Keperra Quarry to Local Lions fundraise be transformed into for Bush Fire Appeal residential community A new masterplanned residential community could soon be coming to Keperra with the acquisition of a former quarry site by Frasers Property Australia.

The 48.7 hectare site settled for $31 million and has an estimated gross domestic value of $234 million. Following a community engagement program the site has approval for the development of a master planned residential community, with up to 700 homes to be built. Homes will consist of a combination of detached, low density and medium density terrace homes. It is estimated that 60 per cent of the 48.7 hectare site will be open green space. The site, currently a quarry, is one of the most elevated areas of land in Brisbane, ranging from 80 to 190 metres above sea level, which general manager of Residential Queensland at Frasers Property, Scott Ullman says will result in some spectacular views. ‘The design for the master planned community is still being refined however most of the residential dwellings will be built between 100 and 145 metres above sea level. This will create some spectacular views to the Glasshouse Mountains,’ said Mr. Ullman. In addition to the residential dwellings, parks, and conservation areas, a 7,000sqm neighbourhood retail and childcare centre is also planned for the development. Frasers hopes to launch the design of the new community in 2021.

As we go to press, we watch in horror as the catastrophic bushfires continue to wipe out communities, claim lives, destroy property and kill wildlife.

Many local businesses and community organisations within our district are rallying around to raise urgent funds for charities associated with the Bushfires and our local Lions Club is no different. On Saturday 8th February put your thinking cap on as the Golden Valley Keperra Lions host a fun filled night of Trivia at the Arana Hills Community Centre on Dawson Parade. All proceeds from the Trivia Night will be donated to the Bushfire Appeal and you can be guaranteed to enjoy and evening filled with laughter! In addition, great raffle prizes and lucky door prizes are up for grabs. The night kicks off at 6.30pm for a 7pm start. Individual tickets are $15 or you can book a table of eight for $80. To keep the brain cells hydrated and fuelled up there is the option to BringYour-Own drinks and nibbles for your table. Alternatively, a light supper, tea and coffee will also be provided. To book call Paul on 0409 688 675 or Zarina on 0416 073 080.

The park upgrades include; construction of a half basketball court, picnic settings, drinking fountains, all new soft fall surfacing and two new shade sails. Among the improvements will also be a new $240,000 amenities block that will increase the number of cubicles and provide an accessibility compliant toilet. The amenities building has been designed to reduce maintenance, vandalism and cleaning costs. There is also a separate project underway to install smart technology within the amenities block. This will provide the capacity for remote opening and closing of the facility, as well as the ability to report on water usage and potential damage to the block. Works will commence in February with the playground and half basketball court set to be completed by late July 2020, weather permitting. The playground will be closed during this period for safety reasons and some car parking space may be impacted.

Rocket launch at Ferny Grove sets a STEM spectacle

The students had the chance to not only push the button to countdown but had the opportunity to take the motor apart and examine the parts in detail. The launch itself was incredibly noisy and students were amazed that everything is remote-controlled via a laptop and encoded with Arduino. The event was facilitated by STEM teachers Britt Cleary and Dr Mertens-Walker who secured PFI as a partner company for the inception of the STEM program at Ferny Grove State High School in 2020.

Future STEM students ready for the countdown with STEM teachers Britt Cleary and Dr Mertens-Walker

There were exciting times had at Ferny Grove State High School last month when future STEM students took part in firing a rocket hybrid motor on the oval.

Nick Green from PFI (Products for Industries) brought his authentic rocket motor to the school and explained how this piece of technology will shape Australia's future job opportunities from Rocket Technicians to Space Engineers. In a Queensland first, this ‘Rocket in a suitcase’ is a learning instrument that will help students gain an understanding and confidence in technologies that are used in the Aerospace industry.

Club member, John Nedwich digging for petrified wood at Chinchilla

In the coming year, the Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club hopes to organise several fossicking trips for collecting various materials which members can cut and polish in the club's workshop. Some of these trips are overnight to such places as Chinchilla, Murgon and Warwick to maximise the time for fossicking. There are only a few single day trips which the club organises, these are to Redcliffe, Kenilworth and the Tweed Valley. Trips to the Tweed Valley are dependent on the Tweed River system as floods can turn over the gravels where chalcedony and agates are found. Any pieces of material lying on the gravels are soon collected by keen rockhounds. To participate in these trips people need to be a club member as the accident insurance policy the club holds only covers members. The Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club has its rooms located at 46 Ferneydell Street, Ashgrove and is open every Thursday from 9am to noon for cutting and polishing rocks and from 12 noon to 3pm for silverwork. It is also open on Saturday from 1pm to 4pm. The club caters for rock enthusiasts in the North Western area of Brisbane. Visitors and new members are most welcome and if you would like more information about the club please phone John on 3351 1038 or Lloyd on 3351 2093.

