Local Ladies Celebrate Half a Century of Friendship By Georgia Wright Thursday the 18th January, 2024, marks 50 years since a group of local ladies met while teaching at Ferny Hills State School in 1974. A group who, to this day, remain in close contact and cherish their lifetimes’ worth of memories made together. To commemorate this milestone, the ladies held their annual reunion lunch at the Everton Park Tavern—a tradition they have made sure to continue for all five decades of friendship. Georgia Wright, Echo News’ journalist, was fortunate enough to pop in for this year’s lunch and listen to their beautiful stories. The seven ladies in attendance— Jan Cameron, Elizabeth Kriesch, June Nowitzki, Lesley Twigg, Kath Kaminski, Geraldine McLaughlin, and Wendy Cornford—were more than eager to reminisce on their favourite moments spent together. Wistful and smiling, they shared tales of travelling on dirt roads in “trusty Volkswagen Beetles” to reach the schools they taught at, navigating the 1974 floods together, and even training for a sort of Ninja Warrior program as a means of fundraising for a new school hall! Interestingly, the lunch was as much of a trip down memory lane for the ladies as it was a history lesson for Georgia. She learnt that back in their day, Ferny Hills State School was a two-teacher, one-building school that was considered suitable for country service. It was mortifying, as well, for Georgia to learn that female teachers were formally forbidden to wear Continued on page 5

A note from Katie Maclean, the Editor

Dear Readers, As we step into the vibrant landscape of 2024, I find myself reflecting on the incredible journey we’ve shared over the past year. It has truly been a privilege to bring you the latest community news, stories, and events each month, and I want to express my deepest gratitude to our remarkable community for the unwavering support of our local magazines. Our magazines are more than just publications; they are a testament to the spirit of our community. Crafted by locals for locals, our coverage seeks to connect people around issues that matter, making our magazines often referred to as ‘The People’s Papers’. We take pride in providing an independent voice, free from political bias – a quality we hold dear. The past year has been a testament to the resilience and growth of our grassroots media outlet. I am thrilled to share that our print publications continue to thrive. Covering a vast area of North West Brisbane through direct letterbox delivery and local magazine placement, our monthly print run now stands at an impressive 45,000 copies across the Eatons, Everton, and Hills Echo. You can now conveniently pick up the latest issue from various local coffee shops, shopping precincts, and businesses, and I extend my heartfelt thanks to the businesses that graciously accommodate our magazine stands. While print remains our hero, we recognize the need to keep up with the times. Echo News has evolved into a multimedia platform for community news, featuring a popular website, active social media channels, a brand-new app, and an e-newsletter. Our redesigned website, www.echo-news.com. au, offers a user-friendly experience, making it a hub for the latest news, stories, and much more so be sure to check it out. A special shout-out to our loyal Echo News advertising family – your continued support in both print and online is the backbone of our local community publication. Without you, bringing this magazine to your letterbox each month would not be possible. A heartfelt thanks is also extended to the numerous community groups, sports clubs, and residents who have contributed engaging content throughout the year, enriching the pages of our magazines. Remember if you have a story to share, please get in touch. As an independent media outlet, we lack extensive teams or extravagant offices at my disposal. Nonetheless, I am immensely grateful for the exceptional team that supports me in keeping Echo News running smoothly. I consider myself fortunate to have Georgia Wright, a journalist who brings us truly sensational stories, and Greg, who diligently distributes magazines to local businesses and ensures our stands are well-stocked. If you happen to come across Greg during your travels, don’t hesitate to give him a friendly greeting! Lastly, I want to thank YOU, our loyal readers, who continue to pick up our much-loved magazines and follow us each month. Your support means the world to us. Keep reading in 2024 – we have so much more in store for you! Warm Regards, Katie Maclean, Editor/Publisher, Echo News

