Dear Editor, My family and I live in an estate in Ferny Hills and every year we embrace the Halloween spirit, decorate our house and hand out candy to the kids that live in our street. Unfortunately, people from outside our estate are now turning up at our house as early as 4pm expecting treats. There’s not a lot of Halloween atmosphere at that time so clearly the real purpose for the early starters is the lollies rather than the community experience! The treats we set out are intended for the neighbourhood kids and not for those who treat Halloween as some mad ‘candy dash’ from suburb to suburb. By 6.10pm our street had been cleaned out when it was planned to start at 6pm! My own kids went to our neighbour’s houses to be told ‘sorry, everything is gone!’ I am curious if those visiting our street have left offerings out the front of their own houses for their neighbourhood kids? My wife stood out the front of our house greeting everyone with ‘Happy Halloween!’ You would be disgusted how many people just took the candy and could nor even bother with a ‘thankyou’! What was once a really nice neighbourhood thing where locals would talk and get to know each other has now turned into a disappointing, disrespectful, dash for candy! It is highly unlikely that we will be participating next year. Regards, Kym

Team Keperra - ready to take on the challenge!

On the 13th December, a real test of endurance will be taking place at the Keperra Country Golf Club, and it’s all for a terrific cause - to raise funds for the Cancer Council.

Dubbed the Cancer Council’s Longest Day, this ultimate golf challenge will see members complete four rounds of golf in one day. That's 72 holes in total! Needless to say, this is a serious test of skill, strength, and stamina, however as a team member and marketing manager of Keperra Country Golf Club Michael Dash states, it is a for a great cause. ‘It’s going to be a serious test of endurance which I’m slightly nervous about, however all for a good cause. Trivia tomfoolery raises record funds!

Thanks to the amazing Hills community, the Ferny Hills State School Parents and Citizens’ Association has raised more than $8300 for the school from its trivia night and raffles!

Held on Saturday 23rd October, this was a party – sorry, we mean fundraiser – for professionals! Wowzers, did people put in an effort! Themed Disney, Pixar and Marvel, people came dressed as everything from Snow White to Buzz Lightyear to Alice in Wonderland to pirates and more! In a truly impressive display, everyone went ‘all out’ with costumes and table decorations. Even more impressive was the more than $8300 raised for the school through pre-sold raffle tickets, auctions and games on the night - what an effort! This money will go towards the upgrades of kids’ playgrounds, starting with a new nature playground and upgraded prep playgrounds in 2022, before moving on to other playgrounds at the school. The P&C is also funding other necessary items for the school, like home readers and literacy, ICT and STEM programs. The P&C isn’t just about fundraising: it’s about building a school community. They would like to thank their amazing local business sponsors who contributed prizes to raise funds, and all of those who got into the spirit and contributed to a great fun night and demonstrated a tremendous community spirit. BRAVO! If you’re a past attendee of Ferny Hills State School or your children attended and you would like to make a donation to their special school with a thriving community, please email executive@fhsspandc.online

A Little Christmas Angel in our Community

Meeting our community’s increasing needs, Share the Dignity powers full steam ahead toward fulfilling their goal of spreading love this Christmas. #ItsInTheBag, the initiative’s annual Christmas time appeal, encourages locals to donate a bag of goodies at the closest Bunnings store between Friday 19 November and Sunday 28 November 2021. The aim—to ensure woman and young girls spending this special holiday in domestic violence shelters receive life’s bare necessities. This may include toiletry needs, deodorant, toothbrushes and toothpaste, bathing items, as well as little luxuries like handwritten notes and knick-knacks. For many women and girls in tough situations, this is the only gift they will receive this Christmas. Madelyn (8-years-old from Ferny Hills) and her mother Amy-Louise are ‘Shero's’ for Share The Dignity. They have collected and sorted well over 200 bags and 100’s of individual sanitary packets in the last three years, and have been building their stash at home to donate and can quite easily bury Madelyn completely at this stage! After Madelyn’s father’s job became redundant whilst her mother was on maternity leave, Madelyn’s family struggled, both mentally and financially. Until their mindset was forever changed by the kindness of a stranger. As described by Madelyn’s mother, ‘We started collecting after we were able to get a food parcel from Nexus on Flockton Street. A volunteer chased me to my car and handed me an old handbag. I was shocked, but would never want to appear rude and accepted it, thinking it was empty and a gift because I must have looked that miserable with a newborn and little girl lined up at a food bank. I didn't look at it until I got home, and to my surprise it was filled with the most beautiful things, for me. Little things you just go without when you're struggling. I

Madelyn at the Share the Dignity donation box at Brookside Shopping Centre always made sure the kids had what they needed and then my husband but never myself. It was just so incredible another lady had done that for a total stranger. It was like she had totally understood what I had needed in that moment.’ It is always important to give back when we can. As Madelyn’s mum says, when you have more than you need, build a longer table—not a higher fence. That was the mindset Madelyn’s family adopted that day, and that is the mindset she is growing up to practice herself. Madelyn loves being a part of it all. She writes in the cards we put in each bag and chooses special items to gift. She is also a very handy size to climb in the big boxes at Bunnings to pass bags out! Furthermore, Madelyn, has gone onto raise over $20,000 for different charities in the last couple of years with no plans on stopping!

More than just 1.5 Million Meals

On 27 October, 2021 Mitchelton Meals on Wheels delivered its 1.5 millionth meal since its inception on 15 May, 1972.