Funds needed to complete construction of orphanage

Mitchelton Rotary are proud to be hosting their annual fundraising dinner and silent auction for the Umoja Ophanage in Kenya on the 15th February at the Arana Leagues Club.

Last year this event aimed to boost funds to ‘raise the roof’ on the second children’s home at Umoja called ‘Sinnamon House’, which was named in honour of passed Mitchelton Rotarian, John Sinnamon. The roof is now well and truly up, however another $25,000 is required in order to complete construction so the children can move in to the new building. The Mitchelton Rotary are excited to announce that Cathy Booth will be the special guest speaker at February's event. Cathy, who is the founder of Umoja, will be sharing an insight into this extraordinary project and will update dinner guests on Sinnamon House’s progress along with some of the challenges that still lie ahead. She will also talk about how Umoja is so much more than ‘an orphanage’ and how this project also helps the community. Cathy would also like to extend thanks to The Rotary. ‘Through the unrivalled support of the Rotary and Rotary volunteers, it has allowed my team at Umoja to truly achieve the extraordinary,’ said Cathy. Details of the function are below.

The Muscle Men of The Brisbane Tramway Monthly news from the Brisbane Tramway Museum and the Ferny Grove Men’s Shed

No story about a tram museum is complete without mention of its work vehicles and the Brisbane Tramway Museum is no different. The museum relies on two vintage vehicles to move trams and buses and to work on their overhead wiring. The museum’s ‘tow truck’ is an ex-British Army Scammell, originally built in 1939 to tow heavy artillery pieces, ammunition and tanks during the Second World War. This truck saw duty in North Africa and there are photos of similar vehicles towing tanks in that war zone. The Scammell was purchased by Brisbane City Council in 1945 to tow trams and was in use for 24 years until trams ceased running in 1969. To give some idea of its power, rumour has it that when power lines came down on the Ashgrove line, the Scammell was seen hauling no fewer than three trams linked together up Red Hill!

The museum still uses this great vehicle as their tow truck to this day, some 50 years after the last tram ran in Brisbane. The other resident vintage workhorse is a 1942 International ‘K’ series truck fitted with a turntable and elevating platform - the forerunner of the modern cherry-picker. The platform is elevated manually means and can rotate 360 degrees. The body of the truck is fitted with various lockers and storage compartments for spare parts and tools. This vehicle is still used for working on the overhead wiring system today. Both vehicles were donated to the museum by Brisbane City Council once trams ceased in Brisbane. The Brisbane Tramway Museum is proudly supported by Brisbane City Council. T ENR AKING O FOR LMENT 202 S 0!

Feature Welcome to The Hills Echo’s annual spring health and wellbeing guide, The Health Hub. This edition is jam packed with health and wellbeing news and information from The Hills Districts and Surrounds.

Is Diabetes Getting On Your Nerves?

Much is known about diabetes, yet surprisingly, its neurological toll is still widely unrecognised. Peripheral neuropathy (PN) (damage to the nerves in the limbs) is one of the most common and debilitating complications of diabetes. Symptoms may include pins & needles, numbness, tingling, muscle pain, “burning” in the feet and poor balance. This is all due to accelerated ageing of the body’s longest nerves – for instance, each sciatic nerve contains about 6,000 nerve fibres, and the thinnest (un-myelinated) nerves are width of just a few blood cells. The symptoms of PN can make exercise painful and sleep difficult; which can lead to tiredness, weight gain and an increased risk of hyperglycaemia. Hyperglycaemia can damage blood vessels, which can reduce sensation and impede the supply of blood to wounds. Therefore it’s necessary to avoid injury, which unfortunately may result in further avoidance of exercise. This can lead to cardiovascular issues including stroke. This can create a domino effect in the body’s central and

