In a heartwarming initiative to foster literacy among children, the Story Dogs Program has found a new home at the Arana Hills Library.

Introduced by the non-profit literacy charity ‘Story Dogs Australia’ to the local Lions Club, this program has been gaining traction, thanks to the dedication of volunteer Georgie Crew and her adorable little pug, Winston.

The program invites children to read to Winston in a non-threatening environment, alleviating the pressure of children having to read aloud. This simple yet effective approach has proven to be immensely rewarding, improving the literacy skills of young readers around the Hills District.

Georgie Crew, a 76-year-old enthusiastic volunteer at the Golden Valley Keperra Lions Club, along with her 5-year-old pug Winston, has been a pivotal part of this initiative. Georgie, who also volunteers at the club’s café every Tuesday morning, sought to extend her community service by enrolling Winston in the Story Dogs Program. Membership Chair Paul Ryan of the Lions Club shares that Winston is accredited annually for his role in the program and has become a beloved fixture at Grovely State School, showing up for weekly reading sessions with Grade 1 students and upwards.

As well, every Monday afternoon, from 3:30pm

onwards, Georgie and Winston settle on a cozy blanket in Arana Hills Library, ready to welcome a stream of children. Each child gets undivided attention as they read to Winston on the blanket during their booked-in time slot. This one-on-one interaction not only enhances their reading skills but also provides a comforting and enjoyable experience. Our journalist, Georgia Wright, was thrilled to be invited along to one of these sessions and witness the positive impact first-hand (and cuddle with Winston!).

On the afternoon, Georgie shared with Georgia some amusing anecdotes about Winston, reflecting on the charm Continued on page 5

Continued from page 3 and personality of her beloved pug. The Lions volunteer firmly believes that the “Pig the Pug” children’s books by Aaron Blabey are uncannily truthful in telling a story of a food-fixated pug. Winston‘s obsession with treats is no different. However, though a bit overweight, Winston’s indulgence is managed carefully during sessions. For safety, children place treats on the ground and signal him to eat by booping his nose!

Winston‘s calm demeanour, shaped by his many interactions with Georgie‘s great nieces and nephews, makes him an ideal reading companion—if you ignore his relentless snorting and panting! It seems that his quiet moments are reserved only for enjoying treats or a good old ear scratch.

Echo News highly encourages the local community to participate in this enriching program. Sessions at the Arana Hills Library begin at 3:30 PM every Monday afternoon. This initiative not only supports children‘s literacy but also brings smiles to all who meet Winston and Georgie.

For more information and to book a session, visit the Arana Hills Library or contact the Lions Club. Come along and experience the joy of reading with Winston, the Story Dog!

First homes break ground at The Quarry as Keperra transformation continues

The first homes at one of Brisbane’s largest masterplanned communities are breaking ground as Frasers Property Australia continues to transform The Quarry, 9.5km north-west of the Brisbane CBD.

The Quarry has reported a strong start to the year with Release One’s 29 lots now sold out and 95% of the 20 land lots in Release Two secured, including a new record sale price for vacant land at Keperra.

The third land release, featuring the most elevated blocks so far, launched in April and is already 85% sold.

Brisbane local Sam Campbell and his partner will upsize from their Ashgrove apartment, securing a primely positioned 542 sqm lot for $950,000 at The Quarry, with plans to build an architecturally designed home styled by an interior designer.

‘We are building a five-bedroom home with an L-shaped design which takes advantage of the elevated aspect and views,’ Mr Campbell said.

‘The master suite is positioned at the northern corner of the property with views right up towards the Sunshine Coast.

‘The vibe we’re going for is contemporary, so there will be some curved edges and different textures like a mixture of stone and timber cladding.

‘The design elements of The Quarry and the stone featured around the development are consistent with our own home design vision. We are keen to start building right away,’ he said. Frasers Property Australia’s General Manager Development Queensland, Scott Ullman, said a diverse mix of home buyers had been drawn to the community’s elevated lots with breathtaking vistas and various orientations, as well as the popular addition of private pools.

