is with broken hearts and shattered dreams that we share with you that our light and our laughter—our daughter Emily—left us yesterday for her next big adventure,’ writes her mother, Emma Cantrell. Emma and her partner Brodie Borg’s world changed forever on Wednesday 1st March, 2023, when their little girl was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, an aggressive childhood cancer. Emily’s condition was initially mistaken for a viral infection and consequent inflammation of the hip joint when she developed a limp and lost her appetite entirely. However, in lieu of Emma acting on mother’s intuition, further tests were undertaken, and a grapefruit-sized tumour was discovered in Emily’s abdomen. Within four weeks, the cancer had spread to her spine, her bones, and her head. While receiving the best possible care at the Queensland Children’s Hospital, Emily underwent 6 months of intensive chemotherapy treatment and surgery. It wasn’t until June 28th, 2023, that Emily’s surgeon, Dr Borzi, emerged from the operating theatre with nothing short of a miracle: ‘I got it all,’ he told Emily’s family, regarding the last remnants of Emily’s tumour. However, celebrations were cut short when Emily developed a rare infection after receiving a bone marrow transplant—her eventual cause of passing. Sadly, Emily would have overcome the infection if she were

not immunocompromised after receiving intense c h e m o t h e r a p y. E m m a writes, ‘Emily left us in the same way she came to us: in our arms, surrounded by love, with no trace of cancer in her body. ‘In spite of everything Emily faced…[she] was the picture of childhood happiness, yet she endured a nightmare beyond comprehension. In her Emily last Christmas short time with us, she opening her presents. taught us more about life and love, and resilience and strength, than we would have ever learned without her.’ To spread awareness and honour their gorgeous girl, Emily’s family arranged for a local toy drive to take place. To put smiles on sick children’s faces this Christmas at the Queensland Children’s Hospital. If you have a toy you would like to donate, drop off locations are; Professionals Priority Ferny Hills on 5/126 Ferny Way, Whisk & Grind Cafe, 6 Bunya Park Drive, Eatons Hill and LJ Hooker Albany Creek on 5/25 Ferguson St, Albany Creek. All toy donations will be delivered to the hospital on December 18th. To dearest Emily, we thank your pure heart and kind soul for rubbing off on our community. Your unwavering spirit has reminded us that to simply keep smiling is all that matters. You will be remembered and missed by all.

Leon Field—The Best in His Field

In the world of gymnastics, dedication and sheer persistence are the cornerstones of success. For 11-year-old local gymnast and Patricks Road State School student Leon Field, these qualities have been at the core of his inspiring journey for the past three years. Being a grade 6 student on the brink of high school, Leon dedicates most of his afterschool hours to competitive gymnastics. His journey began at Lawnton Gymnastics Club, where he took the leap of joining a team 12 months ago. From the get-go, Leon was determined to follow in the footsteps of successful Lawnton athletes. In order to stand among the best, he understood that he’d need to work with the club’s top-notch coaches and supportive team environment, which drove him to sign up to the club in the first place. Of course, it has all paid off in his favour. While he continues to climb the ranks at Lawnton, his current goal is to achieve working at the prestigious levels of 5 and 6 in the sport. Leon tells Echo News that his favourite elements of the sport are performing on the high bar, pommel, and rings. So, what's next for this ambitious gymnast? After just missing out last year due to results, Leon Field with team mates Leon’s heart is set on

making Queensland’s development team in 2023. Having unwavering commitment to reach this long-standing goal, Leon is determined to train harder and prove himself a second time round. Leon also dreams of being selected for the coveted Team Future group, which would allow him to train at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) in Canberra a few times a year. However, Leon’s gymnastics journey is not simply about what he aspires to achieve; it's also about the support and opportunities he's found along the way. He is set to be part of the Ferny Advanced Sporting Teams at Ferny Grove High School next year. This program is tailor-made for individual athletes, like Leon, to achieve their sporting goals, all while striving to maximize their performance in their chosen sports. It's a testament to the support system that surrounds Leon and his fellow athletes as they chase their dreams. Leon’s inspiring story is a reminder that, with hard work and the right foundations, we can all achieve our dreams. The future is bright for this young gymnast, and we are thrilled to see what heights he will reach. Front page image courtesy of Medal Shots Photography

Spreading Wheels of Joy

In a heartwarming display of community spirit, Stuart Murray, a local resident, discovered an opportunity to make a difference when he realized he had enough spare bike parts to construct an entire bicycle.

