The Mini Farm Project is now planning new farms at Loganlea State High School, in Wamuran at LuvaBerry Farm and in Coolum with Barns Lane. The Loganlea State High charity farm is almost fully funded and will be a template for schoolbased charity farms around Queensland. You can also support the MFP farm by buying produce online through their website www.minifarmbox.com.au with delivery available to all areas in Brisbane and Moreton Bay, or you can collect from the farm. There is the opportunity to ‘make your own box’ or subscribe to a fortnightly box of fresh produce. Make sure you also sign up to their newsletter, to enter the draw for a chance to win a produce box at the end of each month.
The fresh and amazing produce used at the festival is just a sample of what the Mini Farm Project grows at their Samford charity farm and each week Meals on Wheels Moreton Bay receives free produce from MFP to create healthy meals for the elderly. The Mini Farm Project is working to resolve food insecurity in Queensland, by creating a network of charity farms to grow food for those in need. The food that is grown is given freely to local charities, so that they do not have to buy fresh produce to create meals.

Last year, over 160 people attended each event—even with restrictions—so 2022 is set for a big turn out! The new store at 32 Hayward Street, Stafford will be open from 5-6pm and food trucks will be on site. Our tickets are up on Eventbrite to a cheap $25 entry, including light refreshments. We also love giving back to our community, so the foyer will again hold pop-up displays and small business community stalls (free of charge!)
Forget haute couture and the avant garde masterpieces circling your Instagram feeds; feast your eyes upon the innovative, reinvented fashion stealing the moment at our inaugural Hayward Street Style Showcase! This October 21st at 6:30pm, a catwalk will roll out in the foyer of Stafford Corps in Hayward Street, ready for a diverse team of volunteering models to strut their stuff. The event will raise money for both Brisbane disaster relief and that of developing countries. Stafford Family Store manager Mark Andrews revealed that the $5000 raised at last year’s showcase would go to the ‘Making it Happen’ project, supporting The Salvation Army Waterhole community centre in Alice Springs. The first half of the showcase will feature designs from The Salvation Army looks streetwear, then brights and bolds inspired by Sally Steele, followed by After 5 masquerade styles. The second half will feature University of Canberra and Tafe Upcycles crafted by emerging design students.

Soon-to-be Greatest Shavers Lily and Willow for the past few years. The small impact we have is worth putting towards something charitable,’ Felicity believes. But wait…There’s more!
By Georgia Wright
Felicity and Priya will be chopping their locks in September!
Two local educators from Milestones Everton Park Childcare—manager Tina Barbour and assistant manager Cheryn Hurst— will also be taking part in this event. It will be held on Sunday 9th October at 10am at the childcare centre, which is located at Tina Barbour and Cheryn Hurst 124 Rogers Parade E, Everton Park. For Tina, her inspiration is her Aunty, who passed away in 2015 from Lymphoma, which is a form of blood cancer.Tina had such a special bond with her Aunty and this is her way of honoring her. For Cheryn, knowing that 50 families get the call each day to say they or their loved one has blood cancer, is way too many. She wants to raise awareness and much needed funds to support these families. Together they feel they have a great platform to raise awareness. You can support all these lovely ladies by donating through the following ways.
It was in 1998 that the World’s Greatest Shave (WGS), the biggest fundraising effort for blood cancer to date, was born. When founder Eric Graydon—a sufferer of acute myeloid leukaemia (AML)—was diagnosed, his family went all out trying to scrape together the funds for emergency treatment. Off the back of their hard yakka and a miracle, $80 000 was raised after 200 people’s heads were shaved. Just one year later, in 1999, another WGS fundraising event raised $1.85 million from almost 2000 shaved heads! By 2013, the number 20 million was standing bright and bold behind that dollar sign. Donations, participation, awareness, and support was pooling rapidly across our beloved country. Funny how quickly a hairstyle—or lack thereof—could turn into a beacon of promise for Aussies facing blood cancer.
New Wave of World's Greatest Shavers!
Now, in 2022, Australia is celebrating 24 years of glory and over 2 million participants in the World’s Greatest Shave. Imagine the piles of cut-off hair!!
Currently, we are seeing a rise of what people call ‘the next gen’ of Shavers; our youth are beginning to rise to the challenge and rally the support of communities across Australia. Especially, our community in Brisbane. This 16th September, two local heroes Lily (12 years) of Everton Hills and Willow (12 years) of Mitchelton will take a plunge and get The Big Snip together. The two friends’ goal is to support families in our community living with blood cancer and support the Leukaemia Foundation through the WGS.
Then there are local teens Priya and Felicity from Wavell State High School have decided to fundraise for Cancer Council through World’s Greatest Shave. The girls will be donating their ponytails on the 17th September, and have already raised $300 and smashed their goal of $250!
‘My main motivation for contributing to the cause is a tribute to my cousin Kateri who’s been through leukaemia treatment Scan Donateto
Priya explains, ‘Cancer is a disease that has touched my life along with many others, with both my aunt and Grandma dying from some form of cancer.’ Felicity, too, has experienced the heartbreaking loss of loved ones due to cancer, and has always wanted to contribute to one of these organisations.

