I’ve been able to talk about things you can’t talk to others about.’ Lieutenant Colonel Bryce Herslet, Commanding Officer of Task Group 629.3’s Task Unit 1, explains that it was during those talks that the soldiers realised who she was. Nine off-duty soldiers then took it upon themselves to renovate her yard. The soldiers ‘were humbled by the opportunity to contribute to a very deserving person,’ reveals Lieutenant Colonel Herslet. They were thanked with a generous country lunch and by Mrs Ellis saying that her son would be very proud of them all.

Local Greyhound Foster Heroes You may recognise the name Mike McGuill from our

regular Arana Hills senior citizens column ‘TidBits’. However, did you know he is also a Greyhound Foster Hero? Mike and his wife Kathys’ foster journey began back in November 2016 with their first foster greyhound, Jessica. The couple found a real love for the breed due to their good nature and gentle demeanor and are now currently fostering their 13th greyhound, Serena. Mike and Kathy's ‘job’ as foster carers is to provide essential care for the dogs along with enrichment activities, such as walking and interaction with new objects and experiences. The couple have many fond memories of their time spent with their various dogs. Their most rewarding memories were of visits to an old friend at St Martins nursing home in Taigum. Prior to their friend passing, they took four greyhounds to see him, with the support of the staff at the home. This not only brought joy to their friend but also to the other residents and the attention-loving greyhounds! Mike and Kathy foster for the Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP) that is run by the Queensland Racing Integrity Commission and is dedicated to finding suitable homes for retired greyhounds. Every greyhound in the program is health checked and behaviorally assessed, de-sexed, wormed and vaccinated. The foster families play a pivotal role in transitioning these canine athletes to pet life through exposing the greyhounds to a variety of situations that are likely to be

Foster carers also implement basic obedience training, such as basic house manners and get the greyhound used to the type of routine that is normal for a Mike and Kathy McGuill with one of their family home. beloved greyhounds. Arana Hills Pharmacy celebrates 40 years

195,000 hours – the amount of time the Arana Hills Day and Night Pharmacy, now TerryWhite Chemmart Arana Hills – has spent servicing the health needs of the Arana Hills community. A significant milestone for any pharmacy business, but none more so than for current co-owner, Rod Garozzo, who first joined the pharmacy as a young and enthusiastic Pharmacist Manager when owners, John Dunsdon and Harry Wippell, opened its doors for the first time on July 16 1980. As Rod reflects on that day more than 40 years ago when he started out, he is amazed at how far the business has come, whilst being proud of the way it has developed over the years to become an integral and innovative part of the Arana Hills community. ‘I feel very privileged indeed to be able to celebrate 40 years in business. It doesn’t seem to be a common occurrence these days, but it has only been possible by having tremendous teams of dedicated employees over the years. Many of whom have been with me for more than 15 years, and even a few have reached the 25 – 30 year mark,’ said Rod. The pharmacy has been operating on average 13 hours a day, 7 days a week, since 1980 when its first owner, John Dunsdon, recognised the need for an extended hour’s pharmacy in the community. The pharmacy has since been trading 94 hours per week, Monday to Friday, only closing its doors on Christmas Day. The only other interruption to trade occurred in 2000 when a fire tore through the pharmacy leaving only a pen and safe remaining. It’s a remarkable achievement that its other current co-owner Karen Brown says is testament to a highly motivated and committed team. ‘I think it is phenomenal that a locally-owned small business can reach 40 years, and it wouldn’t have been possible without John’s vision, Rod’s hard work and dedication, the amazing

www.hillsecho.com

pharmacists and pharmacy assistants, past and present, and of course, our loyal and valued customers. It was great going through Rod’s photos over the time and seeing how much the pharmacy and the industry had evolved. I am excited to see what we can achieve in the next 40 years,’ remarks Karen. Karen’s long-term partnership with Rod began in 2008 when they joined forces alongside Blaine Woods to run TerryWhite Chemmart Samford – itself a highly successful pharmacy business. In 2018, Karen joined Rod in the Arana Hills venture after then part-owner Michael Garrett departed the business. Michael had been Rod’s business partner since 2007 – himself starting out as a pharmacy manager and working his way into ownership like Rod - when founding owner John Dunsdon passed away in 2007. The legacy of John, Harry and Michael, together with Karen and Rod’s innovative vision has turned TerryWhite Chemmart Arana Hills into the recognisable and long-standing health destination. It is today housing The Clinic Hub, The Beauty Hub, and Capsule Cafe. As I come to the later part of my involvement, I feel I have continued the community service objectives that my father instilled in me when he began in 1956 at Garozzo’s Pharmacy Mitchelton. I am very pleased to see Karen take the reins and bring forward new ideas, without losing sight of our role as a community health professional. Of course, our success has been made possible by the countless customers that have remained loyal to us. Many are still in The Hills District and continue to support us today. Some are part of the next generation and this is a very rewarding experience for me personally. So congratulations to all that have been part of this wonderful journey, and may it never end,’ said Rod. Happy 40th Arana Hills and here’s to another 40 great years making a difference to the health of your community!

