More Opportunities to Learn and Mend at the Repair Café

In an exciting development for the environmentally conscious and DIY enthusiasts alike, Repair Café Stafford is set to host workshops more frequently, providing locals with even greater opportunities to learn, share skills, and contribute to a more sustainable community.

‘In 2023 we tested the waters by having a workshop every quarter,’ said Rebecca Hainsworth, from The Community Place. ‘We had the chance to hear amazing stories behind some of the items people brought in. Among other things, Jennifer brought in her wooden drawers to be fixed and we later found out they were about 130 years old and had travelled from England to South Africa and then Australia. We sharpened someone’s great-grandmother’s scissors she had used when she was a nurse, and we partially repaired a musical box that hadn’t been heard in over 40 years. The enthusiasm from the community was great and we realised we could maximise our benefit by having more workshops. To help with consistency we have decided on holding them in the first week of every second month, starting February 3.” Offering a chance for more people to take part in the collaborative effort to reduce waste and promote sustainability, Repair Café Stafford operates out of The Community Place Stafford on 33 Teevan Street. Participants bring in their broken items, from blunt blades to torn trousers, and work alongside skilled volunteers to fix and revive them. If you would like to volunteer, The Repair Cafe welcome new faces to join their team. Volunteers are required for

The previous Repair Cafe Stafford session registrations, hospitality (tea, coffee and cakes are on offer a the Cafe!) as well as those with an interest in fixing things. Participation in Repair Café workshops is free of charge. Simply show up with your broken items and a willingness to learn and engage with the community. People are able to make donations which are used to cover operational costs of holding the events. Walk-ins are always welcome and if you prefer, bookings for specific times will open a week in advance of the workshop. The next session will take place on Saturday 3rd February 2024 from 9.30am – 12.30pm with bookings opening up on Thursday, 25 January. For more information about Repair Café Stafford, follow them on Facebook, or sign up for The Community Place newsletter https://www.thecommunityplace.com.au/newsletters/

An Echo of Creativity Across Padua College

After establishing a partnership with Padua College in 2022, our journalist Georgia Wright adopted a mentor’s role for the school’s Eagles’ Quill Writing Club. Two years later, both Echo News and the Eagles’ Quill have flourished from the mutual support. During a worthwhile, grant-funded investment in local schools, Georgia began attending Eagle’s Quill meetings to pass on her knowledge of writing and journalism. Having strived to become an author herself—and achieving that goal at age 16—her mentorship was deeply appreciated by the students. So much so, she was made a permanent source of expertise at the college. As well as Georgia’s mentorship, Echo News has also sponsored two consecutive annual writing competitions at Padua College, donating $150 worth of prizemoney to the cause. As a result, Padua’s young achievers are now more interested in storytelling than ever. Especially, one student by the likes of Ethan Messer, whom Georgia affectionately refers to as her intern. An aspiring journalist himself, Ethan wrote six articles for The Little Echo during its time and now collaborates with Georgia on pieces for Echo News. He shares, ‘Throughout the year, with Georgia’s help, I have been able report on many important topics and help inform people about aspects that are improving or affecting nature, along with many other real-world problems. Georgia’s time at Padua has also seen the beginning and the growth of Padua’s Eagles Quill Writing Club, introducing more kids to creative writing and journalism. My writing skills have grown, and I have been able to learn the ins and out of journalism and reporting. Sharing topics that impact the daily life of people and organisms is something that I will be continuing long into the future.’ Recently, Ethan repurposed the confidence he’s gained and took his creativity to all new heights. He scored the challenging role of The Riddler in a Padua College short film Batman: The Fall of Gotham. Georgia attended the film’s premiere on behalf of Echo News to show her support. Ethan explains, ‘The Batman movie was a parody of the normal Batman movies that are known by everyone. This project started with the class creating a small Batman skit before term four, which was then turned into our assessment. The whole class had a tremendous influence on the story and