thus peripheral nervous systems (which can result in PN), in a vicious cycle. To get ahead of these symptoms, proper testing is important. Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS) can identify and quantify PN and exclude other underlying conditions. Regular testing can objectively monitor the progress of PN in people with diabetic PN. Early diagnosis, medical interventions and lifestyle changes can relieve symptoms and improve long-term outcomes. However GP’s may be reluctant to make referrals, due to the high cost of many NCS services. Corbett Neurophysiology Services (CNS) routinely bulk-bills patients (with the exception of certain complex NCS/EMG studies performed to particular specifications of the referring Doctor). CNS provides same-day results and management recommendations to GPs along with explaining results to patients on the spot. CNS currently have short waiting times for appointments. For more information visit www.corbett.com.au or ask your GP for a referral today.

Sweat up a storm against DV

Boxing, Zumba, Group Classes - with so many different exercise options on offer it can be hard to know what exercise is right for you. Well, now is your chance to try all these classes (plus many more!) and raise funds for families affected by domestic violence at the same time. ‘Sweat Like A Girl’ is an exercise marathon like no other and set to take our district by storm on Saturday 7th March and also ties in with International Women’s Day. Organised by The Hills Women’s Collective, the event consists of six hours of back-to-back exercise sessions offering huge variety including; Pilates, Bollywood Zumba, Yoga, Bootcamp, Boxing fitness, Jazzercise and Running training. There will be seven local fitness businesses volunteering their time to run the sessions and your ticket gives you full access to participate in as many of the classes as you wish! Profits from the event go to RizeUp, a charity supporting families affected by domestic violence. If exercise isn’t your thing, there is still an opportunity to pop along and browse through the various stalls, grab a coffee or bite to eat. This extraordinary event is the brainchild of Keperra local and Hills Women’s Collective member, Briony O’Connor. After working for many years as a Women’s Health Physiotherapist, Briony realised just how prevalent domestic violence is and the impact it has on women’s self-confidence and physical wellbeing. ‘Exercising makes women feel stronger in body and mind and gives us that endorphin-fueled kick that we need to get through the daily grind. I really wanted to do something to help and it seemed natural to run an exercise-based event that could shine a light on an issue faced by too many

women - domestic violence,’ said Briony. Briony started talking to other local women about the concept and found many had the same desire to assist vulnerable women and families within our community. This in turn has culminated in the formation of the Hills Women’s Collective that now consists of 15 mums from the Hills district and surrounding suburbs. Sweat Like a Girl will take place on Saturday, March 7th from 10am-4pm at the Mary McKillop Centre, St Williams Primary School, Grovely. Tickets for ages 12+ years are available through Eventbrite or search for ‘Sweat Like a Girl’ Facebook event page for updates and booking link. Ticket prices are $15 for students $15 and $40 for adults. Bookings for stalls have already commenced. New Samford pool operators, Codie and Rachel Grimsey are delighted to have recently opened the gates to the Samford pool as Redfin Aquatics. Good news travels fast around the area with over 100 swimmers being assessed for learn to swim lessons and squads within the first few days of opening. In addition, more then 30 public swimmers came in to use the pool on the first day. “There has been an massive welcoming response from the Samford community” said Rachel Grimsey. “We hope to become one of the many facilities and services that showcase New Samford pool operators, Codie and Rachel Grimsey Samford to the greater north west Brisbane region.” Codie and Rachel are well equipped to take on role as operators of the Samford Pool. With vast experience in swimming teaching and coaching, they also have impressive credentials to match. Codie is a qualified learn to swim instructor as well as a qualified swim and triathlon coach. His wife Rachel is also a qualified learn to swim instructor and an exercise physiologist. Having lived locally for sometime, Codie has a great passion for this local pool. “I lived in Cashmere for 20 years and I have many fond memories of the Samford pool, we will be trying our best to keep the great legacy going!” said Codie. Samford is lucky to have Redfin Aquatics and Samford Swim Club President Kylie Carrett agrees. "If you're an elite swimmer in Brisbane, you will know of the Grimsey's. The arrival of Redfin Aquatics signals the start of a new era for the Samford Stingrays, as we add professional coaching at our home pool to an already strong club culture," said Kylie. There is something to suit everyone’s busy lifestyle at the Samford Pool with nine squad lessons per week on offer along with a wide range of learn to swim programs for children as young as three years of age. Shoes, uniform, books and lunch box are common items on the ‘back to school’ checklist, however one item is usually missed. With the incidence of permanent hearing loss doubling by the time a child reaches school age, it is recommended that a hearing test should be added to the top of the annual ‘back to school’ check list.. Between 9 and 12 children per 10,000 will be born with a moderate or greater hearing loss in both ears, with another 23 children per 10,000 acquiring a hearing loss by the age of 17 through an accident, illness or other causes (Australian Hearing, 2014). Optimal hearing is critical at school for listening, speech and language development and age appropriate learning and communication skills. If you have any concerns about your child’s development it is worth getting a hearing test done first - just to be sure. This can be done by contacting your local GP or calling a local Audiologist.