Formal night—one of the most memorable events of the high school senior year. Not to mention, an incredibly expensive night for students who go ‘all out’ and splurge on a dress or suit, even if it is just for solo use hire, plus the costs of makeup, hair, formal shoes, a clutch, the ultimate limousine grandentrance, etcetera, etcetera. To most students, the financial side of things is a headache and a half. Is it even worth the splurge? some might wonder. If you ask local mums Christine Bunn and Mel Nicol, their answer will be a definitive No. Christine has lived in Brisbane Northside for 29 years, originally finding her life’s fulfilment as a Registered Nurse. She has three children, respectively aged 20, 18, and 16, who all attended Prince of Peace Lutheran School. Christine founded three previous community services—Loaves & Fish, Meals 4 You, and Meals 4 Youth—which led to her receiving an Australia Day Lord Mayors Award. However, Christine had to leave behind her ministries 6 years ago due to Degenerative Disc Disease, which rendered her disabled. Around this time, Christine realised that with the cost of living growing exponentially, affording formal and semi formal attire was becoming out of reach for more families. Just hiring a dress or a suit alone could cost around $150-$300!
Christine approached her close friend Mel Nicol, who lived in Dirranbandi until her major move 4 years ago to the heart of Brisbane, and both ladies had a lightbulb moment. What if, for those in need, they could make the seemingly unsurmountable cost of formal night disappear? Poof, the foundations for their co-run business, Bubble & Squeak, were formed. They set about sourcing preloved and new formal and semi formal wear to giveaway ‘free’ through their new community service. Any Year 11/12 student is welcome to pop into the ladies’ studio in Stafford and rummage through their vast collections to their hearts’ desire—no questions asked! In order to remove any emotional stress from clients, all that is required from them is a Student ID. They can come get fitted for their gown or suit; Bubble & Squeak has all size outfits, women and mens’ shoes, ties, clutches, jewellery, and more. They have already sent two boxes of goods to Borroloola, Darwin, for their first youth ball, as well as 3 car loads of quality clothes to Solomon Island Community in Oakey. Between Mel and Christine, they have had 7 children attend school formals and are fiercely aware of how expensive it is. The mums wish to lessen the financial and emotional burden on families wanting their children to experience the oncein-a-lifetime event. Mel’s heart also lies in rural and remote communities that endure hardship. Christine tells, ‘We fitted our first client this week and have three next Tuesday fully booked out. Mel and I would love to see this community service reach as many students as it can. There is nothing better than supporting our community and having the ability to make a Asdifference.’always,Bubble & Squeak is welcoming any donations of women and mens’ formal wears. While Leah was thrilled to have won the award, she said it was a great opportunity to showcase what teachers do at ATCNB, ‘It’s not just an award for me, it’s an award for everyone because we all do an amazing job. The responsibility we have as teachers and trainers goes beyond just providing training.
Leah was teaching Certificate III in Business to Year 11 and 12 students when she recognised a need for additional support in the mental health and well-being space. This led her to study a Cert IV in Mental Health and then a Masters in Counselling to build her skills in this area.
As the Leading Teacher and Guidance Officer at the College, Leah was recognised for her guidance of more than 1,200 VET students across business, creative industries, workplace practices and skills for work/vocational pathways.
ATCNB College Principal, Brett Kavanagh, said the award was a testament to Leah’s commitment and passion for her role, ‘Leah has been creating a safe and supportive learning environment for students at ATCNB for 14 years, and we’re thrilled that she has been recognised for this through the Queensland Training Awards. In my 25 years of working in schools as both a teacher and school leader, I have never encountered a teacher and VET trainer that is more passionate about the long-term learning and personal wellbeing journey of her students. Leah is a most worthy candidate of the VET Trainer of the Year award category.’
ATCNB, which is part of MRAEL and the IntoWork Australia Group, is an independent school that caters for Years 11 and 12 students that integrates Queensland’s Certificate of Education (QCE), with trade training and apprenticeship services. It is based in Scarborough in a purpose built facility that includes industry standard trade workshops and