design of the movie. Led by our director and other leaders in the class, we were able to create a 40-minute-long Batman film with all the same villains, but a completely original story and script. I was one of the assistant directors and script writers in the movie, while also playing the classic Batman villain, the Riddler. Creative abilities and many other students’ strengths were easily emphasised throughout the filming of this movie. Many challenges were accounted for along the way. With the guidance of many experienced teachers and a strong cast, Batman: The Fall of Gotham became real and taught many people lessons on leadership along the way.’ Georgia found it to be a wholesome, encouraging experience watching Ethan, amongst all the other students involved in the project, showcase such remarkable storytelling skills. As Joanne O’Bryan, the organiser of the writing club, shared after the premiere, ‘I will never forget this night. These kids are so special, I feel so lucky to have witnessed their abilities grow.’ Feeling the same sense of pride, Georgia looks forward to a continued partnership with Padua College—and continued internship with Ethan—in the new year.

Prison chaplains celebrate 50 years on the inside

It takes a special sort of person to enter a prison – by choice – to give spiritual support to convicted criminals. Myra has been doing it for 15 years.

The local woman is a volunteer prison chaplain with Gaythorne-based Inside Out Prison Chaplaincy, which is celebrating 50 years supporting people in Queensland correctional centres. ‘I knew this was the ministry that God had for me: to sit and listen to broken men wanting to change,’ Myra said. Inside Out Prison Chaplaincy, operated by not-for-profit Carinity, recently held its 50th anniversary celebration with the gathering attended by guests from as far away as Cairns. The event included presentations from past and current chaplains and Inside Out Prison Chaplaincy coordinators, as well as former prisoners whose lives have been transformed thanks to prison chaplains. That includes a man who was imprisoned for drug trafficking. Meeting a prison chaplain was the start of his incredible transformation. The chaplain visited the prisoner each week. He started reading a bible by himself in his prison cell and attended weekly chapel services. ‘This man who was in my Bible study group some years ago gave his life to Jesus and now is ministering to former prisoners, after their release,’ Myra said. Inside Out Prison Chaplaincy currently has around 30 volunteer chaplains providing pastoral care to men and women in 14 correctional centres around Queensland. Myra said the men and women in prison appreciate the efforts of the chaplains who volunteer to visit them.

Page 6 - January 2024, The Everton Echo

Myra has been a volunteer prison chaplain with Inside Out Prison Chaplaincy for 15 years ‘They know we really care, and they can’t believe that we don’t get paid. They know that they can trust us,’ Myra said. ‘They say we light up their prison unit with our smiles when we enter, as they say, the ‘dark place’.’ You can support Inside Out Prison Chaplaincy to place more chaplains into Queensland prisons by donating online at www. insideoutchaplaincy.org.au

A Beacon of Humanitarianism and Inspiration

In a momentous event held on November 27th at Government House Sydney, Rose Ness Wilson, a Year 6 student from St William’s Primary School in Keperra, was unveiled as the Queensland Junior Ambassador to The Fred Hollows Foundation. This prestigious accolade was awarded to Rose in recognition of her exceptional demonstration of humanitarian values and unwavering commitment to serving others. The Humanity Award, a nationally acclaimed initiative by The Fred Hollows Foundation, honors students who, akin to the legendary ophthalmologist Professor Fred Hollows, exhibit remarkable humanitarianism towards their peers and communities. Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AC KC, Governor of New South Wales, alongside Mr. Dennis Wilson, served as joint Patrons for The Foundation's award ceremony, gracing the occasion with their presence and support. Rose’s nomination for the Humanity Award, alongside her fellow student Alana Fagan, was submitted by her teacher, Nikki Saunders, representing St William's Grovely. Ms. Saunders lauded Rose’s exceptional community spirit, stating, ‘Rose goes above and beyond to help people in need, not just within our school but also in the wider community.’ Rose’s philanthropic endeavors include assembling Christmas hampers for the St Vincent de Paul Society, where she crafted unique handwritten messages for each pack, and brightening the lives of aged care facility residents with her visits. Gabi Hollows with Rose at Government House fundraising efforts, particularly for medical research and charities benefiting premature babies, reflect her personal journey as a premature baby herself. Moreover, Rose’s leadership shone through as she initiated and managed the school newsletter, SWP (St Williams Press), involving students in its creation. Inspired by a workshop from Echo New’s Journalist Georgia Wright last year, this school newsletter was written by the students, for the students. This initiative persisted throughout her final two years in primary school, affirming her commitment to community engagement and communication. As one of six Junior Ambassadors to The Fred Hollows Foundation, Rose has received a $5,000 grant from Specsavers, the award's charity partner, dedicated to supporting The Foundation’s mission to eradicate avoidable blindness worldwide. An additional $10,000, also donated by Specsavers, will bolster The Foundation’s programs globally. Rose has chosen to allocate her $10,000 funding towards The Foundation's Indigenous Australia Program, highlighting her commitment to supporting eye care services within Indigenous communities. Rose Ness Wilson’s commitment to humanitarianism and her dedication to serving others serve as an inspiration to her peers and the wider community, showcasing the impact that young individuals can have on creating positive change in society.

