A Movie Spectacular not to be missed
If you are looking for a fun filled evening out with the family, make sure you mark Saturday 7th March in your diary.
With the assistance of the Golden Valley Keperra Lions, the Ferny Hills Girl Guides will be hosting a FREE movie screening of ‘How to Train your Dragon: Hidden World’ at George Willmore Park, Ferny Hills. The event, sponsored by Councillor Matt Constance, is aimed to raise much needed funds for the Guides and also to bring awareness to this fabulous community group that we have right on our doorstep. Festivities will kick off at 5.30pm and there will be a sausage sizzle, cold drinks, slushies and popcorn on sale, along with EFTPOS available for your convenience. Sandra Williams, District Manager for Alinga, says the girls really look forward to hosting this event every year. ‘The Ferny Hills Girl Guides are excited to be able to host another free ‘Movie in the Park in 2020’. The Guides, together with their Leaders, love getting involved in our community,’ commented Sandra. For further information about the event visit the Facebook event page www.facebook.com/events/583093082531299/ The Hills Echo delivers 14,000 copies per month of what matters to The Hills District and surrounds. Monthly news from the Brisbane Tramway Museum and the Ferny Grove Men’s Shed 2020 has got away to a flying start at the Brisbane Tramway Museum with the addition of a new tram simulator!
This new attraction is now fully installed in the ticket office/ shop where it can be easily accessed by kids of all ages wishing to drive a tram. Based on a ‘Drop Centre’ design (trams built from approximately 1928 to 1938), the simulator features a genuine controller and handbrake from vintage trams, together with the bells that those trams were equipped with. At present, the tram only ‘travels’ on the museum’s own track, however longer routes are being considered. Meanwhile, restoration and maintenance The new simulator is up and running programs continue. Currently, the 1915 Dreadnought class tram and a trolley bus from the 1950 era are being restored. A major refurbishment on the Scammel - mentioned in the previous Hills Echo - is undergoing restoration. As always, the museum is short of qualified tradesmen, particularly fitters and turners, electricians, electrical fitters and people who can work with light metal. New members are always welcome so please get in touch if you would like to join the museum or Men’s Shed. This month, another of the gardens will be the focus of a planting session by ‘The Men of The Trees’. They are another local not-for-profit organisation specialising in promoting the planting of species which were native to our area when it was first settled. The first garden they planted is thriving! Another ongoing project involves assisting the local cricket club with a few small jobs. The museum opens on Sundays from 12.30pm to 4pm (weather permitting). Tickets prices are $14 for adults, $7 for children, $11 Concession and a family pass for $42. The Brisbane Tramway Museum is proudly supported by the Brisbane City Council

Meet the new residents of the Samford Museum Monthly news from the Samford Museum
The Samford Museum is delighted to introduce some new residents to the museum in the form of a family of mannequins!
Museum volunteers, Susan Rosso and Jan Quin, spent a busy morning preparing and dressing the new residents with stubborn arms and torsos flailing in all directions! With some help from Geoff in putting the models together, and with clothes donated by Jan and Sue, the four mannequins have now been dressed and put on display. All the new members have a name. The bride has been named ‘Sarah’ after the earliest bridal photo in the museum’s nearby display ,Sarah Reed, who married Daniel McCombe in 1887. The early colonial mannequin resident is known as ‘Eliza’ and the milk maid is named ‘Bridget’. Both these names are derived from popular girls names in the very early days. The next job for the museum was to name their school teacher. According to the 125th Anniversary Book for Samford School (1997), no female had ever been a Head Teacher at Samford. The first female teacher/teacher assistant was Miss Lillias Smith, who taught from 1916-1919. The museum’s Smith Family records show a Lillias Theresa Smith married James George Morrison on 24 May 1919, which was just one month after she finished teaching at Samford School. In those days, married teachers were required to resign. So, in honour of Lillias, they have named their Provisional School’s new teacher Miss Smith. The museum welcomes visitors and is open on Wednesdays and Sundays from 10am until 4pm. For further details or enquiries, please call Geoff on 0417 610 983 or email info@samfordmuseum. LIVE com.au

Arana Netball overwhelmed by community support As Arana Netball enters the 2020 season they are excited about the influx of interest in their coaching and umpiring positions.
