Squeaky Clean Formal
Christine approached her close friend Mel Nicol, who lived in Dirranbandi until her major move 4 years ago to the heart of Brisbane, and both ladies had a lightbulb moment. What if, for those in need, they could make the seemingly unsurmountable cost of formal night disappear? Poof, the foundations for their co-run business, Bubble & Squeak, were formed. They set about sourcing preloved and new formal and semi formal wear to giveaway ‘free’ through their new community service. Any Year 11/12 student is welcome to pop into the ladies’ studio in Stafford and rummage through their vast collections to their hearts’ desire—no questions asked! In order to remove any emotional stress from clients, all that is required from them is a Student ID. They can come get fitted for their gown or suit; Bubble & Squeak has all size outfits, women and mens’ shoes, ties, clutches, jewellery, and more. They have already sent two boxes of goods to Borroloola, Darwin, for their first youth ball, as well as 3 car loads of quality clothes to Solomon Island Community in Oakey. Between Mel and Christine, they have had 7 children attend school formals and are fiercely aware of how expensive it is. The mums wish to lessen the financial and emotional burden on families wanting their children to experience the oncein-a-lifetime event. Mel’s heart also lies in rural and remote communities that endure Christinehardship. tells, ‘We fitted our first client this week and have three next Tuesday fully booked out. Christine has lived in Brisbane Northside for 29 years, originally finding her life’s fulfilment as a Registered Nurse. She has three children, respectively aged 20, 18, and 16, who all attended Prince of Peace Lutheran School. Christine founded three previous community services—Loaves & Fish, Meals 4 You, and Meals 4 Youth—which led to her receiving an Australia Day Lord Mayors Award. However, Christine had to leave behind her ministries 6 years ago due to Degenerative Disc Disease, which rendered her disabled. Around this time, Christine realised that with the cost of living growing exponentially, affording formal and semi formal attire was becoming out of reach for more families. Formal night—one of the most memorable events of the high school senior year. Not to mention, an incredibly expensive night for students who go ‘all out’ and splurge on a dress or suit, even if it is just for solo use hire, plus the costs of makeup, hair, formal shoes, a clutch, the ultimate limousine grandentrance, etcetera, etcetera.
To most students, the financial side of things is a headache and a half. Is it even worth the splurge? some might wonder. If you ask local mums Christine Bunn and Mel Nicol, their answer will be a definitive No.

Two local educators from Milestones Everton Park Childcare—manager Tina Barbour and assistant manager Cheryn Hurst— will also be taking part in this event. It will be held on Sunday 9th October at 10am at the childcare centre, which is located at Tina Barbour and Cheryn Hurst 124 Rogers Parade E, Everton Park. For Tina, her inspiration is her Aunty, who passed away in 2015 from Lymphoma, which is a form of blood cancer.Tina had such a special bond with her Aunty and this is her way of honoring her. For Cheryn, knowing that 50 families get the call each day to say they or their loved one has blood cancer, is way too many. She wants to raise awareness and much needed funds to support these families. Together they feel they have a great platform to raise awareness. You can support all these lovely ladies by donating through the following ways.

DONATE TO OUR LOCAL GREATEST SHAVERS!
Then there are local teens Priya and Felicity from Wavell State High School have decided to fundraise for Cancer Council through World’s Greatest Shave. The girls will be donating their ponytails on the 17th September, and have already raised $300 and smashed their goal of $250!

Many, many thanks!!
Just one year later, in 1999, another WGS fundraising event raised $1.85 million from almost 2000 shaved heads! By 2013, the number 20 million was standing bright and bold behind that dollar sign. Donations, participation, awareness, and support was pooling rapidly across our beloved country. Funny how quickly a hairstyle—or lack thereof—could turn into a beacon of promise for Aussies facing blood cancer.
This 16th September, two local heroes Lily (12 years) of Everton Hills and Willow (12 years) of Mitchelton will take a plunge and get The Big Snip together. The two friends’ goal is to support families in our community living with blood cancer and support the Leukaemia Foundation through the WGS.

The small impact we have is worth putting towards something charitable,’ Felicity believes. But wait…There’s more!
Felicity, too, has experienced the heartbreaking loss of loved ones due to cancer, and has always wanted to contribute to one of these organisations.
Soon-to-be Greatest Shavers Lily and Willow for the past few years.
It was in 1998 that the World’s Greatest Shave (WGS), the biggest fundraising effort for blood cancer to date, was born. When founder Eric Graydon—a sufferer of acute myeloid leukaemia (AML)—was diagnosed, his family went all out trying to scrape together the funds for emergency treatment. Off the back of their hard yakka and a miracle, $80 000 was raised after 200 people’s heads were shaved.
Now, in 2022, Australia is celebrating 24 years of glory and over 2 million participants in the World’s Greatest Shave. Imagine the piles of cut-off hair!!
The Everton Echo, September 2022 - Page 9www.echo-news.com.au
Currently, we are seeing a rise of what people call ‘the next gen’ of Shavers; our youth are beginning to rise to the challenge and rally the support of communities across Australia. Especially, our community in Brisbane.
Priya explains, ‘Cancer is a disease that has touched my life along with many others, with both my aunt and Grandma dying from some form of cancer.’

