Bradbury Park Wins Big at Architecture Awards
Bradbury Park, located in Kedron, has emerged as a beacon of architectural innovation, securing four prestigious awards at the recent Greater Brisbane Architecture Awards.
This pioneering playscape, designed by Alcorn Middleton, was awarded the John Dalton Award for Building of the Year, the Greater Brisbane People’s Choice Award and two Commendations (for Public Architecture and Urban Design). Designed for the Brisbane City Council, the park is accessible for all but turns a particular spotlight on innovative play for teens (often overlooked in the design of public spaces). The

design provides children with opportunities to challenge themselves via different modes of play — including a mix of high-level activity zones, quiet hide-away spaces and more social areas.
At the awards ceremony, this innovative park garnered much acclaim with the Building of the Year jury members praising the architects’ ‘pioneering approach to playground planning’ and their ability to ‘reimagine the traditional park and
playground typology’. All of this was achieved whilst enhancing community wellbeing and championing inclusivity.
The Brisbane City Council goes further, describing the design as ‘… a new benchmark for both government and private industry in the provision of innovative play for older children.’ It just goes to show you what can be achieved when creativity converges with community needs!

Makenzie Weale: From Local Roots to Maroon Debut
Local lady Makenzie Weale, a 2019 graduate from Mt Maria College Mitchelton, made her debut for the Queensland Maroons in the Women’s State of Origin Rugby League Series Opener last month at Suncorp Stadium.
Mackenzie’s journey to this moment is a reflection of her roots in the community, having honed her skills in Rugby 7s Programs before transitioning to Rugby League with the Wests Mitchelton Panthers post-graduation.
Maroons coach Tahnee Norris selected the 21-year-old, who kickstarted her rugby league journey with the Wests Mitchelton Panthers, to join the squad after Keilee Joseph’s unfortunate injury.
‘I’m pretty excited... I was called into the squad last year at 19... being there was great, but there’s nothing like actually playing,’ expressed Mackenzie. ‘It’s unfortunate that Kiels got injured, but I’m thrilled, especially about debuting at Suncorp Stadium. Wearing maroon feels surreal; it’s definitely a pinch-me moment.’
Mackenzie, who currently plays for Meg Ward’s Norths Devils in the BMD Premiership and for the North Queensland Cowboys in NRLW, shared her parents’ overwhelming joy at her selection.
‘When I got the news at home, my mum couldn’t contain her happiness, and my dad shed quite a few tears,’ she recounted. ‘Tahnee called unexpectedly with the good news, and my parents were over the moon.’
This talented young lady’s ascent in the sport has been rapid. She started her rugby league journey at the age of 16 playing sevens. She then joined the Wests Mitchelton Panthers and the club have been a ‘second home’ to her, with her brother playing there, too.
Growing up in Mitchelton, Mackenzie’s affinity for the Maroons was ingrained from an early age, and especially at her school Mt Maria Mitchelton where she was the sports captain in 2019.
‘Origin time was special; one of my teachers would always dress in maroon,’ she reminisced. ‘Being part of it now is surreal. I love Queensland.’
Mackenzie finds inspiration in players like Shannon Mato, admiring their tough and relentless style. ‘I’m not a playmaker; I play tough footy, much like Mato,’ she remarked. Needless to say, we think Mackenzie has a very bright sporting career ahead of her.

Community comes together to support renovation of beloved hall
The Mitchelton community is celebrating a significant milestone in their efforts to renovate the cherished heritage-listed St. Matthew’s Anglican Hall, following the resounding success of their recent car boot sale. Held on March 9th, the car boot sale was just one of the fundraising events organized by the church community to secure much-needed funds for the restoration of their beloved church. Demonstrating the spirit of Mitchie, the entire community rallied together in support of these efforts, resulting in over $9,000 raised. This impressive sum underscores the shared dedication of the community to preserving their heritage and communal spaces.
Situated on Church Street, Mitchelton, the iconic St. Matthew’s Anglican Church is in dire need of renovation, with the building requiring significant repairs and refurbishments. However, the road ahead is daunting. The restoration and upkeep of St. Matthew’s Anglican buildings demand not only financial resources but also the involvement of skilled tradespeople.
As a small yet committed church community, they depend on the assistance of individuals who can contribute their expertise and time to the project. Thus, they are issuing a call to the wider community. If you possess trade skills or know someone who does, the church team encourages you to contact the parish office at 3851 0526. Your support will be invaluable in restoring the cherished heritage-listed hall, addressing critical issues such as roof repairs, termite damage, and repainting. Additionally, the community have more fundraising