Ferny Hills Pool set to open all year round

Councillor Matt Constance made a splash at the Ferny Hills Swimming Club’s Christmas break up party, with the announcement that the Ferny Hills pool will be opening all year round. Last month, Moreton Bay Regional Council (MBRC) voted unanimously to work with the pool operator to extend the operation of the Ferny Hills 50m pool to an all year round facility. MBRC have also resolved to upgrade the heat banks for the 50m outdoor pool. The new heat banks will provide better energy efficiency whilst also being powerful enough to heat the pool all year round. This news has been welcomed by the various clubs that utilise the pool along with community members alike. Further details of the hours of operation will be notified by MBRC closer to winter.

Sensational Salvias and Succulent Surprises! from The Mitchelton & Districts Garden Club

Currently the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club Inc. is in recess for the holiday period.

The first meeting for 2020 will be on the 6th February at the Enoggera Memorial Hall in Trundle Street. The guest speaker, Kath Stumer will talk about Salvias. If plenty of colour is required in the garden, Salvia is a plant to consider. Most of the varieties of this plant are easy to grow and do not require a lot of care. Did you know Salvia is the largest genus of plants in the mint family? One of its several genera is commonly referred to as sage. Kath has so much knowledge to share about Salvias. With the way the climate is behaving this year it is hard to offer information about gardening activities for January. However, a great idea The club members Money plant is to apply a Seasol blooming for the first time in 70 solution approximately every fortnight and years.

also spread lots of mulch around the plant base to prevent evaporation and plant loss. Early last December a club member received an amazing surprise. Her small leaf 70 year old Jade A lighthouse purple Salvia plant, sometimes referred to as a money plant, bloomed for the first time. She was attracted by raindrops glistening like diamonds throughout the bush and when she had a closer look there were hundreds and hundreds of tiny salmon pink flowers near the top of branches about two metres above the ground. At the time this was written the blooms were still there, with more coming out on other branches. The club meets on the first Thursday of the calendar month, except January. Visitors and new members are most welcome. Meetings commence after morning tea which is served at 9.45 a.m. The hall is close to public transport and accessible by wheel chair. There is a lucky door prize, a continuous raffle and plant exchange table. For more information, please phone the President, Pat, on 3356 1256.

Roosters make Rugby affordable for all families

Everton Park Junior Rugby Union Club, now in its fifty-third year, is home to the mighty Roosters. The club is calling out for boys and girls from Under 6 to Under 16 to join their fun and family friendly club for the 2020 season.

A new committee has been elected for season 2020 and Club President Julia Thurgood believes the club needs to focus on getting kids involved. ‘We know how hard it can be to afford club sport, so we have put together a package to make things affordable,’ said President Thurgood. The Roosters will offer an early bird discount, on top of one of the most affordable fees for a club. New players will also get a bag, a ball and their club shorts and socks included. President Thurgood wants kids to be on-board and encourages families doing it a bit tough to get in contact with her to talk about what the club can offer.

Page 22 - January 2020, The Hills Echo

‘We are offering a new incentive this year, if you have access to the Queensland Government’s ‘Fair Play’ voucher, the Roosters will accept it as full payment for the players 2020 fees. They will not have any other out of pocket expenses for fees this year,’ explained President Thurgood. If you are interested or want more information, head along and see for yourselves what EPJRUC offers at their Welcome to Roosters night. The Welcome Night will kick off at 5:30pm and finish around 7:30pm on Friday 14th February at Horse Blake Oval, Hurdcotte Street, Enoggera. Bring yourself and school friends, have a kick and run on the field and enjoy a BBQ and drink with the crew. If you can’t make it, you can learn more about the Club by going to the website, on their Facebook page, or call the Club President on 0409 480 830. Registrations are open on the Rugby Xplorer App with early bird discounts closing on Sunday 16th February.