Club coaches are volunteers, all of whom put their hands up to coach a team outside of their parenting, working, schooling and recreational commitments. Anyone who has ever coached before knows that this is one of the most rewarding volunteer roles you will experience, watching your players develop and achieve so much over the season really is very humbling. The 2020 season welcomes back all but two of Arana Netball’s 2019 coaches along with five new coaches. The two coaches who could not return due to holding other commitments still won't be far away as you Arana 8, 2019- Mia, Lana, Coach Gemma, Coach will still see them on court playing for Arana. The new coaches bring with Bri, Sienna, Romi, Alira, Hannah and Avah. them years of experience in the Arana Netball Club community. The club is rarely short of an umpire to fulfil their Saturday commitments, assist with grading and umpiring in carnivals. This year is no different. There has been an overwhelming response from the community regarding umpiring in 2020 and your health naturally.... Arana Netball is thrilled to welcome the new umpires. The club will endeavour to support and encourage their development. With extensive club member support, community engagement Sick of feeling sick? and constant learning, Arana Netball has an exciting year to look forward to. They are very keen to welcome all players new and old - to the club this year. Tired of feeling tired? Herbs for Your Health!
from The Mitchelton & Districts Garden Club
The Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club meets on Thursday 5th March at the Enoggera Memorial Hall in Trundle Street.
The guest speaker at the meeting will be Debbie Aitcheson from the Chilli Patch at Minden and she will talk about the benefits of using herbs in cooking. One benefit that comes to mind is the intake of less salt in our diet because herbs enhance the flavour. Debbie has cooked using herbs at previous meetings and our members have enjoyed biscuits and other food prepared by her. She may also bring some potted herbs to sell. In February it may be a uncomfortable to be outside for long in the garden so time could be spent on propagating to avoid the heat. Layering is a satisfactory way for this time of year. Just take a lower branch of a shrub you'd like to reproduce; make a bend in it (enough to crack the stem) and then break
Page 10 - February 2020, The Hills Echo
the bark about 10cm from its extremity. Smear some cutting gel or honey over the broken bark then push the part that's broken into the soil and anchor it down with wire loops or heavy stones. Keep the soil moist and, in about a month, roots will be developing! Wait until you are sure the new plant is growing before cutting it away from the parent plant to grow in a pot or somewhere else. If your parent plant has no branches close to the ground, a similar process called air layering may be used. However, this time, the fractured part is wrapped in a plastic covering containing damp, coarse sand and moss (peat or spaghnam). The club meets on the first Thursday of the calendar month after morning tea which is served at 9.45 a.m. Visitors and new members are most welcome. There's a lucky door prize, continuous raffle and plant table. The hall is close to public transport and accessible by wheel chair. For more information, phone the president Pat, on 3356 1256.

ASK THE AGENT Your local buying, selling & investing questions answered
Our team at The Hills Echo have headed out into the community to gather some questions from residents regarding buying, selling or investing in property. We have then put the questions to our expert panel of local real estate agents to be answered. If you are looking at investing in property or are thinking of buying or selling your home, the information in this feature may prove invaluable.
Q. I have a 1970’s brick home (one level) that is unrenovated and looking very tired (both inside and out!) I will be selling the property soon and have around $5,000 to spend in order to 'spruce it up'. What would you recommend I spend this money on and what cheap fixes will add value to the home? A. If you’ve got $5,000 to spend, making sure you get the most out of your money is the first step. So, do some planning and get the budget allocated to all the most important areas before you start. Talking to your Agent can be a good start to prioritise that list. With a limited budget, it is important to focus on doing your best clean-up of any rough edges, both internally and externally. Internally, we want it to look as new as we can – we need to do as much de-cluttering and repair work as possible. Then move onto as much cleaning and painting as you can. Often just washing all the surfaces really well will create almost the same effect as painting. Bathrooms and kitchens sell houses so give them the maximum attention. Carpets should be cleaned unless they are really old. In that case it may be best to remove them and leave the hardwood floors visible with some well-
07 3164 7000
priced budget rugs. Replacing old ceiling fans with ‘new’ fan lights will create the impression that we have given the home a proper makeover. Presentation is the key, so fixing those broken hinges in the all the cupboards throughout the house and making sure all the globes and lamps are operating will also bring the look to a different level. Externally the drainage is crucial for property maintenance so make sure yours is in good shape. A 100mm down pour can test even the most effective system and repairs can be a simple as cleaning out the gutters. To enhance street appeal we like mulching the gardens and straightening the letter box. Nail any loose fence palings and wash the front door but include the eaves and the facia boards washed by a house washer. De-cluttering and minimising any excess ‘stuff’ around the house is a massive help. So, either a storage facility or a few trips to the local dump will make sure your biggest asset can really be seen. The buyers love brick so let it be seen and it will turn that $5,000 into $50,000. ASK THE AGENT - Your Buying, Selling & Investing questions answered
