eBarrows Leading The Way In Sustainable Trail Care

Getting the balance between building and maintaining a fun twisting trail, whilst having minimal impact on the environment can a tricky business. Naturally, one of the prime aims of the Northside Trail Care Alliance (NTCA) is to manage and improve the sustainability of their trail networks with minimal disturbance to the surrounding flora and fauna.

For those not familiar with the NTCA, this is a volunteer organisation helps maintain the trails within Bunyaville and Samford Conservation Parks.

One of the key principals that has been cultivated into the organisation via Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service and the NTCA’s founding volunteers, is to be mindful of the impact of maintenance activities, methodology and equipment used. Machinery that professional trail builders utilise has its place, however for general maintenance, manual labor with shovel, crowbar, mattock, fireman’s rake and wheelbarrows are

key to minimalising the disturbance to the surrounding flora and fauna.

With this in mind, some time ago, one of the groups dedicated volunteers, Matthew Dunn began to tinker and prototype an electric wheelbarrow. This electric wheelbarrow sought minimise damage the trail surface and have the same footprint as a normal wheelbarrow, whilst also assisting and improving the safety for volunteers when transporting materials and tools up or down the narrow, and sometimes steep trails.

In 2017, the first fully working prototype made its debut at a trail care session. It was a true productivity multiplier, dramatically improving the amount of work that could be achieved. This changed the game on how the NTCA planned and completed tasks. The eBarrow has since been developed into a commercial product, and in 2021 Hero Dirt Industries was formed to meet the demand in the trail care industry.

This year, the North Brisbane Mountain Bike Club - the parent organisation of NTCA - received an equipment grant from Moreton Bay Regional Council and last month took delivery of a Hero Dirt Industries electric barrow. The club was also able to purchase a new gazeebo that will be used for trail care and club events.

However, Hero Dirt Industries’ prototyping has not ended there. Currently, a custom battery powered tiller is in development, which will be designed to assist in the creation and maintenance of drainage. This is another very low impact tool that greatly improves ability of the NTCA to further improve the sustainability the trails they help to maintain.

Head over to the NTCA’s Facebook page for more information https://www.facebook.com/NorthsideTrailCareAlliance

Shavers Take The Plunge!

On the 17th of March, the Albany Creek Tavern was awash with bald heads, crazy hair colours and shaved eyebrows. Before you ask—no, this tavern has not converted into a bonkers hairdressing salon! However, it was the location for the annual Albany Creek Community’s World’s Greatest Shave! And what a success the event was.

Team ‘Albany Creek Community’ cranked up the heat with ten shavers braving the clippers to sport new bald heads. Another seven individuals coloured their hair on the night to raise money for vital research and patient support services for those Australians living with a blood cancer or related blood disease. Notable individuals such as Chris Gilding, Eileen Schofield, Jonah Robinson, Lois Shinners, Pete O'Donoghue, and Arren Heeley managed to collectively raise a whopping $7,216, with local Chris G. surpassing his goal of $2,000 by $1— enough to commit to the additional eyebrow shave!

The Albany Creek Leukaemia Branch has been hosting the World’s Greatest Shave locally since 2001, bringing together community groups to raise money and awareness for blood cancer, including Apex, Albany Creek Tavern Social Club, Lions Club, Leukaemia Foundation

Young Henry Gilding was all smiles as Arren from the Hairoloists coloured his hair as part in the World’s Greatest Shave festivities at the Albany Creek Tavern

Branch, local hairdressers, and retailers. It is a testament to the community spirit of the region, the way people have rallied to support a cause so dear to them.

Although the event was full of fun and laughter, the evening also bore the weight of significant reminiscing. Shae Kennedy, an Albany Creek Tavern regular and a man whose history as a World’s Greatest Shaver extends back 25 years, recently passed. Shae always enjoyed being part of the Tavern community at the shave and will be dearly missed. The whole community passes on their condolences to his family and friends.

Special thanks go to the members of the Albany Creek Tavern Social Club, the Albany Creek Apex Club, and our hairdressers – Arren and Jane from Hairologists and Rachael from Albany Creek Hair Directions, all of whom helped make the Shave event a resounding success.

Hills’ History On The Move

The quaint Chapel that sits on the roadside of Hills Church in Everton Hills will be a familiar sight on the commute to work along Queens Rd, and for the more mature residents in our community it will hold a fond memory or two.

However, many may have noticed the construction paraphernalia erected around the Hills Church Chapel boundary in recent months. Do not fear; this old chapel is not going far, as renovations and relocation are both set to take place soon.

After nearly a century of serving the local community through Baptisms, Christenings, and services including hosting the popular Op Shop, the chapel will be transported to the back of the property to the main Church precinct where it can be appreciated and utilised once again. The chapel will also undertake a full renovation carried out by church members. As Pastor Nathan Bell explains, ‘Although the Chapel is not heritage listed, the affection and memories it holds to community members has encouraged the Church to preserve its past.’