Karate is more than just a sport for local families

Kids sports have big benefits for kids. Research links participation to better grades and self-esteem, longterm improvements in education, employment and lower obesity rates.

But the escalating time, travel and financial demands of many competitive kids sports are pushing some parents over the edge. Many are pushing back and looking to sports that are inclusive for the whole family. By this families can still reap the many benefits of sport mentioned above, however also gain quality time as a whole family. Here at The Hills Echo, we have researched local sports that the entire family can realistically take part in and discovered that Karate is a fantastic option. Karate can improve your stamina, focus, coordination along with your fitness and overall health. It will teach life skills, how to defend yourself against others, including how to not put yourself in dangerous situations. All of this can improve self-confidence and self-esteem giving the student a great sense of self accomplishment. Luckily for local residents, we have a local dojo that encourages family participation. The Hurdcotte Street dojo in Enoggera is the Queensland home to The International Okinawan GojuRyu Karate-do Federation (IOGKF) and houses a variety of world class instructors. Here, students gain so much more than just physical skills. They gain self-respect and self-discipline which sees their behaviour change, their work improve, their ability to focus and problem solve increases, it provides so much more than just learning to punch and kick. The IOGKF caters for all age groups, and the instructors have found that children have generally developed the ability to concentrate and participate for the duration of the classes from age six upwards. Currently, they have a wide age range of students that enjoy the classes from age six to sixty. Head Sensei, Gavin Hill, who is a 5th degree black belt and has over 30 years experience in Karate, explains that they already have many families reaping the rewards of this training. ‘We have three families at the dojo at the moment, combinations of fathers and sons/daughters. It is quite inspiring to see how they enjoy sharing this healthy activity and having fun at the same time,’ said Sensei Gavin. The IOGKF are excited to announce that in the New Year they are introducing children's classes at 5:30pm that last for

TaxArana Office now open We're back in the office and ready to help you with your tax! Make an appointment to get on track with your tax and be prepared this upcoming tax season. Each TaxArana client receives a free checklist which helps remind you of the records and considerations for your tax returns. If you'd like one, pop in to our office (the house on the corner of Dawson Parade and Glenlee Street) in Arana Hills. Bushfire Appeal + ATO As our community watches the horrors of the bushfires unfold, our thoughts quickly move from shock to 'what can I do?' and 'how can I help'? Watch this space as we find out where help is needed, we will be putting together a fundraising drive to help those affected by the fires. Please keep an eye on our Facebook page for the most up to date information. If you have family and friends who have been affected by the bush fires, let them know that the Australian Tax Office has put in place special considerations. From the ATO website: "We don't want you to be concerned about your tax affairs if you've been impacted by the bush fires. We will help you sort out your tax affairs later. If you, or anyone you know, has been affected by this disaster and need assistance, phone us on 1800 806 218 when you are ready." Keep your receipts! During the 'silly season' people tend to be more relaxed with routines; including financial ones. Make sure you keep all receipts and records for your upcoming tax returns. This makes tax preparation so much easier come tax time.

Arana View leaps into the new decade A monthly update from the Arana View Club

Happy New Year to everyone! I hope your festive season plans went off without a hitch and everyone is rested and ready for another busy and exciting year at Arana VIEW club. The Christmas Party was a fun-filled lunch as the committee entertained everyone. I don’t think the committee is ready for the stage yet, lots more practice needed! Don’t forget our annual subscriptions are due as well. We have an interesting year of activities planned as well as some exciting guest speakers. Cost for lunch is $30. Our book lending will be operating this meeting so bring along any books you have to boost it up again.

Big year ahead for Serenata Singers!

