Sinnamon House: The Legacy of John Sinnamon
By Cathy Booth, Founder of Umoja Orphanage, Kenya
The Rotarian motto, service above self, was a way of life for Mitchelton Rotarian, John Sinnamon.
I was lucky enough to cross paths with John and his lovely wife Karen about 4 years ago for the first time at a Rotary dinner where I was guest speaking about the Umoja project. My goal was to build a self-sustainable children’s village to give orphaned and vulnerable children a second chance at life. John was so supportive of Umoja that he requested to sponsor the first child, before we even secured enough funds to begin building our village. Before we could take children into care, we needed to complete many projects including self-sustainable farming and water, securing the land, and building the first children’s home. John helped us throughout our journey by fundraising outside of Bunnings, hosting fundraising dinners, and garnering support of other Rotarians, including his Club in Mitchelton. He also boosted many of our fundraising campaigns by personally matching donations anonymously at the time, all of which helped us completing the first children’s home for up to 12 children. To our surprise, the first orphans who came into our care were five-month old twins Alexis and Alare, and the Sinnamon family did not hesitate into agreeing to sponsor the adorable pair. Even when John was weeks away from losing his final battle with cancer he was still trying to do everything he could to help us meet our target of funding the second children’s home. John’s support of my Umoja journey is one that I am forever
grateful for, as he always pushed me to keep going even harder to help give these children a better future. The legacy of John Sinnamon is one that I am very privileged to continue, and it was never in question before he became unwell, that we were going to honour John & Karen and the Sinnamon name by naming our second house after the family. We had to surprise him early due to his failing health. I hope you can join me in honouring John by donating to raise the roof of the ‘Sinnamon House’ for orphaned and vulnerable children in Kenya, and join us at the Mitchelton Rotary Club fundraising dinner for Umoja Orphanage. Details are below.

Still Time To Sign On!
Arana Netball Club is now sorting out team selections, following registrations opening online early January and a club sign-on day on Sunday 3rd February for those wanting to talk to club and committee members or to buy uniforms. Although these have occurred, it is not too late to sign on, as teams are not yet finalised. However, anyone still wanting to play with Arana Netball for the 2019 season should register as soon as possible on MyNetball via the club's web site - www.arananetballclub. com.au - or by emailing arananetballclub@gmail.com. Fees are once again $285, reducing by $20 for any subsequent dependent family members. For anyone who has a Qld Government Get Started voucher ($150) this can be redeemed as part of your fees. Selection trials and dates for each age group are notified to those who sign on, and once teams are selected and named, coaches will be allocated and team training can start, usually one week night per week at the courts in Leslie Patrick Park. Downey Park Netball fixtures where Arana plays do not commence until Saturday 27th April, so there will be the opportunity for several weeks of training in advance, even if interrupted by the Easter school holidays. Arana Netball monthly meetings are on the third Monday of each month at the Hills District Community Centre meeting rooms, commencing at 7.30pm. Meetings are open for all connected with or interested in the running of the club to attend. For any further information, please contact the President on 0404 132 007.

LABOR’S HOUSING TAX WILL HIT ALL AUSTRALIANS
Labor’s Housing Tax will hit home values, increase rents and hurt our economy. Labor risks $12bn housing hit
new housing would lead to a fall in 42,000 dwellings construction of up to ,000 fewer over five years and 32 , according to jobs across the country g of Bill Shorten’s independent modellin key property policies.
It’s a lose-lose policy - if you own your own home it will be worth less, and if you rent your home it will cost you more. A growing list of experts warn Labor’s policies will have a negative impact on the economy and property market. It will punish every Australian with equity in their home. Have you ever wondered? The cast from the 2018 production, A Tomb with a View
The Hills Players Inc are up and running again for 2019 and have an exciting program in the works.
They are currently planning a program of one act plays for their first production of the year and they will have more information regarding these acts next month. The Hills Players have been in operation since 1981 and are a small family group who like to bring live theatre to the community for a low cost. Some of their members have also been involved in the South East Queensland Drama Festival to extend their personal acting experience. If you have a dream or secret wish to try out acting or even helping out backstage, please give Margie a call on 3351 4496 or visit www.hillsplayers.com. Alternatively, keep up to date with events by following their Facebook page, www. facebook.com/The-Hills-Players-Inc You don’t have to have any experience, although they are happy to see you if you’ve been involved in little theatre before. The group normally stage three productions each year, but this year they are only planning two due to limited numbers for helping out front of house and backstage. So if you’d like to help out in this way (this is less time-consuming than actually taking on an acting role) please get in touch. The group meet on a Monday evening from 7pm and once in rehearsal they can be found at St Matthew's Hall, Church Road, Mitchelton which is their base. T ENR AKING O FOR LMENT 201 S 9!