‘Even though the chapel in its current state requires considerable refurbishment, we really love its historical significance and connection to our community. The main reason we’re relocating the chapel to another part of the property is because it's sitting idle and is not in use. By relocating the chapel closer to where most of our activity centres on a day-to-day basis, the chapel can receive a new lease of life and honour its original purpose as a place of prayer, or even for small ceremonies such as weddings – and we’re excited about that.’

Indeed, this historic piece of Hills history dates to 1928 when it was constructed on land that was donated by local resident Artur Timms who also donated the timber for its construction. After construction, community members would travel from near and far across what was rough ground back then to reach the church. Due to the small size of the Chapel, it is mentioned that there was no baptistry within it so believers were baptised in a small creek on the Bennett property close by. With the Chapel’s fate in the safe hands of Hills Church, it will once again be enjoyed by the local community and become part of the Hills Church precinct that has recently received a bit of TLC itself.

The complex now boasts a state-of-the-art auditorium and community centre that was opened in September 2022, along with a café, Playgroup and huge Op Shop. The Op Shop has become a popular shopping destination for many residents and helps community members doing it tough. As Pastor Nathan tells Echo News, ‘We often throw open the doors

for residents doing it tough or finding themselves in difficult circumstances. The Church offers items free of charge with no questions asked. Our Church strives to be a place where people experience life giving relationships and give support to the needs in our community.’

‘Although a few hundred meets on a Sunday morning for our worship service, many more from our neighbourhood regularly gather for a wide variety of reasons. From a visit to the Op Shop or Coffee Shop, or parents and their bubs attending one of our playgroup meetings, for support with parenting and relationships (we facilitate the Circle of Security Program), or to receive professional counselling from the Family Support Service.’

It is safe to say that this slice of the Hills’ History will be wellpreserved and protected by the Hills Church. If any readers have history or memories surrounding this little church, we would LOVE to hear from you. Please email admin@echo-news.com.au with more information.

Coaches Preparing For Season Ahead

$4 Million Catchment Investment Announced

Seqwater today announced an expansion of its longrunning partnership with Eatons Hill based land care group, Pine Rivers Catchment Association Inc. (PRCA), with almost $4 million to be invested over the next five years to improve catchment area and water quality of the Upper North Pine River, near Dayboro.

It’s not only the players getting ready for the season ahead, the coaches and umpires at Arana Netball Club are also preparing.

The coaches came together at the beginning of last month for their first planning event and the umpires followed after at the end of March. They will start applying their practical skills during player training following the planning sessions. Bri & Jason are leading a new development program at Arana Netball Club that will help give umpires the confidence and skills to run fixture games. The club has been overwhelmed with new umpires this season and it’s really exciting to see, not only young players stepping up to help their club, but their siblings too. For more information about Arana Netball Club visit www.arananetballclub.com.au

For 15 years, the organisations have been working together with local communities upstream of North Pine Dam (Lake Samsonvale) to control vine weeds that threaten the health of the North Pine River, which is a key drinking water catchment for the Moreton Bay Region and South East Queensland. Seqwater relies on large open catchments covering more than 1.2 million hectares of land, 95 per cent of which we they not own or manage, which is why community partnerships like this are so important to Seqwater achieving better land management and water quality outcomes.

PRCA President Derek Johnson said the new funding would help the not-for-profit organisation to continue to plan and deliver multi-year weed eradication, soil erosion prevention and riparian land care programs.

‘The river was once in a terrible state, with many thousands of riparian trees near death due to cats claw. Now the vines are almost gone, and the river looks amazing, the trees healthy and able to continue to stabilize the river banks, to enhance the condition of the North and South Pine River catchments,’ Mr Johnson said.

The North Pine River catchment is a source of water supply for Dayboro, an off-grid community and also for North Pine Dam (Lake Samsonvale), the region’s fourth largest supply dam.

Bumps & Beyond BULLETIN

Congratulations, you’re pregnant! Now what?

After finding out that they are pregnant, the first point of contact for most women is their general practitioner (GP). As well as offering a variety of tests based on your health and history, your GP will discuss options for place of birth and provide a referral to your chosen care provider. Understanding your options before seeing your GP helps you to not feel overwhelmed by choices.

Public hospital maternity care includes care for low risk and high risk pregnancies. Antenatal (prior to birth) care is provided in hospital outpatient clinics by midwives and/or doctors. You will likely see a different midwife at each visit however, some hospitals offer caseload midwifery, where care is provided by a small team of known midwives throughout your pregnancy. Intrapartum (during labour) care is provided by midwives with assistance from doctors where needed. Postnatal (following birth) care is provided by midwives and starts in the hospital and may continue in the home or community.