Tapping into Community and Diversity for 36 Years

Gabrielle Barnier from Sunstate Cloggers and Amanda Lim Confidance Cloggers

Clogging, an often overlooked dance style, has entrenched itself within Brisbane’s vibrant cultural tapestry for the past three decades.

Originating as a folk dance in the Appalachian Mountains of the US, clogging bears striking resemblances to tap dancing, sharing a common lineage. Brisbane, as a hub for this rhythmic art, hosts numerous clogging clubs spread across various suburbs, including Brisbane City Hall, Kenmore, Runcorn, Lutwyche, Chermside, and Caboolture. These clubs serve as community centres where individuals of diverse backgrounds and ages, spanning from 6 to over 80 years old, converge to celebrate this percussive feet danceform. ‘At its core, clogging is not just about dance; it’s a way of connecting people, creating bonds, and celebrating diversity,’ mentions one of the club members. The dance form, once rooted in fiddle and bluegrass music, has evolved dynamically, embracing a wide spectrum of musical genres from country to pop and hip-hop. Confidance Cloggers, a Brisbane clogging clubs, stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of this art form. The club has been a source of joy and connection for its members, fostering qualities like teamwork, leadership skills, and self-confidence. ‘More than just dance steps, clogging has provided us with mental wellness benefits, especially during challenging times,’ added another enthusiast. With a membership that transcends cultural and generational barriers, Confidance Cloggers exemplifies the power of dance in promoting social cohesion and well-being. Their website (http://www.confidancecloggers.com) showcases their dedication to this unique dance style, serving as a testament to their commitment to fostering a welcoming community. ‘As we mark our 36th year in Brisbane, we invite everyone to discover the joy of clogging. It‘s more than a dance; it’s a celebration of life and unity,’ expressed a club representative, extending an open invitation to all interested individuals to join their community-driven dance program. Everyone’s a Grinner at Winners’ Dinner

On Wednesday, December 13th, the Newmarket Bocce Club wrapped up its year with a celebratory event deemed the Winners Dinner. This cherished tradition marked the culmination of a year filled with camaraderie, competitive spirit, and success for the club‘s members.

What makes this dinner particularly special is its association with the club’s four major annual competitions: the Newmarket Bocce Club members at the recent Winners’ Dinner Tony Rosa Cup, Charlie Parella Cup, QBF Cup, and Norm Haupt Cup. These events aren’t just about game play; they are a testament to the club’s strategy and dedication to securing victories. During these competitions, the club employs a unique approach by hand-picking two teams to maximize their chances of success. The remaining players are then evenly distributed among the other teams. However, it’s not just about the glory of victory; there’s a financial aspect tied to the success of these teams. Whenever a team secures a notable position in any of these tournaments, they generously contribute 20% of their winnings to the club. This collective contribution forms a pool of funds reserved for the much-anticipated Winners’ Dinner. With the financial backing from these victorious teams, the club ensures that all players involved in these esteemed competitions are extended an invitation to the dinner at no cost. It becomes a celebration of the collective effort and dedication shown throughout the year, fostering a sense of unity and pride among the members. The recent Winners’ Dinner lived up to its reputation, offering an evening filled with joy, camaraderie, and, of course, delightful cuisine. Members gathered to reminisce about the year’s highlights, share stories of their triumphs and defeats, and simply revel in the shared love for the game. The Newmarket Bocce Club firmly believes that such gatherings not only honor the accomplishments of its members but also strengthen the bond that holds the club together. It’s more than just a game; it’s a community built on mutual respect, support, and a passion for bocce. For more information about joining the club, call Tony on 0412 386 617 or Mario De Marco on 0403 257 325.

