Arana Hills Library Reopens: Refreshed and Revitalised

Our beloved local library, the Arana Hills Library, has written a new page in its history having reopened its doors on the 23rd May after undergoing major renovations.

This community institution has been missed immensely by locals since its closure in early March for refurbishments. However, a new chapter now lies ahead for the library, after receiving a much-needed face lift. The renovations included a new roof, customer service area, outdoor patio, and a fresh lick of paint. The library is now truly revitalised and locals will be amazed by the engaging and contemporary space that has been created, inspired by the Hills District itself. Much to the delight of the younger generation, the new renovations include a children’s space called ‘Curlew Corner’. This nook includes several Hills-inspired features for children to explore and an imaginative space for families to enjoy together. Other interactive elements that will keep little brains engaged include a Lego wall and a tree-inspired interactive feature wall promoting language and literacy. The Library is now the perfect place to study and read, with quieter zones and booths to cacoon in. These clever zones are complete with power to connect and recharge your devices along with free Wi-Fi throughout. Other highlights of the refurbishments include new feature picture windows, which allow readers to take in the expansive parkland views whilst relaxing in comfortable reading nooks. The Arana Hills Library has reopened with a Library Express service, in line with current Covid-19 restrictions. At the time of going to press, only 10 customers are allowed into the library at a time and are able to spend up to 15 minutes browsing for books or 30 minutes using the public computers. Restrictions maybe eased going forward. For more information, please contact the Library on 3351 3401.

Knitting for Those in Need The Mildred Bliss Grovely Trefoil Guild has been busy over the past year, generously knitting up a storm in order to create goods for people in need.

Each April, the guild holds a craft meeting in which members bring items they have lovingly created through the year. These items are then given to wherever the need seems greatest. Last year (and this year) the guild have donated their creations to the ‘To The Streets’, a campaign which is run by the Arana Hills Church of Christ. Eight members and an extra friend made 20 crocheted or knitted rugs, four scarves, seven beanies, six children’s jumpers and two helmets, four pairs of TV slippers and two baby shawls. All the items were dropped off at a member’s garage on Wednesday the 13th of May, ready for distribution in time for the cold weather’s arrival. The team members at the charity drop-off point expressed their delight with all the beautiful things which will give warmth and love to the lucky recipients. The guild also produced 15 premmie baby caps and bootie sets that were donated to the Mater Hospital for new born premmie babies to have to take home. The Trefoil Guild is the ‘senior branch’ in the Girl Guide movement. Many have been members of Girl Guides since childhood and often are still active leaders. They support Guiding and Scouting in financial ways as well as through practical efforts . This can be seen at Jamborees and state and local camps and events where they help to run activities or hospitality stations. The guild also helps to raise funds for various charities that come to their notice with Trefoil Guild state-wide doing a ‘Good Turn’ for a charity nominated at their conference every second year. The current recipient of their ‘Good Turn’ is the CWA Public Rural Crisis Fund. Anyone interested in joining the Trefoil Guild can contact Anne Maloney, the Secretary, on 0415 334 517.

Spirit-Lifting Lunch for our Elderly!

Residents at Bellevue Care Centre enjoyed a terrific lunch whilst in isolation

There wasn’t a dry eye in the house at Bellevue Care Centre on the 29th April, when a delightful lunch was delivered thanks to the generosity of Red Rooster Arana Hills.

Both residents and staff at the centre were treated to a smorgasbord of roast chicken, chips and vegetables thanks to our local Red Rooster franchise. ‘Prior to photos, some of the ladies had their hair done and lipstick applied! When the chairs went out, others could see the ladies outside and they also wanted to join in, we had to set up more and more seats. The residents painted ‘thank you’ signs after breakfast, ready for the arrival of their lunch,’ said Kathy Cook, Centre Director at Bellevue Care Centre. Instead of saying ‘cheers’ for the photos, it was ‘RED ROOSTER!’ With loud applause after. Resident Adele Gallagher also thanked Red Rooster on behalf of the facility. The residents loved the lunch today, with Des stating, ‘I want a piece of chicken

www.hillsecho.com

www.facebook.com/thehillsecho

with a bone in it. That’s what I remember about Red Rooster!’ Thank you signs were created by the residents to thank Red Rooster. Bellevue would like to extend a truly heartfelt thanks to Owen, Chris, Jenny and their team for bringing much needed joy to their frontline staff, who provide love, excellence in care, and support to their dear residents. Like the team at Red Rooster Arana Hills, who are family owned & operated, Bellevue is also a family operated facility that was established back in 1960. The centre endeavours to support our local business, including Red Rooster Arana Hills. ‘COVID 19 has been a challenge for all residential aged care settings, so I must say our team here at Bellevue from our Registered Nurses, Assistant Nurses, Hotel Service staff, management and owners were thrilled at the amazing generosity shown from the team at the Arana Hills store,’ gushed Kathy Cook. ‘We are passionate about the industry, the care that is provided to our dear residents, and towards maintaining a family atmosphere.’

Day Trips Past and Present News and stories from the Samford Museum

On the May Day holiday in 1947, the staff of the Customs Department eagerly awaited their picnic at Closeburn.

