Women’s Shed Powers into 2021

While the Men’s Shed movement is well established within Brisbane, the sister movement of the Women’s Shed is far less so. However, that is soon set to change with the formation of the Women’s’ Shed at Ferny Grove (WSFG)—a first of its kind in Brisbane. It’s also one of the few across Australia with a primary focus on wood and metal working.

Just like it’s male counterpart, the WSFG will be a communitybased, non-profit organisation that will provide a safe and inclusive space for women to work on projects, along with offering a place for friendship, company, and an all-round enjoyable time. And to clear up any confusion—no, this is not a thinly-veiled arts, crafts, and knitting group! Members of the Women’s Shed can expect the full Men’s Shed experience, with woodworking practices and power tool use at their command. For centuries, household handy work was typically a job assigned to the man of the house. However, in our modern world where many women are living independently and often outliving their partners, skills honed in Women’s Sheds around Australia are becoming increasingly useful. The need for this movement in our community could not be greater. At the suggestion of Brisbane Tramway Museum Honorary Secretary, Don Willsher, an Expression of Interest meeting was held at The Brisbane Tramway Museum in early March. WSFG Steering Committee Chair, Shan Fleming said the response from the initial session was overwhelming - clearly indicating a communal desire for this facility. ‘The group was blown away by the numbers that turned up

N E W NA M E , N E W LO GO, SAM E G R E AT T E A M !

with almost 100 women across all age groups showing up or emailing to express their interest. At this stage we are working through how to accommodate as many as we can from those who signed up on the day, which is a nice problem to have,’ said Shan. What is also really exciting about the establishment of the WSFG is that it will be the first Women’s Shed of its kind to ever grace Brisbane ! The closest one is in Logan, and its founding members made the effort of attending the Expression of Interest session to share their positive experiences and learnings. Now, with a WSFG Steering Committee formed, and weekly meetings taking place to secure insurances and complete administrative duties, the organisation is well on its way to opening its doors. It is hoped that workshops will commence by mid/end April at The Brisbane Tramway Museum, Ferny Grove. Just like at the Men’s Shed, members will pay an annual membership and session fee to help cover costs and will need to bring PPE (Personal Protective Equipment). Sessions are anticipated to be held on Wednesdays and Thursdays however, numbers for each session are strictly capped to 12 for safety reasons so if you are interested in joining the group, get in touch with them ASAP to join the waitlist on theshedatfernygrove@outlook.com. So, women of Brisbane, what are you waiting for? Come on down and get your hands dirty! Our front cover image features the Women’s Shed at Ferny Grove Steering Committee. Donations Get Cubs Camping again

By Grovely Mitchelton Cub Scout Erin Skipworth (aged 10). Photography by fellow Cub Scout Leader Rebecca Baxter, ‘Kestrel’.

GMS Cubs with Leaders Ann Serin ‘Wallaby’ and Sean Duncan ‘Wobbegong’

On the 7th of March, the Grovely Mitchelton Cub Scout community came together for our first camp in over a year at Samford Scout den with new gear generously donated by the Arana Leagues Club, on Dawson Parade.

Last year was quiet for many including the Scouts who were affected by the COVID 19 restrictions, which included outdoor camping. This meant Grovely Mitchelton Scout den couldn’t provide enough tents to allow the one child per tent rule, so all camps were cancelled. This year’s camp was very pleasant and comfortable in our brand-new tents. We all all had our own space - and, as a bonus for our Leaders, there was a lot less chatter at lights out. On the camp we all enjoyed some free play, cricket and hand ball was on! Afterwards we had a delicious dinner then we all took turns telling stories, jokes and singing songs around the campfire with the (not so) roasted marshmallows. Everyone slept

REALLY well that night and woke up to the beautiful sound of black cockatoos over Baden-Powell Park. It was so sad to miss out on camps last year because of COVID, but thanks to the Leagues Club, we can finally experience the outdoors again! All together I think we can all agree that everyone had a marvellous time out at Samford Cub den. Thank you to our host den, our tireless Leaders and to Arana Leagues Club for the opportunity to do what Cubs do best. Happy Camping!

Prestigious New Play To Defibrillator For Community Access Hit The Hills Next Month With 2020 behind them, The Hill’s Players are back to business as usual.

Tony and Debbie Sharrock Our community is full of wonderful generosity, and Tony and Debbie Sharrock are prime examples of this.

