Record Rate Rise Is Just Around The Corner With Budget Day looming on the 17th June, Moreton Bay Councillors have concluded budget briefings and Council staff are now putting the final measures in place for delivery of the budget for the 2022/2023 financial year.

A stand out topic, on the agenda is the forecasted significant rate rise which will no doubt add to the burden of the skyrocketing cost of living residents are currently enduring. However, against the background of a difficult global market with record inflation, this foreseeable rate rise comes as now surprise. Mayor Peter Flannery would like to emphasis that during these difficult economic times, projects and services will not be cut and with a need to keep pace with our growing region, infrastructure and investment will not be compromised. ‘I can’t pre-empt the final decision of Council before June 17 but we’re expecting the costs of goods and materials for Council to increase by about 14% this financial year, which is almost two and half times CPI,’ Mayor Peter Flannery said. ‘Every household knows the impact of skyrocketing fuel costs right now, which is significant for our vehicles, road crews, and mowing. Then there’s asphalt, cement, labour costs, and construction materials to continue our maintenance and construction programs,’ It was agreed by Councillors that now is not the time to slow down investment, with infrastructure desperately needing to keep pace with the growing region. In addition, after extensive feedback from residents, about potholes and unmowed grass, Councillors have asked for increased maintenance to improve people’s lifestyles.

www.echo-news.com.au

Furthermore, as a result of the data collected from the recent Moreton Says community survey Councils works program will be repriortised. 94% of people listed parks and playgrounds as ‘extremely important’, so Council will be looking to invest more in these and also activate them more with events and festivals. In addition, 90% support for stronger environmental protections. 49% of survey respondents saying congestion is the number one concern for them daily proving a need to invest in major road improvements. The Fig Tree’s Keeper

Eloquently creeping up the side of an industrial shed in Stafford, you would be mistaken for thinking that this bonsai-like Fig Tree was a mural, and not in fact a real life Fig Tree. So how did this atypical Fig Tree come about? Well, its all thanks to its keeper Adrian, a Samsonvale local, and owner of Integrated Mixed Martial Arts (IMMA) that is located in the laneway where the tree sits. Around eight years ago, Adrian discovered a seedling growing between the cracks against the shed that sits adjacent to his gym. A dabbler in the art of bonsai himself, he asked his neighbours if they would allow him to grow the tree and maintain it. You may have thought his neighbours would have had previsions about the extensive roots this tree may grow, nevertheless, they said yes! Over the years, Adrian, regularly tended to his beloved fig tree to “bring himself some zen” whilst practicing his hardcore fighting at IMMA, after all you don‘t become a five time MMA National and International Champion without putting in the training! A bit of Ying and Yang for your day… Maintenance included (and still includes!) trimming back the tree Adrian - the Fig every few months and tacking Tree’s Keeper branches to the wall as well as

www.echo-news.com.au

The magnificent manicured fig tree at Stafford screwing loose branches into place with metal to spread them out. This way, its only upwards and outwards from here! Adrian tells us that, at night, the fig tree looks especially impressive with the solar lights he entwined into the arms of his living masterpiece. Thanks to his TLC, the tree has flourished and now blends in beautifully with the urban jungle themed laneway in which the tree sits. The laneway is covered in murals of the Great Wall of China, cliff faces, etc, Adrian’s yoga studio, gym, mixed gym, laneway, and lovely seating area are all pieces of art themselves. If I were you, I’d suggest giving this culture hub a look-see! Check it out at 39 Hayward Street, Stafford!

Letter to the Editor

Local Swimmers Shine for Sick Kids

Thank You Tough Tradie! A perfect example of kindness in our community sent in from Brian (90yrs), Bridgeman Downs

Dear Editor, I thought your readers would be interested in reading about an unusual experience I had at Woolworths Albany Creek on Tuesday. I had been issued with a new debit card but the bank loaded the wrong PIN number on it. Therefore, I found that I could not pay at the checkout. Because I am legally blind, I was fumbling around trying to see how I could pay for my groceries. A big tough looking tradie came over and paid for my purchases on his phone. I thanked him and enquired how I could repay him. He just said it was ok, and he was happy to do this. He said he understood my confusion as his own father was 92. I am 90. What a wonderful gesture!’ Brian Whoever you are ‘tough-looking Tradie’, thank you for looking after one of our elderly citizens A TIP TO HELP OUR BEES!. BEES!...During the summer months there are fewer flowers, food sources and water for the bees. Furthermore, bees may drown as they try to drink from the pools when they do find water. To give our bees a helping hand, why not grate an Apple and add some water to the bowl? The bees will be able to get the sugars from the fruit and drink the water but not drown as they can stand on pieces of fruit. Our bee populations are threatened, let’s give them all the support we can!

Volunteers With Heart

LOCKED DOWN AND WRAPPED UP!

The Hills Players Inc. has called it a WRAP on their production LOCKDOWN.

Mia, Kelly and Avah Hawes

This month Arana Netball celebrated their many volunteers who contribute to the club and the community in so many wonderful ways.

Without the support, and many volunteered hours, from members, Arana Netball would not be able to operate at the capacity it does, nor provide the safe environment for players that they currently do. The club would like to recognise all of their coaches, managers, umpires, committee members and parents who support the little club. A special thanks goes out to the clubs amazing Hawes Family. The Hawes lead the way for Arana Netball starting with Kelly who is their incredible Publicity Officer. Kelly takes on many hats for the club including Manager, umpiring mentor and player! Her daughters, Avah and Mia both also play, coach and umpire for the club. Even Bowen – the ultimate netball brother – helps with coaching at summer clinic. Lastly, but certainly not least, Brad – the ultimate netball Dad, who supports his girls all season long! ‘Volunteers do not necessarily have the time, they just have the heart.’