Life on the ice for a local Navy meteorologist
People who think meteorologists in Australia are under pressure to get the forecast right should spare a thought for those working in frigid extremes with the Australian Antarctic Program.
One of those was Lieutenant Holly Boubouras, who grew up in McDowall and attended St Rita's College. Holly is now a Navy meteorologist from the Maritime Geospatial Warfare Unit, deployed to Casey Station during four months over summer. She was one in a long line of Navy meteorologists who’ve filled a role each season since 2009.
Beyond providing daily forecasts for the Australian stations, Casey, Mawson and Davis, the on-watch meteorologist also provides forecasting for field science projects, marine forecasts and operations support.
It’s a job made more complicated by what’s called the “A-factor”, or Antarctic Factor, according to Lieutenant Boubouras.
Meteorologists must grapple with limited observation equipment and satellite coverage, along with strong winds and intermittent internet access.
“Blizzards are a common occurrence, and advanced warning is required for each work group to secure their equipment to avoid it becoming a projectile hazard,” Lieutenant Boubouras said. They also produce aviation forecasts for local rotary and fixedwing flights, and flights from Hobart to Wilkins Aerodrome.
Lieutenant Boubouras provided route forecasts for the Million Year Ice Core Project traverse team, who travelled 1200km inland from Casey Station.
The extent of tasks often means the station’s meteorologist office opens at 4am, with three forecasters on a watch-keeping roster and one supporting from Hobart.
For Lieutenant Boubouras, the extreme conditions of Antarctica make it the highpoint of a meteorologist’s career.
‘The absence of roads makes aviation operations crucial, where meteorologists play a key role in ensuring safe flights through monitoring a range of hazards and weather phenomena specific to Antarctica,’ she said.
Lieutenant Boubouras said her deployment to such a unique environment significantly enhanced her skills as a meteorologist.
‘The most recent summer season facilitated the busiest aviation program the Australian Antarctic Program has ever undertaken with 16 A319 Airbus and seven RAAF C17A Globemaster inter-continental flights, amongst others. We also provided forecasts for RSV Nuyina and RV Investigator, coastal water forecasts and route forecasts for the traverse team travelling 1200km inland for the Million Year Ice Core Project. These operational forecasts increased my workload capacity and ability to convey meteorological forecasts to a variety of stakeholders.’
Lieutenant Boubouras will bring the skills and experience she obtained in Antarctica back to her Navy forecasting.
Before reaching the continent, Lieutenant Boubouras underwent survival training, including sleeping overnight on the ice.
Lieutenant Boubouras also visited remote locations such as Robbo’s Hut, offering a glimpse into the challenging life of early Antarctic pioneers.
Holly with one of the modes of transport around the Antarctic region
She had a summer swim in freezing waters surrounded by towering icebergs, and visited the penguin colony at Shirley Island.
‘For a more intimate encounter of the environment, inflatable rubber boat tours in Newcombe Bay unveil the mesmerising beauty of icebergs and surrounding islands,’ Lieutenant Boubouras said.
‘Antarctica itself transforms from simply being a frozen, barren continent, to testament of the resilience of both the environment and those fortunate enough to call it home, making the frozen continent a place of unparalleled fascination and enduring awe.’

to live well and die peacefully.
Increased demand for spiritual support through palliative care
Karuna Hospice Service is experiencing an increased demand for their spiritual care support services, for people receiving palliative or end of life care.
Spiritual care recognises a patient’s unique traditions, beliefs and practices, and provides guidance on how they can be used to bring peace of mind and comfort following a terminal diagnosis.
Karuna Chairman Dr John Gilmour said as a Buddhist based organisation, spiritual support is an integral part of the care offered to patients and families and supports people of all faiths, beliefs and those with no belief system at all.
‘When spiritual care is offered alongside traditional medical support, it may help to alleviate some of the complex emotions surrounding diagnosis and treatment. We help patients and families to gently accept their diagnosis, to live well, and to find peace in the inevitability of death,’ said Dr Gilmour.
‘Although spiritual care looks different for everyone, it could mean strengthening their religious belief or faith, supporting cultural practices and rituals, or simply deepening connections between family, friends, the environment, or a patient’s own confidence during such an emotional time.’
Spiritual wellbeing has been a pillar of Karuna’s care since its conception in 1992, when Venerable Pende Hawter had a vision to provide community palliative care at home, at no cost, to help alleviate the fear and suffering that comes with dying.
‘When people live alongside an awareness of their death, it can support them through their terminal illness and shift their perspective, allowing for a more meaningful and intentional life. Every day we ensure that Pende’s vision for living well and dying peacefully remains at the heart of what we do at Karuna.’
‘By making a tax-deductible gift today you can help patients and families access essential services such as spiritual care and counselling. A donation before 30 June will help fund Karuna’s holistic services during the next financial year.’

