Sling Shotter Terrorising Upper Kedron
On the 2nd January 2019 a woman was hit on the head by a 1cm ball bearing in the back yard of her home at Strathmere Place, Upper Kedron. The bearing was one of approximately five that were fired and it is likely they were fired from a high-powered sling shot. The bearing also narrowly missed two girls (aged two and seven years old) playing in their yard. In the last year there have been reports of hundreds of ball bearings hitting homes and narrowly missing residents in the Strathmere Place precinct. People and pets are in danger whilst property is being damaged by the projectiles. ‘We are now scared to go outside into our garden and let the children play in case we get injured,’ said a local Strathmere Place resident. ‘If our children can’t play outside in their own yards in safety, that is a big issue.’ By estimating the distance and trajectory, Strathmere Place residents are speculating that the ball bearings are being fired from a high powered sling shot from an elevated position on the other side of Cedar Creek. Supporting this scenario is the fact that damage to homes is only occuring on the western face of the Strathmere Place residences. The angle of Cedar Creek is much too steep to provide the platform to launch these projectiles. The distance a ball bearing could travel and still maintain power to cause damage, rules out homes over 200m away. ‘There have been plenty of angry comments on social media about the culprit,’ said local Strathmere Place resident, Jeremy Verhey. ‘When it comes to our children, we are of course very protective. However, I want to mention that it is most likely
the person or child firing these missiles does not understand what they have done. They don’t realise the consequences nor the damage they are inflicting. However, it is time to restore safety and peace to our community. We need a solution that resolves this problem so we can allow our children to venture outside again.’ Ferny Grove Police Station are aware of this issue and are monitoring the neighbourhood closely. They are keen to recieve any information that will assist them in this matter. Please call the Ferny Grove Police Station on 3872 1555 if you have any One of the ball bearings fired from the sling shot further information.

LABOR’S HOUSING TAX WILL HIT ALL AUSTRALIANS
Labor’s Housing Tax will hit home values, increase rents and hurt our economy. Labor risks $12bn housing hit
new housing would lead to a fall in 42,000 dwellings construction of up to ,000 fewer over five years and 32 , according to jobs across the country g of Bill Shorten’s independent modellin key property policies.
It’s a lose-lose policy - if you own your own home it will be worth less, and if you rent your home it will cost you more. A growing list of experts warn Labor’s policies will have a negative impact on the economy and property market. It will punish every Australian with equity in their home. Labor’s Housing Tax will hit 1.3 million Australians who negative gear their property.

The community spirit was in full swing at George Willmore Park on the 1st December for the Hills Community Carols. The Community Carols Committee made up of representatives from the Golden Valley Keperra Lions Club, The Hills District PCYC and the Ferny Districts Amateur Fishing Club were extremely pleased with the support shown by the community for this annual event. A bucket collection was conducted during the evening to support the dedicated volunteers of the Arana Hills SES (a number of whom were in central and north Queensland assisting with bushfire relief.) The committee would like to extend a huge ‘THANK YOU’ to the community for showing their support!

Arana View Sizzles At Keperra Bunnings
A happy new year to all our members. Some of us will already feel the year is well underway as we did a sausage sizzle at Keperra Bunnings on Sunday13th January. Thank you to those members who were able to help. Our fundraising is off to a good start for the year. Our February meeting will take place on the 6th February at the Arana Leagues Club, Dawson Parade, Grovely. It is our Annual General Meeting so remember all positions are declared vacant and we love to see new people taking on a position! Also, memberships are due then if not already paid. There is an exciting list of guest speakers for the year, starting with Brian Herd, a Lawyer who is well-versed in the rights of an ageing population. His talks are lively and informative. Everyone is asked to bring an item of unwanted jewellery or a scarf for our swap table. All will be sold at $5 each to continue our fund-raising to support our 14 Learning for Life students. Our borrowing library will be available so bring in any new books you may have read. Cost of the lunch is $30 and please let Carol know by noon Monday 4th February. A little bit of knowledge goes a long way
Water is a precious commodity and the children from Willmore Kindergarten have been educating the community on how to not take it for granted.
A poster created by the children of Willmore Kindergarten
www.hillsecho.com
Their journey began while watching a YouTube video of a choir singing ‘Africa by Toto’. The children together with their teacher, Linda Meinicke, wanted to learn more about the choir so they researched and discovered that the choir was from Cape Town in South Africa. ‘This led the children to ask questions about Cape Town,’ explained Linda. ‘During our research, we learnt about the drastic drought South Africa was experiencing. The situation so dire that if rain did not come, the whole city would run out of water.’ Linda led the children to learn more about what is a drought and what causes it and encouraged the children to think of ways they might be able to help. They contacted a local kindergarten in Cape Town to see if there was anything they could do to help, even offering to send bottles of water over to them. In the following months, Australia’s drought was declared, and the children became even more hands-on in their approach to saving water. They thought of ways to save water and created posters with tips to educate others. Even leaving hints and tips around the kindy for this year’s children to continue their water saving ways. Linda explained that the entire year was an empowering lesson for the children. ‘What they have learnt is that they can influence change, they can be the ones to teach their families and the community and their voice is just as powerful as adults,’ said Linda.