Tragically, it turned to disaster before the train reached its destination. This accident is remembered as the ‘Camp Mountain Rail Crash’. Commemorations were organised on the 50th and 70th anniversaries by Samford organisations. Samford Museum holds information about the crash and the locals who responded to the emergency. This is available for researching when the museum reopens, hopefully in the not too distant future. Other popular day trips were organised by RACQ for the motor enthusiasts. In June, 1930, a club basket picnic was

Page 6 - June 2020, The Hills Echo

held to Cedar Creek and Bunya. About 15 cars made the trip, and participants enjoyed tennis and other sports at the destination. Today, there is so much variety on offer for local residents in terms of day trips. One example is the popular Ferny Grove/ Samford Rail Trail that follows the former train line. Eatons Crossing picnic area is another popular sport, also known as Edward Allison Park. Other easy car trips away are Sandgate, Suttons Beach and Bribie Island. Samford Village itself is a day trip destination growing in popularity, with plenty of coffee and craft shops, as well as the walking path, Laurie Balfour Way, and through the Avenue of Honour. Here, take time to read the plaques set into the path as well as the memorials to fallen soldiers and the stunning views. Keep an eye on the Samford M u s e u m s w e b s i t e w w w. samfordmuseum.com.au, Facebook Page www.facebook. com/samfordmuseum and the local papers for updates regarding reopening and further news.

Local History - Information gathered in these articles are sourced from ‘A list of place names’ by Melva A. Welch

The family behind Patricks Road

Frederick Patrick (16yrs) arrived from London via the Golden City ship on the 5th February, 1866. He worked as a Blacksmith in Roma Street, Brisbane before traveling to Western Queensland to do some shepherding for a few years. He then returned to Brisbane and his first land purchase of 185 acres were portions 52 and 61 in the Parish of Bunya on 29th May, 1878. He had been married for almost five years to Elizabeth and the land purchase occurred just four months before their fourth and fifth children, twins Sarah and Sophy, were born. In 1883, Fred also purchased 195 acres of portion 71 in Parish of Bunya from John Carter. The family continued to grow. Unfortunately Elizabeth died during child birth of her 14th child, Pearly Elizabeth. The other surviving family members were Robert, Crosby, Charles, Sarah, Herbert, Edward, Lucy, Ann, Violet, Francis, Albert Edward and a second set of twins, Percy and Leslie, who were only four when their mother died. The eldest daughter, Sarah (20yrs), then took care of the family. The Patrick family home was named Mt Pleasant Homestead and was situated on the rise of what is now Yanderra Avenue, Arana Hills. Cattle grazed all over the land to the Park Road property boundary. Unfortunately, Fred Patrick died in February 1927. Sarah Patrick later wed Frank Barber. When Frank died in 1944, Sarah moved to Gympie leaving the Patrick family home where she had resided for 66 years.

‘Nulty Way’ - How it got it’s name

At the request of the local progress association in August 1985, a pathway was constructed between Cobbity Crescent and Plucks Road - it was named ‘Nulty Way’. The Progress Association also donated the funds to have the stencilled wooden name posts placed at the entrances. The pathway was named after Tom Nulty, a well known president of the association who had served at the The Nulty Way stairs association from 1971 for 5 1/2 years with an additional 6 1/2 years as a voluntary editor of the local newspaper. He built his home adjacent to the pathway location, and his family of four daughters became just as involved with their community as their father. Tom was vocal and active in seeing that the Arana Hills Library fitted into the area aesthetically. He was also involved in the council-assisted organising and planting of hundreds of trees around Narellan Street, Cobbity Crescent and nearby streets of Arana Hills. In February 1982, the family moved to Fig Tree Pocket.

when the sun strikes it the plants get burnt, especially new growth. To prevent this give a quick spray with the hose and the frost will melt before the sun causes any damage. A clear plastic 2 litre soft drink bottle cut off where the top starts to taper makes a good miniature hot house. Fill a pot with an opening about the same size as the bottle, with moist striking mix. Dip the slip in a hormone cutting power or honey. We are in the month of June; the first month of winter. A weather forecaster said, ‘We are in for a wet winter’. Day temperatures have been pleasant, but when the winter chill sets in you’ll need to consider how to lessen the effects of this in your garden. Here are a few valuable tips. Never water your garden before 9am or 4pm. The early morning watering keeps the plants chilled for longer than necessary and the evening watering can cause fungi and disease to attack the plants. After 4pm there is no warmth to dry up the moisture which clings to everything until the sunshine comes the next day. Should you live in an area that is subject to frost first thing each morning, check frost isn’t on your plants. It looks like crushed ice blanketing everything. Actually, it is frozen dew, and Frost coating a plant

Moving Grantham A Samford Mans Memoir

When severe flooding hit the Lockyer Valley on 10 January 2011, Jamie Simmonds watched the devastation unfold on his television at his Samford home. The epicentre of the disaster was the small town of Grantham, where 12 people lost their lives after a powerful wall of water swept through, obliterating all in its path.