Local Ladies Celebrate Half a Century of Friendship

Continued from page 3 trousers to work. Instead, skirts and stockings were mandatory uniform. As well, when Elizabeth began her career in 1968 at Virginia State School, she used a chalkboard to teach her students, who each had handheld slates to write notes on. Funny enough, her last leg of teaching was during Covid, when her job was reduced to running classes online via Teams meetings. “Computers hadn’t even been invented when I first started teaching!” Elizabeth explained, shaking her head at how much times have changed. Another huge culture shock took place when the ladies spoke of getting paid in cash, or enveloped cheques that they had to collect from the bank each week, rather than through online bank transfers. But history lessons aside, it was the unconditional love the ladies had for each other and for their careers that shone through most over lunch. Despite many of the ladies having reached retirement, it sounded like a conflicting task for them to leave behind teaching. All seven of the women began working as teachers as soon as they graduated from school and did not switch careers once. All seven, as well, managed to pass on the teaching torch to their children, effectively raising the next generation of passionate teachers! As it turns out, their children have all known each other since birth, as the ladies used to host a playgroup together as young mothers! Forty odd years later, they still remain in contact.

Before Georgia took off, the ladies all nodded along as Elizabeth shared with her that the most important thing you can do in life is maintain contact with old friends. She believes that carrying your loved ones through all phases of your life can help you remain in touch with your own identity. For there is no reason to neglect your most treasured memories—and people—no matter how many years have passed. They are part of you, after all.

Excitement Brews as Ferny Grove Markets Return Home

Excitement is brewing among local residents as the cherished Ferny Grove Markets prepare to make a grand comeback.

Recent speculations and rumors circulating on Facebook community pages sparked a surge of inquiries to Echo News, prompting a direct conversation with Colin, the Market Convenor, to shed light on the exciting news. With the final approval from the Council in hand, the markets are gearing up for a monthly return on the first Saturday of each month. The chosen venue for this revival is the iconic Brisbane Tramway Museum, located at 20 Tramway Street, Ferny Grove. Mark your calendars for the much-anticipated first market, set to take place on Saturday, 2nd March, from 6 am to 11 am. Ferny Grove Markets have held a special place in the hearts of locals since their establishment in 1963. A longstanding attraction in the district, these markets have been a vibrant community hub, bringing residents and stallholders together. Originally taking place every Sunday at Ferny Grove train station, the markets underwent a transition due to the new Transport Orientated Development at the station. Despite relocating to Chermside every Sunday, the return of the markets to the district on the first Saturday of every month is a welcomed addition, eagerly anticipated by locals. The new venue at the Brisbane Tramway Museum offers a fresh and exciting backdrop for the markets, promising a delightful experience for both regular patrons and newcomers.

Leslie Hunter and ‘Scruffy’ look forward to holding their fresh fruit and veggies stall at the markets Whether you're looking to stock up your fridge and pantry, find a new bike for the kids, or simply indulge in a coffee and breakfast, the Ferny Grove Markets on the 2nd of March are the place to be. For stall inquiries and additional information, please contact Colin at 0418 721 751. Nurturing the Tranquil Lull

An update from the Hills Organic Garden The festive season has come and gone and, once again, our garden is now almost in holiday mode with very little growing at the moment. Summer is a very quiet time at the garden apart from carrying out maintenance over these hotter months. Weeding the beds, mowing and whipper snipping are high on the list of tasks in order to keep the garden looking good. With the amount of rain we have had recently the grass and weeds are almost out of control. Our members are very proud of their Community Garden and strive to keep it looking tidy and an inviting place to work as well as welcoming visitors who often come down to have a look at our garden. As we do not have much growing at the moment, most of the beds will have a good rest over the hotter months . However, come March the fertilising and composting will start in preparation for winter planting. This is an exciting time for members as they choose what they would like to plant around April and ultimately consume when harvest time comes around in August/September. The HOG community is a friendly group who offer people in the Hills District the opportunity to grow vegetables using organic principles. Age is no barrier so feel free to come along one Sunday afternoon to have a chat and a look around our beautiful garden. Members meet on a Sunday afternoon during the summer months from 3pm - 5pm. As well, they also attend the garden through the week to water and do general maintenance. You will find the group at 416 Bunya Road, Bunya next to the Off Leash Dog Park. Membership Fees per year are $20 for adults, $30 for family and $10 for Juniors. Visit hog.org.au, search ‘The Hills Organic Garden’ on Facebook or phone 0415 856 532 for information. The team look forward to meeting you.