As proud members of the Ferny Hills district community for 17 years, Tony and Debbie wanted to show their support by providing funding for a defibrillator for the local community kindy, Willmore Kindergarten. Debbie said, ‘although we don’t have children, we feel a strong connection to Willmore through its Director, Linda Meinicke, and love the idea that the kindergarten is thinking of expanding their role as a community group through the purchase of a defibrillator.’ Last year marked the kindergarten’s 50th anniversary and Tony and Debbie also celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary. To mark their silver anniversary they decided to buy the defibrillator as a gift to each other - and the community.

2021 kicked off with the Annual General Meeting, which was held on the 1st February and saw a reshuffle of roles to keep things interesting. In other news, The Hills Players are super excited to announce that they will finally be performing ‘Always a Bridesmaid’ by Jesse Jones, Nicholas Hope and Jamie Wooten Pat Cook, arranged through MTI Australasia. It's been a long time coming and the play's script is an absolute delight, not only making it a fun play to see, but a whole lot of fun for the cast to perform. Be sure to lock a date in to see the play. Performances are scheduled for 7th, 8th , 14th and 15th May at 7.30pm at St Matthews Church Hall, Church Road, Mitchelton. Ticket prices are $15 (adult) and $10 (seniors and students). Bookings can be made by calling 3351 4496 or 3355 7319. Rehearsals for the comedy set in a ‘Southern State of America’ are in full swing. The cast are really enjoying bringing their characters of Kari, Libby-Ruth, Sedalia, Monette and Deedra to Monday and Wednesday rehearsals each week. The Southern accents have proved interesting to perfect, but the cast are definitely on track, but I guess you can be the judge on the night. The Hills Players will also continue their monthly meetings on the 1st Monday of every month at St Mathews Hall, Mitchelton. If you’d like to be involved, please feel free to pop along, or email HillsPlayers@gmail.com More information can be found on their website www.thehillsplayers.com

Anzac Spirit at the Samford Museum

The Samford Museum is busy making preparations for their Anzac Day commemorations on the 25th April. Admission to the museum will be free and the museum will be open from 9am to 4pm on the day. The Queensland Great War Society will participate in the Anzac Day commemorations for the first time and will stage a display in the museum grounds. Along with local servicemen and women who served in all wars, the American servicemen will also be featured who trained from 1941-1943 in the districts surrounding their Camp Strathpine headquarters. To educate and keep the children entertained, there will also be Anzac focused children’s activities available on the day, too. If you are feeling peckish, take advantage of the freshly made damper drizzled with syrup served with Billy tea that will be on sale during the day, along with a sausage sizzle. As always, research enquiries for local service persons and local topics welcome. The team at the Brisbane Tramway Museum needs your help to commemorate the last tram trip in Brisbane!!!

Some 52 years ago, in April 1969, the last tram ran in Brisbane. The museum will commemorate this historic event again this April with a ‘Night Run’ on Saturday 17th April, from 4pm to 8pm. Patrons will enjoy unlimited rides on the fleet of vintage trams, from the oldest tram built in 1901 to the youngest built in 1964. Patrons will also be able to enjoy rides around the area on vintage ex-BCC buses. Static displays will include the Tower Wagon (a forerunner of the cherry-picker), the Scammel Tow Truck and the Trolley bus. Other vintage trucks will be displayed by the Heritage Truck Association. A sausage sizzle will be available thanks to the Ashgrove/The Gap Rotary Club and Christie will be there with her Rich Pour Coffee Wagon. Cold drinks and Ice Creams will also be on sale. Fares are $16 for adults, $12 for concessions, $8 for children and $46 for a family pass. Other attractions are being arranged.

Start planning now for significant car parking reduction at Ferny Grove An update from Ferny Grove & Upper Kedron Residents Association (FGUK RA)

With construction of the TOD at Ferny Grove train station commencing soon, rail commuters should start planning for a reduction in carparking spaces between June 2021 to October 2022.