Backing a local business has never been easier with Moreton Money
City of Moreton Bay, in partnership with local business groups, is calling for the community to support local businesses by choosing a Moreton Money gift card for their next gift. With the recent introduction of digital gift cards, purchasing and using these cards has never been easier.
Mayor Peter Flannery said the cards can now be used like a normal EFTPOS card, making it easier for the community to spend their money how they want, and where they want.
‘Moreton Money gift cards now directly download to the mobile digital wallet, meaning supporting a local business is just a tap of the phone away,’ he said.
Moreton Money is an initiative that encourages the community to make the active choice to support their local businesses and consider changing their spending habits.
‘Small businesses, which are the backbone of the Moreton Bay economy, have been doing it tough in recent years with flood events, COVID-19 and skyrocketing costs across the board.
‘Instead of filling the pockets of huge corporations that are recording massive profits, I urge our community to think locally first. Purchasing a Moreton Money gift card makes a real difference to locals and the success of our small businesses.’
Moreton Money provides a wide variety of options for recipients to use their gift card in businesses and stores across Moreton Bay, spanning various industries and geographical
areas. There are hundreds of businesses already registered, and more coming online daily.
Back a local business and our whole community benefits with every $100 spent locally, generating around $180 of economic impact.
The Hills & Districts Chamber of Commerce Craig Shim believes Moreton Money is a game-changer for our community.
‘Moreton Money is all about making it easy to shop local and support local businesses, whether you’re treating yourself or giving a thoughtful gift, Moreton Money helps keep our money circulating right here in Moreton Bay, which is fantastic for everyone,’ Craig said.
‘Local spending is like fuel for our community’s economic engine, when we choose to shop at a local business, we’re not just making purchases, we’re investing in our neighbourhoods, supporting local jobs and keeping our communities unique and thriving.’
Moreton Money is part of Council’s Regional Economic Development Strategy (REDS), a blueprint for a bigger, bolder, and brighter economy which will ultimately create 100,000 new jobs in Moreton Bay through to 2041.