New BMX Precinct on Track For a Bright Future

Construction is well underway for the new BMX precinct Although the inclement weather has slowed down construction, the new BMX Precinct at Nolan Park, Kenworth Place, Brendale is tracking along nicely. Upon completion, this $3.7 million project will be the new home for the Pine Rivers BMX Club, who are currently located at England Park, Brendale. Partly funded by Queensland Government’s Unite and Recover Community Stimulus Package, the project will not just have a national grade competition BMX track but, also a new clubhouse, lights for nighttime games, ample seating for spectators, and parking spaces for guests. With the new state-of-the-art BMX facilities on place, this new facility will meet the long term needs of the club and create the opportunity to host regional, state and national standard competitions creating further economic flow-on effects in the local economy. With the placement of top course material (that forms the track) almost complete, carparks in place and clubhouse constructed, it won’t be long before our local BMX’ers can enjoy the track. From Rough Rock to Dazzling Beauty

An update from the Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club The Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club has its clubrooms located at 46 Ferneydell Street, Ashgrove, and is open every Thursday from 9am to noon for sawing, cutting and polishing rocks and from noon to 3pm for silverwork. It is also open on Saturday from 1pm to 4pm. The Club caters for Gemstone enthusiasts in the North Western area of Brisbane. During the month of June, the Club will be holding a display in the Council Library at Arana Hills. Here in three glass cases, supplied by the Library, we will display work which we have carried out in our workshop at Ashgrove. This display covers the variety of lapidary work we do on Thursday mornings and Saturday afternoons. There is a large variety of work which you can do in the Lapidary field, such Cabbing, Faceting, Flat lapping, Wire wrapping of Cabochons and Free Forms. It is displays such as these where we can show the public what can be achieved from a rough rock to a finished item. If you have some gemstone material at home and did not know what to do with them bring them down to our Clubrooms on a Thursday morning and we will show you what you can achieve. Agates and Jasper type materials can be sliced into slabs and then marked to a set size by using a template. These templates align with the findings (which are blank jewellery pieces - they are called findings.) You can buy these at Lapidary suppliers. The stone is then trimmed to the marks which you have made around it with an aluminium pencil. You then go to the diamond grinder to shape the stone and polish it. Once this is done, it can be, then fitted to the finding, and you have your jewellery piece.

If you feel this type of hobby interests you, do not hesitate to get in touch with either John (0407 582 980)) or Lloyd (3351 2093) who will be only too happy to have a chat to you about the workings of the club. You can also visit us on our website – www.mitcheltondistrictsgemclub.wordpress.com or our Facebook page – Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club Inc.

According to the Australian Pain Management Association (APMA) 3.4 million Australians live with pain and this organisation has been established to offer peer support to community members. APMA is not a clinical organisation and does not recommend or endorse any treatment or provider. APMA is treatment agnostic. They support holistic treatments that allow community members to live a meaningful life in ways that are affordable and accessible. The organisation now offers two key services to help people impacted by Pain. Phone Helpline - Pain Link The Pain Link helpline offers a lifeline to individuals distressed by living with unrelieved pain and its impacts. Our volunteers clarify issues, assist with action planning, provide practical tips, refer to appropriate services and most importantly listen to your needs to ameliorate the impacts causing the greatest distress to you. The number is a call back service operating Monday to Friday. It can be reached on 1300 340 357. Pain Support Group - Miriam’s Mitchelton group The aim of the group is to offer peer support and provide a safe space to talk about pain experiences, removing barriers, and isolation to show people they are not alone. While friends, family and others can provide differing levels of support, the effects of chronic pain can be difficult to understand without lived experience; only those experiencing chronic pain can properly comprehend the stigma and daily ‘upkeep’ required to get through each day. Miriam identified a need in the community for a group session focused on persistent pain and improving quality of life. Given the location of the group, hope is that current or past members of the Australian Defence Force can access the meetings. The meetings will be held monthly at the Piccabeen Community Centre. Support Group Stepping Up for Parkinson's Sufferers

You don’t have to have been touched by Parkinsons disease to know what a cruel and debilitating illness it can be. Targeting the central nervous system, this disorder affects a person‘s movement and often includes tremors, slowness of movement, rigidity, and a loss of balance.

Needless to say, living or caring for someone with this condition can be challenging to say the least. Luckily help is on hand in the form of the Mitchelton Support Group of Parkinson‘s Queensland Inc.(MSGPQ) Coordinator of the group, David Martin, knows first hand how tough life can be like living with Parkinsons and wants to get the word out that support is available. ‘My wife was diagnosed some 22 years ago with PD, although in retrospect it was obvious she had the illness for some time prior to her diagnosis. At that time we were both gobsmacked as neither of us had heard of PD before. Around that time we saw an advertisement in a local paper asking for people interested in starting a Support Group for PD at Mitchelton and we were attendees at the inaugural meeting. I have been the co-ordinator of this Group now for over 20 years. ‘Originally we had around 30 participants, however many of these have now passed away. I believe it is important for anyone in the community to be aware that help and information is available to them as they deal with this non-fatal but debilitating progressive neurological condition,’ said David. Members at the Mitchelton Support Group can share their personal journey, find comfort, support and advice based

on their own experiences. The group has found this can be especially helpful in the first few months of an illness or disability, as the reality of the situation begins to set in. This is when people tend to feel alone, overwhelmed, and may not know where to turn for information. The Mitchelton Support Group meets at the Gaythorne RSL Club on the first Tuesday of each month, with the exception of December and January. The meetings are from 10am until 12pm and are very informal. Everyone is welcome - people with PD, carers, partners, family members - anyone with an interest or connection with PD, and there is no cost except for a gold coin donation which can be used to buy a small gift for guest speakers. After the meeting most of us remain and have lunch together in the club bistro, and continue talking. For more information contact David on 0418 750120

TAX MATTERS from local experts at Valor, 2 Glenlee St, Arana Hills

Are You A Sole Trader?

We have many clients in small business operating as sole traders. The issues we come across is that, often ,their bookkeeping is a complete mess. The main reason being that they aren’t operating a separate bank account for their business, so personal income and expenses are intermingled with their business income and expenses. We strongly recommend that you open a separate bank account for your business, and if you need money for yourself, take it in lump sums to reduce the number of transactions that need to be reconciled. As your business then grows, we also recommend that you start use accounting software like XERO for example, as this will make life so much easier for you and your accountant. It is important to get the base (and basics) right so, as you get busier, you have a solid platform upon which your business can grow. We are planning an information evening for those in business to help you understand your GST obligations and reporting, talk about some basic bookkeeping principles and also give an overview of what financial reports are telling you about your business. If you would like to attend the evening, please send an email to admin@valorabs.com.au expressing your interest in attending. Once numbers are finalized we will advise date, time and venue.