For this historic delivery, well known ABC 612 morning radio announcer, Craig Zonca delivered the meal to Mr and Mrs Wacker on run nine in a 1972 HQ Holden Kingswood kindly provided by Robin, a member of the Brisbane Northside Classic Holden Car Club. Since its humble beginnings in a shop and annex in Wakefield Street, Alderley, from where 10 meals were delivered that first day, we have grown into a service that can proudly advertise having thus far supplied 1.5 million meals to aged and disabled local residents. This enables them to remain in their own homes longer. The Health Department justified that 3% of the local population in 1972 would qualify for a meal service. The meal cost was 40c with a Government subsidy of 10c. The first meal was delivered to Mr and Mrs Laffan by volunteers Mrs Pat Volk and Mrs A. Turner-James. Within two months the service had doubled its clients to 20. By the end of the year the target of 40 meals/day was reached. The service continued to grow but almost a decade later the meal number dropped temporarily from 90-100 to 70-80 meal/day due to a reduction in our boundary as new services opened at both Grange and Herston, and Ashgrove took over the Normanby area. With requests for meals from the aged in Alderley, Enoggera, Everton Park, Mitchelton, Everton Hills and Ferny Grove, our client base was soon up to 100. By June 1988, with the number of clients still growing, the kitchen had to close its books for the time bring. With 130 clients, a waiting list was opened. In September 1989 the addition of an 8th run was considered.

By our 30th year of operation in 2002, our 125 volunteers had delivered 34 190 meals to 170 clients. Up till mid 2004 Meals on Wheels remained a service provider to only those with a medical reference. Our service reached a peak in 2004 having delivered 45,325 meals by 140 volunteers to 215 clients. We reached an auspicious target of one ABC 612 radio announcer, Craig million meals in July Zonca delivering the 1.5millionth meal to Mr & Mrs Wacker 2007 when Mr & Mrs Zunker had their meal delivered by the Governor, Quentin Bryce who had been the patron of Queensland Meals on Wheels since November, 2003. In 2011, as a tribute and testament to the organization that Mitchelton Meals on Wheels had become, we received our 8th Quest Newspaper Business Achiever Award for Community & Non-For-Profit organizations . We were therefore inducted into the Gold Hall of Fame making us no longer eligible to apply as we had reached the highest achievement level possible. Meals on Wheels is now available to anyone on a long or short term basis. There is no need for a medical referral and there is no wait list. We average over 30,500 meal/year and have established a very good reputation in the local community we serve as we provide our clients with ‘More than just a Meal’.

Find Out How To Facet Curtain Call for 2021 An update from the Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club

Following the successful application for a Grant from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund, the Club has been able to purchase a Hall’s Faceting Machine.

This will take the number of faceting machines we have now to three. Besides an expensive item to purchase, they require detailed tuition by an accomplished operator. The Club has a dedicated person who will teach any member how to facet a stone in a one on one situation. There is an additional fee for this dedicated tuition. New users generally start with a less expensive material such as Quartz or Golden Labradorite, so if a mistake happens along the process the loss is not expensive. Along with a Faceting Machine, the user needs Laps to hold diamond grit - Dop sticks to hold the stone while cutting - Diamond spray or powder of varying sizes for grinding/ shaping the stone and polish, either (Diamond or Tin Oxide.) After the member has become accomplished, they generally move to more valuable materials which they might have found themselves, such as Sapphire, Zircon or Topaz. Generally, new members start off learning how to cut Cabochons from semi-precious material. After they are proficient at Cabochon cutting, they may move on to the Faceting side of the Club’s activities. The Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club has its clubrooms located at 46 Ferneydell Street, Ashgrove and is open every Thursday from 9am to noon for cutting and polishing rocks and from 12 noon to 3pm for silverwork. It is also open on Saturday from 1pm to 4pm. Visitors and new members are most welcome. If you would like more information about our club, please phone John on 3351 1038 or Lloyd on 3351 2093.

An update from The Hills Players

2021 is nearly over, and the question of the season prevails ‘Where did the year go?’

After the mayhem of 2020, The Hills Players were relieved to present our two plays of the year ‘Always a Bridesmaid’ by Jesse Jones, Nicholas Hope and Jamie Wooten and ‘The Witch in 204’, by Barbara Pease Weber, By Arrangement with ORIGINTM Theatrical, On Behalf of Samuel French, A Concord Theatricals Company. The Hill Players performance of ‘The Witch in 204’ in November was a great success and the perfect way to round off the year. I think our wonderful responsive audiences loved the play as much as the cast loved performing it. Audience laughter is fuel for a performer and there was plenty of it to keep the cast hyped each night of this wickedly witty play. A big thank you to those who contributed to making the show one of our best. Front of House Helen, Leesa, Faye and Shelley, our Stage Manager Mike, and a special thanks to our first time Prompt Raynah, who had quite the challenge at times - but did an amazing job and of course our tech team of Trevor and Alan. Thanks also to Tim Mander the State Member for Everton for the donation of our premium raffle prize. But our biggest thanks goes to our patrons, who come along to our shows, it means the world to us, without your continued support, we couldn’t do what we do. We are looking forward to another great year of performances in 2022. Now for which play to perform? Watch this space to find out... Till next year, warmest wishes for a safe and Merry Christmas from all the Hill Players.

Seranata Singers Encore for Project Pink

Musical director, Lois Cutmore, wowed the crowd with a bright pink wig to acknowledge Breast Cancer Awareness month

The Serenata Singers community group has again provided some much-valued celebration in song for a group of residents at AVEO Newmarket on Sunday 17 October. The group, provide opportunities to perform short one hour concerts for community groups, particularly at Aged Care Facilities. With the elderly being particularly vulnerable, numbers were limited to 15 at AVEO, but even then, the Singers were able to hit the note with an appreciative audience. With a combination of well know pieces (Fiddler on the Roof and Scarborough Fair), a couple of solos by their braver members, and of course a community sing-a-long, the audience very quickly joined in and clapped along. In addition, as it was Breast Cancer Awareness Month, members wore pink ribbons while the musical director, Lois Cutmore, reminded the crowd with a bright pink wig (see photo). The group has more performances planned in the lead up to Christmas and they look forward to entertaining. Keep an eye out for them performing Christmas carols at Samford and The Gap Village. If you would like to join them, or you would like them to join you, please check out www.serenatasingers.org.au and get in touch. The Seranata Singers are always pleased to welcome new members.

