Striking High For The Australia
Hockey Queensland is ecstatic to announce seven Queenslanders have been named in the condensed 22 man Hockeyroos Squad for 2022. One of which is a North Brisbane local, Renee Taylor from Everton Park!
After coming from a hockey obsessed family, it was unavoidable that Renee would fall in love with the sport. ‘I've been playing hockey my entire life. My whole family plays so I started when I was around 4 or 5 years old for our local club in Melbourne and haven't missed a season since,’ explains Renee. This dedication to the game resulted in the skilled 25 year old climbing up the ranks in the hockey world and making her debut for the Hockeyroos in 2015 against China. Following this, Renee went on to play in many tournaments around the world, including; the Olympic Games in 2020 (2021), World Cup in 2018, Commonwealth Games in 2018, and the World League in 2015 & 2017 (to name just a few - we could keep listing them!). With this experience, she has established herself as a key member of the side in either defence or midfield and finished third in the 2018 Hockeyroos Player of the Year voting. Furthermore, she went on to win the Commonwealth Games silver in 2018. Unfortunately, a wrist injury in late 2018 forced her to miss the Champions Trophy. Not just an incredible sportswoman, the former Everton Park State School and Mt Alvernia College student is also hitting goals off the field with her university studies. She is studying a double degree in Commerce and Laws (majoring in Accounting) at Curtin University in Western Australia. The Hockeyroos are based in Perth so she has been doing
all her study over there. Nevertheless, as Renee explains, her home club is never far from her thoughts. ‘Although I am now based in Perth and play for Meville Hockey Club, my home club is Commercial Hockey Club down at Newmarket. I always try to pull on the purple and be around the club when I am home,’ said Renee. Good luck Renee, you will makeAustralia proud!

A Tribute to Melva A.Welch OAM 11/12/35 - 31/01/22 from Samford Museum
Melva A Welch OAM Our local community of The Hills District and Samford Valley has lost an extraordinary lady who has given us a wealth of knowledge of our history. Melva Welch of Arana Hills sadly passed away on 31st January. During the past 30 years or so, local history enquirers visiting the Samford Museum, along with numerous other repositories of local and family history, have likely to have had their answers sourced from some of Melva’s extensive, and ever-growing collection of material she shared in the form of files and published books. Prior to focusing on researching and recording local history, Melva was the Chief Editor and Collator of the Hills Districts local paper the Adviser for 25 years. From Samford Museum’s earliest days Melva invited members to send an article for inclusion which helped us become known in a wider community. Melva kept her family life very separate from her research and
recording life. She spent countless hours and days in public record offices, seeking out details she needed for whatever her project was at the time. This was well before the days of internet and websites that now include Trove newspapers, so you can only imagine how time-consuming it would have been! She was brilliant at compiling information, however, she was a humble and reluctant public speaker - even at the launches of several publications published by Pine Rivers Shire Council and her own self- published work. Even for her major work, ‘Bergin Beauty’ she did not hold a launch in 2014. Museum members knew it deserved much more recognition and hosted a book signing afternoon for her – still no speeches, just conversations. The fruits of Melva’s volunteer research, recording and compiling will continue giving long into the future. May Melva A Welch OAM rest in the knowledge that she will not be forgotten and her name will be spoken often.
Can You Help Samford Museum?