The Serenata Singers, a community choir based in The Gap, will be celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2020. In addition to a packed concert schedule, the year will be marked by a special reunion function that will commemorate this milestone. Photos and documents drawn from the choir’s history will be available for viewing in the choir’s website. The choir is always looking for new members and 2020 would be an ideal time to join! The choir sings a variety of popular, traditional, spiritual and show tunes. It rehearses weekly on Monday evenings at The Gap Uniting Church and performs regularly mainly for retirement communities, care facilities and community groups. The choir is particularly interested in adding some male voices. No audition is necessary, an ability to read Councillor for The Gap Ward music is helpful, but not required. 3407 1900 The choir will hold an 477 Waterworks Road, Ashgrove QLD 4060 open night on Monday 2nd March at 7.15pm at The Gap thegap.ward@bcc.qld.gov.au Uniting Church auditorium, 1050 Waterworks Road, www.steventoomey.com.au The Gap. This is a noobligation chance to meet TheGapWard choir members, find out about the choir and observe #thegapward and join in a rehearsal. The Ferny Report Mark Furner M.P.

State Member for Ferny Grove

Local schools to be fully air-conditioned

Local schools in Ferny Hills, Ferny Grove, Keperra and Mitchelton will be fully air-conditioned this year due to an extra funding allocation by the Palaszczuk Government. The best research shows that student’s concentration increases and learning outcomes improve when kids are not distracted by the heat. I think it is also important to acknowledge the fantastic work already done by local P&Cs to provide air-conditioning in our schools. They have done amazing work and laid the foundations for this funding allocation now to complete the job in a fiscally responsible way.

Are you distracted while driving?

The Palaszczuk Government is committed to making our roads safer, that’s why we have increased the penalties for distracted driving. From February, the fine for using your phone while driving will increase to $1,000. It’s a high price, but not as high as the costs and trauma for those killed or injured in crashes caused by distracted drivers. The message is clear: When you’re behind the wheel, leave your phone alone.

Ferny Grove State High Centre of Excellence open to students

The $19.9 million Centre of Excellence at Ferny Grove State High School will open on time and on budget for the record number of students attending Ferny Grove State High this school year. Announced in June 2018 as part of the Palaszczuk Government’s 2020 Ready program the centre will be home to 22 new classrooms, four science labs and a specialist STEM studio. In addition, a further thirty million dollars in education investments are being made in our local schools this year with announcements on the awarding of contracts expected shortly. Investing in education is the cornerstone to the future of our state and I am making sure that our local community receives its fair share.

www.hillsecho.com

If you have driven past Ferny Grove High School recently you will have seen the new building take shape. It is amazing how rapidly this project has been achieved. And not a moment too soon with record numbers of students in 2020.

COUNSELLOR’S COLUMN with Robin Botic

Dear Robin, I am just wondering how to deal with this situation. I have been married for 10 years, we have 2 young children and I think my wife thinks that's all she has to be, a mother. No mistaking it, she is a great mother and I really respect her for that, but I want my wife back. It’s the kids, the kids, the kids. When is there time for me? Our sex life is down the gurgler, our youngest is 4 so I reckon she ought to be over the birth, the tiredness etc. I’ve been patient and I've tried to be supportive. Wendy is a stay at home mum and I don’t think it's fair that I have to stop work to carry bricks. I don’t mind helping bath, feed the kids but hell, she has all day to do the damn housework and I don’t see why I should have to do it when I come home or on the damn weekend. I have enough to do. They are good kids, have been good babies. I just think she does too much for them. It's like she’s on a mission to be the most perfect mum and god, a conversation is so mind bogglingly boring these days. She used to be a top corp exec but her mind's gone to mush. We’ve been fighting a lot more lately. I’m lonely and I don’t see how I can get her to see my needs. Steve

Dear Steve, The issues that you are struggling with come up very frequently so I will reiterate. Transmission from couple to couple with young family is one of the hardest to negotiate. Huge changes are being placed on you and one of the biggest stumbling blocks is the mutual ‘I don’t feel recognised, appreciated, valued’. Are a number of your disagreements about competing as to who is doing the most (i.e. I've done A-Z etc and now I'm too tired to help you but I want you to help me or leave me alone, whichever applies). What I have found to be behind this little number is: 1 – You're both genuinely doing a lot and want a break but there is no time or energy left to give to the other as the other wants. 2 – This lack of giving is often then perceived as a lack of love or appreciation. For you it can be about your hard work and sacrifice as provider. For your partner it can be about perceived lack of respect, appreciation and recognition of (a) what she is doing (b) what she has given up to do this. This is often harder for a woman who has given up her independence and sense of self gained through a career etc. She becomes subsumed in the maternal role. No matter how important she feels her mothering to be, there can be a conflict of belief. You know