From the early planning stage, FGUK RA has regularly communicated with the TOD developer (Honeycombes) and worked together to facilitate several community information sessions. From our perspective, Honeycombes have been diligent in progressing the project while resolving most community feedback. However, FGUK RA Committee remains concerned that without urgent planning for increased public transport to/from the station and/or temporary parking options, there will be significant long-term inconvenience to commuters and those who live near the station until the TOD is complete. Some history for those not familiar: • There are currently 973 car parks at Ferny Grove station. • The TOD will occur in 3 stages - with available car spaces at each Stage fluctuating from 647 to 785 spaces – a deficit of between 326 to 188 spaces compared to now and until completion. • Upon completion in late 2022, there will be 1416 spaces. This includes extra carparks promised by the Federal Government, 350 parks for shoppers and 80 car parks for residents.

Hot Stone Massage Natural Facials Body Sugaring Handmade Plant-based Skincare

• During the planning stages, FGUK RA strongly supported

that Movilla Park be used as a temporary car park (200 car parks) with restoration of the Park at TOD completion to include a playground and small (<10) car park. • BCC refused temporary use of Movilla Park and currently there are no alternative overflow parking options during construction. • In hindsight, delays by BCC to approve the development application (12 months instead of the typical 4 to 6 months), meant that the opportunity to commence construction during COVID-19 lock down, when there were minimal commuters, was lost. FGUK RA remains adamant that improved public transport to/from the train station and approvals for temporary carpark options is urgently required to reduce inconvenience for residents and commuters. We will continue to speak with State and Local government representatives about these concerns. Rail commuters must begin to consider their best options while the TOD is constructed. For example, if possible why not work from home, car pool, use public transport to the station or the buses on Waterworks Road, park at another station or walk to station? Through this new column, we’ll keep you updated on other community issues we are working on: 4 Safer parking at the water park on Upper Kedron Road 4 General traffic connection between Upper Kedron and Mt Nebo Road 4 Improved off-street parking and curbing at Cemetery Road/Charolais street 4 Planning for future bus routes – in particular, Levitt Road and Minnie Street Formed in 2017, FGUK RA represents collective community feedback about issues impacting the livability and sustainability of Ferny Grove and Upper Kedron. In 2019, to reflect electoral boundary changes, coverage was extended to include Keperra. If you’d like to join the FGUK RA to strengthen community voice, or have feedback, please contact us at fguk.communications@gmail.com The Hills Echo delivers 14,500 copies per month of what matters to The Hills District and Surrounds. Golf Rounds Boom

These ladies are enjoying a great game of golf once again,

This time last year the Keperra Country Golf Club was holding daily meetings with its committee and leadership team to determine how it would remain open as COVID-19 began to take hold in Australia.

Over a period of three weeks, the club bounced between being open and shut, in line with the Queensland Government guidelines. Michael Dash, Keperra Golf Club’s Marketing, Membership & Partnership Manager, explains that management were doing everything within their power to keep the club open, along with keeping everyone safe. ‘We were learning new information hourly and trying to pivot as best as we could, to not only get our members a game, but allow our staff to simply come to work in order to mow the grass! Golf Courses are a funny thing; they can get out of control if not manicured regularly,’ said Mr Dash. Thankfully, this period of uncertainty was relatively short-lived and after a few cautious months, the game of golf experienced a resurgence - an extreme resurgence at that. The final tally of golf rounds for 2020 at Keperra Golf Club cumulated at a mammoth 90,000 rounds, even with COVID-19 being an ever present factor in the marketplace. Now membership that tops at 1300+ have all but closed. ‘Demand has been high and the golf course has been incredibly busy. Our Junior program, the Keperra Eagles grew too along with Ladies Lets Golf program, its fair to say Men aged 4564 are behind the majority of the spike in demand, and the increased chatter on our social media channels is testament to that,’ said Gavin Lawrence, General Manager. However, it wasn’t just members and social golfers visiting the club - corporate clients - new and existing- were at the club in the masses. ‘We welcomed a lot of new clients to Keperra Golf Club and had a difficult time managing our existing clients against our new ones. It was obvious the corporate world saw golf as a safe way to entertain clients. 2021’s calendar is already pretty much full. It’s a really great time for our club,’ stated Mr Lawrence. Nevertheless, a game of golf looks slightly different than it used to. Staff were busy last year re-educating members on the ‘do’s and don’t’s’ of what a ‘COVID Safe’ game of golf now looked like. It was a learning curve for many, but one which everyone got on board with very quickly. ‘At the end of the day, we (and the guests) all had the same objectives - enjoy a game of golf, do it while being Covid Safe, go home – pretty simply really,’ said Mr Dash. The club welcomes golfers of all skill levels, young and old. You can find this 27 hole championship course at 44 Duggan Street , Keperra.