Mitchelton & Districts Garden Club
Happy New Year readers! February 7th is when the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club will meet at the Enoggera Memorial Hall, Trundle Street, Enoggera. This is the first meeting of the club’s 55th year. The February guest speaker is Kath Stumer who will talk about Zygo Cactus. If you would like to grow something that does not require a lot of care, this is the plant to grow. It flowers profusely in the middle of the year with hanging bowers of flowers in all colours from white to pinks, reds, apricot and cyclamen. It’s a waterwise plant too and ideal for hanging baskets and pots. It’s easily propagated from a leaf cutting and there’s a special technique to develop the plant so that it forms a strong trunk. Activities this February include watering, mowing and controlling weeds through mulching. If you like to grow your own seedlings, now is the time to plant seeds in punnets kept in a protected area where you can keep a check on them. The seedlings should then be ready to plant out in the garden in April. Don’t forget to nourish the garden beds in readiness for the new plants. Check your roses as black spot is prevalent at this time, and also examine your lawn as lawn grubs are still active. The meeting commences after morning tea which is served at 9.45 a.m. Visitors and new members are most welcome. This club meets on the first Thursday of the calendar month. The hall is close to public transport and is accessible by wheel chair. For more information, please phone the president, Pat, on 3356 1256. www.hillsecho.com

New Season Excitement For Arana Netball
With the start of the new year, preparations for the 2019 netball season are in place. As in previous recent years, registration (through MyNetball) and payment are on-line. Head to the club’s web site at www. arananetballclub.com.au to register. For those with any queries, you can email arananetballclub@gmail. com or phone the President, Jenna, on 0404 132 007.
Club sign-on day will be on Sunday, 3rd February, from 4pm to 6pm. This will be at the club’s training courts in Leslie Patrick Park, behind the Community Hall, and with easiest access and parking off Olearia Street West. Players whose registration and payment have been successfully completed online do not have to come to this sign-on afternoon, but those who need to purchase any uniform items, have queries about playing for Arana Netball, or have not yet completed online registration need to come down. Arana Netball Club is a long-established (over forty years) family-oriented club. Fees are kept as low as possible and a concession in fees is applied to second and subsequent dependent members in the same family. While the normal ages for playing club netball are from 8 years (born 2011) to opens (over 19 years,) this year players born in the first six months of 2012 and in grade 2 this year, are now able to register and play. Any players under 20 years who have not previously played for Arana Netball also need to provide proof of date of birth. Another change to Downey Park’s grading structure this year is the introduction of competition for players over 35 years, aimed at mothers and others who
are either coming back to playing after a big break, or those who are no longer competitive enough for regular grades. The Queensland Government makes available Get Started vouchers for $150.00 to be used towards fees for children in eligible clubs. Arana Netball Club is registered for this, so any families who may be eligible need to check out guidelines and have a QGrants account set up before the next round opens for applications this month. Those registered previously need only to log in again. See www.qld.gov.au/recreation/sports/ funding/getinthegame/getstarted/apply. Available grants usually run out fairly quickly so should be applied for as soon as possible after opening. Once registrations and sign-on day are past, selections dates will be conveyed to all intending players and after these trials teams will be named and training will begin. This year Downey Park’s fixtures do not commence until Saturday 27th April, with Grand Final day scheduled for 7th September. Arana Netball Club meetings, open for all interested to attend, are on the third Monday of each month, commencing at 7.30pm, at the Community Centre, Dawson Parade, Arana Hills, in Leslie Patrick Park. Parents and senior players who attend meetings can help Committee members with decisionmaking to help shape the future of the club. The next meeting is Monday 21st January.