At that point, Jamie didn’t know how instrumental he would become in helping the town recover. In the days following the flood, former Lockyer Valley mayor Steve Jones, requested Jamie’s assistance and appointed him director of the Strengthening Grantham Project. Together they took on the ambitious task of moving residents away from the floodplain and up onto a hill. ‘Steve’s idea to move the town came about the morning after the flood,’ Jamie recalls. ‘The idea was that we couldn’t build back where all this devastation occurred. How can someone put their child to bed at night in the same place where someone lost their life?’ The first house was ready just 11 months after the flood event, and Jamie Simmonds, Author the project proved to be a huge success. An Australian first land of Rising from the flood: swap initiative was implemented Moving the Town of where residents’ land on the Grantham floodplain was traded for a similar sized lot up on the hill, utilising a ballot system without the need to exchange funds. Jamie continued to work alongside Steve Jones up until the former mayor’s death in 2016. He wouldn’t return to the town for three years until an American professor requested someone show him the relocation. It was this professor who would convince Jamie to write down his experience and share his successes with other communities. ‘He said I needed to write a research paper about Grantham because there’s no manual for relocating towns. Relocations are becoming a bigger thing now with more natural disasters occurring,’ Jamie explains. That research paper quickly turned into a memoir, ‘Rising from the flood: Moving the Town of Grantham’, and the story of Grantham is now being shared globally. UNUSUAL HOBBIES ‘More about MATCHWORK’ by Donald Willsher

Following the introduction last month, I thought it may be of interest if I talk about some techniques I have developed over the years. If there were any books on this subject, I never found them!

Firstly, I’ll mention the use of the burnt heads to create effect. I do not light each match individually!! I strike one match and while holding the tray of the matchbox open, I simply place the flaring match into the box and ignite the other matches. Make sure you keep the box at arm’s length!! This results in a fairly even burn. The matches are used to good effect on geometric designs and on pictures, such as the map of Australia, where the heads form the coastline and provide a pattern on the border. Secondly, when filling in backgrounds, I draw accurate straight lines across the work at 25mm intervals. I start with two rows of matches at the end of the work and wait until these are set hard. They provide a surface against which the following rows can be pressed to remove as many gaps between rows as possible and to help keep rows straight. As I approach each line, if the rows have gone away from dead straight, I can fill them in with slivers of matches to correct the lines before proceeding further - as seen in the attached photo. I find it best to lay about Cramping the rows of matches five rows and then cramp them into the previous rows using the blades as shown. Thirdly, when making clock faces, I draw lines for each minute right out to the edge of the board. Next, I place the hour matches and the numerals (XX and so on), all of which have to be stained. Next I place the minute matches (with the burnt heads). Then I place the matches at the tail of the minute matches towards the centre of the clock. After that, it is a matter of filling in between those matches. Because each segment is an angle, I fill in from the outside inwards and finish each segment with shaped slivers of match to completely fill that segment. Then, I proceed to the next outer segment, placing guide matches along the drawn lines as I go. To finish off each work, I have found that a certain large hardware chain sells a moulding called ‘Shelf Edge’. This covers the ends of the matches and provides a nice finish. I hope these ideas are of some help to any readers who want to try this craft. More next month.

Back to the beginning we go

News from The Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club

The Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club Inc was started by John Nedwich in October, 1977.

John’s interest in Lapidary (the study, collection and working of precious and semi precious stones), began as a young boy growing up in Gympie. He was a member of the Gympie Gem Club for many years, so when he moved to Brisbane in 1969, he became a member of the Camp Hill Lapidary Club. John moved to the Keperra district in 1972 and found there were no Lapidary clubs in the immediate and surrounding areas. He set up a stall at one of the Community Carnivals held in Willmore Park, Ferny Hills in 1977 with a view to seeking out people who may be interested in the hobby of Lapidary. As a result, about half a dozen keen and enthusiastic ‘rockhounds’ responded to John’s call and after many meetings and discussions, The Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club Inc was established in October 1977. Their first place of residence was in an old disused pie shop in Blaker Road at Oxford Park. With one of the new recruits interested in engineering, they were able to make some of their

Founder of the Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club, John Nedwich digging for petrified wood at Chinchilla

own lapidary machinery. At the moment, as with a lot of other organisations, the Arana Hills Senior Citizens club has ceased meeting since the onset of the Coronavirus as our members are in the age group susceptible to catching the virus. Our committee will be meeting on the 18th of June when they will asses the situation of reopening the club. One of the difficulties we will face will be the social distancing which, I feel, will be with us for a while. In the mean time, be careful and stay healthy. We wish a speedy recovery to all of our sick members. Please give us a call if you need any further information. Till next time, Mike 0406 601 589

Although The Hills Players can’t report on current events due to the Corona restrictions, their archivist, Ann Johnston, has shared this wonderful submission. After a successful first production at the Bargo Street Community Hall in 1981, The Hills Players were keen to carry on: Fortunately, Father Daley at St Williams Catholic Church was sympathetic to our plight and offered St Williams at a very nominal rental. The old church was to be our home, with a stage being built by parishioners and husbands of theatre group members. Father Daley even brought in some old theatre seats he'd acquired from one of the theatres in town which was being renovated and the Players thought they were just 'it'. The Hills Players celebrated their 20th year at St Williams Community Hall and were very grateful for this "home" even though they sometimes wished for their own place, somewhere with raked seating, more storage area and better stage facilities. But all these things were very costly and the Players had always tried to keep their prices within the budget of families and pensioners and they didn’t have the financial backing to have their own theatre. To celebrate their 20th year, The Hills Players decided to present some of the best of the productions they had done in the past. The first show for the year was ‘There Goes The Bride’ by Ray Cooney and John Chapman in April. They first staged this play in 1984 when it was very popular. It is a very funny play with lots of action and some wonderful characters. Mid year they presented their usual three one act plays which included ‘Green Grow the Cabbages’, ‘It's a Crust’, and ‘Richard the Third's Revenge’ which were all popular when performed before. At the end of this year, they decided to do ‘the best of our revues’ with songs and acts from each of the 4 revues they had previously presented. The original aim for The Hills Players was to perform affordable live theatre to their district. This is still the case and they will be back treading the boards once the world is well again.