Countdown to Netball Season at Pine Hills Netball Club

The Pine Hills Netball Club is looking forward to the start of the winter netball season and to welcoming new and returning players back to the club for the 2023 season. Following a successful 2023 season which saw one team make the finals, as well as multiple players selected for representative competitions, Pine Hills Netball Club is excited for the start of the new winter season at Downey Park commencing in late April 2024. The club offers a very well organised non-competitive program for girls aged 8, 9 or 10 and fields teams in all competitive age groups from 11s through to the open age division. During the winter season, all non-competitive and competitive teams play at Downey Park on a Saturday with optional participation in local association carnivals. While Pine Hills is a relatively small club, they pack a punch in terms of the experience they offer netball players and their families with exceptional coaching, great team spirit, strong player pathways and an enormous focus on fair play. As a new family in 2023 commented, “Pine Hills is both extremely well-organised and also very friendly and welcoming to my daughters who were all new to playing netball.” Founded in 1978, the club is based at the James Drysdale Reserve in Bunya and holds all team training and their Net Set Go program during the warmer months at the netball courts located at the Reserve. In 2024, the club is keen to grow their player community and field a few more teams in the Downey Park winter competition. They are looking forward to welcoming all of

their 2023 players back to the club and are also looking for new players across all age groups. Whether you see yourself as an elite player, a social player or have never tried netball before, Pine Hills Netball Club is an excellent choice and will provide you with plenty of pathways for your netball journey. Registrations for the 2024 season will open on 8th January and the club will be holding two skills evenings on the 25th January and 1st February for competitive age groups (11 years and above) for those new and existing players who would like to get back into the swing of netball prior to grading and the commencement of pre-season training. The Transformative Benefits of Karate Training for All

Research in kid’s sports links participation to better grades and self-esteem, long-term improvements in education, employment and lower obesity rates.

But the escalating time, travel and financial demands these days are pushing some parents to look to sports that are inclusive for the whole family. By this families can still reap the many benefits of sport mentioned above, however also gain quality time as a whole family. Karate is more than a sport and the benefits Karate can bring to adults and children alike is endless. Karate can improve your stamina, focus, coordination, along with your fitness and overall health. It will teach life skills, how to defend yourself against others, including how to not put yourself in dangerous situations. All of this can improve self-confidence and self-esteem giving the student a great sense of self accomplishment. Luckily for residents, we have the principal QLD dojo of The Traditional Okinawan Goju-Ryu Karate-do Federation (TOGKF) in operation at Craigslea S.H.S, which houses a variety of world class instructors. Head Sensei, Gavin Hill, who is a 6th degree black belt and has over 30 years’ experience in Karate and serving as a Qld Police Officer, explains that they already have many families reaping the rewards of this training. “We have six families at the dojo at the moment, combinations of fathers and sons/daughters/ siblings. It is quite inspiring to see how they enjoy sharing this healthy activity and having fun at the same time,” said Sensei Gavin.