Did you know there is one simple step you can take that will nurture your well-being WHILE connecting you with nature and a community of like-minded individuals? It’s easy: join a garden club! This gem of an activity promises a multitude of benefits: 1. Health and Well-being. Gardening is known to have numerous physical and mental health benefits. Engaging in outdoor activities like planting, weeding and harvesting can be an excellent way to stay active, reduce stress and maintain a healthy lifestyle. 2. Knowledge and Skill Development. Joining a garden club gives you access to a wealth of knowledge and experience from seasoned gardeners. Whether you are a novice or a natural, whether your garden is large or consists of potted plants alone, the club environment fosters a culture of learning and sharing. 3. Community and Social Connections. In a garden club, you'll find a community of individuals who share a passion for plants. Sharing tips and swapping seeds create a sense of camaraderie and belonging that goes beyond the garden. 4. Seasonal Rhythms and Mindfulness. Gardening forces us to reconnect with the natural rhythm of the seasons. It encourages mindfulness and inspires awe as you observe the growth cycles of plants and immerse yourself in the present moment. In 2024, our garden club will celebrate 60 years of welcoming visitors and new members to a world where greenery, knowledge and friendships flourish. Why not get involved? Your green thumb will thank you and your health will benefit - what’s not to love?! A Sweet Year of Creativity in the Pipeline

As the new year unfolds, Brisbane North Cake Decorators are poised for an exciting and bustling year, marked by a successful mid-January meeting that saw nearly all members in attendance.

Despite the necessary business discussions that occur every other month, the gathering took a delightful turn with a captivating demonstration by the talented Maria. Maria’s expertise took center stage as she showcased the art of creating edible fabric using a simple combination of gelatine and white chocolate. The result? A textile that not only mimics the appearance but also the tactile feel of silk, leaving all members in awe of her artistic prowess. Looking ahead, the highlight of the year is undoubtedly the annual cake show scheduled for June. The event is set to take place at a new, more central venue, anticipating a larger audience to marvel at the incredible creations by the association‘s members. Plans are already in motion for a branch display at the show, with the theme aptly named ‘Imagination.’ The upcoming February meeting, slated for the 17th, promises to be a hands-on experience with a workshop commencing at 1:00 pm. Hosted at the Arana Hills Community Hall on Dawson Parade, members will indulge in a delightful afternoon tea while engaging in creative endeavors. Brisbane North Cake Decorators extends a warm invitation to potential new members who can connect through their Facebook page, Brisbane North Cake Decorators Association QCDA, or via email at brisbanenorthcakedecorators@ gmail.com.

David’s extensive 24year career in Building and Construction reflects his journey that began with an apprenticeship at the age of 16. After successfully completing his apprenticeship, he took a significant step in acquiring his builder’s license. At the age of 19 David undertook his first major renovation project on the family’s Queenslander home. This hands on experience laid the foundation for his passion for renovating traditional, heritage and character homes – a passion that has remained constant throughout his career. David continued to build his skills and knowledge by working with other builders, and despite the diverse experience gained from different project and collaborations his interests were drawn to restoration and renovation of homes with historical significance. He then took a bold step forward by establishing his own company, Louden Builders. This move allowed him to leverage his wealth of experiences and expertise to create a business that reflects his commitment to quality craftsmanship and meticulous attention to details. Louden Builders is based in the Grange and Keperra/ Samford working throughout North Brisbane and surrounding areas.

