Tug of War Champions!

A local Samford Tug of War team the ‘Brisbane Bulldogs’ has recently returned from the Australian championships in Evans Head, New South Wales laden with medals.

Although the competition was fierce this local team won gold medals in seven weight divisions across indoor and outdoor categories at the Australian titles. Additional Silver and Gold medals were also won in other categories. Amongst the team were local Samford resident of 30 years, Paul ‘Fitzy’ Fitzgerald and 13 year old daughter Georgie Fitzgerald. Between them they won four gold medals. Georgie is an outstanding competitor and this is a phenomenal achievement for a 13 year old as she is competing against grown men in the competitions. Additionally, Georgie and Paul have been selected to compete in the 2020 World Games in China. Tug of War is a true non-contact competitive sport suitable for a wide range of abilities. The sport is fully inclusive, it has been found especially suitable for Georgie and Paul Fitzgerald showing off their individuals who would like to participate but lack the coordination/technical medals from the Australian Championships skills required in other sports, such as football. Tug of War is a sport where every member of the team is equal. To succeed a team has to work together, encouraging true cooperation and team discipline. Why not give Tug of War a go? All you need is a long sleeve rugby/footballtype shirt and footwear with smooth soles and heels with no spikes or studs. The Brisbane Bulldogs train every Sunday in Samford. If you are interested in joining the team or have any queries call Fitzy on 0458 844 080.

Mitchelton Football Club Scores a $500K Grant

Mitchelton Football Club has scored a $500,000 grant towards a new full-sized synthetic football pitch.

‘This will be an amazing boost for the club. We will be able to play and train up to 75 hours a week on this new field compared with only 15 hours on our grass surfaces. It will also bring in much needed income that can then be used to improve our other facilities,’ said Club President Brian Cook. Mitchie F.C. has a long history of success. Their mens’ and boys’ teams have recently qualified for the Football Queensland Premier League, while the girls’ and womens’ teams have qualified for the National Premier League. www.hillsecho.com

Beating All The Odds

In The Hills Echo July 2017 issue, we published a story regarding Ferny Hills local, Harlie Russell and the fundraising efforts that were taking place in order to raise the funds required for her Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) surgery in the U.S.A. Here we are one year later and we are so pleased to be able to publish an update on her progress. Read on to discover more about Harlie’s journey over the past year. When little Harlie was diagnosed at 18 months old with spastic quadriplegia cerebral palsy, doctors predicted she would never sit, crawl, talk or walk. After years of physical therapy, Harlie started making gains. She was able to sit on her own but the spasticity was taking over her tiny body and causing constant pain. In July 2016, Harlie was accepted for SDR surgery at St Louis Children’s Hospital in Missouri, USA. The surgery is performed by world renouned neurosurgeron, Dr T.S. Park who predicted that within 12 months of surgery, Harlie would be able to walk. However, the surgery itself, travel and post surgery physical therapy costs totalled over $120,000. The Harlie Russell Foundation was established by members of the Ferny Hills community in an effort to raise funds to allow Harlie and her mother, Jacqui, to travel to St Louis and change Harlie’s life. By August 2017, the foundation had achieved their goal and Harlie set off on a life changing journey. Harlie spent one month in the USA, undergoing two procedures and attending daily physical therapy. Her body was finally relieved of the spasticity that had caused years

Physiotherapist Jackie Patterson, Dr TS Park, SDR Coordinator Deanna Walter and Harlie of pain and disfiguration to her legs. Harlie was now able to straighten her legs and stand with a smile. Upon her return to Australia, Harlie joined PropelFit gym at Ashgrove to commence strength and conditioning training under her coach, Grant Jenkins. For five days each week, Harlie works tirelessly on building muscles in her whole body and is now able to stand with minimal assistance and has taken her very first steps in a walking frame. Harlie and her family would like to extend a huge thank you to The Hills community for their continuing support. The Harlie Russell Foundation are still raising funds for Harlie’s vital ongoing therapy and equipment. All donations to the foundation over $2 are tax deductible. If you would like to contribute to Harlie’s future, visit www.harlierussellfoundation.org

Technology Talks with St William’s

‘Litter’ Warriors

Lunch time in any school yard is a hive of activity and noise!