Glory Days of the BRL

From the Enoggera and Districts Historical Society

With the NRL rugby league season now underway, who else out there remembers the glory days of the Brisbane Rugby League (BRL) competition prior to the Brisbane Broncos starting in 1988?

Brothers after winning the 1987 BRL grand final against Redcliffe.

Who used to enjoy watching their favourite team at one of the home grounds used for the competition? Such as Wests Panthers at Purtell Park, Bardon; Brothers at Corbett Park, Grange; or Valleys at Neumann Oval, Albion? Who else remembers the Sunday match of the day at Lang Park? And how it was replayed later on TV with commentary by people such as Billy J. Smith, Mick Veivers and George Doniger? The ‘70s and ‘80s were great times for the BRL, where many future super stars emerged – such as Wally Lewis and Mal Meninga. But even before this, there were other special events and memories. The last BRL grand final – pre Broncos – was in September 1987. Brothers defeated Redcliffe 26-8. And the last time Queensland defeated NSW in an interstate match – before Origin commenced in 1980 – was in 1975 at Lang Park. Queensland was captained by the legendary Ian ‘Bunny’ Pearce and coached by Barry Muir – who first coined the term ‘cockroaches’ to describe the NSW side. The Enoggera and Districts Historical Society would l o v e t o h e a r p e o p l e ’s memories of the BRL from years gone by. Visit our Facebook page at www. facebook.com/EnoggeraDistricts-Historical-SocietyInc-144531702308269/ and post a photo of a game or player – and write a comment about the time and place. Embracing Technology during the Tough Times

Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, The Mitchelton Older Women’s Network Qld have been unable to meet for their regular coffee mornings, a Saturday lunch and monthly meetings.

However, this group of women don’t just stand by idly waiting for things to change. The ladies in this organisation have embraced technology and, in spite of the health crisis, they are still a very active group. They now hold regular Zoom meetings that have become the new norm, with gatherings of up to 10 members joining in the shared conversations. Other members are contacting each other by other forms of video links and even using the phone. Members have said that meeting up on Zoom and other links is helping them get past the vacuum that the restrictions have caused. It‘s also helping them to maintain a healthy physical and mental attitude. The Older Women’s Network Qld is an organisation for women from 60 upwards who pride themselves on being active in their community, maintaining independence and enjoying mixing with other like-minded women. The aim of the organisation is to share information that is relevant and necessary in order to continue a healthy and positive approach to growing older. The activities of the Mitchelton branch are geared to this philosophy. If you want to know more about Mitchelton OWNQ, contact Judith on 0431 159 921. When meetings recommence, they will be held at the Moonah Park Retirement Village Community Centre, 6 Blaker Road, Mitchelton on the 4th Wednesday of the month from 10am to 12pm. Cost is $5.

A Museum within a Museum

Monthly news from the Brisbane Tramway Museum and the Ferny Grove Men’s Shed Quite often, museums and archives are separate entities. Museums may of course have their own archives, but few would be the repositories of other party’s archives.

However, in the case of the Brisbane Tramway Museum, our archives are more like a museum within a museum. Only a small percentage relate directly to the museum’s own history. Most items were inherited from the Brisbane City Council when tramway operations ceased in 1969. Normally, when we think of archives, we think of box after box of dusty files sitting on shelves, seldom seeing the light of day, simply filed for the sake of filing them. Some of our archives are no different! Nonetheless, a Citizenship Certificate great part of our collection consists of technical drawings, blueprints and data relating to all the different trams and trolley buses in our fleet. We also have a great range of information on old tram routes, often sought out by the council wanting to find out where old tram tracks are still buried beneath the bitumen. For the benefit of younger readers, blueprints were the forerunners of photocopies! Some of the rarer items are the glass slide photographs of Brisbane’s early trams. If only we had a projector to show them! Other rarities are minute books dating back to when the Brisbane City Council took over the tram service in the 1920’s and annual reports from tram operations covering all Australian states. Our oldest records are rural catalogues dated 1903 and 1908. We have certificates which were awarded to citizens who helped the government during the major strike of 1912. In all, we estimate that there are some 3000 plans and over 1000 books in our archives, not to mention Bushell's tea advertisement on the back of an such items as vintage uniforms, tickets and other memorabilia, such as old tram ticket copies of advertisements which were printed on the backs of the tickets. The archives are the province of Glen Dyer, some time assisted by one or two other members. He is currently organising the digitisation of the collection. The Brisbane City Council, recognising the importance of these archives, is upgrading our archive room to better preserve these treasures. The Brisbane Tramway Museum is proudly supported by The Brisbane City Council. Staff: Dr Helen Byrnes Dr Michelle Barton Dr Anita Berger Dr Lauren McConnell Dr Katrina Price

