Flood Devastation at Mitchie Football Club

Our thoughts at The Hills Echo go out to all local residents and businesses that have been affected by the recent floods.

However, it was a delight to see the wonderful community spirit highlighted in recent weeks, with local residents rallying around to help one another with the clean up. One of the hardest hit community organisations was the Mitchelton Football Club. Their facilities have been devastated by the floods, with all of fields, sheds and clubhouses being inundated with water. Although they have had amazing people help them with the clean up, the rebuild will require vast resources. They have set up a Go Fund Me page at https:// gofund.me/0ec114a6 and any help is appreciated.

Mitchelton Football Club’s synthetic turf was installed just a few years ago and has been completely destroyed

Back To School Memories

Kids (and parents!) were rejoicing earlier last month with the start of the new school term FINALLY taking place.

To celebrate, Jasmine Molineux, a teacher at Patricks Road State School, has sent in this fabulous picture of cheeky duo, Hugh and Emma. You may remember this pair from our ‘Back to School’ inspired front cover back in February 2017. Check them out now, all grown up in Grade 6! Thank you for the picture Jasmine! If you have an image you would like to share, please email admin@echo-news. com.au we love sharing pictures from our community with the readers.

A Tribute to Melva A.Welch OAM 11/12/35 - 31/01/22 from Samford Museum

Melva A Welch OAM

Our local community of The Hills District and Samford Valley has lost an extraordinary lady who has given us a wealth of knowledge of our history. Melva Welch of Arana Hills sadly passed away on 31st January. During the past 30 years or so, local history enquirers visiting the Samford Museum, along with numerous other repositories of local and family history, have likely to have had their answers sourced from some of Melva’s extensive, and ever-growing collection of material she shared in the form of files and published books. Prior to focusing on researching and recording local history, Melva was the Chief Editor and Collator of the Hills Districts local paper the Adviser for 25 years. From Samford Museum’s earliest days Melva invited members to send an article for inclusion which helped us become known in a wider community. Melva kept her family life very separate from her research and

www.echo-news.com.au

recording life. She spent countless hours and days in public record offices, seeking out details she needed for whatever her project was at the time. This was well before the days of internet and websites that now include Trove newspapers, so you can only imagine how time-consuming it would have been! She was brilliant at compiling information, however, she was a humble and reluctant public speaker - even at the launches of several publications published by Pine Rivers Shire Council and her own self- published work. Even for her major work, ‘Bergin Beauty’ she did not hold a launch in 2014. Museum members knew it deserved much more recognition and hosted a book signing afternoon for her – still no speeches, just conversations. The fruits of Melva’s volunteer research, recording and compiling will continue giving long into the future. May Melva A Welch OAM rest in the knowledge that she will not be forgotten and her name will be spoken often.

Can you help Samford Museum?

If you are a retired tradesperson or retired person looking for something meaningful to do one day a week, the Samford Museum would LOVE to hear from you! They are a not-for-profit organisation relying on volunteers to keep the maintenance machine well oiled. Hitting Your Burnout? Here’s How to 180 That Issue

Burnout—the act of one reaching their all time low, ‘InBetween’ stage—a over and over again, every day. period used to turn It is a term that is no stranger to anyone who has worked in the healthcare industry for an extended period of time. Let alone an entire decade, like Kristy Anne, a local nurse, author, and behavioural scientist. In her fresh-to-press second book, 30 Day Self-Care Solution for Nurses, Kristy tackles how to reduce burnout and create healthier relationships. Because relationships often take a toll when a person is dealing with the throws of burnout. During her previous years of hospital shift work and parenting, with a lack of a support system holding her up, Kristy led herself into deep burnout territory. So far, she found herself discussing her existential crisis with a patient who was one boot through death’s door. Surely, stress and anxiety didn’t equal the ‘meaning of life’. Surely, she could reignite the spark within herself and leave her mental cage behind. Right? With a few mindset changes and a reopened heart to new possibilities, she nosedived into the worlds of therapy, meditation, and journaling, to name a few things she tried until Kristy was able to find the solution. Her spark. Every step, every known method, and every piece of advice she collected along the way is all documented by Kristy in the 30 Day Self-Care Solution. She reveals, ‘Writing played a massive part of my healing process… After seeing my colleagues and the state of healthcare recently I thought it best to put onto paper the practices I used that helped me to go from survival mode to start thriving in life again.’ One of such practices is what Kristy refers to as the

surviving into thriving and emotional pain into healing. Making use of this stage kickstarted Kristy’s self-healing j o u r n e y, a l l o w i n g her to discover what had really onset her burnout. ‘In order to get to the ‘Thriving’ stage of life, we just need Author of 30 Day Self-Care to go through the Solution, Kristy Anne often uncomfortable ‘InBetween’ phases, which is where we find healing’. Life is too short for us to be submerged in a sea of stress and an ocean of anxiety. It is, however, long enough to build the best, strongest versions of ourselves possible. This book will assist that process, rewiring our brains for 30 days until we can adopt the healthy habits it discusses. Or, as Kristy would say, until we can put on our own oxygen mask—as they do in aeroplane demonstrations—to endure what life throws at us. Kristy’s ultimate guide is available on Amazon via Kindle and Paperback, with the audiobook being recorded soon. Also, if you feel you could benefit from Kristy providing workshops in your business on managing and preventing workplace burnout, please feel free to reach out to her on Instagram or Facebook. Get Bowled Over at Enoggera's Hidden Oasis

Who would have thought, tucked away in the heart of Enoggera's industrial hub, lies a hidden oasis in the form of a modern bowls club?!