The TOGKF caters for all age groups, and the instructors have found that children have generally developed the ability to concentrate and participate for the duration of the classes from age six upwards. Currently, they have a wide age range of students that enjoy the classes from age six to sixty. ‘Here, students gain so much more than just physical skills. They gain self-respect and self-discipline which sees their behaviour change, their work improve, their ability to focus and problem solve increases, it provides so much more than just learning to punch and kick.’ The TOGKF run classes Monday and Wednesday from 5:30pm-6:30pm (Kids) and 6:30pm to 8pm (Adults) This allows instructors to cater the teaching methods to the class so that the students get more out of each session. In addition, the TOGKF is offering the FIRST MONTH FREE at the Craigslea S.H.S dojo. If you would like to take part or have any queries, call 0419 719 810. 25 Years of Empowerment and Unity

In the heart of our community, the Mitchelton Branch of the Older Women's Network Queensland (OWNQ) has reached a remarkable milestone, commemorating its 25th anniversary.

From its humble beginnings with a modest gathering of 10 attendees at the inaugural meeting on May 13, 1998, the branch has burgeoned into a thriving community boasting an impressive membership of 80 women. Over the course of the last quarter-century, the Mitchelton Branch has evolved into a vital cornerstone for social connection and empowerment among its members. What initially commenced as a formal monthly meeting has transformed into a dynamic nexus of activities, knowledge exchange, and educational pursuits tailored to the interests of this vibrant group of women. A particularly commendable facet of the Mitchelton Branch is its commitment to adapt and expand in alignment with the changing needs and preferences of its members. Presently, the branch not only serves as a platform for social interaction but has broadened its scope to encompass member-organized activities.such as ten-pin bowling, amateur theatre and movie outings, trips to the city and so much more. The celebration of this remarkable 25-year journey saw 44 women congregating at the Stafford Tavern on November 28th. Amidst an atmosphere filled with laughter and shared stories, the event encapsulated a deep sense of appreciation for the enduring bonds forged over the years. This silver anniversary celebration served not only as a moment for reflection but also as an occasion to look forward to the future with renewed optimism and enthusiasm. As we commend the Mitchelton Branch of OWNQ for its unwavering commitment to the

well-being of older women in our community, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to the women whose contributions have fueled the growth and success of this branch over the years. THE FERNY REPORT

by Mark Furner M.P. State Member for Ferny Grove Cost of living relief

We know Queenslanders are feeling the impacts of national cost of living pressures. That’s why the Queensland Government is acting and is delivering the largest cost of living relief package in the country by providing rebates to every Queensland household through their electricity bills. We can only deliver these record rebates to Queenslanders because the resources sector is exporting record amounts of minerals and is making record profit out of those Queensland minerals. The Queensland Government is making the resources sector pay their fair share – so every Queensland household benefits – not just the mining companies. Also, because we made sure Queensland’s electricity assets in stayed taxpayer’s hands, we can make sure the profits from our government owned assets are returned to Queenslanders. Across the 2023/24 financial year every Queensland household is receiving: • $550 for every Queensland Household • $1,072 for eligible seniors and concession card holders • $650 for eligible small businesses

Pumping the brakes on transport costs

On top of the rebates provided to every Queensland household, the Queensland Government is doing its bit to keep downward pressure on prices by freezing the price of regos and public transport fares for all of 2024.

Free Kindy!

This month the Queensland Government’s free Kindy program goes into effect putting thousands of dollars back into the pockets of Queensland families. Our free Kindergarten program is open to all children in their year before Prep and provides 15 hours a week for 40 weeks a year at no cost. There is no need to apply as free Kindy is provided directly through your Kindergarten provider. For more information go to: www.qld.gov.au/kindy.

Fee-Free TAFE

The Queensland and Australian Governments have teamed up to provide fee-free TAFE courses for eligible Queenslanders. The fee-free TAFE courses have been specifically chosen based on local skills demand and advice from industry. This is a game changer for people just starting out on their career path. Blackwood Street Artwork

There is new artwork in Blackwood Street Mitchelton! Five native animals can be seen climbing in the streetlights as part of the ongoing efforts to make the area more appealing and more enjoyable to be in. When the chance came up to get these figures for our area, I leapt at it. Public art is a great way for us to draw more shoppers for our traders, while making it better generally for locals.