Everywhere you look there is a football being kicked, handballs being batted, circles of chit-chat and laughs, books capturing imaginations, climbing, skipping, running…you get the gist. However, at St Andrew’s Primary School, Ferny Grove, three Year 3 Students decided to spend their lunch break a little differently. They took it upon themselves, with no direction or suggestion, to go on an environmental mission to pick up rubbish. What a marvellous job they did too. S t A n d r e w ’s w a s so proud of these students that they shared the good news on social media and even captured the attention and praise of our Local Member of Parliament, Cr Steve Toomey. Cr Toomey surprised the students by coming to our School Assembly and presenting them with certificates of appreciation for their Principal, John Leyden, Cr Steve Toomey efforts. Way to go Emily, Anthony and with Anthony, Koby, Emily and their Koby! Certificates of Appreciation.

We take Technology seriously at St William’s. Eleven teachers from St William’s attended the Teach Tech Play Conference in Melbourne during the Easter holidays.

Our teachers are passionate about creating positive, engaging and innovative learning experiences that seek to challenge our students to make positive changes in the world and create better opportunities for all. Tuesday is Techy Tuesday for both the children and staff at St William’s. During their break times the children are welcome to come into the Cybrary and participate in coding activities and competitions as well as robotics activities. After school, the staff congregate to discuss all things technology – looking at Office365, current trends, assistive technology for the classroom, Technology in the curriculum all with the aid of cupcakes, crackers and dips (the important things). We are currently refurbishing our Cybrary to make a more flexible learning space for our children. Our specialist Technology teacher has worked hard to get this space ready for the children. Sphero’s roam the floor and there was just a tiny bit of excitement as we unpacked the new LEGO robotics kits. Our students learn coding and ways to program the robots to solve problems, follow co-ordinates and connect to apps that relay patterns and instructions. At St William’s we inspire a love to learn by engaging students with tools that provide both excitement and challenge. For some 80 years, trams were the mainstay of public transport in Brisbane, carrying their passengers to work, sport, recreation and most other events There were few buses and few trains so trams carried the majority of citizens to their various activities. Set in about 5 acres at Ferny Grove, the museum has six fully operational trams ranging in age from 117 years to a youthful 54!! Plus a working replica horse-drawn tram from the late 1800’s. There are two other trams undergoing restoration with several more to follow. All work is carried out by volunteers—there are NO PAID employees. Tram crew are subject to strict medical tests and to random Drug & Alcohol testing. Included in the museum is the Ferny Grove Mens’ Shed, whose members assist with the tram works and also perform work for other local organisations. The museum is open each Sunday (weather permitting) from 12.30 pm to 4pm, with all six trams available for rides. It is also available for charters by groups such as pensioner clubs, service clubs, weddings etc For more information and bookings please ring 3351 1776 or visit the website www.brisbanetramwaymuseum.org See the next edition of The Hills Echo for news of our great 50th Birthday Gala Event!

Parkfront homes attract strong buyer interest in Everton Hills

The first home release within The Hills Residences is already more than 50% sold, with local downsizers and first home buyers moving quickly to secure their parkfront residences. Launched in April, The Hills Residences is located on the corner of Francis and Bunya Roads in Everton Hills, only a short distance to local schools, transport and retail precincts. One-third of this vibrant new community is dedicated to open space, with a large central park and 3,500sqm of preserved bushland located a short stroll from every home. Sunland Group Managing Director, Sahba Abedian, said the early sales success of The Hills Residences demonstrated the inherent value of sophisticated architectural design and established amenity. ‘These homes represent the latest evolution of Sunland’s awardwinning designs, featuring striking framed façades that create, as a whole, a well-defined collection of architectural art,’ he said. ‘Each double-storey home features a mix of three-bedroom and three-bedroom-plus-study designs, complete with a multipurpose room, two bathrooms, guest powder room, generous living areas and quality finishes. ‘A selection of homes enjoy aspects overlooking the landscaped central park and the adjoining nature reserve.’ Stylish gourmet kitchen features reconstituted stone bench tops, high-gloss cabinetry, and quality appliances, and flows seamlessly to the indoor living areas. Bathroom design is beautiful as well as functional, with large porcelain tiles, custom-made vanities, stylish reconstituted stone benchtops and premium fittings.