Mortal Engines by Philip Reeve is a fantastic book! The book is set in the far future where the earth has been scarred from the countless wars past generations fought. Now, cities roam the bare earth preying on smaller towns for materials. The main character Tom Natsworthy lives on one of the biggest traction cities on the planet - London. Tom is flung out of London into the wastelands where a cyborg begins to hunt him down. The story of this young boy is incredible with twists and turns all throughout the book. The author Philip Reeve has a way with his words where every single word draws you in and you feel like you have to read more. The cover art for Mortal Engines also draws you in. I found every time I picked up the book, I had to look at the amazing art on the front cover! I recommend this book for ages 10 18 years old as it does have a bit of violence in it but not too much. This book was the best book I have read in my entire life, it had so much drama and suspense that I just couldn’t stop reading. After I finished reading Mortal Engines, I moved on to the second book Predators Gold and without noticing I read the entire book in four days thanks to the way Philip Reeve lures you into a spiral of mystery and suspense. I loved every bit of the book because it felt like I was Tom and I found myself lost in his world going on adventures with him. I felt sad when Tom felt sad and I felt happy when Tom felt happy, so it just shows how well the book Mortal Engines is written. Overall, I rate this book 10/10 It's a great read and I recommend getting lost in Tom’s world like I did. The Hills Echo, April 2021 - Page 17

Top 5 Disability Podcasts

Submitted by Susanne Jones, Just Better Care Brisbane North and CBD

The Podcasts offer easy access to programs that entertain, inform, and inspire. If you haven’t listened to one before I encourage you to give it a go as there’s a world of interesting content out there.

If you have a smartphone just use its built in Podcast app to get started, or Google ‘How to play Podcasts’ on your computer. Here are five disability-focused podcasts that might surprise… 1. CRUcial Conversations This limited-edition series features five stories of grassroots leadership by people in the disability sector in Queensland. These stories of change show us what it means to be a leader and what it takes to create real and meaningful change in the lives of people living with disability. These stories are deeply personal, compelling and insightful. 2. One in Five Put together by The University of Melbourne’s Melbourne Disability Institute, One in Five explores some of the most complex issues facing the 20% of Australians who live with disability. Launched in December 2019, the podcast gives voice to people with disability and asks about their experiences with everything from employment, housing and the law to supporting families and early intervention. Guests, including those living with disability, researchers and people working in the sector, tackle hot-button topics. These range from informed decision making and ethics in the context of mental health legislation to investigating what is best practice early intervention.

3. Disability Done Different Put out by Melbourne-based group Disability Services Consulting, Disability Done Different aims to have the kind of conversations that come about when passionate people aren’t afraid to speak their mind. Featuring hosts Roland and Evie Naufal, this podcast offers unique insights with interesting guests who have carved their own path in the disability sector – revealing battle scars, imparting wisdom and talking straight about their journeys. 4. Abnormally Funny People This hilarious podcast features a group of stand-up comedians of all abilities light heartedly ‘reviewing’ disability products. Hosted in the UK by Simon Minty and Steve Best, along with a rotating cast of guests, all are genuinely funny. As well as introducing entertaining reviews of products, services, technology, travel and more; the podcast’s impressive line-up of guest comedians also provide their take on their lives, society and the response to disability through the lens of comedy. 5. We’ve Got This: Parenting with a Disability Packed with fascinating stories, this podcast aims to share stories which provide an accurate representation of family life and the complexities that parenting with disability brings. The idea for a podcast of this nature came about when producer Eliza Hull, who has a neurological condition called Charcot Marie Tooth, was pregnant with her daughter and felt unrepresented in every one of the countless parenting books. The series explores the issues that parenting with a disability brings, whilst also challenging the stigmas and stereotypes. Guests cover a range of issues including topics such as parenting with an intellectual disability, forced hysterectomies, acquiring a disability and parenting later in life.

current market conditions

What a difference 4 months can make! In the last edition of the Priority Report we reported that property prices had increased by an average rate of 4.1% in Hills District suburbs. A strong result given the COVID pandemic. As we enter Autumn, property prices have jumped steeply with some of our sellers achieving more than 10% increases in the value of their properties within 12 months. With limited properties avaiable for sale, we're seeing very large numbers at open homes and strong interest from interstate investors. While this can make it challenging for those looking to buy in this market, it can be a significant windfall for those looking to sell but then invest or purchase in other markets.