Hitting Your Burnout? Here’s How to 180 That Issue
Burnout—the act of one reaching their all time low, ‘InBetween’ stage—a over and over again, every day. period used to turn It is a term that is no stranger to anyone who has worked in the healthcare industry for an extended period of time. Let alone an entire decade, like Kristy Anne, a local nurse, author, and behavioural scientist. In her fresh-to-press second book, 30 Day Self-Care Solution for Nurses, Kristy tackles how to reduce burnout and create healthier relationships. Because relationships often take a toll when a person is dealing with the throws of burnout. During her previous years of hospital shift work and parenting, with a lack of a support system holding her up, Kristy led herself into deep burnout territory. So far, she found herself discussing her existential crisis with a patient who was one boot through death’s door. Surely, stress and anxiety didn’t equal the ‘meaning of life’. Surely, she could reignite the spark within herself and leave her mental cage behind. Right? With a few mindset changes and a reopened heart to new possibilities, she nosedived into the worlds of therapy, meditation, and journaling, to name a few things she tried until Kristy was able to find the solution. Her spark. Every step, every known method, and every piece of advice she collected along the way is all documented by Kristy in the 30 Day Self-Care Solution. She reveals, ‘Writing played a massive part of my healing process… After seeing my colleagues and the state of healthcare recently I thought it best to put onto paper the practices I used that helped me to go from survival mode to start thriving in life again.’ One of such practices is what Kristy refers to as the

surviving into thriving and emotional pain into healing. Making use of this stage kickstarted Kristy’s self-healing j o u r n e y, a l l o w i n g her to discover what had really onset her burnout. ‘In order to get to the ‘Thriving’ stage of life, we just need Author of 30 Day Self-Care to go through the Solution, Kristy Anne often uncomfortable ‘InBetween’ phases, which is where we find healing’. Life is too short for us to be submerged in a sea of stress and an ocean of anxiety. It is, however, long enough to build the best, strongest versions of ourselves possible. This book will assist that process, rewiring our brains for 30 days until we can adopt the healthy habits it discusses. Or, as Kristy would say, until we can put on our own oxygen mask—as they do in aeroplane demonstrations—to endure what life throws at us. Kristy’s ultimate guide is available on Amazon via Kindle and Paperback, with the audiobook being recorded soon. Also, if you feel you could benefit from Kristy providing workshops in your business on managing and preventing workplace burnout, please feel free to reach out to her on Instagram or Facebook. Get Bowled Over at Enoggera's Hidden Oasis
Who would have thought, tucked away in the heart of Enoggera's industrial hub, lies a hidden oasis in the form of a modern bowls club?!
To date, the Enoggera Bowls Club has been a sporting hub only known to the locals within the area. It is nestled within the Pickering Place Complex behind the Enoggera Train station, and provides a unique bowling experience all within 15 minutes of Brisbane’s CBD. If you are looking for a lawn bowls club in Brisbane for pennant bowls, barefoot bowling or as an event venue, you can’t go past this place that provides the perfect mix of tradition and the new. Founded in 1939, the club once sat on the main street of Pickering Street - so not hard to miss! However, in 2018, to keep abreast with the times, the facility closed its doors and was completely rebuilt at its current location a few hundred metres from where it used to stand. The newly built Enoggera Bowls Club has been transformed to a state-of -the-art facility offering world class greens. Bowlers can also play rain, hail or shine, along with being protected from the harsh Queensland sun, thanks to a roofing system covering both greens. Night owls can also rejoice as the club boasts a high tech lighting system, allowing for bowls to be played morning and night. To keep bowlers hydrated and fed, Cafe 63 is attached to the club and offers a fully air conditioned place to enjoy the delicious food and drinks on offer. The committee are keen to increase membership as Club President Neil Walsh states, they are encouraging new players to come and get involved, even if they have never tried the sport before.
‘Unless someone comes down, sees us and has a go, they don’t know what it’s like; we have so much to offer here,’ said Neil. ‘The club is somewhat of a secret amongst locals, however we want this to change and are welcoming new members of all ages and abilities. The facilities are available to everyone within the local community and it has become a neighbourhood hub for families.’ Why not give the Club Pro Brad a call on 0477 443 255 for more details about Barefoot Bowls or the competitions on offer? Young Writers of The Future
In collaboration with the Young Writers Club at St. Williams Catholic Primary School, Echo News is delighted to publish a monthly 'Student Reporter Column' called Young Reporters of The Future. This month, we have a group of girls who are very passionate about the environment and would like to share some strategies with the community. Here is Peggy M, Stephanie B, and Erin McD’s Open Letter to our readers. Enjoy..
To our Community Residents,
We are writing this open letter to express our concern about the state of our environment. Our world is in danger and becoming more polluted. Climate change is already impacting us and how we live. Our planet is in desperate need for help. We wish to inform you of everyday routines you can change to make our world a better place for future generations. Here are a few tips for how you and your family can make a change: The first step is as easy as pie. Just ‘switch off when you step out!’ If you are leaving your bedroom to go to school, or any room in your house, turn off the lights and fans. This saves energy and money. If your room gets hot during the day, simply open the window. Fresh air is good for you! The reason we do this is so that we do not add to greenhouse gases and pollution. Another effortless way to help save our environment and stop pollution is to ‘turn scraps to soil.’ Composting is an easy yet effective way to help stop pollution. All you need to do is get an old ice cream container with a lid, or if you want to be fancy you can get a composting bin cheap from Bunnings. Whenever you eat delicious fruit or veggies, instead of throwing the scraps in the bin, compost them instead. You can also put coffee grinds and eggshells in the compost bin, just make sure you do not add meat. As well as composting another super, easy way to save our planet is knowing that ‘plastic packaging pollutes!’ This means not purchasing products that have an unnecessary amount of plastic packaging. However, if you cannot avoid it that is ok, just put the packaging in the recycling bin or take it to Coles or Woolworths for them to recycle. This helps because most of the plastics that would be going to landfill can be used to make useful things like park benches, bicycles, wheelchairs, and bridges for nature walks.
