New High Rise Proposed
An artist’s impression of the proposed building
Location of the proposed development
A Development Application has been lodged with Brisbane City Council for a commercial and residential building, four stories in height, at 1312 Samford Road, Ferny Grove.
The proposal seeks a commercial building to accommodate a range of activities including retail, office and multiple dwellings. The site, next to BP service station, has been vacant for many years since the demise of Bob Cassimaty’s general store. The ground floor will comprise 18 car parking spaces and two commercial premises. There will also be internal stairs and a lift. The first and second floors will have commercial offices while the third floor will feature three units – one two-bedroom unit and two three-bedroom units. The planners responsible for the concept stated ‘It is considered that the proposed development will set a high standard of architectural presentation for the area, and complement the type of built form that will emerge as part of the nearby TOD development of the Ferny Grove train station. These developments will create more activity in the area and over time set the standard that the redevelopment of other centre zoned land will be able to reflect over time.’ This will be the first high rise building in the local area and perhaps signifies the future development style close to travel, shopping and professional amenities.

New Chef Ready and Waiting
The Grove Sports Club are delighted to announce the arrival of new caterers Helen and Peter Hempsall who bring a wealth of quality experience in the hospitality industry.
Having previously operated Topiaries Wedding & Event Venue in Samford, Helen and Peter are both ‘hands on” operators. While delighted to meet and greet diners, Helen leaves much of the front house operation to Peter. Her domain is the kitchen where she is already busily working to familiarise herself with new surroundings. Helen and Peter have owned and operated many catering businesses and they are excited at the prospect of building a loyal following at Ferny Grove. ‘We offer affordable dining at reasonable prices with a warm and welcome atmosphere,’ explained Peter. ‘Families are very welcome and we want diners to have fun, relax and enjoy!’ Weekly specialty nights are currently on Wednesday (Schnitzel night $10) and Thursday nights (Seafood Baskets only $12.50). This will be expanded to other nights as well. Chalk Board Specials will change regularly and there is a Dessert Menu for diners who wish to finish their meal with a delicious sweet treat. Still a work in progress is an exciting new menu with options including Gluten Free and Vegetarian. Currently dining is available at the club from Wednesday to Friday but in February it will include Tuesday too. Helen and Peter have experience in catering for small and large functions including weddings with 100 or more guests. If you are planning a function, phone the club 93851 1889) and make an appointment to discuss your requirements. Peter and Helen will focus on all details prior to the event ensuring a smooth operation of your special occasion that you can remember and enjoy. ‘We look forward to becoming part of this local community,’ said Helen. ‘We would like to be involved and committed to the club and to provide members and guests an enjoyable experience when visiting.’

Major road and green infrastructure project ahead
Moreton Bay Regional Council will invest more than $1.35million in road upgrades at the intersection of Jinker Track and Bunya Road following the appointment of a successful tenderer at a recent Council Coordination Committee Meeting.
Councillor for Division 10, Matt Constance welcomed the decision to appoint Alder Constructions Pty Ltd to the job, with the project starting in the New Year. This project that will see the intersection signalised, pavement and drainage improvements, new footpath, line markings, road signs, landscaping and green infrastructure including fauna exclusion fencing and a fauna bridge to ensure the safe movement of wildlife at the intersection. ‘Once complete, the project will not only improve road safety but it will also make it easier for visitors and locals to access sporting fields at James Drysdale Reserve, the Arana Hills SES depot, the nearby waste facility and the stunning Bunyaville Conservation Park, which attracts many visitors each year.’ Cr Constance said. As part of the project, approximately 135 metres of fencing will be installed along Bunya Road, at the interface of Bunyaville Conservation Park, to protect native birds, koalas, echidnas, wallabies and possums, with a fauna overbridge to allow safe passage of tree dwelling fauna travelling between green corridors either side of The Jinker Track. Works will commence in January and take approximately 15 weeks to complete, weather permitting.

Did you receive a Drone for Christmas but have no idea where to fly it?
Brisbane City Council has launched a six-month trial for people to use drones weighing up to 2kg in ten parks across the city. One of these parks can be found locally at Keperra Picnic Grounds, Tramway Street, Ferny Grove. Drones up to 500g, flying less than 15km/h, could previously be flown without consent but drones heavier than that have always required a permit when flown on council land. The sixth month trial – the first of its kind in Australia – began in mid December. A council spokesperson said the trial would be re-evaluated after six months to determine whether it should be continued permanently. Pilots must follow existing Civil Aviation Safety Authority rules. Any breaches of CASA rules for flying from or over a council park are enforceable by CASA, the council said. For more information regarding guidelines for flying drones visit www.casa.gov.au/modelaircraft