Book Week Inspires Young Creatives

As part of Book Week celebrations at St William’s Catholic Primary School, the children were encouraged to write a short story with one winner selected from each age group.

Here at The Hills Echo, we are delighted to share these wonderful stories with our readers! Two of the winners, Eva W from Year 62 and Peggy M from Year 5 are showcased.

The Hooded Woman by Eva W, Year 6

It was a cold afternoon in a small Polish town. A woman draped in a hooded black robe skulked in the shadows, watching as the sun disappeared over the horizon. The woman turned her menacing gaze to two bearded men who were as wide as they were tall. They were dragging something across the pathway, something big and bulky. That same night, the town’s Police Squad had found a body hidden amongst some t-shirts in the clothes store. “It would be that hooded woman”, Chief Inspector Sora suggested. “She has been lurking about the neighbourhood for days”. “If that’s so”, Sora’s deputy began, “then she shall be arrested at once”. Three days had passed since the hooded woman’s arrest. The Police Squad were ready to conclude their case when a teenage girl burst into their meeting, screaming. Chief Sora ran over to her, supporting her trembling legs. With all the sudden commotion, the police barely noticed the girl rasp “My boyfriend has been killed”. Chief Sora marched down the corridor, her stiff uniform restricting her movement. The second door on the right was the hooded woman’s prison cell; Sora had to end this assassination once and for all. Although the woman couldn’t kill the second person in jail, it is most likely she had accomplices. The Chief swung open the door, handcuffed the murderer, and marched her to her office. Chief Inspector Sora and the hooded woman were seated in the Chief’s office, talking. “Go on” Sora urged the hooded woman harshly. “There were two men, with bushy beards and round bellies, who lived in the town over to the left. They were friends with my sister and I, but when we refused to become criminals alongside them, they turned to us with hatred. They chased us all the way to this town and…” The hooded woman paused. “The two men attacked me and my sister. I escaped, but she was killed. I watched them drag her body into my shop to make it look as though I killed her. I wear this robe so they won’t recognise me” she finished. To sum it all up, the hooded woman was let free, the teenager calmed down and the men were arrested. The Polish town is safe.

Reading is my Secret Power by Peggy M, Year 5

Calemb was a kenspeckle person. Not for his smarts, not for his looks, not even because his brother was in a wheelchair. The real problem was the fact that his dad was Superman, his mum was Wonder Woman, his brother could lift things with the power of his mind, his sister controlled water and he had nothing. Absolutely nothing. No super strength, he couldn’t fly. He had the fighting skills of a stapler and could definitely not control things with his mind. Calemb when to the Dou’e Enfants like any other superhero child would and he attended all basic classes, like any other superhero child would. He was not what you’d call cool. Dark black hair lay in a mop atop his head, and he was small with a dark tan and deep brown eyes. Dou’e Enfants was a school for children of superheroes. All students attended Fighting, Truth and Lies and a special class for your power. About the only class Calemb was good at was Truth and Lies. As he lay across his bed, he looked out his window and he watched shooting stars race across a sky of diamonds. Slowly, he dozed off. When he awoke that morning, he awoke to a boring day of school… at least that’s what he thought. Little did he know how different this day would be…. ‘You get your haircut with a lawnmower?!’ Nancy Brown shouted from the other side of the field. Calemb kept his head down. He knew her rude comments mattered to no one. He raced across to the library, and she followed. ‘Stop!’ he shouted, sounding annoyed. ‘What did you say?’ she said back, sounded offended. ‘Stop!’ he repeated ‘Stop or I’ll, I’ll…’ ‘What will do you, bore me out of here?’ She shoved him and then he stumbled. Right into a book on the library shelf. He couldn’t really describe how he felt. All of a sudden, the world he knew had disappeared and a great cold had overcome his body. When he finally opened his eyes, he was standing in the middle of a clearing being stared at by a small group of women holding spears, swords and shields. Then he released they weren’t staring at him, they were staring at her. She was beautiful. The wind blew in her dark black hair and her eyes were storm grey. To himself she kind of looked like his mother, Wonder Woman. Then was the moment he discovered his secret power. This history of the Amazons was the first book he entered but not the last. The Year that Was An update from Arana VIEW Club

Members attending the Seniors and Technology lunch at the Arana Leagues Club This year has certainly been a better one than 2020. We managed to have our meetings, some with reduced numbers and most with wearing masks but it didn’t impact on the fun and friendship that we enjoy. Our Cent Action at the November Meeting was a resounding success with approximately $900.00 being raised. This will assist with our donations to the Christmas Appeal and the Back-to-School Appeal in the new year. Our Guest speaker was Robyn Garard our Zone Councillor. It was lovely to watch the videos of previous students as they discussed the impact that the support from the Smith Family had on them and their families. The new year meetings will commence in February with our Annual General Meeting and we are always happy to have new members join the committee. The Committee would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and we look forward to seeing everyone back in 2022. For more information, contact Carol on 3355 5349

The Crazy Cake Season An update from the Brisbane North Decorators Club

The Brisbane North Cake Decorators are about to enter that crazy time of the year when Christmas Cakes keep us all busy.