Minimising The Risk of Falls
As we age the risk of falling increases for several reasons. Balance relies on eyesight, balance receptors in our ears and our ability to feel the floor from information from our feet and joints. However other factors also increase your risk and advice could be sought from a suitably trained Physiotherapist as they are trained to assess and identify what factors are increasing the likelihood of falls and help reduce those risks. Eyesight: Keep your glasses clean, have regular eyesight tests, and turn on a bedside light when you go to the toilet overnight. Problems in your inner ear (Vestibular changes) can cause dizziness and may be helped by specific treatment by a suitably trained Physiotherapist. Joint stiffness/ swelling: reduces the ability to balance and can be improved with exercise. Strength: loss of strength can slow down your ability to react quickly if you stumble, and can be improved regardless of age. Healthy eating: can maintain muscle mass and strength. Incontinence: hurrying to the toilet can increase the risk of falls particularly at night and is often made worse by not drinking enough water or lack of exercise. Dehydration from lack of water or drinking alcohol: this can affect Blood pressure (see below) and our brain’s reaction times if we stumble. Blood pressure: low blood pressure, or drops in your blood pressure as you change position such as going from lying to standing overnight can make you unsteady. Medication: some medications can have side effects which may cause dizziness. Speak to your GP if a new medication may be making you dizzy.
Poorly fitting footwear or long loose clothing: can make you more likely to slip, trip or stumble. Trip hazards in the home: loose rugs, wires, cluttered floors, poor lighting, slippery or uneven flooring and climbing to reach high cupboards can all potentially lead to falls. Make a plan to get help: Pendant alarms, mobile phones and intercoms can all be used to get help. Have a plan on how someone can get into your house if you fall, to prevent you lying on the floor for a long time. Physios may be able teach you ways of how to get up from the floor safely, or teach your carers to help you get up safely. Physios can also screen for falls risk factors and provide specific exercises to improve balance strength and reduce joint stiffness. PhysioRESOLVES in trained on Falls Risk Assessment and helping you reduce your risk of falls. Call for an appointment today on 0435 087 650

Exercise for the brain & body
We all know there are physical benefits of exercise—it helps you get in shape and lose weight, and it lowers your risk of numerous chronic diseases. But, did you know there are significant mental health benefits of exercise too? Here’s why a regular workout plan is as great for your brain as it is for your body: It’s social: Our relationships are important! When you exercise at Curves, you work out next to supportive, likeminded women and encouraged by our Curves Coaches. Working out decreases your depression risk: According to a recent Australian study, as little as one hour per week of exercise may help prevent a person from getting depressed. Researchers found those who didn’t exercise were 44% more likely to suffer symptoms of depression. Your gym workout protects your brainpower: Physical activity may help ward off dementia as you get older. Aerobic exercise has been found to boost the size of the area of the brain responsible for learning and verbal memory. And there’s more! You know how good you feel at the end of a run, swim, or gym workout. To get the maximum benefits of exercise consistency is key. Join Curves now and experience the benefits of 30 minutes per day for yourself! Your first month is FREE! Phone Janelle on 3354 4455 today!

The New Year brings many commitments and changes. What have you committed to improve this year? Research has found that about half of all adults make New Year’s resolutions. However, fewer than 10% manage to keep them for more than a few months. Researchers from Stanford University investigated what causes people to abandon their commitments and how they can stay motivated and true to their New Year’s resolutions. Many research reports have indicated that the success factor for those people that stick with their new commitments each year is that they have set realistic goals. At Snap Fitness, we are privileged to share in the New Year resolutions of many people. However, it is not widely understood that Fitness Professionals are highly skilled in supporting clients to take their New Year’s resolutions and turn them into realistic, achievable goals to meet the client’s wish to lose weight or become fit. The team at Snap Fitness Arana Hills will carefully listen to your desires to transform yourself this year and will assist you to make it happen. From advice on healthy eating to what makes an effective weight loss program, we have skilled, experienced Fitness Professionals who will assist to make your new year successful. Additionally, we are offering exceptional discounts and free membership periods which makes this New Year – New You more possible than ever. Ali is a busy mum of two boys, and has been working for a palliative care charity that cares for people right across our region. She lost her leg in an accident in 2011, but went on to win gold for Australia. Ali has faced adversity and triumphed. Now Ali will stand up and fight for us.
A future for our young people Like all parents, Ali wants the best for her two boys. She is working hard to reverse billions of dollars in LNP cuts to our schools and TAFE so that young people here can get training and apprenticeships that lead to full-time work. Ali is proud that Labor will deliver $120 million for our new Petrie University campus, creating over 5000 local jobs.
Investing in our community Ali knows that our fast-growing region needs more funding for hospitals and aged care. That is why Ali is opposed to Peter Dutton’s cruel cuts to our local hospitals - $32 million over two years - and cuts to the aged care sector - nearly $2 billion since the Coalition was first elected.