Tired of running mindlessly on the treadmill at the gym? Or are you sick of running along the same bitumen road? Well, not only do we have some of the most incredible bushlands in and around our region, but there are also lots of great reasons to move your running sessions outdoors. Checkout just some of the benefits that trail running can bring to your health below.
4. Improve Your Balance: Anyone can run straight without losing their balance, but trail running isn’t quite as easy. Learning to navigate rocks, roots and all the other aspects of nature will provide you with real-world running skills.
5. Take A Mental Break: Trail running and walking has been shown to decrease worry, anxiety, and negative thoughts. Connect with nature in a meaningful, relaxing way, forget your hectic life and responsibilities and hit the trails!
1. Improved Practical Endurance: While running on a treadmill keeps you working out on a fl at, stable, consistent surface, trail running is variable. This is a great boost to your practical endurance and will work muscle groups you didn’t even know you had.
6 Reasons To Hit The Trails This Weekend Feature Your local spring health and wellbeing guide!
3. Burn More Calories: The increased effort from the elevation and altitude will help your body burn more calories. If you want to lose weight quickly, you’ll burn fat much quicker doing high-intensity training on bushland trails than flat-surfaced runs.
2. Increase Leg Strength: Trail running pushes your muscles in a variety of challenging ways. Your muscles will grow and adapt to incline and decline running, and you’ll gain explosive speed from jumping up and off rocks and other natural obstacles.
6. Enjoy A Stress-Free Workout: Out on the trails, you don’t have to stress about crowds or traffic. Just you and the dirt path…and occasionally the wildlife. If you are interested in joining a local running group, check out the Upper Kedron trail runners group at www. facebook.com/UpperKedronTrailRunners/
• Diaphragm strain: During a bought of prolonged coughing your diaphragm has to work overtime which can cause tightness under the ribcage and a feeling you can’t take a full breath.
Chiropractors are musculoskeletal therapists meaning we assess and treat the spine, muscles and surrounding tissues. A chiropractor finds areas of the body that are not moving and aims to adjust and release these to restore normal function. After a coughing injury this may be a spinal or rib adjustment, diaphragm release and soft tissue therapy to tight muscles and tissue.
• Lower back pain: the force of a cough can exacerbate or cause a disc injury.
• Muscle strain: A cough can be forceful enough to cause a strain of muscles in the back, intercostal muscles (ribcage), neck and abdominals.

When I used to think about growing muscle and training my core, my mind flicked to the gym. To lifting weights. To high impact HIIT classes or sunrise sprints. Never did I expect to find my glutes screaming in protest and my abdomen shaking during a Pilates class.
After seeing a rising trend on social media of gym-junkie females turning to Pilates for extra burn, I decided it was time to experiment with the foreign form of exercise. With a ‘don’t knock it till you try it’ attitude, I booked myself and a fellow gym-junkie friend into a 3-class trial run at Function.all Pilates in Ferny Hills. We arrived not knowing what to expect, and ended up leaving feeling very humbled, and very sore. As a low-impact, total body workout that focuses on improving flexibility and strengthening muscles through controlled, repetitive motions, Pilates puts a whole new strain on your body. You train as an integrated whole—not just as compounded muscle groups—while focusing on core, posture, and upper/lower body strength. One of the most important learnings of Pilates is using breath and mind-muscle connection to ‘feel the burn’. It took me a hot minute to grasp the concept, but now my approach to exercise is forever altered. At Function.all, they incorporate reformer machines, which add on more resistance than typical body weight, ultimately making your muscles work harder. Instructors work closely with participants and tailor to their needs, making sure that everyone is working hard enough at
By Georgia Wright
Eadie Kendell with Echo News Journalist Georgia Wright at Function.all Pilates studio their own standards. There are three main types of workouts offered at Function.all; Shape, which is a low-impact toning class; Energy, which involves more cardio and challenging movements; and Foundations, the class that focuses most on form and conditioning. The latter is the perfect place for beginners (like me) to start, as this is where the breathwork and mind-muscle connection is established, alongside the key components of Pilatesstyle workouts. I found shape to be quite challenging especially, considering the low-impact, as it forced my body to pretzel into shapes and motions using a sort of balance I’d never considered prior. However, it was the Energy class that left me sweating and reeling in utter Allexhaustion.thepainwas worth it, of course, because I had gained a sense of bodily control and grace previously unknown. And so it was made official: I, a gym junkie, now had the art of Reformer Pilates up my sleeve thanks to Function. all. To my wonderful instructors, I am sure to return soon!

Bowling in the Modern Era
In this modern era, the club is thriving thanks to its members offering a strong commitment to the club. Everyone is welcome and anyone who would like to have a go at playing lawn bowls can pop down and play a game of barefoot bowls with friends although it is advisable to make a booking prior, to avoid disappointment. Alternatively, there are organised Introduction To Lawn Bowls sessions held at the club throughout the year in March, May, September and October. Keen to embrace the younger generation in this much-loved sport, members recently provided tuition on lawn bowls to high school students in July. The students loved the introductory sessions and it is hoped that at some time in the future these youngsters will take up the game. This month, Gaythorne Bowls Club is delighted to provide Introduction to Lawn Bowls sessions every Wednesday morning from 9am to 11am – why not pop along and give it a try! In October, the club is inviting the community to attend FREE Introduction to Lawn Bowls every Tuesday evening from 6pm to 8pm. Please ensure to wear shoes that are fully enclosed, with a flat sole.

