Aiming For The Stars
The ceremony was conducted at the Arana Leagues Club with more than 100 people in attendance. The GVK Lions Club acknowledges the generous support of the Arana Leagues Club which provided the function room free of charge. The Children of Courage Awards are designed to recognize the courage and bravery shown by these children every day. The Awards are not a competition. Every recipient of an award is a ‘winner’ in his or her own right as the recognition of these young peoples’ achievements will: Act as an encouragement for their future, help them to believe in themselves, and help to increase their self-worth.
All Children want to be accepted by others, regardless of any special needs they may have. These awards will portray them as children who have successfully overcome additional barriers which face them in this world. The Children of Courage Award Recipients were:-Lara Allan (8years of age), Jack Atkins-Walker (7yrs), Nathan Brock (11yrs), Deklen Buchanan (9yrs), Keenan Buchanan (9yrs), Destiny Drake (6yrs), Hannah Dunn (9yrs), Lachlan Farr (10yrs), Ameleia Gibson (10yrs), Emily Hayes (10yrs), Dilyn Murphy (12yrs),Taylor Richards (10yrs), Phoebe Roberts (7yrs), James Thomas (11yrs), Koby Underwood (11yrs). The Golden Valley Keperra Lions Club would like to thank the staff of the participating schools: Ferny Grove State School, Patricks Road State School, Grovely State School and Mitchelton Special School. Those staff members made time in their very busy schedules to identify children for recognition and encourage parents to participate.

Coffee that Cares
Lucy and Chloe from Patricks Road State School ready to serve!
At Patricks Road State School, a coffee cart dream came alive over 10 years ago out of a garage of a few dedicated citizens from a local church.
The cart was built from a golf cart to make it transportable for events within the school. Since the original version was created, we have had an upgrade. The old cart was donated to Ferny Grove State School which is still alive and well today. The purpose of it's origin was to raise funds for the local church and the chaplaincy programs offered within the school community. Now, it has become a caring hub and a hive of activity every morning. You will see all of the volunteers working tirelessly to pump out over 30 coffees a day. So far this this year, the cart has made over $6,000 in profits, which
www.hillsecho.com
has been donated. An amazing effort for an idea out of a local home that became a local meeting place. Not only will you see the staff and parents down at the hub but you will also meet some of our smaller school community forum groups. We often have special guests join us for coffee to speak with parents about children with learning needs, literacy and so much more. It also offers students in senior grades an opportunity to volunteer their time and gain experience in a working environment. The Coffee Cart has also gone green. BYO cup gives you a discount on your purchase. The chaplaincy program benefitting from these profits is a vital life line to all schools. Our school is no exception. This idea has created so many community links and opportunity. The list is endless. Any given day, you will see a hive of activity amongst the Coffee cart that cares, even down to the supplier of the coffee beans from Q Roasters at Stafford. They roast their own beans, are fully fair trade and have strict sustainability production. Lauchlan the owner also volunteers his time once a month to train our precious volunteers. We love supporting the local community so check out Q Roasters as well as the Patricks Roads Road Coffee cart if you are ever popping by. By Kristy Beard, Teachers Aide, Patricks Road State School

Hello Hills Echo readers. Well you’ve heard it here first Your Local Golden Valley Keperra Lions Club members are MAD - ‘Making A Difference.’ May was one of our biggest months with activities including the Hills Carnivale (Hot Dogs and Chips), Harvey Norman BBQ, Bunnings BBQ and Moreton Bay Regional Council’s Mothers Day BBQ, all to assist our fundraising for a cause. We even saw Oscar Williams at the Carnivale with a packet of chips, sitting on his new scooter. Hope you are good to eat those chips while driving Oscar!! I know it may look like we just run non-stop BBQ’s, but it’s also a great way to meet and greet members of the community. Don’t feel backward in coming up to us, asking questions and giving us suggestions on how we can assist the community while serving that mouth watering Oscar Williams on his sausage. mobility scooter which was Money raised in the obtained from funds raised Community during May was by the GVK Club directed to the Lions Medical Research Foundation, ‘Todays Research is Tomorrows Cure.’ Our next dinner meeting is at Club Arana on the 17th July (6.30pm for a 7pm start). Our guest speakers will be Peter McMahon and Bob Dale, two local volunteers who have been opening up viable walking tracks from Enoggera Dam to Jolly’s Lookout. They will talk about early Brisbane History, Brisbane Forrest Park and D’Aguilar National Park. Send me an email if you would like to attend – cost $24 includes a meal, tea and coffee (Bar facilities are also available). CAN YOU HELP?! Samford Valley Probus
News from the club
Our outing in May was only a short trip down the road to the Samford Valley Museum. We were treated to a scrumptious morning tea, entertained by the resident ‘Swaggie’ with tales tall and true and given a history lesson by the headmistress of the school. The museum guides then took us on a tour of all the displays, which bought back memories for some. Our guest speaker at this month’s meeting will be Ms. Pam Swepson, who will explain the Fire Ant eradication program. Birthdays are celebrated each month at the meetings and this month we have nine members celebrating their special day. If you would like further information about the Samford Valley Probus Club, please contact Sue - phone 07 3264 8605.