Every year for over 30 years, we have made, iced and decorated Christmas Cupcakes for the Mitchelton Meals on Wheels clients. We will be putting a display in the Arana Hills Library in January, so drop in to have a look. It is sure to intrigue children as well as adults. Our meetings commence again in January on the 3rd Saturday and are held at the Arana Hills Community Centre on Patricks Road commencing at 1pm. We love to see new members come along and discover our craft. Check out our Facebook page by searching Brisbane North Cake Decorators Association QCDA for more information. Picabeen Reflects on the Year Gone By By QUT Student at Picabeen Community Centre

This is my second placement for my Master of Social Work at QUT. I’m blessed. This placement brings me to contribute to our community and society. Picabeen is one of the best community centres that I’ve ever heard of in Brisbane. The inclusiveness and richness of support given by the staff and volunteers in the organisation makes me feel supported. The project that I am working on is the Christmas event that’s held in our centre. The aim of this project is to provide an opportunity for disadvantaged and vulnerable people to access assistance during a time of year that is often filled with anxieties. In this year, our goal is to provide an avenue for clients of the centre to come together to celebrate a universally recognized event. We are also working on breaking down barriers to social participation and encouraging intergenerational participation. My project, I feel, also reduces social isolation, and promotes inclusion in our community. Where COVID-19 has impacted upon everyone's life, it has also contributed a lot of negative impacts to the community. By acknowledging the impact of the pandemic, we would like to support, help, and assist our local communities in improving their life and well-being. Their ideas have prompted us to let our community know that they are not alone, and Picabeen is here to support and help. The centre is holding their annual Christmas celebration on Tuesday 14th Tuesday December from 9.30am-1pm. All are welcome. Please note, the centre will be closing on Friday 24th December and will reopen on Wednesday 5th January. The Picabeen Change Room Op shop will also be closing Friday 24th at 12pm and reopening on Tuesday 4th January. We wish everyone in our community a safe festive season and we can’t wait to see you all in our centre in 2022.

Age Is No Barrier

History shows that as physical limitations and time constraints begin taking their toll, participation rates in competitive sports begin to decline. But a new approach to the way those aged 65+ participate in physical activity is offering seniors the chance to re-connect with sports. Operating under the blanket term of modified sports, which includes sports for those living with disability, the initiative works by offering a range of at a lower impact level. Tailored for different ability levels, modified sports are increasingly being seen by both participants and other stakeholders as a great way to keep older community members fit, healthy and engaged. Barriers to entry Australian physical activity guidelines for older adults recommend accumulating at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity each day. Typically, cardiac output, respiratory function, muscle mass, metabolic rate, nerve conduction rate, flexibility, and bone density decline with age. However, maintaining a physically active lifestyle, combined with dietary and supportive lifestyle practices, can help reduce the rate of decline. Dr Claire Jenkins is an expert when it comes to the benefits of sports participation. ‘There are many benefits that participants can derive from playing sport. These can include physical health, but also social and mental health. For example, reducing loneliness and making new friends. That’s why its important people find something they enjoy and participate when they can,’ she says.

Popularity will grow Claire says that in general most of the well-known modified sport opportunities for older adults tend to be walking sports. However, some organisations have looked at modifying sports in other ways, she says. ‘A couple of years ago, London Sport in the UK provided sitting netball for care home residents. I think more modifications like that, be it seated sporting opportunities or informal kickabouts, can enable people to be active,’ Claire says. She expects modified sport to continue to grow in popularity, as opportunities become more geographically available. Claire says there is no “best” type of sport or physical activity for older adults. Senior Australians are similar to every other population group, in that their interests are often diverse and their physical capabilities are likely to vary greatly. For this reason, lots of different opportunities need to be available to ensure older Australians can continue to participate in sport. She urges anyone aged 65 or over who is considering taking up a modified sport to contact their local sports club or sports development officers to confirm what opportunities are available and explore different options. If you want to get involved Walking football: run in partnership with Active Ageing Australia and member federations is a sustainable version of football specifically modified for older Australians. Walking netball: a modified version of netball designed for senior women and men - netball but at a walking pace. Walking basketball: a low-impact social and fun way to improve the levels of physical activity for inactive and slightly active Australians, including those recovering from injury. Gardening In Summer - What To Grow

From The Hills Organic Garden Community Gardening in summer is sometimes a little challenging people in the Hills District the opportunity to grow vegetables due to the extreme weather conditions we often using organic principles. Age is no barrier so feel free to come experience, along with the unwanted pests and along one Sunday afternoon to have a chat and a look around our beautiful garden. Plus, our produce is shared amongst diseases. However, if you are able to keep the plants well watered during these hotter months, you have a good chance of harvesting some tasty vegetables. The crops we tend to cultivate are tomatoes (cherry-types as they tend to be more pest and disease resistant) as well as capsicums and eggplants which are a good start . Also sweetcorn, radish, snake beans, zucchinis and pumpkins. You can also try rosellas and sweet potatoes. Garden maintenance is important during the hotter months as the grass tends to get a spurt on after the rains, so regular mowing and whipper snipping is a must. Our members are very proud of their garden and we have a wonderful group of enthusiastic people who work hard to keep our Community Garden looking neat and tidy. Resting of the beds in preparation for next year’s planting is also important so as not to overwork the soil. The HOG community is a Tomatoes grown in the Hills friendly group who offer Organic Garden

the members who enjoy taking home freshly picked veggies. Members meet on a Sunday afternoon during the summer months from 3pm to 5pm. You will find us at 416 Bunya Road, Bunya next to the Off Leash Dog Park. Membership Fees per year are $15 for adults, $25 for family and $5 for Juniors. Visit www.hog.org.au, search The Hills Organic Garden on Facebook, or phone 0407 582 980 for information.

That's a Wrap for 2021 An update from the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club The Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club is now in recess for the festive season until the 3rd February 2022. There have been forecasts that Australia will experience conditions resulting from La Nina. That means above average rainfall particularly over the east and northern parts of Australia. November brought wonderful rain to parched areas, but it also increased more growth of lawns and weeds in our local areas and gardeners are kept busy. Here are a few jobs for December/ Water the garden very early in the morning or late in the evening to save. loss through evaporation. Patio and balcony plants need water every day if there's no moisture in the air. If you are taking a vacation, arrange for your garden or indoor plants to be cared for. Fruit flies and other pests are at a peak in December. Make sure any fruit which drops on the ground is gathered. Dispose of it in a black plastic bag. Tie the bag at the top and leave it in the hot sun for a few days. This will cook and kill any insects or their eggs. Then put the bag in the rubbish bin. You may have had suggestions to use old stacked car tyres to contain a garden to grow vegetables, etc. Over time, car tyre rubber releases toxins. The higher the rainfall, the quicker the discharge. The soil acidity and other weather conditions also play a part, and the result is not good for human health when crops grown in contaminated soils are consumed. The club meets at the Enoggera Memorial Hall in Trundle Street. New members welcome. Please phone the president, Pat, on 3356 1256 for more information. PROPERTY GUIDE Needless to say the property market is red hot at the moment. With this in mind, Echo News is delighted to bring our all new monthly North West Brisbane Property Guide to our newspapers. Read on to discover tips and tricks to help sell your home, maximise return and get ready for market.