The Priority Report Brisbane Property Market Update

2020 has definitely been a roller-coaster ride for us all. We’ve seen many changes over the last couple of months in the way we do business. According to SQM Research, listing volumes are 10.1% lower in Brisbane than they were 12 months ago, it is expected that transaction volumes will remain low for some time yet, due to limited supply. With the restrictions on open homes there has also been fewer sales across the city throughout April. While there was a distinct shutdown in the earlier part of April, in recent weeks we have definitely seen the optimism return. Buyer search activity on realestate.com. au has increased by 41% after a sharp decline at the end of March, so people are starting to at least “think” about real estate after going into hibernation for a few weeks. In our local area we are seeing a huge demand, especially at the lower end of the market ($450,000 to $650,000).There is a massive shortage of homes for sale in this price bracket. So, if your property is likely to be attractive to this entry level market and want to make the most of this imbalance then please contact Professionals to discuss as we have buyers waiting to purchase NOW! smartpropertyinvestment.com.au

Ferny Grove TOD

Underground and multi deck commuter carparks, kiss ‘n’ ride, pedestrian links and bicycle store are among the first to be delivered as part of approval. Joint State and Federal Government funding will deliver 500 extra commuter carparks and hundreds of local jobs. Now that plans are in place, the next step is waiting for the response from the Brisbane City Council’s request for further information.

~Vale~ Wendy Robson

From Paul Ryan for the Golden Valley Keperra Lions Club

In normal times I would not use this column to advise our readers of the passing of one of our members. However I am compelled to as Wendy was one of our gentle souls with a heart full of what Lions Members are all about. Last week, our Golden Valley Wendy Robson Keperra Lions Club lost a young 70-year-old member to cancer after a short illness. Wendy was a Lion for some 32 years and will be greatly missed. Living in the Hills community with husband Darryl Robson, also a Lion, Wendy was a tireless worker and champion of the Lions’ global causes, which included; Diabetes, Hunger, Childhood Cancer, Vision and the Environment. Everyone who met Wendy would easily like her. She was mildly mannered, with a caring smile, calm demeanor and excellent sense of humour. However, she was a leader in the Lions, had a determination and relentlessness to ensure the projects and causes that Lions supports were held in the front of members minds. One of Wendy’s annual projects that she organised locally was the selling of daffodils in our local shopping centres - ‘Daffodil Day’ supporting the Cancer Council. This year Daffodil Day is Friday 28th August. Our club will ensure Wendy’s work here continues. Lions supports many local community service needs but also raises funds to support medical research. Our foundation ‘Lions Medical Research Foundation’ supports new researchers for three years, allowing them to get their research projects up and running. The next breakthrough may just be around the corner with researchers at UQ working on a Covid-19 vaccine. Wendy’s caring heart, desire to help those in need, and willingness to volunteer her time to others is testament to her great legacy. We need more Wendy’s in our life, our world and our community. She will be sadly missed by Darryl, her family, her friends and her Lions family. Wendy made a difference in our world, - quietly and confidentlywithout seeking recognition or reward. She was a great Lion. For more information regarding the GVK Lions contact, Paul Ryan at gvk@ lionsq3.org.au or call 0409 688 675.

Hayley Crisafio Owners Blackwood Café & Espresso Bar, Mitchelton & FERNY‘s Café & Espresso Bar, Ferny Grove

Jaimi Wilson In 2015, after visiting the Gold Coast and falling in love with their dream of owning a café on the strip, Hayley (30years) and Jaimi (32 years) made the impulse decision to move over to Brisbane from Perth. 4 years later, the girls now have 2 booming, suburban, high-volume cafes nestled amongst the tree-lined streets of Brisbane’s North West suburbs – Mitchelton & Ferny Grove. When the opportunity of purchasing the old Geronimo Jerky site in Mitchelton arose, it was a no-brainer! With fresh eyes and a determined attitude, they took over the café side of the business. Despite having an extremely low budget, they managed to pull off their first ever café renovation over the Christmas period of 2016. Imagine Channel 9s The Block, but with little to no money, no prizes, and no fame! Fast forward 3 years, a lot of 7-day work weeks, 3am alarms and some tough lessons learnt along the way, they managed to build Blackwood Café & Espresso Bar (Blackwood Café) up from the ground and into one of the most popular cafés on Blackwood Street. Originally seating around 50 people at capacity, it now seats 138 people and will regularly fill to capacity for hours on end during breakfast & lunch services! As Blackwood Café & Espresso Bar settled into its important role in the community as the local go-to coffee shop, the processes and team settled in, too. With a glimpse of spare time on the horizon, the girls decided it was time to kickstart a second venture. Having driven past the old Poshamocha site in Ferny Grove countless times, they were certain that it would make the perfect spot to establish their brand! Word travels fast in the ‘hospo’ world, so when Poshamocha went up for sale in November 2019, the pair acted fast! 6 short weeks later (plus yet another Christmas renovation), the newly opened FERNY’S Café & Espresso Bar was opened! With the locals, FERNY’S was a HIT! The Social Media hype alone leading up to launch date was bigger than that of Blackwood Café’s—even after 3 years of strong and successful trade. Hayley and Jaimi knew this cafe was destined to be a winner before it opened its doors;

