A Bubble of Peace for the Veteran Community

Since opening their doors in March, the Veteran’s Lounge at Alderley has provided a safe environment for veterans and their families to relax with a cuppa or cold drink, read the paper, watch TV, use the computers or just rest and recuperate.

This wonderful relaxing space, with plenty of room for the kids, is free from distractions, such as pokies and alcohol, to allow veterans and spouses to draw on the experience of others who have navigated the challenges of contemporary military life. This well equipped lounge (complete with wifi!) aims to address the alarming high rate of mental illness, homelessness and suicide amongst the veteran community. Veterans and their families can come together with Gaythorne Legacy Care Group Volunteers over a brew - a combined 17,500 years of lived military experience to share. All the Lounge asks for in return is a gold coin donation for tea or coffee The Lounge is co-located with the Veterans OP Shop at 29 Samford Road Alderley, that opened its doors on the 16th March 2021. The opening night was a great success and attracted Senior Military Officers from the Army, Navy and Airforce. They came from as far away as Canberra and across the South East QLD area. In addition, there were Federal, State and Local Government representatives and members from Ex-Service Organizations. On the night, local Salvation Army Officers provided a blessing and welcome to country prior to the opening ceremony. The founder of Wounded Heroes Australia Mr. Jim Shapcott and their Patron LTGEN Greg Bilton AO CSC cut the ribbon to officially open The Veterans Lounge. The Veterans Lounge reflects the ‘Wounded Heroes’

Veterans Families are free to use the facility and play a board game or two organisations current objectives to assist our Veterans and their families in immediate financial crisis. Wounded Heroes are first responders to provide veterans and their families’ with critical financial and housing assistance. The organisation can navigate to the other community services that are readily available, without duplication. In doing so, they continue their 15 year tradition of Compassion, Hope and Purpose. Regular community activities also take place at the Veteran’s Lounge including Board Game Days, Card Club Days, Weekly Morning Teas, Craft Days, Book Club, ‘Tell Your Story’ day and a monthly Sausage Sizzle. Veterans and their families are welcome to join in. To find out more, or to register for these activities visit www. facebook.com/whvetlounge or call the Manager, Peter, on 0401 625 353. The Veterans Lounge is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 4pm and Saturday from 9am to 1pm.

Did you know that walking for an average of 30 minutes or more a day can lower the risk of heart disease, stroke by 35% and Type 2 diabetes by 40%? If you are searching for a way to improve your health, and finding the gyms a bit too intimidating, just walking can be a great place to start. If you are looking for a friendly group to join, the Heart Foundations Westfield Chermside Walking Group is a great option. This friendly group has been meeting for over two years now and is open to anyone, however, it is particularly popular with the 60yrs - 80yrs age groups. Walkers come from all over the northside to enjoy both the physical and social aspects of group walking. The group walks inside the centre before most shops are open so parking is a breeze. The group meets on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 7.30am. They meet at the northern end of the shopping centre near Healthyworld Pharmacy. Christmas Play in the Pipeline Christmas just wouldn't be the same without a trip to the theatre to watch a festive play and lucky for us, Growl Theatre has a show stopper in store for the local community.

The 2020 production, ‘Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley’ produced by this local theatre group, delighted audiences with its romance, intrigue, and celebration of the Darcys’ first family Christmas at Pemberley. Now the group are excited to present in 2021 a charming companion piece, ‘The Wickhams: Christmas at Pemberley’ by Lauren Gunderson and Margot Melcon, directed by Julie Bray. Synopsis: As the events of Miss Bennet unfold upstairs at Pemberley, the servants below stairs find themselves in the midst of a different holiday scandal. An unwelcome visitor has arrived, disrupting holiday preparations and sowing discord among Pemberley’s residents—George Wickham. As the festivities spiral into chaos, a secreted letter may be the key to resolving old disputes and new misunderstandings. Warm and sensational, Gunderson and Melcon’s second Austen adaptation delves into class, privilege, family and forgiveness, for an instant holiday classic. The play takes place on stage from the 19th November to the 4th December at Windsor School of Arts, 381 Lutwyche Road, Windsor. Remembering the Keperra Golf Club Enoggera Memorial Hall Scores New Real Estate An update from the Enoggera and Districts Sponsor Historical Association

Members of the community are warmly invited to view the Society’s historical display and records each Thursday at the Enoggera Memorial Hall in Wardell Street between 9.30am and 1pm.