Back open for business!

News from The Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club

Mitchelton & Districts Gem Club has reopened their workshop which is a relief for members who have been waiting for this to happen. The club is open on Thursday mornings (9am – noon) and Saturday afternoon (1pm – 4pm). There is a limit of four members who can attend each session at one time. As there is limited movement from machine to machine in a lapidary workshop, the club does not have to spend time cleaning/wiping down between machines. In any case, most members will spend their time on one machine for the duration of their session. If you would like to come and look at our workshop, give John or Lloyd a call on 3351 1038 or 3351 2093. The field trips that the club usually makes, especially in the cooler months - have been put on hold due to the uncertainty of access to fossicking areas, as well as the border being closed to the New South Wales fossicking areas.

Beryl Nedwich, member of The Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club, at Chinchilla fossicking area Most members have a stockpile of cutting material which they have accumulated over the years, so it is the newer members that this curtailment of field trips is a disadvantage to. Another usual source of cutting material that members have is Gem Shows held by Lapidary Clubs around the Brisbane region. These, however have all been cancelled for this year. We hope 2021 is a better year for our hobby and people are able to travel around and enjoy the great outdoors in collecting their favourite gemstones!

Arana Netball returns to the court!

Arana Netball are excited to be returning to the court in July.

With restrictions easing, Downey Park Netball Association have announced a ‘9-Week Blast’ which will see many players return to netball. Covid Safe Plans will mean training and games will look a bit different. While this will mean not all players are able to return to netball in 2020, the committee were overwhelmed with the number of Arana members who signed up for the 9-week Blast. This week, the club reached out to their members to get an understanding of whether it was possible for Arana Netball to enter the 9-week competition. Overnight, they were inundated with responses from members who were excited to get back on court. Covid has changed 'normal' for most people and the committee are thrilled to be a part of a return to netball plan that allows their members to get a little bit of 'normal' back. Returning won't be easy, but nothing good ever is. Arana Netball are up for the Janice Geary ‘The Face of COVID’ challenge and are privileged to have Janice Geary as their Covid Safety Officer. You may have seen Janice more now than through a normal netball season and she is fondly referred to as ‘The Face of Covid’. She has appeared on the nightly news and regularly in social media articles - she even made it to the UK, in digital form anyway. As Clinical Nurse Consultant Infection Control, Australia’s oldest and Janice runs the Infection Management Service at The Prince most experienced Charles Hospital and is the subject matter expert for the hospital. With 20 years experience in this area of specialty Sea-Doo and Can-Am nursing, Janice is well placed to be managing and working dealership on the control of COVID since late January. With Janice appointed as the covid safety officer, the club is confident 3633 0123 239 Zillmere Rd, Zillmere that their plans and controls will allow their players a safe return to netball. www.brisbaneseadoocanam.com.au With the level of expertise and enthusiasm the Arana Netball committee brings, there is no doubt that they are going to have an absolute blast returning to the court.

Out and About with the Golden Valley Keperra Lions By Paul Ryan Every year, at the end of June, Lions Clubs change their ‘Board of Directors’ in order to bring in new faces and ideas. It ensures that members grow personally and are happy to put up their hand to help. YOUR TIME IS THE MOST PRECIOUS GIFT YOU CAN GIVE

Volunteering is a great way to contribute to your community. It provides a variety of benefits, including making new friends, sharing skills, getting job-ready and becoming a part of the local community. Many people volunteer in one way or another. In fact, Australian society would be significantly poorer if not for current volunteers. The reason many people choose Lions Clubs International to channel their volunteering time is because your time is spread across many causes, not just a single, worthwhile cause. Causes we help with are on local, national and international scales including;

Savvy buyers move into Everton Hills’ vibrant new address ahead of expected shortage

Everton Hills’ newest community has welcomed its founding residents as property experts predict a rush of buyers for townhome developments in suburbs neighbouring Brisbane’s boundary.