Leah has taken out the VET Teacher of the Year award at the North Coast Region Queensland Training Awards. These prestigious awards recognise individuals and organisations that strive for and have achieved success, best practice and innovation in vocational education and training (VET).
It’s ensuring our young people are supported in their wellbeing as well as their mental health.’

Leah brings this philosophy to life. She takes her time to get to know students, giving them the support to find their own pathway and pursue their career goals. Our student completion and engagement rates are higher because we have teachers that care about their wellbeing,’ Ms Zechowski said. Leah is now in the running to take out the state award at the Queensland Training Awards State Final which will be presented on 17 September.
‘I can have a bigger impact on the students other than teaching them business. I model them to have positive self-talk, positive mental health and wellbeing while teaching business at the same time.’ Leah also coaches other teachers and trainers on how to provide a safe and supportive classroom.

Despite being unable to see or feel it, it is certainly a health risk to be taken seriously. Other than high blood pressure and heart failure, high salt intake is also commonly associated with conditions such as kidney stones, uid retention, strokes and Reduceosteoporosis.your risk by making healthier choices each day, and the rst step is avoiding processed food. c/article/10-tips-to-reduce-your-plastic-use
We have talked about how we can reuse plastics, about recycling and repurposing and we have discussed using other materials instead of plastics. We have talked about the affect plastics have on our ocean wildlife and how important it is that we stop throwing it away and have implemented some wonderful ways for us to be more conscious of this. The children in both groups are writing a book which we will share with our families and community on saving the ocean. The following is some artwork the children have created to show their understanding of this massive problem. us Hills

Milo 5 explains: “There is a shark with a tail and there’s a bottle inside the shark. The kindy children invented a vacuumater to suck up the rubbish out of the shark’s mouth. The shark can now be happy and have a nice day in the water.”
Based on current research, it is believed that the volume of plastic pollution entering the ocean each year is expected to double or even triple by 2040. Unfortunately, even with the pandemic and some regions showing signs of slowing pollution, this has done little to decrease the overall pollution entering our waterways worldwide. This is going to have huge impacts on marine life, but also the future for our children. We have been working hard to achieve some small changes in our everyday life at Willmore. Some of these include running a pre-loved clothing stall as part of our fundraising this year to help promote reusable and slow fashion and reduce the impact fast fashion is having on our waterways. We have introduced several colour coded bins to help the children make the best choice about where their rubbish goes and what we can and can’t recycle. We know that when a lot of people make little changes, big things happen.

The children have shown incredible compassion and understanding around such a huge topic. While they may not fully understand just how much of a negative impact humans can have on these underwater ecosystems, the more we educate and do better now, the brighter the future looks for our children and the generations to come. We are so proud to be ocean ambassadors at Willmore Kindergarten. What can you do? This is a great article if you are wanting to explore some ways to reduce plastic in your home or school environment.
Goal 14: Life Below Water, is this year’s focus with plastics our target. At Willmore, we believe that educating the children about their world and what we can do every day to make it better is essential. This year our focus has been on plastics and the damage they are causing to our ocean life.
Aiden, 5 years explains: “The turtle is sad because there is rubbish in the ocean and plastic bags. The jellyfish is sad because its tentacles keep hitting microplastics. The jellyfish has now run out of stings and he can’t protect himself.”