And it goes without saying – the hall is a fascinating source of history in itself! In 1916 the state government granted the old and original Enoggera State School building (then at present day South Pine Road) for use as a School of Arts. This was used on site for a short period before being moved in 1917 to its present site at the intersection of Wardell and Trundle Streets. This original small building still remains at the southern rear end, and was incorporated into the design when construction commenced on the larger and current Enoggera Memorial Hall – opened in 1925. The site was used for many years as a meeting place and social outlet for returned service men, a library and also a Children’s Welfare Clinic attended by a nurse. In 1989 the Enoggera Districts Memorial Hall Association Inc. was formed to manage and maintain the hall with the local Returned Services League (RSL) branch moving its base to the Gaythorne RSL on Samford Road. The original Memorial Stone and Honour Boards remain at the hall. During the construction of the The Enoggera Memorial Hall Enoggera rail flyover in the 1990s, it was only through an intense community campaign that the hall was saved from destruction or removal. Does anyone out there have photos and memories from visiting the Enoggera Memorial Hall over the years? Was it where you had a 21st, engagement party, Wedding Reception or similar? We’d love to hear from you. Visit our Facebook page or email enoggerahistory@gmail.com Or even drop in to see our Society volunteers any Thursday morning! Take care, everyone, Andrew McMicking - President

Remember To Keep Your Pet Hydrated

Summer is almost here and it is important to keep your pet hydrated. Dehydration can be very dangerous for pets during the hot weather. Make sure your pets always have access to plenty of fresh water and they know where to find their water bowls around the house and property. Adding ice cubes to their bowls can be a special treat. Etienne, Simon and Drew from Harcourts Solutions

Northern suburbs real estate specialists, Whitehead & Crump from Harcourts Solutions, are the latest business to sign on with the Keperra Country Golf Club.

Simon Whitehead and Drew Crump, who between them have more than three decades of real estate experience and long-term connections with the Hills community, have been welcomed as a Major Club sponsor. “We had been looking for an opportunity to sponsor something in the community for quite a while,” Drew Crump said. “Simon and I live in the district and we’ve both got great memories associated with the Keperra golf course, so the choice was a bit of a no-brainer. ‘I grew up in the Hills near the course and Simon, from the age of 17, worked in real estate with his dad whose business was in Arana Hills and who has been a member of the Keperra Golf Club for a long time. ‘This new partnership is something that really excites us. The Club has a lot of fantastic programs for juniors and there are many great pathways that lead off golf. ‘Golf is also such a great game to play for your health and to unwind. Simon and I try to get out on the course once a month on a Friday afternoon or early morning for a hit and we’re looking forward to becoming more involved in the Club through our sponsorship.’ Whitehead & Crump is one of 14 businesses to partner with the Keperra Golf Club in response to its 2021 drive to connect with and support local enterprises. Club General Manager Gavin Lawrence said the success of the sponsorship project was a great achievement which reflected both the value the community places on the game of golf and the professional regard held for the Club. ‘We have been buoyed by the overwhelming interest we received from both existing and new sponsors to partnership opportunities,’ he said. ‘Whitehead & Crump round out our line-up perfectly and we’re excited to get busy in supporting them. ‘Simon and Drew have always had some involvement at Keperra and we’re delighted to cement that relationship with this new partnership.’ www.echo-news.com.au

A Bowlsy Move for Gaythorne Bowls Club

Last month’s article was about boring black bowls, but this month is anything but boring.

A talented new chef, Brent Carroll, with his exciting new menu, is now offering great dine-in food on Friday and Saturday evenings at Gaythorne Bowls Club, 18 Prospect Road, Gaythorne. (The only exceptions being those nights when the club’s facilities have been fully booked for a private function.) Brent has many years of experience in the catering and hospitality industry, and has operated in many well known function centres across Brisbane and also in other areas throughout Queensland. Gaythorne Bowls Club has been without a talented chef for some time now and the club welcomes Brent and his staff. The club would also like to invite back all those regulars who used to come and dine at the club on previous times - your wallet will also like his prices! Gaythorne Bowls Club has an old world charm and a relaxed atmosphere. New visitors to the club are also very welcome to come and see what the club and the new chef have to offer. I am sure you will have a great night out and become a regular diner. Have you been thinking about somewhere different to go on a Friday evening to unwind after another big week in the office or workshop? How about coming over to Gaythorne Bowls Club? There are no crowds of people to contend with and there is ample parking either on the street or in the carpark behind the club. And a last thought - imagine having a nice cold drink and / or a meal while sitting on one of the many outdoor seats overlooking the greens, relaxing and talking to your family and friends. A great way to recharge your battery ready for the weekend. So, see you soon at the club. Kev Hass, For Gaythorne Bowls Club