Calls To The Community To Give Generously
Aspley VIEW Club is urging the local community to give generously to The Smith Family’s Winter Appeal this year, to support thousands of children and young people with their education.
The education charity is aiming to raise $7.2 million nationally to help 17,000 additional students across Australia take part in its proven learning and mentoring programs.
It comes as a survey released by the charity found the majority of Australians have seen child poverty worsen in the last 12 months, with more than four out of five people agreeing that extra support for education is key to helping children and young people experiencing disadvantage.
CEO of The Smith Family, Doug Taylor, said while inflation is affecting all Australians, the most vulnerable members of our community are faring the worst.
‘It‘s been a particularly challenging time for the students and families we support, with the cost-of-living crisis affecting the price of housing, food and power.’
‘Families are having to make impossible decisions about where they spend their limited funds. This could mean paying for school essentials like digital devices or paying for a meal on the table.’
VIEW is the largest community sponsor of students on The Smith Family’s Learning for Life program, with Aspley club supporting 25 students through its fundraising activities. Planting Out The Crop
It has been all hands on deck at the Hills Organic Garden Club with planting beginning in earnest.
The weather at the moment is great, with enough rain to sustain new plants and the temperature has cooled down quite a lot. With the soil still being warm, this has provided ideal conditions to begin planting the 2024 crop. Beetroot, Pak Choy, Spinach, Lettuce, Carrots, Beans and Silverbeet have all been planted and with the warm soil, plants should be able to establish a good root system before the colder weather arrives. There are also a few sweet potatoes for members to take home and the pumpkins won't be too far away.
The Rosella bushes are producing well and members have been making some very tasty rosella jam. Furthermore, the herb garden is truely blossoming with flowering basil which is attracting the bees, society garlic (which has beautiful lavender flowers which are edible), thyme, tarragon, mother of herbs and garlic chives.
At the moment, our The HOG community is a friendly group who offer people in the Hills District the opportunity to grow vegetables using organic principles. Age is no barrier so feel free to pop along one Sunday afternoon to have a chat and a look around the beautiful garden.
As we head into winter and the days get shorter, members will now meet on a Sunday afternoon from 2pm - 4pm. As well, they also attend the garden through the week to water and do general maintenance.
You will find the Garden at 416 Bunya Road, Bunya next to the Off Leash Dog Park. Membership Fees per year are $20 for adults, $30 for family and $10 for Juniors. Visit www. hog.org.au, search The Hills Organic Garden on Facebook or phone 0415 856 532 for information. We look forward to meeting you.
Potting Plants Safely
An update from the Mitchelton & Districts Garden Club
Many speakers who visit our Club stress the importance of wearing a mask when handling potting mix.
We are often advised of the dangers posed due to the potential presence of harmful microorganisms, dust and chemicals in various potting mixes. As a helpful reminder to all greenthumbs, here are some specific risks to be mindful of:
1. Respiratory Irritation and Allergic Reactions: Potting mix often contains dust particles, fungal spores and other allergens that can irritate the respiratory system and lead to symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, throat irritation, difficulty breathing and skin rashes.
2. Microbial Infections:Potting mix can harbour harmful bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms, especially if it has been stored improperly. Inhaling these microorganisms can increase the risk of serious respiratory infections such as Aspergillosis and (more rarely) Legionnaires’ disease.
4. Chemical Exposure: Potting mix may contain fertilizers, pesticides, and other chemicals that can be harmful if inhaled. Continuous exposure can lead to symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, headaches, and in severe cases, organ damage.
5. Pregnancy Risks: Pregnant individuals should be especially cautious when handling potting mix, as some components may pose risks to fetal development if inhaled or absorbed through the skin.
The next meeting of the Ferny Grove Garden Club will be on Friday, 28th June, at 1 pm. The club meets in St Matthew’s Church Hall, Church Road, Mitchelton.
The guest speaker will be Mr Ian Therkelsen from the Stroke Foundation. The Stroke Foundation partners with the community to prevent stroke, save lives and enhance recovery. They do this through raising awareness, facilitating research and supporting stroke survivors. New members are welcome. For more information please telephone Elizabeth: 07 3851 056
To minimize these risks, wearing a mask rated for particulate matter (such as an N95) while handling potting mix is highly recommended. Additionally, working in a well-ventilated area, using gloves to minimize skin contact and washing hands thoroughly after handling potting mix will further reduce potential hazards.
Club Treasurer, Gavin Shanks, using recommended safety wear.
In June, our Club is holding an invitationonly event - Friendship Day. We therefore ask any new visitors to please join us on the first Thursday in July. You will find us at the Enoggera Memorial Hall from 9:30am. Entry is $5. For more information, please contact mitcheltongc@gmail.com.
Tips and Tricks for June Gardening
A update from the Stafford Gardening Club
With the cooler weather arriving in June, it is a good time to prepare new garden beds and to improve soil in existing ones. It is also a great time to repair or clean existing paving and retaining walls. If you need to transplant established plants, do it now, while they are relatively dormant. Re-pot Patio plants, if necessary. Remove those cool season weeds, that are flourishing now, before they can set seeds! Our bus trip to Kalbar was a great success. Members enjoyed
their visit to Mt Coot-tha for the joint show between the Qld Floral Art Society and the Qld Rose Society on Saturday 18th May.
The Stafford Garden Club members meet at the OES Hall cnr Kitchener Rd and Bohland St, Kedron at 9.30am. We enjoy morning tea, buy from the plant stall and admire the exhibits on the bench. Visitors and new members are welcome. Find us on Facebook at Stafford Garden Club Brisbane or email staffordgardenclub@gmail.com

An update from the Newmarket Bocce Club
On the 28th April, members of the Newmarket Bocce Club enjoyed a Presidents Cup lunch presentation, hosted by Tony Di Sipio (the President), together with his wife Sarina.
The President’s Cup is a culmination of at least two months of bocce. It started with 32 players and took the format of a knock out competition. The knock out compettion follows along the lines of, as players win their game, they progress along the winners track right up to the final. On the other hand, if you lost in the winners track, then you had another chance and progressed to the losers track. If you continued to win you progressed However, if you lost your game here, you were out. As you can imagine, it was a lengthy competition! The winner in the losers track was Mario De Marco. The grand final over two games was between Mario and Bruno. It was one game each, however Bruno won on total points scored. Mario was runner up.
A massive thank you goes out to Tony S. and Sarina for organising the event, all players and members agreed that it was fantastic! For more information about the Newmarket Bocce Club, contact Tony on 0418 731 423