Meditation In Motion for Mind and Body

Tai Chi Internal Arts Queensland (TCIAQ) holds regular classes at Enoggera Memorial Hall, 349 Wardell Street, Enoggera Qld 4051, catering for beginners and experienced Tai Chi practitioners. Classes are also held at Gatton, Maryborough and Esk. The organisation focuses on internal Tai Chi, which is a lowimpact mind-body practice. Tai Chi is different from other exercises because it focuses on coordinated extension of joints and body turning rather than stretching. If you can walk, you can do Tai Chi so it is suitable for all age groups. In Tai Chi practice, practitioners learn to focus on the movements so mind chattering slowly dissipates, leading to a state of mindfulness. Hence it is like a meditation in motion. Instructors Hank Coppus and Steve Thrush agree that their inspiration for teaching Tai Chi comes from the knowledge that it is the perfect exercise to achieve optimum health, particularly for older people because of the gentle meditative movements. The benefits of Tai Chi include improved flexibility and balance, decreased stress and increased energy. Qigong (Chi Kong) is an important part of the internal arts practice in TCIAQ. Qigong is also known as life force cultivation because it combines breath and simple movements to circulate Qi (chi) energy in the body. Qigong can harmonise, strengthen and have a healing effect on the functioning of all the internal organs and bodily systems. Qigong can be practised anywhere because it requires only two square metres space and is the perfect companion exercise for Tai Chi. Apart from Tai Chi and Qigong, TCIAQ provides a beautiful internal art known as Lok Hup Ba Fa (LHBF). LHBF is a soft flowing, dance-like internal art which is impressive to watch. TCIAQ will hold a two-day Lok Hup Ba Fa International Workshop on 18th and 19th June for members as well as non-members. Information about workshops can be found at https://taichiinternalarts.com/workshops/. Tai Chi Internal Arts is a not for profit, non-religious, volunteer community association. It has low overheads because the instructors and committee are all volunteers. The yearly membership cost is $150 per year which averages to approximately $3 a week. This is payable yearly and entitles members to attend all classes in any location. More information can be found on https://taichiinternalarts.com

Edible Exchange Arrives in Eatons Hill

By Katie Irwin, Eatons Hill

Over the last few years of COVID lockdowns and isolation, we have seen a swing towards growing your own food. Being able to share nutritious home grown produce with your neighbours when the shelves are bare, is a tremendous joy and privilege. As growing food also grows in popularity, so too have edible exchanges, crop swaps, seed libraries, street libraries and skill share hubs. The more we have been forced apart, the more desperate we have become to be reunited - to experience true community, camaraderie and friendship. The Dayboro Edible Exchange has been successfully operating for over eight years, run by legendary local Corinne Parnell. Recently the Dayboro Edible Exchange secured a grant for a new premises and their old exchange was looking for a home! A perfect spot was chosen at Camp Mountain about four weeks ago and Anna Fawcus has become the driving force behind the wildly successful, Samford Edible Exchange. Recently, Melissa from Albany Creek, asked on the local community Facebook Page if anyone would be interested in something similar closer to home. Being the host of an existing community compost hub and street library which has been operating for over a year, I was very encouraged by the renewed local interest. Previously I had tried to establish an Edible Exchange but struggled to get the community involved and it never thrived. With fresh hearts and hands, we decided to re-boot what has been known as ‘Chicken Lane’ amongst neighbours. If we desired a well functioning edible exchange as a community, ‘Chicken Lane’ really needed rain and possum proofing fast! All of our signage and street library was sadly destroyed in the February rain events, so we needed a fresh overhaul. We currently have locals constructing a roof and adding possum proof doors to our existing exchange table, a fridge has been donated to use as a weather proof street library, clear signs are being designed and a greenhouse has been donated to use as a temporary critter proof exchange. Eatons Hill Edible Exchange will be a place where locals can swap homegrown produce such as fruit, vegetables, eggs, cow poo, horse poo, compost, glass jars, egg cartons, seeds, books and herbs. Produce can be shared in a variety of way such as fresh cuttings, seeds, dried, seedlings or plants. Participants may exchange fresh produce in return for other fresh produce, cooked foods, seeds, skills or even recipes. Eatons Hill Edible Exchange also has a Street Library and a Compost Hub. Whilst we are not 100% operational yet, we would love you to join the journey and get involved! Beautiful produce is currently being swapped and we anticipate opening at full capacity by the start of June. To get involved please join our Facebook Group here https://www.facebook.com/ groups/871694333602432/ or scan the QR code here

A Fun Way To Avoid Loneliness In Retirement

Arana Hills District Probus Club is being formed and invites men and women in their retirement and semi-retirement years to join. A free morning tea and interest meeting is being held on 16th June at 10am at the club’s future meeting venue, Arana Leagues Club (247 Dawson Pde, Keperra).

The new club will meet on the 3rd Thursday of each month, it’s main goals will be to generate fellowship, friendship and fun for its members. Meeting monthly for morning tea, members will be entertained by interesting guest speakers and a range of outings, trips and special interest opportunities. Like other Probus clubs across Australia and the world, this new club will be all about encouraging healthy minds and bodies and socializing with other retirees in the community. The purpose of a Probus club is to provide regular gatherings for semi-retired and retired people in local communities that appreciate and value opportunities to meet with others with similar interests, making new friends, discovering new interests are just some of the advantages. Established in this country more than 45 years ago, Probus is a social club for retirees with over 115,000 members in Australia and New Zealand in 1,500 individual clubs. Although there are over 20 clubs in the Brisbane’s near north and western suburbs, a number of clubs have membership waiting lists so the decision was made to form a new club for the benefit of local residents. Formation of the new club is being sponsored by the Mitchelton

www.echo-news.com.au

Rotary Club, which has previously been responsible for the establishment of another local Probus club. A working committee made up of Rotary and Probus members. Barbara Tobin, Rotarian and also Regional Liaison Officer for Probus said, ‘Getting out regularly with new friends is of great benefit to all ages. Whether you choose to do something active like walking, or something less strenuous like playing cards, the fact you’re mixing with likeminded people can increase your zest for life.’. Probus and Rotary member Merv Richens said “For many retirees, joining a club and forming new friendships provides unexpected benefits such as learning new skills, socialising and visiting new places.” ‘In a world where families don’t always live in the same region and where quality time with loved ones can be less regular than ever before, social groups are providing a way of ensuring that older people continue to have regular contact with people of similar age and interests,’ said Merv Membership of a social group can prolong a healthy, happy life by keeping the brain stimulated, the body active, and keeping us from insulating ourselves at home, alone. Joining a social club has been shown to have so many benefits to members that Generation Xers are being encouraged to have their parents join groups. Samford Bowls Club receives Flood Relief Funding

Despite the Dampness, Cake Decorators Unite! An update from the Brisbane North Cake Decorators Association

Phil Walmsley, CommBank Area Manager, with Chris Campbell and Barry Maher from Samford District Bowls Club and Bryan Hadden, CommBank Arana Hills Branch Manager

Samford District Bowls Club has been announced as a recipient of the CommBank Flood Relief Fund. The much-needed funding of $10,000 will support their repair efforts and restoration of their Club facilities.