All our members have done the right thing - masked up, kept their distance, and therefore avoided COVID-19. The club acknowledged 23 of our long term members, who were presented with a Certificate of Appreciation. Christmas is nearly upon us and we can only hope the borders are open so we may see our loved ones over the festive season. Hopefully, in the New Year, we will be able to continue our monthly bus trips. We would love you to join us on a Monday for a concert OR Tuesday and Friday for indoor bowls. A Fund To Feed The Community Essential meal delivery service Mitchelton Meals on Wheels (MMOW) has weathered many a storm over its 49 year existence, and the onset of COVID-19, has definitely brought its own set of challenges. This vital service, that delivers meals to the aged and disabled in the community has had to make drastic modifications to a multitude of its systems. One of which is the new ‘no handling of money’ policy. Pre-COVID, delivery drivers would receive reimbursement each time they carried out a delivery, however, when COVID hit, reimbursement was temporarily suspended. The volunteers were surveyed to see how they would like their money disbursed going forwards and the overwhelming consensus was to use the money to finance meals for tthose in need within our local community. This, in turn, has led to the establishment of the Mitchelton Meals on Wheels Volunteer Community Benefit Fund (VCBF) gifted by the organisation’s caring volunteers. To date, the VCBF has contributed to three other local community organisations’ aspirations of being able to help out those on our doorstep. The Breakfast Group who meet on a Wednesday at Sid Loder Park, Mitchelton is one of them. The group is run by volunteers from a local church who rely on donations for support in order to serve the vulnerable within our society. The group was discovered by one of MMOW's volunteers a few years back whilst out on her delivery run. To date, the Breakfast Group have received a mammoth 60 meals, as well as 36 soups! A second community organisation to receive aid from the VCBF fund is Picabeen Community Centre. Picabeen is a neighbouring community association whose aim is to

www.echo-news.com.au

encourage local residents to take an active part in promoting awareness of community issues and available services. The centre holds BBQ’s for the vulnerable members of our local district and provides food parcels for the very needy on a regular basis. Through the VCBF fund, MMOW have been able to compound their efforts by keeping their freezer stocked with frozen meals. So far, the VCBF has generously supplied 120 meals to Picabeen. The final group to benefit from the fund is the Mitchie Day Group. The group have been meeting socially for many years in the district and offer MMOW meal support to anyone they are aware of who could be in need of assistance. Please remember to support this essential delivery service. We all need to be attuned to the needs of those in the community – individuals, families, groups etc who justly qualify to be included as beneficiaries for free meals, and so make a positive Picabeen Centre Manager, Jillian impact in our local Warren stocking up their fridge up area. with MMOW's meal donations

A Sweet Club for Cake Decorators

An update from the Brisbane North Cake decorators club

At the October meeting of the Brisbane North Cake decorators club, members were divided into two groups. One group had a lot of fun learning how to ganache a small cake, which they all then took home to their families. It was great to see the new members learning some new skills. The other group worked on completing a replica two tier 1980’s wedding cake, complete with all the fine detail on the sides. This is for the clubs display at their 40th Anniversary lunch at Parliament House on 24th October. It brought back many memories for those in the group who have been decorating since then. The upcoming November meeting has been changed to Monday night on the 22nd November at the Aspley Hotel at 6.30pm for our annual Christmas get together. For members, it seems like no time since they celebrated last year. Don’t forget your Secret Santa gift. The tremendous cake The Brisbane North Cake destined for the clubs decorators are a branch of display at their 40th the Qld Cake Decorators Anniversary lunch at Association and meet on the Parliament House

third Saturday of each month at the Arana Hills Community centre, 291 Dawson Parade Arana Hills, commencing at 1pm. The club tries to keep the business side of the meeting as short as possible so they can concentrate on learning new skills and refining old ones with workshops and demonstrations. Check out their Facebook page by searching Brisbane North Cake Decorators Association QCDA for more information.

PROPERTY GUIDE Needless to say the property market is red hot at the moment. With this in mind, Echo News is delighted to bring our all new monthly North West Brisbane Property Guide to our newspapers. Read on to discover tips and tricks to help sell your home, maximise return and get ready for market.

