Young Lad Lends Legacy a Hand
Grovely State School student Ashton Lochore has undertaken a challenge that will benefit his favourite charity Legacy.
Ashton had been competing in Glitz pageants for about a year and when the opportunity came to try a different kind of pageant, he was excited to give it a go. He entered the Mr Diamond Australia pageant which is more than a ‘beauty pageant’ instead celebrating the beauty and diversity of everyone. ‘Pageants in general have helped me overcome my stage fright and feel more confident,’ said Ashton. ‘But Mr Diamond has also given me the opportunity to work on my public speaking skills and support a charity that meant something to me.’ The first step was to select a charity to support in the required fundraising. Since Ashton’s stepfather is a member of our Defence Force, Ashton chose Legacy as his desired recipient. The next task was to secure sponsorship and 10 year old Ashton started door knocking local businesses seeking assistance. Mitchelton Branch of Go Gecko Metropolitan volunteered to be Ashton’s major sponsor in his quest. And so the hard work of fundraising began. Ashton has utilised a variety of fundraising activities including auctions, raffles, marathon running, collection boxes and BBQs at Anaconda. Grovely State School has provided assistance and encouragement with a free dress day to support Ashton’s cause and permission to sell Legacy badges to his schoolmates. To date, Ashton has raised over $3,500 and with eight weeks to go he hopes to get near or surpass his target of $5,000. Ashton has received unstinting support from his family and friends as he raises the awareness of Legacy throughout the local community. His untiring zest for fundraising for his chosen charity will see him continuing on this path until the pageant finals on 6th and 7th April. Upcoming events include a current raffle and a Charity Pageant which will take place at Gaythorne RSL on 18th March. For further enquiries email Ashton on ashtonmda18@ outlook.com. Ashton’s journey can be followed via his Facebook page https://m.facebook. com/MDA18NationalFinalist/ All funds Ashton raises are deposited into an online fundraising page that was set up by Legacy Brisbane. Donations can be made online at any time or cash donations can be made at the following businesses who have a Legacy donation tin: Go Gecko Metropolitan, Mitchelton; Go2 Health, Everton Park; Oz Spy, Everton Park; Bodiez 24/7 fitness, Everton Park; Burrito Bar, Everton Park; Terry White Chemist, Brookside; Sports Co, Brookside; Star Discount Chemist, Arana Hills and Athletes Foot, Chermside. www.hillsecho.com

Mitchie Makers Market Lost
The popular Mitchie Makers Markets will no longer be held on the second Friday of every month at the Mitchelton Football Club.
Market enthusiasts will be stunned by the unexpected news. Market Convenor Steve York had no notice that the Markets would not continue at the same venue in 2018. An email from the Mitchelton Football Club was received by Mr York on 22nd January detailing the closure of the market. No further explanation was provided. This sad news was unanticipated by the market organisers and community members alike. The markets had been running for two years and had contined to grow from strength to strength over this time. The market is also known for giving back to the community

through its support of the Mitchelton Football Club and providing an opportunity for small local businesses to promote and sell their products. ‘Some really good memories over that time and met some wonderful people. The growth of the markets exceeded everyone’s expectations and it seemed set to continue until we reached our current setback. Thanks for your
help in supporting the locally handmade movement… In the end I feel that everything which could have been done had been done to keep the markets running in their current format,’ Mr York said. The last market was held on the 22nd of December 2017. Mr York is currently seeking a new venue for the Makers Market but is unable to guarantee the Market will continue.
Stay up to date with the Markets by joining their Facebook page www.facebook.com/ MitchieMakersMarkets or visit their website www. mitchiemakers.org.au