Wahminda Art Show: A week long wonder
‘White Faced Heron’ by Denise Ravenscroft is one example of some of the Art that will be on display at The Wahminda Art show.
Art has the uncanny ability to overcome cultural, political and ethnic differences: art is like a universal language that brings people together.
• Sustainability Award, sculpture section, $700. • Natures Magic Moments Award, photography section, $500. • Local biodiversity Award, mixed media, $500. • Interconnected Balance of Nature Award, Fabric Art, $500. • Youth Wildlife Warrior Award, junior and senior, $100 each. As with many not-for-profit events, the organisers are reaching out to the local business community for support. Businesses have the opportunity to sponsor one of the six major art categories. Alternatively, businesses have the opportunity to offer services or products as runners up prizes. For more information regarding entering the competition or sponsorship opportunities, please contact Melanie Massa on WahmindaArtShow@yahoo.com or visit their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/wahmindaartshow/
It is in this spirit that the Wahminda Environmental Art Show was born. The event aims to bring the community together to raise awareness and appreciation of the rich biodiversity of species in our own backyards. The week long events scheduled for later this year will cumulate in a presentation evening where winners will be chosen from each category. Funds raised throughout the week and on the presentation night will be gifted to a local environmental group who qualifies and needs support to continue their beneficial environmental work in our local community. Art categories and winning prize money are as follows:• The Wahminda Pond Award, painting section, $1000.

A fresh new look for the Museum
The museum is looking a little fresher since our timber buildings have been painted. At a guess, it was about 50 years ago that they were last painted.
We also have had the benefit of a visit by the ‘Men Of The Forest,’ a local volunteer organisation dedicated to propagating local species of plants. They have undertaken the somewhat daunting task of bringing our gardens up to scratch. The team are planting species that are native to our particular locale and will be busy periodically for the next few months. Tram 341 was the last ‘Drop Centre’ tram to be taken out of service some 50 years ago, and it featured in our commemoration. Drop Centres are so-named because the middle section is one step lower than the cabins at either end. They were introduced in 1925, and over 130 were built over the next 13 years, most of them at Milton BCC tram workshops. The early versions had only manual brakes, but as they became the workhorses of the system, air brakes were fitted to later versions. They were the first trams to have a separate driver’s (motorman’s) cabin, although access was still possible through that area. They were able to carry 110 passengers all up. Tram 271 was the first of this class to be built and is still in the museum’s fleet, although not operational at present. The museum is interested in recruiting more drivers. If you would like to learn to drive Trams by doing a six month course, please get in touch. To register your interest, and learn more about the course, please ring 3351 1776 and leave your name and contact phone number. Our training officer will get in touch and give you more details.