Buying at Auction - What you need to know

If you’re heading to auction to buy your dream home, make sure you’re aware of the differences between buying a house under standard procedures as opposed to buying at auction. In short, if you buy at auction its final. There is no finance clause, no cooling off period, no get out of jail free card. The house is yours which means you need to have our building and pest reports finalised, and finance secured! Before the Auction Before the auction, make sure you; inspect the property, arrange your finance, get a property valuation, do your own research of the market and get a copy of the contract. In addition, it is wise to obtain legal advice about the terms and conditions in case you’re the successful bidder. Remember to do all the necessary checks, such as a title search, building and pest inspection and a land tax clearance search. At Auction Set a budget before the auction and stick to it. If you are the successful bidder, you will have to settle the contract, even if you can’t afford it.

Registered bidders If you want to bid, ask the auctioneer if there have been late changes to the contract (they must announce the terms at the start of the auction too) and ask any questions you have about the property also register with the auctioneer as only registered bidders can bid on the day. The auctioneer will give you a unique identifier such as a numbered paddle. Reserve Price The reserve price is the minimum sale price that the seller will accept. A seller doesn’t have to set a reserve price, but most will choose to have one. The auctioneer is allowed to tell you whether or not the seller has set a reserve price. However, the auctioneer must not tell you the reserve price itself. Once the reserve price is reached during bidding (or no reserve price is set), the property will be ‘on the market’. The Successful Bidder If you are the successful bidder, you must sign a contract immediately. There are very serious legal consequences if you cannot settle the sale on time.

Thinking of selling? Call your most trusted agent.

Renovating should always ADD $$$

By Tracie Ellis, Founder & CEO of Renovators Directory

Home owners all renovate for different reasons. Whether it be to liberate your indoor/outdoor space, modernise your old home or are looking to sell. Regardless of your motivation, every dollar you invest should add value to your home. Perhaps your property hasn’t been renovated for a number of years, you might be considering making some changes. Now more than ever we are all spending a great deal of time within our home, so our everyday living areas need to function well. It is no secret that renovations come with a great deal of hard work, determination and upheaval. The results should outweigh the efforts and struggles along the way. An oldie but a goodie You may have lived in your home for many years and have pushed aside the fact that you need to renovate. An unmaintained home can be problematic. Broken tiles, structural issues and an inconvenient layout may be impacting your day to day life. Taking time to carefully plan which aspects of your home need attention, you can create mini projects which will come together with your overall main vision, and lift the value of your home. To sell Looking to put your home on the market? There are certain renovations that are crucial to secure buyer interest including: • Quality kitchen (indoor/outdoor); • Modern bathroom; • Outdoor entertaining area with a point of difference. Creating value is about being cost effective in your decisions and not spending more than your category of house could fetch

on the market. Set reasonable expectations of your property’s market price and work towards that. Decorating your house as inoffensively as possible, minimising loud colours, or amenities that only appeal to a small segment of the population. Simultaneously, adding touches that appeal across the board, like a walk-in shower and lots of storage throughout the house are good investments. Remember, value comes from how much other people are prepared to pay. Buyers must be able to imagine themselves moving in effortlessly. DIY V Industry Experts With reality shows ever present, home owners can be lulled into a false sense of security considering tackling renovations on their own. Engaging industry professionals will always give you a high quality outcome. They have the skills and experience to help you consider what is feasible and what is not, what your total costs will look like and the timeframe for the entire project. With the help of professionals, not only will you be spending only what you need, but you can also prevent wasting time, money and valuable resources. Embarking on a renovation by yourself with a view to DIY is ok, so long as you are prepared for the project to cost you more, take a lot longer to complete, and are aware that the process will possibly be a little frustrating. With careful planning and industry experts onboard, every dollar you spend will lift the value of your home. With an entire career spent in construction, Tracie Ellis is well respected for her industry knowledge. She is now leading the way to an exceptional experience in home renovation solutions for business and consumers alike.

From our first meeting to the finalisation of the sale, Bradley was e&tremely professional, knowledgeable and, most importantly to me, he was friendly, kind and compassionate throughout the whole process. I highly recommend Bradley and his team and am e&tremely grateful for the assistance and guidance offered throughout the whole home sale process.

TAX MATTERS

from local experts TaxArana, 2 Glenlee St, Arana Hills

The benefits of engaging a BAS Agent for your business Working with a BAS agent can benefit your business more than you may realise! Many business owners starting out try to save on costs by doing their own bookkeeping, but this is one of the first tasks you can outsource to give yourself time and save money. If you can work on your business to generate more sales, why spend that valuable time on administration and accounts management? A BAS agent is a registered tax professional who can provide a greater variety of services than a bookkeeper. BAS agents are trained in the complexities of GST and other laws – meaning you don't have to become an expert in areas that are not your passion or skillset. What a BAS Agent can do for your business: Once the agent has become familiar with your business operations, they can not only take care of the transactional recording, financial reporting and compliance requirements, but they can assist you in better understanding your day-to-day business performance. A BAS agent can become a trusted member of your management team along with your tax agent, providing accurate and timely financial advice and insights to help you make better business decisions and plan for long-term success. BAS Services: A BAS agent can ascertain and advise the business owner on correct liability amounts and submit statutory reports to the ATO and other agencies on behalf of the owner. If you think it’s time to engage a professional BAS agent, get in touch and let’s talk about how this can benefit your business and save you time and money.