Prices in this first home release start from $470,000. The developer behind global icons Palazzo Versace and Q1, Sunland Group is a leading national property developer with more than three decades’ experience delivering award-winning, design-driven communities along Australia’s eastern seaboard. Mr Abedian said The Hills Residences is superbly located within the established amenity of Everton Hills, close to local schools, public transport, and neighbourhood retail precincts. Grovely Train Station is an easy four-minute drive away, with direct services to the Brisbane CBD. Home construction is scheduled to commence during the second half of 2018. The project is being jointly marketed by Colliers International and Sunland Group. For more information, visit sunlandgroup. com.au/thehills or phone 1300 822 601.

The Hills are alive...

For many people ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ is their absolutely favourite Shakespeare comedy.

The edgy, witty quarreling of Beatrice and Benedict has a really modern feel, as do the deep moral questions the play poses. The town’s klutzy constables, Dogberry and Verges, are some of Shakespeare’s funniest comic characters. Our energetic actors are adept at making Shakespeare’s story and script crystal clear and the audience is assured of a very funny, feisty evening. SPADEWerx Community Theatre is presenting ‘Much Ado’ during the upcoming school and Uni holidays. We are a notfor-profit theatre group, open to all, based at St Paul’s Church Samford. Profits from each production are donated to local causes. We are always looking for new members and suggest interested people should come to “Much Ado” and consider joining future productions. We already have several Hills District members. Performances will take place on Saturday 29th June, Friday 6th July and Saturday 7th July at 7.30pm at Samford Farmers’ Hall Main St Samford. There will also be another performance on Saturday 14th July at the Dayboro Community Hall, Dayboro at 7.30pm. Tickets are $20 for an adult and $15 for concessions and students and will be available for purchase at the door or buy prior to performance from Samford Copy Centre.

X marks the spot: researching cemeteries

Discovering the graves of our ancestors can be extremely rewarding. Presented by Helen Vince, this workshop looks at the resources available for finding those grave sites. As well as examining online resources, the workshop will provide practical tips and traps for the unwary. Where: Queensland Family History Library and Resource Centre, 58 Bellevue Ave, Gaythorne. When: Friday 8 June 2018 from 10am - 11.30 am. Cost is $11 member - $15 non member. Book online at: https://www.qfhs.org.au/ events/fridays-qfhs/ www.hillsecho.com

Samford Museum Celebrations

On the 1st July, 100 years will have passed since the first train service that came to Samford and the business community was established in the main street of the village. Back then John Scott Park was the Samford Railway Station and goods yards. It is remarkable that during WW1 a railway line was built to service the primary producing districts from Enoggera, reaching Samford 1918, Samsonvale in 1919 and Dayboro in 1920. Rail services ceased in 1955 from Ferny Grove to Dayboro. On Sunday 1st July from 10am to 4pm Samford Museum (on former Samford Railway Station land) will host a day of celebrations. Admission is by donation and Queensland Rail historian Greg Hallam will be the guest speaker with many stories to tell. Why not browse through early photo displays of the railway, business, Main Street and village changes at the event? A Heritage Trail booklet will also be available for collection and a guided walk will take place at 1pm to see firsthand the changes that have taken place. This is a great opportunity to catch up with friends of days gone by. If you have any Samford and rail memorabilla or photos please feel free to bring them along to share. Please email the Samford Museum at info@ samfordmuseum.com.au or call Geoff on 0417 691 983 for more information.