‘At The Quarry, buyers have the rare opportunity to build their forever home from scratch in a truly unique and irreplaceable setting, with the opportunity to tailor their designs in a way that is unlike established homes in the area,’ Mr Ullman said.

‘They can also select the builder of their choice or connect with one of The Quarry’s recommended partners to make the experience truly unique.’

Stylemaster Homes’ General Manager Sharon Piconi said they had seen significant interest in The Quarry from the

retail market and will be featuring two display homes along Ridgeline Way.

‘Our homes are designed to maximise the block proportions, aspect and spectacular quarry view lines, with facades incorporating premium freeform stone cladding and timber accents,’ Ms Piconi said.

‘With extensive experience delivering innovative designs, premium inclusions and superior quality constructions, these displays will showcase everything we have to offer, and the endless possibilities for buyers who choose The Quarry.

‘Excitement is building amongst our staff, industry partners and clientele alike who are eagerly watching our new designs, specially developed for this project.

‘Frasers Property has developed an impressive vision which seamlessly merges liveability with the best of the natural environment, optimum amenities and convenient CBD accessibility.’

Brisbane’s north-west is experiencing strong demand for new housing supply with proximity to leading schools, healthcare and major transport infrastructure, and limited infill development sites remaining in the region.

The existing Keperra Quarry, which mines granite, has operated for more than 60 years and will progressively curb operations as the development of the residential stages advance.

Prices for available lots at The Quarry start from $580,000. For more information, visit www.quarrykeperra.com.au

Beloved Blackwood Street Halloween Festival Cancelled for 2024

In a disappointing turn of events for local residents, the beloved Blackwood Street, Mitchelton Halloween Festival has been cancelled for 2024. The decision comes after the expiration of a three-year funding contract between Brisbane City Council and the Mitchelton Rotary Club in 2023.

The 2023 festival, held on Sunday, October 29th, saw over 5,000 attendees and was celebrated as one of the best events in the festival’s history. However, a number of key members from the Mitchelton Rotary Club’s Halloween sub-committee have either moved

away from Brisbane or are on extended holidays, leaving the club unable to organise the event this year.

While this news is a blow to the community, there is hope that another organisation may step in to host the festival in the future. The Mitchelton Rotary Club remains committed to community involvement and continues to seek support for its various activities.

‘We deeply regret not being able to hold the festival this year,’ said a representative from the Mitchelton Rotary Club. ‘We are actively looking for new volunteers and members to help us continue our community work.’

For those interested in supporting the Mitchelton Rotary Club or inquiring about membership, please visit their website at mitcheltonrotaryclub.org.au or contact them via email at mitcheltonrotary@ gmail.com. Alternatively, the incoming President for 2024-25, Ian Cameron, can be reached at 0434 079 035.

The community's enthusiasm for the Halloween festival is undeniable, and it is hoped that with continued support and new volunteers, the event can make a triumphant return in the coming years

Samford Rangers FC Latest Victim Of Copper Thieves

Samford Rangers FC became the latest casualty of a copper theft spree impacting local sports clubs.

Thieves have stolen copper from the electrical pits connected to the field lighting, rendering the lights on Field 3 inoperable. This incident follows a disturbing trend of similar thefts at other clubs, including Mitchelton FC, who were hit across four nights, and multiple incidents at North Star FC, Caboolture FC, Northside Christian Football Club and Nudgee Recreational Reserve. Furthermore, The Moreton Bay Lions AFL Club has been targeted three times, with one theft resulting in the loss of 14.7 kilometers of cable.

Copper theft is a growing issue for Brisbane sporting clubs, causing widespread disruption. Queensland police data indicates a sharp rise in copper thefts over the past two years, with energy providers reporting that infrastructure targeting has tripled during this period.

