Honouring a Community Icon
In a heartfelt ceremony on Friday, 23rd February, a special plaque was unveiled at Leslie Patrick Park to commemorate the late Doug Campbell, a beloved figure in the Hills District community.
The event was attended by Doug's wife, children, grandchildren, and even great-grandchildren, (pictured on the front cover) along with notable figures such as Councillor Matt Constance, Mayor Peter Flannery, Family Minister Peter Dutton MP, and the Grovely State School Captains.
Doug Campbell, known for his exceptional ceramic art and dedicated community work, was a passionate advocate for local voices and encouraged community members to actively participate in shaping their surroundings. His legacy continues to resonate, as evidenced by the unveiling of the commemorative plaque.
During the ceremony, Doug's wife unveiled the plaque, expressing her delight that Doug's impact on the community was still alive and thriving. Doug, a long-time local of the Hills District, had left an indelible mark on the community before his passing in 2011, raising a wonderful family and contributing significantly to the local arts scene.
'Doug Campbell Place,' extends approximately 75 meters along Dawson Parade, encompassing the Hills District Town Green area opposite Patricks Road in Arana Hills. Many of Doug's cherished ceramic art installations are showcased throughout the park.
Echo News will have a full story regarding his remarkable life story in the April edition.

Community Fixing in Full Swing
Last month witnessed a bustling session at Repair Cafe The Grove as skilled volunteers passionately dedicated their time to mend and fix a diverse array of items brought in by members of the community.
At the heart of Repair Cafe The Grove lies a commitment to harnessing the expertise of skilled volunteers in the repair and restoration of broken or malfunctioning items. The spectrum of services extends from electronics rewiring and machinery tinkering to the restoration of beloved household possessions.
These community-driven repair cafés offer an invaluable service, particularly for singular broken items that may be beyond warranty or too expensive to replace.
The atmosphere at Repair Cafe The Grove is not only about technical expertise but also about fostering a sense of community. Volunteers readily share helpful suggestions, creating an environment where camaraderie flourishes alongside the mending of items. And what better way to complement the repair process than with a cup of coffee and a slice of cake?
Ensuring safety is paramount, especially when dealing with 240-volt appliance repairs. Items undergo rigorous testing upon arrival to ensure they are safe for the licensed electrician volunteers to work on. Additionally, a final check on the way out ensures the repaired item is safe for the user, offering peace of mind to those who bring in their appliances for restoration.
Even high-quality furniture, with joints reliant on glue, receives attention at Repair Cafe The Grove. Aging glue can weaken, causing furniture, particularly dining chairs, to groan under the pressures of family life. Rather than abandoning
these items, a touch of judicious gluing and perhaps an extra screw or two can restore them to a 'respectable' state. The repair spectrum extends to clothing adjustments and repairs, showcasing the team's skillful attention to detail. Often, a minor yet meticulous adjustment or repair breathes fresh life into a cherished garment, saving it from the dreaded ‘I can't wear that’ pile.
Repair Cafe The Grove takes place every fourth Saturday of the month (excluding December) at the Grovely Mitchelton Scout Den, situated at 170 Blaker Road, Keperra. For those with items in need of repair, Repair Cafe The Grove encourages booking in advance. Make sure you bring a gold coin donation too! Local Lovebirds Celebrate 70 Years of Happy Marriage
By Georgia WrightCommitment and adventure. These are the guiding principles for local couple Elaine and Tom Cronin, who celebrate a remarkable 70-year milestone for their marriage in 2024. This couple’s life story is an inspiration to us all.
Elaine was only 14 years of age and still living in Victoria when Tom first spotted her riding her bike through Como Park. As it turned out, 17-year-old Tom was across the green, eyeing his future wife. Shortly after, a friendship between Elaine and one of Tom’s mates allowed him to muster some courage and break the ice.
Their romance bloomed and the pair began dating and the rest is history, of course, after more than seven decades of wholehearted commitment to each other!
Both Tom and Elaine worked hard at their respective professions. Tom’s lifelong occupation was in cabinetry and shop fitting, in a senior management position with a large shopfitting firm. Elaine embraced emerging technologies in her various occupations, the most fulfilling was her role as
Systems Manager with a national retailer.
The cornerstone of Elaine and Tom’s enduring relationship has been mutual interests, including sailing, snow-skiing and spending a great deal of time at the beach. With their family of three girls and one boy, they spent many years caravanning on the Victorian Coast and making coast-side memories to last lifetimes. However, after the family made a bold cross-country move to Queensland in 1988, Mooloolaba and Noosa became their family favourite locations.
Having begun their family young, Elaine and Tom were energetic parents with optimism for the future. They took on challenges and utilised their skills to achieve their goals and dreams. They built their home hands-on. Tom also built most of the furniture and cabinetry in their home, while Elaine sewed furnishings and beautifully tailored clothing for the children. Many hours went into building a Heron sailing boat, which they sailed on the Mornington Peninsular with friends. With Tom now 92-years-old and Elaine approaching her 90th birthday in April, their journey serves as an inspiration for anyone who seeks a fulfilling and lasting partnership.