Private midwifery care means that all antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care is provided by a private midwife or group of midwives, in collaboration with doctors where needed. All care, including intrapartum, can be provided in a range of locations including clinic rooms, hospital, birth centre and in your own home.

Private obstetric care means that your antenatal visits are performed by a private specialist obstetrician, usually in their clinic rooms. Intrapartum care is provided in a private or public hospital by the private obstetrician and hospital midwives. Postnatal care is provided by midwives in the hospital but usually ceases once you are discharged.

Shared care means that your antenatal care is provided by a specially-trained GP. Intrapartum care is provided in a public hospital by hospital midwives. Postnatal care is provided in the hospital with GP follow up after discharge from hospital.

Choosing the best option for you will depend on personal preference, your medical history, your financial position, and often the experiences or recommendations from family and friends.

Cash rate moves in March: Could debt consolidation be worthwhile?

property finance column from Scott Palazzi, your local Mortgage Broker

A

At the Reserve Bank of Australia’s (RBA) March board meeting, it opted to raise the cash rate by 0.25 percentage points. This takes the cash rate to 3.6%, 3.5 percentage points higher than this time last year.

As interest rates have increased over the last 10 months, many homeowners have been looking for ways to save costs. One way they may have considered is debt consolidation. This can be a beneficial decision for a number of reasons but it may not be right for everyone. We explore who this might be better suited to.

Why consider debt consolidation?

Debt consolidation is where you roll multiple debts, such as personal loans, car loans and credit cards, into one account. This can help simplify repayments as it will only be one rather than multiple. It could also potentially save you money if the consolidated debt is a lower interest rate than when the debts were separate.

There are a number of ways you could consider consolidating debt. These include combining into one personal loan or adding it to your home loan.

Key considerations before consolidating debt

Consolidating debt could be beneficial for many people, however there are a number of factors that need careful consideration before choosing to do so. The main questions to ask include:

• Are there any fees for paying any of the debts off early?

Are there any application, legal or valuation fees or changes to the stamp duty costs?

Are you comfortable with the security? For example, if rolling unsecured personal loans or credit cards into your home loan, your home is used as security. This means should anything happen you can no longer meet repayments, the lender is within its rights to sell your home to recoup costs.

Will the new debt have a longer loan term, which could mean paying more interest over time?

Can debt consolidation impact my credit score?

Credit scores can be impacted in the short term when lines of credit are applied for, particularly if multiple applications are made within a short period of time. However, if you consolidate debt and consistently make your repayments, it could potentially improve your score.

Why see a broker about consolidating debt?

As you can see, debt consolidation can be an effective way for some people to save money and make repayments simpler. However there are a number of considerations to ensure it is the right strategy for you.

We will get to know your situation and goals and crunch the numbers for you to determine whether debt consolidation could be the right choice for you. We also have access to over 60 lenders to find one that suits your needs and offers a competitive rate. Contact me, Scott Palazzi on 0413 747 283 for more information or an informal chat.

ANZAC Fact! Anzac biscuits were traditionally square and so hard that some men were said to have broken their teeth on them. They were sometimes ground down to make porridge, thicken a stew or fried as fritters. They were first supplied as rations and it was only later on that people would make and send the biscuits we are more familiar with today.

They might even need help while dealing with a big life event, such as moving house or having a hospital stay.

2) Spend time with adorable pets

Needless to say, the main benefit of pet sitting is getting to spend time with cute animals! Spending time with pets is great for your mental health, as well as your physical health if you’re out and about walking a dog.

3) Earn some extra cash

With Covid on the back burner, more and more pet owners are looking to get out and about on holiday so now is a great time to pet sit and earn some extra income while doing something fun. Maybe you are saving for Christmas, want to go on holiday or saving for that special something. Pet minding allows you to earn a little bit of extra cash, all the while staying in full control of what breed or size of dog you are willing to welcome into your home.

4) Refine your skills

Being a pet sitter is a great extra skill to have on your resume,

especially if you want to work with animals. Plus, if you are currently studying veterinary science or dog training this is a perfect side hustle to help you through your studies! Pet sitting is hands-on, enriching, and can vary day-to-day between all the different temperaments and breeds of furry clients you’ll meet.

5) Give your pet some company

Especially for dog owners - if your dog would love some canine companionship, dog boarding is a great way to introduce them to new furry friends. Likewise, if your puppy needs socialisation, pet sitting is a great way for them to learn those essential skills from other dogs.

A Jubilant Gem Show

An update from the Mitcheton and Districts Gem Club

Did you visit the National Gem & Mineral Show held at Dayboro over the Easter period ?

Each year the show is held in a different State, so it will be another six years before Queensland get another show like that.

The Mitchelton & Districts Gem Club Inc had a table promoting their club and they also sold items that were made by members.