The sold-out first stage of The Hills Residences, a collection of contemporary family terrace homes only 11km north-west of the Brisbane CBD, has been completed, with the first residents having moved into their new homes. With 98 per cent of the Sunland Group parkland community now sold, only limited opportunities remain in the final stages of the development with prices from $525,000. The stage one settlements have coincided with a Brisbane City Council decision to effectively ban such townhome communities from the city. The controversial legislation has seen the council ban townhomes from low-density-zoned Brisbane suburbs, with the Property Council of Australia, UDIA and even State Government Planning Minister Cameron Dick expressing concerns about the impact on housing choice, diversity, affordable living and market confidence. However, with townhome stock set to dry up in Brisbane, savvy buyers are turning their attention to medium-density developments, like The Hills Residences in Moreton Bay, and other similar developments within Ipswich and Logan suburbs that are close to the capital city’s boundaries. Wolter Consulting Group Executive Director and town planner Natalie Rayment said she expected demand for townhome developments in suburbs such as Everton Hills to rise in the wake of the new legislation. “It is a supply and demand issue and the fact is Brisbane’s supply of new townhomes is set to dry up,” she said. “A community such as The Hills Residences will prove extremely attractive for buyers because it is so close to Brisbane. When someone drives from Everton Park into Everton Hills, they would not even notice they have left Brisbane and entered Moreton Bay. “Townhomes not only provide first-time buyers with an excellent entry into the property market but allow established residents to downsize in the suburb they love and where they have made social connections. “They provide an affordable option for people seeking a shorter commute to the CBD and, in an increasingly timepoor society, require lower maintenance than a house while

Vanessa Chow secured a townhome in the first stage of The Hills Residences allowing residents to continue to enjoy having a small backyard and shared access to green space.” Savvy 19-year-old investor Vanessa Chow, who secured a townhome in the first stage of The Hills Residences, said she was excited to be one of the first residents to move into her new home. “I’ve grown up in city environments for most of my life so I was really drawn to The Hills Residences due to its natural setting, close to trees,” she said. “The style of the home suited what I was looking for and I liked the design layout of the kitchen, living and private courtyard on ground level.” Miss Chow said the townhome was her first off-the-plan purchase and the team guiding her through the experience had been “very helpful”. Andrew Roubicek - Director, Residential of Colliers International, which is marketing The Hills Residences - said the majority of their clients had been local first-home buyers or downsizers looking to invest in new properties. “With a mix of three-bedroom plus multi-purpose room designs, there has been a lot of positive feedback about the project’s unique design, quality and location,” he said. “Smart buyers are also aware of the huge potential for capital growth opportunities given the impact of Brisbane City Council’s decision to limit future townhome supply.” The total value of The Hills Residences’ stage one settlements is expected to reach $9.4 million, with settlements for stage two due to commence this month [JULY]. The community presents a collection of contemporary terrace homes surrounding a landscaped central park and adjoining a large nature reserve. Homes feature a variety of three-bedroom plus multi-purpose room designs, complete with two large bathrooms, powder room and fully landscaped private courtyard. The Hills Residences display suite is located at 120 Bunya Rd, Everton Hills and open Wednesday to Friday 12pm to 3pm, Saturday and Sunday 10am to 4pm or by appointment. Music students shine online at Mt Maria College

Mt Maria College has been filled with music as Mt Maria Music students prepare for their very first virtual ensemble concert. Typically held at the end of each semester for College families, COVID-19 restrictions have meant the ensemble concert will be streamed online for families to enjoy in their own Beginner Band, Chamber Strings, Wind Band, Percussion Ensemble, and the College Choir. While ensemble rehearsals have looked (and sounded!) very different this term, Music Program Leader, Ms Alex Khafagi, is confident the students are ready to shine online. ‘The students have been rehearsing online and in person all term and are thrilled to be showcasing their hard work to the College community,’ said Ms Khafagi. Mt Maria Music has grown significantly over the last year, with now more than 200 students enrolled in the College’s Instrumental Program. The College’s various ensembles regularly perform at community events and in local festivals, including the Queensland Catholic Schools & Colleges Music Festival and RockFest. Snippets of the Mt Maria Music virtual concert are now available for viewing on the College website. Head to www. mtmaria.qld.edu.au for more details.

Restoration reveals an intriguing history

Monthly news from the Brisbane Tramway Museum and the Ferny Grove Men’s Shed Yes, we are open again! The Queensland Railways initially operated the line for As from the 5th July, we are open every Sunday from 1pm to 4pm to take passengers. Naturally, COVID safety procedures will be strictly enforced. Fares are: Adults $15, Children $8, Concession $12 and a Family Pass $45. However, we don’t only restore trams at the museum, we also restore tramway memorabilia. This story was written by member Warwick Lee about a part of Brisbane’s transport history that most people would have never heard about . .