To date, the Enoggera Bowls Club has been a sporting hub only known to the locals within the area. It is nestled within the Pickering Place Complex behind the Enoggera Train station, and provides a unique bowling experience all within 15 minutes of Brisbane’s CBD. If you are looking for a lawn bowls club in Brisbane for pennant bowls, barefoot bowling or as an event venue, you can’t go past this place that provides the perfect mix of tradition and the new. Founded in 1939, the club once sat on the main street of Pickering Street - so not hard to miss! However, in 2018, to keep abreast with the times, the facility closed its doors and was completely rebuilt at its current location a few hundred metres from where it used to stand. The newly built Enoggera Bowls Club has been transformed to a state-of -the-art facility offering world class greens. Bowlers can also play rain, hail or shine, along with being protected from the harsh Queensland sun, thanks to a roofing system covering both greens. Night owls can also rejoice as the club boasts a high tech lighting system, allowing for bowls to be played morning and night. To keep bowlers hydrated and fed, Cafe 63 is attached to the club and offers a fully air conditioned place to enjoy the delicious food and drinks on offer. The committee are keen to increase membership as Club President Neil Walsh states, they are encouraging new players to come and get involved, even if they have never tried the sport before.

‘Unless someone comes down, sees us and has a go, they don’t know what it’s like; we have so much to offer here,’ said Neil. ‘The club is somewhat of a secret amongst locals, however we want this to change and are welcoming new members of all ages and abilities. The facilities are available to everyone within the local community and it has become a neighbourhood hub for families.’ Why not give the Club Pro Brad a call on 0477 443 255 for more details about Barefoot Bowls or the competitions on offer? You can find them at 72 Pickering Street, Enoggera, or visit their website at www.enoggerabowlsclub.com.au

Young Writers of The Future

In collaboration with the Young Writers Club at St. Williams Catholic Primary School, The Hills Echo is delighted to publish a monthly 'Student Reporter Column' called Young Reporters of The Future. This month, we have a group of girls who are very passionate about the environment and would like to share some strategies with the community. Here is Peggy M, Stephanie B, and Erin McD’s Open Letter to our readers. Enjoy..

To the Hills Community Residents,

We are writing this open letter to express our concern about the state of our environment. Our world is in danger and becoming more polluted. Climate change is already impacting us and how we live. Our planet is in desperate need for help. We wish to inform you of everyday routines you can change to make our world a better place for future generations. Here are a few tips for how you and your family can make a change: The first step is as easy as pie. Just ‘switch off when you step out!’ If you are leaving your bedroom to go to school, or any room in your house, turn off the lights and fans. This saves energy and money. If your room gets hot during the day, simply open the window. Fresh air is good for you! The reason we do this is so that we do not add to greenhouse gases and pollution. Another effortless way to help save our environment and stop pollution is to ‘turn scraps to soil.’ Composting is an easy yet effective way to help stop pollution. All you need to do is get an old ice cream container with a lid, or if you want to be fancy you can get a composting bin cheap from Bunnings. Whenever you eat delicious fruit or veggies, instead of throwing the scraps in the bin, compost them instead. You can also put coffee grinds and eggshells in the compost bin, just make sure you do not add meat. As well as composting another super, easy way to save our

Page 12 - March 2022, The Hills Echo

planet is knowing that ‘plastic packaging pollutes!’ This means not purchasing products that have an unnecessary amount of plastic packaging. However, if you cannot avoid it that is ok, just put the packaging in the recycling bin or take it to Coles or Woolworths for them to recycle. This helps because most of the plastics that would be going to landfill can be used to make useful things like park benches, bicycles, wheelchairs, and bridges for nature walks. One final suggestion is to ‘demand second-hand’. The making of clothes uses plastic and sends out dangerous chemicals in the process. Buying things second or third hand will reduce these problems if we all work together. Clothes are not the only option, even though they are the first things that come to mind. You can also get a variety of second-hand items online such as bikes, desks, chairs, shoes and even monkey bars. Second-hand items normally sell for much lower prices than when they were bought new. Do not worry these items are normally in good condition. Sometimes people just grow out of them. Help us make the world a better place for future generations by remembering these four fantastic tips – Switch off when you step out, Turn scraps to soil, Plastic packaging pollutes and Demand second-hand. Yours sincerely, Erin, Peggy and Stephanie

Laughter Yoga Comes to Pine Rivers Gallery Space with New Exhibition

Holocaust survivor, philosopher and author Hannah Arendt wrote of her friendship with author Mary McCarthy: “It’s not that we think so much alike; it’s that we do so much thinking business for and with each other”.

That quote inspired Australian artist collective Barbara Cleveland to create the latest exhibition to be hosted by Pine Rivers Art Gallery ‘Barbara Cleveland: Thinking Business’ in which the ensemble of performing artists explores intellectual and creative connection. It has also inspired the Gallery to introduce laughter yoga community workshops during the exhibition. Free one-hour laughter yoga sessions – held within Pine Rivers Art Gallery at 11am on Saturday 26th March and Saturday 30th April – will be open to all ages and suitable for all abilities. ‘When we laugh together, we connect,’ says workshop facilitator, Heather Joy Campbell, a Moreton Bay region resident and global ambassador of Laughter Yoga Australia. ‘Laughing together is like social glue: we all laugh in the same language. ‘Research confirms it’s not just laughter itself but sharing laughter together that benefits relationships. Shared laughter signals that we see the world in the same way and, in that moment, boosts our sense of connection.’ Laughter yoga harnesses laughter as an exercise for physical, mental, and social wellbeing, without jokes or humour. It combines gentle stretches, playful movement, and hearty belly laughter with mindful yogic breathwork.

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s Catman—the pento-paper brainchild of local 12-year-old author, Amiel Haddy.

