The Community Unites for Harlie
Capturing the fun at The Grove Sports Club fundraiser. (Photos courtesy of Linda Wiseman)
At just 18 months old, Harlie was diagnosed with spastic quadriplegia cerebral palsy. Doctors said Harlie would never be able to sit, crawl, talk or walk.
Six years have been spent in physical therapy and various other medical specialists’ offices. Harlie is now confined to a wheelchair for independence and spends around 30 minutes a week in a walking frame to stretch her legs. Sadly as Harlie’s tiny body grows, her muscles tighten and become more painful so she spends less time in her walker and more time laying down to relieve the pain after all day in a wheelchair. Harlie was approved for Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) surgery which is only available in the U.S.A. SDR is surgery that relieves approximately 95% of the painful spasticity from the body and daily intense therapy post-surgery, means patients have the opportunity to finally make physical gains they would not otherwise have the ability to do, such as walk. Harlie is scheduled for this surgery on 15th August 2017. Unfortunately the costs of overseas travel, the surgery itself and post-operative therapy are enormous. Family, friends and the local Ferny Hills community came together to establish the Harlie Russell Foundation. Since mid last year, the foundation has been raising funds to allow Harlie to travel to the USA and receive this life changing surgery. With a $120,000 target for the August journey and further fundraising upon Harlie’s return for therapy and home modifications, the foundation has been reaching out to the Ferny Hills community for support. Currently, the Harlie Russell Foundation has raised over $56,000. On 25th June a huge community effort took place at The Grove Sports Club, Ferny Grove to raise much needed funds for the foundation. A large crowd turned out to enjoy Barefoot Bowls, sausage sizzle, live music and a multitude of raffle prizes donated by businesses within the area. The day raised $4,200 for the foundation. Keep up to date on fundraising events and Harlie’s progress at www. harlierussellfoundation.org or www. facebook.com/stepup4harlie . Donations can also be made via these links. www.hillsecho.com

The Salvation Army Aged Care Plus has recently announced plans to develop a new $20-million dollar state-of-the-art residential aged care centre in the Hills District. The Centre will care for 80 older Australians and will deliver all aged care services including specialist dementia, mental health, spiritual, respite and palliative care. This is a much needed service in the Hills District as the ageing population continues to rise. This development comes after the Aged Care Approval Rounds (ACAR) in which the government is supporting ageing in Australia through the approval of nearly 10,000 new residential aged care licenses. The new residential aged care centre will be a place to call home for older Australians with vibrant living spaces and homely environments. It is anticipated the Centre will open its doors in 2020. A location for the centre is still to be finalised.
That’s an ace for the Samford community
Samford Tennis Club’s vision to build two more tennis courts to accommodate an increase in participation in the community, is one step closer thanks to funding from the Turnbull Government and Moreton Bay Regional Council.
Moreton Bay Regional Council constructed four tennis courts, a shared clubhouse, internal roads and car parking at Samford Parklands in 2010; however increased participation meant more tennis courts were required to keep up with demand. Federal Member for Dickson Peter Dutton said he was proud his Government was able to support the Samford Tennis Club with $100,000 towards the project. Moreton Bay Regional Council and Samford Tennis Club will each contribute $50,000 towards the $400,000 project. ‘Council values active and healthy communities; so by adding two more tennis courts, taking the total to six at Samford Parklands, we will be creating more recreational opportunities,’ a council spokesman said. There are 720 members at the club at the moment, but that figure is expected to rise given the high-level of interest from people wanting to play tennis outside of Samford. Construction is expected to commence in early 2018. BAB R IES OPE OOM N NO W!