Check your equity position

Sometimes the hardest part about building or renovating a home is organising the finance. And if you’ve ever done it before, you’ll know how it can be trickier than your average mortgage. Whether you’re looking to buy land and build, renovate an existing property or sell and purchase a new home, checking your financial foundations first before you start is essential!
If you have a current home loan, ask yourself “how long has it been since I checked I had the best possible product/rate”? Having a set and forget mentality with your home loan rate, especially in todays competitive rate market, is a sure fire way of missing out on potential better offers.
If you’re looking to renovate or sell and buy again, getting an idea exactly how much equity you may

Having an idea of your actual monthly outgoings is a great way to identify any areas that you may be able to cut back on or improve. Lenders these days look to rely heavily on your living expenses when assessing your affordability for a home loan. You would be surprised how that daily cup of coffee adds up over a three month period! So where does your Mortgage Broker come in?
Now that banks have all adopted comprehensive credit reporting, it is more important than ever to keep an eye on your credit score. Not only does this help you identify any potential issues upfront but also helps you monitor your score for any potential fraudulent activity. Check your expenses

Here are some top tips to getting the foundations right for your next project: Check your borrowing capacity
Ask your local mortgage broker, Scott Palazzi from Loan Market to help you with all of the above prior to the banks seeing your application. Scott has a wealth of knowledge within the industry and says knowing this information upfront helps set the foundations for your future project. In addition, Scott says this will give you the best possible chances of gaining that all important bank approval! Contact Scott today on 0413 747 283 or email scott. palazzi@loanmarket.com.au
One of the biggest mistakes people make is not knowing how much they can afford to spend before they start dreaming big. Having a realistic idea of your borrowing capacity not only helps you plan smarter and keep things within budget, but can also help you from over extending your monthly commitments.
Getting The Financial Foundations Set
Sante Medical Owner Dr Jackie Montefiore welcomes the partnership. “Now, we can offer our patients timely and affordable skin checks and treatment with highly skilled male and female skin cancer doctors five days,” Dr Montefiore said.
While many of us know how important it is to get a skin cancer check, how many of us make the time? According to Skin Patrol HQ doctors, not enough. They are urging Queenslanders to get this preventative health check done. Skin Patrol CEO Dr Alan Jones explained that two in three Australians will develop skin cancer by the time they are 70, and the earlier skin cancer is detected, the better.
“All the doctors have extensive post-graduate training, and some of them – like Dr Jones and Dr Williams – have been practising for decades in skin cancer medicine only.”
“Many people missed important health checks during the pandemic. If we can diagnose skin cancer early and when it is small, it is much easier and safer to treat. But, because skin cancer is common, some people assume they can wait to see a doctor, Dr Jones said.
Comprehensive skin checks and treatment by female and male doctors
Skin Patrol is a leader in workplace skin cancer screening, delivering thousands of skin checks across Australia each year. With a growing team of doctors at their Brisbane HQ, Skin Patrol has joined forces with GP practice, Sante Medical, to make skin checks and treatment more accessible for locals here.
“Some female patients prefer to see a female doctor for a full-body skin check, and they can see Dr Tiffany Litvine or me. We can also offer advice about restoring damaged skin, preventing skin cancer and enhancing your appearance,” she said. To book a skin check now, call 1800 103 074 or visit www. skinpatrol.com.au

• Headaches: Coughing can trigger a headache caused by straining, sneezing and blowing your nose. So how can a Chiropractor help?
• Diaphragm strain: During a bought of prolonged coughing your diaphragm has to work overtime which can cause tightness under the ribcage and a feeling you can’t take a full breath.
Chiropractors are musculoskeletal therapists meaning we assess and treat the spine, muscles and surrounding tissues. A chiropractor finds areas of the body that are not moving and aims to adjust and release these to restore normal function. After a coughing injury this may be a spinal or rib adjustment, diaphragm release and soft tissue therapy to tight muscles and tissue.
A cough is your body’s natural defence mechanism to protect the respiratory tract and clear foreign particles from the lungs and throat. So, when does coughing become a Prolongedproblem?coughing can cause a range of pain and injuries including:
• Muscle strain: A cough can be forceful enough to cause a strain of muscles in the back, intercostal muscles (ribcage), neck and abdominals.
• Lower back pain: the force of a cough can exacerbate or cause a disc injury.
• Rib pain: This can be a sharp stabbing pain on inhalation causes by irritation to the joint or nerve.
It seems like everyone is either sick or suffering from the after effects of being unwell this winter. Here at Function. allied Health we have seen a huge increase in patients presenting with coughing related injuries. Did you know that a cough or a sneeze can have a speed of up to 80km per hour?! Your body has to withstand a huge amount of force by contracting and bracing the spine, ribcage and surrounding muscles.