Noting the financial challenge many face in affording mountain bikes suitable for off-road single-track riding, Stuart’s observation sparked an inspiring idea which he took to his local club, the North Brisbane MTB club. Stuart proposed the idea of members pooling their spare parts to assemble bikes for donation to those in need. The suggestion received enthusiastic support from the club and its members, leading to a concerted effort to restore and upgrade not just one but two full bikes. The collective effort kicked off with the club gathering to dismantle the bikes and assess necessary components for the rebuild. However, word soon got around the Mountain Biking community and quickly gained traction beyond expectations. The Mountain Biker shop in Stafford magnanimously donated an additional two bikes and extended support by aiding in assembly and sourcing essential parts for the bikes. Recognising the bikes' weathered condition, the club sought a solution, reaching out to Ben Wallis Paints. Ben, showing immense generosity produced two unique and special designs at cost, repainting the bikes and adding a touch of vibrancy. While progress flourished with the bikes' restoration, the club pondered the best means to put the bikes to use within the community. Stuart suggested collaborating with OpentraX, a local small business dedicated to introducing individuals of

Page 8 - December 2023, The Everton Echo

Matt, Greg, Mark and Alex of North Brisbane MTB club piecing together a bike for donation varying ability levels to outdoor activities in a supportive and secure environment. The club unanimously decided to donate the bikes to OpentraX, ensuring these bicycles find riders who can experience the joy of mountain biking. This wonderful initiative wouldn't have been possible without the collective efforts and support from various quarters. The North Brisbane MTB Club members, Darren and his team at "The Mountain Biker" in Stafford, and Ben from Ben Wallis Paints who all played pivotal roles in bringing this benevolent project to fruition. This incredible initiative not only refurbishes bikes but also embodies the true essence of community compassion and inclusivity. It's a shining example of how a shared passion for biking can translate into making a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

Embracing the gift of giving for Karuna’s palliative care services

This Christmas, Karuna Hospice Services is counting on the Greater Brisbane North community to embrace the gift of giving and help them continue providing free, in-home specialised palliative care to patients and families.

Karuna CEO Tracey Porst said although families are faced with the most heartbreaking time in their lives, the role of Karuna was to provide a holistic approach to caring for patients and families in the comfort of their home. ‘It takes a village as the saying goes. Karuna has a 30-year history of uniquely blending nursing, medical, family and spiritual care, which is a vital source of peace of mind to hundreds of families each year,’ said Mrs Porst. ‘Families know that when our team arrive, they can breathe a sigh of relief, knowing that we will work together with them, to support their loved one to live well and die peacefully.’ ‘As we head towards Christmas, many people are preparing for the festive season, so we ask the community to please consider including a gift to Karuna to support those in need.’ ‘Donating to our Christmas Appeal will help Karuna care for people, living with terminal illness. Enabling someone to remain at home with their loved ones during the holiday season will make a world of difference this Christmas.’ Karuna’s clinical and family support teams will continue to provide vital services to families throughout the entire festive period.

www.echo-news.com.au

‘Karuna’s nursing, medical and family support teams will maintain their delivery of specialised palliative care, which we do in collaboration with the patient’s GP and specialist, to ensure their individualised needs are met.’ ‘We will also remain committed to working with patients and families to coordinate pain and symptom management, emotional support and counselling, bereavement support, spiritual care, as well as carer education and training. You can support Karuna and commemorate your own loved one, by donating to the charity and placing a bauble in their name, on Karuna’s virtual Christmas tree. Bocce Club’s Nautical Adventure

The Bocce Club embarked on a delightful social outing to St Helena Island on October 29, creating cherished memories for the 52 adults and 2 children who participated in the maritime escapade. The group was whisked away on a bus to Hamilton, where they boarded the “Lady Brisbane” for a nautical adventure along the Brisbane River.

The day began with the club‘s customary morning tea, featuring espresso and biscotti, setting the tone for a day of camaraderie and exploration. Captain Jim played the role of the guide, providing a fascinating commentary and a historical overview of the Brisbane River, adding an educational touch to the scenic journey. The highlight of the outing was a leisurely 2-hour walking tour of St Helena, allowing participants to immerse themselves in the island‘s history and natural beauty. The group then reconvened on the boat for a BBQ lunch, complete with all the trimmings, providing a satisfying culinary experience against the picturesque backdrop of the river. After a day filled with laughter, exploration, and good company, the group returned to the pontoon, where the waiting bus transported them back to their departure points. The outing was not only a testament to the Bocce Club‘s strong camaraderie but also a celebration of beautiful weather and the joys of shared experiences. As the group reminisces about their St Helena adventure, it stands as a testament to the spirit of community and the joy found in exploring the high seas of the Brisbane River. Helping to get broken Female of the Species lives back on track Takes Centre Stage in Satirical Comedy

Prepare for a riotous evening as Growl Theatre proudly presents Joanna Murray-Smith’s satirical comedy, The Female of the Species.