TAX MATTERS From TaxArana
Get your FREE tax checklist!
We are in the second month of the new year already. Have you stuck to (or started) any of your new years resolutions? Don’t sweat it if you haven't - you certainly wouldn't be alone. Last month we gave you our top tips for staying organised for 'tax season': 1. Start a dedicated TAX FOLDER 2. Dedicate one hour, one night a week to tax admin 3. Download MyDeductions (ATO app) for keeping track of receipts We also offered readers a FREE checklist for what you need to have ready for the upcoming tax season. We'd like to extend that offer for the month of February. If you are interested in this FREE checklist, drop in to our office (house) on the corner of Glenlee St and Dawson Parade. We have many clients coming to us, some very sheepish, with their taxes many years overdue. Just like most things we don't like to do, the more you avoid them, the harder it gets to face them. Contact us and we will not only help you tackle these head on, we will work with you to get you on the right track and get you more organised for future tax years. In addition, we are having our next complimentary community BBQ at the front of our offices on Thursday, 28 February at 4pm. We hope to see you there!

COUNSELLOR’S COLUMN with Robin Botic
Dear Robin, I’ve been with my partner for about five years. It was one of those madly-in-love, couldn’t-believe-how-I-felt, couldn’t-beapart-from-each-other type starts. Well I really do love James but he frustrates the heck out of me. I was told by a psychic that I went to see about a year into the relationship that he was my soul mate and the person I was meant to be with. It was really lovely to have that affirmation. My confusion is this: surely if he’s my ‘perfect’ partner, things should be easier. Surely we shouldn’t fight so much. Neither of us wants to give in and our issues never seem to get resolved. I don’t know whether this is a good environment for me to consider bringing children in to. Things should be more idyllic if he’s my perfect one. I don’t want to leave him. I would just like it to be easier. How do I go about making that happen? Jan. Dear Jan, Seems you’re asking two questions here. What exactly constitutes perfection is number one, and question two, which in part has its roots in one: how do I make things easier? We will deal with number one first, and what that implies. We all want to have the perfect partner, and the ideal which you share with many is that this person, this soul mate, should make life blissful, or at least easy for you. This is not necessarily true. In any relationship there should be challenging times that when resolved produce growth. From my experience this is what relationship is about. Love is a sugar-coated pill that holds you together while the medicine for growth goes down. Why else would we stay and try to confront and resolve these difficulties except that we love and wish to stay with the beloved? It’s life, the universe’s catch-22 of black humour that we humans are stuck with. Your perfect partner is not just the one that loves, supports and ticks a lot of your boxes. They are also the one who challenges you to face yourself and grow. Out of this comes number two. In what way are you being challenged? What is it you are both being faced with, through the other? Ask yourself: Why do I need to be right? What’s that about for me? Is it about the old dilemma of: I need to have him agree so there are no differences and I will feel safer in the relationship. This is because I won’t have to be challenged by his differences and risk rejection and possible loss. The paradox is that the opposite is true. Inability to discuss, allow and accept difference is what causes the problem. There should be differences. Often the
complement of the two differences creates a more unified range of options that enable you to deal with life more successfully. For example, someone who is single-minded working with someone who is able to multi-task, when both those abilities are used together, gives a new dimension of cope-ability and support. The other possible cause of our need to be right, and which I’ve spoken about before, is the belief that if my opinions, ideas etc. are ‘right’, and therefore should be accepted, I am an okay and acceptable or ‘right’ person. Our value as a person is based on far more than the opinions, ideas of positions we hold. These can change and do in life, but our intrinsic essence and our ability to manifest and expand on this, does not. What are you really arguing about? Have an agreement, when you are responsive to each other, that the next time you see a difference about to erupt, that you try listening to understand the other, not to be right. When it is your turn to express your opinion, start by watching your breath. See that it is calm. Check your posture, try to relax and empty your mind to listen to what is being said. Our usual ploy is that before the other gets two sentences out, we have a thousand answering thoughts in our own head, and our main interest is in getting that heard. Our partner is doing the same, and neither is really listening to understand or to resolve the issue. How lasting is the importance of thinking you have won what often is a silly argument? What you need to do is to keep exploring the levels of the feelings that are being challenged within you. These feelings are the REAL subjects of discussion, and what is needed to be addressed by both of you. Often you will find that although there is a superficial difference, the feeling-based thought below is the same i.e. a fear of rejection or loss of respect, value etc. There’s an old saying: Is it better to be ‘right’ or LOVED? Robin