The Belmont Bell

The restoration of the Belmont Bell is a fitting tribute to longserving past member Bob Deskins. Bob passed away in 2019 after a long illness. As a relatively young man, while working in Central Queensland, Bob visited the Isis Sugar Mill where he noticed a bell. He was told it had been removed from a scrapped Baldwin Steam Engine and that the bell was formerly used as the lunch bell for the mill. Bob had a passion for collecting historic rail and tramway memorabilia and was given the bell. His research confirmed that the bell was the original from the Baldwin Steam Engine used on the Belmont Tramway. The bell remained in his garage until he presented it to the museum shortly before he died.

the Shire but later the Shire operated the tramway with its own engine and cars. It was very expensive to operate with little goods and passenger traffic. The line was closed at the beginning of 1915 and its engines and rolling stock was sold by the end of that year. Following public uproar, the line was reopened in 1916 by the Belmont Shire Council and was operated by the Queensland Railway with small engines such as the A13. However, the tramway continued to operate at a loss and, due to track and bridge deterioration, the line was closed for the second time in 1924. In 1925, when the Belmont Shire became part of the City of Brisbane, the line was again reopened following a substantial upgrade. The tramway was operated by the Brisbane City Council, but financial losses continued and the line was permanently closed in October 1926.

Baldwin Steam Engine

Belmont Tramway

On the 25th May 1912, the Belmont Shire Council opened the Belmont Tramway line. This line ran from Norman Park station on the Cleveland line of the Queensland Railway to Belmont, with stops at Belmont Junction, Seven Hills, Mount Bruce, City View, Mayfield Road, Carina, Springfield (Baynes Brothers sid-ings) and Bulimba Creek. Costing £20,000 to build, the line was a light 3' 6" gauge railway and 6.9 km in length. Top speeds reached 24 km/h but slowed to 16 km/h when crossing bridges. Although the line was 3' 6" gauge, the railway line was built and operated under the Tramways Act because only the Queensland Government could operate trains in Queensland.

Baldwin Steam Engine Composite Car: The Belmont Bell is located on the roof. Source acknowledgement: State Library of Queensland - John Oxley Library In May 1912, the Belmont Shire Council purchased an enclosed Baldwin Steam Engine from the then Baldwin Locomotive Works of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States and three carriages. The Class 1 (Locobase 13755) 0-4-2 engine was built in January 1911 (works number 33935) and was the only one of its type built. The Baldwin Steam Engine was sold to the Isis Sugar Mill in 1915 and later was acquired by the Queensland Public Works. The Baldwin Works was a major manufacturer of locomotive engines of all classes and operated from 1825 to 1856 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, before moving to Eddystone, Pennsylvania where it closed in 1972. The Brisbane Tramway Museum is proudly supported by Brisbane City Council.

Over the past 40 years we have presented a great variety of plays to our local audiences from comedy through to drama, murder mysteries and musical revues. Comedy has proven to be what our patrons prefer and what we enjoy staging. A well remembered comment after one of our musicals was ‘They act better than they sing, don't they?’ Ouch! I can't help name dropping a few of our comedy favourites. There was The Farndale series; ‘Move Over Mrs Markham’, ‘Boeing-Boeing’; ‘Not Now Darling’; ‘Darling Mr London’; ‘Who's in Bed With the Butler?’ and ‘Blithe Spirit’ to name but a few. It's always good to be able to do home grown plays like ‘Level 12’ by our own Kate Beck, or ‘Hot Spots’ by Pauline Davies. Hugh O'Brien has provided us with many laughs with plays like ‘Love and Other Flushes’ and ‘Anything But Barefoot Bowls’. Perhaps there may be some budding playwrights out there who would like us to read their work. We'd love to hear from you. The Hills Players hopes to have more information on what’s planned for the second half of the year, in time for the next edition of the Hills Echo. The track is pretty good for little ones

Mat has worked with a lot of business leaders helping them build a holistic growth strategy that aligns their marketing and sales teams. “Often, business owners only start thinking about marketing once the leads dry up and they experience a downturn in revenue — excessive competitor noise, new players in the market or global pandemic. We typically know the business is good at what they do and offer exceptional products and services, but their ad-hoc marketing plan is not cutting through the noise anymore as savvy competitors amplify their marketing efforts.

Remember Saturday night at the movies?

From the Enoggera and Districts Historical Society

Nowadays, most of us in the community view new movie releases at large ‘concrete and steel’ multiplexes, or by downloading them via the internet or the variety of streaming services on offer.