A piping hot sales market and increased demand for rental properties in the Hills District has seen a number of first-time landlords join our rental portfolio. Our landlords enjoy an online portal to monitor the management of their property with ease and are supported by our experienced property management team (pictured below).

If you are looking to switch property management providers or are new to property investment, we are currently offering new landlords 6 months FREE management fees. When you partner this with our standard 3month money-back guarantee for routine inspections, it is a great time to make the switch to the property management team that cares about you and your property. To take advantage of this special offer, call Allanah today on 07 3164 7000.

News from The Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club,

Again this year many Gem Shows held by various Gem Clubs around the Brisbane area have been cancelled due to COVID-19 and associated regulations.

However, there is a Gem show in the coming weeks at the Kingaroy Showgrounds on 10th and 11th of April. For further information call 0491 606 427. Members of the club recently held a display at the Arana Hills Library which was well received. The Library staff have invited the club to hold a display again next year due to the strong interest from the public. There were a variety of Gems and minerals on display in three of the Library’s cabinets. Young people were fascinated by the fossils on display whilst the older people were more interested in the cut and polished stones. There are many aspects relating to the hobby. You can specialise in one area or try and spread your interest across many fields. Some of the areas are; fossicking, collecting minerals and fossils, polishing and cabbing gemstone material, faceting of precious stones, micro-mounting, (which is collecting and displaying of small mineral specimens etc.), silverwork and setting your own stones or just collecting gemstone specimens. The Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club has its clubrooms located at 46 Ferneydell Street, Ashgrove and is open every Thursday from 9am to noon for cutting and polishing rocks and from noon to 3pm for silverwork. It is also open on Saturday from 1pm to 4pm. The club caters for Gemstone enthusiasts in the North Western area of Brisbane. If you feel this type of hobby interests you, do not hesitate to get in touch with either John (3351 1038) or Lloyd (3351 2093) who will be only too happy to have a chat to you about the workings of the club. Mt Maria College embraces the 90’s with ‘The Wedding Singer’

Mt Maria College was transported back to the 90’s in March as students performed the smash-hit Broadway musical ‘The Wedding Singer’ to the local community over two sold-out performances.

‘The Wedding Singer’ musical is based on the 90s film of the same name and follows Robbie, who sings at weddings, his failed relationship with his former fiancée, and his romance with a new love, Julia. Rehearsals for ‘The Wedding Singer’ began way back in 2019, with original plans to stage the production in 2020 brought to a halt by the Covid-19 pandemic. The musical’s Executive Producer and College Cultural Leader, Mrs Yvonne Carr, said that the production’s success is a testament to the amazing students and staff involved. ‘Our cast and crew have worked so hard and long to make this happen, who would have imagined that a Musical chosen and auditioned in Term 3 2019 would be showing in March 2021,’ Mrs Carr said.

A huge congratulations to all involved in ‘The Wedding Singer’. It will certainly go down as a musical to remember in the College history books. For more information about Mt Maria College, visit their open day on Wednesday 12th May.

Learn about the Good Men of Padua College

Padua College is the only school in Australia under the care of the Order of Friars Minor. Inspired by the teachings of St Francis, the Franciscan Friars established Padua College as a school to cater for boys from Year 5 to Year 12. Over sixty years on, the College has grown to 1,400 students and while there have clearly been some educational changes over this time, we still hold our Franciscan heritage very close to our heart. The College offers a holistic education including an engaging religious formation and pastoral care program, an inclusive and comprehensive curriculum, many co-curricular opportunities and a developmental outdoor education program.

We inspire and engage our learning community by being leaders in boys’ education through a learning culture underpinned by self-efficacy and excellence. We deliver dynamic, innovative pedagogy in the three phases of learning from Year 5 through to Year 12. Here at Padua we embrace change, but we also recognise the need to hold true to things that we hold as important pillars for a good education. We introduce our students to a wide range of belief systems and multi-faith disciplines, we encourage debate and discussion, and then introduce our students to a Catholic and Franciscan world view. This vision is permeated by our values of Joy, Courtesy, Humility, Simplicity and Peace. What Parents Should Expect from an Early Childhood Service

While the lure of brand-new builds, state-of-the-art facilities, and every bell-and-whistle is real, what truly distinguishes a quality early childhood service from the next? What should first-time parents be looking for when making an informed decision about the care of their child?