Chris Campbell and Barry Maher from the Samford District Bowls Club visited CommBank Arana Hills Branch last week and detailed how the February flood waters inundated the Clubhouse destroying all floor coverings and significantly damaging the bowling greens. The CommBank Flood Relief Fund provides $2 million to support customers and local community organisations as they rebuild. Bryan Hadden, CommBank Arana Hills Branch Manager, says the bank focused on directing this funding to community organisations as quickly as possible to help with their recovery efforts. ‘Flood-impacted community organisations have been able to access up to $10,000 in CommBank grant funding to assist them with clean-up, rebuild and recovery and we are now focused on getting this money to them as quickly as possible,’ said Mr Hadden. Further information about CommBank’s Flood Relief work can be found at the website: www.commbank.com.au/floodrelief To access further business support, please phone CommBank on 13 19 98 any time, chat to us in your CommBank app or visit us in branch where it is safe to do so. Maria with her wafer paper Moth Orchid

We held our meeting in May a week earlier due to the Federal Election and we had a great roll-up, even though the rain was still making a nuisance of itself.

Cake Decorating and rain just do not mix but Maria produced a very realistic Moth Orchid out of wafer paper as our demonstration after the business meeting. Our State organisation, the Qld Cake Decorators Association is planning a Cake Show in September at Upper Coomera so we are busy planning a wedding cake for the display. It will be great to have the show after the last two years of having to cancel. The upcoming June meeting will be a workshop on bas relief, a technique of building up two-dimensional pictures with different icing. We decided a workshop would be more interactive than just watching a demonstration, so Robyn will be guiding us through the process. The group meets on the 3rd Saturday of the month at the Arana Hills Community Hall on Dawson Parade commencing at 1pm. We are a branch of the Queensland Cake Decorators Association and aim to foster and improve the art of cake decorating and sugar craft by providing the opportunity for an exchange of ideas and skills. Check our Facebook page by searching Brisbane North Cake Decorators Association QCDA or email brisbanenorthcakedecorators@gmail.com for more information. New members are always welcome.

The Urban Renewal of Everton Park Inspires Sophisticated New Community

The latest project by acclaimed property developer Rogerscorp, Fable, Everton Park, will further accelerate the transformation of the suburb which is set to rival the CBD as Brisbane’s next lifestyle hub. Bringing a new level of luxurious, connected living to the heart of Everton Park, Fable includes a boutique collection of 57 premium town and terrace homes that surround a central park, offering resort style amenities that focus on selfcare and wellbeing. Developed by Rogerscorp, the masterplan for Fable is the result of a complete redesign from the site’s original concept as a mixed use, multi-tower residential apartment and commercial precinct. Fuelled by urban renewal, the new downsized plans align with the DNA of Everton Park which is being transformed into an amenity-rich neighbourhood. Following the success of the developer’s recent projects in Everton Park, which includes the Everton Park Health and Early Learning Centre, Fable is the sixth project being delivered by Rogerscorp in north-west Brisbane. Rogerscorp Director Simon Rogers said Fable takes the group’s vision for creating quality developments to the next level with finely-crafted town and terrace homes and community spaces designed for owner occupiers. ‘Our collaboration with Z Architects and Laud Ink for Fable has truly brought our reimagined vision to life,’ said Mr Rogers. ‘We drew inspiration from the urban, vibrant Everton Park community while adding sophisticated design elements throughout every space. The end result is a connected community with considered facilities for every lifestyle. ‘Everton Park is one of the suburbs in north-west Brisbane that has changed rapidly in recent years thanks to a variety of new amenity and ‘city lifestyle’ offerings. Our new plans for Fable meet the evolving needs of the surrounding neighbourhood and ensures families have modern living options within the community that suit their lifestyle. ‘Since our first residential project in Everton Park we have continued to grow and innovate while still maintaining our Page 22 - June 2022, The Hills Echo

proudly family-owned, boutique feel. Our nimble approach to property development allows us to quickly adapt to the demands and needs of the local market, which is exactly what we’ve been able to do with Fable.’ Appointed Project Sales Agency Position Property Director Richard Lawrence said Fable offers a level of premium living and resort-style amenity that local owner occupiers are looking for. ‘With the accelerated pace of Brisbane’s property market, buyers are seeking value-for-money and lifestyle in their choice of home – and Fable delivers all of this and more only 8km from the CBD,’ said Mr Lawrence. ‘Everton Park offers buyers the opportunity to live in an increasingly sought after urban neighbourhood with access to exceptional retail, dining and entertainment typically only found in inner city suburbs, so it’s no surprise that Rogerscorp is creating this new residential vision to align to the lifestyle on offer. ‘I anticipate that, much like previous Rogerscorp projects, residences at Fable will be very popular among owner occupiers, particularly growing families, first home buyers, downsizers and interstate migrators.’ Fable offers a diverse range of 57, 3-bedroom town and terrace homes with a choice of warm or light sophisticated interiors and premium features throughout, including stunning free standing bath tub and waterfall shower, seamless indooroutdoor living areas, flowing coastal oak flooring and generous floorplan designs. At the central heart of the community is Fable’s resort-style pool, pocket park, outdoor kitchen and dining and yoga lawn. Adding to the homely suburb feel of the community, residents can also enjoy exclusive use of the outdoor pizza ovens and built-in firepit for gatherings with friends and family. Town and terrace homes at Fable range from 186sqm to 216sqm. To learn more or enquire now visit www. fableevertonpark.com.au. www.echo-news.com.au

The Priority Report Issue #40, Winter 2022

Hills Property Market Update Since our last Priority Report in March, a lot has happened in the property market. Changes in COVID restrictions, major flooding events, a rise in interest rates and a change in Federal Government are all having an impact. In the Hills District, we continue to see steady sales price growth supported in part by a reduced amount of stock available in the market and continued strong demand from buyers. We could see price growth remain strong despite increasing interest rates if Labour's Help to Buy Scheme encourages more first home buyers to the market.