Tears in my office
‘Let me ask you, what would you have done in this situation?
Cath 50 year old lady, had two children 13 and 15 years, works fulltime, been married and recently gone through a difficult, blaming divorce plus had breast cancer and a mastectomy, gone through radium and come out the other side. She had had enough! She had soldiered on through bad times, support from her family and friends but now she was juggling life, balancing work, and trying to become healthy again but required SUPPORT. The reason why I share this with you is we all want a happy future, Cath was no different but needed to let go of her angry past, to have her own fairytale story which she always wanted. A melting moment for me was when she shared mixed emotions from her life as tears streamed down her cheeks, tears she didn’t realise until now, tears of relief that she can move forward, tears of her loss and tears of joy. Over the years Cath had protected herself with a stiff armour to show her strong front and soldier on. Possibly it was for her children, herself or for others but now it is time to gradually peel off this protection shell to discover her true self. Cath is a survivor and was prepared to do what it takes to healthily love her life again. To see her children, grow up and possible grandchildren to come. This was the start of creating her natural habits in her health journey. To achieve this her whole body needed to be alkalised, nurtured through treatment including emotional release of her angry mindset to create inner peace, she took time out to discover the original Cath and release the shackles that weighed her down. Today life is a testimonial no longer a test. Charmaine Renaud BHSc. - Banksia Womens Healing Centre

Young Picassos Artwork on Display
The children of Willmore Kindergarten currently have some artwork displayed at VC Fruit which is located at 18-20 Ferny Way, Ferny Hills. Chinu and his lovely wife have kindly allowed the children to display their work in an effort to show the children how they are part of a community, and show the community, the contribution young children make. The children were asked,‘What would you like your community to know that you can do?’ They have drawn pictures including: ‘I can ride my bike without training wheels.’ ‘I know how sausages are made.’ ‘I can write my own books.’ To name a few. We would love you to go down and see the children’s work and email any thoughts or questions to the children at willmorekindy@bigpond.com. Young children are often underestimated. We have to remember that they are our first citizens and that as such they see things with fresh eyes. They make new theories, observations and interpretations of their world. If we really listen we can learn so much from them.

Albany Creek, A bit of history
Albany Creek was originally known as Chinaman's Creek.
The change of name to Albany Creek was made in 1885 at the request of local petitioners who stated that no 'Chinaman' lived there and apparently preferred the new name for sentimental reasons. The first permanent settler in the area was James Cash. He built a hut near the South Pine River in 1849, and his name is remembered by Cash's Crossing where South Pine Road intersects with the river. Farm selections were taken up in the 1860s, beginning with timber cutting and mixed farming. Dairying later became the principal occupation. Chinamans Creek primary school was opened in 1874 (today Albany Creek State School), a Methodist church in about 1866 and a village store in about 1905. The cemetery (1873) is the resting place of several pioneer families. Albany Creek remained a village until the 1960s, when metropolitan Brisbane expanded towards it. The population then doubled at about ten-yearly intervals.

Brisbane Kokoda Challenge 2017
On Saturday 3 June, 15 teams from Ferny Grove SHS participated in the 48km Brisbane Kokoda Challenge.
Each team was made up of four students along with their teacher leader. Ferny Grove has been entering the Kokoda Challenge since 2010, firstly in the Gold Coast event and from this year the event held in Brisbane. The roots of the Kokoda Challenge lay in the Kokoda Campaign of World War II, and the bravery and sacrifice our Australian Diggers displayed to hold off the Japanese invasion in Papua New Guinea. The part our heroes played almost certainly protected Australia from direct invasion. The Kokoda challenge creates experiences that have the potential to reshape character, reset personal limits, reconnect people with each other and nature, and help them discover the true meaning of courage, endurance, mateship and sacrifice. FGSHS teams have been training extremely hard over the past couple of months in readiness for the challenge. As a result of their efforts, all teams completed the challenge within the time frame with their first team finishing in 12th place in just under 9 hours. FGSHS have seven students participating in the Kokoda Challenge Youth Program and they will remain in training for the 96km Kokoda Challenge (Gold Coast) on 15 and 16 July 2017.