NEW AND IMPROVED DRAINAGE
FLOOD RECOVERY IN OUR COMMUNITY
The areas of Kedron Brook and Enoggera Creek in our community were one of the hardest hit by the February floods. Enoggera Ward suffered the most collective damage to community facilities, of anywhere in the State. Brisbane’s rebuild and recovery has been fast-tracked in the 202223 Budget, with more than $500 million to be spent restoring and improving the city’s clubs, parks, pools and other Council assets. This includes $50 million over two years to rebuild Kedron Brook Bikeway. As we carry on rebuilding, can I ask for people to continue to be compassionate, as some households, businesses and community organisations have lost everything and together we are trying to rebuild our community.

Kedron Brook restoration website QR Code Council’s Budget 2022-23 was handed down by Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner in June and it’s exciting to see the first of these projects commence in our local area. This year’s Budget is all about flood recovery including better drainage to help rebuild our community. Whether projects are improving our road network, or building back better, I will continue to advocate for recovery in our area. As these important works continue, I remain committed to the local community, sports clubs, events and businesses.

New drainage infrastructure for the Enoggera Ward Following the February floods, I advocated strongly for new and improved drainage infrastructure for our area. So far, I have secured funding for major drainage upgrades for Hilda St, Alderley; Venus St, Ashgrove; Elgin St, Alderley; Grays Rd, Gaythorne; Frasers Rd, Ashgrove; Gilbert Rd, Windsor and Stewart Rd, Ashgrove. I look forward to finding even more opportunities to assist with future drainage improvements and I am pleased to report construction on the funded projects will start in the next few weeks.

During the Boer War, Dr Bancroft was based at Deception Bay and had a contract to supply the Australian Government with tinned meat for soldiers. In 1906 he moved to the Alderley-Enoggera area and lived in a house at the present day ‘triangular’ location bordered by Pickering Street and South Pine Road. He started a long-running tannery nearby. While the tannery continued its operations, Dr Bancroft also pursued government medical work, the collection of natural science specimens and photography. In later life he lived for a while on the Atherton Tablelands before eventually settling in Eidsvold in the Burnett region. Near the tannery on Kedron Brook, a Mr Simpson ran a knackery. When building his own home, he removed and relocated the Bancroft house, to land which became known as Royal Parade Estate. This is in the vicinity of present-
Local resident Shane Hinsch is proof that members of our community can make change happen. Shane’s had concerns around the safety of the bend where McIlwraith Street, meets South Pine Road in Everton Park, especially in wet weather which led him to provide photographic evidence of incidents that have occurred at the location. Shane’s hard work and commitment allowed me to make many representations to the Minister for Transport and Main Roads. The result was a $500,000 investment in anti-skid resurfacing, creating a safer corner for all motorists. I am very grateful for Shane’s assistance with this matter and would like to thank him for his service to the community. This proves that together we can make a difference and get outcomes that benefit us all. I remain committed in my advocacy for safer roads and will continue to lobby the Minister for Transport and Main Roads, to commit funding for vital road projects in our electorate of Everton, to ensure everyone gets home sooner and safer. As your local state member of Parliament, I'm here to represent you and am always available to listen and hear about the issues that matter to you.

On July 17th our club was invited to Redlands Bocce Club for the Industrial Protective Coatings Queensland (IPCQ) Cup. The competition is kindly sponsored by Col Meers and Paul Jeffs who have been long standing sponsors of Redlands Bocce Club since 2003. The inaugural perpetual cup was won by Abruzzo Bocce Club. Redlands Bocce Club has dominated the competition since, with the only other club to have won being Newmarket Bocce club in 2017 & 2019. We had a great day of challenging competition and fortunately for us, Newmarket got the honours of 1st and 2nd place with Redlands in 3rd place. The trophy came back to Newmarket Bocce club and what a fabulous day was had by all, with great camaraderie. are no losers in bocce, we are all winners! are interested in coming along for a try out, or would like more information about contact Mario on 0403 257 325 or Bill on 0431 458 481. 90149699385

The Serenata Signer’s Concert Booking Officer has long had a close relationship with The Gap Uniting Church Friendship Group. They have entertained the friendship group several times and they are always very positive about joining in and making the group feel welcome, and they did so again on August On8th.this occasion, the Serenata Singers sang an Irving Berlin medley, some Simon and Garfunkel and a selection from Fiddler on the Roof. As usual, they invited the audience to join them in some community singing with ‘Georgy Girl’, ‘Singin' In The Rain’ and other popular tunes. Most of the Signers gathered for coffee Ifafterwards.youwould like to join this friendly community choir, please email gmail.comserenatasingersthegap@ - no professional skills required, just a willingness to listen, learn and enjoy!!