Q. I am looking to put my house on the market next year. The bathroom and kitchen are very dated, however I only have the funds to renovate one of the rooms. What would be more appealing to buyers, a renovated kitchen or bathroom? A. Great question! Without seeing your house, we’d suggest you invest in the kitchen – generally speaking you will get better bang for your buck. The kitchen plays a big part in the perceived liveability of a property. Most of us spend the majority of our time in and around the kitchen. When buyers are researching properties, they build an emotional connection by imagining themselves living there. One of the first buyer considerations is how the kitchen will fit into their lives: for entertaining family/friends, for casual meals, for keeping an eye on the kids while cooking. As a result, our buyers tend to place more value on a renovated kitchen than a bathroom. We take our own advice on this when marketing a property and in most cases will show the kitchen photo before the bathroom. When renovating to sell, the challenge is to update the space so it looks new and high-quality but not overly personalised. Some tips: • Keep it neutral • Increase storage space • Opt for simple features & finishes • Make it functional. For instance: a closed-off kitchen can be transformed into an open entertaining space by removing a wall & installing a large kitchen island. For further advice, don’t hesitate to get in touch with our team. From planning, to styling, to organising tradespeople, we’re happy to help.
Q. I am looking to buy my first investment property to rent out, preferably a house. Is there a particular suburb in our region that is more popular for the rental market? Also what key features should I be looking for in an investment property around the local area? A. You’ve picked a great area to start looking! Ferny Hills, in particular, is an exceptional place to invest. Over the last couple of years we have experienced increased interest from both local and interstate investors. Some of the key reasons they choose Ferny Hills is that; the suburb is close to Ferny Grove train station, surrounded by a choice of sought-after schools and predicted price growth. Key features you should look for in an investment property to maximise rental return is:• Close to amenities (shops, park, public transport, etc) • 3+ bedrooms • 2+ bathrooms • Air-conditioning • Outdoor entertaining space • Fully fenced backyard Over the last few months, you may have noticed that a number of Ferny Hills properties have sold prior to being advertised. In our case, these properties have been sold to buyers on our database. To ensure you are kept in the loop, we would suggest you get in touch with our team and other local agents, to ensure you are notified of any upcoming listings prior to market launch. ASK THE AGENT - Your Buying, Selling & Investing questions answered
Q. What should I consider when choosing between a flat block or sloping block to build my new home? Are sloping blocks more difficult to build on? A. Flat blocks are a good choice if you've found a great home
design that works for you, as most builders have ready-made designs to fit traditional lots. Choosing a split or sloping lot gives the opportunity to work with your builder to create a bespoke home design, tailored specifically to your lot. Buyers ask if creating a custom designed home on a sloping lot is a more expensive option and are often surprised to learn that the end cost of building on a split or sloping lot is generally the same, and sometimes even more affordable because sloping lots are often sold at a discounted price. Sloping lots are preferred by buyers who want to use the contour of the land to elevate their main living areas to capture views and breezes or want to fit a larger house on their building envelope. Here at Ellendale, some of our buyers with sloping lots have designed their homes for dual living, with additional private rooms separated from the main family area and bedrooms. There's also the option to leave a void under the home to be built in down the track as the family grows or budget permits additional work.
Q. What grants and incentives am I eligible for as a first home buyer? Should I buy an existing home or build new? A. There are many grants and incentives available which
can help you save thousands, and in my opinion, there really hasn't been a more favourable market for first time buyers in many years. The Queensland Government's $15,000 First Home Owner
www.hillsecho.com
Grant is available for those who are buying or building a new home, which I would urge all young people to consider, as many are not aware of the full cost of renovations and repairs. There's also the Federal Government's Super Saver scheme, which allows you to accrue your deposit in your superannuation account and save money faster due to tax breaks. This year the government has also introduced a deposit guarantee scheme, so buyers only have to save the first five per cent, with the remaining 15 per cent underwritten by the government, helping you to side step Lender's Mortgage Insurance. First home buyers may also be eligible for an exemption or reduction of stamp duty, which can save a further $15,000 on a new $500,000 home. The other good news is that interest rates are at a record low, so repayments are, in some cases, on par or cheaper than rent. Brisbane City Council will even give you a 50 per cent reduction on your first year of rates - saving you another $1,000! Existing homes are generally in established leafy areas and you can move in straight away , while building a new home is a great option for buyers who want to choose a house to suit their lifestyle and are keen to enjoy the better parks and open spaces often found in more modern estates. Ellendale, which is just 12km to the CBD, is doing its part to help first time buyers with the release of its new Cedar Glen precinct, which has homesites priced from just $266,000 and house and land packages from $447,559. Researching your family history can be a little daunting. Who do you start with? Where do you start? How far back can you trace them? Does a DNA test make it easier?