A Great Way To Start Hockey!
Pine Hills Hockey is a long established local club that has now been in the Hills District for over 30 years. The club is a small family-friendly club with both junior and senior hockey teams.
For over five years, Pine Hills Hockey have been running their Friday night ‘Hook in 2 Hockey’ program. This introductory program is designed for children to learn the game of hockey in a safe friendly environment. The sessions start with some basic skills training which lead into playing games by the end of the six week of the program. It is a great way to start hockey! Some players go on to play a season of hockey, whilst others return for another six week ‘Hook in 2 Hockey’ program the following year. For more information visit the Pine Hills Hockey website (www.pinehillshockey.org.au) or head down and meet some club members at their Sign On day on the 9th February from 1-4pm and participate in some hockey activities.

Learn To Play Tennis Like A Pro
Southern Cross Tennis is a multi award winning coaching team at the Samford Tennis club. With tennis available for all ages and skill levels it's not hard to see why they have won several awards. Students representing their region, state and country, as well as professional players are byproducts of their elite programs.
Children's lessons start as young as three years old, where kids begin in blue hotshots. As the children progress through the levels and advance their skills, they are given more opportunities to participate in fixtures and various Australian competitions. The adult fixtures program runs every weekday at the Samford Tennis Club and even attracts past US college tennis players! Players of all levels are welcome and graded to the appropriate fixtures evening to suit their ability. The club even has an hour lesson incorporated into the Monday night fixtures. Southern Cross Tennis coaches are all Tennis Australia qualified and contract their coaching services to the school of excellence at Kelvin Grove. It's not hard to see why this tennis club has been given the green light for two additional courts to increase the number of participants. Come along to the open day to find out more about this one of a kind opportunity to play tennis with the best.
Developmental Benefits of Tennis For Kids
Bone Strength: Playing tennis regularly strengthens the bones of young players and has been proven to help prevent osteoporosis later on in life. Hand-Eye Coordination Kids who play tennis learn to constantly judge the timing between the approaching ball and the right point of contact, quickly accelerating their hand-eye coordination even when other activities and sports might have failed to do so. Aerobic and Cardiovascular Exercise Tennis gets kids moving! Without even realizing it, they’ll be running around for a good hour straight while maintaining a high energy level. That’s great for strengthening their heart, and also helping them (and by extension their parents!) get a good night’s rest. Agility During a single point kids may change direction as many as 5 times in 10 seconds!

Arana Ascot Junior Hockey Club are looking forward to welcoming back players for the 2019 season and are urging the local community to give hockey a go.
The Club fielded many grass and turf teams last year and had a record number of members selected for representative teams which is a testament to the dedicated, experienced coaches and regular development sessions they hold. Club President Russell Morrison said hockey is a great way to get children active outdoors. ‘Arana Ascot has a wonderful team spirit and many friendly volunteers which makes this sport a fantastic way for kids to keep fit, make new friends and have fun,’ he said. ‘We are extremely accommodating to all new players, whether they have played before or not, and are calling for new players to join us in 2019.’ ‘The qualified coaches are dedicated to helping each child be the best they can be and I’m proud of all the players who worked hard last year and were selected to play representative hockey. In particular, Lara Pyle and Hannah Tunney, who were chosen for the Queensland School U13 and shadow teams,’Russell said. If your child is aged between four and 17 years old and would like to give Hockey a go, come to the free Come and Try Hockey session on Tuesday, 5 February. Make 2019 your year for a healthier you
Dr Jane Brazier, Director of BreastScreen Queensland’s Brisbane Northside Service encourages all women, in particular those aged between 50 and 74 years, to make an appointment at one of the many BreastScreen Queensland services. ‘Making an appointment to have a free breast screen is a really good New Year’s resolution because it is so easy to do and so important for women,’ Dr Brazier said. A breast screen is the most effective method of detecting breast cancer at a very early stage even before a lump can be felt or seen. This is important because finding breast cancer at an early stage gives a woman the best possible chance for successful treatment and wellbeing. ‘All women from the age of forty are eligible for a free breast screen every two years. It is an important part of looking after your health,’ Dr Brazier advised. BreastScreen Queensland Brisbane North services are located at Chermside, Kippa-Ring, Keperra, Indooroopilly, North Lakes and David Jones in the City.