The first of the Tramway operations in Brisbane.
Tramway operations first commenced on the 10th August 1885 when the Metropolitan Tramway and Investment Company introduced horse-drawn trams such as the one pictured above.
Eventually, this service covered some 15 miles (24 Kms) and serviced Logan Road, West End, Breakfast Creek, New Farm and the Exhibition Buildings (near the Ekka grounds.) The cars carried 16 seated passengers and could have another 14 standing. The service ran from 1885 until electrification began in 1898 and was terminated in the following year. Brisbane Tramway Museum have a replica tram (pictured below) that is built on an original chassis and has been drawn by two horses on the remaining track at Belmont/Carina back in 1979 when the Queensland Centenary was celebrated. It underwent further maintenance and restoration in 2012/13 in order to keep it in fully operational condition. April of this year will mark the 50th Anniversary of the last tram trip in Brisbane. On the evening of the 13th Apil 1969, 554 was driven into its shed for the last time ending some 70 years of electric tram services in Brisbane. More news of commemorative activities from the museum will appear in future editions of The Hills Echo. In addition to the fleet of operational trams, the Brisbane Tramway Museum also has a vast range of books and DVD’s on the history of Brisbane’s Trams and Trolley Buses. Why not drop in next Sunday afternoon and have a ride and a browse? It’s a great day out for all the family.

Annual Rotary Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony: 26 January 2019
The first official engagement of the year was the Australian Day Citizenship Ceremony hosted by Ashgrove/The Gap Rotary at The Gap State High School on Australia Day. This year 35 residents (32 adults and three children) became Australian citizens witnessed by family members, friends and well-wishers. Our new Australian friends took their ‘Oath of Allegiance’ and were presented with their citizenship certificates in an informal and friendly setting. This was my fourth Citizenship Ceremony as Presiding Officer and the 70th anniversary of Australian citizenship. The local citizenship ceremonies have proven very popular over the years and enable new citizens and their communities to come together and celebrate this occasion. Congratulations to all those residents who received their Citizenship on Australia Day!

2019 Dickson Awards
On Australia Day, I hosted my annual Dickson Awards for 2019; recognising the contributions of outstanding individuals in our community. This event is one of my favourite things on the calendar and is a fantastic way to start the year off. The 2019 Dickson Citizen of the Year is Carmel Bond, a stalwart of our community who has done a huge amount to ensure Dayboro’s heritage is protected and the town’s history is remembered. Also receiving awards were a number of Veterans and former Defence Force Personnel including Nicole Bradley, the CoCaptain at the Invictus games in October 2018, who was named Dickson Sports Person of the Year. It was my pleasure to award Denise Forrester, from the Ferny Districts Amateur Fishing Club, a volunteer award for her work as honourary treasurer for 20 years. This is a huge commitment and has seen Denise work closely with many in our community during that time. For more information and to see the full list of award winners, please visit my website peterdutton.com.au

contributing to the social, cultural and economic development of our nation. I know that our new citizens, who pledged their commitment to our country on Australia Day, will make a wonderful contribution to our community. As a result of the dedicated work of members of the Rotary Clubs of Paddington, Ashgrove/The Gap, Kenmore and Mitchelton, and the Probus Club of Indooroopilly these events were very special and memorable occasions for our newest Australians.
Australia Day
Once again, Australia Day in the Ryan electorate was busy with several events and activities. I had the pleasure of attending many Citizenship Ceremonies and welcoming a number of new Australians. The day celebrated not only individuals, but also their families, parents and children, who have uprooted their lives in their country of birth to begin a new chapter in our great country. Each year thousands of people migrate to Australia,

DELIVERING FOR LOCAL SCHOOLS
As students head back to school for another year I am pleased to report on the state of just some of the infrastructure projects in our local schools: My 2017 election commitment to seal the overflow carpark at Grovely State School is now complete and delivered in full with a bonus drop off/ pick up area. The total project cost was $200,000. I would like to extend a big thank you to the staff, parents and P&C members who worked so hard to help me deliver this great outcome for our local community. Ferny Grove State High School’s $18m Multi-Storey Learning Centre at Ferny Grove State High School has begun construction and will deliver 14 classrooms, four science labs, four collaborative spaces and two flexible learning areas to cater for projected expansion in students at the school by 2020. Weather permitting, the work is slated for completion by December 2019 just in time for the 2020 school year. The refurbishment of Block E at Patricks Road State School will include new carpet, windows, electrical works, storage and a repaint at a cost of $453,752. This work is long overdue and will be completed by the Department of Housing and Public Works before the end of this year.
DELIVERING FOR COMMUNITY GROUPS
Does your not-for-profit organisation need funding for new equipment and upgrades to facilities? If so, Round 100 of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund is now open for applications. Applications close on Thursday 28 February 2019.