‘Community’. What is it? If you were to ask trusty Google, it would provide a vague answer about a group of people sharing common traits or living in the same area. However, I believe that community is a word of far more depth.
My community— existent within my family household, my school campus, my housing estate and the Hills District itself—radiates love, support and unity. As a 15-year-old, I am searching to find my place of belonging in this world. That is no easy feat. But, in this community, a multitude of opportunities are offered to me and other young people to guide us throughout this journey of growth. As a child, adults always told me that the best way to discover my strengths is through experimentation. Trying things out. To help adolescents learn their individual flair, many programs, clubs and group events are available in the local community. For the aspiring athletes of the district, there are many sporting clubs, such as Arana Club Netball and Pine Hills Football Club. For the adventure seekers, there is the McDowall Bunya Scout Group which enables its young members to ‘grow and develop together’. For enthusiastic coders, there is an enrichment program called Code Club that is offered at Arana Hills Library. For…You get the picture. By Georgia Wright Personally, I have taken part in many programs and clubs to help me find activities I am passionate about. I’ve dipped my feet into the pools of many local swim schools, indulged in the world of dance at AMMA School of Dance, located at Everton Hills, and experimented with Tae Kwon Do, art lessons, gymnastics and more. Then finally, my heart settled on Arana Netball Club and my love for shooting goals was born. I think it’s fair to say that that piece of advice given to me as a child was nothing short of pure wisdom. Now it’s no secret that being a teenager is far from the magical experience that movies like Grease cranked it up to be. Often the transition from childhood to adulthood is a bumpy road, with many ups and downs along the way. Luckily for adolescents growing up in the Hills District, they’re a part of a community that exists upon a strong foundation of support. Many support groups, psychologists, counsellors and mental health specialists are available in this locality, including an online support system called Proactive Coaching. However, I find that my most valuable supporters in life are my family, my friends, and even teachers at school. Although teenage minds are wild places, a touch of support goes a long way in keeping their thought trains on a positive pathway. This community— a haven of love, support and unity—strives to help its youth grow and flourish as individuals. Through the eyes of myself, a 15-year old, this is something to be deeply revered.

Half time for Arana Netball Club
The Downey Park Netball fixture season is now over half way through the fixture games. After a break in games over the school holidays for the first half of July, fixtures then recommence on Saturday 20th July, continuing through to late August. Finals then start on 24th August, leading to Grand Finals on 7th September. After the first full round of fixtures, re-grading of teams occurred where teams were either stronger than or not as strong as the other teams in the grade they were playing. Four Arana Netball teams were directly affected by re-grading this year. Arana 4 was moved from Intermediate 6 to Intermediate 7; Arana 5 moved from Cadet 7 to Cadet 6; Arana 6 moved up from Cadet 9 to Cadet 8; and Arana 8 was also moved higher, from 12Yrs Div. 4 to 12Yrs Div. 3. Points ladders will now change following re-grading; however, over the next few games, positions on the ladder will start to consolidate. Arana teams that are currently doing well in their competitions include Arana 1, Opens Div.6; Arana 7, 13Yrs Div.6; Arana 9, 12Yrs Div.7; and Arana 10, 11Yrs Div.7. Arana Netball Club meetings are held on the third Monday of each month at the Arana Sports meeting room located in the front area of the Hills District Community Centre, Dawson Parade, Arana Hills, commencing at 7.30pm. Compost, what you need to know from The Mitchelton & Districts Garden Club
On Thursday 1st August, when the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club meets at the Enoggera Memorial Hall, the guest speaker, Barbara Beerling will talk about Compost. Barbara is a horticultural consultant specialising in roses, fruit trees, pruning, design and garden problems. Much knowledge is to be gained from attendance at this meeting. There’s nothing like compost to condition the soil in your garden. When it is well made, it contains a full range of plant nutrients. Some are in a readily available form and others are slowly released as the compost breaks down. If you are able to make compost, it saves buying fertilisers and manures. Also it prevents vegetable and food scraps going to waste. Paper, lawn clippings and garden waste are more things that may be used. In a few weeks, they all decompose to produce a wonderful crumbly mixture. This club meets on the first Thursday of the calendar month after morning tea is served at 9.45 a.m. Visitors and new members are most welcome. The hall is situated in Trundle Street, Enoggera and is close to public transport and accessible by wheel chair. For more information, please phone the president, Pat, on 3356 1256.

Introducing a new garden for Ferny Hills Little Explorers!
Ferny Hill’s local community kindy, Willmore Kindergarten and Preschool, officially opened its new front garden space last month. Designed and built by award winning landscapers, Green Survival, the garden is perfect for little explorers. Upon entering the kindy through the beautiful timber arbour, a sense of tranquility falls upon you. The sandstone path leads you up to the bridge that crosses over a babbling brook. Surrounded by rocks and native plants, it’s the perfect place for children to sit and watch the running water. Sheltered by tall trees, children are invited to duck and weave through the garden beds on stepping-stones, unearthing elements of the natural environment. With lush new synthetic grass, the garden is accessible and safe for all to enjoy. The garden was partially funded as part of the Australian Government's Stronger Communities Programme, in which Willmore received a $17,500 grant as a contribution to the $27,500 project. Special thanks is given to Margin Media, The Hills Echo, Arana Leagues Club, Simon Whitehead & Drew Crump Real Estate and those past and current families who contributed to helping Wi l l m o r e r a i s e $ 3 , 0 0 0 of the $10,000 needed to complete the garden. You can still help Willmore reach its goal by visiting www. willmorekindergarten.com. au/grow-with-willmore for more information.

