Women Reminded To Take Time For Their Health As the second month of 2018 slips by, women need a reminder to look after their own health and having a breast screen is a great start.

Dr Jane Brazier, Director of BreastScreen Queensland Brisbane Northside Service, encourages women aged 50 to 74 years to make an appointment for their breast screen as most breast cancers are found in this age group. However, women in their forties and over 75 years are also eligible to have a free breast screen. A GP referral is not required. ‘Family comes first for most women, so finding time to look after their health can be quite hard. Making an appointment to have a free breast screen is a really good start for 2018 - it is easy to do and so important,’ Dr Brazier said. Dr Brazier said that being a woman and getting older are the two main risk factors for developing breast

cancer so every woman over the age of 40 should take note. ‘A breast screen is the most effective method of detecting breast cancer at a very early stage even before a lump can be felt. Finding breast cancer at an early stage gives a woman the best possible chance for successful treatment and wellbeing,’ Dr Brazier said. BreastScreen Queensland has a service at Keperra. Located in the North West Community Health Centre in Corrigan St, appointments will only take 15-20 minutes. Other Services are located at Chermside, Kippa-Ring, North Lakes, Indooroopilly and Brisbane City. Appointments can be made by phoning 13 20 50 or you can now book online at breastscreen.qld.gov.au.

How do I find the Right Yoga Class for me?

Yoga has become so popular now, with so many different styles and themes, from Beer or Drunk Yoga, Cat Yoga and even Harry Potter Yoga. We understand how confusing and daunting stepping into a Yoga Studio can be. With each class differentiating quite dramatically, how do you know which one is right for you? Here is a break down of the Classes you may see as well as the classes we offer here at Yoga Sol: Hatha Yoga: General Yoga may vary from Teacher to Teacher and even from week to week. Suitable for all abilities and ages. Vinyasa or Flow: A quicker paced class where each pose flows to the next often in a meditative relaxed way. Some Vinyasa classes may be advertised as Power Yoga which is almost Aerobic in style and pace. Lots of strong standing poses that build stamina, strength and heat in the body. Yin: Long slow and deep stretches most often performed on the floor with little or no standing poses. Great for improving flexibility. Yoga Load: Yoga with Weights. Using Therabands and hand held weights to add resistance to our poses for Strengthening and Toning the body. Restorative: A supported practice with plenty of large cushions Bolsters and Blankets to make you super Comfortable and Relaxed. Lyengar: Technical and precise. With focus on

alignment. Great for beginners, those with limitations or those that really want to improve posture. Ashtanga: A set of poses that don’t change or differ. Quite challenging both for stamina and ability. Candlelight: A restorative style class of pure indulgence set in a circle of candles with guided visualization and Relaxation techniques. May include Head massage, Foot massage and Hot towel Therapy. Meditation: No exercise or movement component. Pranayama: Breathing Techniques. Don’t Let The Flu Sneak Up On You!

Influenza, or ‘the flu’, is a highly contagious virus spread by infected people through coughing, sneezing or by touching surfaces contaminated by these secretions. The influenza virus comes in many forms and is continually mutating, making it extremely easy to become infected. Unlike the common cold, influenza can leave its sufferers with aching muscles and joints, fevers and chills in addition to a cough and headaches. Children may also experience diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting. It can leave you feeling extremely lethargic and unable to get out of bed. Those who have suffered from influenza have described the symptoms akin to being hit by a truck. While it is very easy to catch the flu, it is just as easy to protect yourself and others by following some of these flu smart tips! Wash your hands regularly, particularly after sneezing and coughing. This will limit the flu

virus from spreading. Using an alcohol based hand sanitiser is convenient when hand washing facilities are unavailable. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue. This can prevent the spread of the virus into the environment for others to catch. Throw out the tissue immediately to avoid transmitting the virus to anyone else. Do not return to work early. You may still be contagious and able to transmit the virus to others in your work place. Get a yearly flu vaccination! This can be as easy as making an appointment at your local pharmacy or doctor’s clinic. The vaccines are updated yearly in accordance with viral strains predicted to be in circulation throughout the current flu season. The friendly pharmacists at the Ferny Hills and Patricks Road pharmacy are fully qualified pharmacist vaccinators. Appointments will be available from early April 2018. Contact 3351 5300 for further information.