Has Coughing Become A Pain In The Back?
• Chest pain: Coughing uses muscles in the chest and abdomen. Extended periods of coughing can leave the muscles feeling sore and fatigued
At Function Allied Health we are passionate about helping our patients get back to feeling and functioning their best. If you or a loved one are recovering from a cough and are experiencing pain, we are here to help. By Georgia Wright
Eadie Kendell with Echo News Journalist Georgia Wright at Function.all Pilates studio their own standards. There are three main types of workouts offered at Function.all; Shape, which is a low-impact toning class; Energy, which involves more cardio and challenging movements; and Foundations, the class that focuses most on form and conditioning. The latter is the perfect place for beginners (like me) to start, as this is where the breathwork and mind-muscle connection is established, alongside the key components of Pilatesstyle workouts. I found shape to be quite challenging especially, considering the low-impact, as it forced my body to pretzel into shapes and motions using a sort of balance I’d never considered prior. However, it was the Energy class that left me sweating and reeling in utter Allexhaustion.thepainwas worth it, of course, because I had gained a sense of bodily control and grace previously unknown. And so it was made official: I, a gym junkie, now had the art of Reformer Pilates up my sleeve thanks to Function. all. To my wonderful instructors, I am sure to return soon!
As a low-impact, total body workout that focuses on improving flexibility and strengthening muscles through controlled, repetitive motions, Pilates puts a whole new strain on your body. You train as an integrated whole—not just as compounded muscle groups—while focusing on core, posture, and upper/lower body strength. One of the most important learnings of Pilates is using breath and mind-muscle connection to ‘feel the burn’. It took me a hot minute to grasp the concept, but now my approach to exercise is forever altered. At Function.all, they incorporate reformer machines, which add on more resistance than typical body weight, ultimately making your muscles work harder. Instructors work closely with participants and tailor to their needs, making sure that everyone is working hard enough at
The Hills Echo, September 2022 - Page 29www.echo-news.com.au
When I used to think about growing muscle and training my core, my mind flicked to the gym. To lifting weights. To high impact HIIT classes or sunrise sprints. Never did I expect to find my glutes screaming in protest and my abdomen shaking during a Pilates class. After seeing a rising trend on social media of gym-junkie females turning to Pilates for extra burn, I decided it was time to experiment with the foreign form of exercise. With a ‘don’t knock it till you try it’ attitude, I booked myself and a fellow gym-junkie friend into a 3-class trial run at Function.all Pilates in Ferny Hills. We arrived not knowing what to expect, and ended up leaving feeling very humbled, and very sore.

“Pilates allows me to focus on getting my mental health in the same shape as my physical health.”
Here are just three ways that Pilates has can improve mental health. Breath is one of the most powerful tools in calming the mind and it is utilised in a wide range of mental health practices. Every Pilates exercise involves a breathing pattern which improves the effectiveness of the exercise, helps supply oxygen to the muscles, and prevents you from holding your breath. “When I am focussed on my breath, I am not focused on the afternoon schedule of picking up the kids!” Nicole, Everton Park franchisee. Pilates is also used widely to reduce and cope with stress, as exercise can increase endorphins, your body’s ‘feel-good’ chemicals. Melinda, Arana Hills franchisee, says “Pilates is where I go to escape a stressful day. As soon as I hit the reformer, I forget about everything else and focus on me.”
Since its creation in the 1920’s, Pilates has been used around the world to increase muscle strength and tone, improve flexibility and posture, and lose weight. However, more research is suggesting that Pilates also has a wide range of mental health benefits. Candyce, Strathpine franchisee, loves her Pilates and tells us that Pilates can benefit the body and mind.

Our guest speaker at our October meeting will be Tom Law. Tom is a Physical Fitness Trainer and might be what we need to be ready for the Christmas Festivities. We have held our spring fashion parade at the September Meeting. Fashions were by Portofino. What a wonderful day with lots of members and visitors present and some lovely fashions modelled by some of our members. Looking forward to seeing everyone’s purchases at coming meetings.