BOUTIQUE DEVELOPER FOCUSES ON COMMUNITY
A Streetscape of Highbury By Mosaic
Mosaic Property Group is creating a new urban utopia in Upper Kedron and feel privileged to be joining the suburb they describe as ‘one of Brisbane’s best kept secrets’.
Highbury by Mosaic, a collection of 26 exclusive homes set in a green pocket at the foot of the picturesque D’aguilar Range, is joining the portfolio of boutique residential projects that the Brisbane-based developer is known for throughout south-east Queensland. Highbury is a primary focus for Mosaic’s community engagement team, who worked closely with the local council to reach a sensitive outcome in line with the community’s vision. ‘We believe a community focused approach that is proactive, transparent and authentic is essential to our continued relationship with the community, and best outcomes can only
be achieved through a shared vision,’ said Brook Monahan, the Managing Director of Mosaic. Mosaic understood the need to be conscious of the neighbourhood plan and community concerns surrounding lot size and product quality. Therefore, Highbury offers a diverse mix of contemporary homes that showcase latest design trends on generous lots ranging from 450sqm to 2700sqm. ‘We listened to concerns regarding density and connectivity and significantly reduced our number of dwellings on our application and added a public walkway through to the park,’ said Brook Monahan. ‘Our main objective moving forward into construction is to ensure residents are informed of what’s occurring in their neighbourhood and have access to information explaining what’s happening during the entire process via our website and Facebook.’ Furthermore, Mosaic is contributing $350,000 towards infrastructure charges that will improve roads, parks and more, and a further $350,000 to restoring the waterway corridor at the back of the site. ‘We also participated in the Upper Kedron Community Tree Planting. It’s what a good neighbour would do, and we believe it’s our duty to act as a good neighbour,’ said Brook Monahan. At just 12km from Brisbane’s CBD, Highbury allows residents to be close to never to be built-out bushland that will overlook a protected, green and tranquil wildlife enclave. The fully turn-key homes range in price from $676,500 to $819,000 and include high quality finishes such as 900mm kitchen appliances and stone benchtops as standard. Construction began end of January 2018. For more information, please call 1300 336 989 or visit www. mosaicproperty.com.au

Serving Samford for 20 Years CHOOSING THE BEST SCHOOL SHOES FOR YOUR CHILD Australian school children can spend up to 40 hours per week in their school shoes, so choosing the best shoes for your child’s feet is vital. These are Foot Health 4 Kids’ top tips for buying school shoes: 1. Measure both feet for length and width – they are rarely the same; 2. Have shoes fitted with school socks on – sock thickness can affect size; 3. Choose shoes that are not too heavy – heavy school shoes on young children can lead to leg and foot muscle fatigue; 4. Check for growing room – there should be at least 1cm of space between the end of the longest toe and the end of the shoe insole; 5. Check for toe wiggle room – your child should be able to freely move their toes without touching the end of the shoe; 6. Check the fit every school holidays – young children grow rapidly! For help fitting school shoes, see the trained shoe fitters at our clinic or learn more at our website: www.foothealth4kids.com.au