MONEYWise MONEY Wise
Welcome to MoneyWise! With the new financial year ahead of us, this is a great time of year to not only process tax returns, but to look at refreshing finances. Take a look at some of the great accounting and financial services on offer in and around our district.
Creating Wealth While Raising a Family For many people, the thought of starting a wealth creation plan whilst paying the mortgage, paying school fees and everything else that comes with raising a family, just seems impossible. But the reality is that for most families, starting a wealth creation plan is possible and starting early is the best way to ensure success. Creating wealth to afford the lifestyle you want later in life is not something reserved for just a select few, but to anyone willing to implement a few key principles: 1. Look after your pennies and the pounds will look after themselves: Current generations have lost the ability to be thrifty (or ‘cheap’ as my Gen Y friends will tell me). This is such an important part of the plan and it starts with the big items (mortgage, car choices, holidays) right through to the small things (buying cheaper groceries, going out less, buying the cheap wine) 2. Get the foundations right: You can’t start a wealth creation plan without the right foundations and that is; making sure you’ve paid off all your short term, high interest debt like credit cards and personal loans. 3. Invest for the long term: A good investment plan is for a lifetime a great one is longer. Any investment that’s offering success and riches in the next 1, 3 or 5 years is only being sold to make one person rich (and it’s not you).
4. Be disciplined: Market cycles will happen, prime ministers will change, interest rates will go up and down and Kochie will give us daily updates on Sunrise. None of this should distract you or derail you from your long term investment plan. For more information about creating a wealth creation plan, contact Precision Wealth Management on 1300 200 012

Money Saving Tips
When I was asked to give some money tips, the first one that came to mind is: save 10% of everything you earn. A simple technique, but a very hard one to put into practice. If you can master it, within 10 years, you’ll have one year’s income saved up. Budget is almost a dirty word. So make your financial plan interesting. Give yourself a good reason for holding back. For example, have several sub bank accounts and NAME them, eg Bali Holiday, Evening Dress, Motor Bike, etc Wendy buys all her clothes from charity shops because she travels overseas every year. Tom goes camping for holidays because he loves spending money on his motor bike. • Spend less than you earn – more money isn’t always the solution - it’s human nature to spend everything you earn • Develop a savings behaviour with small amounts

MONEYWise
• Create a financial cushion between you and your financial edge • Don’t claim the tax-free threshold, so you get a lump sum tax refund • When you have paid off a loan, switch that withdrawal amount across to savings • Keep your credit card limit low • Bills – write them all down – and convert each one to dollar amounts per pay cycle, eg if you get paid fortnightly and if car registration is $770/year, that is $29.62/pay, a $450/ quarter electricity bill will be $69.23/pay – save these smaller amounts so the cash will be there when the bill arrives. There will always be a push/pull. When to splurge and when to hold back – it’s an individual journey - family finances are more challenging but can be an opportunity to get to know each other more. By Rana Jewell
A Financial Planner that Cares Kent McDonald, owner of K2 Wealth, always had an interest
in saving, budgeting, shares, investments, and property. He also enjoyed helping people. So, becoming a financial planner and starting K2 Wealth was a natural step. His number one aim is to ensure that you and your family are taken care of, no matter what. His focus is on building a financial plan for your lifetime– one that can be tweaked to suit changing circumstances, while still keeping your end goals in sight. For many, it can be a daunting experience taking the first step towards engaging a financial planner, however Kent explains that at K2 Wealth, their aim is to make the process as simple and stress free as possible. ‘The first step in the financial planning process is a meeting. I meet with you to discuss your personal, family, and business situation, plus your needs, dreams, and goals. Your financial strategy isn’t outsourced or delegated. Instead, I work on it personally,’ says Kent. ‘Using the information from our meeting, I create a tailored, cost effective financial plan designed to suit you. I also take the time to personally explain why this strategy is the one you need, so you can make an educated decision.’ Furthermore, Kent’s support doesn’t end once your plan is implemented. As your circumstances change, he helps adjust your plan so it remains appropriate. These changes may include separation, a new baby, a mortgage, or something else. German Opens Doors to the World
Ferny Grove State High School’s German Immersion program allows students to develop an exceptional level of German language proficiency through learning the regular curriculum in German. Near end of Year 10, students can travel to Germany on a three-week exchange program. They stay with German families, attend school and tour Germany. Each year students sit the ‘Fit in Deutsch 2’ examination. It is conducted globally by the Goethe Institut and demonstrates German language ability against the common European benchmark A2. As a result of achieving highly in this exam, students are entitled to apply for a PASCH Scholarship (Partner Schools of the Future) which includes a fully funded threeweek language course in Germany. Furthermore, the school will host a German Corporation
day on Monday 22 July. Leaders from German businesses in Australia will speak about the value of German language to their business operations and opportunities for German language students in Germany or Australia after school. In other German Immersion news, a group of Year 7 students recently spent time decorating cloth pencil cases (Mäppchen) with motifs of Australia and Germany. They included a short letter (auf deutsch natürlich) about themselves. These have been sent to another PASCH school in the Philippines to students of a similar age who are also learning German. For more information on the school’s German Immersion Excellence Program go to the school’s website: www. fernygroveshs.eq.edu.au.