Mitchelton Garden Club
The August meeting of the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club is at the Enoggera Memorial Hall, corner of Wardell and Trundle Streets, Enoggera on Thursday 3rd August. The guest speaker, Kath Stumer, will talk about Caladiums. Originating from the Amazon region, this exotic plant produces a beautiful display of coloured leaves in the warmer months of the year. Each variety of colour has been named, e.g. Bullock’s Heart has a large, deep red heart-shaped leaf edged in green. Caladiums grow well in the garden in a protected shady spot, or in pots, and they like a rich soil, but care with watering is necessary. They belong to the Arum family and are called aroids. It’s interesting to note that other members of this tropical family include the calla lily, anthuriums, monstera deliciosa, spatiphyllum (peace lily), etc. As the weather becomes cooler towards autumn, the caladium leaves start to wither and at that time a little potash and fertilizer should be
given to them. You may have heard people mention caladium ‘bulbs,’ but the plant dies down and forms a corm which remains dormant until about spring. At the club meeting Kath Stumer’s talk will disclose much more. It’s hard to realise it’s July and almost mid-winter. Give an application of liquid fertiliser to flowering annual seedlings and vegetables this month. Take care with watering Poinsettias and Snowflake bushes which are at their peak now, because if they become too moist, it can cause poor flowering and leaf drop. If necessary, be sure to hose the frost off your plants before the sun rises too high, to avoid frost burn. The meeting commences immediately after morning tea which is served at 9.45 a.m. The hall is wheelchair accessible and close to public transport, viz. Enoggera rail and bus routes 599, 590, 350 and 390. For more information, please phone Pat, the president, on 3356 1256.

Counsellor’s Column with Robin Botic
Dear Robin, My wife and I separated six months ago, it was painful and conflictual. We have two children for which I have custody four days a fortnight. Some months ago I meet another woman. I was careful about how I introduced the children to my new partner. Actually, I thought I was being pretty good about it, taking it slow and considering their feelings. They like Penny, my wife however, hates her. Penny stayed over a few weeks ago and on Sunday morning my eldest; a girl aged 12, came in very early in the morning, and found us in bed. She was surprised as we were, and a little upset. She seemed ok about it, but obviously she spoke to my wife. And my wife went off to me like a bomb. I was an irresponsible parent, I was teaching my children bad morals, Penny was a slut, she was not going to let the children come if Penny was there etc. etc. My children are both now really upset and withdrawn from me. I don‘t see what I have done that is that wrong. I am sure that my wife is bagging me endlessly to them. I think it is none of her business what I am doing in my personal life now, but I am concerned for the children and wonder what I can do about my relationship with them. Signed Robert. Dear Robert, It is often an extremely difficult time for ex’s and children when one partner enters a new relationship. Some handle it better than others, your ex-wife is one of those that does not. The strength of her reactivity can be due to the feeling that this really signals the end of the relationship with you, and she is left out in the cold. Self esteem often determined by ‘who has left whom’ can be at rock bottom, the courage to enter a new relationship is low and the fear that there will not be someone else for them is high. But, you are right; it is none of your wife’s business. Who you are with and what you are doing with them; unless [through neglect or abuse] it affects the welfare of the children. Children have to make huge adjustments in these situations and from what you say you have been doing your best to consider the emotional impact on them. Always, when there is a new relationship there are emotional energy shifts, while your children are still loved, the intensity that a new romantic relationship generates, is felt
as a movement away from them. It is a natural occurrence. The children were not around during the same ‘new in love stage’ you experienced before they were born. They came into a pre-existing dynamic. With re-partnering and blended families, children (as well as adults) have to adjust to all these emotional shifts. Sometimes the shift can be experienced as a loss of love, and this for them can obviously be very upsetting, as they are already in a very vunerable position after the break up of their family. It is not easy. Reaffirming your love and care, making sure you give attention to them and listening to their concerns is vital. If you have not already done so I would find an appropriate time to talk to them by yourself. It might be advisable to have them on your own for that weekend. Reaffirm your love whilst explaining your need for friendship, companionship etc. Point out that this does not detract from your relationship with them, which is always special and that will never change. The bedroom scene and your ex-wife’s reaction to that will have also brought home the realization that mummy and daddy will not be getting back together. Children invariably live in hope of this. They may like Penny, but the hope will still be there. They will need time to adjust. Don’t take their withdrawal personally. Accept that this will be the status quo for a while. At a good guess there is also a lot of divided loyalty being experienced by them. They could be very confused as to whom they feel they should be supporting. If it is so, her behavior and need to blame and project her hurt as an attack on you through the children is misguided, destructive and misplaced. The health of your relationship with them, for them, is more important than her need to vent her pain in that manner. Unfortunately though, kids are often in the firing line and both parents’ inappropriate behaviors can cause them a lot of emotional trauma. Do not return the attack through your children ever. Do not criticize her to them. Simply explain the facts as they are without blame i.e. each of you love the children and they do not have to choose between you, they can love you both as they always have. Whether your relationship with your ex-wife is good, bad or indifferent it is between the both of you and is not for them to sort out or take sides over. Also that your ex-wife is entitled as you are to have a new relationship and that you also want her to be happy as you do yourself. Stress that you understand that it is very hard for them to accept that you are no longer a family and will not be able to be that again. Explain to them that you understand and accept that they can feel sad and disappointed about the situation and that this is ok. Keep reaffirming your love, show your care, and accept where they are at, without judgment of either yourself or them. Continue to be patient and it will change. Robin.