New year, new careers for Hills’ mums
The start of a new year is a time when many people look for a new job, sign up for some additional study or set new career goals.
Donna Thistlewaite writing congratulations cards to clients
Page 18 - January 2018, The Hills Echo
But getting back into paid employment after taking a career break to have children can be a tough ask for lots of mums. Professional career coach, Donna Thistlethwaite, says that many mums just don’t know where to start when it comes to getting back into the workforce. Based at Everton Park, Donna runs ‘CareerSmart Mums’, a hands-on workshop helping return-to-work mums with career direction, as well as giving them practical help to update their resume and brush up on job interview skills. ‘We see lots of mums from all different career backgrounds, but once they’ve had a family and been out of the workforce for a while, it’s a common challenge to find a rewarding job that also is flexible enough to fit in with family life,’ Donna says. ‘We’ve helped mums access their dream jobs either by tapping into their existing networks, starting up their own businesses, or giving them the skills they need to negotiate flexible working conditions.’ Lee Martin, owner of local business Style Your Way, is a CareerSmart Mums graduate who says the workshop and Donna’s ongoing support were instrumental to her success. The CareerSmart Mums workshop runs four times per year, however it has been so popular that Donna is about to launch an on-line version Courtesy Vehicle Available! of the course. ‘On-line learning is so convenient when you have a family.’ Donna says. ‘The on-line workshop is a way for us to make it really easy for women to access the workshop at a time that suits NOW OPEN them – mums can be working 1st Saturday of every month towards their career goals while the kids are tucked up in bed!’ Donna will also kick off the year for job-seeking mums with a half-day goal-setting mini-workshop to be held on 30 January. For more information, or to sign on for the workshops, visit www.careersmartmums. com.au. You check out www.facebook.com.au/ careersmartmums. www.hillsecho.com

A Class For Everyone!
Active Arts Australia was started at Ferny Hills Gymnastics in 2017 and has now grown to facilitate over 300 students.
In August 2017, they opened up their second venue in Enoggera. The Enoggera location is a purpose built facility boasting a fully equipped gymnastics centre and 2 dance studios enabling their growing dance program to include all dance styles in 2018. Active Arts Australia believe in incorporating all aspects of active arts encouraging children to train in multiple disciplines throughout their childhood years. With classes in tumbling, acrobatics, acrodance, gymnastics, jazz, lyrical, tap, ballet, hip hop, ninja and tricking their centres give children the opportunity to train in an array of differing disciplines without having to enroll with multiple organisations. Having the ability for their students to transition between classes on offer is their greatest strength. Parents are busy these days and by creating an environment where children get access to a multitude of classes saves parents time and money.
Active Arts Australia has classes for everyone. From parent and child programs that start from 2 years of age to ninja and tricking which is popular with the boys to a comprehensive dance program all the way through to their competitive gymnastics and acrobatics groups. Active Arts Australia have something for every child regardless of age or ability and getting your child active has never been easier with a online enrolment and part payment. Check out their website at www.activeartsaustralia.com.au for a timetable or information pack for either our Ferny Hills or Enoggera locations.

Low Cost and Free Native Plants Locally
If you’re looking for a low-maintenance garden and want to improve the lives of local wildlife, maybe it’s time to consider native plants in your garden planning. Why choose native plants?
There are huge benefits when including native plants in your garden. They are hardy plants that are easy to grow and can be easily maintained. They also require less water than other plant types which is necessary for Australian conditions. Native plants also provide food and shelter for local wildlife. Your kids will be excited to see the birds, lizards and butterflies your new plants bring to the garden. Our local councils have done the hard work for you and found the best native plants that have adapted to local conditions. This means they will thrive with just a little bit of love and care.
Brisbane City Council
Brisbane City Council offers free native plants to residents and community groups. Their website has a comprehensive list of plants available with descriptions and growing requirements, so you can find the best type for your garden. They also list the wildlife each plant might attract. You can find your free native plants at a variety of locations. The closest to our area is the Paten Park Native Nursery, 57 Paten Road, The Gap. More information can also be found on their website www.patenparknativenursery.org.au For more details regarding other nurseries participating in the Free Native Plants Program head to council’s website www. brisbane.qld.gov.au/environment-waste/be-clean-greenbrisbane/green-homes/sustainable-gardening/free-nativeplants-program