Digging into Soil Health
Peggy M, Stephanie B, and Erin McD have a message they would like to share with the community.
One final suggestion is to ‘demand second-hand’. The making of clothes uses plastic and sends out dangerous chemicals in the process. Buying things second or third hand will reduce these problems if we all work together. Clothes are not the only option, even though they are the first things that come to mind. You can also get a variety of second-hand items online such as bikes, desks, chairs, shoes and even monkey bars. Second-hand items normally sell for much lower prices than when they were bought new. Do not worry these items are normally in good condition. Sometimes people just grow out of them. Help us make the world a better place for future generations by remembering these four fantastic tips – Switch off when you step out, Turn scraps to soil, Plastic packaging pollutes and Demand second-hand. Yours sincerely, Erin, Peggy and Stephanie

Cakes With A Whole Lot Of Personality An update from the Brisbane North Cake Decorators Association What a fun afternoon we had at our February Meeting!
Maureen with some of her cake faces • Your local resident painting company • Servicing Brisbane’s northside for over 10yrs • All domestic & commercial works • Professional & friendly staff • Quality materials & tools used
We had a workshop by our guest demonstrator Maureen who showed us how to make many types of character faces. Maureen patiently guided us through the steps to creating faces and they all began to take on their own personality. It certainly provided several hours of fun. Hopefully we will all be more confident when asked to create one for a cake. It was lovely to see so many members attend and to see some new faces. Our next meeting will be on Saturday 19th March at the Arana Hills Community Centre, Dawson Parade, Arana Hills commencing at 1pm. We are a branch of the Queensland Cake Decorators Association and we aim to foster and improve the art of cake decorating and sugar craft by providing the opportunity for an exchange of ideas and skills. Each meeting we have some form of sharing, either a workshop or a demonstration by a member or guest. Check our Facebook page by searching Brisbane North Cake Decorators Association QCDA or email brisbanenorthcakedecorators@gmail.com for more information. New members are always welcome.

How to Network with the Kids in Tow
Life as a mum in business can be tough. Believe me I have four kids and I'll admit it, operating Echo News with them in tow can be tough sometimes! As any mother will resonate, challenges can range anywhere from working in the office with little ones at your feet, daycare calling to say the kids have a rash and need to be picked up early (dang, there goes my work day), to juggling the school runs and extra curricular activities around meetings. Oh, let's not forget the hurdle of trying to take a business call with ‘Mum, I'm hungry!’ howling from the back seat of the car! Another challenge is networking...or lack of it I might add. Let's face it, attending a business networking event with the kids in tow can come across as (a) unprofessional and (b) not much fun for you! Well, the good news for our local entrepreneurial mums is that you CAN network locally AND bring the kids! Mums in Business North Brisbane (MIB) is a new age movement, and is here to relieve that frustration and isolation that can be felt by our local female movers and shakers in business. These ladies are a group of ambitious and motivated Mums in Business that want to create a profitable business, and live life on their terms - motherhood is certainly not getting in their way of killing it in the business world. They differ from other networking communities as they are child friendly, so the mums are welcome to bring their children along to their events, allowing them to collaborate, learn, connect and grow, in a safe and welcoming environment with the opportunity with business growth potential. From sharing tips, strategies and advice on a range of topics from sales to social media, self care and planning, you are bound to learn a thing or two at their meetings.
Last months MIB Brisbane North meeting at White Horse Ranch in Albany Creek.