Local History

An update from the Samford Museum In appreciation for the enormous support Melva A Welch has given Samford Museum since the society’s earliest days, members recently presented her with a token of appreciation.

Interspersed with Bunji’s story, the British are sending James Cook on his voyage to the Southern Ocean. Nayef is Melva seated with Geoff, Eileen & Joyce Samford Museum members a talented author and has the ability to bring both Bunji’s story and true Australian history to life. War Chronicles from Our Veterans

Lest We Forget! These simple words are spoken at ANZAC Day Commemorations every year. But how do we ensure that, as a nation, we don’t forget the sacrifices of these ordinary men and women whose actions and experiences were extraordinary? This Story Australia is a charity dedicated to capturing and preserving the significant moments of Australia’s history, as told by those who experienced it first-hand via high-quality video documentaries. In collaboration with This Story, Echo News is delighted to bring you our monthly segment that showcases just a few of the veterans whose full stories can be found at the Queensland State Library. Short bios are available on the This Story’s website at www.thisstory.com.au which has recently been upgraded. If you are a veteran and would like to share your memories, This Story would love to hear from you! Email jeff@thisstory.com.au or call 0439 661 448,

Clarence Whitehorn

Warrant Officer Class 2 - The Australian Army

Clarry arrived in Vietnam in 1969 and joined the 547 Signal Troop. He supervised the interception of communication for the enemy and recalls spoiling an ambush that was set for a group of Americans that saved many lives. Clarry was awarded an OAM for his work with coding machines, their preservation and the transition to new technologies within the Signals component of the Army.

Peter Hegarty

Corporal - Australian Army

Peter was born in Cherbourg on the 1st of December 1943 and voluntarily joined the Army in 1965 to (in his words) "get away from the mission." He served six years and during his service, was posted to Vietnam, Malaysia and Singapore. Peter is very proud of his service and was happy to be one of three close friends from Cherbourg who all served in Vietnam, including Claude Malone and Eric Law. The three mates still return to Cherbourg each year to commemorate Anzac Day together - a promise they made to their parents.

John Fallows

Leading Aircraftman - Royal Australian Airforce (RAAF))

Jon Fallows enlisted in the Air Force in 1964 after being refused enlistment in the Navy due to prior childhood medical conditions of eczema and asthma. His time in Vietnam was split between the flight line and the armoury and he enjoyed both roles. Jon was medically discharged after an accidental bombing up an aircraft and returned to Brisbane and Amberley Airforce base. Jon recounts a very volatile experience upon returning to Australia and it is clear that the scars of the way Vietnam Veterans were treated still have an effect to this day.

Reducing Burnout & Staying ‘Engaged’ over the Holiday This article is brought to you by Social Worker, Elena Bishop. Elena is the director of Supportive Therapy and Social Work in Arana Hills. She has a wealth of knowledge and insight into the industry.

Finally, the end of another year. We have made it! It’s been a tough, long year for us all, and we are definitely feeling the impacts. This time of year, we usually feel the need to take a breath, reflect on the year that you have experienced, and reenergise yourself for the year to come. Psychological Burnout is when we have taken on so much for a long period of time, and we are now feeling the consequences of ‘just keep swimming’ and pushing through each day. When you experience burnout, it is an overwhelming sense of exhaustion, negative feelings of cynicism or pessimism, as well as detachment or disconnection from those around us. This can lead to a sense of hopelessness and lack of accomplishments in everyday tasks which you would normally enjoy. Some people describe it as feeling like drowning, sinking or suffocating. When our family members, friends, or children rely on you to listen or help them out, it can intensify burnout, leaving us with overwhelming emotions. We may feel like we are unable to cope. “How can I possible try to manage my own stuff when everyone keeps on piling their stuff on?” In short, we simply snap. When we experience psychological burnout, it affects every aspect of our lives. This includes our relationships, how we respond or react to others, as well as our enjoyment of things we once looked forward to. It can make you feel like giving up and hiding under anything away from people. This increases isolation, feelings of helplessness and then can spiral into selfsabotage behaviour and negative thoughts about ourselves. Not all is lost! The great thing is now you know why you are feeling this way. It’s not just you! End of year is hard and we are all in the same boat. To recover from burnout, we need self-care. Self-Care is not randomly getting a massage and expecting things to get better, Self-Care is helping us self-soothe (when we are upset and overwhelmed, we talk to ourselves kindly and acknowledge our distress). We need to re-evaluate our life patterns; are there things we can change in our everyday routines that will make us happier? We could develop better coping skills such as retraining our automatic thoughts, and not be afraid to ask for help. We are social beings, reaching out to those we feel trust with to make us laugh. We could add relaxation strategies every day. Yes, every day; it’s important. If you don’t make time for your wellness, your body will force you to make time for your recovery. Be conscious if you are an emotional eater. If you are, that’s ok. Understand why. Set yourself up for success and have better snacks around that won’t make you feel worse, or practice mindfulness every time you open the fridge. Follow the Goldilocks Principle: tasks are not too hard, not too easy—just right! Take time for yourself. Recognise when you are not feeling mentally well and be kind to yourself – give yourself a break. Surround yourself with those who support you and putup boundaries with those who make you feel drained or anxious. Talk to a professional when you are not feeling yourself, as they can help you figure out why. Counsellors can give you strategies on how to grow and evolve into the life we want. We have one life, learning these strategies can set you up for long term happiness.