The unprecedented times we have experienced in recent years has seen the need for services provided by local community support organisation Carinity increase dramatically.

With the season of giving upon us, the Gaythorne-based notfor-profit has launched its annual Christmas Appeal to make life a little easier for Queenslanders living with disadvantage. Sophie* and Theresa* arrived at Carinity’s specialist domestic and family violence counselling service, Talera, six months after escaping an abusive home. They had just found stable housing after living in a refuge, were in financial distress and suffering from complex trauma. Through long-term, trauma-informed counselling, both Sophie and her mother made significant improvements in their abilities to cope with overwhelming emotions and to trust in their own capabilities. On completing therapy, Sophie is doing well in school and has developed positive friendships with her peers. Theresa has achieved significant improvements in her mental health and has been engaged in stable employment for more than a year. Carinity services such as Talera provide crucial services in the community. ‘There are alarmingly high rates of domestic and family in Australia, and a real need for long-term therapy to help people process and heal from complex trauma,’ a Carinity Talera senior practitioner said. ‘We are one of the only services funded to provide long-term, free trauma therapy to vulnerable children, young people and their protective caregivers.’ The financial support of kind donors has never been more vital to ensuring that Carinity can continue to support vulnerable people. You can donate online at www.carinity. org.au/donations or phone 3550 3737. All donations are tax deductible.* Names have been changed.

Directed by the talented duo of Leisa Bye and Rebecca McMahon, this uproarious production promises to keep audiences on the edge of their seats. The play revolves around Margot Mason, a self-obsessed‚ feminist icon whose day takes a chaotic turn. From a guntoting student to abandoned children and an irate taxi driver, Margot finds herself entangled in a series of misadventures that threaten to derail her quest to write her next book. MurraySmith’s deliciously wicked comedy masterfully walks the tightrope between satire and farce, showcasing that, in this case, the female of the species is not only deadlier but funnier than the male. Watch the laughter and chaos unfold at Growl Theatre, located at Windsor School of Arts, 381 Lutwyche Road, Windsor from 10th February to 24th February, 2024. Evening shows commence at 7.30 pm, with matinee shows at 2pm. Tickets are priced at $20 for full admission, $17 for concession, and $15 for groups of 6 or more. Secure your seats online at Growl Theatre’s ticket portal here https://growltheatre.org. au/buy-tickets/ So, don’t miss this opportunity to witness the comedic brilliance of The Female of the Species as it takes centre stage in an unforgettable theatrical experience. Singers & Lions Unite for Gala Concert

Serenata Singers, in collaboration with the Ashgrove/ The Gap Lions Club, celebrated their annual Gala Concert on Saturday, October 28.

This enduring partnership has continued to thrive, delighting audiences with a diverse selection of songs rehearsed over months. Notably, the proceeds from this musical extravaganza are shared between Serenata Singers and the Lions Medical Research Foundation. Under the theme of ‘Music from the Heart,’ this year‘s concert featured classic medleys from iconic productions like Phantom of the Opera, Les Misérables, and Cole Porter‘s True Love. To kick off the evening, the audience was treated to beautiful renditions of two church classics, including Vivaldi‘s Gloria In Excelsis and Bach’s Joy to Man’s Desiring. The event also welcomed two special guest performers: Alison Siemon, who played the theme from On Golden Pond, and Ray Wiseman, who engaged the audience in a spirited rendition of Wandering the King’s Highway. The performance reached its grand finale with a moving rendition of Rutter’s For the Beauty of the Earth and an audience-pleasing rendition of I Am Australian, a perennial favorite. This spectacular event would not have been possible without the dedicated efforts of the organizing committee, volunteers, and Lions Club members who worked tirelessly to bring the entire concert together. The Serenata Singers and Ashgrove/ The Gap Lions Club‘s annual Gala Concert is a testament to the power of community collaboration, music, and philanthropy, enriching the lives of all who attended.

‘Where did the year go?’ Well for the Hills Players, 2023 it was another full one, with their program of two plays and a Trivia Night.