Yes, you heard that right. We have a 12-year-old author in our community! A book writer since the ripe age of 9, Amiel has successfully published 6 children’s books—all of which are centered around the notorious superhero Catman and his thrilling adventures. Although he is really an 8-year-old boy named Alex, ‘Catman’ spends this book series fighting off evil with his supernatural powers of flight, super-speed, retractable claws, and a super-sonic purr. And how does Alex maintain this wild and wonderful double life? A magic, shapeshifting ring, of course! For as long as Amiel can remember, he’s always had an interest in books. But his calling for writing didn’t come until he was 9 and losing himself in Andy Griffiths’ world-renowned Treehouse series. He became so inspired that, in 2018, Amiel won first prize in an Andry Griffiths/ Dymock’s Books national writing competition. Amiel’s parents are super-duper proud of their son’s love for writing. His mum, Oriana, helped him publish and sell his books. Amiel boasts, ‘Mum thought I would lose interest after writing the first book, but I haven’t yet!’ Besides from reading and writing, Amiel is an avid videogamer, Lego-builder, and content creator on his YouTube Channel, TheGamingComputer_26. As such, Amiel’s big dreams for the future include becoming a famous author— unsurprisingly!—but also a famous streamer. Right now, the young teenager is continuing to shoot for the stars with his more mature fantasy novel in the making!

However, everyone beware! Amiel warns you all to buckle in for a rollercoaster-ride of reading fun. As the worlds of good and evil collide, which side do you think will win? Can Catman save the day after all?

TAX MATTERS

from local experts TaxArana, 2 Glenlee St, Arana Hills

‘My Boss wants me to work under an ABN’

I have had clients seek advice recently as their employer has asked that they work under an ABN and not as an employee. It is important for both employers and employees to understand their obligations in this regard. There are a number of issues around doing this and the ATO has six factors that determine whether a person is an employee or contractor. Difference between employees and contractors by the Australian Taxation Office (ato.gov.au) It is against the law for a business to incorrectly treat their employee as contractors. Businesses that do this are illegally lowering their labour costs by: • Not meeting their tax and super obligations • Denying workers their employee entitlements If you own a business and want an employee to work under an ABN you need to be aware that if you still control their hours of work, where they work and so on they may still be considered an employee. The link below is a useful tool when determining whether a person is an employee or contractor. Myths and facts by Australian Taxation Office Whether you are running a business and wish to make an employee a contractor or are an employee being asked to become a contractor you need to get advice around this before you run the risk of incurring significant penalties.

Cakes With A Whole Lot Of Personality An update from the Brisbane North Cake Decorators Association What a fun afternoon we had at our February Meeting!

Maureen with some of her cake faces • Your local resident painting company • Servicing Brisbane’s northside for over 10yrs • All domestic & commercial works • Professional & friendly staff • Quality materials & tools used

We had a workshop by our guest demonstrator Maureen who showed us how to make many types of character faces. Maureen patiently guided us through the steps to creating faces and they all began to take on their own personality. It certainly provided several hours of fun. Hopefully we will all be more confident when asked to create one for a cake. It was lovely to see so many members attend and to see some new faces. Our next meeting will be on Saturday 19th March at the Arana Hills Community Centre, Dawson Parade, Arana Hills, commencing at 1pm. We are a branch of the Queensland Cake Decorators Association and we aim to foster and improve the art of cake decorating and sugar craft by providing the opportunity for an exchange of ideas and skills. Each meeting we have some form of sharing, either a workshop or a demonstration by a member or guest. Check our Facebook page by searching Brisbane North Cake Decorators Association QCDA or email brisbanenorthcakedecorators@gmail.com for more information. New members are always welcome!

A Social Connection

Digital technology can be liberating for people living with disability as it is a clear facilitator for social inclusion. However, it can also prove challenging when finding the solution that works best for you.

Since the early months of 2020, all Australians were forced to connect online whilst they were isolating as a means of getting around COVID-19 restrictions. However, many found it difficult to find the video conferencing tool best suited to their individual needs. Typically, a video communication tool’s accessibility comes from ensuring that its functionality works for everyone, including those using assistive technologies such as screen readers, magnification, and captions. Dr Manisha Amin, the chief strategist at not-for-profit social enterprise group, Centre for Inclusive Design, says it’s essential for everyone to be able to participate online as that has become our new normal. She says it’s less about why people living with disability should be connected, but rather, why shouldn’t they be? ‘We’ve all shifted so much of our lives to digital platforms much faster than most people would have ever anticipated. With that, there have been many challenges. But why should a community be excluded by the design of the internet? Historically, people with disability have been completely left out of the design process, leading to them being inherently excluded by the outcome.’ Zoom appears to be favoured by those living with disability as their video conferencing tool of choice. Ideal for those who have hearing or visual impairment, Zoom offers closed

www.echo-news.com.au

captioning options, automatic transcripts and keyboard shortcuts. It also allows for a tool called FX Sound Enhancer to be added in to allow a vocal boost option for high-quality audio. For those communicating with a large number of people at once, Slack is a hugely popular app for chat and video calls. Users claim its large bold buttons and resizable text are helpful for users with moderately low vision. One-to-one video calls, such as those offered by Apple FaceTime, are well-suited for those who communicate using sign language, or have other physical challenges. Apple’s Live Listen lets you fine-tune your Made for iPhone hearing aids to help you hear more clearly, while its Switch Control functionality is an assistive technology that lets you use built-in features as well as a joystick, or other adaptive devices to control what’s on your screen. Hard-of-hearing users are likely to benefit from the automatic captions that are available as an option in Google Meet. Manisha says that since the start of lockdown, Zoom and Microsoft have both rapidly improved their platforms with captioning for people who are deaf or hard of hearing. This has also benefited those who have problems with their internet, as their connection may jump when someone is talking but the captions keep them up to date. For the vision impaired community, it is about changing the way we react online, she says. ‘Many of us are guilty of using hand gestures instead of speaking on video calls, thumbs up being a great example. We have to remember that this is not an effective form of communication in many circumstances. For the blind/low vision community, sound is essential to ensure they get the same experience and information. Zoom has been good, as it almost forces one speaker at a time, preventing cognitive overload by having too many voices talking at once.’ Manisha says COVID-19 has taught us that if we design for people often left behind, we design for everyone. For this reason, it’s important to continue to ask the questions: who is left behind? and what is it in our design that is causing that? ‘From captioning and having the option to see people’s faces, to technology that is simple to use and doesn’t compromise privacy. Just by working with diverse communities of real users we can make the world of difference.‘ Submitted by Susanne Jones, Managing Director, Just Better Care Brisbane North and CBD The Hills Echo, March 2022 - Page 21