THE FERNY REPORT
by Mark Furner M.P. State Member for Ferny Grove
$1,300 cost of living support
We’re providing households with $1,300 cost of living support. You won’t need to apply for this as it will be automatically applied to your household electricity bill.
From July 1 you’ll get $1,000 up front thanks to the Miles Government, plus an extra $300 from the Albanese Government. Seniors, pensioners, and concession card holders will be eligible $1,672 and eligible small businesses will also benefit from a jointly funded $650 electricity rebate.
This is only possible because we’re making the multinational mining companies pay their fair share and because we kept our energy assets in public hands.
Queensland’s Skills Strategy
In the biggest skills and training reform in almost a decade, the Miles Government has announced it will fund one million training places for Queenslanders who want to train, upskill, reskill, and pursue careers in the state’s priority industries.
The Good Jobs, Great Training: Queensland Skills Strategy 2024 – 2028 means more free and subsidised training, so Queenslanders can benefit from good jobs.
The strategy builds on our Free TAFE program to bring down costs for Queenslanders to get into better paid jobs or start a career in high-demand industries – such as health, social services, hospitality, clean energy, and more.
Free Apprenticeships are also available for Queenslanders

MAKING ENOGGERA WARD AN EVEN BETTER PLACE TO LIVE
An update from Cr
Andrew Wines, Enoggera Ward
Willmington Park
The newly upgraded Willmington Park is a fantastic addition to the neighbourhood. On Saturday 11th May, I hosted a community event and invited local families to join in for some music, face painting and of course, sausage sizzle. It was wonderful to see so many people come out and enjoy the beautiful new facilities. The upgrade included a new playground, new picnic facilities, new connecting pathways, resurfaced and added line markings to the existing halfcourt / rebound wall and upgrades to the existing picnic facilities. I am so proud to see this park being enjoyed by so many.
Fenwick Park
Parks are the heart of our neighbourhoods, offering a place for families to gather, children to play, and everyone to enjoy the outdoors. That‘s why it was so disheartening when police were called to Fenwick Park in the early hours of May 4th, 2024. Vandals had set fire to one of the best playgrounds in our district, reducing it to ashes.
When I visited the site, I was gutted to see the extent of the damage. The local children who cherish this park are simply heartbroken. It‘s estimated that removing and replacing the playground will cost upwards of $500,000. While we are committed to rebuilding, it will take some time.
In the meantime, the authorities are investigating the incident. If you have any information on the incident, please report this
Fenwick Park damage
to Police or Crime Stoppers. Seeing our beloved park in such a state is a stark reminder of how important it is to cherish and protect these vital community assets. We will come together to restore Fenwick Park, ensuring it remains a joyful space for our children and families.
Blackwood Street Artwork
I am excited to share that the final sculpture has been installed on Blackwood Street! You might have heard me mention this before, but now you can see four native animals climbing up the streetlights. This public art initiative is part of our ongoing efforts to make Blackwood Street more appealing and enjoyable for everyone. It’s a wonderful way to attract more visitors and support our local businesses.
Next time you’re on Blackwood Street, try to spot all four animals! Upgrading our community facilities is part of my ongoing commitment to improving our suburbs and making Enoggera Ward an even better place to live.

Breaking Down Barriers To Volunteering
Where would we be without our volunteers?
from your State Member for Everton TIM MANDER
They are the backbone of many Queensland communities; however, the State of Volunteering in Queensland 2024 Report has revealed a decline in volunteering under the PalaszczukMiles Government.
Last week the LNP has announced we will hold a Parliamentary Inquiry into Breaking Down Barriers to Volunteering, if elected in October. Here in Everton, we celebrate our volunteers every year and would love to see more done to support them.
Volunteers are the heart and soul of our communities, and their contributions won't go overlooked or undervalued under an LNP government.
We will empower our volunteers and our community organisations to continue their vital work in our communities. Supporting volunteering is a priority for us because it’s a priority for Queenslanders.
Student Leaders at Parliament
Over the last few weeks, it has been my pleasure to welcome the Senior School leaders from Everton Park State High, Albany Creek State High, Mt Maria College, Northside Christian College, and Prince of Peace Lutheran College to Parliament House.
It is very encouraging to meet these bright individuals and hear their views on some of the current issues facing the youth of today.
Opening of Wantima Water Harvesting Project
In September last year Cr Cath Tonks and I had the honour of breaking ground on Wantima Country Club’s Eco-friendly Water Harvesting Project which can hold 46 mega litres and provides a beautiful natural environment for local wildlife, and earlier this month we were invited back to open the completed project. It looks amazing and is a great addition to the club.