Samford Rangers FC is now facing short-term disruptions as they work on a sustainable solution. The club is concerned about the possibility of repeat thefts, which often occur shortly after repairs are made and also exploring preventative measures, although these will come at a cost. ‘We would rather spend this money on value-adding services for our members, but we don't really have a choice,’ said Samford Rangers President Mathew Kilkelly.

The theft at Samford Rangers FC likely occurred on Monday, July 22nd, sometime after 10pm. The club is appealing to anyone who saw suspicious behavior near Field 3, particularly close to the cow paddocks, to contact them as the police are involved. Additionally, Samford Rangers FC asks the community to remain vigilant, especially when driving past the parklands at night, as thieves often return to ‘finish the job.’

Current legislation under the Second-Hand Dealers and Pawnbrokers Act 2003 allows thieves to take stolen copper to a pawn broker without proof of ID, receive a cash payment, and walk away. Queensland is the only State that has not

The pits are connected to the field lighting introducedlawtopreventthisfromhappening.Perhapssimple legislative changes could effectively end the resale market for stolen copper immediately, a measure far more effective than CCTV, deterrent devices, or further stretching the resources of police, Energex, and Council.

Sports clubs across Brisbane are now being forced to seek alternatives to copper wiring, driven by the need to protect their facilities from these thefts. The community's support and vigilance are crucial in addressing this ongoing issue and ensuring the functionality of local sports infrastructure. Community Rallies Behind Local Lad’s Fundraising Efforts for Brain Cancer

The Little Gossip Café, a beloved cornerstone of our community, has recently taken on a heartfelt mission to support one of their own in a time of profound loss and to raise awareness for brain cancer.

Fedie El Tahan, a dedicated worker at Little Gossip Café, tragically lost his brother Joseph to brain cancer. In honour of Joseph’s memory and to bring attention to the critical need for brain cancer research, Fedie is spearheading a fundraising initiative for the Mark Hughes Foundation with the help of his cherished workplace. So far, the fundraising pot has surpassed the initial goal of $10,000 by an additional $1,250 as of July 29!

‘I can't express enough gratitude to the community around Little Gossip Café,’ Fedie expresses. Little Gossip Café’s support has been multifaceted, encompassing both fundraising efforts and emotional backing throughout Joseph’s battle with cancer.

What’s more, in September, Fedie plans to embark on the 22km Two Peaks trail at the heart of Queensland’s Scenic Rim. For Fedie, this is not just a physical challenge but a deeply personal journey. ‘My brother and I went hiking a week before his diagnosis, so climbing these peaks reminds me of that experience together,’ he shares with Echo News. This connection to their shared love of hiking adds a layer of emotion—and an opportunity for healing—to the endeavour, transforming it into a tribute to Joseph’s memory.

While Fedie has tackled a few moderate hikes in Queensland before, this particular challenge represents a new frontier. It's no longer just about the climb, but about what it symbolises: resilience, remembrance, and Fedie’s relentless pursuit of brain cancer awareness.

Fedie’s goals extend far beyond the monetary target. ‘Definitely awareness and change,’ he shares, highlighting a critical gap in brain cancer research and funding. His initiative seeks to place this often-overlooked cause in the spotlight and drive both awareness and tangible progress in the fight against brain cancer.

Joseph El Tahan’s battle with brain cancer began with his diagnosis of Glioblastoma at the young age of 21. He passed away a year later, in August 2022. ‘The week before he was diagnosed, we went on his first hike up Mt. Maroon. He seemed perfectly fine,’ Fedie recalls, reflecting on the shock and rapid progression of the disease.

Despite undergoing two brain surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiation, and facing a grim prognosis, Joseph remained an inspiring figure. ‘He was a beautiful soul and easily the strongest person I've ever met,’ Fedie remembers. Joseph’s unwavering faith and strength left an indelible mark on all who witnessed his journey.

The applaudable funding and awareness raised through our community’s efforts to support brain cancer shines a beacon of hope for all affected by the cause. Through our support of one another, we have contributed to a brighter future for brain cancer research and anyone battling the illness.