But there was a time when small suburban cinemas and larger drive-in theatres The old Gaythorne Cinema were dotted throughout Brisbane’s suburbs – becoming THE place when enjoying a great flick. Who out there remembers the wonderful Gaythorne Cinema? It started as The Civic Theatre in 1938 and continued showing films up until its final day on 4 February 2004. What about the Mitchelton Picture Theatre in Osborne Road? It’s now the site of a pet supplies business. It was started in the 1920s by the Nugent family, before becoming a roller-skating rink from 1959 to 1983. And of course, everyone would have a memory of the Keperra Drive-in, located where the Kings Park housing estate now is off Settlement Road. The drive-in ran from 1966 to 1998. And what about the iconic Crystal Cinema at Windsor? It ran from 1920 to 1999. Crystal Cinema, Windsor. 1920-1999 Who else out there saw ‘The Gods must be Crazy’ here during the 1990s? Treat me like everyone else Arana Hills Library By Susanne Jones, Just Better Care Brisbane North ‘People assume that I have an intellectual disability just because I’m non-verbal. They also get up in my personal space and speak to me as if I’m a child. I have had instances where they dismiss me completely. I want to be treated like everyone else.’ 25-year-old Emma has cerebral palsy atypical and ALS 2, an extremely rare degenerative faulty gene disease. As someone who has experienced firsthand both the challenges and opportunities of non-verbal communication, Emma has offered best practice tips for how to support and communicate with someone who is non-verbal: 1. Talk to me: Just because someone is nonverbal doesn’t mean they don’t understand what is said to them. Many people who are non-verbal do comprehend spoken words and can respond using other forms of communication, such as facial expressions, body language, and written responses. 2. Recognise visual cues: The more time you spend with someone who is non-verbal, the more you will begin to pick up on their expressions and body language. As you recognise these cues, you will start to figure out what they mean and how to respond accordingly. 3. Use a buddy system: One of the quickest ways to get to know someone and how they like things to be done is to team up with a family member of theirs or an existing support person. As a buddy, they can guide you on best practice as you get to know them. 4. Find common interests: One thing Emma appreciates is uncovering shared interests and activities to enjoy together, such as music, television shows, films, games and hobbies. 5. Don’t make assumptions: Having a disability doesn’t define who a person is or what they can achieve. People living with disability need support from people who they can trust, and who believe in them. Don’t make assumptions about what they can and cannot do. If in doubt, ask them.

Post Master Generals Department (PMG) linesman Peter McGregor’s area was between Ferny Grove, Dayboro and surrounding districts. A special line was constructed to his home at Everton Park so the PMG could contact him. During Peter’s working years (1940-1961) home telephones were few and scattered; services were supplied by overhead wires. The service to Dayboro came from the city via Samford Road to Church Road, Mitchelton, then along Church Road, then along the railway line to Dayboro. The telegraph line carried all the trunk lines between Brisbane and Dayboro, as well as lines for the railway morse code and other services. Direct dialling came only as far as Ferny Grove. Calls to further out had to be made through the Trunk Line Room at the GPO, Queen St, Brisbane, where a telephonist contacted the nearest exchange to the subscriber being A direct dialling telephone called. There the local exchange operator connected the call to the number. Trunk calls were timed in increments of three minutes. The caller had to agree to extend the call. Besides maintaining the main line, Peter repaired faults to smaller exchanges and individual subscribers. Some causes of faults were lightning strikes, fallen branches, and bird strikes. Finding faults in districts where the line ran along the roadsides was usually easy- looking while driving slowly. The main lines were a different story as there were limited places where the railway line could be accessed. From these points, Peter had to walk and carry all his tools to the halfway point to the next access then walk back to the truck, drive to the next access point and walk back- always hoping for the fault to be found quickly. Peter was called to the Camp Mt rail disaster to erect emergency phone lines for emergency services use. By the time Peter retired, changes in telephone maintenance were occurring. No Ordinary Girl

Meet Tamara Nowitzki, an author, former Australian Paralympian and World Champion swimmer.