COUNSELLOR’S COLUMN with Robin Botic
Dear Robin, I am 34 years old, single and desperate. I have had a few long term relationships, but nothing of any significance in the last four years, just a number of month or so stands. I did not see the point of pursuing a relationship if I did not see any long term potential. My dream was to get married and to have a horde of children. I have tried those internet dating sites, speed dating, dance clubs, I have tried everything. I am getting very depressed about this, the only up is that I love my job, but it is not one where I am likely to meet Mr Right. I have great friends but most of them are married or in relationships. Even more depressing is that my last free girlfriend recently hooked up with someone and now I really have no one to go out with. I am too old to go clubbing or do single hangouts. The majority of my friends are really busy with their young families and don’t have the time or money to do things with me. I tried a cruise ship holiday by myself, and that was a disaster. The weekends can be so long and I am becoming obsessed with the thought that this is it! I will just have this empty boring life. My dream of a man and babies is in shatters. Even if I meet someone I will be too old to have children. I am just feeling so lonely. I am running out of time and it is putting so much pressure on me that I am afraid I might just say ‘yes’ to the next man that comes along. What is wrong with me? Am I too fussy? How do I get out of this awful mindset? Tania
Dear Tania, In summary, to get out of any depressing mindset, clarifying why you are thinking what you are thinking is the first step. The second step is noticing the feelings that are associated with these thoughts. Develop techniques of mindfulness and conscious awareness that you are having these thoughts and choosing, with the aid of strategies, how to lessen the effect of them, so that you can create distance between that conscious witnessing part in yourself and the thought feeling body you have been obsessing with. With practice you are then able to put your energy and focus into thoughts and activities that will add value to your life. Clarify what the thoughts are that are causing you this sense of desperation. These are the common ones. Is it about not having enough time. If you don’t achieve this goal is there something wrong with you? Do you think you are a failure as a women, not worthy of being loved, that you are left out, a
reject? Are you too fussy? Sometimes fussy gets disguised as lack of self-worth. Is proof of success in your own eyes and of others measured by the achievement of your dreams? Notice the feeling these thoughts bring up, notice which thoughts the strongest feelings are attached to. Doing this, helps develop our awareness of what we need to be mindful about. We determine our worth by many different things. When we need our self worth validated by the acquisition or achievement of these things we can create problems for ourselves. When we do this it is not our validity that we should be questioning but the measurement we are choosing to validate ourselves with. It is time then to examine what it is that we really value in ourselves and our life, not in the way we think that this can be expressed. For you it seems like your plan A for this expression can only be through marriage and children. What about plan B? Already you realize how much misery your obsession with these thoughts is causing you. How much of your life do you want to spend doing this or do you want to make the best you can of what is available to you? Put your dreams aside for the moment and clarify what it is that you value in yourself and life. Do you want to be the most loving, compassionate, articulate, creative etc. person you can be? What other goals can you see as being worthwhile? What are your passions, things that you enjoy, travel, physical, creative, intellectual pursuits? When you have done this, list down the ways you can go about starting to achieve this now. Having an alternative plan of action to choose is what we need when we notice our obsessive mind set and its current behaviours starting up again. Remember the more you focus on something the more it will grow. Empowerment is responsibly choosing what you want that to be. Robin