Australia Day Celebrations a Success
Australia Day celebrations held at Samford Museum were very well attended.
The Samford Museum
Visitors thoroughly enjoyed feature displays of vintage vehicles and machinery, special activities and entertainment. Old school days pen and ink copy book writing was a favorite with parents and children. Robbing the stingless native bees and extracting the honey by ‘Bob the Bee Man’ drew good audiences. Tasting the honey was a bonus. Ruby Sarsfield of Ferny Hills Thank you to everyone sampling native bee honey. for making the day so successful for Museum and visitors. Not too late to join a netball team Arana Netball
With Sign-on date past, Arana Netball Club is now conducting selection trials over the first couple of weeks of February.
Once players are then organised into teams, to make the best combinations to field balanced and competitive teams, they will meet coaches and training will commence. Based on current registrations, Arana Netball can still accommodate more players to complete the number of teams being formed. This applies to prospective players from 8 years to Opens. So it is not too late to sign on to play this year – email the Club arananetballclub@gmail.com or phone the President, Jenna, on 0404 132 007. Although registrations are on-line this year, players should not be discouraged by this – just make contact and you will be assisted. Such playing enquiries should be made as soon as possible, as later sign-ons will be accepted only in age groups where numbers are still low once teams have been organised. Uniform enquiries can be made to Kym, Uniform Convenor, on 0407 038 913. With Downey Park fixtures commencing late this year, on Saturday 21st April, after the Easter school holidays, teams will
Dr Sue Phillips B.V.Sc Dr. Stephen Pollock B.V.Sc. and Associates
have several weeks of training to work with team mates and coaches, to be prepared when games start. For non-competitive teams, Nippers and 10 Yrs, there is also the chance for extra practice with the Pine Rivers Modified carnival scheduled for Sunday 18th March, (at Bray Park). Throughout the off-season, and now that selection trials are underway for the new season, the Committee meets monthly and works constantly to ensure the smooth running of the Club. Two positions remain unfilled at this point, Assistant Treasurer and Publicity Officer. If a senior player or a parent is interested in taking on one of these roles, which will take pressure off other Committee members, please contact the Club or come along to the next meeting, on Monday 19th February, at 7.30pm, in the Arana Sports meeting room at the Hills District Community Centre, Dawson Parade, Arana Hills. Remember, for any further information about Arana Netball Club, there is also the Facebook page and the web site, www. arananetballclub.com.au.

Out and About in The Gap Ward With Councillor Steven Toomey
Annual Rotary Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony 26 January 2018
The first official engagement of the year is the Australian Day Citizenship Ceremony hosted by Ashgrove/The Gap Rotary at The Gap State High School on Australia Day. This year 46 residents became Australian citizens witnessed by family members, friends and well-wishers. Our new Australian friends took their ‘Oath of Allegiance’ and were presented with their citizenship certificates in an informal and friendly setting. This was my third Citizenship Ceremony as Presiding Officer and the 69th anniversary of Australian citizenship. I could think of no better way to celebrate Australia Day than to welcome these new citizens from many countries as they take the ‘Oath of Allegiance’ to Australia and its people. The local citizenship ceremonies have proven very popular over the years and enable new citizens and their communities to come together and celebrate this occasion. Congratulations to all those residents who received their Citizenship on Australia Day!

The Lord Mayor’s Australia Day Awards
The Lord Mayor’s 2018 Australia Day Awards is an annual event which recognises Brisbane’s unsung heroes and pays tribute to people in our community who have gone above and beyond to improve the lives of others. These Awards have a number of categories including Citizen of the Year, Senior and Young Citizen of the Year, Cultural Arts Awards, Lord Mayor’s Green Heart Award and Australia Day Achievements Awards. It was a privilege to attend this year’s awards ceremony and I am delighted that three residents in The Gap Ward were honoured for their work and commitment to our community. Mr Richard Speechley of The Gap was recognised with the Lord Mayor’s Australia Day Achievement Award for his involvement with the Queensland Youth Orchestras, the formation of the first Gap Scout Group, and work promoting gardening, sporting and historical groups within our local community. Richard is still busy within our community and many of you would read his regular column in the Western Echo. Mr Nurdon Serico of The Gap was awarded the Lord Mayor’s Cultural Arts Award. As a well-respected Gubbi Gubbi/ Kabi Kabi Elder he has a long, strong and proud history of working to bring together Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. Now retired he devotes his time to sharing and preserving his culture. We are privileged to have Uncle Nurdon living within our community where his cultural knowledge is passed onto future generations. Mr Kelvin Barfoot of Ashgrove was awarded the Lord Mayor’s Green Heart Individual Award for his work in re-activating the Brisbane Habitat site in Tennis Avenue, Ashgrove. Along with the support of dedicated local volunteers the group have undertaken weeding, flood friendly planting and have installed habitat boxes to support local wildlife. Congratulations to all the residents across Brisbane who were recipients in this year’s 2018 Lord Mayor’s Australia Day Awards. www.hillsecho.com