Judging by these credentials, you can agree that she is ‘no ordinary girl’. However, what makes Tamara even more extraordinary is that she suffers from severe physical and mental disabilities. Tamara was born with Cerebal Palsy. At the age of 25, she was also diagnosed with DopaTamara Nowitzki Responsive Dystonia, a condition similar to Parkinson’s Disease. Additionally, she suffers from depression, anxiety and obsessive compulsive disorder. Despite her diagnoses’s, Tamara swam for Australia at both the 1996 and 2000 Paralympic Games, winning a silver medal in the 100m Breaststroke at the Sydney 2000 Games. She also

won a silver medal in this event at the 1998 World Swimming Championships held in Christchurch, New Zealand. Not only has this incredible lady excelled in the the sporting fields, but she has also penned her own autobiography called ‘No Ordinary Girl’. Tamara is passionate about encouraging positive community acceptance and has written this story about her life in the hope of de-stigmatizing mental illness and encouraging an inclusive approach to these common illnesses. The book follows her journey with severe depression, anxiety and OCD; how she has used strategies to help overcome these mental health challenges and live the life she seeks. ‘Although I have faced many difficult and unknown challenges through my mental illness, I know that there is always hope — hope of overcoming struggles and enjoying my life,’ tells Tamara. ‘My many admissions in hospital have taught me that reaching out and asking for help at the most difficult of times is the only way forward. So, if you are facing challenges or difficulties, I deeply encourage you to reach out for help and move forward.’ You can find local support group, the Samford Health And Wellbeing Support Group on Facebook at www.facebook. com/samfordhealthandwellbeingsupportgroup/

Busy Behind the Scenes! from the Arana Hills VIEW Club

As you are all aware our meetings have not started up again yet, but behind the scenes planning is still going on. I hope you have all been keeping busy with whatever projects you are undertaking and are starting to venture out (with the necessary precautions). It was wonderful to read in our latest newsletter how much money had been raised to support our ‘Learning for Life’ students by donations from members. It certainly means when we are back in full swing, we will be able to enjoy each other’s company without the stress of fundraising straight away. Don’t forget to keep all those books you have been reading for our book swap when we are back. I know I have a few, so our choices should be plentiful. We also wanted to share this image of two of our ladies who attended a function at Government House earlier this year to recognise 60 years of VIEW Clubs in Australia. We are looking forward to catching up with everyone soon! Dorothy and Bonnie at Government House earlier this year

COUNSELLOR’S COLUMN with Robin Botic

Dear Robin, I am 34 years old, single and desperate. I have had a few long term relationships, but nothing of any significance in the last four years, just a number of month or so stands. I did not see the point of pursuing a relationship if I did not see any long term potential. My dream was to get married and to have a horde of children. I have tried those internet dating sites, speed dating, dance clubs. I have tried everything. I am getting very depressed about this. The only up is that I love my job, but it is not one where I am likely to meet Mr Right. I have great friends but most of them are married or in relationships. Even more depressing is that my last free girlfriend recently hooked up with someone and now I really have no one to go out with. I am too old to go clubbing or do single hangouts. The majority of my friends are really busy with their young families and don’t have the time or money to do things with me. I tried a cruise ship holiday by myself, and that was a disaster. The weekends can be so long and I am becoming obsessed with the thought that this is it! I will just have this empty boring life. My dream of a man and babies is in shatters. Even if I meet someone I will be too old to have children. I am just feeling so lonely. I am running out of time and it is putting so much pressure on me that I am afraid I might just say ‘yes’ to the next man that comes along. What is wrong with me? Am I too fussy? How do I get out of this awful mindset? Tania Dear Tania, In summary, to get out of any depressing mindset, clarifying why you are thinking what you are thinking is the first step. The second step is noticing the feelings that are associated with these thoughts. Develop techniques of mindfulness and conscious awareness that you are having these thoughts and choosing, with the aid of strategies, how to lessen the effect of them, so that you can create distance between that conscious witnessing part in yourself and the thought feeling body you have been obsessing with. With practice, you are then able to put your energy and focus into thoughts and activities that will add value to your life. Clarify what the thoughts are that are causing you this sense of desperation. These are the common ones. Is it about not having enough time. If you don’t achieve this goal is there something wrong with you? Do you think you are a failure as a women,

not worthy of being loved, that you are left out, a reject? Are you too fussy? Sometimes fussy gets disguised as lack of self-worth. Is proof of success in your own eyes and of others measured by the achievement of your dreams? Notice the feeling these thoughts bring up, notice which thoughts the strongest feelings are attached to. Doing this helps develop our awareness of what we need to be mindful about. We determine our worth by many different things. When we need our self worth validated by the acquisition or achievement of these things we can create problems for ourselves. When we do this it is not our validity that we should be questioning but the measurement we are choosing to validate ourselves with. It is time then to examine what it is that we really value in ourselves and our life, not in the way we think that this can be expressed. For you it seems like your Plan A for this expression can only be through marriage and children. What about Plan B? Already you realize how much misery your obsession with these thoughts is causing you. How much of your life do you want to spend doing this or do you want to make the best you can of what is already available to you? Put your dreams aside for the moment and clarify what it is that you value in yourself and life. Do you want to be the most loving, compassionate, articulate, creative etc. person you can be? What other goals can you see as being worthwhile? What are your passions, things that you enjoy, travel, physical, creative, intellectual pursuits? When you have done this, list down the ways you can go about starting to achieve this now. Having an alternative plan of action to choose is what we need when we notice our obsessive mind set and its current behaviours starting up again. Remember the more you focus on something the more it will grow. Empowerment is responsibly choosing what you want that to be. Robin