The first production for the year was the Festival of One Act plays, aptly named ‘Dysfunctional’. Each play entertained the audience with its sliding scale of dysfunction and mayhem. Our Trivia Night in September was another great success with Trivia Guru Andrew McMicking at the helm, it was always a guaranteed fun night out for all who attended. The year ended on a high note for the Hills Players, with the riotous fun of the last production ‘Four Old Broads’. It was an Australia premier and a huge hit. The waves of laughter from the audience, testimony to the witty script and delightfully eccentric characters. A big thank you to those who contributed to making the play one of our best. The cast; of course, Front of House, Light and Sound Crew, Stage Manager, Prompts. But our biggest thanks go to our patrons, who come along to our shows and support local amateur theatre. It means the world to the Hills Players. We’re excited for what 2024 has in store. Be the first to know what the group is up to by watching out for the latest news in future editions of the Echo News and following us on Facebook. We would love to welcome younger members to our group. A diverse membership, opens up opportunities for a bigger selection of plays to choose from; and to bring to the stage for our patrons. Till next year, warmest wishes for a safe and Merry Christmas from all the Hills Players.

Maria, Sandra & Robyn covering cakes for local service organisations, Christmas is rushing towards us and with it comes busy times for the Brisbane North Cake Decorators. By the time this article is read their small Christmas cakes for the Mitchelton Caring Cuisine clients will be being delivered and enjoyed. The focus will then be turning to family plans for Christmas. The club had their last meeting for the year recently and enjoyed a Christmas afternoon tea. Everyone contributed and a wonderful array of Christmas foods to eat were enjoyed by all. There is no meeting in December so the next meeting will be in January when they will be planning our activities for 2024. Exciting activities are planned for next year so watch this space to stay informed. At the January meeting, there will be a demonstration of how to create a flexible, edible fabric -like decoration using chocolate and gelatine. There are always new techniques being discovered and it is great that the ladies can keep up with these trends. All members would like to wish everyone a safe, happy and peaceful time over the Christmas period. They love seeing new members and can be contacted on their Facebook page, Brisbane North Cake Decorators Association QCDA or via email brisbanenorthcakedecorators@gmail.com

The Finishing Touch to your home... The Artistry Behind Sign Artist

Sign Artist, a plaque-crafting business with a legacy spanning 37 years, has flourished to all new heights after experiencing a change of guard.

Eight years ago, Neil found himself grappling with the challenge of renting out a 1920’s cottage in Brisbane. Frustrated by the real estate’s generic listing, he realised the need to infuse the cottage with character to connect with potential renters. While delving into the property’s history, Neil discovered the names of its original owners. He then commissioned a house plaque to be installed at what became known as ‘Hemsworth Cottage.’ The property found a tenant within the sign’s first week of installation. This incredible turn of events marked the beginning of a new chapter for Neil and his wife, who then seized the opportunity to purchase a NSW based plaque-crafting company, Sign Artist and moved it to Brisbane. Fuelled by the success of Hemsworth Cottage, their interstate move kickstarted Sign Artist’s evolution into a bespoke plaque-crafting business with nationwide clientele. Neil shares his personal touch with customers, many of whom hail from Queensland and visit the workshop in Fortitude Valley. Here, amidst the clinking of tools and the scent of fresh wood, clients are guided through the intricate process of designing their unique plaques, be it the timeless elegance of traditional timber-framed glass signs or the contemporary appeal of 100% waterproof painted alternatives. Neil shares, ‘At Sign Artist, we use the highest quality materials to create a product that you will treasure forever…

Page 20 - December 2023, The Everton Echo

We offer a wide variety of beautiful designs to suit to all styles of homes, from contemporary architecturally designed homes to classic Queenslanders. Our polished glass and aluminium house name signs and address plaques are perfect for modern rendered brick houses. Our timber frame and aluminium frame house name signs complement classic heritage homes and Australian Neil, Founder of Sign Artist style terraces.’ In this era of industrialised mass production, Neil and his team have carved a niche for themselves by preserving the artistry of handcrafted signs. Each plaque tells a story—one that goes beyond its physical form, encapsulating the essence of a place, a home, and the people who make it unique. Sometimes, its the smallest details that make the most significant impact. For all enquiries, or to place an order now in time for Christmas, head to Sign Artist’s website at www.signartist. com.au or call Neil on 07 3124 9884. He looks forward to receiving your call!