With 16 years experience in the electrical trade, you can be rest assured that Josh Townsend, owner of Central Electrical and Data Pty Ltd (CED) knows what he is doing! After graduating from Mt Maria College, Josh went on to complete an electrical apprenticeship. He found a passion for the trade and in March 2013, along with his wife Samantha, established their own family business, CED. Josh and his team pride themselves on providing quality workmanship, on time and at a reasonable cost. With these admirable traits, it is of no surprise that the business placed second for Brisbane’s Best Electrician poll run by the Courier Mail last year. With the business thriving, Josh now employs four electricians that all live in the local area. As a long-time local, Josh is delighted to be in a position to give back to the community where he can. Every year in CED’s birthday month of March, the team run a communityfocused campaign - giving back to the community where they can. With a no job too big or small policy, CED proudly work with home and business owners, real estates and local builders. They offer a wide range of services from electrical, air conditioning, data and so much more. The team service the whole of the Brisbane and Moreton Bay region.

Calling All Handstanders! Help Break Records

Local Albany Creek legend, 17-year-old James Wraight from Padua College has been making big waves with a unique approach to raising awareness and funds for the domestic and family violence foundation, Small Steps 4 Hannah.

Small Steps 4 Hannah was established by Sue and Lloyd, parents of the late Hannah Clark, and her three children who tragically lost their lives when their car was set on fire by Hannah's husband on February 19, 2020. The foundation has tirelessly worked to raise awareness about domestic violence, resulting in legal changes that recognize coercive control as a form of abuse. In the face of a growing incidence of domestic and family violence, the foundation emphasizes the importance of education and awareness. Drawing inspiration from Hannah and her children, who were avid fans of handstands in their own gym, James

joined an online challenge – a handstand every day for 19 days that was brought to his attention by local running group Run With Rob. Hoping to use his leverage as a national gymnast, the goal was to raise both funds and awareness for Small Steps 4 Hannah. James created a GoFundMe page and, alongside his mother, embarked on a journey to visit numerous Brisbane landmarks. At each location, he held a handstand for either 19 seconds or took 19 steps on his hands. In his first year, James raised an impressive $1500, and in the second year, the amount nearly doubled to $2500. The culmination of his efforts was marked by a generous $1000 check presented by his college principal to Sue and Lloyd on the final day of the challenge. Determined to extend his support, James is now gearing up to take part in a remarkable endeavour organised by the Small Steps For Hannah Foundation – a Guinness Book of Records attempt to host the largest group handstand ever. Calling on participants from various backgrounds, including gymnasts, dancers, cheerleaders, builders, bakers, and even candlestick makers, Small Steps For Hannah hopes to assemble a group capable of holding a handstand for a mere 5 seconds – with straight legs and locked arms. Scheduled for Sunday, February 18, 2024, at Hannah’s Place Memorial Park in Camp Hill, the record-breaking attempt aims to bring together over 400 handstand enthusiasts. Not only will participants potentially etch their names in the Guinness Book of Records, but they will also contribute to a noble cause by raising funds to combat Domestic and Family Violence. Registration for the event is open, and interested individuals can sign up by scanning the provided QR code or visiting the official event website. Community Unites in Generosity

In our December editions, you may recall a story published across our magazines regarding five-year-old Emily Borg, a cherished member of the community, who tragically passed away last year. Emily was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, an aggressive childhood cancer, and underwent intensive chemotherapy and surgery. However, complications arose after a successful tumor removal, leading to a rare infection that her weakened immune system couldn't overcome. In honor of Emily, her family organized a Christmas toy drive for children at the Queensland Children’s Hospital which exceeded all expectations. What began as an aim to contribute 500 gifts for the children at the hospital, resulted in an overwhelming collection of over 1500 presents, marking an incredible threefold achievement. Emily's parents Emma and Brodie thanks to everyone who contributed to Emily's toy drive. www.echo-news.com.au

NEW YEAR, NEW YOU

Bringing JOY to the Community

For the past five years a group of locals – whose ages range from 55 to 87 - have been meeting every week for exercise, fun and a lot of laughter.