If you have questions, the Queensland Family History Society can help. Browse their website at www.qfhs.org.au to discover upcoming events, resources and other helpful links. However, here are a few hints to get you started. 1. Search the house for info. photos, certificates, diaries, letters, postcards, etc. 2. Start with yourself and fill out a family pedigree chart with your family names, birth, marriage, death dates and places. 3. Confirm the above names, birth, death and marriage dates. Don’t know how to confirm names, events, dates or what to do next? Why not drop by and visit the society or call on 3355 3369.

COUNSELLOR’S COLUMN with Robin Botic
Dear Robin, I want to know how I can communicate better with my husband. I can’t ask him to do anything without him going off his face and calling me a nag. We have a two-year-old son who is going through the terribletwo's tantrums and I am pregnant with our second child. I am still working full-time as a senior nurse and I need help. I feel I do the lion’s share around the house and the few things he’s supposed to do – like take out the nappy bin, bath our son, and put away his own clothes or the mess he makes when he starts another job before he finishes the first. He can be positively charming when he wants something for himself, and I usually give in and go without just to keep the peace. I hope that if I show him by this what I am willing to do for him, that he will be more supportive of me. But he’s not. He sulks and turns nasty if I don’t give him what he wants, and then is abusive, angry, shouts, walks off and slams doors if I am persistent in asking for things to be done for me. I have given up asking for a lot of things but I can’t give in all the time or I would just be a slave to his demands, like his mother is. He is treating me the same as he treats her, which I always thought was awful. He’s really rude but his mum just does what he wants or says to me, ‘There, there, just do it’, or ‘Give it to him’, or ‘Never mind. Just settle him down.’ I want to throw up. I will not become like her. His father is a nasty, mean, angry old sod. He’s the only person Geoff takes any notice of and who like Geoff, does nothing but blame or criticise others. His father’s just awful to be around and I am really afraid that our relationship will end up like theirs. Brenda
He has to see it for himself. Then through his love of his son, he may be able to have the courage to change. Is your description of your husband’s behaviour any different from your son’s as he goes through the terrible twos? Kids are so persistent. They want what they want and without regard for others around them. They will bring down hell and high water IF WE LET THEM to get it. These are their first objective lessons in the use of anger and upset as tools of power and control. Your husband, like his father, knows and uses this method to the detriment of his relationships. Don’t let your son follow suit. Check out your own models. How were differences dealt with in your family? Was there negotiation, fairness, respect for the others and an ability to listen? Or were there degrees of acting out and placation? You must be the fair, firm and consistent model of the behaviours you want to get. Make sure you don’t reinforce bad behaviour by rewarding it in any way. State clearly and firmly after any disrespectful behaviour your zero tolerance for it in both your husband and your son. Be brief and to the point without emotion. Keep emphasising through your son and to your husband that we choose our behaviours, therefore the outcome. Poor behaviour equals poor outcome. Seeing it in his son and hopefully seeing the positive changes in him has the chance to also bring about change in him. Robin. "Camping and caravaning: where you spend a small fortune to live Thoughts like a homeless person."
for the Day
"Some things are just better left unsaid and I usually realize it right after i say them."
Dear Brenda, You have provided an excellent description of the detrimental effects of poor parental models on our behaviour and therefore on our relationships. If Geoff is very defensive about his behaviour and is resistant to calm discussion about it, then you may be able to diplomatically use his concern for his son’s welfare as circuitous way of getting him to look at himself. A discussion about what behaviours we value in our children, people in general, and how we can go about achieving this could also include the effect of models, good and bad. Make sure that if you use models you refer only to your own. Hopefully he may be able to see some of his stuff around this. If you push his parents in his face, he’s most likely to react negatively towards you and any positive change.

One man’s trash is another man’s treasure!
