Fitness News Blast LET’S TALK ABOUT STRENGTH

At Curves we are committed to improve the quality of women’s lives. Strength training is an essential form of exercise for women. It helps prevent illness and keeps our bodies from ageing. Not many women are aware of this. Without strength training we may see gradual changes in body shape and our health may decline. We have long maintained that strength training is the missing link in women’s fitness. Our goal is to educate all women on its benefits. We want everyone to know that Strength Training will improve the quality of their life in the future. Curves members are full of spirit, because they know that Strength Training can change lives for the better, ensuring they can lead a healthy and active lifestyle. We want it not only for our members, but also for those we love. We genuinely believe in the Curves workout and the benefits of Strength Training – and in working hard and getting results. I am truly passionate about what Curves provides women in our community. It’s more than a gym - it’s a club where you can feel like you belong. My team and I are committed to improving the quality of the lives of women in Mitchelton and the Hills District communities. We look forward to helping you personally get fitter and healthier, here at Curves Mitchelton. Call us on 3354 4455 today. Janelle Curves Mitchelton, Level 1, Brookside Shopping Centre

Spinal Health and Yoga

Statistics say that most of us will suffer with back pain/restricted movement through the spine at some stage in our lives. For some people our first experience with Yoga is from taking advice from a Doctor or Physio. So why is Yoga so good for pain/spinal mobility? 1. Slow controlled movement By engaging our deep postural muscle. With no explosive propelling large movements that use our Global larger muscles as the driving force. We reduce the risk of injury and create a stable base for movement. 2. Meditation When we visulise and focus inwardly on the simple movement at hand we are actually firing up new neural pathways in our brain. Creating stronger association within our brain and deep postural muscles, without this connection and awareness between Brain and Body we develop bad movement patterns that inevitably result in long term reoccurring pain. So working not only on the Muscles in the back but also the neural responses within the brain to help us with more fluid effortless movement. Yoga works both in the physical and the cognitive aspects of your body’s movement. Helping to create a more wholistic approach to reducing back pain. Local Sports Physiotherapist shares some tips from the Australian Tennis Open

This is Kirsty McNab’s (Sports Physiotherapist at Physiologix, upstairs at The Gap Health and Racquet Club) 10th Year working as a physio at the Australian Tennis Open, no mean feat! Here she shares a few tricks from the top. We often don’t realise how much hard work we have to put into keeping our bodies injury free. In the world of elite tennis, don’t put in the hard yards in injury prevention or injury rehab and you ain’t playing. So what are a few tricks we can learn on injury prevention: 1. Know what strains your job has on your body Sit at a computer all day and your neck and shoulders are tight, your core is weak, the muscles at front of your hips and the back of your thighs get short and tight. All of this pulls the body out of its best alignment and makes it susceptible to injury. You should be stretching the front of your shoulders, strengthening the back of them. You need to stretch the front of your hips and the back of your thighs, and you need to have a good core stability program. 2. Know the strains your hobbies put on your body If you garden you must have good ability to bend, meaning flexibility in the backs of the legs, an ability to bend your back and knees, and good leg and core muscles to support you as you squat and lean over. You must have strong shoulders and be able to keep your shoulders back as you do things, not getting lazy and letting your shoulders slump into a rounded posture. 3. Know what stresses your activities can cause What do you need to walk or run or cycle well? Which muscles must be flexible, which need to be strong, and what is the best technique. 4. Put time into looking after yourself! In tennis, we call it ‘body management’ time. You need to be working on a core stability program and stretching at least 3 times a week…..even 10mins each time is better than nothing. 5. Recovery is everything. If muscles feel tight and tired, stretching can help but massage is essential. Our athletes are in 1-2 times a week. If you haven’t the time or finances to see either of our amazing Physiologix remedial massage therapists then purchase a foam roller and learn from us the multiple ways you can massage out your own tight muscles. A massage ball to lean against the wall and get into tight spots also works wonders. And the Dr Graemes electric massager we sell takes the hard work out of doing massage for yourself www.hillsecho.com

6. Do your physio exercises There is no point getting to the physio, finding out what is wrong and then not doing the exercises. Exercise rehab is how you really see big changes and improvements in the body. Make time to do your rehab. You need to put in a little hard work if you want to see the best results Physiologix, has highly experienced therapists, working at the highest level.