For those whose heartstrings have been tugged by Fedie’s honourable plight, you still have time to donate using this link: https://mark-hughes-foundation.grassrootz.com/ mhf-twopeaksscenicrim-2024/fedie-el-tahan or scan the QR Code

New Street Library and Pantry on the Block

Echo News is delighted to announce the launch of Claire’s Cottage Street Library and Community Pantry at Ferny Hills.

Located at 29 Ferny Way, Ferny Hills, this initiative was born from the hard work and vision of the cottage’s NDIS participants and their Support Workers. Together, they transformed an old chook pen into a place where everyone— regardless of their abilities or circumstances—can seek help and comfort.

The Street Library offers a collection of books to those who may not have easy access to them. Claire’s Cottage invites any and all community members to participation in this book swap initiative and connect with each other through the joy of reading. Whether you are discovering the magic of stories or just seeking your next good read, the Street Library will welcome you.

Beneath it, of course, is the Community Pantry. Stocked with essential food items, the pantry is also a resource for those in need, providing sustenance and support during challenging times. The goal—to ensure nobody in our neighbourhood goes hungry. It‘s a simple yet powerful way to uplift our community, ensuring that everyone has access to basic necessities.

Claire’s Cottage, a small, family enterprise, was initially a social program enabling adults with disabilities to engage in activities they chose. Today, it has grown into a robust day program operating throughout the week, focusing on developing life skills often overlooked in larger programs.

As an NDIS-approved service provider, it now offers many services, including in-home support and short-term respite.

The program focuses on helping their participants assimilate into the community and be seen as valued members of society. They aim to develop independent living and social skills, encourage individual interests, and promote positive experiences.

Through tasking their NDIS participants with the challenge of creating the Community Pantry and Street Library, Claire’s Cottage has made true all three of these aims.

To sustain the cottage’s efforts, Julie invites you all to donate books and non-perishable food items to the Street Library and Community Pantry whenever possible. Additionally, spreading the word locally will help ensure that those in need can benefit from these resources. For any inquiries, you can contact Julie at 0409 045 805.

Together, we can make a difference. Thank you for your support in helping Claire’s Cottage continue to serve our community with unwavering compassion.

A Fitness-Focussed Resolution That’s Worth Keeping

Compassion in Action

In an inspiring move towards fostering inclusivity among students, Prince of Peace Lutheran College has recently installed a Buddy Bench on its Junior Campus, thanks to the initiative of a compassionate Year 6 student, Clara.

sometimes. In the New Year, an ‘all or nothing’ approach to

focussed resolution just doesn’t last. So, incorporating a plan that is realistic and

Focusing on daily choices that are achievable and simple will create changes that don’t just last until March when your effort and energy has run out, but are long lasting. Here are 12 real-world ways that can help you achieve your health goals in 2024.

1. Eat protein for breakfast to keep your insulin levels steady and appetite satisfied.

2. Eat slow, chew your food.

3. Eat healthy meals. You will not lose weight by skipping two meals a day. Your body needs quality adequate calories from carbohydrates, proteins and fats.

Clara, observing that some of the younger students were sometimes left without playmates during break times, decided to take action. This inspiring young student started researching solutions and discovered the concept of the Buddy Bench—a simple yet effective tool to promote inclusivity and friendship among students. She learned that Buddy Benches have been successfully implemented in schools around the world, providing a designated spot where children can sit if they are feeling lonely, signaling to others that they would like someone to play with.

4. Include exercise snacks in your day. Maybe one minute of steps, squats or wall pushups whenever possible. This keeps your energy levels boosted whilst burning calories.

5. Learn about how food affects your body, so you can burn fat more efficiently.

6. Strength training is your secret weapon. Muscle preserves age, keeps you toned and takes up less space than fat.

Taking her idea further, Clara wrote a detailed proposal and presented it to the President of the Arana Leagues Club. Her passion and dedication impressed the club, which generously donated the funds necessary to purchase and install the Buddy Bench at the school. ‘We thank the Arana Leagues Club for their generosity,’ said a school representative.