New Cervical Cancer Test
Women in the Ryan electorate can now access a new and more effective screening test for cervical cancer. The new human papillomavirus (HPV) test will prevent up to 30 per cent more women from developing cervical cancer because it detects HPV, an early risk indicator for cervical cancer. The procedure to collect the sample is the same. For more information on the new cervical cancer test, women can talk to their health professionals, visit www.cancerscreening.gov.au/cervical or call 13 15 56.
Australia Day
Once again, Australia Day in the Ryan electorate was busy with events and activities. I was delighted to attend several Citizenship Ceremonies organised by our local Rotary and Lions Clubs to celebrate our newest Australians.
OLDER PERSONS ADVOCACY NETWORK A new, free support network is now available to help older people in Ryan navigate their legal and aged care rights. Available to all residents aged 55 and over. Older Ryan residents, their famillies or carers in need of advocacy should go to www.opan.com.au or call 1800 700 600.

Australia Day in Dickson
As the Minister for Immigration, I am lucky enough to welcome in many new citizens as Australians. There is something extra special about citizenship ceremonies held on Australia Day and it is a great privilege to share in the joy and excitement of our newest citizens as they are welcomed as fellow Australians. I was proud to attend citizenship ceremonies in Samford and Strathpine.
Dickson Community Awards
I held my annual Dickson Community Awards in conjunction with the Samford citizenship ceremony. The awards recognise people who, through volunteer work or contributions above and beyond their normal activities, have made our community a better place. This year I presented 10 awards to individuals and groups who have made outstanding contributions to our local area.
The Dickson Citizen of the Year award was a joint award this year which went to David and Linda Horstmann. The Horstmanns have done exceptional work for our local community and deserve much recognition for their efforts. Over the years they have helped hundreds of young people in need through Youthcare Pine Rivers, and have saved and protected many koalas whilst running Pine Rivers Koala Care. I was proud to present them with the Dickson Citizens of the Year Award.

It would appear that the extra delays have been caused by the roadworks at Settlement Road which has caused altered traffic flows pushing more cars into the Samford Road corridor. These roadworks are being conducted under Brisbane City Council direction to accommodate the new Bunnings store opening in April. The roadworks are expected to be concluded 12 February.
BULLYING AND CYBERBULLYING
The tragic incidents of youth suicide linked to bullying and cyberbullying is a national concern. Every child should have the opportunity of a good education free of bullying and harassment. In order to secure a national approach the Premier has obtained the Prime Minister’s agreement to include bullying and cyberbullying on the agenda for the 9 February meeting of the Council of Australian Governments. Discussions will focus on key topics including: • The influence of social media on bullying and cyber-bullying; • The adequacy of existing legislation, support and education tools and services for victims, children and parents; • The roles of parents, children, community organisations and governments in tackling bullying and cyber-bullying.
It was a great pleasure to catch up with Australia’s newest citizens at the GVK Lions Citizenship Ceremony on Australia Day.
On Monday 29 January, The Premier held a roundtable with Queensland stakeholders and Ministers and Members of Parliament, two of whom are former school principals, to lay critical groundwork on this very complex problem and identify possible solutions. The Premier committed the Palaszczuk Government to: • establishing a Queensland Anti-Bullying Taskforce, to inform the development of a new anti-bullying framework for Queensland; • urgently providing an additional $60,000 to yourtown, which operates Kids Helpline and Parentline; and • launching a public awareness campaign informing parents and children of antibullying initiatives underway with activities to coincide with the National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence on 16 March. We need to consider what more can be done in community groups, as communities and governments to address bullying and to provide children with a safe and secure environment in which they will feel protected if they report bullying. As a White Ribbon Ambassador, I would appreciate any feedback from the community regarding this proposal.