Ferny Grove Shopping Village, 51 McGinn Road, Ferny Grove

FERNYSCAFE www.fernyscafe.com www.hillsecho.com

both of their cafes shared the same model with similar menu offerings and delicious & locally branded coffee (Thank you Elixir Coffee in Stafford). However, for this very reason, it was important that FERNY’S developed its own personality. With the newly renovated space fostering a white-panelled, country-modern ambiance, warm teak wood features, plenty of greenery and the beautiful outdoor decking space, it was now set to launch. And boy oh boy did it take off! The locals of Ferny Grove & Upper Kedron became regulars in no time – it was as if the café had always been there. Hayley and Jaimi believe that building a strong, sizeable team is the key ingredient in their recipe for success. With 50+ local employees working in the stores combined, their team has helped to grow and create little hubs in the community. Around 50% of their team are enthusiastic, career-minded hospitality workers who are cherished for their exceptional skills as baristas and/or chefs, whilst the other 50% are juniors and trainees who are hired through annual employment drives at the local high schools. These 2 cafes have been the home of dozens of teenagers “first jobs” and “first paid shifts”; the girls couldn’t be prouder! Regularly, patrons will comment on how many staff will be working at any one time. Hayley and Jaimi have always been passionate about great service. Hospitality is a competitive market, and one of their biggest goals in making a name in the industry was to ALWAYS have fast, efficient service! It’s not a surprise to see up to 16 busy bees working at once during weekends, zipping around the cafés to ensure their customers recieve the best service possible. Hayley and Jaimi don’t often get the luxury of having free time on their hands, but when they do, they love spending time with their 2 dogs, Houdini & Optimus, either heading down to local dog parks or the Bunya watering hole. If they are ever rewarded with a few consecutive days off, you’ll find them down at the Goldie by the ocean – the place that inspired their business dreams to begin with.

Karen Marlow Real Estate Specialist Professionals Priority Ferny Hills

We all know how much real estate agents like to talk about themselves! When I sat down to write this article, I thought how unfair it would be to subject you to an entire page doing just that. So instead I decided to ask people what they want to know about me. Grab a cuppa and enjoy the read, and if there’s anything else you want to know, give me a call… How long have you been in real estate? I started selling off-the-plan developments in 2010. It was pretty boring sitting in a sales office all day and I wasn’t satisfied with the work. From there, I moved into residential sales in the Burpengary/Morayfield area (we had moved to be closer to my partner’s work) and I instantly felt I was doing exactly what I was meant to do. When we moved back to our Ferny Hills home, I joined the team at Professionals Priority and have been loving it even since. What do you like most about your work? That’s a tough question to answer. I love getting out and meeting people, learning about their plans and seeing if I can help. Setting up and managing campaigns is a lot of fun because each listing and client is different. It takes a tailored approach to get the desired result and keep things as easy as possible for my clients. Negotiating on behalf of my clients is great because it causes me to ask a lot of questions to better understand the dynamics. Selling and buying property can be stressful; I aim to make it as easy as possible for everyone. I guess the thing I get a real kick out of though, is the delight that people show on settlement day. That’s why I do what I do. What’s the worst part of your job? Real estate is an industry full of rejection. It consumes a lot of energy, physical and emotional. There are endless phone calls, meetings, emails and messages at all hours. Realistically, those things aren’t difficult for me because most people are genuinely nice. What really gets to me is when I come across rude people. It doesn’t happen often, and I’ve learned to walk away – decline the business and move on. I give people the benefit of the doubt and hope they are just having a bad day.

How many sales do you do? The number of sales each year varies for reasons within and outside of my control. The flexibility that real estate offers means I can choose how many listings I accept. On the other hand, the market can be unpredictable influencing sales volume. Over the past 5 years I’ve averaged 20 sales per year. What did you do before? I was a project manager/management consultant, helping organisations improve their processes and systems. That involved setting up and managing projects and project teams and analysing business processes. I often led negotiations for multi-million dollar contracts. Does your prior job help you in real estate? Yes. Every listing is like a project; we need a clear objective - an understanding of my clients’ current situation and a plan to get them to where they want/ need to be. A key part of negotiation is understanding each party. That takes a lot of information gathering, and respectful, honest conversations. It’s common for buyers and sellers to think of negotiation in the same way you’d haggle over the price of a knock-off watch or handbag in a Bali market. We’re talking about people’s livelihoods – enabling them to move on to wherever they need to go. That’s not to be taken lightly. Thanks for taking the time to learn more about me. If you’re wondering what my recent clients have to say, here’s a few words from them… “Karen made me feel at ease and confident” Judith “Working with our family and getting results” Kevin and Corinne “She brought such a sense of calmness to selling our house” Robyn and Shane “I am pleased I made the right choice in appointing her” Saras “We knew she was good but she proved she was better” Peter and Karen “An excellent and supportive experience” Stephen and Jane

COUNSELLOR’S COLUMN with Robin Botic

Dear Robin

I would like some direction on this. My wife gets right up me when I watch adult porn films and such on my computer. She goes on and on about there has to be something wrong in my head to do it. She does not like me “ogling” other women like this. The biggest battles we have around this are over our son and daughter. Vickie says I am setting a lousy example to both of them if they ever see what I am so engrossed in and that my time would be better spent in more family time with them. In my defence, I am very careful about when I watch this stuff. Our kids are only young and I make sure that they are not around to see it. I am not doing anything wrong. It is legal and I enjoy it. So, what’s the harm? I just think Vickie is jealous, and for me that is her issue not mine. I love her, find her very attractive and have never cheated on her. Therefore, I don’t see that I should stop doing something I enjoy just because she does not like it. Am I wrong to want to do this?