Counsellor’s Column with Robin Botic

Dear Robin, It has been five years since I have been in a relationship, so why have I picked, after two long term relationships, a person to fall in love with, who ticks all my boxes but is unobtainable as he is moving 4000kms away? Background to this is three months ago I started this relationship with the knowledge that John was going to go. I just thought I’d have a good time as he seemed such a nice guy. This opinion has been validated by watching him interact with others for some years before this. I was particularly impressed with his care of a now deceased partner. I thought I would just have fun and enjoy his company. I had not planned to end up feeling so close and connected as I do now. Am I fooling myself? Because I felt that way in the beginning of each of the other relationships too. The first relationship was physically abusive and I finally found the courage to leave after 23 years. The second was verbally abusive and I left this after 18 years. I am not as stupid as it sounds — each of these guys was a real con in the beginning and it was only when I started to want things for myself or to do things differently, that this behaviour became apparent. What I have learnt from those past relationships is that in the hope of gaining love and acceptance I gave up too much of myself and my needs in the hope that this would be reciprocated and it never was - hence the leaving. Now I finally feel, I found a guy who not only reciprocates my feelings, but is a good choice as he is compassionate, caring and consistently shows behaviours towards others and myself that I respect and would now ask for in a long term relationship. But he is leaving, so what the hell is this about for me? Did I choose him because I did not want to get hurt again and he is going – so I could not fall in love with him and it would be just about having a good time? Have I self sabotaged because I still fear that I don’t deserve a loving relationship? Lesley. Dear Lesley, The relationship shows you, that because you have it, you deserve it. But to find this truth out about yourself you had to con yourself with the idea of a safety net i.e. I can’t get hurt or fall in love because he is leaving. Well that was a con, because you did fall in love. Perhaps however, through that con you have learned a truth about yourself, that you are good enough and do not have to continually give and serve to be loved and accepted. The proof has come in terms of what you have attracted. It is funny how when we think there is an end point

that instead of shutting off our feeling we allow ourselves to be more real, to live and love in the moment. Hollywood is full of these “off to war or terminally ill” type love stories. Whatever the trigger, if we are lucky, it shows us the scope of our potential to love. But with John’s physical leaving, is it really the emotional end? We are not in the days of sailing ships, there is modern technology to enable you to explore your relationship. You say that the feelings are reciprocated, that John ticks all your boxes and this will be one way to find out. It is early days in the relationship and you still have lots to explore. You are aware of how your fears have operated on you in the past, pay attention, this early phase when you are buoyant with all these giddy feelings is a time when a generous heart can yet again easily over step its mark. Take it slow and see if there is a balance in initiation and reciprocation of the type (attention, acceptance, support etc.) that you sought and gave in the past. It is also a very good strategy to clarify how each of you like, give and receive love. How this then happens will let you know the difference between your past and present feelings with regard to the validity of the relationship, sense of closeness and connection. Robin.

Talking Tech with Seniors Committee

Thursday 21st October saw the inaugural function of the Senior Committee of The Hills & Districts Chamber of Commerce with over 50 people (Senagers) attending lunch at the Arana Leagues Club to celebrate Seniors Month and Be Connected Week. A number of senior organisations were represented.

The theme of the lunch was technology, learning about it and our devices. Our guest speaker, Retired Moreton Bay Regional Councillor Brian Battersby OAM, talked on his experiences with learning technology, as a senior. His message was ‘Just learn about it,. You’ll make mistakes. You can’t break it, and it won’t break you.’ Those attending had fun with Technology Bingo, a quiz using technological challenges. The answers to the questions had to be found on our devices and there were good prizes to be won. Thank you to Peter Dutton MP, Mark Furner MP & Tim Mander MP, The Hills & Districts Chamber of Commerce along with S & N Hair, A-Thai-5 Restaurant and Suusanne Jones from Just Better Care who donated prizes for the quiz and to the helpers on the day. It was an enjoyable time for everyone and a thank you to the Arana Leagues Club for their support for the Senior Committee. Dickson News Peter DUTTON MP Federal Member for Dickson

A Message from Peter The last couple of months have flown by and it’s hard to believe this will be my last column for the year. We are rapidly approaching Christmas and the holiday season and I hope you are able to enjoy a break with friends and family ahead of 2022. Thank you to all the students who entered my Christmas card competition, we had some amazing entries and it was incredibly hard to pick the winner in each category. I’d like to congratulate all those finishing year 12. I wish you all the best for your results and future endeavours, whether starting in the workforce or continuing on to complete further study, it is an exciting time and I wish you all the best. If you are travelling over the holidays, stay safe on the roads and enjoy your time away. I look forward to continuing my column in 2022. Best wishes Peter Dickson Seniors’ Expo 2021 I started the Dickson Seniors’ Expo in 2004 with the help of the Dickson Seniors’ Council to support seniors in our local community. Every year since, I have been a proud host and sponsor.

Peter DUTTON MP Federal Member for Dickson

Working hard. Getting results.

Dickson Seniors’ Expo This year’s Expo was held on Tuesday 9 November and was a great success bringing together seniors from all over our community. For the first ever time, we held the Expo at the South Pine Indoor Sports Complex, the new larger venue meant we were able to host over 1000 seniors at different timeslots across the day. The rain held off and by all accounts it was a fantastic success connecting many seniors with local service providers. Over 60 businesses, community groups and other services were showcased as well as special guest speakers and live entertainment. Thank you to all who attended and involved in making the event such a success. Australia Day Dickson Awards Seeking Nominees Nominations are now open for the 2022 Dickson Australia Day Awards. These awards recognise those who, through volunteer work or contributions above and beyond their normal activities, have made our community a better place. Some have made varying contributions over many years; some contribute to a particular area and the contributions of others have spread Australia wide. Excitingly, our 2022 Australia Day Awards ceremony will be our 21st year of acknowledging those who go above and beyond in our community. It will again coincide with our local Citizenship Ceremony, welcoming members of our community as Australia’s newest citizens. If you know someone who has gone above and beyond throughout this difficult year, please visit www.peterdutton.com.au/awards to nominate them for an award. I am looking forward to catching up with and thanking members of our community on Australia Day. What’s important to you? I want to know what’s important to you. We can work together to get the road, facilities and transport upgrades our community needs to get even better. Please get in touch with me at peter.dutton.mp@aph.gov.au or 3205 9977, stop by one of my mobile office caravan visits, or drop in to my office in Strathpine to let me know what your priorities are for our community. To find out more about what’s happening in our community visit www.peterdutton.com.au.