Managing Weight During Perimenopause
From The Keperra Clinic
As women, we go through various transitions in life that can bring about changes in our bodies.
One such transition is perimenopause, a natural phase characterized by hormonal fluctuations. Today, let's explore some essential tips on managing weight during this phase to maintain our physical and emotional well-being.
During perimenopause, hormonal changes can impact our metabolism, making it easier to gain weight, especially around the abdomen. This weight gain can be frustrating and affect our self-esteem. However, it's crucial to remember that every woman's experience is unique, and understanding the changes happening within our bodies can empower us to take control of our health.
Several factors contribute to weight gain during perimenopause. Hormonal fluctuations play a significant role, but lifestyle choices can also influence our weight. Sedentary habits and poor dietary choices can exacerbate weight gain during this time, making it vital to adopt healthier practices.
To manage weight issues, incorporating the following lifestyle tips can make a meaningful difference:
Stay Active: Regular exercise is key. Engage in enjoyable activities like walking, biking, swimming, or attending fitness classes. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderateintensity exercise per week. Not only can this help maintain a healthy weight, but it also enhances overall well-being.
Eat a Healthy Diet: Focus on consuming a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and
healthy fats. Minimize processed foods, sugary snacks, and carbonated drinks. Be mindful of portion sizes and listen to your body's hunger and fullness cues.
Manage Stress: Chronic stress can contribute to weight gain. Find healthy coping mechanisms that work for you, such as yoga, meditation, or engaging in hobbies. Seeking support from friends, family, or professional counselors can also be beneficial during these times.
Seek Professional Guidance: Consulting with a healthcare professional specializing in hormones and weight management can provide valuable guidance. They can offer personalized advice catered to your specific needs. If necessary, they may suggest hormone therapy or other treatments that align with your weight goals.
It's crucial to understand that weight gain during perimenopause is a common experience. By adopting a proactive approach and integrating healthy lifestyle practices, you can effectively manage your weight and improve overall well-being during this phase of life.
If you need personalised guidance and support, consult a healthcare professional who can provide expert advice tailored to your needs.

10. Enjoy the journey. Make it part of your new lifestyle and enjoy what you do.
11. Sleep should be your priority. Getting adequate sleep reduces the amount of food people eat during the day and your food choices are wiser.
12. Getting adequate water is amazing for weight loss as a natural appetite suppressant and helps remove waste from your body.
A healthy resolution doesn’t need to focus on weight loss. Create a wellness resolution/goal to live a healthy, happier life on any day you decide to start.