Nathan

Dear Nathan, My, you have opened up a Pandora’ s box with this one. Anything to do with our sexuality, its expression and how we model behaviour in this regard is potentially inflammatory. This is not about who is right and who is wrong. Ideas about what is appropriate sexually changes from culture to culture and also over time. This has been very evident in our culture in our life time. The difficulty that you and Vickie are faced with is that your views are very different on the place and use of porn. Those views arise out of your different familial and societial conditioning. What you have to understand and deal with between you is what assumptions, beliefs, fears etc. your current views are based on. How relevant or reactionary are they? There would be no problem if there was no difference in your views. Living with difference is about finding a workable compromise through mutual understanding and respect. Fantasizing is a very important expression. It is human and the use of porn can be a part of that for many people. This has been so over the centuries. Erotic art is a part of many cultures. Each culture sets the bounds of what is legal or not, and we are free to find expression within those boundaries. Different things appeal to different people and no more so between the sexes. What turns men on is and has always been

different to what does it for women. Many of us women don’t get that. Our man fantasizing about other women can be very threatening. But if we are honest, we all do it in our own way. However, while it is in our head, it is hidden; on the screen, it can’t be ignored. Nor can the fears it may bring up. It is a taboo-ridden area with continuously conflicting social mores and double standards. It is no wonder that we have so many differences on the subject in relationships. What is important is to understand is the drivers in your own individual expression or repression of your sexuality. What and why you find certain things threatening/confrontational is a difficult but necessary topic for you both to explore as honestly and as judgement free as you can. There is plenty of helpful literature on the subject available. As to the other important issue that you brought up regarding Vickie’s concerns about the potential effect on your children. The issues here are being; 1) what are you modelling, 2) what will your children think about the info on those sites, 3) perhaps more importantly, what they will think about the person who is using them. If Vickie’s and your concern is truly about your children gaining access to inappropriate sex sites, then I suggest (as the police do) that the computer is kept and used in a family space that is available to and viewable by all. Where you, as parents, can monitor what they can google. The earlier this is started in a child’s life, the more used they are to the idea and there will be less struggle to keep it out of the “privacy” of their own personal space ie bedrooms. Today, what children can get access to and the harm it can do is a very real concern. Insisting on these procedures to me is responsible parenting practice. As to the question of what your children may think of the example of what you are modelling; Well, what would you think if you were them at their age? My question to you is, is this what you want them assuming about your or about sexual attitudes. If it is not, how are you going to go about creating the attitudes and beliefs that you value in this area? How our children see themselves, are comfortable in their sexuality and are respectful of others has a great deal to do with what we as parents model. What do you as parents want for them and how you go about achieving that is a very important issue that needs to be sorted out. Be aware that what you don’t say can be as important as what you do say. It is something that you both need to be on the same page about. Robin.

If you are a local business I invite you to create a listing on the page, it’s one way we can all access local services, connect and continue supporting local business in The Gap Ward.

Brisbane’s Economic Recovery Program

Over the past few months the coronavirus pandemic has had a huge impact on Brisbane’s economy and businesses in The Gap Ward have faced big challenges. Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner has recently appointed an Economic Recovery Taskforce to rebuild our city’s economy with the main focus on LOCAL. This includes a $7.9 million business relief package to waive fees, charges and rents until 30 June 2020, as well as a strong business plan to support the community and small business. Council has implemented support tools to engage with small business owners and Council has a dedicated Business Hotline 133BNE where Business Liaison Officers are working to help business get back on their feet. The ‘Business in Brisbane’ Facebook group is also a great way of connecting businesses to the resources available through Council. Earlier this year the Lord Mayor launched ‘Brisbane Buy Local Blitz’ to encourage us to think about where we spend our money. To support Council’s initiatives I have recently added The Gap Ward Small Business Directory to my webpage www.steventoomey.com.au

Bush Neighbour Program - Tree Planting McGinn Road Park, Ferny Grove

Last year I was contacted by Chelsea, a student in Ferny Grove State School’s Bush Neighbour Program who requested council plant more trees into McGinn Road Park. Her aim was to attract birds and provide Councillor Steven Toomey inspecting h a b i t a t f o r l o c a l the new trees planted at McGinn Road fauna to increase the Park, Ferny Grove diversity in the park. I am very pleased to have been able to support this request, and recently a variety of local native trees were planted into the park. This program brings awareness to our local habitat and I look forward to working with students to improve diversity within the park.

Everton News from your State Member for Everton TIM MANDER

SUPPORTING LOCAL BUSINESS

Now that we have flattened the curve of COVID-19 infection rate and kept the infection rate within the capabilities of our health system, it is time to get our economy running again. With as few as a dozen active cases, it is important that we get thousands of Queenslanders back to work. As restrictions start to ease, I would encourage you to support local businesses. Small business is the lifeblood of the Queensland economy and there is no better place to start than to shop locally. I recently did a ‘tour’ of coffee shops in the electorate (18!) to encourage them and to promote the ‘buy local’ concept. Many of our local businesses support community and sporting clubs so now is our chance to give something back to them.

THANK YOU TO OUR TEACHERS AND STAFF

Schools are back to full attendance (Woo Hoo!) which is another sign of returning to normal, albeit different. Thank you to our school teachers and staff who have had a challenging time providing a hybrid system of education. It has been stressful for everyone, including parents. I am looking forward to attending school events once again as soon as we get the go-ahead to gather in larger numbers.