There is no ‘one size fits all’ approach to early education. Services must be responsive to the changing needs of children, their families, and the local community. Families must always feel welcome, valued, and understood. Central to the quality of a service is its educators. Early childhood teachers and educators play an important role in helping young children feel safe and supported and in creating environments where their learning and development can flourish. When choosing a service families should consider, what qualification level do the educators and service leaders hold, how many years experience do they have and how long has the educator worked with the service? The success of any early childhood program relies on the professionalism and expertise of a supportive and experienced leadership team who understand the key drivers of quality care and education. Does the management and leadership team support educators? Are leaders present and overseeing programs? How long has organisation behind the centre been operating children’s services? The environment is usually the first impression, and children and families should expect to see a safe and nurturing setting that is both stimulating and developmentally challenging. The environment should be clean, well maintained and arranged in an aesthetic way that invites and provokes learning.

Page 26 - April 2021, The Hills Echo

The connection between educators and a well-designed environment is the foundation for a successful curriculum,. You may want to ask are educators engaging with children? Are the children actively involved in play? Families should become familiar with the service’s philosophy – it is a true representation of what early childhood means to their unique service. It is a representation of their staff, their values, and their priorities. Since 2009, Habitat Early Learning has delivered high quality early education programs to children from birth to school age. We encourage you to visit our services at 54 Hogarth Road, Ferny Grove to find out more about how our highly qualified and long serving team can support your child’s education through our unique education, nutrition, and health model. Gardening

Plantings and preparations for Autumn

From The Hills Organic Garden C ommunity The weather is gradually starting to cool down, which is very exciting as the HOG Community can now set to work preparing the gardens for their Autumn/Winter plantings. These plantings will result in their terrific Winter/Spring crops. As preparation, the beds usually need topping up with more soil to which fertilizer and compost is added. The beds are then left to rest for a couple of weeks to allow all the nutrients to mix into the soil. It is best to start planting before the weather gets too cold, so that the soil is still a little warm to encourage the establishment of root growth. In the herb garden, members will start planting fennel, oregano, thyme, rosemary, as well as parsley, marjoram and coriander. The vegetable planting will consist of broccoli, spinach, radish, snow peas, silver beet, cauliflower, cabbages, zucchinis, eggplant and tomatoes. As it is not recommended to plant the same crop in the same bed as the previous season, the HOG always ensures that crop rotation is carried out. Vegetable seedlings/seeds are usually planted about the beginning of April before the weather gets too cold. The members of HOG are very proud of their Community Garden and strive to keep it looking tidy and an inviting place to come and work, as well as to welcome visitors.

Native Plants & our Pioneers

From the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club On Thursday, 6th May, the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club will meet at the Enoggera Memorial Hall if there are no restrictions in place. The guest speaker, Geoff Robinson, will talk about the historical connection between native plants and our pioneers. For instance, Australia's national flower, the Golden Wattle, belongs to the acacia family - Acacia pycnantha. The early settlers used this plant to wattle and daub their houses, so this acacia became known as the Golden Wattle. The meeting commences after morning tea which is served at 9.45 a.m. Visitors and new members are most welcome. Access to the hall is via Trundle Street, Enoggera and it is close to public transport and is wheelchair friendly. A trade table operates at the meeting so members can bring excess plant material for others to buy for a very low price. The guest speaker will bring honey and plants for sale. April is a busy month for gardeners. It's the time for spring annual seedlings and bulbs to be planted. Everything should be done by the end of April while there is still warmth to encourage growth. To make the annuals grow in a bushy shape and not tall and lanky, pinch out the growing tip once the plant is established. Don't plant bulbs too deep. The neck of the bulb should be level with the top of the soil. Sweet pea seeds used to be planted on St Patrick's Day in March which, these days, is still hot weather. It's better to plant sweet peas in April. The club meets on the first Thursday of the calendar month and has vacancies for more members. For more information please phone the president, Pat, on 3356 1256 Page 28 - April 2021, The Hills Echo

Some members also attend the garden through the week to water and do general maintenance. The garden can be found at 416 Bunya Road, Bunya next to the Off Leash Dog Park. Counsellor’s Column with Robin Botic