Everton News
from your Member for Everton TIM MANDER NEWS FROM THE BUDGET
Stafford and South Pine Rd Intersection
I’ve been fighting for upgrades on this intersection for years, and have written to the Minister for Traffic and Main Roads, Mark Bailey, consistently since 2015. At the last election, the State Labor government matched my promise of $26 million for the Stafford Rd / South Pine Rd intersection upgrade, and $20 million of that should have been spent by the end of 2019/20. According to the latest budget papers, only $9.629 million will be spent by the end of 2019/20 – not even half of the promise they committed to. It’s totally unacceptable and is another slap in the face for locals. I have written again to the Minister and am asking for an explanation as to why this election promise has been broken. I will continue to fight for this upgrade and will keep you up to date with any progress.

Everton MP determined to fix Stafford Road and South Pine Road intersection about the State Labor Government’s newly imposed Waste Levy at Bunya Tip. This is a new tax which the government said would have no effect on everyday Queenslanders – these increased charges have put pay to that statement. From the 1 July, residents will be charged this levy for all solid materials going to land fill. Some items may be recyclable but you will need to know what these items are and separate them from your other waste so you are not charged. Unfortunately, businesses, industry and commercial operators will be hit hard and will be charged a levy on all waste which of course will be passed on to their customers. Councils will be collecting this levy on behalf of the State Labor Government. If you would like to know more, please follow this link: www.qld.gov.au/waste-disposal-levy Marquee for Loan Community groups, schools or sporting clubs are welcome to borrow my 3x3 Marquee for events. Dickson News
from your Federal Member for Dickson PETER DUTTON
Let me know your priorities
I want to know what’s important to you. I’m working hard to make our community even better but I can’t do it on my own. I need your help to make sure we get the priorities right for our community. With your help, and by working together, I know we can get the upgrades, facilities and opportunities our community needs to be even better. Please get in touch with me at peter.dutton.mp@aph.gov. au to let me know your priorities.
Income Tax Relief
The Morrison Government is working to see our tax relief plan passed through the Parliament as soon as possible. Our plan will eliminate bracket creep and give lower and middle income earners tax relief of up to $1080. We believe you should have more money in your own pocket. Our income tax relief package was a key election commitment and could be passed within an hour of the Parliament resuming with the support of the Labor Party. At the time of writing, the new Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese and Labor have not yet committed to voting for these tax cuts which you deserve. This is incredibly disappointing but hopefully Labor will get on board in the coming days. In the meantime, we will continue working hard and will leave no stone unturned to deliver these tax cuts which you deserve.
All Abilities Playground Update
My first election commitment has been delivered! - A $200,000 contribution to the new All Abilities Playground at Leslie Patrick Park in Arana Hills from the Australian Government. This is a joint project with MBRC, and Councillor Matt Constance has been instrumental in getting Federal Member for Dickson this project off the ground. Peter Dutton and Councillor Matt Work has already started Constance at Leslie Patrick Park on the park and the aim is to have it open for Christmas and the summer school holidays.
Save the Date - Seniors Expo 2019
One of my initiatives after I was first elected in 2001 was to host a Dickson Seniors Expo. There was a lack of information for seniors in our community and I wanted to provide opportunities for seniors in the local community to access information, activities and services available. The Expo was such a success, we decided to continue it and this year will be the 16th Annual Dickson Seniors Expo. It is always a fun event and provides seniors an opportunity to meet local organisations and business who work with seniors, there will also be plenty of entertainment, guest speakers and much more. The Expo will be held at the Strathpine Community Centre off Mecklem Street and entry is free. Organisations and businesses interested in holding a stall at the Expo can contact my office on 3205 9977 for booking information. DATE: Monday 2 September and Tuesday 3 September
Drop in to my next Mobile Office
I have now completed over 2,500 visits in my mobile office and helped thousands of residents with local issues. Recently, I was able to help some locals with Centrelink issues, Veterans Affairs matters, local road problems and other issues. If you see me out and about with my caravan, please drop in. I would be happy to meet you and see how I can help you. Alternatively, you can contact my office in Strathpine on 3205 9977.
Handy resources available
Available at my Electorate Office in Strathpine are a number of handy information guides and other resources. These include shopping lists, scam spotting booklets, children’s resources, and seniors’ guides. The children’s resources will help your youngsters with schoolwork and their responsibilities around home. There are multiplication, alphabet and chores charts available. All resources are free and I hope that you drop by to pick up yours soon.

