Expansion Set for All Abilities Park
Exciting news for our region has been released! Our local Hills District All Abilities Park, is set for an exciting expansion and Echo News has the exclusive!
Opened in December 2019, The Hills District All Abilities Park has become a beloved feature of Leslie Patrick Park in Arana Hills. The playground is renowned for its inclusive design, featuring a sensory garden, Braille installations, accessible carousel, adaptive disability swings, and vibrant 'honey bee' artwork, making it a perfect spot for community BBQs and outdoor play for children of all abilities.
In a recent episode of our new podcast ‘Talk of the Town by Echo News’, hosts Steve and Von learnt about the exciting plans for the park's expansion from their interview with Councillor Matt Constance. It is revealed that Stage two of the park's development is already in the works. While detailed plans are set to be released later this year, initial concepts indicate that the playground will be widened and enhanced with additional features, including a rope Braille trail designed to provide more fun and accessibility for visually impaired children.
Moreton Bay City Council is currently actively consulting with specialised groups to refine these plans. ‘Staff have started to engage with Vision Australia and a few other groups to get some feedback on these initial concepts, so it is something we are all very excited about,’ said Matt Constance.
Stay tuned to Echo News for further updates on this exciting development, as we continue to celebrate and support our community's commitment to inclusivity and fun for children of all abilities.

Backing a local business has never been easier with Moreton Money
City of Moreton Bay, in partnership with local business groups, is calling for the community to support local businesses by choosing a Moreton Money gift card for their next gift. With the recent introduction of digital gift cards, purchasing and using these cards has never been easier.
Mayor Peter Flannery said the cards can now be used like a normal EFTPOS card, making it easier for the community to spend their money how they want, and where they want.
‘Moreton Money gift cards now directly download to the mobile digital wallet, meaning supporting a local business is just a tap of the phone away,’ he said.
Moreton Money is an initiative that encourages the community to make the active choice to support their local businesses and consider changing their spending habits.
‘Small businesses, which are the backbone of the Moreton Bay economy, have been doing it tough in recent years with flood events, COVID-19 and skyrocketing costs across the board.
‘Instead of filling the pockets of huge corporations that are recording massive profits, I urge our community to think locally first. Purchasing a Moreton Money gift card makes a real difference to locals and the success of our small businesses.’
Moreton Money provides a wide variety of options for recipients to use their gift card in businesses and stores across Moreton Bay, spanning various industries and geographical
areas. There are hundreds of businesses already registered, and more coming online daily.
Back a local business and our whole community benefits with every $100 spent locally, generating around $180 of economic impact.
The Hills & Districts Chamber of Commerce Craig Shim believes Moreton Money is a game-changer for our community.
‘Moreton Money is all about making it easy to shop local and support local businesses, whether you’re treating yourself or giving a thoughtful gift, Moreton Money helps keep our money circulating right here in Moreton Bay, which is fantastic for everyone,’ Craig said.
‘Local spending is like fuel for our community’s economic engine, when we choose to shop at a local business, we’re not just making purchases, we’re investing in our neighbourhoods, supporting local jobs and keeping our communities unique and thriving.’
Moreton Money is part of Council’s Regional Economic Development Strategy (REDS), a blueprint for a bigger, bolder, and brighter economy which will ultimately create 100,000 new jobs in Moreton Bay through to 2041.
To purchase a Moreton Money Gift Card or to view the directory of registered businesses, visit moretonmoney.com
Moreton Money is brought to you by your local Chambers of Commerce, Food & Agribusiness Network and BPW Caboolture, supported by City of Moreton Bay.