Networking events also include fabulous guest speakers where you can learn tips and tricks from other local business ladies. Or, you may want to promote your business in our community through being a speaker yourself! The organisation also provides supportive Facebook groups, to all women in business regardless of the industry they are in, or if they are new to business, or have been running their business for sometime. In addition, the group love supporting local businesses by hosting our events at local cafes, (check out the previous meeting in the pic above at White Horse Ranch in Albany Creek. Their next event is scheduled for Friday March 25th from 12-2pm at Tettos in Everton Park, where an Instagram training workshop will take place which promises to be fun and interactive. Everyone is welcome - including little ones! For more information visit www.facebook.com/groups/ mumsinbusinessnorthbrisbane

TAX MATTERS
from local experts TaxArana, 2 Glenlee St, Arana Hills
‘My Boss wants me to work under an ABN’
I have had clients seek advice recently as their employer has asked that they work under an ABN and not as an employee. It is important for both employers and employees to understand their obligations in this regard. There are a number of issues around doing this and the ATO has six factors that determine whether a person is an employee or contractor. Difference between employees and contractors by the Australian Taxation Office (ato.gov.au) It is against the law for a business to incorrectly treat their employee as contractors. Businesses that do this are illegally lowering their labour costs by: • Not meeting their tax and super obligations • Denying workers their employee entitlements If you own a business and want an employee to work under an ABN you need to be aware that if you still control their hours of work, where they work and so on they may still be considered an employee. The link below is a useful tool when determining whether a person is an employee or contractor. Myths and facts by Australian Taxation Office Whether you are running a business and wish to make an employee a contractor or are an employee being asked to become a contractor you need to get advice around this before you run the risk of incurring significant penalties.

Master The Art Of Slow Shopping
Volunteer Haberdashery Operations Manager Maryanne Hambrecht
We all love a bargain, but do you ever think about the true cost of a great deal?
Roz Fenson, Chief Executive of The Nest Community believes a clothing bargain that seems too good is unlikely to be an ethical purchase. ‘Fast fashion is highly unsustainable and works on the basis of cheap, poor quality items which are intended to be discarded when something new comes along,’ Ms Fenson said. Last year, the Monash Sustainable Development Institute published a report, Transitioning to a Circular Textile Economy in Australia, which found that an estimated 6000 kilograms of textiles and clothing go to landfill in Australia. Each year around 330 million garments are being thrown out within a year of purchase. Through its a haberdashery thrift shop, The Nest Community has diverted more than 107,000 metres of donated fabric from landfill, not to mention the hundreds of balls of yarn it receives in donations each year. Open from 10am-4pm Monday to Saturday, The Nest Community haberdashery is a haven for people who enjoy slow living and sustainable shopping. As you enter you’re met with a wall of colourful yarn, alongside a display of embroidery threads in every hue. The shelves are bursting with fabrics suitable for dressmaking, fancy dress, sleepwear, children’s clothing, and even upholstery, along with all the notions and embellishments you need. The shop is staffed with volunteers who are keen crafters with a wealth of knowledge to share about which fabrics are best for your project or how to tell real silk from lookalike textiles. ‘Our volunteers are women with an amazing range of experience in textile crafts. We have knitters and crocheters, as well as embroidery experts, quilters, and sewists who are trusted by pattern manufacturers to test new products,’ Ms Fenson said. ‘With around 90 women currently on our volunteer roster, you are almost guaranteed to find someone at The Nest with experience in whatever textile craft you are interested in and happy to share their skills.’ Volunteers also post fabulous finds in The Nest Community Haberdashery Facebook group, open to anyone interested in seeing what’s in store. So, before you head to a fast fashion boutique or add to your online cart, visit The Nest Community haberdashery at 720 South Pine Road! The Everton Echo, March 2022 - Page 19

Tales of the Terrific Trams
An update from Enoggera & Districts Historical Society Inc.
A Day To Remember
News and Views from a Tramway Muse by David Fryer
Samford Road, Enoggera - 1949
Here is a photo of the first day that trams started providing services to Enoggera – way back in 1949.
Does anyone out there remember catching a tram along the Enoggera line between 1949 and 1969 – the year when trams stopped operating in Brisbane? Anyone out there who was actually present at the event that first day back in 1949 when trams first came to Enoggera? If so, you may be interested in getting more involved with the Enoggera & Districts Historical Society Inc. (EDHS). We have our Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Sunday, 27th March. A great time to get involved. A display and refreshments will be on offer from 2pm, with the formal meeting starting at 3pm. The venue is the Enoggera Memorial Hall, with access via 36 Trundle Street. We have volunteers at the Enoggera Memorial Hall each Thursday from 9.30am to 1pm to host our public history display. April 13th, 1969. Joh Bjelke-Petersen is premier of Queensland; our troops are still fighting a lost cause in Vietnam; the Beatles are working on their final album, Abbey Road; and Cate Blanchett is just weeks away from her premier appearance – her birth.