“A Relationship Catch 22”

Often the communication skills and self-affirmative behaviours that we able to exhibit after we have left a relationship are the very ones we needed to have practiced while we were still in the relationship for the relationship to have had a more successful outcome. This, as I see it, is just one of a number of ‘Relationship Catch 22’s’. Let’s take a situation where one partner (Stella) is critical or angers easily, while the other (Bob) fears confrontation and will go for peace at any price. There are three possible outcomes here. 1. Nothing much changes in the outward behaviours, but internally there is a deadening of positive feeling and an increase of negative ones, as well as distancing by one or both of the partners. 2. The dissatisfaction is brought out in the open and both partners work towards self-change which reflects back into the relationship positively. Love and connection increase. 3. The third outcome is of separation caused by either Stella leaving because she is bored; there’s no change through challenge to either partners’ negative behaviour patterns which Stella will invariably take into the next relationship: ‘Why change if you don’t need to.’ The alternative scenario and the ‘Catch 22’ I referred to is when Bob reaches a point where he can no longer sustain the internal pressure he has created with his ‘peace at any price policy’. He breaks out rather than breaking down. In finally

standing up for himself, he changes the status quo. Stella’s fear that Bob really is upset produces some changes in Stellas’ behaviours but not enough. In continuing to hold his space, Bob not only continues to challenge Stella, but also himself. This is often a lengthy and uncomfortable process. The deal breaker for Bob comes when he realises that now even though he has the courage to speak his mind and request change, change is only a fluctuating gesture on Stella’s part. This process is truly exhausting. It is at this point that Bob leaves the relationship. His feelings of freedom, relief and confidence that he now experiences in his single state he attributes to not having to deal with Stella. Having the strength to speak honestly, express our needs, to define our boundaries and listen to each other, only comes from having the courage to do it. A poor sense of self is very much more at the effect of anothers’ approval rating. We won’t speak up for fear of loss of some sort and we end up losing ourselves and the relationship. We often blame our ex-partner for not being able to feel or behave as we can now. This may in part be true, but our sense of a stronger self has more to do with the courage and strength it takes to face the challenge and the fear that something is not working no matter what you do or say differently. Knowing when it is time to leave and not run, births a resilience and self-knowledge that is not won any other way. Paradoxically, Stella doesn’t really ‘get’ what’s required of her until it is too late. Bob has left and only then does the recognition of that loss bring out a sincere will to change. And often Stellas do, do it. Pain is our biggest teacher, but we are often slow learners. Sometimes when partners like Bob see that a Stella’s change is real and long term, a relationship, that appeared doomed is with great courage reborn with changed behaviours.

On the 8th of March, we celebrated International Women’s Day and I wanted to acknowledge some of the amazing women in my electorate. Throughout the week I interviewed Mary-Ann Strelow, Executive Director of Fleet Crew; Imogen Waters, the Youth Parliamentarian for Everton last year; Chi, a local resident whose got some remarkable achievements, Bec Peall who has got quite a record of accomplishments and Roz Fenson from The Nest. Thanks to all of the incredible and inspiring women in my community and across the globe! If you would like to watch these interviews, please visit my Facebook site. CLEAN UP AUSTRALIA DAY

Thanks to everyone who joined me for Clean Up Australia Day at Teralba Park. Despite heavy rain clouds, we had a good turn out and even managed to find a vintage washing machine near the creek! Thanks to Subway at Everton Park for providing us with a delicious bacon and egg roll to finish.

E AT O N S C R O S S I N G R D & L I L L E Y R D INTERSECTION

This intersection is dangerous and a major concern for motorists who use it regularly. Over the last several years, I've made numerous representations to the Minister for Transport and Main Roads to address these road safety issues. Finally, in October 2020, I was advised funding had been allocated and geotechnical investigations will now commence. The proposed works on this upgrade includes: • Major traffic signal upgrade of Eatons Crossing Rd and Lilley Rd intersection • Upgrades to several intersections with various turn treatments to improve safety • Widening Strathpine-Samford Rd to accommodate widecentreline treatment • Safety barriers For more information visit: https://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/ projects/strathpine-samford-road-route-safety-project