The anti has been upped to bring you back into the fold and make you behave the way they have come to expect you to. Let’s look at the facts. Your mother’s illness: she was in with Robin Botic hospital for several weeks. But are you a mind-reader or psychic? Check out your friends. What happens in such Dear Robin, emergencies with them? As far as I’m aware what is I am feeling really guilty about my behaviour towards my expected to happen is that those in the know ring to let others family, particularly my mother. I am wondering if I am a know. These are the basic rules of communication. When self-serving selfish pig as per my sister’s description, or I am you don’t follow these rules, what’s the agenda? It’s about and have been the successful victim of emotional blackmail withholding, and that is about power, control and in your Howard-family style. case, punishment as well. My wife is very supportive of me and I suppose it was she It was up to them to have rung you. Drop the guilt. You did who enabled me to start seeing the tricks they use. I have felt not know your mother was going to get sick and your nonfor as long as I can remember that it was my job to keep the contact did not cause it. You were, I suggest, deliberately women in the family happy. That’s what dad did, everything not contacted to make you feel extra lousy for not playing mum wanted. You were made to feel you had to or there was their game. It’s almost like ‘We’ll teach him for not ringing.’ hell to pay, and you were the worst piece of dirt in the world. There are two areas your guilt seems to be coming from: My needs etcetera were non-existent in the face of my parents’ 1) She was sick and I didn’t know – how could you? demands. We are always expected to pay court to them, ring 2) She could have died – REALITY CHECK – she didn’t, them, bring them presents to let them know how important so why are you acting or feeling like it has. they are to us etcetera. If I didn’t see or ring them as often as they wanted, they would really get stuck into me and my If you have not as yet, consider a discussion with your parents wife about my poor unloving behaviour. It’s taken me some about why you did what you did, and that in the future you years and lot of will power to put more distance and time see it only fair and reasonable that the duty of contact should be reciprocal. between these contacts. When it comes to feeling that you are being emotionally This Easter, however, after a particularly nasty family blackmailed in the future, say what you are feeling is argument about my lack of attention, I decided without telling happening as it is happening. Name the game. Don’t expect them, that I would not contact them just to see how long it understanding or even a fair hearing. If you disagree say was before they bothered to contact me. Because it is always so. The most important thing for you is that you can state what me, never them, and I think there should be some reciprocity you think and act on it without giving into their reactivity about this. Well, my sister rang two weeks ago and really or demands. went for me because my mother was very sick and had been in hospital for several weeks. She said if I was any sort of Robin decent son I would have bothered to ring as I should have and I would have found out. Mum was very sick and by her accounts could have died. I feel dreadful that to prove a point I wasn’t there to support her, and maybe not been able to say goodbye if she had died. Brian Howard.
Counsellor’s Column
Dear Brian, You have been there for your mother – too much. And to your own detriment. Your mother’s illness was used as an absolute trump card in the emotional manipulation stakes. You were seeing pretty clearly prior to your mother’s illness the game that your family played. The fear of her loss and how you felt about that has confused your ability to see it is still the same game.

THUMBS UP THUMBS DOWN THUMBS DOWN to the Dept. of Chaos and
Despair (Qld Rail) cutting down on weekend train services during the Commonwealth Games. Brisbane cannot pretend to be a modern city until public transport improves and this lot are running backwards. THUMBS UP to free swimming lessons for all school children - just not in Qld it seems. THUMBS DOWN to all the Qld cricketers playing Big Bash finals. These same guys were not good enough to be selected for the Heat who finished last. Why do we export all our best cricketers? Maybe we should keep the talent and export the Qld cricket administration. THUMBS UP to Bill Shorten making his position clear on the Adani mine. He is for it in the Longman by election and against it in the Batman by election. Interesting if those elections are on the same day. THUMBS DOWN to Samford Road at peak hours officially classified as CHOKKA! The huge push by pollies for growth at all costs and zero infrastructure has now turned Brissie roads into the same chaos as Sydney and Melbourne.