Record Property Sales Continue

Smoke Alarms When Selling

The final price growth data for 2021 is now available and shows continued strong growth in our local area. Price growth has reached over 30% for all local suburbs since 2019 (See Figure 1).

From 1 January 2022, all homes or units being sold or leased, or existing leases renewed, will require hardwired photoelectric, interconnected smoke alarms.

Buyer trends and prices are changing each week, making it extremely difficult for an out of area agent to be in touch with what's happening in our suburb. As the ONLY LOCAL real estate agency in 'The Hills', we have a significant advantage over other agents when keeping up with the current fast-moving market. If you would like to explore the option of selling your home to take advantage of the current market, give our friendly team a call on 07 3164 7000, and we can arrange a free appraisal, so you know where you stand. 35.3%

The legislation requires smoke alarms to be installed in the following locations: in each bedroom in hallways which connect bedrooms and the rest of the dwelling; or if there is no hallway, between the bedrooms and other parts of the storey; and if there are no bedrooms on a storey, at least one smoke alarm must be installed in the most likely path of travel to exit the dwelling.

When a contract of sale is signed after the 31/12/21, the seller is obligated to upgrade the dwelling to the updated interconnected domestic smoke alarm standard prior to the dwelling being transferred. Ferny Grove Central Update

Transitioning to Supported Living

Despite a wet January and February, progress continues at the Ferny Grove Central Development. The foundations of the Stage 1 building (east retail and commuter deck) are completed.

Moving a loved one to a retirement village or nursing home is an emotional and complex process for families to navigate.

All columns to the basement have been poured, and a third of the basement slab has been completed. The builders and developer are keeping their fingers crossed for better weather so the basement can be completed in March, and the east retail and commuter deck will start to have a presence above the fencing around the site.

As a long-established suburb, we have many families reaching out for advice and assistance in this process. Our team are caring and compassionate and regularly support property owners (or their Power of Attorney) through the sales process of the family home. Contact our office for a no-obligation chat to discuss your options - Ph: 07 3164 7000

How to Network with the Kids in Tow

Life as a mum in business can be tough. Believe me I have four kids and I'll admit it, operating Echo News with them in tow can be tough sometimes! As any mother will resonate, challenges can range anywhere from working in the office with little ones at your feet, daycare calling to say the kids have a rash and need to be picked up early (dang, there goes my work day), to juggling the school runs and extra curricular activities around meetings. Oh, let's not forget the hurdle of trying to take a business call with ‘Mum, I'm hungry!’ howling from the back seat of the car! Another challenge is networking...or lack of it I might add. Let's face it, attending a business networking event with the kids in tow can come across as (a) unprofessional and (b) not much fun for you! Well, the good news for our local entrepreneurial mums is that you CAN network locally AND bring the kids! Mums in Business North Brisbane (MIB) is a new age movement, and is here to relieve that frustration and isolation that can be felt by our local female movers and shakers in business. These ladies are a group of ambitious and motivated Mums in Business that want to create a profitable business, and live life on their terms - motherhood is certainly not getting in their way of killing it in the business world. They differ from other networking communities as they are child friendly, so the mums are welcome to bring their children along to their events, allowing them to collaborate, learn, connect and grow, in a safe and welcoming environment with the opportunity with business growth potential. From sharing tips, strategies and advice on a range of topics from sales to social media, self care and planning, you are bound to learn a thing or two at their meetings.

WATER PET CREMATION

Last months MIB Brisbane North meeting at White Horse Ranch in Albany Creek.

Networking events also include fabulous guest speakers where you can learn tips and tricks from other local business ladies. Time to Support Local Business

With the recent wave of Omicron spreading throughout the region, a number of businesses have been impacted by COVID-related staff shortages, supply chain issues and loss of visitation.

In response, Moreton Bay Regional Council launched Back a Local last month, a six-week community campaign aimed at encouraging locals to eat, drink, shop, play, spend and back a local business. ‘Here in Moreton Bay, it’s in our DNA to embrace the Aussie way and look out for each other. Our businesses need the support of their local community, now more than ever,’ said Mayor Peter Flannery. ‘We might be the third largest local government in Australia, but our locals unapologetically embrace a sense of community that can rival even the smallest of towns. ‘As a local resident myself, I’m pledging to back a local business whenever I can in 2022, and I’m urging the community to join the cause.’ Whether it’s choosing to celebrate a special occasion at a local restaurant, engaging a professional service, or buying a gift, consumers are being urged to take a moment to consider where they are going to spend their hard-earned dollars. Our local businesses have been required to adapt during COVID to continue serving the community and have expressed their gratitude for community support. There are 29,000 businesses in the Moreton Bay Region supporting close to 140,000 jobs which help shape our region into Queensland’s best place to live, work and play. Back a Local’s objective is to help consumers develop a greater awareness of local businesses and the huge difference their

support can make to their staff and families. Mandy Schultz from Luvaberry Farm reminded consumers of the follow-on effect even a simple coffee stop at a café that supports local business can have on our local farmers. ‘Over the last two years, for many people with the closing of restaurants, cafes and catering and all those special events that require food, it’s taken its impact on many farms in the region and the restaurants,’ she said. ‘So, if you get the opportunity, check in with your local café whether or not they’re supporting local, because it really does make a difference to us.’ To help residents show their support, a range of free resources are available on the Moreton Bay Regional Council website, including a printable Back a Local poster. The community can help spread the message by sharing social media assets on their personal and business Facebook and Instagram pages. For more information about Locals Backing Locals, visit www. moretonbay.gov.au/back-a-local.