More importantly, April 13th also marks the last tram to run on Brisbane streets. While it may have been a day to rejoice for Lord Mayor Clem Jones, it was a sad day for many Brisbane residents. To be fair, Mr Jones achieved so much for Brisbane in his fifteen years of office. He managed to develop a town plan, seal unpaved roads, improve drainage, and connect sewers to most of the city. Unfortunately, the town plan failed to save the Bellevue Hotel, Cloudlands, His Majesty’s Theatre and many other irreplaceable historic buildings. And his decision to abolish the trams was highly controversial at the time. While other cities like Lisbon, New Orleans and Melbourne celebrate their historic tramways today, we can only imagine an historic quarter in the CBD of Brisbane served by authentic trams. Fortunately, all is not lost. The Brisbane Tramway Museum has a fine collection of Clem Jones cast-offs and visitors will be able to ride a selection of authentic original trams on a special Commemoration Day on Saturday 9th Arpil from 3pm to 7.30pm at 20 Tramway St, Ferny Grove. The theme will be a PRE-EASTER FESTIVAL, with plenty exhibits and activities for children including: • Making an Easter Bunny Face for a tram. • Making an Easter Bunny Head with a hole for a photo-shoot. • An Easter Bonnet Competition for primary school children. Rotary will rustle up some sizzling snags and the museum will offer ice creams and soft drinks. There’ll also be a coffee wagon on duty and it’s rumoured that a high-profile chocolate manufacturer may attend. Entry prices: Adult - $15, Concession - $12, Children - $8, Family - $46. The Brisbane Tramway Museum is proudly supported by the Brisbane City Council. www.echo-news.com.au
A Social Connection
Digital technology can be liberating for people living with disability as it is a clear facilitator for social inclusion. However, it can also prove challenging when finding the solution that works best for you.
Since the early months of 2020, all Australians were forced to connect online whilst they were isolating as a means of getting around COVID-19 restrictions. However, many found it difficult to find the video conferencing tool best suited to their individual needs. Typically, a video communication tool’s accessibility comes from ensuring that its functionality works for everyone, including those using assistive technologies such as screen readers, magnification, and captions. Dr Manisha Amin, the chief strategist at not-for-profit social enterprise group, Centre for Inclusive Design, says it’s essential for everyone to be able to participate online as that has become our new normal. She says it’s less about why people living with disability should be connected, but rather, why shouldn’t they be? ‘We’ve all shifted so much of our lives to digital platforms much faster than most people would have ever anticipated. With that, there have been many challenges. But why should a community be excluded by the design of the internet? Historically, people with disability have been completely left out of the design process, leading to them being inherently excluded by the outcome.’ Zoom appears to be favoured by those living with disability as their video conferencing tool of choice. Ideal for those who have hearing or visual impairment, Zoom offers closed
www.echo-news.com.au
captioning options, automatic transcripts and keyboard shortcuts. It also allows for a tool called FX Sound Enhancer to be added in to allow a vocal boost option for high-quality audio. For those communicating with a large number of people at once, Slack is a hugely popular app for chat and video calls. Users claim its large bold buttons and resizable text are helpful for users with moderately low vision. One-to-one video calls, such as those offered by Apple FaceTime, are well-suited for those who communicate using sign language, or have other physical challenges. Apple’s Live Listen lets you fine-tune your Made for iPhone hearing aids to help you hear more clearly, while its Switch Control functionality is an assistive technology that lets you use built-in features as well as a joystick, or other adaptive devices to control what’s on your screen. Hard-of-hearing users are likely to benefit from the automatic captions that are available as an option in Google Meet. Manisha says that since the start of lockdown, Zoom and Microsoft have both rapidly improved their platforms with captioning for people who are deaf or hard of hearing. This has also benefited those who have problems with their internet, as their connection may jump when someone is talking but the captions keep them up to date. For the vision impaired community, it is about changing the way we react online, she says. ‘Many of us are guilty of using hand gestures instead of speaking on video calls, thumbs up being a great example. We have to remember that this is not an effective form of communication in many circumstances. For the blind/low vision community, sound is essential to ensure they get the same experience and information. Zoom has been good, as it almost forces one speaker at a time, preventing cognitive overload by having too many voices talking at once.’ Manisha says COVID-19 has taught us that if we design for people often left behind, we design for everyone. For this reason, it’s important to continue to ask the questions: who is left behind? and what is it in our design that is causing that? ‘From captioning and having the option to see people’s faces, to technology that is simple to use and doesn’t compromise privacy. Just by working with diverse communities of real users we can make the world of difference.‘ Submitted by Susanne Jones, Managing Director, Just Better Care Brisbane North and CBD The Everton Echo, March 2022 - Page 21