As mentioned in our May column the construction of the bridge from Ellendale, in Upper Kedron, across Cedar Creek to Rosella Street and the corner of Levitt Road and Minnie Street, Upper Kedron is well underway. The Development Application (DA) also allows for improvements to Levitt Road and Minnie Street. Once complete, the bridge will provide another exit from Ellendale to the Ferny Grove shops, schools, train station and city. It also creates options for public transport access to more Minnieresidents.Street is well known as more of a ‘narrow bend’ and our association has been a long-term advocate for it to be widened or straightened, to align with Rosella Street at Levitt Road. We believe this would make it safer for traffic and easier for the bus service to come over the bridge from Ellendale, into Rosella Street, across Levitt Road and along Minnie Street onto Cedar Creek Road. To align Minnie Street with Rosella Street would require access to land currently held by the Queensland Government, for the Samford Valley Bypass Corridor. Whilst the current DA only provides for a slight widening of Minnie Street because of our advocacy with the State Member of Parliament, Mark Furner and Brisbane City Council, Councillor Steven Toomey, both representatives recently met on site to discuss options. Councillor Toomey has now secured funding in the BCC Budget to design the realignment of Minnie Street.

An update from the Ferny Grove & Upper Kedron Residents Association An update from the Arana VIEW Club Arana VIEW Club’s next meeting is on Wednesday 5th October. We meet at the Arana Leagues Club, Dawson Parade Keperra, 10.30am for 11am start. Cost is $30 and includes a two course lunch with tea and coffee and we will have our usual lucky door prizes and raffles to support our Learning for Life students through the Smith Family.
It’s fair to say that any ‘land swap’ between State and Local government will have complicated legal and financial hurdles to cross but nonetheless it is heartening to see community, government and council representatives working together to make better longterm decisions for our suburbs. Both Mark Furner and Steven Toomey are to be congratulated for their efforts. Our Association has approached Cr Toomey to offer our support with any community consultation that may be required as part of BCC’s review of design options for Minnie FGUKRAStreet.researches and advocates for residents to all levels of government on local issues. Dr Tom Bancroft History in Eidsvold in the Burnett region. Near the tannery on Kedron Brook, a Mr Simpson ran a knackery. When building his own home, he removed and relocated the Bancroft house, to land which became known as Royal Parade Estate. This is in the vicinity of present-day Royal Parade, Alderley. Bancroft Park, Kelvin Grove is named after Dr Tom Bancroft’s father, Joseph – another earlier settler in Northwest Brisbane. Keep those stories coming in! Visit the Enoggera Memorial Hall any Thursday morning between 9.30am and 1pm or visit our Facebook page. Take care, everyone. Andrew McMicking, President
The Enoggera & Districts Historical Society Inc. (EDHS) welcomes continuing contributions made by local residents with stories and identities of our region, from years gone by. This month, we relay some information about Dr Tom Bancroft and his tannery. During the Boer War, Dr Bancroft was based at Deception Bay and had a contract to supply the Australian Government with tinned meat for soldiers. In 1906 he moved to the Alderley-Enoggera area and lived in a house at the present day location bordered by Street and South Pine Road. He started a long-running tannery nearby. While the tannery continued its operations, Dr Bancroft also pursued government medical work, the collection of natural science specimens and photography. In later life he lived for a while on the Atherton Tablelands before eventually settling