7. Schedule exercise sessions for 20 or 30 minutes - you don’t need hours in the gym. Check in with yourself, show up and prepare the night before.

8. Plan for bad days. You can still succeed by doing what you need to do most of the time.

To ensure the bench’s successful integration, students were surveyed about the best location for it, and Year 6 students shared information about its purpose and use during a school assembly. Clara and her peers are committed to continuing their efforts by educating students about inclusivity and encouraging the use of the Buddy Bench.

9. Find your fit. You have everything you need inside of you to get you where you need to go.

10. Enjoy the journey. Make it part of your new lifestyle and enjoy what you do.

11. Sleep should be your priority. Getting adequate sleep reduces the amount of food people eat during the day and your food choices are wiser.

Statistics support the effectiveness of such initiatives. Schools that have implemented Buddy Benches have reported a noticeable increase in positive social interactions among students. According to a study by the University of Portsmouth, schools with Buddy Benches saw a 20% reduction in playground loneliness and a 15% increase in inclusive play activities.

The addition of the Buddy Bench at Prince of Peace Lutheran College is a testament to the impact that one student’s empathy and initiative can have on an entire school community. Clara’s efforts have created a more inclusive environment, ensuring that no student feels left out during playtimes.

12. Getting adequate water is amazing for weight loss as a natural appetite suppressant and helps remove waste from your body.

A healthy resolution doesn’t need to focus on weight loss. Create a wellness resolution/goal to live a healthy, happier life on any day you decide to start.

Give local Fitness & Nutrition coach Kim a call on 0407 919 143 to help you achieve your New You in 2024.

For parents and schools interested in installing a Buddy Bench, Clara’s initiative serves as a powerful example. Conversations with teachers and school administrators can be the first step towards bringing this beneficial feature to more schools, fostering a culture of kindness and inclusivity.

With 50 years of riding the rails under his belt, there’s few with as much knowledge and experience driving locomotives as Queensland Rail’s Peter Ca’ttell.

Mr Ca’ttell, who joined the organisation on 20 November 1973, is one of 45 Queensland Rail employees with more than 50 years of service.

The Ferny Grove resident currently works as a Locomotive Driver Class II, SEQ Operations at Mayne Yard and is qualified to operate everything from diesel freight locomotives to city trains to the iconic Tilt Trains.

However, he originally started as an engine cleaner, and as part of his role he drove the call car to notify traincrew of their next shift.

‘Things were a bit different back then. All you needed was a Grade 6 pass, a medical, and a maths test to meet the employment requirements,’ Mr Ca’ttell said.

‘I would drive the call car to Brisbane, Caboolture and Ipswich to inform the drivers, firemen and guards of their next shift.

‘The shifts were rostered manually, so if the shifts roster was completed at 2pm on the previous day and the crews finished work at or before 2pm they wouldn’t know what their next shift was.’

Mr Ca’ttell held a number of positions over his five decades of employment including as a fireman, driver, tutor driver, training instructor and train management improvement officer.

‘One of my favourite roles was when I was travelling across Queensland teaching drivers, guards, control clerks, and station team safe working practices and radio communication, as well as basic electrical and track safety to contractors,’ he said.

‘In fact, the University of Melbourne specifically requested me as the trainer for track and trackside safety for their students.’

‘I’m still a bit of a mentor to the younger ones coming through. They’ll often call me up and ask me how to fix this or do that.

I really enjoy being able to share my experience with them.’

Working at Queensland Rail is a bit of a family affair, with Mr Ca’ttell’s daughter Sarah joining as a guard in 2019.

‘I am proud that she’s joined Queensland Rail. She has always wanted to work here and was very excited when she got the role.