If you would like to explore the option of selling or renting your home, give our friendly team a call on 07 3164 7000, and we can arrange a free appraisal, so you know where you stand.

Top Tips for Tackling Mould In the Home The relentless rain in recent months has found many households fighting a battle with mould. Unfortunately, there is no quick fix and getting rid of mould in your home takes time and elbow grease.

In the Rental Market, rents continue to rise while the vacancy rate for rentals in Brisbane sits at a record low of 0.7%. House rents continue to increase faster than units, at roughly twice the pace. This is the result of factors such as young families relocating from interstate as well as those who have been displaced from their homes due to the devastating floods.

During these times of change, it is vital to seek the advice of an experienced agent that knows the local market and is on top of market trends if you are thinking of selling or becoming a landlord.

We have put together the following tips to help you treat mould in your home and prevent it from coming back: Fix any leaks or external entry points for moisture Ventilation is key - open windows and put on fans. If you can't ventilate, consider a dehumidifier or running your air conditioner on the dehumidify setting Mould needs organic matter – such as dust – to thrive, so it's important to keep up with regular vacuuming and dusting Use a solution of 80% vinegar and 20% water to clean off mould If large areas of mould regrowth occur, consult a mould remediation professional. Seranata Sings for National Seniors

On Tuesday 17 May, the Serenata Singers were invited to sing for the National Seniors at Arana Leagues Club. Being their first concert of the year, they were a little nervous, but after a warm-up and introduction from President John McCollow, they sang as if no one was listening, and still got very positive feedback from the audience. Thankfully, the group are getting back into the swing of audience performances with three concerts in June and more planned later in the year. This shortened concert featured Leonard Cohen’s ‘Hallelujah’ and an Irving Berlin selection including ‘There’s No Business Like Show Business’, followed by ‘Sounds of Silence’, ‘The Banana Boat Song’, and tunes from ‘Fiddler on the Roof”. After a tough couple of years, which saw the choir cancelling most performances, they are looking to bounce back strongly in 2022. The choir, which sings a variety of popular, traditional, spiritual and show tunes, has entered 2022 with exciting plans and high expectations. The choir is looking forward to the future and expects to build in 2022 stronger than ever. If you can hold a tune and are interested in joining them, you will be made very welcome. They meet on Monday’s at 7pm at The Gap Uniting Church Hall, 1050 Waterworks Road. For more information, visit https://serenatasingers. org.au/ or email serenatasingersthegap@ gmail.com.

Rana Jewell Stretch Therapy Teacher Beneath the Surface Do you sit all day? Most of us do, in our daily life, even at night. We are designed to move…and rest. I discovered Stretch Therapy many years ago, while performing as a Dancer in a Burlesque Cabaret. This is where I met a 70+ fellow performer who could do the full splits. When I asked Jim about this, he said that he started stretch therapy because in his late 40’s he could no longer sit on the floor cross legged. If you aren’t flexible, as an adult, can that change? For my friend, Jim, it changed dramatically. Not everyone will want to aim for the full splits. What if you simply want to easily get back up off the floor without reaching for a chair or the wall? Or you want to run around more effortlessly with you or your friend’s children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, etc? In Jim’s words stretch therapy is a supported practice

‘to increase suppleness, tone your muscles and relax your body.’ In my own experience, as well as improving my flexibility as I age (now in my 60’s), the wonderful side effects of stretch therapy have been less niggly pains in my hips and lower back as well as noticing that it stills my busy mind, allowing me to relax, unwind and sleep better on more nights. Since meeting Jim, I enjoyed my classes so much that in October 2019 I did my stretch therapy teacher training with Kit Laughlin and Olivia Allnut in Greenwell Point, NSW. This is a CALL out. Would you like to sample stretch therapy? If yes, please contact me to register your interest now, as I will be teaching more classes this coming September.

Getting Support When You Need It

Inviting a Support Professional into your home can be a daunting process so here are our tips to ensure you get a great match.

Where to start Start by registering with the government service called My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 or www.myagedcare.gov.au. It provides access to the aged care system in Australia including in-home support. They will arrange for a health professional to discuss your current health, medical history and lifestyle to learn about what you may require. You will also complete an income assessment so the government knows how much, if anything, you can afford to contribute towards the cost of your care. Planning ahead Once you know the level of funding you have available and your home care package is in place, we suggest you begin making a list of the things you are looking for in a home care provider. This may relate to the type of Support Professional you would like, their availability or the range of services you would like. Finding in-home care Ways to find in-home care include referrals from friends, family and health care professionals as well as recommendations from people who work with in-home support providers. Just Better Care Australia People & Culture Advisor, Kristle Van Biljon, says there are many advantages to working with a provider, not least of which includes ensuring the quality of their employees. A quality provider will ensure they foster inclusiveness, promote diversity and embrace the unique skills

and qualities of all employees and customers. Next steps When you’ve drawn up a shortlist, it’s important to meet before committing to any one provider. Important questions to ask • How long has the provider been in business • Are they insured and licensed? • What services are provided, and can they work to your schedule? • What are the costs and how are the payments handled? • What is the cancellation policy? You can also request details about what internal processes the provider undergoes to match staff to customers. This will give you some insight into how seriously they take their duty of care and offer you peace of mind when it comes to any specific preferences you may have. Kristle says Just Better Care meets the industry quality standards for both aged care and disability services. In addition, employees are trained to treat customers with respect and dignity, while ensuring their privacy and confidentiality is never compromised. She says all staff undergo a comprehensive screening, quality and training process – including police checks, NDIS Worker Screening Check and various other state-based checks prior to being employed. Brookside Walkers Celebrate Milestone

The Heart Foundation’s first and biggest shopping centre walking group recently celebrated dual milestones during a specially organised event held at Brookside Shopping Centre.