It’s called JOY – Just Older Youth – exercise classes for the 55+. Local business Enhance PT offer these low to moderate intensity exercise classes that have been designed specifically for people who are 55 and above. The classes focus on improving balance, strength, and flexibility as well as the improvement of general fitness levels. ‘It's not inevitable that people of a certain age won’t be capable of doing things. There's a lot of research out there that suggests feeling good about ageing and about ourselves can actually help us to live more positively and longer,’ says Miranda, owner and operator of Enhance PT. ‘Exercise is one of the best and simplest ways to combat the many effects of ageing. The positive effects of physical activity for older adults are boundless. We are extremely passionate about keeping our more mature population moving freely, living stronger and living independently for as long as possible.’ In a refreshing approach, the classes and environment at Enhance PT are very different to a gym and distinguishes itself as a non-glamour zone, deliberately omitting mirrors from its space. In addition, the impact of JOY classes extends beyond physical fitness for clients. Numerous stories have emerged of individuals rekindling lost connections and forging new friendships during their time here. The profound social

www.echo-news.com.au

interaction fostered in these classes has demonstrated a significant positive influence on both physical and mental well-being. With a dedicated focus on the 55+ age group for several years, our commitment to this demographic is underscored by the recognition of the transformative potential of tailored exercise prescriptions. Acknowledging the potential life-changing nature of injuries post-55, we emphasize the importance of delivering exercise programs tailored to accommodate the unique needs of aging bodies, a responsibility shouldered by our experienced instructors. Exercise can assist in many age-related changes to muscles, bones and joints and it’s never too late to start. So, if gyms aren’t your thing and you’re looking for safe, social and fun exercise classes why not come along and join JOY? All fitness levels and ages are welcome. JOY Arana Hills classes run every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday underneath the All Saints church at 86 Cobbity Crescent, Arana Hills (directly across from the Library). JOY Samford classes run every Monday and Friday at the Samford Scout shelter shed, adjacent to the scout den 62 Cash Avenue North, Samford. For more information visit www.enhancept. com.au or call Miranda on 0434 401 750 DID YOU KNOW? The body can produce enough heat in just half an hour to boil water. Each hour, the human body creates 350,000 joules of energy, which creates the same amount of energy as a 100-watt light bulb.

The History of the Main Building at the Museum An update from the Samford Museum

The former Albany Creek School’s Headmaster’s residence found a new home in 1984 and is now located at the Samford Historical Museum.

A verandah and office have been added. The addition gives a certain ambience otherwise it has changed very little in structure. The displays throughout are of course everyday items found in family homes of years gone by. A treasure trove of preserved, valuable family heirlooms entrusted to the care of the museum. On entry to the ‘Main building’ is the front desk, manned by a volunteer whose job it is to give you printed information regarding the different buildings within the grounds, also to accept donations to be recorded in the appropriate register. Each numbered item has a designated area to be exhibited. This step enables the relatives and the many visitors to view a safe and secured environment away from deterioration, good way of preserving such collectables and memorabilia. Plus, the treasured memories we each experience as we view the exhibits and displays. History over the years from early settlement to present day events and information are located throughout the museum. An example is land ownership, local schools, Camp Mountain Train Smash, copies of The Village Pumps, Aboriginal history plus much more. Especially old treasured photos which require data base entry numbers, typed captions and history applicable to the snapshots, then designated to their appropriate displayed files for our visitors to view and read. As for any office with a business there is always work to be done. Typing and recording meetings, updating changes in government and business, volunteer’s membership and insurance, and the list goes on and on. Like an office, there is always plenty to do. Then there is our very valued and knowledgeable local historian. She is the “go to” person and what she does not know about Samford and surrounds is not worth speaking about. Another volunteer and an expert in his field willingly demonstrates his knowledge regarding information on all defence forces during each of the years plus much more. Also family history is his forte.’ The diorama depicting an Aboriginal Bora Ring was donated to us by the Queensland Museum after they moved to South Bank. It is a replica of the genuine celebration telling the story and history behind such an amazing scene. It is in fact a ceremony for males only. The young boys are initiated into a specific group with a special ritual accepting them into manhood. The museum is a must see venue where you will find out much more about years gone by. Located in Station Street, Samford Village just behind John Scott Park. Open WEDNESDAY and SUNDAY 10AM – 4PM. Volunteers always welcome. For all Group bookings contact 3289 2743. Bunker Road at Bunyaville

The Northern Suburbs Express: 1966

Thank you to Upper Kedron local Suzi Latta! Whilst doing a good old clean out, Suzi stumbled upon the 6th April, 1966 edition of the old local paper the Northern Suburbs Express. This was a Newspaper that used to circulate around the Northern Suburbs.