Life on the ice for a local Navy meteorologist
People who think meteorologists in Australia are under pressure to get the forecast right should spare a thought for those working in frigid extremes with the Australian Antarctic Program.
One of those was Lieutenant Holly Boubouras, who grew up in McDowall and attended St Rita's College. Holly is now a Navy meteorologist from the Maritime Geospatial Warfare Unit, deployed to Casey Station during four months over summer. Beyond providing daily forecasts for the Australian stations, Casey, Mawson and Davis, the on-watch meteorologist also provides forecasting for field science projects, marine forecasts and operations support.
It’s a job made more complicated by what’s called the “A-factor”, or Antarctic Factor, according to Lieutenant Boubouras. Meteorologists must grapple with limited observation equipment and satellite coverage, along with strong winds and intermittent internet access.
The extent of tasks often means the station’s meteorologist office opens at 4am, with three forecasters on a watch-keeping roster and one supporting from Hobart.
For Lieutenant Boubouras, the extreme conditions of Antarctica make it the highpoint of a meteorologist’s career.
‘The absence of roads makes aviation operations crucial, where meteorologists play a key role in ensuring safe flights through monitoring a range of hazards and weather phenomena specific to Antarctica,’ she said.
Before reaching the continent, Lieutenant Boubouras
Holly with one of the modes of transport around the Antarctic region
underwent survival training, including sleeping overnight on the ice.
Lieutenant Boubouras also visited remote locations such as Robbo’s Hut, offering a glimpse into the challenging life of early Antarctic pioneers.
She had a summer swim in freezing waters surrounded by towering icebergs, and visited the penguin colony at Shirley Island.
‘For a more intimate encounter of the environment, inflatable rubber boat tours in Newcombe Bay unveil the mesmerising beauty of icebergs and surrounding islands,’ Lieutenant Boubouras said.

Local Park Wins Big at Architecture Awards
Bradbury Park, located on 468 Rode Road Kedron, has emerged as a beacon of architectural innovation, securing four prestigious awards at the recent Greater Brisbane Architecture Awards. This pioneering playscape, designed by Alcorn Middleton, was awarded the John Dalton Award for Building of the Year, the Greater Brisbane People’s Choice Award and two Commendations (for Public Architecture and Urban Design). Designed for the Brisbane City Council, the park is accessible for all but turns a particular spotlight on innovative play for teens (often overlooked in the design of public spaces). The design provides children with opportunities to challenge themselves via different modes of play — including a mix of high-level activity zones, quiet hide-away spaces and more social areas.

To mark this occasion, the museum invites all current and original members to join in a special morning tea event on August 1, 2024. The festivities will kick off at 9:30am for a 10am start, taking place on the museum grounds.
If you or any of your family members have been involved with the museum throughout the years, whether as early members or
through various attachments, you’re encouraged to participate in this celebration of community and history.
To RSVP or for more information, please contact the museum via email at info@samfordmuseum.com.au or by phone at 3289 2743.
Let’s come together to honor the past, celebrate the present, and look forward to the future of the Samford Museum.
The Drive In Days
AlbanyCreekRoad
Many of our longtime locals will have fond memories of the days when drive-in cinemas were the heart of community entertainment. Families and friends would gather under the open sky, tuning their car radios to the movie’s frequency, and enjoying a shared cinematic experience from the comfort of their vehicles. These nostalgic venues provided a unique blend of film, fun, and fellowship . Here is a little run down on two of the popular Drive In’s that were once more than just a place to watch movies—they were a cherished part of Brisbane’s cultural fabric.
The Aspley Starlight Drive In: This popular Drive-in was a cherished local icon, located on Albany Creek Road and was first opened on January 31, 1957. Its inaugural film on Field 1 was ‘Hit the Deck’ starring Debbie Reynolds. On August 31, 1989, a second screen was added, premiering with ‘Dead Calm’ and ‘Lethal Weapon 2.’ The drive-in’s final showings on February 23, 2002, featured ‘From Hell’ and ‘Shallow Hal.’
Keperra Drive In: The Keperra Drive in opened in 1966 and was located on the southwest corner of Samford Road and Settlement Road. It started with one screen, and a second screen was added around 1991, although it closed its doors in 1998 and was demolished (date unknown?),
While both the above drive-ins enjoyed immense popularity, the emergence of new multiplex cinemas in nearby shopping centres led to a decline in attendance at both locations. Moreover, these large plots of land became highly desirable to developers. Keperra Drive In is now known as the Kings Grove Housing Estate and the first developer to purchase the land at Aspley Drive In named the estate Aspley Keep.