July 2019 Budget Column
The Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner delivering his first budget, he said ‘We live in one of the best cities in the world and it’s getting better all the time. The 2019-20 Brisbane City Council Budget outlines our ambition for building an even better Brisbane over the next decade and protecting our incredible lifestyle and green space.’ City Budget highlights include: • Free off peak travel for Seniors to travel on Brisbane buses, CityCats and ferries. Free travel will make better use of available capacity around Brisbane and create more opportunity for older residents to travel and connect with family and friends. • Council will be undertaking community forums to identify the missing links in public transport. $10million will be allocated over two years to develop a Northside Transport Action Plan as a commitment to combat congestion in the north-western suburbs. The North West Transport Corridor identified in the 1980’s will be used as a starting point and lead the development of a long-term transport plan as part of a Council’s transport strategy that strikes a balance between roads and public and active transport. • Lord Major Adrian Schrinner is greening Brisbane’s suburbs with a record spend in the Council Budget to increase tree planting in suburban parks, create tree-lined boulevards and provide households with a discounted green waste bin. Households will receive free delivery of a green bin to recycle green waste as compost and maximise the city’s recycling efforts and stop green waste being dumped in landfill. • The budget will also include a further $15.4million towards the purchase of 750 hectares of bushland by 2010 as part of the accelerated Bushland Acquisition Program. Safeguarding the city’s important green space and koala habitat is a priority and $385,000 has been allocated to fund a koala research program to support and re-establish koalas in suitable areas of vacant koala habitat in Brisbane. • First home buyers will be entitled to a one-year 50% rates discount making housing more affordable so more residents will have the opportunity to own their own home and plan for the future. You can view the full budget on the Council website: www.brisbane.qld.gov.au The budget for The Gap Ward 2019-20 provides funding to deliver on my commitments as well as new projects across The Gap Ward. Funding for local upgrades include: • New playground upgrades in Tennis Avenue Ashgrove and Bowman Park Bardon and further planning and installation of new equipment at Honeyeater Park Upper Kedron & upgrades Page 30 - July 2019, The Hills Echo

The Ferny Report Mark Furner M.P.
State Member for Ferny Grove
Samford Road Users Big Win in 2019 Budget
Samford Road motorists are the big winners out of this year’s state budget with $7.5 million allocated to improve inbound and outbound traffic flow. Many constituents have identified traffic congestion on Samford Road as a major concern for them. I agree and since taking office in 2015 I have lobbied the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) on your behalf to address this issue as a priority. As a result in 2017 TMR undertook the first large-scale traffic flow study on the problematic section of Samford Road between Dawson Parade and the Enoggera Army Barracks. Some changes have already been made on Samford Road as a result of this study – such as increasing the right-hand turn capacity into the Enoggera Barracks of a morning. This has seen a decrease in Samford Road travel times by five minutes on average. More work is still to be done however. That study is now complete and TMR engineers have recommended an upgrade to three of Samford Road’s intersections. The Palaszczuk Government has accepted these recommendations and has allocated millions of dollars in this year’s budget to undertake upgrades to the following sections: Pickering Street. TMR has recommended the removal of the outbound pocket and right-hand signal from Samford Road turning into Pickering Street. This will mean the number of signal changes inbound motorists will need to negotiate will drop from three to two each minute. This change will extend the
span of green signal available to Samford Road motorists by one third. Glenholm Street Outbound Many of us have been caught in a line of traffic held up by a single car wishing to turn right into Glenholm Street of an evening. The recommended changes to the Glenholm intersection will allow for the installation of a right hand turning pocket and the continuation of two lanes outbound so evening traffic will flow more effectively. Osborne Road This intersection has also been identified by TMR with engineers asking for more scope to plan for the changes. $600,000 has been allocated in the budget to enable this planning to progress.