You Can Help! Become a ‘Friend of the GVK Lions’

From the Golden Valley Keperra Lions Club News with Paul Ryan

Have you noticed it’s always the same people volunteering in your neighbourhood? When attending the School P&C or P&F - AGM meeting nobody nominates for the vacant positions, so the same people end up running the Association again. The same thing happens in our Children’s Sporting Clubs, Music, Dance and every Organisation you can think of. What about when that email comes out asking for assistance – do we wait to see if others come forward first before volunteering or are we first to respond? You know - we get it. You’re busy. The family’s busy. Working from home in a COVID society means more pressure on family. Golden Valley Keperra Lions Club now has two types of member. This means you can help, without feeling frustrated by being too busy to volunteer. Here are the two types of membership; Full Membership: for those wanting to volunteer regularly. Generally, these people are in the 50 plus age group with less family commitments. Friends of Golden Valley Keperra Lions Club: This group (probably under 50) would be called on by email or phone on ‘as needs’ basis. They would receive monthly newsletters, along with other Lions information letting them know what we are up to. So what does your Golden Valley Keperra Lions Club do in the Community? A lot actually! • Run the Hills Carols at George Willmore Park each year • Assist MBRC with the Carnivale at George Willmore Park, part of the Hills Festival • Cook Sausages Sizzles at Bunnings Keperra and Harvey Norman Everton Park with funds to local Community Service • Cook Donuts at McPherson Park Train Rides – Bracken Ridge • Sell Lions Christmas Cakes and Raffles to assist our Community • Donate thousands of dollars each year to local School Chaplaincies to ensure every child attends their School Camp • Mow and clean up yards for locals who because of illness or injury cannot attend to this themselves • Mow Lions Park - Beverly Place corner of Ferny Way and Samford Rd • Fund Young Medical Researchers who have an idea, but not the funds to persue their dream.

• Manage the new Kakowan Community Facility at James Drysdale Reserve on behalf of MBRC. • Participate in Clean Up Australia Day each year with a gazetted area to clean – Collins Rd • Conduct youth programmes in conjunction with local high schools “Youth of the Year” and “Leos – youth groups” • Donated to the Tongan Volcano Tsunami appeal this year but every year there is a similar call for help. • Donate $5,000 across five local Churches every year to provide Christmas Hampers to families in need. I could continue with this list, because your community need a hand up on a regular basis. Golden Valley Keperra Lions turns 50 in June this year and some of our members have been with the club nearly that long, so I would like to thank them for their dedication. In every issue of The Hills Echo our advertisement asks for volunteers and every now and then we become excited when you contact us. With this new category ‘Friends of Golden Valley Keperra Lions’ now is your opportunity to get involved without committing to a regular schedule. WW2 Veteran | PLeading Aircraftman - Royal Australian Air Force Claude Bleakely was born in Cedarton, Queensland in July 1924. An avid sportsman, Claude played everything from Cricket to Rugby League to Tennis. He spent the majority of his service in Papua New Guinea, and recalls how lonely it was when he left the service. He even considered joining up again just for the company of mates. Claude is well known in the Woodford area (north of Brisbane) as the Proprietor of Woodford Carriers.

Joe was born in March 1922. Joe followed in his father’s footprints and joined the Navy so he could experience cuisines from around the world. Joe speaks about a little town called Wittenoom in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Wittenoom was known for asbestos mining which was ultimately linked to the deaths of many of the residents. The town was scratched from Australian maps in 2007. Joe passed away in September last year.

Henry Preston was born in Rose Bay, Sydney in January of 1923. Henry joined the Army in late 1943 after dropping out of school due to complications from a burst appendix. WANTED - Tales of the Terrific Trams

A Day To Remember

History

News and Views from a Tramway Muse by David Fryer

Samford Road, Enoggera - 1949

Here is a photo of the first day that trams started providing services to Enoggera – way back in 1949.

Does anyone out there remember catching a tram along the Enoggera line between 1949 and 1969 – the year when trams stopped operating in Brisbane? Anyone out there who was actually present at the event that first day back in 1949 when trams first came to Enoggera? If so, you may be interested in getting more involved with the Enoggera & Districts Historical Society Inc. (EDHS). We have our Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Sunday, 27th March. It is a great time to get involved. A display and refreshments will be on offer from 2pm, with the formal meeting starting at 3pm. April 13th, 1969. Joh Bjelke-Petersen is premier of Queensland; our troops are still fighting a lost cause in Vietnam; the Beatles are working on their final album, Abbey Road; and Cate Blanchett is just weeks away from her premier appearance – her birth.