This showcase is a celebration of resilience, innovation, and the unwavering spirit of extraordinary men who are leaving an indelible mark on the business landscape.
Join us in applauding these incredible men as we a celebrate their strength, tenacity, and the boundless potential.
Blaine Woods might not be a household name, but you will certainly recognize the outstanding health businesses he has co-created and co-owns, including TerryWhiteChemart (TWCM) Ferny Grove, Compounding Pharmacy in Keperra, and Upper Kedron TWCM. Blaine’s journey to this point has been one of dedication and perseverance.
After graduating from Otago University in Dunedin, New Zealand, Blaine moved to Australia in 1996 to take up a position as a Dispensary Manager in a large pharmacy in Townsville. In 1997, he moved to Cairns to manage a pharmacy under the new Chemmart brand. The success of this store caught the attention of Rod Garozzo and John Dunsdon, who were planning to open a store in Keperra, Brisbane. In December 2000, the three of them launched Keperra Chemmart at the Great Western Super Centre, which went on to become an award-winning store.
In 2007, Blaine expanded his ventures by adding two new pharmacies: Samford TWCM and TWCM Keperra Compounding. By 2012, Blaine transitioned to managing the compounding site, which holds a special place in his heart.
“Compounding can offer solutions to people who are struggling with traditional treatments. Seeing

Blaine Woods, BPharm MPS Pharmacist/Business Ownerthe difference this service has made in people’s lives is incredibly rewarding. We work with a range of doctors addressing pain, autoimmune conditions, hormonal problems, children’s health, as well as animal health,” said Blaine.
The past five years have brought significant changes, including the sale of the Samford and Great Western stores, and the opening of Ferny Grove TWCM and, more recently, Upper Kedron TWCM. Nevertheless, Blaine's commitment to quality care and innovation continues to make a positive impact on the community as he explains.
“Pharmacy has evolved from simply dispensing prescriptions to offering services like vaccinations and medication reviews. Medicine has also advanced with the availability of breakthrough treatments for many conditions and the introduction of plant-based prescription medicines. Staying current requires a dedication to lifelong learning, but what never changes is our commitment to treating everyone with care and respect,” explains Blaine.

From Farm Life To Pizza Life
Warwick Brown, Farmer Brown’s Pizzas and The Farm Shack
Farmer Brown’s Pizza and The Farm Shack has earnt its title as one of the regions most popular Pizza shops and mobile catering services, but who is behind it all? The answer is Warwick Brown, a man who spent his childhood living the farm life on the outskirts of Dayboro.
From chasing cows to getting chased by cows, to stacking motorbikes and learning how to gracefully fall off horses, Warwick sure made the most of it. The food especially. In the Brown household, meals were always fresh and jam- packed with flavour due to the numerous veggie patches and fruit trees on their doorstep.
However, once childhood was over and Warwick had gained experience in the military and a few years in the corporate world, decided to start his own business.
In December 2015 aged 24, he flew to Melbourne and bought a food truck, officially starting Farmer Brown's pizzas.
With Warwick’s dedication and young driven team, the business has thrived over the past 9 years, now consisting of 30 capable staff and the addition of 7 catering set-ups to the Farmer Browns fleet.
For the past 4 years, they have had a permanent brick and mortar pizza store in Ferny Hills- the Farm Shack.
Warwick and his pride-filled staff are renowned for their catering skills, their customer service, their personal interactions with patrons, and their ability to deliver multiple meals to all. The team usually caters for events such as birthday parties, engagement parties, special occasions and weddings. Give Warwick a visit at their flagship store The Farm Shack on 170 Patricks Road, Ferny Hills or call 0449 944 406