Charlie Haire, our young Echo team member at the old military bunker at Bunyaville

If only the trees could talk...I bet they could tell us a few tales about this historical treasure from WW2 located in the Bunyaville Conservation Park!

This military bunker at Bunyaville was assembled by the army in August 1943. It was established as part of an area which was designated as a bomb cemetery and experimental explosive testing ground. The bomb cemetery remained in use until July 1945 and was used by both Australian and American forces. There is a huge bomb crater in the creek below the bunker... There are whispers that the giant crater was from a B-25 Mitchell bomber aircraft that crashed near the Jinker Track, however those rumours are unsubstantiated .

Sports Grounds 1994

Boy, has the sports grounds changed up at James Drysdale Reserve! Pictured above is the entrance and car park to the old Pine Hills Sports Club at James Drysdale Reserve in Bunya in 1994. Below is the sports grounds from the rear of the club.

Everton News from your State Member for Everton TIM MANDER Australia Day – Citizenship Awards

Social Housing Update

Once again I was honoured to attend the Award Ceremony welcoming our newest Australian Citizens into our local community. These ceremonies give us pause to reflect on the importance of welcoming those who make the commitment to pledge allegiance to our country.

Tim Mander MP with a few of the new citizens at the Australia Day 2024 ceremony

With more than 43,000 Queenslanders desperately waiting for social housing, it was very disappointing to hear the State Government had made no progress in working out how the Pinkenba Quarantine Centre could be used to house those desperate for a roof over their head. This centre has sat dormant for the last two years with 500 beds. When you add this to the $220m that was wasted on the 1000 bed Wellcamp facility in Toowoomba, it’s clear the State Labor government is offering very little but false hope. Additionally, with the costs of private rentals soaring and record low vacancy rates, the situation is becoming more desperate. As the shadow minister for housing, I am determined to increase the supply of houses … in all categories. The LNP has put solutions on the table to ease the Queensland Housing Crisis, including prioritising infrastructure partnerships with local government to unlock more land for housing, unleashing the community housing sector and setting KPIs and delivering social housing projects on-time and on-budget. A TIP TO HELP OUR BEES!...During the summer months there are fewer flowers, food sources and water for the bees. Furthermore, bees may drown as they try to drink from the pools when they do find water. To give our bees a helping hand, why not grate an Apple and add some water to the bowl? The bees will be able to get the sugars from the fruit and drink the water but not drown as they can stand on pieces of fruit. Our bee populations are threatened, let’s give them all the support we can!

February 2024

An update from the Arana Hills & Districts Senior Citizens Club Inc

After a bit of a holiday break the Arana Hills Senior Citizen Club recently restarted their activities. Hoy and cards will be played on Friday the 9th and 23rd of February, Bingo and cards takes place on 16th February and 1st of March, indoor bowling is every Friday and Wednesday from 1pm to 3pm. So don’t sit at home getting bored make a new years resolution to join us in the fun and make new friends. While all aforementioned activities are good for your mental wellbeing bowling has the extra benefit of including light physical exercise that the majority of people can do until a very advanced age. If you have never bowled before don’t worry, one of our members never bowled until he was 86 years old! Now six years later at the age of 92, he is still enjoying it, so don’t let age stop you. If you are looking for a bit of socialisation have a think about joining us. We meet The Hills Community Hall, 291 Dawson Parade, Arana Hills. Yearly membership is only $7, admission on activity day is only $5, which includes coffee tea and biscuits, so give it some thought. For more information ring Marcia on 0438 786 871.