The club hopes to hold two field trips this year. One to Lismore and one to Chinchilla, for petrified wood. Besides these field trips many of our members arrange their own trips to collecting localities such at Agate Creek and the Gemfields at Anakie and Rubyvale in Central Queensland. When they find suitable material they bring it to our workshop at Ashgrove and make cabochons for jewellery or facet the sapphires they have found.

If you are interested in seeing what we do or would like to have a chat about our hobby, please visit our clubhouse at 40-46 Ferneydell Street, Ashgrove on one of the workshop days being a Thursday morning and a Saturday afternoon. There is also a silverwork session on Thursday afternoon. You can also visit our website –www.mitcheltondistrictsgemclub. wordpress or view us on Facebook - Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club Inc .We look forward to welcoming new members to our Club.

Honouring Veterans Legacies through their Stories

This Story Australia is a local Moreton Bay charity preserving Australia’s history through documentary interviews with our diggers. The charity engages with veterans from all conflicts – from WWII through to Afghanistan – to preserve their personal stories and ensure veterans have a digital platform on which they can share their experiences.

This Story has a great working relationship with the Queensland State Library to ensure that stories are not only archived at a State level, but made available to the public for free anytime in their catalogue. The stories are also searchable and readily accessible on This Story Australia’s website.

To date they have interviewed over 50 veterans across NSW, the Northern Territory and Queensland including stories from our own Moreton Bay veterans residing in Deception Bay, Mango Hill, Woodford, Redcliffe and Albany Creek. CEO Jeff Hughes is eager to ensure veterans in our own area are given the opportunity to share their stories.

‘We are reaching out to Moreton Bay businesses to partner with us to make a real difference to veterans and their community. It is great for us collectively to remember on ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day, but it is even more important for us to take action.’

In February 2023 one of This Story Australia’s veteran stories was awarded Best Short Documentary in the Mykonos International Film Festival. ‘Second Generation ANZAC’ shares the service and life of 105 year old veteran Alf Carpenter of Newcastle. Alf learned of the selection of his story among

the film festival finalists in Greece last year before his passing in September. Alf was overjoyed at the thought that he could share his story about his experiences in the Battle of Crete in 1941 with the people of Greece today.

‘Veterans stories matter, and our community wants to learn and honour their legacy’ says Jeff Hughes. ‘These are the lives of ordinary people and their extraordinary accomplishments, and they have the power to connect the community.’

Local Group Leading A Running Revolution

Many VERY early commuters in the Eatons Hill may have noticed a surge in the amount of runners pounding the pavement over the past year. No, this is no zombie apocalypse, and there is nothing to run from, besides the harsh reality of dawnbreak alarms. This mob belong to local running group ‘Run With Rob’(RWR) and they have seen exponential growth in members recently.

Now, for many, getting up at 4am to exert your body to its limits might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but this cluey bunch are on to something. For one, running early on is way cooler and less strain on the bod, two, getting your exercise out of the way for the day and loading yourself with those happy endorphins or catching that ‘runners high’ as they call it is a great way to get the day started.

Mind you, this is no ordinary running group. For a start, their morning dashes aren’t purely for the benefit of each runner’s fitness, but rather to help those in need along with creating a supportive community. At the forefront of the group’s values is helping the community, whether that be by donating to charities, forging friendships with one another to form a supportive network, or achieving personal and group running goals. This group runs for a reason and is open for community members just getting into running to the more experienced runner. Plus, they are excited to now introduce a Ferny Hills morning group AND afternoon sessions at Warner Lakes, so if getting up at dawn break isn’t your vibe, join the group in the afternoon sunshine. The group was founded back in 2014 by revered local and a notoriously talented Ultra Marathon Runner Rob Hopkinson, who runs marathons to support charities that tug on his heart. Last year, his choice was ‘Small Steps 4 Hannah’—a foundation that seeks to end cycles of domestic violence and be the guiding light for those who need the confidence to act. Now Rob is an official ambassador for this charity, amongst others his group raises money for. Speaking to Rob, he is quite humble about the inception of the RWR group.

‘I wanted to inspire and support our RWR community to be the best versions of themselves so that together we can make a difference by supporting our preferred charities. We now have donated over $90 000 to local charities,’ Rob told Echo News. But we don’t think the extent of what Rob has created has dawned on him. The running group has helped changed the lives of its members in so many ways other than in the health sector. For proud member Renee, it has helped her find her path: ‘After having kids I felt lost—I needed something that was just for me—and didn’t include mass amounts of food and alcohol! Run With Rob helps with every aspect of my life—health, fitness, friendship, mental and emotional stability. I found what’s been missing in my life.’

Another member, Bridgette, explains that, ‘Run With Rob has changed my life by pushing me out of my comfort zone with my fitness but also by providing a network of friends. Everyone who joins the group has the same ethos. For example, if a family member is ill, we will arrange a care package. If a dog is lost, we will go and help find it. If someone wants a running partner at 8pm, there will be a willing participant.’