Well, it was thanks to a group of more than 40 farmers from the Samford and South Pine River Mountain Camp, who petitioned the Honourable Board of Education for Queensland in October 1872 for a school to service their local area. Thanks to these earnest men who were successful in their petition, Samford was blessed with its own school. In September 1873, the first recorded school committee members were Mr John Coonan, Chairman; Mr James Wight, Secretary; Mr Thomas Richards, Collector for Forms; and Mr Henry Payne, Treasurer and local patron. Mr Walter Hore was the teacher for the first six years. The school was then constructed by the local farmers, who also provided the materials that were cut by hand from the forest. To celebrate its 150th anniversary, the Samford State School will hold a celebration at the school (School Road, Samford) on September 10th, 10am to 7pm. This exciting event will include stage entertainment, carnival rides, market stalls, class reunions and a bonfire. There will also be food and drinks available. Furthermore, Martin the Samford Museum’s Blacksmith, will provide an outdoor display of cold work which will be complimented with a display of historical information indoors. Other notable events of 1872: The completion by Charles Todd, of the Overland Telegraph Line from Adelaide to Darwin, making direct telegraphic communication with Europe. Dickson Seniors Expo
The Seniors Expo was a tremendous success, with over 1200 visitors and 80 stalls. I’d like to thank all the members of the Dickson Seniors Council for their tireless work in organising the event and congratulate them on continuing to make the Expo bigger and better with each year. I started the Dickson Seniors Expo in 2004 with the help of the Dickson Seniors Council, to support seniors in our local community. Every year since I have been proud to host and sponsor the event. Backing small businesses I’m regularly out and about in Dickson talking to small businesses about the issues that matter to them and offering my help in any way possible. I want to see more local business opportunities created in our community,so more people will have jobs. Recently I had the pleasure of visiting Hamish and Jacqui Perera at Jubilee Energy in Brendale, to tour their premises and workshops, meet their employees and discuss their current energy products. If you would like me to visit your business, please get in touch via email – contact details are below.

Vietnam Veterans’ Day - thank you for your service August 18th was Vietnam Veterans’ Day, marking the anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan in 1966 and we pay tribute to the 521 Australians who lost their lives in the line of duty and the more than 3,000 who were wounded. Between 1962 and 1972 almost 60,000 Australians served in the conflict and we pay our respects to those veterans still with us, many of whom continue to bear the wounds seen and unseen. We must never repeat the mistakes of our past by disrespecting and mistreating the men and women who proudly wear the uniform in defence of our values and country. It’s been a really busy few months since becoming the Liberal leader and I’m proud to be the first Queenslander to lead the Liberal Party since it was formed 77 years ago. Together with my Coalition team, we’ll back small businesses and support families dealing with increased cost of living pressures, while holding the Albanese Labor government to account on their promises to Australians and support outcomes in the best interests of our country and community. The only people who pay the price for a broken promise are families and small businesses.

The rule is simple – if you see any flashing lights at the roadside, move over and slow down. The new rule applies to ambulances, police cars, fire trucks, and transport enforcement vehicles, as well as breakdown assistance providers such as RACQ, tow trucks and assistance vehicles. These rules are aimed at improving our first responders’ ability to get to where they need to and keeping them safe on the roadside so they can help us when we most need them. Instead of hosting a guest speaker on October 6th, their meeting will take a slightly different format. A guest speaker has not been engaged, instead those present will participate in a ‘Questions and Answers’ session. Those attending are requested to have a gardening question ready, with a specimen if needed, so someone in the audience may respond with an answer. If a question cannot be answered, then a technical device will provide the solution.

An update from the Hills Organic Community Garden
It certainly has been quite a cold winter - but no complaints. We have had a nice amount of rain over the cooler months and, of course, the cooler temperatures make gardening that much more enjoyable. Our members have been turning up each Sunday enthusiastic and ready to work. There has also been the rewarding task of picking quite a nice amount of produce at the end of the day to share amongst the members. We picked a lovely amount of ginger last weekend so we will enjoy some of this fresh produce in our stir-fries.
The snow peas are flowering and will be producing soon and our beetroot is almost ready for pickling. We have started enjoying the cabbages and silverbeet along with the strawberries are just starting to produce fruit. We have had to cover the strawberries as our resident magpie was taking bites out of the fruit. A scrub turkey has also made its presence felt at the garden. Not really a welcome visitor as they can be quite destructive! A new garden bed has just been made up and when the fertilizer and compost has had time to do its job, planting the potatoes will Springcommence.isjustaround the corner and hopefully we have a few more months of pleasant weather for gardening before the heat of summer sets in. The flowering basil is still attracting the bees and we should be able to harvest some seeds when the plant dries. Our parsley is also looking very healthy.
Our meeting takes place at the Enoggera Memorial Hall at 36 Trundle Street, Enoggera. The hall is close to public transport and accessible by wheelchair. Meetings commence after morning tea which is served at 9.45 am. Visitors and new members are most welcome. For more information, please phone the president, Pat, on 3356 1256. Garden Tips Spring began this month (September) and this means there‘s a lot to do in the garden. Shrubs and plants need extra nutrition. If sprinkling fertiliser on the garden, always make sure that the soil is moist and then water in the fertiliser well. Take care with fertilisers containing phosphorus and keep it away from any natives. It‘s time to prune poinsettia, however, please remember to avoid getting any of the sap on your skin. Cuttings will propagate easily at this time of year, just make them into lengths of about 20 cm. Cut straight across the stem at the end to go in the ground and make a diagonal cut at the other end. Wait a couple of weeks to let a scab form over the cuts before planting the cuttings. Also, look out for orchids coming into full bloom around this time of year. It is a good idea to attend a local orchid show, to gain as much knowledge (and new plants!) as possible.