After turning 30 last year, the Brookside Walking Group gathered to recognise their 25 year partnership with Heart Foundation Walking. The group was one of the first of its kind nationwide when it began in 1991 and was the Heart Foundation’s first shopping centre walking group when they partnered in 1996. It is now grown to be the Heart Foundation’s largest in the country with over 180 registered members. Heart Foundation Queensland State Manager Sheree Hughes said their now national walking program began in Queensland and Brookside Walking Group has always led the charge with enthusiasm. ‘The Heart Foundation’s walking program now operates under a national model, with generous funding from the Australian Government, Health and Wellbeing Queensland, and Brisbane City Council. This support means that over 200,000 walkers nation wide can enjoy the Heart Foundation Walking Program in their communities for free.’ Hughes also said that walking within a shopping centre makes a lot of sense as it provides a safe and secure environment that allows their walkers to exercise rain, hail or shine. Brookside Marketing Manager Christian Polglase said the group was an important member of its community and epitomises what is great about shopping centre environments. ‘In practical terms, we provide them with a roof to keep the rain off and a clean, flat surface to walk on, but in reality, the Centre acts as a common meeting place where they can regularly connect with friends whilst looking after themselves,’ said Mr Polglase. A number of individual walkers were recognised during the event including eight long-term members who have participated in over 2000 walks, including foundation member Marie Wessel. The Brookside Walking Group meet each Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 6.45am, near the Customer Service Desk. To find a group in your area visit https://walking.heartfoundation.org.au/

History

Samford’s Sensational History An update from the Samford Museum

Queensland Day is celebrated on June 6th.

Queen Victoria signed the Letters Patent, approving Queensland becoming a separate colony to New South Wales, with its own Representative Government on 6th June 1859. The greater Samford area had been settled as a sheep station from 1851. Then from 1855 as a cattle run, the homestead being established where Samford Community Hub is today. Pioneering families settled into the area after the pastoral lands were thrown open for closer settlement by the Queensland Crown Lands Alienation Act 1868. Most were Homestead Cleared land in 1924. In the distance can be seen todays 961 Eatons Crossing Road Selections which meant the Photo from State Lib Qld -Picture Queensland occupier must live on the land and improvements eg clearing the virgin land and establishing crops and fencing had to be made. Inspections were carried out. These early families were keen to provide their children with an education hence the construction of a slab walled, shingle roofed Provisional School by locals. This was in 1872. As decades passed the farming of bananas, pineapples, various other fruit as well as vegetables, and dairying has changed to a sort-after rural residential locality. The school, which became a State School in 1878, has grown dramatically and this year celebrates its 150 years of education on September 10. Samford Schools’ Head Teachers residence has become home to Samford RSL in Main Street. Samford Museum opened in 1986 in the relocated Head Teachers’ house from Albany Creek School. Since then, members who are all volunteers, are proud of the collection of Samford’s history we have collected, displayed and made available to visitors such as school groups. Greater Samford is a tiny area of Queensland with a rich history. References- Samford Museum’s research collection Those with an interest in the many aspects of and maintaining the Museum complex and greeting visitors are welcome to contact President Geoff for further information or visit 10am - 4pm Sundays and Wednesdays. Rags to Hitches - A PLEA FOR HELP! News and Views from a Tramway Muse

It would be fair to say that the Ferny Grove Mens and Women’s Sheds are well endowed with large and expensive machinery. However, with so many active souls, there’s always a shortage of ‘everyday consumables’ such as soft rags, nuts, bolts and screws (hitches), drill bits, paint brushes and storage boxes (preferably strong and stackable). The sheds are also well endowed with good spirits, but liquid spirits are always thin on the ground. Things like methylated spirits (“Metho”), turps, cutting fluids, thinners. And materials are always in short supply; decent timber (silky oak, maple, cedar etc.), steel sections and sheet, brass, copper

We also need spray oils (WD40 etc.), spray paint of all types, sanding sheets, paint stripper, metal polish, and anything remotely useful. If you think you may be able to help, the Museum would love to hear from you. We’ll collect of course, though you can drop anything off on Tuesday or Friday mornings. Innovative Road Surface At Core Of Anti-Hooning Trial

Council and police are working together to stamp out hooning, with a trial underway of an innovative road surface that shreds tyres during burn-outs.

A calcite bauxite treatment has been laid down at two intersections at Forgan Road, Joyner and at Bult Drive, Brendale. The trial will determine if it stopped hooning, but also find out if the surface caused noise impacts and how well it held up under the weight of daily traffic. It is noted that the surface will not damage tyres under normal conditions, such as when people drive according to the road rules and conditions. The trial will monitor the surface for up to nine months, with council then determining whether to roll it out at other hooning hotspots, identified from residents’ complaints. Mayor Peter Flannery said the trial will ultimately be measured in terms of success in reducing hooning. ‘We’re working with residents and businesses and so far we haven’t had any more reports of hooning in the locations with the new road surface,’ said Mayor Flannery ‘This is expected to be an ongoing program from council that covers larger areas where there is hooning - so people can’t just move to the next intersection and do their burn-outs there instead.’ Council also has mobile camera units that we can install around the region in known hooning hotspots, and we can share footage with police. Bult Drive, in Brendale’s industrial area, was chosen for the

The ‘Anti-Hooning’ calcite bauxite treatment at Brendale trial to measure how the surface would hold up under heavy vehicle use, while the intersections along Forgan Road were identified as a result of residents’ complaints to Cr Cath Tonks (Div 9). ‘On Forgan Road, residents have been reporting regular instances of a lot of hooning noise, speeding vehicles, with tyre marks and rubber being left behind at the intersections,’ said Cr Tonks. ‘Many Brendale business owners also got in touch with me as they were also impacted by the damage and rubbish left behind by the hooning activity.’ To make a report phone the Hoonline on 131 666 or lodge it online at www.qld.gov.au/law/crime-and-police/registeror-report-to-police KEDRON ARTS GROUP PRESENTS

Create A Cosy Home Sustainably This Winter

After a long wet summer, winter has arrived in South East Queensland. Across the region, people are digging out their doonas and warm socks. The long chilly evenings are the perfect time to some quality time at home with a podcast and a cozy craft.