‘I also have to thank my wife for my career. We have been married 50 years this December and she’s very dear to me.

‘If it hadn’t been for the love and support of my family then my career in Queensland Rail could’ve been very different.’

Queensland Rail CEO Kat Stapleton recently met with Mr Ca’ttell to recognise his achievement at a 50 years of service celebration.

Mr Ca’ttell isn’t ready to retire yet but enjoys spending time with his grandchildren, creating things from timber and gardening.

Get Set to GO Green!

Get ready for Moreton Bay City’s new garden organics (GO) service, launching in December. Did you know that 23% of items currently placed in general waste bins are garden organics? Eligible households will soon receive a 240-litre lime green-lidded GO bin for easy at-home recycling. So if your home has a land area between 300 to 2,000 square metres you will receive a new 240-litre GO bin. Residential properties with a land size smaller than 300 or larger than 2,000 square metres will be able to opt in to the service from 1 March 2025.

Email: info@nwfs.com.au

Website: www.nwfs.com.au

By using this bin for garden waste like grass clippings, branches, and leaves, you can help divert 15,000 tonnes of waste from landfill each year. This initiative reduces greenhouse gas emissions, supporting our goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2039. New bins will be delivered to eligible properties between September and November 2024. Thriving Garden Brings Joy and Fresh Produce

The garden is looking absolutely amazing at the moment. The weather has been lovely and cool (but not too cold) and with the little bit of rain in early July the plants are thriving. The vegetables are flourishing. The snowpeas are producing well and the rocket, womboks and lettuce are great to put in salads. The silverbeet, shallots and cabbages are being shared amongst our members and beetroot will be picked soon. Furthermore, memebers are pulling up some delicious carrots and although small are lovely and crunchy. The young lemon tree has produced a few lemons for the first time and members look forward to what next year will bring. Over in the herb garden, the basil is flowering attracting bees, plus society garlic, thyme, mother of herbs and parsley are flourishing. All these herbs are great to put in soups and casseroles during the winter months.

HOG members are all enjoying the beautiful weather at this time of the year and continue to have a good roll-up on a Sunday afternoon. Not only do they enjoy the gardening aspect of the Community Garden but the social interaction is an added bonus. In addition, at the end of the working day, HOG members always seem to go home with a basket full of goodies. The HOG community is a friendly group who offer people in the Hills District the opportunity to grow vegetables using organic principles. Age is no barrier so feel free to pop along one Sunday afternoon to have a chat and a look around the beautiful garden.

As we head into winter and the days get shorter, members will now meet on a Sunday afternoon from 2pm - 4pm. You will find the Garden at 416 Bunya Road, Bunya next to the Off Leash Dog Park. Membership Fees per year are $20 for adults, $30 for family and $10 for Juniors. Visit www.hog.org.au, search The Hills Organic Garden on Facebook or phone 0415 856 532 for information. We look forward to meeting you.

The next meeting of the Ferny Grove Garden Club will be on Friday, 30th August, at 1pm. The club meets in St Matthew’s Church Hall, Church Road, Mitchelton.

An officer from the National Fire Ant Eradication Program will deliver the monthly talk. This program is a crucial initiative aimed at finding, containing, and destroying fire ants in South East Queensland, Australia. It will be very helpful for gardeners to be aware of the fire ant problem.

Learn About Bonsai

An update from the Mitchelton & Districts Garden Club

At our July meeting, members were treated to an insightful talk on bonsai by renowned expert David Calder, with assistance from his wife, Jane.

David, who has decades of experience in bonsai cultivation, began his talk by exploring the history and philosophy behind bonsai. He explained how this Japanese art form, which dates back over a thousand years, is not just about miniaturizing trees but also about capturing the essence of nature and creating a living piece of art.

This presentation was filled with beautiful images of bonsai trees in various stages of growth, demonstrating the meticulous care and patience required to maintain them. It also delved into the practical aspects of bonsai cultivation. David covered the basics, such as selecting the right species of tree, the importance of soil composition, and the nuances of watering and fertilizing.