Summer Selling Checklist

If you want to sell your house this year, there are plenty of jobs you can cross off your list to help you get ready for market and maximise your sale price. This checklist will help you take the first critical steps towards being prepared to sell your home. 1. Research the market The property market can be a fickle beast, so it’s important to have a good understanding of what’s happening in your area before you list your house for sale. One of the easiest ways to get a handle on your local market is to observe the market for a minimum of six to eight weeks. Once you’ve seen properties come on the market and hopefully selling in that period, it will give you an idea of what those properties are selling for and what you can afford to buy. 2. Inspect properties in your neighbourhood While browsing online will give you some good insight, you’ll also want to get out to physically inspect properties so you can see how your home compares with the stock available to buyers.

3. Get a pest and building inspection A pest and building inspection report will highlight any major issues with your property and give you the option to deal with these before you start your sales campaign. 4. Clean and declutter Decluttering comes hand-in-hand with moving house, so if you’re thinking seriously about selling there’s no better prompt to get rid of unwanted belongings. 5. Create a fabulous first impression Great street appeal is key to selling your home. Those first impressions are lasting impressions. You might like to use the holiday break to wrangle an unruly garden into submission, repair fences or front gates or paint the front door. 6. Get a head start on paperwork You can also use the holidays to read through agent contracts, check in with your local council for any requirements like pool compliance or certificates, and to contact solicitors or conveyancers for quotes on preparing a sales contract.

Thinking of selling? Call your most trusted agent.

PROPERTY GUIDE

Renovating for a Return

Want to fix up the home before selling but don’t want to break the bank? Or maybe you are looking to get into the ‘House Flipping’ game and maximise your return on investment. Generally, there is a lot of money that can be made from buying undervalued properties, renovating them and then selling them on at a profit. However, overspending is just one of the things that can eat into your profit. Here are a few tips from founder of ‘Renovating for Profit’ renovating expert, Cherie Barber, on how to budget for a renovation project and maximise your return on investment. SPEND WISELY Don’t spend any more than 10% of the current property value on an entire cosmetic renovation. This includes all labour, fixtures, materials and fittings – everything. BREAK IT DOWN First, break down your budget room-by-room and then job-byjob. This makes it more manageable and you’ll be less likely to overspend this way. FIRST IMPRESSIONS COUNT When it comes to selling your house, first impressions are everything. Buyers are notoriously harsh judges and are often spoilt for choice. That’s why street appeal is so critical, and a quick exterior renovation can add considerable value to your home. AFFORDABLE UPDATES Rather than ripping out kitchens and bathrooms and starting fresh, working with what you’ve got. Affordable updates like a fresh coat of paint, new tapware, bench tops or vanities

can make a big difference in these spaces and can save you a fortune. BUDGET FLOORING IDEAS Fresh flooring will work wonders for a home and with so many affordable options on the market it really is a no-brainer when renovating. If you’re not lucky enough to find floorboards under the carpet you rip up, opt for a timber laminate flooring to save money and still get the desired finish. REMEMBER THE 20% RULE Assuming you’re doing a full renovation of your bathroom and kitchen, a good rule of thumb is to allow around 20% of the total renovation budget for each. So, for a $500,000 home you should spend no more than $10,000 on each. When creating these plans and strategies don’t forget, cheap doesn’t necessarily mean poor quality. It just shows you’re clever about finding the very best deal at every single step of the renovations. HAVE A CONTINGENCY PLAN Always factor in a budget contingency of 5∞ to 10% for any unforeseen costs. Planning is essential with profit in mind. A clear and realistic outlook on the project you are committing to, pre-renovation, will help you cope better during the process of the renovation.

Quick Tip: If you are renovating to make a small house look bigger, an inexpensive and beautiful way of achieving that goal is to use mirrors.