WARD HAPPENINGS WITH

Cr Steven Toomey

Councillor for The Gap Ward

Lord Mayor Adrian Shrinner’s Budget 2020–2021

The Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner handed down a $3.18 billion Budget for the 2020–2021 financial year. He said “this Budget is all about Brisbane’s recovery. It will provide relief for ratepayers and inject funds into the right areas to stimulate the economy.” This budget continues to deliver programs that: • • • •

invest in infrastructure and services; rebuild Brisbane’s economy and create more local jobs by increasing the number of Council contracts going to local businesses; support our local clubs and sporting groups; and invest in green space by increasing our conversation and improving diversity.

The budget for The Gap Ward 2020–2021 will deliver major infrastructure projects across the ward. Funding has been allocated for the replacement and maintenance of ten bridge structures including Gresham Street bridge in Ashgrove and a new pedestrian bridge at Beech Street Ferny Grove to link Upper Kedron. The Lord Mayor’s Smoother Suburban Road program provides over $3.2million of road resurfacing to be completed in this year’s ward budget. This funding reinforces the Lord Mayor’s commitment to tackling real action on traffic congestion. We are revitalising our suburbs and fast tracking park and footpath projects throughout the ward as well as investing in a ‘Greener Suburbs program’ which will support landscaping and tree planting activities across the ward.

Green Happenings in The Gap Ward This budget will invest more than $6 million in the continuation of the Bushland Acquisition Program. Council exceeded the last term milestone of 750 hectares over four years in 2019. A further $402,000 has been allocated to fund a comprehensive koala research program to help establish Brisbane as the koala capital of Australia. To ensure the safety of our native flora and fauna, please keep your dogs on leash when walking in our parks and natural areas.

The 2020–2021 budget delivers a small surplus budget and the first rate rise freeze in 35 years. As a result of strong economic management council is delivering: • • • • •

first home buyers rebate; continuation of the full and part pension rates rebate; one-off owner occupier $250 rates rebate for home owners receiving job seeker; every residential home in Brisbane will receive 10 x 100kg tip vouchers; and free bigger yellow top bin and green top bin and a free compost bin or worm farm

I will be listing all the projects that have been funded for The Gap Ward on my website www.steventoomey.com.au If you wish to discuss any aspect of this budget please do not hesitate to contact me at the ward office. I look forward to working on delivering all the budget items throughout the ward.

Everton News from your State Member for Everton TIM MANDER

The LNP have vowed to overhaul the child safety system if elected to Government on October 31. The avoidable tragedy of Mason Jett Lee exposed fundamental failures in the current child safety system and further cases of shocking child neglect. The system is completely broken, and the cycle of tragedies and failures must come to an end. A stand-alone agency called the Child Protection Force will be established by an LNP Government, replacing the current and broken Department of Child Safety. The overhaul will include: Child Protection Officers on hand 24 hours a day vulnerable kids aren’t only in danger from 9-5pm and the protection of kids would be a 24-hour operation Compulsory drug testing with no second chances to combat escalating drug addiction and to hold parents accountable for caring for their children A new squad of police investigators will be called in to clear back logs and overhaul investigation procedures for high-risk cases Payments will be extended to foster carers for children in care aged to 21 yrs The use of adoption with a priority for vulnerable children under three years of age

JULY 2020

from the Arana Hills & Districts Senior Citizens Club Inc The Hills Community Centre, 291 Dawson Parade, Arana Hills

At the moment, as with a lot of other organisations, our club has ceased meeting since the onset of the coronavirus as many of our members are in the age group susceptible to catching the virus. Our committee met on the 18th June to review the situation and it was decided that the committee meets once a month (on the 3rd Thursday) to assess the current changes. One of the difficulties we will face will be the social distancing, which I feel will be with us for a while. In the mean time, be careful and stay healthy. Dickson News from your Federal Member for Dickson PETER DUTTON