Attendees learned about the different styles of bonsai and the different techniques and levels of care they require. David’s explanations were clear and engaging, making the complex art of bonsai accessible to both novices and experienced gardeners.

The meeting concluded with a Q&A session, where members asked a variety of questions, from pest control to seasonal care tips. David’s expertise and enthusiasm left a lasting impression on the attendees, many of whom expressed a renewed interest in starting or expanding their own bonsai collections.

Our next meeting at The Enoggera Memorial Hall (entrance via Trundle St) will be on Thursday 1 August at 9:30am for a 10:00am start. Entry is $5.00 and morning tea is provided. Visitors are most welcome. Feel free to contact us via email at mitcheltongc@gmail.com or find us on Facebook @ mitcheltongardenclub.

Friendship Through Gardening

An update from the Stafford Garden Club

In August, it is still not too late to remove the carrot-like bindii weeds from the lawn before they seed and produce painful burrs in Summer. The fewer seeds they set the fewer bindii you will have next winter. Summer flowering shrubs such as allamanda, abelia plumbago, crepe myrtle, acalypha and duranta, can be cut back now, unless you are in a frost prone area. Leave pruning of Spring flowering shrubs until after Spring. Prune swollen gall wasp stems from your citrus. Throw the cuttings in the bin so the wasps don’t hatch out. Fertilize citrus, passion fruit, native plants and emerging bulbs. Then water well.

Our speaker for August is Darryl Ruprecht author of “King of the Ferns: The Australian Staghorn Fern Experience”. He will describe the techniques and processes to propagate and cultivate this magnificent plant.

We meet at the OES Hall cnr Kitchener Rd and Bohland St, Kedron. The next meeting will be on the 15th August at 9.30am for Morning Tea, to buy from the plant stall and to admire the exhibits on the bench. Visitors and new members are very welcome. Rising Stars Shine Bright As Skills Take Flight

The Arana Netball Club has been making significant strides in developing its non-competitive program over the past few years.

In 2024, the club boasts six non-competitive teams, featuring enthusiastic players aged 7 to 10. These young netballers gather weekly for training sessions, honing their skills and playing games on Saturday mornings at the Downey Park Netball Association.

Comprising eager beginners, these teams showcase their growing coordination, motor skills, and teamwork on the court. The club’s supportive environment fosters personal growth and camaraderie, with each player making remarkable progress throughout the season.

In addition to their regular program, Arana Netball Club hosts a free summer clinic, an annual event that runs for six weeks starting Monday, October 14th. This clinic, organised by the Arana Netball Committee and its dedicated coaches, offers new players a fantastic opportunity to experience netball ahead of the 2025 season. Acknowledging the financial challenges faced by many families, the club ensures this clinic remains free, promoting accessible sports participation for all young children in the community.

Details on the summer clinic, including registration information, will be shared on the Arana Netball Club’s social media platforms in the coming weeks. Registration opens in early August, and due to the clinic's popularity, participant numbers will be capped.

For more information, follow Arana Netball Club on social media or visit the website www.arananetballclub.com.au and stay tuned for updates on the upcoming clinic.

It’s not easy under Albanese!

Anthony Albanese promised life would be easier under his government. But in just two years:

• Food is up 11.4%

• Housing up 14.0%

• Rents up 14.2%

• Electricity up 21.5%

• Gas up 22.2%

• Health up 11.1%

• Education up 10.9%

Under a Coalition Government I lead; we’ll get our country ‘Back on Track.’

Vietnam Veterans’ Day

On 18 August 2024, we observe Vietnam Veterans’ Day, remembering almost 60,000 Australians who served in the conflict between 1962 and 1972. Our community includes many local veterans, and we should be incredibly proud of their service to our country.

We pay tribute to the 523 Australians who died in the line of duty and the more than 3,000 who were wounded. We also honour the veterans still with us: those who continue to live with the challenges and traumas of their service, and those who, to this day, play a crucial role in supporting Australia’s ex-service community.