Led by Rob, the group has some exciting events coming up, including Dead Cow Gully Ultra, Run Army, Noosa Running Festival, Wondai Running Festival, Moreton Bay Running Festival, Brisbane and Bargara Running Festivals, Gold Coast Marathon, Jetty 2 Jetty, and Sunshine Coast Marathon, where they hope to set the record as the biggest team for the 2nd year in a row.

What’s more, this group will be hosting a ‘Pink Night’ again this year, and are currently scoping for a venue that will hold close to 200 guests, along with decorations to make the night that extra bit special to raise money for charities are also in progress. If you are a local business and can support the fundraiser in anyway, the RWR community would love to work with you, get in touch via the contact details below.

Winnie - Working Wonders

Our Lady of Dolours School at Mitchelton has welcomed a new staff member to its ranks – Winnie, a therapy dog. Winnie is owned by School Chaplain, Mrs Rachel Stigter, and has recently completed her final accreditation.

“Winnie has always been a very calm and gentle dog”, said Mrs Stigter. “People would often say that she’d make a wonderful therapy dog and that started me thinking about the potential for introducing her as a support animal in our school environment.”

“Winnie was in training for over six months before she received her certification”, said Mrs Stigter. “We had regular visits to O.L.D. to get her used to the school and to help students and staff get used to interacting with her.”

“She achieved her accreditation just before we celebrated wellbeing week at Our Lady of Dolours”, she said. “This meant we were able to start wellbeing week with Winnie’s presentation at a fully-fledged therapy dog, which was wonderful! The children were so invested in Winnie’s success; it was a perfect start to the week.”

Principal, Mrs Tricia Howard, is a great advocate of the benefits of therapy dogs at school.

“The education system has certainly evolved over the years”, said Mrs Howard. “We are much more attuned to individual student needs. At Our Lady of Dolours we are very committed to meeting students at their level, and providing appropriate supports to help all children meet their full potential.”

“The benefits of a therapy dog in an educational setting are well documented” continued Mrs Howard. “They provide significant social-emotional support and lower the stress levels of young people.”

“Therapy dogs have been shown to improve the physical wellbeing of students, decrease anxiety, ease social isolation, and help children learn social skills.”

In particular, therapy dogs are credited with impressive results in supporting young people in improving literacy and reading skills.

“We are definitely focusing on using Winnie for literacy support at O.L.D.”, said Mrs Howard.

“Research suggests that reading with a therapy dog can bring about significant improvements in reading”, she said. “Therapy dogs, like Winnie, help children focus. They provide a non-judgemental environment, which increases self-confidence, and encourages a love of reading and of learning in general.”

“At the core of what we do at O.L.D. is an understanding that our students come to us with differing needs, abilities and interests, and that effective learning only happens when we are able to respond to children as individuals”, said Mrs Howard.

“Winnie is a wonderful addition to our existing student supports. I am confident that we will see some amazing results from our newest member of staff.”

Music To Feed The Soul

With 10 years in the local area under his belt, Scotty Wade, owner and drum teacher of STW Drumming is ready to take that next step and offer more services for the local community.

What was STW Drumming, has now transformed into the STW Music School. Branching out to not just include Drum Lessons, but Vocals, and Guitar lessons, these lessons are offered to anyone in the local community of any age! Many people do not realise that anyone can play an instrument, and Scotty wants to show you it’s possible! After stumbling into drumming through a bit of a rebellious period in his life 25 years ago, this talented local has since discovered the craft can help any one of all ages to improve their confidence, focus, co-ordination and inner voice!

Scotty has been a drummer for 25 years, with humble beginnings. From the age of five Scotty wanted to play drums, but his parents thought that it was a phase. They thought it would burn out in a week or at most, a month. However, music for Scotty was so much more and not just on the surface, it ran a lot deeper for him. Music was, and is, a part of his being. After buying a drum kit behind his parents back early on, 25 years later, Scotty has since been touring in bands, playing in over 15 bands, to now being the owner/drum teacher of STW Drumming since 2012! He now wants to show that playing a musical instrument can help any one of all ages to improve their confidence, focus, coordination and inner voice!

Starting at home, STW Drumming has evolved from small beginnings to branching out to other avenues. Not just providing professional and fun drum lessons, but also guitar, and vocal lessons. There is always more music to go around to the enhance the soul and bring ones confidence and self-belief to the forefront. At STW Music School, all the teachers encourage each student’s personal growth as a human, and as a musician!

Scotty’s belief is if you believe it, work for it, and you will get it. Anyone can play an instrument, and when step into the STW Music School, you will believe you can!

Fascinating Frogs At MPC

The children at Mitchelton Pre-Schooling centre were lucky to have a visitor named Jan who brought in some tadpoles from her garden pond for the children to observe.

The tadpoles stayed at the Kindy for the children to look after and observe until they turn into froglets after which Jan will take them back to her pond.