Brian Hallinan – An Environmentalist and a Visionary It is fitting that my last column of 2021 should be dedicated to Brian Hallinan who recently passed away. Brian served as Councillor for The Gap ward from 1982 until 1997, he served under 3 Lord Mayors, including Brisbane’s first female Lord Mayor, Sallyanne Atkinson. As Councillors, we enter public office with the ambition of making our patch better. Brian not only had significant impact on the ward, he also reshaped the fabric of our City and was the genesis of change for which we are still reaping to this day. Born in Townsville in February 1932, Brian started his working life as a cabinetmaker. He had a rich and diverse working life before joining the Liberal Party and entering Council. He was a true believer in giving a hand up, rather than a handout. As Councillor for The Gap Ward he served as Chairman of Council, Chairman of Works and Chairman of Water Supply and Sewerage during his terms. In 1990, Brian proposed, to the then Lord Mayor Sallyanne Atkinson, a need to save the City’s bushland at risk for two reasons. We needed to preserve the City’s lungs, and residents needed green space to enjoy the local outdoors. This was the genesis of the Bushland Levy. The first block was purchased under the scheme at Whitehead Road in the Gap at the foothills of Mt Coot-tha. Sallyanne at the time had already introduced a local plan specifically to protect Mt Coot-tha. We reap the rewards of great vision with 40% of our bushland protected. Brian was a visionary and drew from learned life experiences about sustainable communities whilst working in Papua New Guinea. At this time, the creek system was void of vegetation, similar to gutters and drains. Brian recognised this instability as a problem and set about restoring the waterways with vegetation across Brisbane, creating stability as well as habitat for native wildlife. With the support of Trevor Ozanne, a horticultural lecturer, they formed Save Our Waterways Now in 1994 and supported Men of the Trees in 1994.

Councillors with Brian Hallinan

An avid cyclist, Brian recognised the importance of not only exercising but also cycling as a mode of transport. He built the first bikeway from School Road to Walton Bridge, along Enoggera Creek in the Gap, named ‘The Brian Hallinan Bikeway.’ A true thinker, a lover of nature, a gentleman to the last. Start the New Year off with ‘Movies in The Park’ in The Gap On Saturday 8th January 2022 bring the family along to watch ‘The Zoo Keeper’ on the big screen in Wittonga Park The Gap. Screenings for the ‘Outdoor Cinema in the Suburbs’ are free and open for all to attend. These are family-friendly community events that are sure to please young and old. Films start shortly after sundown, so get in early to secure your spot. Take along chairs or a blanket to enjoy the film. Bring along snacks or purchase from the food trucks. With events throughout the year, there is no need to travel to infinity and beyond, we’re bringing the entertainment to you! This program is another way Brisbane City Council is growing your lifestyle so you can do more of what you love, including spending more time enjoying Brisbane’s beautiful climate and connecting with the people and places that make our city great. Have a Safe Christmas Season - Office Closures Wishing you a safe and festive season over the holiday period. The Gap Ward office will be closed from Thursday 23 December 2021 and reopens Monday 10 January 2022. 3407 1900 For all enquiries please contact the call centre 477 Waterworks Road, Ashgrove QLD 4060 on 3403 8888.

An Update from The Lions Den

From the Golden Valley Keperra Lions Club News with Paul Ryan Well who would have thought that Christmas was just around the corner?

Your Golden Valley Keperra Lions Club has had an amazing year and we are currently busy organising the Hills Carols that will be taking place on the 4th December at George Wilmore Park. Other festive activities include selling Christmas Cakes at the Great Western Shopping Centre and Bob Cassimaty Park on Samford Road, along with making donuts every month at Bracken Ridge. We have also been busy cooking sausages at Harvey Norman Everton Park and Bunnings Keperra. All these fundraising activities allow us to help many local families. On that note, the Golden Valley Keperra Lions would like to thank The Hills Community for their generosity and willingness to support our efforts throughout the year. I would like the thank The Hills Echo for their commitment to our community, giving organisations like Lions a voice. Finally, I would like to thank our members who volunteer whenever requested to serve. Which brings us back to volunteering. Do you have some free time? Would you like to meet new people or learn new skills? If so, then give me a call. Volunteers receive much more than they receive. You can get in touch with me, Paul Ryan on cottontrees@ bigpond.com or call 0409 688 675.

THUMBS UP THUMBS DOWN THUMBS UP to another Christmas. Lots of plans for holidays, lots of pressies for everyone and probably another 5kg to carry around. Trouble is, I am still trying to figure out how to pay off last Christmas! THUMBS DOWN to Qld applying a $150 PCR test to everyone entering Qld. Will not help our crippled tourism industry that so many small businesses rely on to survive. Maybe we should give our pollies a common sense test before elections and see if we can get more than 2 or 3 to qualify! THUMBS UP to a spring returning with some rain and storms. This is the only plan Anna has for SEQ water storage. Millions of immigrants, yet they lessen the capacity in Paradise dam and vow not to build any more dams. Obviously the common sense test failed! THUMBS DOWN to more ‘rabble’ protesting and threatening violence over their rights to freedom from vaccination. What about the 80% of vaccinated Qlders who want to return to a normal life? THUMBS UP to 2021 school leavers off on their next adventure. After a big frustrating year we hope their future paths are easier to navigate. THUMBS DOWN to another Aussie cricket captain ending his career in tears. Extremely poor judgement has consequences by celebrities so just ‘man-up’ and quit. THUMBS DOWN to another inquiry into Qld Health. Why not just admit its a shambles and start to fix the problems rather than run around like headless chooks blaming everyone but Qld Health?

Roger says ...

As long as there are exams, there will be prayer in all schools. The Hills Echo, December 2021 - Page 47