Roz Fenson, CEO of The Nest Community, says even in a temperate climate, winter evokes images of hot chocolate (or a full bodied red) by a warm fire. ‘Winter makes me think of hygge, the Danish concept of a cozy lifestyle, curling up on the couch with soft cushions and blankets and having a long chat with your partner or a good friend,’ Ms Fenson said. The Nest Community in Everton Park is a hub of hygge potential, with a wall of yarn waiting to be knitted, crocheted or felted into scarves, blankets and cardigans this winter. This year the Swedish lifestyle concept lagom has become popular too. Lagom is about living with just enough for a comfortable life, embracing sustainability and moderation. ‘If you take hygge and lagom to the extreme they don’t seem compatible, but there’s actually a beautiful middle ground where you can create a lovely Workshop volunteers can teach you a multitude cozy homemade lifestyle in a sustainable way and inexpensive way,’ Ms of skills at the Nest Community Fenson said. ‘At The Nest Community, our haberdashery thrift shop is full of donated materials including balls of yarn, meters of fabric, embroidery and sewing threads, buttons, and even sewing machines. ‘Our fabulous haberdashery volunteers or workshop teachers are a wealth of knowledge about craft techniques and can help you choose the best options for your project.’ The Nest Community is a volunteer based organisation that aims to connect generations through sharing skills. In addition to the haberdashery thrift shop, The Nest runs regular classes for sewing, embroidery, quilting, knitting and crochet, along with occasional basket making and hand dyeing workshops. ‘Starting a new craft can be expensive, but at The Nest Community you can get a few balls of yarn and some knitting needles or a crochet hook for less than the cost of a coffee and you’re on your way to a beautiful handmade item for your hygge/lagom home,’ Ms Fenson said.

‘Our fabric is significantly cheaper than retail stores at only $4 a meter, so it makes it very inexpensive to get creative and try your hand at dressmaking or quilting.’ Visit The Nest Community at 720 South Pine Road Everton Park Monday to Saturday or see the upcoming workshops at www.thenestcommunity.org.au

This rebate brings the total to $575 that the Queensland Government has been able to return to Queenslander’s hip pockets because the Palaszczuk Government chose to keep our electricity assets in public hands.

of the new $10 million buildings being constructed on site. At over fifty years of age, Mitchie Special School was badly in need of an upgrade. The new facilities will include specialty classrooms, new amenities, and a new admin block. Storylines Art Bursary Are you looking to further your skills as an artist? Progress on our Roads

An update from the Ferny Grove & Upper Kedron Residents Association

Road access and safety in our growing catchment remains a priority for residents. This month we provide updates on two road-related matters. Road bend safety - Upper Kedron Road We recently made enquiries of Brisbane City Council regarding safety at the bends on Upper Kedron Road at the Baptist Church. A transport network officer investigated the zone and concluded that the 60km/h speed limit remains appropriate and the line markings provide adequate guidance during the day and night. They did however acknowledge that the road signs could be larger in size and better located. Upgrades to the signs should occur in June/July. Council will also arrange an assessment of the skid resistance of the road surface. Rosella Street bridge and Minnie Street Works on the Rosella Street bridge commenced in May 2022 under Development Application A005564638. The bridge will connect Hasties Avenue with Rosella Street, crossing a steep section of the creek onto a roundabout where it intersects with Honeyeater Street and Parksedge Road. This is a major piece of infrastructure being funded by the developers of Ellendale. The works outlined in the lengthy development application include minor widening of Minnie Street at its bend, improvements to the intersection at McAlroy Road and Upper Kedron Road and completing the resurfacing of Levitt Road through to Canvey Road. Our Association continues to advocate for a bus route along Minnie Street to expand public transport services to a wider part of the community. We have also encouraged the State and Local government to discuss options to straighten rather than just widen Minnie Street. FGUKRA researches and advocates for residents to all levels of government on local issues. To join for a once only $10 fee, please contact us at fguk.communications@gmail.com www.echo-news.com.au

Everton News

Tim Mander MP

from your State Member for Everton TIM MANDER

At the last election, I committed $100m (under a LNP government) to fund the intersection upgrade of South Pine Road and Stafford Road in Everton Park. The Labor government failed to match that. Despite the detailed plans to improve this intersection being completed 10 years ago, the State Labor Government stubbornly refuses to fund this much-needed upgrade. The benefits of Stage 1 of this upgrade, the Everton Park Link Road, won’t be fully realised until stage 2 is complete (direct upgrade of the intersection). This bottleneck causes enormous congestion and I have continued to apply pressure to the Minister for Transport and Main Roads, Mark Bailey, to fix this road for the convenience and safety of motorists. Once again, I have urged the Minister to fund this project. The upcoming budget is an ideal opportunity. ROAD SURFACE FALLING APART Old Northern Road is a major arterial road for North-West traffic flow in and out of Brisbane. It is imperative the road condition is maintained to a high standard.

www.echo-news.com.au

Tim Mander MP with Steve Minnikin MP, Shadow Minister for Transport and Main Roads In recent times, the section from Rode Road to the Jinker Track has deteriorated badly. The road is starting to fall apart with lots of patchwork required. I have written to the Minister for Traffic and Main Roads, Mark Bailey, requesting for this road to be reconditioned and resurfaced as a priority. This must be addressed for the safety of motorists. With the upcoming budget, I have asked the Minister to allocate these much-needed funds. I will keep putting the pressure on until these issues are resolved. Gardening

A Very Soggy But Successful HOG

An update from the Hills Organic Community Garden Wow! What a lot of rain we have had over the last few weeks. Maybe a little too much for our young seedlings. Hopefully they will all survive and thrive.

Our Rosellas have reached their peak and are now on the wane but we have made lots of Rosella Jam which our members have enjoyed. We are still enjoying the Napoli Squash which seems to keep producing endlessly. However, the rats have found quite a few of them and eaten the centres out of the squash. The cockatoos have also discovered our passionfruit and seem to be enjoying them. I guess it’s nice to share our produce with the local wildlife. Planting has begun in earnest with Beetroot, Snow Peas, Pak Choy, Spinach, Lettuce, Beans and Silverbeet being planted. The soil is still warm so the plants should be able to establish a good root system before the colder weather arrives. At the moment our herb garden has flowering basil which is attracting the bees, society garlic (which has beautiful lavender flowers which are edible), thyme, tarragon, mother of herbs and garlic chives. Our peanuts are also showing promise and hopefully the recent rain will not spoil them. The HOG community is a friendly group who offer people in the Hills District the opportunity to grow vegetables using organic principles. Age is no barrier - so feel free to come along one Sunday afternoon to have a chat and a look around our beautiful garden. Our members meet on a Sunday afternoon from 2.30pm to 4.30pm. As well, they attend to the garden through the week to water and do general maintenance. You will find us at 416 Bunya Road, Bunya, next to the Off Leash Dog Park. Membership Fees per year are $15 for adults, $25 for family and $5 for Juniors. Visit hog.org.au, search ‘The Hills Organic Garden’ on Facebook or phone 0407 582 980 for information.