Over the past few weeks, the children have had an upclose experience observing tadpoles metamorphosis into froglets. At first the tadpoles had only a tail, then two legs grew at the back followed by two legs at the front. Once they start breathing air the tadpoles’ tails start getting shorter and they began to swim to the surface to breathe. Peter Combes song called “Tadpole Blues” helped the children to role play the frog life cycle.

The Frog display, on loan from the ‘Queensland Museum’ sparked further investigation and thinking about frogs. Where do they live? What do they eat? “Not all frogs are green!”

Mitchelton a Pre-Schooling centre have two ponds and three frog hotels to entice frogs into their environment. Last year the MPC community were excited to hear the call from the striped mash frog and noticed a bubble nest in one of the ponds. Unfortunately, the eggs didn’t hatch. A small green tree frog amongst the greenery in their gardens. The children will continue to do what they can to make the Kindy a safe place for frogs. What can you do at home to help? Make frog hotels, use solar lights to

German Immersion Turns 20!

A lot has changed in 20 years, but the German Immersion program at Ferny Grove State High School continues to remain as one of the key signature programs offered to students. And in 2023, marking the 20th year of the program, Ferny Grove will host an Anniversary celebration at the school on Friday 26th May.

Supported by the Language Parents Support Group (LPSG), the formal ceremony will commence at 4:30pm in the Ralph Took Auditorium, followed by food, drinks, activities as well as the chance to meet with former students and staff involved in the program.

“The occasion is a wonderful celebration of a program that has been at the heart of our languages program for the past 20 years,” Acting Head of Department for Languages and International Student Programs, Murray Belkin said. The event will begin with guest speakers from an array of invited guests who have played a crucial role in the successful establishment and running of the program, including current German Immersion Coordinator, Dr Helen Nicolson Setz.

Dr Nicolson Setz believes the program has yielded enormous benefits for our students both past and present. “The program has no doubt broadened world view as well as opened study and career opportunities for many students,” Dr Nicolson Setz said.

“Our partnerships with the Goethe Institut and PASCH networks have been instrumental in developing a program that enables us to share the rich variety of German language, learning and culture.”

“There is a strong emphasis on developing long-term positive relationships with students, teachers and our school community.”

The German Immersion program involves students from years 7-10 learning the same curriculum as other students, however with one significant difference. These subjects are taught in German, developing the student’s language proficiency through learning the regular curriculum in the target language.

Ferny Grove invites any past or present students and/ or families involved in the program to attend the evening running from 4:00pm-7:00pm (formal ceremony begins at 4:30pm) at the Auditorium and W Block courtyard on Friday 26th May. A Busy Season Ahead At HOG

An update from the Hills Organic Community Garden

Our summer months have been rather hot and dry, which is not so good for our garden. Very little has been grown over the last few months with not much produce to share. However, autumn has arrived and hopefully it will bring cooler temperatures.

There is a lot of work to be done at the garden this month with a view to getting the beds ready for planting. They all need topping up with new soil, compost, and fertiliser added, along with time to rest. Planting will take place when the temperatures get cooler to give the young plants a chance to survive and grow.

Our vegetable planting will consist of broccoli, spinach, radish, snow peas, silver beet, cauliflower, cabbages, zucchinis, eggplant, lettuce, beetroot and tomatoes. As it is not recommended to plant the same crop in the same bed as the previous season, we ensure that crop rotation is carried out. This is the fun time of the year for the Community Garden and also a busy time as the newly planted seedlings will need regular watering and fertilizing.

The HOG community is a friendly group who offer people in the Hills District the opportunity to grow vegetables using organic principles. Age is no barrier, so feel free to come along one Sunday afternoon to have a chat and a look around our beautiful garden. Our members meet on a Sunday afternoon from 3pm to 5pm They also attend the garden through the week to water and do general maintenance. You will find us at 416 Bunya Road, Bunya, next to the Off Leash Dog Park. Membership Fees per year are $15 for adults, $25 for family and $5 for Juniors For more information, visit www.hog.org. au, search ‘The Hills Organic Garden’ on Facebook or phone 0407 582 980. We look forward to meeting you!

Blend Your Bugs!

Collect those pests and liquify them in a blender using one part water to two parts bugs. Strain, put the liquid in a spray bottle and use as a very effective, natural insecticide. Of course, it also helps to have a designated blender for this rather than what you use in the kitchen.

Successful Rose Growing

From the Ferny Grove Garden Club

The next meeting of the Ferny Grove Garden Club will take place on Friday 28th April at 1pm. Members will enjoy a talk by Shirley Dance on successful Rose going. There will be the usual competition of eight catagories of horticulture, followed by afternoon tea. The club meets at 1pm on the last Friday of each month at St Matthew’s Church Hall, Church Road, Mitchelton. For more information, please contact Elizabeth on 07 3851 0568.