The event served as a morale boost for dedicated volunteers who diligently showcase the museum, their source of pride. The local store exhibited a variety of items for purchase, including beloved goodies. The Workers Hut, an unconventional lodging for away-from-home groups, sparked nostalgic memories with its slab kitchen, wash house, and the evertalked-about outdoor dunny. Noteworthy displays included war memories, a railway crash, and the 1872 school, attracting enthusiastic visitors of all ages. Ned Kelly's memorabilia, notably his 10kg replica bulletproof helmet, was a hit, with children eagerly posing for photos.
The blacksmith's craftsmanship and restored machinery demonstrations in the expansive shed captivated both children and adults. A highlight was learning to play the didgeridoo, showcasing the museum's commitment to diverse experiences. The day featured popular treats like damper with melting butter, syrup, or honey, along with traditional billy tea. The volunteers, though exhausted, received appreciation for their hard work.
The Samford Museum, open on Wednesdays and Sundays from 10 am to 4 pm, welcomes groups and offers admission at $5 for adults and $1 for children. Interested volunteers can contact them at 3289 2743. Gratitude was expressed to all contributors by Bev Campbell.
Flood Event
Our community is once again facing a tough time due to recent swift flood damage, and the rebuilding process will take time. It’s a big job ahead of us, but witnessing our community come together during this challenging time is inspiring and I know we will emerge from this stronger than before.
Thank you to the many emergency services personnel and volunteers who joined to help others in need, including during the clean-up. Your efforts have been inspirational.
A busy few weeks!
The new parliamentary year started on 6 February, and I’m determined to continue to hold the Albanese Labor Government accountable for their growing list of broken promises.
I‘ve been busy visiting various areas in Dickson, participating in local events, and supporting our local businesses. The increasing cost of living is impacting Australian families and small businesses significantly. Therefore, my focus is on finding solutions that benefit both our community and country.

Samford Road Upgrades
THE FERNY REPORT
by Mark Furner M.P. State Member for Ferny GroveThe intersection upgrade on the outbound lane of Samford Road which will create a right-hand turning pocket into Glen Holm Street in Mitchelton will commence in March. Once complete, this will improve the flow of afternoon peak traffic as motorists will no-longer be held up by one or two cars waiting to turn right into Glen Holm.
Samford Road in Ferny Hills from Lomandra to Camp Mountain Road is about receive a major safety upgrade starting in February or March this year. The works will include road resurfacing, additional guardrails, shoulder widening, wide centreline treatments to reduce the potential for headon crashes, drainage improvements, green infrastructure installations and lighting and concrete islands at the Camp Mountain Road intersection.
Together these two upgrades for Samford Road represent a $25 million investment in congestion-busting and safety improvements for our community. I campaigned hard for these investments and I’m proud to see the work commencing. Both projects will be completed by early 2025 – weather permitting.
UTI Treatment at participating pharmacies
Queenslanders are now able to access advice and treatment for uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs) through their local participating community pharmacy. This represents a nation-leading expansion in access to healthcare, and it means
Congratulations to Ken and the staff of the newest Bakery & Café in our community – Little Uncle Bakery at Ferny Grove Shopping Village. Fantastic food, great coffee and excellent service!
Queenslanders won’t have to suffer the painful symptoms of a UTI while waiting for a doctor’s appointment.
School Results
Queensland has seen the highest result for Year 12 State School students since 2008. Last year 98.7 per cent of Queensland’s Year 12 State School students achieved their Certificate of Education or a Queensland Certificate of Individual Achievement. Our record investment in education is delivering for our students and for Queensland’s future economy.
Local School hall tenders announced shortly
The major upgrade to Patricks Road State School hall will get underway soon with the tender for the builder expected to be announced in March. The hall upgrade will include a new performance stage, multi-purpose arts and music spaces, storerooms, an undercroft area, a multi-purpose room and lift and stair access to the undercroft and the oval.
Oakleigh State School’s hall project has picked up again with the Education Department calling for tenders to complete the multi-purpose hall in the Ashgrove-based Primary School. Last year the Lloyd Group, who were working on the project, went into administration with the majority of the project yet to be completed. I welcome the news a new construction company will soon pick up where Lloyd left off and deliver the hall Oakleigh needs.
Both hall projects are expected to be completed by the beginning of the 2025 school year and represent another $20 million investment into our local schools – bringing the total invested in our local schools to over $80 million since I was elected in 2015. And we’re not done yet!

What’s Happening in Parliament
Last week was the first parliamentary sitting for 2024.
LNP Opposition focused their questions on the youth crime crisis and the increased electricity charges Queenslanders have been hit with.
The LNP has been pressuring the state Labor government to ensure there are consequences for criminal actions. The alleged murder at Redbank Plain shopping centre has sent shockwaves through all communities. Action must be taken now.
The independent auditor-general recently reported that
the failure at the Callide Power station nearly 3 years ago is a contributing factor to the increased electricity costs we are all experiencing. It’s imperative that the state government gets cracking in fixing this breakdown as soon as possible to help relieve the cost-of-living pressures Queenslanders are currently experiencing.