TAX MATTERS

from local experts TaxArana, 2 Glenlee St, Arana Hills There is often confusion for those with Investment properties when it comes to repairs and maintenance and what can be claimed and what must be depreciated over time. If you are replacing something that is worn out, damaged or broken as a result of renting your property, this is likely to be a repair and can be allocated as repairs and maintenance. If you are preventing or fixing deterioration of an item that has occurred while renting your property, again this may be considered as maintenance, and can be claimed as repair and maintenance. However, if you are repairing damage that existed when the property was bought, this is regarded as a initial repair. It should be claimed as capital works or capital allowances, meaning they cannot be claimed in full in the year the expense was incurred, they must be depreciated over a period of time. The same principle applies if you are installing a new appliance such as a dishwasher, floor or window coverings. Capital works is used to describe certain construction expenditure used to produce income, for example building and construction cost, cost of altering a building, major renovations to a room etc. These items are claimable at a rate of 2.5% over 40 years. Capital allowances are allowed for what are depreciable assets which do not form part of the premises that is not likely to be permanent and are expected to be replaced within a relatively short period of time. Examples include; carpet, curtains, appliances etc. For each of these assets you are able to claim a deduction for the decline in value using either the effective life method or your own reasonable estimate of effective life.

Make Someone’s Christmas with Your Hamper An update from Picabeen Community Centre

Amidst a global pandemic, uncertainty appears to be more prevalent in our world than ever before. As human beings, we crave security and certainty. Our brains are constantly making predictions about what we are feeling, what we see, and what possible threats there are to our safety. Our ability to calm ourselves down is often influenced by the threat disappearing or knowing what is going to happen next. This pandemic is showing us that the threat is yet to disappear. Life can change very suddenly, and unpredictably! This can leave us feeling powerless. We want a sense of control over our lives. Remember, our brains are not used to this! Many of us are finding ourselves and other people behaving in unpleasant ways. The goal right now isn’t to like each other, it’s to love each other. We are all going through a lot. Let’s empathise and connect. It’s much more likely to get us through. For many, Christmas is a difficult time. Especially in a pandemic. Each year, Picabeen gives Christmas hampers to members of our community who are in need. We cordially invite you to please consider donating items for our hampers. Remember to hold on. You’ve got this! Contact Love Madison (Student at Picabeen Community Centre) on 3354 2555 or drop off at 22 Hoben Street, Mitchelton. The Change Room Op Shop Spring is in full bloom and so is Picabeen's Change Room Op Shop! We are so grateful for the amazing quality of preloved clothes and accessories that this wonderful community donates. Our little shop is bursting with bright summery fashion for all the family at super affordable prices. When you visit, be sure to check our bargain rack out front ($1-$3), as well as our regular racks ($6 and under) and our $2 baskets!

www.echo-news.com.au

Volunteers are getting into the festive spirit at The Change Room Op Shop! Our Blue Label range of fashions are for that extra special outfit, but most items are still under $15! We look forward to welcoming you soon at Picabeen Change Room- your Little Op Shop with a Big Heart - 65 Gilston Street, Keperra. The shop is open Monday to Friday from 9am-4pm and Saturday from 10am to 1pm.

Find Your Community’s Happy Place at The Coffee Club

The Coffee Club has become the center of community in the North-West Brisbane suburbs of Stafford, Everton Park, Everton Hills, and Brookside. Operated by locals who are dedicated to providing excellent, personalised service to their local community, The Coffee Club is the perfect café to choose if you’re craving quality connection. ‘We are a store at the heart of the community...we love being the easy place for mums to come on school runs and local businesses to have meetings. Our community can rely on us to provide the best for whatever they need,’ said Liam Farimbella, Store Leader at The Coffee Club Everton Hills. Supported by buzzing regulars and friendly staff, The Coffee Club stores in the four North West Brisbane suburbs have become hubs where locals can rely on team members to know who they are and welcome them into a family friendly space. Stafford regulars, Michael and Grace, visit in store almost daily since Terry and Vanessa took over. They have truly become family, sharing their day-to-day and milestones with the team at The Coffee Club. Michael and Grace even celebrated their 50th anniversary right in store with Terry and Vanessa. ‘We had mentioned a few days before that we were coming in with friends to celebrate, as we would every other day, and Vanessa surprised us with a beautiful set up! She went that extra mile to make my wife and I feel special, and that’s why we love it here,’ said Michael, a regular at The Coffee Club Stafford. Team members are proud to be part of creating memories for customers, just as our owners are proudly hiring within the local community, helping youth to harness skills that will set them up in future under the supervision of experienced leaders. ‘We love to grow our own talent at The Coffee Club Brookside,

we’re a place where young kids can learn new skills, and we’re passionate about giving quality training to support them,’ said Rodney Troian, Owner of The Coffee Club Brookside. ‘My background in hospitality has helped me understand exactly what customers expect from good service. I’ve been able to pass this knowledge onto my team so that no matter who on our team is serving our locals, they always have the best experience,’ said Romy, owner of The Coffee Club Everton Park. ‘We really are just a local family, my wife and I run The Coffee Club locally, our staff and customers know each other, and we even have our 14-year-old twins work weekends. We love this community and its people,’ said Terry Phan, Owner of The Coffee Club Stafford. THE FERNY REPORT by Mark Furner M.P.