Calls to the Community to give Generously
The AranaVIEW Club is urging the local community to give generously to The Smith Family’s Winter Appeal this year, to support thousands of children and young people with their education.
By donating to the Winter Appeal, Australians can help young people most in need by giving them access to extra learning tools, so they can get the most out of their education and create better futures for themselves.
It comes as a survey released by the charity found the majority of Australians have seen child poverty worsen in the last 12 months, with more than four out of five people agreeing that extra support for education is key to helping children and young people experiencing disadvantage. VIEW (Voice, Interests and Education of Women) is a national women’s organisation and support network, bringing together women to enjoy social activities, develop skills, and make connections – all the while supporting Australian children experiencing disadvantage. VIEW is also the largest community sponsor of students on The Smith Family’s Learning for Life program, with Arana View Club supporting eighteen students through its fundraising activities.
You can make a difference to a child’s education by popping along to their meeting. The Arana View club meet on the first Wednesday of the month at the Arana Leagues Club, Dawson Parade, Grovely, meeting at 10.30am for an 11am start. A two course meal, tea and coffee are provided along with talks from guest speakers and entertainers.
For those who are interested to find out more about VIEW, contact Carol at 3355 5349

An update from the Mitchelton & Districts Garden Club
Many speakers who visit our Club stress the importance of wearing a mask when handling potting mix.
Life gets messy, busy, complicated and unpredictable sometimes. In the New Year, an ‘all or nothing’ approach to your New Year’s health focussed resolution just doesn’t last. So, incorporating a plan that is realistic and sustainable is of upmost importance.

It has been all hands on deck at the Hills Organic Garden Club with planting beginning in earnest. The weather at the moment is great, with enough rain to sustain new plants and the temperature has cooled down quite a lot. With the soil still being warm, this has provided ideal conditions to begin planting the 2024 crop. Beetroot, Pak Choy, Spinach, Lettuce, Carrots, Beans and Silverbeet have all been planted and with the warm soil, plants should be able to establish a good root system before the colder weather arrives. There are also a few sweet potatoes for members to take home and the pumpkins won't be too far away.
Quick empowering workouts to help you be the best you can be everyday for everybody.
The Rosella bushes are producing well and members have been making some very tasty rosella jam. Furthermore, the herb garden is truely blossoming with flowering basil which is attracting the bees, society garlic (which has beautiful lavender flowers which are edible), thyme, tarragon, mother of herbs and garlic chives.
Exercise is medicine and along with a manageable eating and lifestyle plan you will see the change and feel the difference. This is not Bootcamp but a sustainable way to live in your body and love your life.

We are often advised of the dangers posed due to the potential presence of harmful microorganisms, dust and chemicals in various potting mixes. As a helpful reminder to all greenthumbs, here are some specific risks to be mindful of:
Focusing on daily choices that are achievable and simple will create changes that don’t just last until March when your effort and energy has run out, but are long lasting. Here are 12 real-world ways that can help you achieve your health goals in 2024.
1. Eat protein for breakfast to keep your insulin levels steady and appetite satisfied.
2. Eat slow, chew your food.
1. Respiratory Irritation and Allergic Reactions: Potting mix often contains dust particles, fungal spores and other allergens that can irritate the respiratory system and lead to symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, throat irritation, difficulty breathing and skin rashes.
3. Eat healthy meals. You will not lose weight by skipping two meals a day. Your body needs quality adequate calories from carbohydrates, proteins and fats.
4. Include exercise snacks in your day. Maybe one minute of steps, squats or wall pushups whenever possible. This keeps your energy levels boosted whilst burning calories.
2. Microbial Infections:Potting mix can harbour harmful bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms, especially if it has been stored improperly. Inhaling these microorganisms can increase the risk of serious respiratory infections such as Aspergillosis and (more rarely) Legionnaires’ disease.
4. Chemical Exposure: Potting mix may contain fertilizers, pesticides, and other chemicals that can be harmful if inhaled. Continuous exposure can lead to symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, headaches, and in severe cases, organ damage.
5. Learn about how food affects your body, so you can burn fat more efficiently.
6. Strength training is your secret weapon. Muscle preserves age, keeps you toned and takes up less space than fat.
7. Schedule exercise sessions for 20 or 30 minutes - you don’t need hours in the gym. Check in with yourself, show up and prepare the night before.
5. Pregnancy Risks: Pregnant individuals should be especially cautious when handling potting mix, as some components may pose risks to fetal development if inhaled or absorbed through the skin.
8. Plan for bad days. You can still succeed by doing what you need to do most of the time.
9. Find your fit. You have everything you need inside of you to get you where you need to go.
10. Enjoy the journey. Make it part of your new lifestyle and enjoy what you do.
11. Sleep should be your priority. Getting adequate sleep reduces the amount of food people eat during the day and your food choices are wiser.
12. Getting adequate water is amazing for weight loss as a natural appetite suppressant and helps remove waste from your body.
A healthy resolution doesn’t need to focus on weight loss. Create a wellness resolution/goal to live a healthy, happier life on any day you decide to start.
To minimize these risks, wearing a mask rated for particulate matter (such as an N95) while handling potting mix is highly recommended. Additionally, working In June, our Club is holding an invitation-only event - Friendship Day. New visitors welcome on the first Thursday in July. You will find us at the Enoggera Memorial Hall from 9:30am. Entry is $5. Email mitcheltongc@ gmail.com for more details