Dickson News

from your Federal Member for Dickson PETER DUTTON

A Message from Peter We can approach Easter and the school holidays this year with more certainty and positivity than twelve months ago. Our economy is recovering and the vaccine roll-out is underway, unemployment in February dropped from 6.3% nationwide down to 5.8% and 88,000 fulltime jobs were created. This is a stark contrast to just twelve months ago when businesses were closing, Easter holiday plans and ANZAC Day marches cancelled, and we were in the middle of a hard lockdown. But there is still much work to be done. Some sectors of the economy are struggling, and we are still in the middle of a pandemic and recession. The Morrison Government is focussed on keeping Australians safe and creating the jobs we need. Locally, I am working with the community to deliver the road, transport and facility upgrades we need. Please let me know what you would like me to work on in your local area. Volunteer grants I am pleased to advise Expressions of Interest for the 2021 Volunteer Grants program have now opened. These grants can be used to buy small equipment for volunteers or for the reimbursement of volunteer fuel, transport, and training costs. Eligible not-for-profit community organisations can apply for funding between $1,000 and $5,000. As your local Federal Member, I value the vital role volunteers play here in the Dickson electorate. Volunteers help to build a stronger, better connected and more resilient local community.

The objective of Volunteer Grants are to help community organisations to: • Support the efforts of Australia’s volunteers • Support the inclusion of vulnerable people through volunteering • Encourage, support, and increase participation in volunteering. If you would like more information, or to request the Expression of Interest form for your organisation, please contact my office on 3205 9977. Stop Child Abuse - Trace an Object Recently, I was proud to launch, with the Australian Federal Police and the Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation (ACCCE), a new initiative - Trace an Object. The program calls on the public to help investigators identify household objects in the background of child sexual abuse material. I'm asking you to please take a look at the non-confrontational images on the ACCCE website, to see if you recognise any of the objects. You might have seen a similar hat in your neighbourhood, or know where a particular bedspread is sold. No clue is too small and you never know, perhaps your clue could lead to a child being rescued from sexual abuse and an offender brought to justice. The initiative has been run by Europol and incredibly, they have seen 10 children removed from harm, thanks to information from the public. Please have a look at accce.gov.au/trace to see if you can help and encourage your friends and family to do the same. Your support in our effort to protect children is greatly appreciated. Get in touch Please get in touch with me at peter.dutton.mp@aph.gov.au or 3205 9977 to let me know your priorities for our community. Or you can drop in to my next mobile office. I am coming up to 2500 visits in my mobile office and have helped thousands of residents with local issues. If you see me out and about with my caravan, please drop in. Alternatively, you can drop by my office in on Gympie Road in Strathpine during business hours. Or visit my website www. peterdutton.com.au for more information.

Keperra Picnic Ground Drainage Upgrade Keperra Picnic Ground, located on the corner of Samford and Upper Kedron Roads, Ferny Grove was converted to a local green space in 1982. Over this time, a variety of sporting fields and community facility buildings have been added to the site. As a result of this infrastructure, the area has experienced high surface water drainage flows. This drainage upgrade will assist by restoring the main parkland drainage network, improve surface water runoff, water pollution and erosion. This work will also improve site functionality, security and safety and the works will be undertaken in two stages. Stage 1 will commence in April 2021 and be completed by July 2021, weather and construction conditions permitted. For the duration of the work, the construction zones will be fenced off and closed to the public. The work areas will be closed for a further three months following construction completion to allow for the establishment of new turf. Cr Steve Toomey at the winning Signal Box for the Lord Mayor’s Artforce Award 2019-20 Artforce is a Brisbane City Council community art project that enables local artists to paint their original works on traffic signal boxes around Brisbane suburbs. Over 1,200 boxes have been painted across Brisbane, celebrating this project. Artforce was initiative in 1999, and this year we celebrate artwork painted on signal boxes in 2019-2020. The project provides residents of all ages and artistic backgrounds an opportunity to design and paint an artwork on a traffic signal box. This year I am very pleased and congratulate a local Ferny Grove resident and her two daughters who were awarded the Lord Mayor’s Award for their painting on the Energex signal box on Upper Kedron Road and Cemetery Road, Ferny Grove. Titled ‘The Burbs’ the artwork explores the issues of social isolation and how we preserve nature alongside urbanization, congratulations! Mitchie State High students are getting into coding as their new lab comes online and are enjoying the full functionality of the brand-new resource centre which opened to students last month. Last year the Palaszczuk Government began construction on the $12 million investment into the school, which will serve generations of students to come.