State Member for Ferny Grove

Last month I had the great honour of presenting Mr Mogridge with his certificate recognising his 50 years of service to our community as a Justice of the Peace (JP). 50 years is an amazing effort. Our JPs are not paid for their services, and they undertake special responsibilities such as signing documents that require a qualified witness and hearing certain types of court matters. Their services include witnessing and certifying routine legal documents including wills, affidavits, statutory declarations and passport applications. By performing these services, they allow lawyers and the courts to concentrate on complex legal matters. Thank you to Mr Mogridge and all our volunteers who make up our largest group of volunteers in the state. If you require the services of a JP simply search online for ‘JP near me’. If you are a JP and would like to find out if you are eligible for recognition, please contact my office at ferny.grove@ parliament.qld.gov.au. The time to be vaccinated is now Queensland will be opening its borders to fully vaccinated arrivals on December 17. I, along with other members of cabinet have been travelling across Queensland to encourage all Queenslanders to protect themselves, their loved ones, and our community by getting vaccinated ASAP.

Page 24 - November 2021, The Everton Echo

Presenting Mr Mogridge with his 50 years of service certificate. When our borders open, the risks of contracting the Delta variant increase. Vaccinations greatly reduce, but do not eliminate, the likelihood of catching COVID and passing it on to others. Most importantly, the Doherty Institute reports that vaccinated people are 90% less likely to suffer serious complications or death from becoming infected. Pop up clinics, government vaccination centres, local GPs and pharmacies all have plenty of vaccine supplies and are ready to protect you and your family. Call 13 426 843 if you are unsure where to go to get vaccinated. Get vaccinated today. Do not delay.

Using Your Green Thumb For Good Health By Susanne Jones, Just Better Care Brisbane North and CBD

There are few things in life more satisfying than filling your plate with items you have grown in your own garden. Aside from the enjoyment of gardening, research shows there are numerous physical and psychological benefits from working in the garden, including improved endurance, strength, flexibility, mobility and general wellbeing. A pot or two is all that’s needed to create an interesting and edible garden. Which space is best? The beauty of an edible garden is that they don’t require a significant amount of space. Courtyards, balconies, porches and even living rooms are all ideal spots in which to place a pot or container to grow your produce of choice. To make your garden a talking point try upcycling an old bath or laundry tub or even stacking a few old car tyres in which to grow your plants. Unless you have access to a raised garden bed, the area you select should be flat and sheltered but also receive reasonable amounts of sunlight. What to plant? Common options include: edible flower types such as chamomile, fuchsia, lavender, honeysuckle and violet; herbs such as rosemary, basil, chives, sage, thyme and mint; vegetables such as lettuce, silver beet, tomato or corn; and fruits such as kiwifruit, strawberries or passion fruit. Planting times will vary for different vegetables, herbs or fruits depending on their growing seasons. A good rule of thumb is to plant warm-season vegetables in spring and cool-season veggies in winter.

Safety comes first Remember, everything you pick to eat should be washed carefully. Only eat flowers in salads if they are organically grown and free of pesticides and other garden sprays. Some flowers, seeds and leaves can be toxic, so if you’re not sure, do further research. When working outside remember to wear adequate sunscreen and protective clothing including a hat, correct footwear and gloves. Always bend at the knee when lifting something heavy and don’t use your back. When using potting mix, or spraying fertilisers observe safety instructions and ideally wear a mask. Be realistic When planning to plant an edible garden the most important thing you can do is to be realistic about the time you will actually have to tend to your vegetables, fruits or herbs as this will likely influence what type of garden you plant. Tips for success There can be no guarantee of success but try the following tips to ensure a flourishing and productive garden space. - Monitor regularly for weed growth, ensuring that when weeds appear you remove them from the root. - Check the health of the plants. Do not leave old fruit, vegetables and pruning material underneath the plants. - Where possible, undertake minor pruning to keep shrubs and trees in shape. - Pests and diseases are a natural part of nature, and it is not always possible to eliminate them. Consider using nonchemical solutions to ward off any unwanted pests.