A Mystery Meeting in the Works

An update from the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club

The Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club will meet again on Thursday 4th May. The topic for this meeting is still a mystery, so do come along and find out what it is about. Visitors and new members are most welcome.

Spring flowering plants and bulbs should be planted where they are to grow, by the end of April. Twice the height of the bulb is the depth it should go in the ground. To reduce transplant shock, always water in seedlings with Seasol and don't neglect to give them shade. Small branches from shrubs are good to use. As the leaves on the cutting die and drop, the seedling is exposed to more sun. Also, the seedling will develop into a bushier plant if you nip off the centre growing point. It's time to check your citrus trees for lumps on the branches where the citrus gall wasp has laid its eggs. The best way to get rid of the lumps is to prune the affected part off the tree and put it in the garbage bin.

Mother's Day occurs next month so put on your thinking caps and come up with a living gift she'll have for years. Our meetings takes place at the Enoggera Memorial Hall at 36 Trundle Street, Enoggera. The hall is close to public transport and accessible by wheelchair. Meetings commence after morning tea which is served at 9.45 am. Visitors and new members are most welcome. For more information, please phone the president, Pat, on 3356 1256 or email mitcheltongc@gmail.com

How To Argue And Always Win

This article is brought to you by Social Worker, Elena Bishop. Elena is the director of Supportive Therapy and Social Work in Arana Hills. She has a wealth of knowledge and insight into the industry.

Good communication can improve relationships by increasing intimacy, trust, and support. Poor communication can weaken bonds, creating stress, mistrust and even disrespect. Good listening means helping the other person feel heard and understood; don’t think about what you will say next, just listen. It’s also common to be so defensive and entrenched in your own perspective that you literally can’t hear the other person’s point of view. There is a ‘cycle of stuck’ where one person feels they are being criticised, and instantly get defensive and dysregulated (flight fight freeze fawn). Thus, the toxic cycle perpetuates.

There are some simple rules you can follow to have healthy communication. They are;

1. Remain calm and be conscious of ‘quick to anger’: leads to an explosion

2. Be conscious of being defensive (denying, rejecting) which prevents listening

3. Over-generalisations: “You always do this” “You never do that”

4. Keep the past in the past; stop bringing up past conflicts and blaming the other

5. Everyone is different; there is no right or wrong point of view. Both can be valid

6. Don’t assume and mind read what you think they are feeling. a.ka. misunderstandings

7. Listen. Take turns. Both listen, then talk: use talking ‘stick’

8. Blame game? Admitting weakness isn’t a fault, it’s a strength!

9. It’s not a competition for who wins the argument. The goal is peace.

10. Be kind, don’t attack character (lazy, needy, annoying)

11. Relax the defensive wall to let their words in Communication is pointless without comprehension. We need to explain - what is your perspective, what are you feeling, and why is it important? When we can figure out why we are really angry, we can begin to understand what we need to feel better. Simples…

When you are feeling overwhelmed Stop Separate Self Soothe. When we face an emotional threat (like an argument) our fight flight freeze defense system is activated: adrenaline, heart beats faster, blood pressure goes up. You can‘t think. So Stop - Time Out for 30 min. Self soothe (walk, breathing, music)

During this time, Reflect upon your emotions and understand why you are upset. Reflect on what really happened. How did it start and how did it escalate? What was your strongest emotions (disrespected, hurt, offended, abandoned)? What response will make you feel safe (more secure, connected, loving, generous)?

Connect again. Very important to help resolve the conflict and make sure it doesn’t keep reoccurring. Reconnect. Be calm. To move on you need to resolve otherwise it will build up again. Reflect on attachment & what you need. Use the below dialogue to talk...Brainstorm on how to resolve this issue. Try to find a “win - win” resolution. Once it is resolved, keep it in the past. Move on & don‘t talk about it again. Say 1 thing that you appreciate in the other person.

The secret to having a Win-Win situation is to come back together and explain what you need. Use the template “I felt (insert emotion) when you (specific behaviour) so I need (positive outcome)”. The other person will understand why you are upset, and how to fix it. Essentially, preventing it from happening again. Plus, we both spoke about ‘it’ without pushing it under the rug. That sounds like a win to me

Inspirational Voice Of Our Youth Tackle Courageous Topics

The voice of our youth was an inspiration for all at the club's annual Youth of the Year Australia competition last month.

Nine impressive senior high schoolers from Mitchelton State High School, Mt Maria College, Everton Park State High School, Padua College Kedron (Official) and St James College participated in the event held at the Kakowan Community Facility Bunya.

The competition sees each student submit an application and attend an interview by three volunteer judges. Further, they deliver answers to two impromptu questions, followed by a five-minute prepared speech to a live audience. The students courageously tackled prepared speech topics ranging from bridging the gender pay gap, social media and the global water crisis to bodily autonomy and the importance of pain.