A Country Garden Visit

The Ferny Grove Garden Club meets on the last Friday of each month at St Matthew’s Church Hall, Church Road, Mitchelton at 1 pm. In June it is proposed to visit a local garden and arrangements will be finalised nearer 27 June. For more information please contact Elizabeth, 07 3851 0568. Page 40 - June 2022, The Hills Echo

Easy-Care Cordylines

An update from the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club

Provided there are no Covid restrictions, the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club will meet on Thursday, 7th July, at the Enoggera Memorial Hall (Entrance to the hall is at 36 Trundle Street, Enoggera).

The guest speaker is Kate Stumer who will talk about Cordylines, an upright easy- care shrub that grows with its leaves coming from a central stem. There‘s a huge variety, each one with particular colours, and there are even Australian native Cordylines. At the May meeting Geoff Robinson dealt with natives that were drought resistant. He explained the properties of the saltbush. There are different ones, all with edible foliage to add flavour to food. One of the club’s senior members with allergies to garden sprays, was happy to share the result of an experiment. Insect damage was preventing her from using foliage for the show bench. In desperation she sprayed her Acalapha with Mortein, and it worked. She was able to show a cut of a foliage plant, free of holes or chewed edges. Another member encourages birds to visit her yard - magpies, crows, kookaburras, butcher birds, myna birds, etc. - and they eat the caterpillars and grasshoppers, minimising damage to her foliage plants. This month (June) there‘s lots to do in the garden. The last crop of winter vegetables - carrots, cauliflowers, broccoli, celery, garlic, onions, peas and beans - may be planted. Formative pruning of young fruit trees will help develop a strong framework of branches. Those growing japonica camellias who want quality blooms, should remove some of the plump buds by gently twisting them off to leave a couple in each cluster. This will let the plant provide more nutrition for the buds that are left. Herbaceous perennials may be lifted and divided this month. Bare root rose plants are becoming available. Don‘t delay planting these. However, westerly winds could burn the new shoots, and some gardeners prefer to wait until later in the season to buy new rose plants. This club meets on the first Thursday of the calendar month except January. Meetings commence after morning tea which is served at 9.45 a.m. Visitors and new members are welcome. The hall is close to public transport and accessible by wheelchair. For more information, please phone the president, Pat, on 3356 1256.

Sandwich Generation – Mums Juggling Children & Nanas This article is brought to you by Social Worker, Elena Bishop. Elena is the director of Supportive Therapy and Social Work in Arana Hills. She has a wealth of knowledge and insight into the industry. Yes that’s right, there is a term for everything. The ‘Sandwich Generation’ are those people who are supporting children with elderly parents. The Australian Institute of Health & Welfare recorded one in four new mums is aged over 35, including 5% who give birth over 40. Additionally, adult children living at home longer due to the rising cost of living. Plus, we’re living longer: it has been estimated that our 3.8 million 60-somethings have a life expectancy of 20-plus years. Not to mention the current situation with Covid can make nursing homes an unsafe environment for some people and therefore not an option, so nana… come on in! You guessed it, what a tasty sandwich; three generations under the same roof. Do you know what would make this sandwich more interesting? The complexities of blended families, multiple sets of aged parents and additional stepchildren. This is essentially the multi-generation revival; multi-gen living. This is the reality for so many people, trying to juggle

the logistics of everyone in the same home, timetables, the division of expenses and responsibilities, and if you have young children and elderly parents, you are essentially always ‘on the clock.’ For many cultures around the world this is considered ‘normal’ for their households. But, if this is not the case with you and your previous experiences of what a family unit looks like. It can be very overwhelming and chaotic. Not to mention the pressures of keeping peace and harmony in the home, making sure everyone’s needs are met, how the financial complications are negotiated as well as domestic responsibilities. This additional financial and emotional load can be intensified when things are not going smoothly. When things are great, they are wonderful and we are all so grateful to have this close family unit together with unconditional support. If things are not going how we expected, it can make you want to move out of your own home. For the grandparent, they may sell their home and assets to come and move in with their adult child who has agreed to look after them. This then leaves them in a vulnerable situation when things do not work out as they plan; significant conflicts or a divorce, the grandparents can then be left with no where to go and no money. So, if we feel this is our only option, how can be best safeguard everyone for worst case scenarios? The difficult thing here is that when things are going fabulous it may seem unnecessary and uncomfortable to put concrete contingency plans in place. But when all is happy and well, this is actually the best time! Large strategies such as hiring a lawyer to draw up power of attorneys, legal family arrangement, budgets, individual and shared bank accounts. Medium strategies can be investigating temporary respite care when needed a break, outsourcing cleaners to literally take the load off, babysitters for children so you can have some time out, even connecting with a counsellor to discuss strategies on conflict resolution, self-regulation, or emotional intelligence. Smaller strategies are shared timetables with a calendar or app & colour coded everyone’s schedules, whiteboard outlines everyone’s responsibilities, meal planning so we are organised and strict with groceries, plus boundaries like dedicated ‘family time’ and ‘individual time’. Family cooperation and engagement can help things running smooth. Being honest and feeling safe to express our concerns, as well as clear strategies that all parties can implement. These safeguards can help the household continue to run while ensuring resources, emotions and patience are not too thinly stretched.

Do you know that if you text 0477 13 11 14 between 6pm - midnight when you are in need of support, a trained Lifeline crisis support worker will text with you? So if you are feeling overwhelmed or having difficulty coping, please drop them a text. They listen without judgement and provide a safe space to discuss your needs, worries or concerns. They will also work with you to explore options for support. www.echo-news.com.au