Gift Meaningfully this Christmas

Christmas is a time for giving, and this year, there is a special way to make your gift count even more. Introducing Secret Santa Ecards that allow you to donate a box of produce to feed a family in need this holiday season.

In a world where the cost of living has pushed many individuals and families towards seeking assistance from charities for food, there is a growing need to support those who are less fortunate. Over 70% of people accessing food relief services this year had never done so before, highlighting the pressing issue of food insecurity in our communities. Enter The Mini Farm Project – an organisation dedicated to ‘Building Farms to Feed Aussies in Need.’ With two active farms in Samford and Loganlea State High School, they have ambitious plans to establish more farms in the South East Queensland area. The goal? To provide fresh and sustainable food sources for those who require it most for free each week. To achieve this mission, The Mini Farm Project has introduced an innovative solution: an online Secret Santa Ecard. Instead of the traditional gift-giving approach of buying small trinkets that may ultimately go to waste, you now have the opportunity to make a lasting impact by donating a box of fresh produce to help feed a family in need this Christmas. The Secret Santa Ecard is not only a heartfelt gesture but also an environmentally friendly one. For those who care about our planet, it‘s worth noting that the Ecard has a near-zero carbon footprint. Additionally, your intended recipient receives a heartwarming animated Ecard in their email, making the experience all the more special. Founder of The Mini Farm Project, Nick Said, shared his inspiration behind the Secret Santa Ecard: ‘I wanted to create a product with meaning for Secret Santa. I always received something I did not want, and it usually ended up in the bin. This year, I created our Secret Santa Ecard to make a difference.’ So, why not change the way you give this holiday season? If you‘re participating in a Secret Santa exchange, The Mini Farm Project‘s Secret Santa Ecard offers a unique opportunity to warm hearts and truly make a difference. This year, rather than buying a trinket, you can choose to donate a box of produce to help feed a family over Christmas. Your contribution will not only put smiles on the faces of those who receive the fresh and nourishing produce but also fill your heart with the warmth that comes from knowing you‘ve made a meaningful and lasting impact this holiday season. Let‘s embrace the spirit of giving with purpose, and together, we can make this Christmas a truly special and heartwarming experience for everyone, especially those in need. Secret Santa Ecards from The Mini Farm Project are here to transform your holiday gift-giving into an opportunity for compassion and generosity. You can order here https://mfp.org.au/collections/ecards

Lions Clinch Double Win at District Convention

In a stellar turn of events, Brisbane Bunya Lions Club representatives were called to the stage twice at the recent Q3 District Convention in Millmerran. They received awards for Club of the Year and LEO Club of the Year (young Lions).

President Donna Hedges said the win epitomised what has been a successful year of service to the community in the North-West suburbs of Brisbane with numerous highlights. ‘Performing best across the Q3 District of 67 hardworking clubs, it was the outcomes from a wide range of activities that our club engaged in during the year that nailed the win.’ ‘Along with inducting new members, the club tirelessly fundraises and supports the community at events including Neighbour Day, Easter Egg Hunt, Music in the Park, Twilight Years Expo, ANZAC Day service, Cure4Brain Cancer Walk.’ ‘Our famous Christmas Cakes are available all year round and I’m sure you’ve seen us at numerous Bunning BBQ’s, not to mention the highly successful annual Carols in the Park Event. ‘I want to thank the community for their support of our hard work, and thank Tim Mander MP, Cr Andrew Wines, Cr Tracy Davis and Cr Matt Constance for their engagement and support of the club‘s activities. ‘We are out there in the community serving those in need by stealth and with full hearts in service of others. ‘The Lions Motto ‘We Serve’ drives the commitment of our members to support individuals and organisations in need.’ Furthermore, President Hedges said the LEO Club of the Year Award was proudly accepted on behalf of our young Lions at Mitchelton State High School.

Lions Club of Brisbane Bunya members John Creagh, John Liddle, John Duignan, Kay Liddle, Kevin Hedges, Donna Hedges and Immediate Past District Governor Graeme Emery ‘Congratulations to the LEO Club for winning the 201Q3 Leo Club of the Year award for the fifth time.’ ‘This is a remarkable achievement that reflects the dedication and hard work these young people have done in our community, including Clean Up Australia, Shoe Box Appeal, Cup Cake and BBQ fundraisers for humanitarian support and other projects,’ President Hedges added. Upcoming Lions events include the annual Christmas Raffle, sales of Christmas Cakes and Puddings and the Carols in the Park event on Saturday 9th December.