News from The Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club After enjoying field trips to collect various types of gemstone material, members can either display their finds at home in the rough form or take them to the club’s workshop. Once in the workshop it is possible to turn the specimen collected into a cabochon, polished flat face or just saw it in half to see what they have found. Some sawn specimens go straight to the rubbish heap as not all the stones you bring home will be keepers. Others are The club’s diamond saws sliced into slabs and turned into polished cabochons. Sometimes after sawing, the stone’s flat surface is polished as a specimen. To find out if you wish to keep a stone from a field trip, it is Thunder egg halves from Agate necessary to either Creek North Queensland. grind a small face on the stone (dependent on stone size) or saw it in half. If the stone turns out to be no good, you can always place it in your ‘rock garden’. It is much easier to do this than have to say ‘I wish I had brought that certain stone home with me.’ After a stone is sawn the work begins, depending on what you want to achieve with the piece or slab. It may take one hour or several hours to produce the finished item. If you feel as though this type of hobby interests you come along and inspect our workshop where we cut and polish the rocks we find on field trips. The Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club has its rooms located at 46 Ferneydell Street, Ashgrove and is open every Thursday from 9am to noon for cutting and polishing rocks and from 12 noon to 3pm for silverwork. It is also open on Saturday from 1pm to 4pm. The club caters for rock enthusiasts in the North Western area of Brisbane. Visitors and new members are most welcome and if you would like more information about the club please phone John on 3351 1038 or Lloyd on 3351 2093.

Dickson News from your Federal Member for Dickson PETER DUTTON
Dickson Awardee’s for 2020
The 2020 Dickson Awards have seen outstanding local residents rewarded for their hard work and dedication to make our community.
The 2020 Dickson Citizen of the Year is Colin ‘Col’ Chandler. Col is a Highvale resident with Multiple Sclerosis. He is the founder of ‘Goat Track Madness’ the MS fundraiser that he started by declaring he wanted to climb the three kilometre, dirt track with 500m elevation that winds up Mount Nebo, known as the Goat Track, in his wheelchair. The event has been held twice now and has raised over $40,000 for MS QLD. Col is also an ambassador for MS QLD and has created a new app to help people better access the NDIS. Ian ‘Watto’ Watson, was posthumously awarded the Dickson Great Mate award. Watto founded the men’s shed group ‘Shed Happens’ that met in Murrumba Downs, and also wrote books, mentored men and was a great encourager and friend to all. Watto passed away in December 2019 after a long battle with cancer. Bob Millar was awarded the Dickson Local Legend award for his service to the community, including through the Samford Rotary Club, Samford Rural Fire Brigade and his efforts to support the community through new initiatives as a former councillor of both Pine Rivers Shire and Moreton Bay Regional Council. Several local sporting champions were recognised including champion Softball player Madisun Graham, who was awarded Dickson Sports Person of the Year and motorcycle racer Flynn Nicol who was Junior Sports Person of the year. The 2020 Community Group of the Year is the North Pine Historical Society. Their efforts to preserve local history are significant. In particular, their efforts through Old Petrie Town have seen our community retain the character and knowledge of our early years. The Federal Member for Dickson, Peter Dutton, said that he was honoured to recognise champions of our local community. ‘We have seen local residents do some amazing things in the last 12 months, so choosing between the nominations to pick the final awardees was particularly tough this year,’ Mr Dutton said. ‘Col Chandler, the 2020 Dickson Citizen of the Year, is an amazing bloke whom I have gotten to know through his efforts to fundraise for MS with Goat Track Madness. ‘Watto (Ian Watson) is well known by so many around the area for his business teaching learner truck drivers, and of course, his men’s shed group ‘Shed Happens’, I am proud to call him a friend and to honour him with the Inaugural Dickson Great Mate award. ‘Bob Millar has done so much for our commuHistorical

The Ferny Report Mark Furner M.P.
State Member for Ferny Grove
Ferny Grove State High Centre of Excellence completed on time! The $19.9 million Centre of Excellence at Ferny Grove State High School is open to students on time and under budget.
I had the chance to get an early look at the new centre with Executive Principal John Schuh and 2020 School Captain Natalie Peck and I was blown away. The facilities are nothing short of amazing and represent a terrific return on the investment of taxpayers. Announced in June 2018 as part of the Palaszczuk Government’s 2020 Ready program, the centre is comprised of 22 new learning spaces, four science labs and a state-of-the-art STEM design studio. This year there are a record number of students attending Ferny Grove State High and the new centre has been completed to meet this increased need. In addition, a further thirty million dollars in education investments are being made in our local schools this year with announcements on the awarding of other contracts expected shortly. Investing in education is the cornerstone to the future of our state and I am making sure that our local community receives its fair share.