When someone is in so much emotional pain, they feel the only option for them is to take their own life, there is a saying “suicide doesn’t take the pain away; it passes it onto someone else”. When a public figure takes their own life, there is a lot of talk about the subject in the media and the family and friends they have left behind, who will need to figure out how to move forward without them. I’m sure most of us have been touched in some way by someone who has taken their own life, or perhaps have even considered it themselves at a difficult time.
This article is brought to you by Social Worker, Elena Bishop. Elena is the director of Supportive Therapy and Social Work in Arana Hills. She has a wealth of knowledge and insight into the industry and takes about the difficult subject of suicide.
Can we, for a moment talk about a difficult subject?
Counselling Corner Passing the Pain when they leave?
When someone is under so much emotional turmoil and stress, the pain of being in their own skin can be unbearable. If we haven’t learnt coping mechanisms to manage depression or anxiety, everything can seem to just pile up internally, this can lead to psychological burnout and fatigue. Traditionally men have been conditioned in our society to ignore emotional pain, to ‘suck it up’, ‘man up’, ‘don’t whinge’, this means we have never learnt that it is acceptable to be vulnerable and talk about uncomfortable emotions. This can go together with toxic positivity; ‘just think positive’, ‘she’ll be right’. This could make us think that anything other than positivity or happiness is uncomfortable or an inconvenience. When someone is opening up about their pain or struggles, it’s so difficult to hear, we just want to fix it and tell them not to worry. The trifecta to this, is minimising our own experiences and our feelings, and thinking, ‘Other people have it worse than I do, so why am I so ungrateful and complaining?’
Sometimes, when a person makes the decision to end their own life, they can feel peace and at ease. Others may assume they magically ‘got better’, but a further warning sign is if a person starts giving away all their special possessions or even arrange a will.
Do you know that if you text 0477 13 11 14 between 6pm - midnight when you are in need of support, a trained Lifeline crisis support worker will text with you? So if you are feeling overwhelmed or having difficulty coping, please drop them a text. They listen without judgement and provide a safe space to discuss your needs, worries or concerns. They will also work with you to explore options for support.
When the warning signs are there, we can get very overwhelmed because we don’t know what to do to help. We are all human; we are social and need to feel connected with others. It can be agonising to sit with a loved one in so much pain and we feel powerless to help take that pain away. So, be brave and asking them directly, have you been thinking of suicide lately? Sitting with them in their pain if they decide to speak with you, sitting patiently and listening, as opposed to immediately giving them suggestions to fix it, or to make it go away. Be honest, if you feel that you are overwhelmed and don’t know what you can say to help, let them know and they may have suggestions on what they need from you. Encourage them to speak to a professional they trust. If they have already seen someone but they didn’t like them, tell them to keep looking to find someone else who can support them emotionally.
Some warning signs for severe depression are, feeling like a burden, feeling broken, feeling that you can’t be bothered anymore and what’s the point. These can lead to feelings of unbearable pain and sadness. Sometimes people can feel increased anxiety, anger or irritability towards others, but it’s because they are depressed and frustrated within themselves.
I have the lived with the experience of wanting to end my own life and have had several friends who choose to end it all. I have volunteered for Lifeline Telephone Counselling for years. Call Lifeline if you or a friend needs help on 13 11 14. We need to inspire and empower each other! Learning about the cycle of anxiety and how to stop our inner saboteur and educating ourselves about happiness and purpose. Resolving past traumas that may be retriggering could help. We all get one life. We may die once, but we live every day. Make your life something special to you. Find beauty in the small things. Feel grateful for those supportive people in our life. Help others and make them feel special. Look after yourself without guilt. Find more pleasure. Do not give up on yourself, I believe in you.