Described by Ian Skippen as: ‘Just that—one woman’s race through life. Flat out down the straights and no backing off on the corners. From the back streets of Kallangur to the racetrack and outback, in ‘Just Nat’ beats a huge heart and soul.’ The book’s synopsis: For self-professed bogan, Natalie Lowndes, life centred around her brother until a shocking tragedy. Teenaged Nat fled in the night with her horse Blue. What happened next led her into the path of an emerging racecar driver. A whirlwind romance, and Nat woke to her photo on the front pages. Jill Johnson took her under her wing, and as her husband cemented his legendary status on track, Nat's pleasure in mixing with the crowds saw her become a fan favourite. Natalie Lowndes tells stories from behind the scenes when fans were still allowed in the pits. Sooner than expected, kids arrived. On one stretch of road life accelerated, the other veered off-course. Tales from a mum, land-owner, horselover, friend, daughter, sister and a girl from the 'burbs who was thrust into a world of big talent, big money and big egos. Includes interviews with Helen Lowndes, Jill Johnson, Bev Brock and Alyson Faulkner. This official biography of Natalie Lowndes, former wife of V8 racing car champion, Craig Lowndes, has drawn wide commendations, with Betty Klimenko, Erebus Motorsport Super Cars racing team owner, saying ‘Absolutely amazing, so much so I am going to read it a second time.’ And others: ‘A great story that is told well. It was easy to read. Mostly I laughed but my heart broke a few times too. Very much recommend. It was written without pettiness or attention seeking,’ Sharon A. ‘Wowee. There’s a lot to take in. It’s so well written. One thing I’ve come to realise, she (and Craig Lowndes for that matter) have such an amazing ability to keep that smile on, no matter what’s happening inside, and the ability to smile and make others feel okay, even when they’re not,’ Peter. ‘Just Nat: Life in the Fast Lane with Natalie Lowndes’ is available from all good bookstores and libraries, and online at local publisher hawkeyebooks.com.au. You can meet Natalie Lowndes and Natalie Kile at an InConversation event at Caboolture Library on Saturday 19th March 1:30pm to 3pm.

The Echo Gecko
This month, columnist Richard Lancaster tells us ‘A Tale of Two Ships’
A Tale of Two Ships
This is a tale of two ships. Unlike the Charles Dickens novel `A Tale of Two Cities `, this story is true but it has all of the novel’s intrigue and drama. Both ships were to play important but quite different roles in our Australian and Queensland history, yet these two vessels were inextricably linked due to a number of similarities. However it must be recorded that the uncaring way in which these ships ended their days, reflects poorly on how we Australians preserve our history and value our icons. While other nations cherish and preserve their historic icons and revere their heroes, we seem uncertain of their importance to our culture and to our future as well. Are we too immature to appreciate their value? Both the magnificent Queensland government steam yacht Lucinda and the heavily armed gunboat HMQS Gayundah were built in 1884. Both were commissioned and paid for by the Queensland colonial government and both arrived at their home port of Brisbane in 1885. The Gayundah and her sister ship, Paluma, [translated from the local aboriginal meaning, Lightning and Thunder] were built to counter a perceived Imperial Russian invasion of the 60 year old colony of Queensland. The yacht Lucinda had a much more sedate workload. The QGSY Lucinda was initially used for government business. Colonial government cabinet meetings were held on board, carrying dignitaries and school children on excursions around Moreton Bay, as well as delivering mail along the Queensland coast. As the threatened invasion of Queensland failed to materialise, the Gayundah became the newly established Maritime Defence Forces training vessel and patrolled the coastline. Nothing much happened with the two ships during the next few years. Then in 1888, an incident occurred that was to rock the Queensland colonial government. Captain Henry TownleyWright of the Gayundah applied to the government for a year’s overseas leave with a years full pay to be given in advance. Rumour had it that he needed the money to pay off gambling debts. The leave was agreed to, but the salary in advance was not. The infuriated captain, with his ship’s massive guns loaded, sailed up the Brisbane River and threatened that unless the government paid him the money, he would fire on parliament. The police boarded the ship and the captain was arrested. The incident became known as the Gayundah Mutiny and the rebellious captain disappeared from history. In contrast, life progressed smoothly for the Lucinda. The government hosted functions on board the yacht and the Premier Sir Samuel Griffiths and his cabinet were regularly transported to Townsville via the vessel. Parties, soirees and regattas were regularly hosted on the yacht’s decks. Yet the Lucinda’s real claim to fame was soon to be realised. Federation was in the air. And in 1891, the Queensland premier, Sir Samuel Griffiths travelled to Sydney in the Lucinda. He invited the other state premiers on board and it was on the vessel that the Australian Constitution’s first draft was drawn www.echo-news.com.au