A Message from Peter In recent weeks, the Prime Minister has announced the next steps of the Morrison Government’s JobMaker program. Through Jobmaker, the Government is bringing forward funding for shovel-ready projects, building roads, bridges and transport links our cities need. We want to create jobs and build for our future. To help get this done we have created a deregulation taskforce. The deregulation taskforce will ensure that where legislation is required, it is implemented with the lightest touch – that it is designed and applied in the most timely way, with the least cost on business. This will help get Commonwealth approval times down from 3.5 years to just 21 months on average. The Taskforce will engage widely with business, industry groups, policy agencies and regulators as well as other key stakeholders to deliver high quality policy advice to Government in the two new priority areas and reduce red tape. There are a number of federal government initiatives available to support small businesses doing it tough through this time, including an extension of the $150,000 instant asset writeoff. More information these measures can be found at www. business.gov.au I have also launched a Facebook Page to support local businesses called ‘Dickson – Open for Business’. Many local business owners are using the page to showcase services and raise awareness. Go to https://www.facebook.com/groups/ DicksonOpenForBusiness/ to find the page.

As life slowly returns to normal, please let me know if there is anything I can do to be of assistance. I would love to hear from you. Yours sincerely Peter Mandatory sentencing for child sex offenders No group in our community is more deserving of our protection than our children. The Attorney General and I, along with the Prime Minister and others, have worked incredibly hard to introduce mandatory sentencing for child sex offenders and I am proud to say mandatory sentences will be brought into law. It has been a frustrating process - the Coalition Government has tried for three years to introduce mandatory sentencing for child sex offenders and finally on Tuesday 16 June received support from the Labor Party to introduce the laws. Given that last year, 39 per cent of convicted commonwealth child-sex offenders did not spend a single day in jail, it is extremely disappointing that Anthony Albanese’s team fought for so long to stop these laws passing the Parliament. The new Bill will vastly improve justice outcomes and community safety through: • Mandatory minimum sentences for serious child sex offences and for recidivist offenders • A presumption against bail for serious and repeat offenders to keep them off the streets • Increased maximum penalties across the spectrum of child sex offences, including up to life imprisonment for the most serious offences • Presumptions in favour of cumulative sentences and actual imprisonment • Ensuring that all sex offenders, upon release from custody, are adequately supervised and subject to appropriate rehabilitative conditions • Preventing courts from discounting sentences on the basis of good character where this is used to facilitate the crime. What’s important to you? I’m working hard to make our community even better but I can’t do it on my own. I need your help to make sure we get the priorities right for our community. With your help, and by working together, I know we can get the upgrades, facilities and opportunities our community needs to be even better. Please get in touch with me at peter.dutton.mp@aph.gov.au or 3205 9977 to let me know your priorities. Or you can drop in to my office at 3/199 Gympie Road in Strathpine during business hours. Or visit my website www.peterdutton.com. au for more information

The Ferny Report Mark Furner M.P.

State Member for Ferny Grove

A thousand school zones and counting Schoolchildren across Queensland are now safer than ever with the 1000th installation of flashing school zone signs since 2015. St William's Primary School in Grovely will be the next local school to receive a flashing school zone sign upgrade on Whitby Street! I dropped by St Williams recently to deliver the good news to principal Nick Fogarty (pictured). Kids can behave unpredictably on and Mark Furner MP with outside St. around roads. School Williams Primary School Grovely with their Principal Nick Fogarty zones play an important role in actively reminding drivers of the change in speed limits and to slow down in case they need to react quickly. For more information on flashing school zone signs, visit www. tmr.qld.gov.au/Safety/School-road-safety.

Samford Road update From mid-July to late September, weather permitting, night works will take place on Samford Road at the intersection of Pickering Street. This may cause some temporary traffic changes and lane closures during the build so please allow extra time when planning your travel and follow the direction of traffic controllers and signs. The intersection upgrade, identified as part of the traffic flow study I had commissioned in 2017 and budgeted by the Palaszczuk Government in 2019, has been fast-tracked as part of the Safer Roads Sooner program. Transport and Main Roads (TMR) Traffic engineers will remove the right-turn pocket from Samford Road into Pickering Street, change the signalisation of the slip lane on Pickering Street to increase pedestrian safety, and optimise the traffic signals to improve traffic flow. TMR’s road improvements page for the greater Samford Road improvements project will go live shortly and the Department are looking for community input regarding the planned intersection improvements at Glen Holm Street and Osborne Road, Mitchelton. Go to www.tmr.qld.gov.au/samfordroad or email metropolitanregion@tmr.qld.gov.au to provide feedback.