More importantly, April 13th also marks the last tram to run on Brisbane streets. While it may have been a day to rejoice for Lord Mayor Clem Jones, it was a sad day for many Brisbane residents. To be fair, Mr Jones achieved so much for Brisbane in his fifteen years of office. He managed to develop a town plan, seal unpaved roads, improve drainage, and connect sewers to most of the city. Unfortunately, the town plan failed to save the Bellevue Hotel, Cloudlands, His Majesty’s Theatre and many other irreplaceable historic buildings. And his decision to abolish the trams was highly controversial at the time. While other cities like Lisbon, New Orleans and Melbourne celebrate their historic tramways today, we can only imagine a historic quarter in the CBD of Brisbane served by authentic trams. Fortunately, all is not lost. The Brisbane Tramway Museum has a fine collection of Clem Jones cast-offs and visitors will be able to ride a selection of authentic original trams on a special Commemoration Day on Saturday 9th April from 3pm to 7.30pm at 20 Tramway St, Ferny Grove. The theme will be a PRE-EASTER FESTIVAL, with plenty exhibits and activities for children including: • Making an Easter Bunny Face for a tram. • Making an Easter Bunny Head with a hole for a photo-shoot. • An Easter Bonnet Competition for primary school children. Rotary will rustle up some sizzling snags and the museum will offer ice creams and soft drinks. There’ll also be a coffee wagon on duty and it’s rumoured that a high-profile chocolate manufacturer may attend. Entry prices: Adult - $15, Concession - $12, Children - $8, Family - $46. The Brisbane Tramway Museum is proudly supported by the Brisbane City Council. The Hills Echo, March 2022 - Page 33

Planning Ahead - Part 3 An update from the Ferny Grove Upper Kedron & Keperra Residents Association

This month we continue to outline what we included in the community-led budget submission provided by our Association to Cr Toomey (The Gap Ward) in October 2021. The submission included recommendations on expenditure categories within BCC’s budget being: local roads, parks, bikeways, footpaths, reserves and public transport. Road and traffic access has always been a hot topic in Upper Kedron, particularly with the impending population growth associated with the Ellendale development and the current limited vehicle exits and public transport options available. As anticipated through our community consultation, there are significant requests for additional roads, including the Mt Nebo Road connection. New road and road extension requests by residents included: Canvey Road to Mt Nebo Road, Levitt Road to Upper Kedron Road (via the quarry) utilising existing O’Quinn Rd if necessary and Levitt Road from Canvey Road to Settlement Road along the gazetted easement. These works would sit outside of Council budget parameters but included it in our report to Cr Toomey for noting as part of future planning decisions. Based on community feedback, we presented the following as priority budget projects for roads in our suburbs: • Widening of Levitt Rd including completion of the footpaths and guttering along the full length of the road. • Cemetery Road - Proper sealed car parking. The poor parking amenity on this road presents a significant safety issue. • Seal parking shoulder on Upper Kedron Rd at aqua park Julatten Street Park - sealed car parking along Upper Kedron Road • McGinn Road - road surface repairs (these have since been done - and what a difference!) • Lengthen dual turning lanes from Cemetery onto Upper

Kedron Road before the intersection • O’Quinn Road & Levitt Road - curb and channelling on both sides of road. Several road safety improvements were also requested: • Minnie Street intersection into Levitt Rd - safety signage to warn of its sudden narrowness. (In the meantime, our Association continues to engage with the State and Local government to have Minnie St widened or straightened for entry into Rosella Street) • 360 degree mirror to assist with safe vehicle access to/from Upper Kedron Community Hall • 360 degree mirror in Rinavore St and Ballylin St Ferny Grove for safety in blindspots • Traffic calming on Canvey Road (particularly before the Wagtail Street intersection) - speed bump or safety mirror • McGinn Road - slower speed limit in light of traffic density and proximity to schools/daycare. The final budget allocation will be determined by Council and we appreciate that in the short time since we wrote this column, the council budget will be impacted by repairs required across Brisbane from recent flooding. Dickson News Peter DUTTON MP Federal Member for Dickson

A Message from Peter

It has been a big year for our community so far and I am pleased to provide an update on some the things I’ve been working on locally. You may have noticed upgrades taking place at parks, community facilities and on roads in our local area. Some of these are projects funded through the Morrison Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program, which provides funding to local councils to undertake important projects like the facilities and lighting upgrades taking place at Pine Hills Lightning FC (James Drysdale Reserve). Construction on the new park’n’ride for commuters at Ferny Grove train station is well underway and is due to be completed late 2022. More than 800 full time jobs are being supported thanks to the development of the Transit Orientated Development including about 285 jobs involved in the construction locally. Following completion there will be over 1,400 car parks for commuters. I am proud to have secured an $11 million contribution from the Federal Government for this important project. Planning and preparations to flood-proof Youngs Crossing are

progressing well, early works are due to start in late March 2022. Flood-proofing the crossing will help prevent road closures and reduce traffic congestion. I am pleased to have delivered over $32 million in federal funding for this upgrade and to be working with the Moreton Bay Regional Council on this joint project which will create about 70 direct jobs. Road safety on some of our local roads has been improved thanks to the Coalition Government’s Black Spot Program. Upgrades at Patricks Road from Bargo Street to Cycas Street, as well as at Collins and Francis Roads in Arana Hills were funded by this program. Locations funded under this program are identified using crash data to show where fatalities and serious injuries on our roads most frequently occur. These are just some of the things I’ve been working on for our community. However, there is still a lot of work to be done. By working together we can get the road, transport and facilities upgrades we need to make our community even better.

Child Care Subsidy Increase

From 7 March 2022, families with more than one child, aged five years or under, in care, will get a higher subsidy for their second child and any younger children. Eligible higher rate children receive a 30% higher subsidy, up to a maximum 95%. This will make a real difference for about 250,000 eligible Australian families who will be more than $2,200 a year better off. The annual subsidy cap of $10,655 was also removed on 10 December 2021 and will be applied retrospectively for the whole 2021/22 financial year. Find out more at www.dese.gov.au/child-care-subsidy

Amy Patten, a local resident who strives to better the lives of disenfranchised and isolated women, has launched an online bra-fitting business with Intimo.