up. Eight years later, the Lucinda was again the location for the final draft of the Constitution to be completed. Among the many dignitaries to travel on the yacht were the Duke and Duchess of York, later to become King George V and Queen Mary. But as the 1920’s rolled around, the good times were running out for both the Lucinda and the Gayundah. In 1921, the Gayundah was decommissioned, sold and degraded to become a sand and gravel barge on the Brisbane River for the next 37 years. The Lucinda’s fate was no better. Two years later in 1923, that magnificent vessel was sold, only to become a coal carrier. She was to last only another 14 years, before being finally dumped as a breakwater on the shores of Bishop Island in 1937. The Gayundah’s fate was equally squalid. With worn out engines, she was stripped and sold to the Redcliffe Town Council as a breakwater for 400 pounds. The same amount that the government had sold the Lucinda for 21 years earlier. Little is now left of the Lucinda. Only a faint outline of the vessel can be seen in the sand at low tide. Over a four year period from 2014, a candle flickered briefly for HMQS Gayundah’s remains. The community unsuccessfully negotiated with both the State government and the Moreton Bay Regional Council to preserve the ship’s remains for posterity. Sadly only the rusted skeletal outline of this iconic vessel remain. Once again, Queensland ignored an opportunity to preserve our glorious historic past. Fabulous Field Trips Just Around the Corner An update from the Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club
In order to have rough gemstone material to work on in our workshop, we have regular field trips during the year to collect material for cutting and polishing.
We have not commenced our schedule of field trips for 2022 as generally we wait until the weather is cooler. This generally commences around May, where we have a field trip to Lismore where Labradorite is found. Whilst on this trip, we generally visit the Lismore Gem show which is one of the larger shows in the country. As far as local field trips are concerned, we try to visit such places as Redcliffe for agate, Tweed Valley for agate and chalcedony, Chinchilla and Miles for petrified wood - alldepending on the local conditions at the time. Redcliffe depends on the tides and Tweed valley requires a flood to flush out more agate and chalcedony. We usually go to Chinchilla and Miles in the winter time when it is cooler to dig. Most members work on the finds they bring home from field trips in our workshop. Whilst on the subject of Gem Shows, the National Gem Show is to be held in Queensland next year over the Easter long weekend. The Show is to be held at the Dayboro Showgrounds. National Gem Shows are held in a different state each year and next year is Queensland’s turn to hold it. More on the National Gem Show as it draws closer. The Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club has its clubrooms located at 46 Ferneydell Street, Ashgrove and is open every Thursday from 9am to noon for cutting and polishing rocks and from noon to 3pm for silverwork. It is also open on Saturday from 1pm to 4pm. The Club caters for rock enthusiasts in the North Western area of Brisbane. If you feel this type of hobby interests, you come along and inspect our workshop where we cut and polish rocks and gemstones. Contact Lloyd on 3351 2093 or John 3351 1038 for further information.

Learn About Medicine in the Garden An update from the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club
The Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club plans to meet at the Enoggera Memorial Hall in Trundle Street on Thursday, 7th April, unless Covid-19 conditions determine otherwise.
The guest speaker, Debbie Aitcheson, who was engaged for the cancelled February meeting, is happy to give her talk on Medicine from the Garden then. Technically, autumn begins this month (March), but at times there is still a lot of humidity. Once it was the golden rule to plant sweet pea seeds on St. Patrick's Day, but these days it is better to wait until much later in the month. To avoid your sweet pea plants being destroyed by cutworm, push the cardboard tube from a toilet roll into the soil leaving about 2 cm above the ground and plant the seed inside the tube. (This method can be used for other big seeds.) The cardboard barrier protects the base of the plant and disintegrates in time. March is the month to plant strawberry runners and cuttings from herbs such as lavender and rosemary. If your garden soil needs enriching for spring annuals, now is the time to do it so it will be ready for seedlings to be planted by the end of April. This club meets on the first Thursday of the calendar month except January. Meetings commence after morning tea which is served at 9.45 am. Visitors and new members are most welcome. The hall is close to public transport and accessible by wheelchair. For more information please phone the President, Pat, on 3356 1256.