THE FERNY REPORT

by Mark Furner M.P. State Member for Ferny Grove Ferny Grove Park ‘n’ Ride now open

When I first began doorknocking in 2014 to win the seat of Ferny Grove the number one issue people raised was the need for more parking at Ferny Grove Station. As a result of these requests, I promised to fight for that parking increase. Today I am pleased to report the Palaszczuk Government, in cooperation with the Federal Government and private enterprise, has delivered on that promise. The new Park ‘n’ Ride F e r n y G ro v e has now been operating Park ‘n’ Ride for a number of weeks and parking pressure at the station has been greatly improved. I have even been told by people who have gone to use the carpark after 9am that they were able to easily secure a car space – something which was very rare previously. It has been a long road and I thank everyone for their patience. Major local projects

Opening of the Ferny Grove Park ‘n’ Ride in November like the new Ferny Grove Park ‘n’ Ride don’t just happen. It is only through the patient support of the community and the backing of engaged local groups that we were able to deliver this much needed upgrade. In addition to the thousands of locals who told me we needed a major parking expansion at the station, local community groups like the Ferny Grove & Upper Kedron Residents Association and The Hills & Districts Chamber of Commerce have provided strong support for this vital local project. That’s why I was proud to be joined by Carleen and Max from the Residents Association and Craig from the Chamber of Commerce for the opening of the Park ‘n’ Ride at the Ferny Grove Railway Station. Now stage two is underway. It will provide more amenity for our community with new residential units, shopping, day care, a gym, and cinemas. Please be aware traffic conditions at the site have changed to allow for the next phase of the development.

Get Ready for Extreme Weather Season

We are now well into Queensland’s storm season and locals all know how sudden and dangerous our extreme weather events can be. Emergency Services Queensland advises everyone to follow the three steps: 1. Understand your risk; 2. Make a plan; 3. Pack a kit. Embracing Summer's Arrival

An update from the Hills Organic Garden As the days grow warmer and the garden dries out, members of the Hills Organic Garden have been hard at work, making the most of the transition from winter to summer.

With the majority of their winter and spring crops now harvested, the focus has shifted to tidying up the garden and preparing for the hotter months ahead. Growing vegetables in the scorching Australian summer can be challenging, but dedicated gardeners at the Hills Organic Garden are undeterred. They continue to care for their flourishing tomato plants, capsicums, and silverbeet. Additionally, they have planted pumpkin seeds with high hopes for a bountiful harvest in the coming months. This community-driven venture, located at 416 Bunya Road, Bunya, adjacent to the Off Leash Dog Park, boasts a passionate and hardworking group of members. Their efforts have not gone unnoticed, as they regularly receive compliments from the general public about the garden's picturesque appearance. The Hills Organic Garden is a haven for green thumbs and organic vegetable enthusiasts. It provides a space for likeminded individuals to come together, cultivate chemicalfree produce, and enjoy the fruits of their labor. Volunteers collaborate to maintain the garden, ensuring a communal, shared harvest. Caring for Potted Plants when Summer Holidays Beckon An update from the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club

Club member, Christine de Chastel, tends to her potted plants

As Summer holiday plans call, tending to your potted plants can become a challenge. Fortunately, with a little preparation and care, your plants can continue to thrive while you're away.

Group Pots Strategically: Grouping potted plants can create a microclimate that helps conserve moisture and provides shade. Position your pots close together to reduce water evaporation and protect them from the harsh afternoon sun. Mulch for Moisture Retention: Apply a layer of mulch, such as straw or wood chips, to the top of the soil in your potted plants to help retain moisture. Self-Watering Systems: These devices slowly release water into the soil over an extended period, ensuring that your plants receive a consistent water supply while you're on holiday. Hydrate Before You Go: Thoroughly water your potted plants before leaving for your trip. Deep watering will help the plants establish a reserve of moisture that they can draw upon during your absence. Find a Plant-Sitter: Ask a friend or neighbour to look after your garden while you're away. They can water your plants and check for signs of distress. Shade and Shelter: Consider moving your potted plants to a shaded or sheltered area. This might be a covered patio or a friend's house. With these tips, you can head off on your holiday with peace of mind, knowing your plants will be well taken care of in your absence. At our December meeting, Members and invited guests will enjoy a Christmas lunch and awards presentation ceremony, when the Champion Exhibitor for 2023 will be announced. Season’s Greetings to all, with our best wishes for a bright and peaceful 2024.