THE FERNY REPORT
by Mark Furner M.P. State Member for Ferny Grove$1,300 cost of living support
We’re providing households with $1,300 cost of living support. You won’t need to apply for this as it will be automatically applied to your household electricity bill.
From July 1 you’ll get $1,000 up front thanks to the Miles Government, plus an extra $300 from the Albanese Government. Seniors, pensioners, and concession card holders will be eligible $1,672 and eligible small businesses will also benefit from a jointly funded $650 electricity rebate.
This is only possible because we’re making the multinational mining companies pay their fair share and because we kept our energy assets in public hands.
Queensland’s Skills Strategy
In the biggest skills and training reform in almost a decade, the Miles Government has announced it will fund one million training places for Queenslanders who want to train, upskill, reskill, and pursue careers in the state’s priority industries.
The Good Jobs, Great Training: Queensland Skills Strategy 2024 – 2028 means more free and subsidised training, so Queenslanders can benefit from good jobs.
The strategy builds on our Free TAFE program to bring down costs for Queenslanders to get into better paid jobs or start a career in high-demand industries – such as health, social services, hospitality, clean energy, and more.
Free Apprenticeships are also available for Queenslanders

Breaking Down Barriers To Volunteering
Where would we be without our volunteers?
from your State Member for Everton TIM MANDER
They are the backbone of many Queensland communities; however, the State of Volunteering in Queensland 2024 Report has revealed a decline in volunteering under the PalaszczukMiles Government.
Last week the LNP has announced we will hold a Parliamentary Inquiry into Breaking Down Barriers to Volunteering, if elected in October. Here in Everton, we celebrate our volunteers every year and would love to see more done to support them.
Volunteers are the heart and soul of our communities, and their contributions won't go overlooked or undervalued under an LNP government.
We will empower our volunteers and our community organisations to continue their vital work in our communities. Supporting volunteering is a priority for us because it’s a priority for Queenslanders.
Student Leaders at Parliament
Over the last few weeks, it has been my pleasure to welcome the Senior School leaders from Everton Park State High, Albany Creek State High, Mt Maria College, Northside Christian College, and Prince of Peace Lutheran College to Parliament House.
It is very encouraging to meet these bright individuals and hear their views on some of the current issues facing the youth of today.
Opening of Wantima Water Harvesting Project
In September last year Cr Cath Tonks and I had the honour of breaking ground on Wantima Country Club’s Eco-friendly Water Harvesting Project which can hold 46 mega litres and provides a beautiful natural environment for local wildlife, and earlier this month we were invited back to open the completed project. It looks amazing and is a great addition to the club.