We finish our meetings by 9pm and have short break in the middle. If you can’t find us, please ask on the front reception desk or phone 0402 834 182. Please note, Covid rules and requirements are adhered to all times. Our Agenda for our meetings is varied. Learn how to give a speech, provide positive and constructive feedback to others, run a meeting and speak impromptu. There is a raft of items to enjoy and learn from. Guests are free and there is no obligation to participate or to join the Club. Western Suburbs is a very welcoming place for all ages, all backgrounds and all abilities. We understand nerves and trepidation. We have all been there! There is a reason our Club has been running for 50 years this year. We must be doing something right. Come and see for yourself. At the very least, it’s a fun way to spend a Tuesday evening. What have you got to lose? Our next meetings in March are: Tuesday 15th and Tuesday 29th March. THE FERNY REPORT by Mark Furner M.P.
State Member for Ferny Grove $100,000 community grants on offer!
Round 113 of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund (GCBF), aka the super round, is now open for not-for-profit and community groups and will close 31 March 2022. In the past six years local sporting groups and other not-forprofits in the Ferny Grove Electorate have shared in over a million dollars-worth of GCBF grants. Unlike other rounds of the GCBF that have grants of up to $35,000 on offer, this ‘super round’ is providing grants of up to $100,000. I want our local community organisations to ‘think big’ and apply for large projects that will make a real difference. So, if you belong to a local community group, please consider putting in a submission to the inaugural super round! For more information visit the GCBF website here: https:// www.justice.qld.gov.au/initiatives/community-grants
E-Scooter reforms: speeds slashed, new fines and parking changes
Roads and footpaths will be safer in Queensland with the new measures to better regulate e-scooters. E-Scooters have exploded in popularity recently, so we know they aren’t going to disappear. As a result, the Palaszczuk Government has last month announced stronger laws like lower speeds on footpaths, mandated safety measures, a safety education campaign and clearer signage and markings would be part of a suite of new actions to help ensure e-scooter riders,
Cr Andrew Wines and I had a very productive meeting recently to discuss local projects where our two levels of government can work together to deliver for our community. cyclists, motorists, and pedestrians can safely share spaces. The government has come up with these new laws after consultations with industry and user groups, disability advocates, health, police and government experts to better understand what needs to be done to make e-scooters safer for people riding them and those around them. Most significantly, the reforms will see speed limits slashed on footpaths to 12 kilometres an hour – so it’s important every e-scooter user needs to slow down. The State Government will also work with Brisbane City Council and other Local Government Authorities on making sure signs and markings make it clear where e-scooters can and can’t be ridden and where they can and can’t be parked.

A Little Writer with Big Success
Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s Catman—the pento-paper brainchild of local 12-year-old author, Amiel Haddy.
Yes, you heard that right. We have a 12-year-old author in our community! A book writer since the ripe age of 9, Amiel has successfully published 6 children’s books—all of which are centered around the notorious superhero Catman and his thrilling adventures. Although he is really an 8-year-old boy named Alex, ‘Catman’ spends this book series fighting off evil with his supernatural powers of flight, super-speed, retractable claws, and a super-sonic purr. And how does Alex maintain this wild and wonderful double life? A magic, shapeshifting ring, of course! For as long as Amiel can remember, he’s always had an interest in books. But his calling for writing didn’t come until he was 9 and losing himself in Andy Griffiths’ world-renowned Treehouse series. He became so inspired that, in 2018, Amiel won first prize in an Andry Griffiths/ Dymock’s Books national writing competition. Amiel’s parents are super-duper proud of their son’s love for writing. His mum, Oriana, helped him publish and sell his books. Amiel boasts, ‘Mum thought I would lose interest after writing the first book, but I haven’t yet!’ Besides from reading and writing, Amiel is an avid videogamer, Lego-builder, and content creator on his YouTube Channel, TheGamingComputer_26. As such, Amiel’s big dreams for the future include becoming a famous author— unsurprisingly!—but also a famous streamer. Right now, the young teenager is continuing to shoot for the stars with his more mature fantasy novel in the making!

Amiel with his book series For anyone interested in checking out Amiel’s awesome collection, head to his Mum’s Commerce profile on FaceBook Marketplace: Oriana M Haddy. Books 1-6 come as an $18 set in A5, or $30 in A4, with individual copies selling fast at only $3. Copies can be picked up or posted from Albany Creek, but deliveries are currently unavailable. However, everyone beware! Amiel warns you all to buckle in for a rollercoaster-ride of reading fun. As the worlds of good and evil collide, which side do you think will win? Can Catman save the day after all?