Meet Your Pharmacist

Jacqui Hagidimitriou is TerryWhite Chemmart Samford’s resident Natural Medicines Pharmacist. With 12 years in the industry she has the experience along with a unique skill set that sets the pharmacy apart. We had the opportunity to catch up with Jacqu to find out a bit more about her and where her passion for the effective use of nutrition and natural medicine stems from. Read on to discover more…. What is a Natural Medicines Pharmacist? The Natural Medicines Pharmacist title was developed for myself as it was the best way to describe my role in the pharmacy. I provide a unique blend of traditional pharmacy services alongside an integration of nutritional and complementary medicines for customers that desire a holistic service. What benefits can you bring as a Natural Medicines Pharmacist to our local residents? As a registered pharmacist with additional training in natural medicines, I can assist customers with conventional drug therapy alongside the safe and appropriate use of natural therapies to enhance their wellbeing. I discuss the benefits of medication and nutritional based therapies for each individual to guide them in a safe and non-judgemental environment and can liaise with their GP if necessary. Did you always want to become a Pharmacist? Whilst at school I excelled at Chemistry, however upon finishing High School I had no idea what I wanted to do. I found out more about becoming a community pharmacist and the customer interaction really appealed to me, so I enrolled in a Bachelor of Pharmacy which is four years duration with one year of internship. I also have a very creative side and I find that assessing a person as a whole, with their lifestyle preferences like I do with my natural medicine consultations, enables me to provide creative solutions. What are the highlights of working in Samford? I love the community spirit that is in Samford. We have regular customers that we look forward to seeing and discovering how their health is progressing. It’s fantastic to be able to go on a journey with them to aid them in better all round health.

Jacqui Hagidimitriou Natural Medicines Pharmacist.

How do you keep up to date with developments within the industry? There are a multitude of Pharmacy conferences that are on offer which I attend, as well as natural medicine symposiums. Participating in these are a great way to meet likeminded pharmacists and exchange tips and information about our industry. We also have an annual conference on the Gold Coast each year, whilst it’s great fun, it’s also a great way to discover more about what’s happening at the different pharmacies. Can customers book in for a consultation? Yes, of course, they can call the pharmacy or visit our clinic website. We hold private Natural health consultations, which can help with skin health, digestive health, menopause, weight management plus more. What is in store for TerryWhite Chemmart Samford? We have recently launched a state of the art health hub ‘The Clinic Hub’ which is redefining how people view their local pharmacy. The Clinic Hub will offer exclusive health services, parenting programs and numerous visiting Allied Health Professionals. TerryWhite Chemmart Samford is an award winning wellbeing pharmacy that provides a high level of customer service and professional advice. Patients and staff at Pine Rivers Private Hospital, Walk Towards Wellness

As part of its comprehensive inpatient program, staff at Pine Rivers Private Hospital encourage their patients to join them on a daily ‚walk towards wellness‘ in an effort to ‚practice what they preach and elevate feelings of wellbeing. The ‘Walk Towards Wellness‘ will take on a new route from March and is designed for patients to start their day in the outdoors and enjoy the tremendous benefits of exercise in a safe and trusted environment. Julie Ford, Nurse Unit Manager from Pine Rivers Private Hospital says the daily guided walks are extremely popular amongst patients and staff, and while it can seem like a simple activity - the walks boast tremendous patient outcomes. “The morning Walk Towards Wellness has become a staple activity at the hospital and in addition to boosting moods it assists patients cultivate consistency of daily movement,” she said.