how important this role is but society for eons has said that he who earns the money is more significant and should we say, have the control. Women are only two generations (since the 1970’s) into having this independence for themselves. It can be a hard thing to give up, particularly so as your wife was very successful in this role. 3 – Being a mother is an extremely consuming task, often for awhile children come first. It doesn’t mean she loves you less. We are biologically and socially conditioned to feel this. It's part of nature’s survival plan. Your wife takes this seriously and is giving her all. If she’s a perfectionist all the more so. If she feels you are not appreciating her in this regard this could make her behave more oppositionally towards your demands/ requests for me or more ‘us’ time. What is critical here is that instead of getting into a fight over it, find the space and time to calmly reassure her that you do appreciate all of the above but that it is also important to you that you are also recognised. The demands for your help in the housework chores that you feel are unfair may be more about the fact that if you are willing to do them, you are giving her passive recognition and agreement of her contribution. A fairer way of tackling this workload situation is to sit down and work out what is reasonable for each of you to do, given the time you each have to do it. Your wife may have to look at how she actually spends her day. Play time and activities with the children and trying to meet all their requests is not necessarily the best thing for them, her or your relationship. This is particularly so if it leaves backlog of chores that have to be picked up at the end of the day. Prioritise, put up with some of the mess, whatever, it is more important that you actually spend some adult time together. You have to find that time and keep making that time for the next 20 years or you won't have a relationship when your kids leave home. Resentment is a killer of the libido, so is the feeling that you there just to service someone else’s needs. Rest your feelings. If you are hurting because you miss the feeling of reassurance and confidence in your love that you gained upon making love say so. Be prepared to hear what she has to say about this without getting defensive. Look at what you can both change to bring that loving connection back in. This is so important to relationships. Sex is about connecting at a deep, safe and pleasurable level special to each partner. Honest exchange is needed both verbally and sexually. Keep addressing the issues without blame or dismissal of the other. Listen to understand not hear criticism. Get off trying to justify your actions. Remember each of us is super sensitive about our desire to be the perfect parent - you never will be. Aim to be a good parent and an even better partner. That way the family and your relationship will grow. Robin.

Congratulations Mark Furner & Peter Dutton

Some of us can be quick to criticise and slow to congratulate any elected member for what they do for us. Now on this occasion I offer a big congratulations to both Mark Furner Qld Govt member and also Peter Dutton Australian Govt member, for their working cooperation towards an important solution for our community. Briefly to explain, the planning for the $100 million proposed ‘Transit Oriented Development’ (TOD) on the Queensland Government owned Ferny Grove Rail Station land has been ongoing for some time now. Just one of the community issues raised regarding the TOD proposal was a need for more ‘commuter use’ vehicle parking. The issue was addressed with the Australian Government offering $11m specifically for more commuter parking if the project is approved. I would like to thank the Australian Government for this and also thank the Queensland Government for working positively in its planning. I would also like to offer congratulations to both Ministers, Peter Dutton and Mark Furner for working together, so that if the Ferny Grove TOD does get approved, extra commuter parking (above normal required) could be a realistic community solution, a big thanks to you both! HOROSCOPES

Residents concerned about Samford Valley CSIRO Parklands Master Plan

Earlier last year a group of impacted Samford residents met with staff from the Moreton Bay Regional Council (MBRC) to raise concerns about the the Samford Valley CSIRO Parklands Master Plan's implementation. The issue was the lack of any form of MBRC engagement with those stakeholders negatively impacted by the development. These included; the seemingly out of control hours of operation of the Ranger Soccer Club, the intrusive nature of the lighting of the fields (both from a visual 20 meter high steel pole set against the rural mountain backdrop and a light spillage point of view) and the safety and security for nearby residents of the car park adjacent to the Soccer Club. This car park has become a popular race track for young hoons late at night. Over the past 8 months its been a rocky ride as 88 impacted residents within audible and visual distance of the works have received comment from the various MBRC officials as a result of the petition being tabled on 13 August at Council. Most of the responses to inquiries have been either ignored, partially answered or contradictory in nature. As rate payers we think we deserve better from our elected officials and now question whether we are emerging as another uncloaked Logan and Ipswich Council case? John