Appointments only take about 20-30 minutes and a GP referral is not required. Start 2019 off the right way and make your appointment now by calling 13 20 50 and talk to one of our friendly staff or book online at www.breastscreen.qld.gov.au
Smoothies
Smoothies are fabulous at this time of year – they make a light brekkie option and you can really pack in the summer fruit. However for something really refreshing, try turning your morning blend into a creamy iceblock. Pour your fave smoothie into an iceblock mould and insert an iceblock stick, then freeze until firm for a tasty anytime treat.

What does ‘Be Accountable’ mean?
On the turn of the new year, Tom walked into the gym. He said, ‘I’ve given up the smokes and I’m doing a bunch of checks with my doctor. I’m getting older and I need to do something about my fitness.’ At Snap Fitness Arana Hills, we specialize in helping people like Tom. Snap Fitness is renowned for fast, convenient, affordable fitness clubs. How do we help? We provide a range of the best equipment to meet your needs, no matter if you are like Tom coming back to fitness after a long time away, contemplating joining a gym for the first time or if you are trim and fit. More than that, we have highly skilled staff and personal trainers who specialize in helping you meet your health and fitness goals. In Tom’s case we are working with his doctor and nutritionist to create a state-of-the-art fitness program. As well as working with Tom to monitor and encourage him to meet his goals. At Snap Fitness Arana Hills, we believe ‘be accountable’ means making the decision in this New Year to be a New You. Once you have done that we can help you get there. No fuss, no pushy gym boss, just professionals who understand that for most people to gain fitness and keep it requires some help. What’s on offer? CHRONIC PAIN What is it and what can help me manage it?
Most of us think of pain as a result of an injury, surgery or trauma or other conditions. We expect it will last a short time and eventually go away. This is Acute pain. However, for some, the pain doesn’t go away and lasts beyond the expected 3 months. Often there is an increased pain experience, not just in the area of injury, but also in surrounding tissue or nerves. It can also exist without a clear reason at all. This ongoing type of pain is called chronic pain. It is estimated that one in three Australians live with chronic pain. Everyone’s experience of pain is different. This is because pain is complex – how we perceive pain involves an interaction between our mind and body. This interaction involves the nervous system and other factors, such as genetics, culture, thoughts, previous pain experiences, stress and what was happening in our lives when the pain started. Physiotherapists are highly skilled professionals able to assess you individually, to help identify the type of pain you are experiencing, such as nerve pain or mechanical pain and find the approach which best helps you manage your pain. Interventions which can help include the following: Education about chronic pain, pain management strategies such as pain diaries pacing activity, distraction, mindfulness and the chronic pain cycle; Pain often results in inactivity which can cause stiff joints, weak muscle, poor fitness, fatigue, weight gain and low mood. It also helps you become less anxious about your pain. PhysioRESOLVES has 20 years’ experience in helping people with chronic pain and uses a variety of treatment approaches to help you manage your pain. Call 0435 087650.