EKKA LONG WEEKEND

With the ‘Ekka’ being cancelled this year, the Brisbane public holiday that normally falls on the Wednesday has been switched to Friday 14th August. This creates a long weekend which is a chance for us to get away for a few days and support the Queensland tourism industry. No other State relies on tourism as much as Queensland so it is important that we help them get back on their feet as soon as possible.

Treasurer Required!

Men of the Trees Queensland (MOTT Qld) is a non-profit, nonpolitical international society dedicated in fostering the planting, maintenance and protection of trees. The Queensland Society was formed in 1980 and is based in Brisbane. The organisation plant trees in parks as well as in degraded urban and rural areas. The Society also encourages the development of systems for tree planting to suit specific needs. The scope of the Society’s tree planting activities is limited only by the level of membership and the necessary funding to implement projects. MOTT are in need of a Treasurer starting in June. This is a voluntary position which would suit someone who has some Bookkeeping knowledge and an interest in ecology. For further information please email Jan at jaa52@tpg.com.au. Dickson News from your Federal Member for Dickson PETER DUTTON

A Message from Peter

We are now on the road to recovery from COVID-19. At 13 June, we will begin stage two of the Prime Minister’s Roadmap to Recovery here in Queensland; religious gatherings of up to twenty people will be allowed, gyms will be re-opening and restaurants serving up to twenty patrons, as well as other restrictions being eased. Please visit Australia.gov.au for the latest information. As restrictions are eased, the Government is providing extra funding for job creating projects. In May, it was announced the Moreton Bay Region will receive an additional $5 million funding for local road projects as part of the $1.8 billion Local Road and Community Infrastructure Program. This program is giving local communities across the country a much needed boost. 18 volunteer organisations in Dickson have also received a boost thanks to funding grants through the Federal Government’s Volunteer Grants Program. Grants between $1,000 and $5,000 will enable organisations to support their volunteers to purchase small equipment and pay fuel, transport and training costs. This will help many local organisations continue their important work in our community. As life slowly returns to normal, please let me know if there is anything I can do to be of assistance. I would love to hear from you. Yours sincerely, Peter

Local Veterans Employment Award Winner – East Coast Apprenticeships

Congratulations to Alan Sparks and the entire team at East Coast Apprenticeships in Strathpine on winning the Veterans Employment Award. The Defence Trade Program at East Coast Apprenticeships has helped many local veterans re-train and learn a new trade, and it is fantastic to see them recognised for their efforts. The extensive range of skills, abilities, behaviours and attributes veterans gain makes them an asset to any workplace, and it’s great to see organisations in our local area recognising this and promoting it as part of their workplace culture. The Veterans’ Employment Awards celebrate the achievements and valuable skills of our veterans and businesses that have gone above and beyond to assist them. There were a record 129 nominations for the 2020 Awards, the highest in the Awards’ three year history. Finalists for the 2020 Awards were selected from across the country, from large, medium and small organisations in a range of industries and professions. Further information on the awards and winners, including the full announcement video, can be found on the Prime Minister’s Veterans’ Employment Program website www. veteransemployment.gov.au.

Supporting Local Businesses

It has been a hard time for many small business owners. The Government has released a number of support packages to help, including the Job Keeper Package which gives eligible businesses $1500 per fortnight per employee. There are also additional supports available from the federal government and state government for eligible businesses. Please visit www.business.gov.au, www.business.qld.gov.au, or www.Australia.gov.au for the latest information.

What’s important to you?

I’m working hard to make our community even better but I can’t do it on my own. I need your help to make sure we get the priorities right for our community. With your help, and by working together, I know we can get the upgrades, facilities and opportunities our community needs to be even better. Please get in touch with me at peter.dutton.mp@aph.gov.au or 3205 9977 to let me know your priorities. Or you can drop in to my office at 3/199 Gympie Road in Strathpine during business hours. The Ferny Report Mark Furner M.P.

State Member for Ferny Grove

Ferny Grove TOD plans submitted to BCC for final approval

Fantastic News! On Friday the first of May, the final plans to provide extra car parks, shops and many local jobs was submitted to Brisbane City Council (BCC). The State Assessment and Referral Agency and the Department of Transport and Main Roads have given their tick of approval to the plans drawn up by Honeycombes Property Group. The approval sought from the BCC is the final hurdle before the $120 million project can proceed. The Ferny Grove Transit Oriented Development, located at the Ferny Grove Railway Station, will transform the site and will boost local infrastructure while providing hundreds of local jobs. Underground and multi deck commuter carparks, kiss ‘n’ ride, pedestrian links and bicycle store are among the first elements to be delivered as part of the project. The Palaszczuk Government and the Morrison Government have agreed to jointly fund an extra 500 carparks for Ferny Grove Railway Station commuters. The project plans are available on the BCC’s PD Online site and can be accessed here: bit.ly/2WYUgez. I will provide a further update when the Council makes its determination on this much-needed local project.

Ferny Grove State High School to go solar!

Education Minister Grace Grace has made the exciting announcement that Ferny Grove State High School will be our first local school to receive an array of solar panels as part of the Palaszczuk Government’s Advancing Clean Energy Schools (ACES) program. The ACES program is not just important for local jobs and for reducing school energy costs but is an essential step towards Queensland’s clean energy future. Ferny Grove State High will receive its funding allocation in June, while Mitchelton State High School, Mitchelton State Primary School and Mitchelton State Special School are the next schools in line to receive funding locally, with Patricks Road, Ferny Hills and Grovely State Schools to follow.