Supporting Our Emergency Volunteers
Everton News
As the Shadow Minister for Fire and Emergency Services, I was proud to announce a policy to provide more funding for our hard-working emergency services volunteers across Queensland. Emergency Service organisations rely significantly on community support and the spirit of generosity to provide the services and reliable equipment that are essential to keep Queenslanders safe, which is why we think more can be done to provide a helping hand. If elected at the next state election, The LNP will establish a $10 million Emergency Volunteer Fund providing grants to organisations including State Emergency Service, Rural Fire Service, Surf Life Saving & St John Ambulance, who provide essential services to Queenslanders. Thank you to the dedicated and committed volunteers of these community services groups.

The ‘Hills District’ component of my electorate will now be expanded. Please don‘t hesitate to contact me through my office if I can assist you with any issues.

For Ferny Grove Celebrating 200 Days of my Campaign!
This month will see the 200th day of my campaign to win back the Ferny Grove Electorate at the upcoming State Election. I’ve been meeting and listening to a wide range of people and groups in our community almost every day. The overwhelming message is that people want to see change. They want to be offered solutions and they want to see progress in an electorate they feel is being left behind others. Infrastructure in our electorate is in desperate need of progress, and so over the past month I have been introducing the LNP Leader Mr Tim Nicholls MP and Deputy Leader Mrs Deb Frecklington MP to a number of critical issues. These are infrastructure projects I will make my priority if elected as the Member for Ferny Grove. One of these is Samford Road. I have written about this issue before; Samford Rd is the main road shared by the entire electorate. There are numerous points of congestion which must be addressed. The current Member appears to have dumped this issue in the “Too Hard” basket, but this is not acceptable. There are many challenges we face as an electorate and just because something is difficult, it doesn’t mean we don’t fight for it or look for other solutions. More cars have come to our roads, but sadly traffic improvement has not. I have received hundreds of messages and suggestions, all of which I have taken into consideration. I look forward to sharing my plan for Samford Rd very soon. We have so many great schools in our electorate, and we have visited almost all. However, some of these are under strain. Despite being fully aware of future development projects for almost three years, the current local Member has achieved nothing for schools which
Tid Bits JULY 2017
need vital infrastructure improvements to cater for growing enrolments. Some schools are still dealing with totally impractical infrastructure delivered by the current member when he was Patron Senator for the Building the Education Revolution Program under the former Federal Labor Government. More people have come to our electorate, but sadly school improvements have not. It is time schools in the Ferny Grove Electorate were taken care of too and I look forward to announcing my plan for better schools shortly. My predecessor and former Member for Ferny Grove, Mr Dale Shuttleworth was a hard-working and effective advocate for the Ferny Grove electorate. I am honoured to have received his endorsement, and I hope to continue where he left off and Get Ferny Grove Moving again!