Throughout their life, women change bra sizes. They grow through developing breast tissue and childbearing, they shrink after breastfeeding, and they may change in shape with age—all requiring different types of support. Many women overlook these changes and continue to purchase the same, outgrown, uncomfortable bra size for years. As well, many women have one or more bras in their drawer that they haven’t reached for in years. Think maternity bras—now too big—or teenager bras—now too tight, or sports bras that were rarely used. With most major department stores and speciality shops no longer providing fitting services, women struggle to obtain the guidance they deserve. This is where Amy’s fitting services come in handy. Ever heard of a ‘bra party’, where ladies get together under one roof to sip wine and try on new bra products? Attending these sort of events was the traditional avenue to accessing Intimo’s products, however this didn’t typically suit everyone. Over the past year, with pressure from fluctuating Covid-19 restrictions raining down on the business, Intimo developed virtual fittings. These sessions ensure that women everywhere—include our remote ladies—have access to the feel-good fit of comfortable, high quality lingerie underwear that they deserve. “I am just really excited to offer a virtual service to women to have an easy, professional bra fitting experience,” Amy explains. ‘At a virtual fitting I talk through how to take the measurements (that I would do in person) to ensure we find the perfect fit and styles for your shape. I am taking virtual bookings that use zoom as the platform – you are not required to undress—just wear a thin-fitted top over your best fitting bra. If you are not up with Zoom, you can contact me, and we will arrange an alternative fitting style.’ Through her roles as a teacher, a disabilities coach, a health promoter, and a mother of three girls, Amy has become well aware of the significant number of disadvantaged women and girls in her community and beyond. It is her dream to be able to better their lives in any way she can. As she started up her business in bra-fitting, it was her community she had in mind; she now had a means by which she could lift up the disadvantaged. Additionally, as part of this passion project, Amy set out to join Support the Girls, which is a non-forprofit organisation that is run by women, for women. She will collect pre-loved but good condition bras to donate and refit into the community. Amy reveals, ‘I look forward to donating my time to Support the Girls to fit donated bras on women and girls in rural outreach events later in the year.’ Now, to make a donation throughout ALL of March, donators must ensure that their bras are clean (no marks or stains), aren’t stretched, and have functional clips and straps. Anyone and everyone can drop their bras to Lee at Style my Way, Ferny Hills, or at the Sweat Like a Girl being held on the 26th of March. Alternatively, you can contact Fitted by Amy for collection arrangements via amy.patten@intimo.com.au or 0478 161 092. Come share the pre-love with your community! Learn About Medicine in the Garden An update from the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club

The Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club plans to meet at the Enoggera Memorial Hall in Trundle Street on Thursday, 7th April, unless Covid-19 conditions determine otherwise.

The guest speaker, Debbie Aitcheson, who was engaged for the cancelled February meeting, is happy to give her talk on Medicine from the Garden then. Technically, autumn begins this month (March), but at times there is still a lot of humidity. Once it was the golden rule to plant sweet pea seeds on St. Patrick's Day, but these days it is better to wait until much later in the month. To avoid your sweet pea plants being destroyed by cutworm, push the cardboard tube from a toilet roll into the soil leaving about 2 cm above the ground and plant the seed inside the tube. (This method can be used for other big seeds.) The cardboard barrier protects the base of the plant and disintegrates in time. March is the month to plant strawberry runners and cuttings from herbs such as lavender and rosemary. If your garden soil needs enriching for spring annuals, now is the time to do it so it will be ready for seedlings to be planted by the end of April. This club meets on the first Thursday of the calendar month except January. Meetings commence after morning tea which is served at 9.45 am. Visitors and new members are most welcome. The hall is close to public transport and accessible by wheelchair. For more information please phone the President, Pat, on 3356 1256.

Digging into Soil Health in March

Ferny Grove Garden Club is looking forward to meeting again on Friday, 25 March 2022, at 1pm. The club meets at St Matthew’s Church Hall, Church Road, Mitchelton. Members will have a talk and demonstration by a horticulturist from Bunnings, on soil health. Each gathering of the garden club consists of a meeting, a speaker on a horticultural topic, afternoon tea and the opportunity to exchange gardening stories. For more information about joining, call Elizabeth on 07 3851 0568.

March Gardening with The Hills Organic Garden

We have certainly been lucky this summer with the amount of frequent rain we have been receiving and the bearable temperatures. We have really only had a few really hot, humid days so far which has been a welcome surprise. This has also been a blessing for our garden as our Napoli squash have been bearing extremely well because they enjoy the constant rain. On the other hand, our eggplants and capsicums have not liked the wet quite so much as they tend to get diseased. Our Rosellas do not seem to be fruiting as well as normal either. With the wet weather comes lots of moths, caterpillars etc. which enjoy the abundant growth of our plants to munch on. We are quite excited to have a couple of flowers on our dragon fruit vine, so hopefully we will have some fruit. Mowing and weeding are a constant chore at the moment with the frequent showers making everything grow at twice the normal rate. However, we have a couple of very energetic members who tackle the whipper snipping and mowing each week to keep everything under control. Our members are very proud of their Community Garden and strive to keep it looking tidy and an inviting place to come and work as well as welcoming visitors who often come down to have a look at our garden. The HOG community is a friendly group who offer people in the Hills District the opportunity to grow vegetables using organic principles. Age is no barrier so feel free to come along one Sunday afternoon to have a chat and a look around our beautiful garden.

Counselling Corner

Taking Back Control During Uncertain Times This article is brought to you by Social Worker, Elena Bishop. Elena is the director of Supportive Therapy and Social Work in Arana Hills. She has a wealth of knowledge and insight into the industry.