Happy New Year!
I would like to wish all Dickson residents a very Happy New Year. This time of the year is one for reflecting on the year just past and excitement with planning for the year ahead. 2017 was a year full of challenges, trials and successes and the year ahead looks to be another busy year here in Dickson. I wish all residents the very best for the coming months and year and, as always, if there is anything I can do to assist you please contact my office on 3205 9977.
Australia Day in Dickson
Each year Australia Day celebrations continue to grow in Dickson and it is fantastic to see the community spirit and pride in our local area on display. We celebrate not only our unique culture but also the opportunities afforded to us all as Australians. It is only through the hard work and dedication of all citizens that we can enjoy a day under the hot Australian sun to appreciate what is truly a ‘land of opportunity’. Australia Day also provides us with the chance to teach others about our great country and the legacies we proudly uphold. I am once again hosting my annual Australia Day Community Awards in conjunction with the Citizenship Ceremony at Samford. As the Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for Immigration and Border Protection, it’s particularly special for me to able to welcome new citizens and acknowledge some of our local heroes who go above and beyond to serve our community here in Dickson.
I wish everyone a safe and happy Australia Day and I hope to see you at one of the ceremonies on the day.
Summer Safety tips
Summer is in full swing and many of us are making the most of the good weather by going swimming and spending time outdoors. It is a great time to get out and be active, but it is also important to remember to protect yourself and your loved ones from sun damage. Here are some simple safety tips to help you be sun smart this summer: • Reapply SPF 15+ regularly when in the sun • Wear a broad brim hat to protect shoulders • Stick to shaded areas • Drink plenty of water

Counsellor’s Column with Robin Botic
Dear Robin, I've been with my partner for about five years. It was one of those madly-in-love, couldn't-believe-how-I-felt, couldn'tbe-apart-from-each-other type starts. Well I really do love James but he really frustrates. I was told by a psychic that I went to see about a year into the relationship that he was my soul mate and the person I was meant to be with. It was really lovely to have that affirmation. My confusion is this: surely if he's my "perfect" partner, things should be easier. Surely we shouldn't fight so much. Neiher of us wants to give in and our issues never seem to get resolved. I don't know whether this is a good environment for me to consider bringing children in to. Things should be more idyllic if he's my perfect one. I don't want to leave him. I would just like it to be easier. How do I go about making that happen? Jan. Dear Jan, Seems you're asking two questions here. What exactly constitutes perfection is number one, and question two, which in part has its roots in one: how do I make things easier? We will deal with number one first, and what that implies. We all want to have the perfect partner, and the ideal which you share with many is that this person, this soul mate, should make life blissful, or at least easy for you. This is not necessarily true. In any relationship there should be challenging times that when resolved, produce growth. From my experience this is what relationship is about. Love is a sugar-coated pill that holds you together while the medicine for growth goes down. Why else would we stay and try to confront and resolve these difficulties except that we love and wish to stay with the beloved? It's life, the universe's catch-22 of black humour that we humans are stuck with. Your perfect partner is not just the one that loves, supports and ticks a lot of your boxes. They are also the one who challenges you to face yourself and grow. Out of this comes number two. In what way are you being challenged? What is it you are both being faced with, through the other? Ask yourself: Why do I need to be right? What's that about for me? Is it about the old dilemma of: I need to have him agree so there are no differences and I will feel safer in the relationship. This is because I won't have to be challenged by his differences and risk rejection and possible loss. The paradox is that the opposite is true.
Inability to discuss, allow and accept difference is what causes the problem. There should be differences. Often the complement of the two differences creates a more unified range of options that enable you to deal with life more successfully. For example, someone who is single-minded working with someone who is able to multi-task, when both those abilities are used together, gives a new dimension of cope-ability and support. The other possible cause of our need to be right, and which I've spoken about before, is the belief that if my opinions, ideas etc. are ‘right’, and therefore should be accepted, I am an okay and acceptable or ‘right’ person. Our value as a person is based on far more than the opinions, ideas of positions we hold. These can change and do in life, but our intrinsic essence and our ability to manifest and expand on this, does not. What are you really arguing about? Have an agreement, when you are responsive to each other, that the next time you see a difference about to erupt, that you try listening to understand the other, not to be right. When it is your turn to express your opinion, start by watching your breath. See that it is calm. Check your posture, try to relax and empty your mind to listen to what is being said. Our usual ploy is that before the other gets two sentences out, we have a thousand answering thoughts in our own head, and our main interest is in getting that heard. Our partner is doing the same, and neither is really listening to understand or to resolve the issue. How lasting is the importance of thinking you have won what often is a silly argument? What you need to do is to keep exploring the levels of the feelings that are being challenged within you. These feelings are the REAL subjects of discussion, and what is needed to be addressed by both of you. Often you will find that although there is a superficial difference, the feeling-based thought below is the same, i.e. a fear of rejection or loss of respect, value etc. There's an old saying: Is it better to be ‘right’ or LOVED? Robin