The Ferny Report Mark Furner M.P.
State Member for Ferny Grove
Ferny Grove Budget 2017-18 Highlights
I am really pleased to announce that the Palaszczuk Government’s 2017-18 Budget will deliver significant results for residents in the Ferny Grove Electorate. The most exciting is the $1.2 million that has been allocated to commence construction of the Ferny Grove Station Precinct Transit Oriented Development (TOD). This is a project that I have worked long and hard to deliver for the community. Residents have consistently told me they want more commuter car parking at Ferny Grove station, over and above the current 900 spots. I’ve heard those concerns, and the Palaszczuk Government has delivered an increase of almost 30%, with 253 additional dedicated commuter parking spaces. The $1.2 million in the Budget is the first instalment of a $9M transformation of the Ferny Grove Station. The project will create jobs in the construction phase, as well as ongoing retail positions. The Ferny Grove Line will see trains on average every six minutes during peak periods, coupled with the Palaszczuk Government’s commitment to fully fund and build the $5.41 billion Cross River Rail project. The Palaszczuk Government is investing in infrastructure and support for growing schools in our region, including $500,000 in 2017-18 as part of an overall $6.1 million investment into building extra classrooms at Mitchelton Special School. $400,000 will be delivered to Ferny Grove State High School to refurbish Block D Manual Arts and prep students
Mark at the site of the Ferny Grove Station Precinct Transit Oriented Development in Queensland State Schools will now be supported by a fulltime teacher aide in every class. We’re providing eligible pensioners with cost-of-living relief in the form of $300 per year to help pay power bills, and $120 per year to reduce water rates from Queensland Urban Utilities and Unitywater. A further $7.55 million has been allocated for disability, community and youth programs in the Ferny Grove electorate. The Government is tackling homelessness and the housing crisis through a $4.7 million investment in Ferny Grove in 2017-18 to complete 20 new public housing units, and an extension of the $20,000 First Home Owners’ Grant. Six innovative companies will benefit from grant funding totalling $330,000 in 2017-18 ($1.1 million over 2 years) to go towards the development of pioneering initiatives. This is in addition to incentives of $20,000 for local employers to hire young jobseekers, and $15,000 towards the employment of long-term job-seekers. This is a Budget that provides significant local infrastructure, cost-of-living relief, housing options for those in our community who need it most, and assistance for young families to own a home of their own. I’m proud to be part of the Government which has delivered it.

Arana Netball News
With the end of Downey Park fixtures fast approaching, half of Arana Netball’s competitive teams look poised to progress to the finals. Arana 1, Open Div.2, have maintained fourth position on the points ladder for most of the season, and at this rate will compete in the first week of play-offs, in the elimination semi-final on 29th July. Arana 3, Open Div.7, have also maintained a high standard through the season, and being in third place in a 6 team competition should play in the preliminary finals on 5th August. Both Arana Intermediate teams, Arana 4 and Arana 5, have done well throughout the season, remaining in the top half of their points tables, and both are set to progress to the semifinals. In the younger teams, Arana 7, 13 Years Div. 4, have finished the season more strongly than they started, and again should easily progress to the semi-finals. Very best of luck to all teams competing in finals. With the early finish to the Downey Park Netball season this year, (Grand Finals scheduled for 12th August,) teams not playing in finals will finish on 22nd July, with 6-teams competitions playing fixtures until 29th July. To round off the season, Arana Netball Club presentations are scheduled for Saturday 9th September. This will be further celebration of Arana Netball’s 40 year anniversary, with details yet to be finalised. The Gala Dinner staged in June as a 40 year celebration proved to be an enjoyable night for those attending. Arana Netball’s A.G.M. is on 21st August, and with several Committee not continuing in current roles. Anyone interested in being part of the future of the Club should make enquiries to arananetballclub@gmail.com or the President on 0432 216 407. Club meetings are held throughout the year on the third Monday on the month, the next meeting being on 17th July. Meetings are held in the Arana Sports meeting room at the Hills District Community Hall and commence at 7.30pm. Meetings are open for all interested to attend.