It’s beginning to look like the fog is clearing, especially compared to the chaos of the past 2 years. This pandemic has been a marathon, full of unchartered waters. Sometimes it feels like we are barely surviving, hanging on by a thread. The fatigue and burnout can feel like it has settled in, accompanied by a loss of motivation and exhaustion. Our social lives have taken a hit, extroverts can feel like converted introverts. We have been continually bombarded with changing rules, new societal expectations, and the daunting task of conformity. If you’re a parent, balancing work with home schooling and lockdowns can be an impossible task. You can feel like a caged lion. Bonus points, face masks in an Aussie summer do not mix—it feels like a permanent sweat moustache! When we feel things are out of control, it can be overwhelming and can lead to shutting down as a protective measure. Once forced lockdowns can now be voluntary, resulting in loneliness and isolation. Motivated by fear. Alternatively, it can feel like our OCD tendencies have gotten stronger to gain control over our immediate surroundings. So, when we feel we are no longer a part of the decision-making process of our own lives, how do we take back control?

Firstly, look at practical solutions for empowerment. Look at the good habits we have adopted and continue them. Supporting our small local businesses when we can. Helping out the vulnerable population who may be struggling. This can be volunteering or donating your time to those in need. Slowing down and focusing on what is important in your life. Make yourself a priority. No more ‘Rushing Women’s Syndrome’. Checking on people who may live alone or have limited transport. Learning to respect other people opinions, compassion instead of judgement. Continue your new routines; short arvo walks in the sun or weekly zoom chats with mates. Daily exercise does huge shifts in mental health. Keep it all going! Secondly, we can take happiness into our own hands. Easier said than done right? Well, according to Positive Psychology. achieving wellbeing and happiness can be as easy as following a 5 step formula. 1. Positive emotion – learn to appreciate what you have, be grateful and thankful for little things in your life every day. 2. Engagement – participate in activities that show your strengths, this increases your confidence and self-belief. 3. Relationships – as social beings, doing something unexpected and kind for others instantly increases wellbeing. 4. Meaning – finding something in your life or work worthwhile & finding purpose. 5. Accomplishments – set achievable goals, when you achieve them acknowledge and celebrate your success. There is so much evidence supporting this formula! Thirdly, psychological traps to avoid. ‘Learned Helplessness’ is when you believe that you have no control over what occurs in your life. Begins in childhood. Replace this with ‘Learned Optimism’ where satisfaction in life can be grown – practice every day. Reflecting on your ‘Locus of Control’… you always seem to be a victim with bad things happening to you, or your achievements are influenced purely by your own decisions. ‘Self-Fulfilling Prophecy’ is the result of being told what you deserve too many times; you will believe it and become it. As an adult, tell yourself daily about your strengths. Tell yourself that you are worthwhile. Be compassionate to yourself when you don’t do as well as you expected. Think of it as talking to yourself as if you would your best mate who was feeling down. You are not alone, so find your tribe. If you feel like you are struggling, talk to a counsellor like myself or find someone who you feel safe with. Lack of control can make us feel overwhelmed and we shut down. Learning inspiration to motivate yourself can then result in making a change. Take your life back with positive choices! We’re all in this together.

Do you know that if you text 0477 13 11

14 between 6pm - midnight when you are in need of support, a trained Lifeline crisis support worker will text with you? So if you are feeling overwhelmed or having difficulty coping, please drop them a text. They listen without judgement and provide a safe space to discuss your needs, worries or concerns. They will also work with you to explore options for support. www.echo-news.com.au

Month Just Nat: Life in the Fast Lane with Natalie Lowndes

Authored by Pine Rivers local, Natalie Lowndes Described by Ian Skippen as: ‘Just that—one woman’s race through life. Flat out down the straights and no backing off on the corners. From the back streets of Kallangur to the racetrack and outback, in ‘Just Nat’ beats a huge heart and soul.’ The book’s synopsis: For self-professed bogan, Natalie Lowndes, life centred around her brother until a shocking tragedy. Teenaged Nat fled in the night with her horse Blue. What happened next led her into the path of an emerging racecar driver. A whirlwind romance, and Nat woke to her photo on the front pages. Jill Johnson took her under her wing, and as her husband cemented his legendary status on track, Nat's pleasure in mixing with the crowds saw her become a fan favourite. Natalie Lowndes tells stories from behind the scenes when fans were still allowed in the pits. Sooner than expected, kids arrived. On one stretch of road life accelerated, the other veered off-course. Tales from a mum, land-owner, horselover, friend, daughter, sister and a girl from the 'burbs who was thrust into a world of big talent, big money and big egos. Includes interviews with Helen Lowndes, Jill Johnson, Bev Brock and Alyson Faulkner. This official biography of Natalie Lowndes, former wife of V8 racing car champion, Craig Lowndes, has drawn wide commendations, with Betty Klimenko, Erebus Motorsport Super Cars racing team owner, saying ‘Absolutely amazing, so much so I am going to read it a second time.’ And others: ‘A great story that is told well. It was easy to read. Mostly I laughed but my heart broke a few times too. Very much recommend. It was written without pettiness or attention seeking,’ Sharon A. ‘Wowee. There’s a lot to take in. It’s so well written. One thing I’ve come to realise, she (and Craig Lowndes for that matter) have such an amazing ability to keep that smile on, no matter what’s happening inside, and the ability to smile and make others feel okay, even when they’re not,’ Peter. ‘Just Nat: Life in the Fast Lane with Natalie Lowndes’ is available from all good bookstores and libraries, and online at local publisher hawkeyebooks.com.au. You can meet Natalie Lowndes and Natalie Kile at an InConversation event at Caboolture Library on Saturday 19th March 1:30pm to 3pm. www.echo-news.com.au