“A 30 minute walk enhances metabolism, improves mental and physical energy, develops strong self discipline, improves sleep and assists in improving clarity of mind.

“We encourage patients to join us daily or a few times per week, as typically the more a person engages in an activity, the more likely they will begin incorporating it into their everyday life - and therefore experience long-term benefits.

“Our staff are renowned for their clinical experience, but also for showing patients genuine compassion and understanding. They enjoy the walks as it allows them to practice what they preach and also lead by example.”

COUNSELLOR’S COLUMN with Robin Botic

Dear Robin, We are having ex-wife troubles and I want to know how to deal with it. Normally our co-parenting relationship is pretty good, but every so often John’s ex-partner comes up with new schemes she wants to implement with regard to their son’s activity or schooling. She wants us to go along unilaterally with her ideas no matter how much it impacts on our lives. She is not nice when we don’t agree. John’s son, whom I dearly love, and do a lot for very willingly, has a mild physical condition (low muscle tone) which is affecting his school performance and energy levels. His ex-wife (Joan) came up with the bright idea that martial arts classes would be good for him, and wanted us to follow through in taking him to classes when it is our week to have him. John tacitly agreed with her without first consulting me. This scenario has caused arguments between us in the past. I feel he should consult me before he says anything to her. I have been willing to fill in in the past, but we now have a nine-month-old daughter, and I have just established her sleep routine around picking up John’s son from school, as I do each day of our week. The extra time required to fit in these two martial arts classes each week, after school, will totally disrupt our daughter’s sleep routine. I’m not willing to do this, and when I return to work, it would be impossible anyway. It is also ridiculously difficult for my husband to attend to this. It is very easy for his wife to do, as her time is flexible and this does not disrupt her life in any great way. John says he wants a harmonious relationship with Joan for his son’s sake. I know and respect this and appreciate that he wants to do his best, but I also feel he is not standing up to Joan enough, or really considering our daughter, myself, and the effects her demands have on our relationship. I do want to support his son and be fair about it, but I don’t feel this is the way. Any suggestions? Chrissy. Dear Chrissy, First and foremost you have to form a united front with regard to Joan’s demands. You have enough to deal with in a relationship without disruption

coming unnecessarily from exes. Obviously Joan has forgotten what it is like to have a new baby for the first time, and how your consciousness revolves entirely around their needs. Your husband, as you are, are caught between the competing needs of both children. He is not disregarding your daughter’s needs, but he also feels as protectively and needfully about both his son and daughter, as you do about your daughter. Try to feel how that feels for him. You’re both the meat in the sandwich while you allow Joan’s demands to cause friction between you. She cannot expect that you have to follow through in your home, in your time, with John’s son, what she chooses to do. That is your decision. In forming a united front in regard to these types of demands, I suggest your husband first meets her requests with expressions of willingness to look at what she is asking for, but also with the acknowledgment that he will not be able to make any decision until he has first consulted you and that you both have been able to work out a) whether you want to do it; b) whether you can do it; and c) if there is not another solution that you both can come up with that is a more practical solution that will meet the same end. I would also get your husband to detail exactly how this request impacts on your lives. Your daughter’s routine is a priority at this stage, and the family’s less essential activities need to be more flexible around her at this early stage of her life. Look at times when you could fit in extra-curricular activities when your husband is home from work or Saturday mornings. Martial arts may be useful for discipline and concentration, but it is not necessarily the best solution for his condition. Look at specialist physiotherapy exercise classes that really hone in on the problem. Your money will be spent more effectively in this direction. It is difficult trying to facilitate activities and meet the needs of two very different life stages in children. Usually children are more closely spaced together, and their respective needs more similar and therefore more easily dealt with. This will ease as your daughter is older but at this stage Joan hopefully is going to be more flexible about what your needs are. She can of course do what she chooses in her time for their son. But your choice must be about what best works for your family and your relationship. Robin