Why Can’t I Keep My New Years Resolution?
It’s that time of year again, when people have promised themselves they’re going to ‘do that thing’ they’ve been saving up to do as a New Year’s resolution…. They do this with great sincerity and hope, but then things grind to a halt a month or two into the process. Why is that? Sometimes we feel a strange pressure to commit to change because it’s a new year and there’s this ‘New Years’ Resolution’ thing. .We may choose something we’re not really serious about, and let it go when we lose interest in it. Let’s face it – if something is genuinely important to do, why wait for a ‘magic date’ to come around? However, we may have chosen something that we really want to change, perhaps we’ve been meaning to do it for a while, and we use the ‘New Year’ excitement to set the goal! So, why doesn’t it work for so many?
Page 32 - January 2019, The Hills Echo
Often, it comes down to the process of goal setting. People need to set ‘smart’ goals, with a series of steps (Immediate, Short-, Medium- and Long-term). Goals that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and have a Timeframe attached (‘SMART’) are more likely to be manageable goals that we can accomplish. Probably the most common reason that ‘New Years Resolutions’ fall over is that people aim for too much, too soon. When this understandably doesn’t happen, they lose hope and let go of their goal. If you’re struggling to change something important to you, there are many people out there who can help with developing realistic goals and overcoming obstacles to change. TAX MATTERS TaxArana has years of experience in dealing with personal and business tax at many levels; simple income tax through to large, complex businesses. No matter how straight forward or complex the paperwork is, the difference between a good tax return and a great one, can come down to something as simple as your own organisation. Getting organised and setting yourself simple processes can and, if you stick with it, will help. Here are some tricks of the trade that are so easy that you'll wonder why you haven`t been doing this already! 1. Start a tax folder (digital or hard copy); just start one. This is to be the central place to keep all things tax related. Be consistent with your filing and make sure all required records / receipts goes into this file. 2. Date night with the books! Set aside one hour, one night a week to go through your admin + update / make sure you have what you need. Make it a habit and stick to it. The more you do this, the easier to becomes (and the less time you may need). 3. Download an app to your phone to keep track of purchases / receipts. The app `MyDeductions` from the ATO is a good one & easy to use. Once you implement these three easy steps, stick to them week in week out, you will find that your paperwork becomes less of a chore. Keeping organised is essential to knowing where you stand financially and

COUNSELLOR’S COLUMN with Robin Botic
Listening
When we are listened to we equate this with being worth listening to, and our positive sense of self is affirmed. Acquiring the skill of listening to understand is equally important as being able to converse in an adult-to-adult manner. Again, as with speaking, listening is about taking responsibility to not lay blame or to judge. When difference challenges us we have a strong tendency to listen to hear criticism above everything else. When we perceive we are hearing it, our unconscious reactivity is triggered, rendering us less capable of reasonable discussion. The more we feel our sense of self is being attacked, the more we defend with attack, and unless the other is able to hold a space of greater rationality and calm, the situation quickly degenerates. What really irks most of us is when we feel we have not been listened to or understood. A very effective way of regaining and maintaining reason is to listen and then paraphrase back what you have heard. It shows you have understood what has been said but it does not mean you ncessarily agree. Then
THE WORK WELL
reply making your ‘I’ statements about what you think, feel or believe et cetera about what has just been said. Paraphrasing slows the pace down. It gives space and distance to both of you. Unstated, off-the-track assumptions are less likely to be made by both parties if you show you have heard correctly. Being heard also calms us down. It gives an opportunity for your partner not only to recognise that you have heard, but also for them to hear what they hear you have said, and to redress or clarify their exchange. For example, your partner is criticising your behaviour in an aggressive manner: Partner: ‘You always interrupt me, you never let me finish a sentence, you’re always finishing off what you think I’m going to say, it drives me mad. It’s impossible to have any sort of discussion with you etc etc.’ So instead of jumping in and defending or denying your behaviour or the frequency of it, you might try paraphrasing what has been said instead. You: ‘What I’m hearing you say is that you find that when I interrupt you and finish off your sentences for you, it drives you mad and makes it impossible for you to discus anything with me.’ Now you’ve had time by repeating it, to hear someone’s opinion of your behaviour. Take responsibility, take a big breath if necessary, agree or disagree according to how you HONESTLY SEE THE TRUTH OF THAT STATEMENT without a judgmental tit-for-tat of ‘Well, you do such-andsuch too.’ Instead you might be really brave if it’s in any way true, and acknowledge your behaviour. You may even offer that you will do your best to change it WITHOUT THE ADDITION of: ‘But you have to do something-or-other too.’ Deal only with the issue that has been brought up, not all the red-herring counter-claims that you think might absolve you or at least make the other equally wrong. Make it a point between you to deal with what upsets you when it happens, not on the back of the other’s perceived criticism of you. If you break down the interactions in many of your heated exchanges, you will find the above patter to be at the heart of your difficulty in trying to reasonably dissolve differences. Sometimes we have to agree to disagree. Robin