THE FERNY REPORT

Cost of living measures start now!

The remainder of the Miles Government’s record cost of living measures announced in this year’s budget are being rolled out this month.

Starting July 1 all households and small businesses have already, or will in their next electricity bill, receive the oneoff support of $1,000 for all households; $1,372 Seniors, pensioners, and concession card holders; and $650 small businesses. On top of this the federal government is providing a further $300 spread out throughout the year.

All rego bills sent out from 5 August will, for the next 12 months, attract a 20% discount. This covers all cars, utes, motorcycles and trailers.

Also, on 5 August all Translink public transport services will only be 50 cents per journey for a six-month trail – no matter where you live, or how far you travel. Fifty new busses have also been brought online in Brisbane to meet the expected demand. We are also subsidising the cost of Airtrain tickets by almost half.

Free Kindy and Free TAFE are proving to be incredibly popular, as have the $200 FairPlay vouchers for kids sport. At the time of writing over 214,000 have now been dispensed. These record cost-of-living measures are only possible because the Miles Government is making multi-national resource companies pay their fair share.

Ferny Grove Upper Kedron Residents Association (FGUKRA) petition

The FGUKRA is asking residents to sign their parliamentary petition which calls on the Brisbane City Council to amend the Ferny Grove-Upper Kedron Neighbourhood Plan to more accurately reflect the resident’s desire for a southern connecting road between Upper Kedron and Mount Nebo Road. At present, the Neighbourhood Plan states that the road is only for emergency vehicles, buses, cyclists and pedestrians. Residents will not be able to drive on this future road unless the Neighbourhood Plan is changed. It is important to note that the State Government cannot create a full-service road and can only consider approving it if Council choses to apply for it first. To sign the petition, use the QR code in this article.

Recently I had the great pleasure of inspecting the progress on the replacement Amenities Block at Ferny Hills State School. The old Amenities block was past its effective use by date, so I am sure parents, students and staff will be pleased with the new one when it opens later this year.

Monthly Meet-Ups with Expert Guest Speakers

Brisbane North Retirees Inc. meets every third Friday of the month at the Geebung RSL Club, 323 Newman Road, Geebung.

The meetings start at 9:30 am in the Newman Room. Additionally, the Finance and Investment Discussion Group meets on the second Friday of each month at the same venue.

The upcoming guest speaker for August is Kate Redman, an Associate with Kilmartin Knyvett Lawyers. She will present on Wills, Powers of Attorney, and Estate Planning. These events offer retirees and their families an entertaining and informative look at various topics, along with an opportunity to socialize over tea or coffee.

Everton News

from your State Member for Everton TIM MANDER

Making Our Community Safer Plan

The LNP has announced, if elected, their ‘Adult Crime, Adult Time’ policy will restore consequences for actions with youth offenders to receive the same sentences as adults committing the same crimes. This is not only about keeping dangerous criminals off our streets, but also about sending a strong message to deter youth from committing crime.

The LNP has committed $175 million to our new ‘Staying on Track’ Program to deliver an intensive 12-month rehabilitation program to support kids reintegrating into communities. This will stop the detention system becoming a merry-go-round for the growing cohort of serious repeat youth offenders in Queensland. This plan will include 12 months of supervision and support, including education, skills training and community connection for every youth offender leaving detention.

The LNP will put victims of crime first by rewriting sentencing principles and they will receive automatic updates relating to their cases. If the LNP forms government, they will increase the number of police on the beat, through retention and better resourcing.

School Leaders Visit Parliament

Over the past few months, I had the pleasure of showing student leaders from our local schools around Parliament on a personal tour. This is a fantastic tradition we have amongst our school communities, and as always, it’s a great day out. It's always a pleasure to chat with the students about their ambitions and concerns and it's refreshing to hear the younger generation's perspective on today's issues.