The Overall Winner on the day was St James College

Vice-Captain Keiriana Dargin-Clark who spoke about the Indigenous Voice to Parliament. She will now compete in the zone final in the lead up to the State final in April.

The winner of the Public Speaking certificate was Everton Park State High School Sports Captain Lily Anderson.

The Club's Youth of the Year Chair, Ms Claire Grlj said interest from students entering the competition had increased considerably in 2023.

‘The students were willing to challenge themselves, and their reward is learning skills that will serve them as they attend job interviews, advocate for others and express their views socially or in the workplace.’

‘It’s a great opportunity for students to build their courage and usually, they go on to tackle bigger challenges.

‘We wish the overall winner Keiriana the best as she competes in the next level of the competition,’ Ms Grlj said.

About Youth of the Year: Each year, Lions Australia hosts the prestigious Youth of the Year public speaking program. The national competition is aimed at fostering leadership skills and other citizenship qualities to bring forth the next generation of outstanding young Australians.

Happy Easter

I just wanted to take the time to wish you and your family a happy Easter. Easter is a time for hope and renewal and for families to come together and celebrate. Please enjoy your holidays and stay safe on the roads if you are travelling.

ANZAC Day Services

ANZAC Day is our chance to let our servicemen and women – past and present – know that their service and sacrifice is remembered, appreciated and honoured.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the end of Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam war. Between 1962 and 1972 almost 60,000 Australians served in the conflict, and we pay our respects to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice as well as those veterans’ still with us, many of whom continue to bear the wounds seen and unseen.

We must never repeat the mistakes of our past by disrespecting and mistreating the men and women who proudly wear the uniform in defence of our flag, values and country.

Drop into The Hills Bakery Café and grab a free cuppa and have a chat with me about the things that matter to you. Saturday 6 May from 8:30am. My shout!

Local High School joins the Hydrogen Revolution

Queensland has the potential to be a hydrogen superpower. By 2040 the industry is expected to grow by $19 billion and create an additional 4,350 jobs in our state.

Ferny Grove High School is one of the 32 high schools across Queensland which the Premier has announced will participate in the Hydrogen Gateway to Industry Schools program.

The industry-led program builds on the investments in science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics (STEAM) which we have made across the Ferny Grove Electorate. Our schools and our students are thriving, and I am excited to see our kids build their dream careers in our clean energy future right here in our own backyard.

Draft E-Products Action Plan Released

Last month Peter Newland from Planet Ark Power in Enoggera played host to Wayne Smith from the Smart Energy Council, Minister Mick de Brenni and me as we launched the Palaszczuk Government’s draft E-Products Action Plan.

The plan aims to target electronic waste – including solar panels and batteries and seeks to build a circular economy for renewable energy products.

We know Queenslanders care about the environment, that’s why we’re leading the nation on solar uptake.

Now Queenslanders are being encouraged to have their say on the draft plan, which could see solar panels banned from being dumped into landfill.

To keep end-of-life panels out of landfill, we are committed to improving recycling and resource recovery.

That’s why we’re also investing $250,000 to kick off an industry-led Solar Stewardship Scheme pilot, led by the Smart Energy Council.

Queenslanders have until 17 April to have your say on draft plan https://bit.ly/3yUZom2

Queensland Health is warning this year’s flu season could be a nasty one. That’s why I dropped in to get my Flu Shot at Dallas Pde Terry White Chemmart where the Pharmacist Tahnee tells me I was the lucky first flu shot recipient of the season

Great Results All Round

Good Result for a Great Cause

After two years of campaigning, the LNP has had a win in the battle against youth crime with parliament agreeing to our push for breach of bail to be an offence for young offenders. This is an acknowledgement from the Palaszczuk Government its decision to water down youth justice laws in 2015 has created a generation of repeat offenders. But more needs to be done to help keep Queenslanders safe. This is the first of many changes we are campaigning for. The current youth justice system is failing at both ends of the spectrum. Listening to Queenslanders we will continue to fight for:

• Removing the rule of detention as a last resort in sentencing and

• An independent audit of early intervention programs Removing detention as a last resort unshackles the judiciary and gives them discretion to send youth criminals to detention when warranted.

We must also get serious about early intervention services to help guide kids back onto the rails before it’s too late. Thank you for those that have written to me about this issue. I will continue to listen to constituents and work hard to make sure people feel safe in our community.

On 25th February I had the privilege to referee the Queensland Police Service Memorial Legends Rugby League game to honour the lives of Constables Matt Arnold and Rachel McCrow who tragically lost their lives serving our State. May they rest in peace.

More Great Results with Clean Up Australia Day

A big thank you to all those who stepped up to clean up and help us get rid of ugly rubbish around Teralba Park. We had a great turn-out with 35 enthusiastic volunteers who dug in and removed lots of unwanted garbage from our parkland and along the creek bed. One young lad even found an old lounge chair!