50th Year Celebrations Kicked off in May

What a great month of May we’ve just had for the 50th Year of The Hills District & Bunya Garden Competition. Not only did we have our own events but we were also included in the wonderful Hills Festival program. On Saturday 5th May Afternoon Tea in the 2017 Winning Backyard Garden at Ferny Hills took place. This was a huge success with many visitors enjoying Odette’s beautiful garden and taking away great ideas for their own home. Hopefully in the future we can keep and improve on this open garden theme. Saturday 19th May saw the launch of the garden competition at the Arana Hills Library. This officially headed the garden comp into its 50th Year. Library visitors were able to talk to committee and past grand champions and take home some free plants and cuttings to add to their own gardens. So now is a great time to start preparing your garden for Spring. As June is traditionally a slow growing month, plan out your garden design, clean up, repair, weed and mulch. When that spring growth starts you’ll be well on the way to enjoying your garden at its best. As a reward for putting in all this effort why don’t you consider entering the 50th year for our local garden competition. Remember Entry is free. We are not looking for a Grand Champion garden but the average caring gardener who has a loved, enjoyed, possibly inspired and cared for garden. This year, being our 50th, we have made your entry much more memorable with a plaque for every entrant that can go up on your fence or mailbox. Plus we have a lovely engraved hand trowel for each entrant along with a wall certificate. And we can’t forget all our wonderful sponsors who supply many vouchers and products from hardware, travel, fertilizers, plumbing, electrical, coffee, dinners, health & fitness, pool, jewellery and many more. So get your garden ready now for the September 9th judging. Be a part of our 50th Celebratory Year and fill out the entry form below. Keep watching our facebook page for updates on the competition www.facebook.com/hdbgc or visit our website www.fhpa.org.au for further details. eorge Hartnett Metropolitan Funerals is proudly Australian owned and has over 145 years of experience serving families across Brisbane. Robin Drury is the manager of the new location in Arana Hills and is ready to serve the community in both arranging family funerals and also providing advice for pre-arranging and prepaid funerals. Robin brings 20 years of experience and is delighted to be serving his own local community. He first came to the funeral industry when he lost his brother and this was the influence for him to join the industry and to care for families in the same way his own family had been cared for in their time of need.

“After serving the community for the time I have, I personally value the family unit and understand how important it is that I serve with all my heart. This line of work is not a job for me; it is my vocation and has been for half my life. -Robin Drury

He is passionate about caring for families and believes it is a privilege to serve every family and work together to meet their different needs. He recognises no two families are the same, so he seeks out the special needs of each family and incorporates it into the service for their loved one. This personal touch ensures every family is treated as a priority and his experience and dedication means he will go to any length to ensure he delivers the best service for every family. Robin is delighted to invite the local community to join him for a cuppa and have them come in for a guided tour of the new location, chat about the funeral services available and what can and can’t be done, ask what really happens and find out about insurance vs pre-paid funerals. Robin is happy to answer any of the questions you have always wanted to ask but never had the chance. Robin Drury is proud to serve his local community. His door is always open!

The Priority Report

#24

Get your pool ready for winter

Celebrating 5 Years

Winterise your pool and save on chemicals, running costs and maintenance. Although, it’s not as simple as just putting on the cover and forgetting about it! To avoid additional costs and time consuming work when summer comes around again:

This June our office is celebrating 5 years since first opening the doors. It has been a great 5 years with 300+ sales and steady growth of our rental roll. We’d like to thank everyone in the community who have supported us over the years and look forward to the next 5 years.

1. Clean the pool— remove all leaves and debris out of pool. Clean out both the skimmer basket and anything caught in the pump basket. 2. Clean the filter— a backwash is usually sufficient, can also use a filter degreaser to really get in and remove sunscreen residue, body oils and other undesirables. 3. Balance the water— take a sample of the water to your nearest pool store to ensure the water is balanced and all levels are within optimum ranges. 4. Check equipment is working properly—a clean and well maintained pump will save you money. 5.Winterise— as the temperatures are now consistently lower, Winterise your pool now and the long term algaecides will last all the way through to Summer. There are a number of “Winterises” in the market—talk to your local pool guy for their suggestions.

Legislation Changes to Depreciation on Plant and Equipment In May 2017 the government proposed changes to the depreciation of plant and equipment assets. The proposed changes were then passed in November 2017. The changes remove a subsequent owner’s ability to claim a depreciation deduction for previously used plant and equipment assets (the easily removable or mechanical fixtures and fittings) in properties which exchanged contracts after the 9th of May 2017. The legislation also confirms that the proposed changes will only apply to second hand residential investment properties. Any investors who purchase a brand new property can continue to claim depreciation for plant and equipment as normal.

Beware the Bucket Bomb!

The capital works allowance, which is the component investors can deduct for the building structure is unchanged.

Last month at a building and pest inspection the inspector came across two buckets that had been left in the roof from a previous issue that was repaired after the 2011 floods. The buckets set off alarm bells for the inspector and the buyer.

Older properties that have been renovated and qualifying capital works that have been completed by a previous owner can be claimed by the new owner for any years that remain in the forty year period. www.bmtqs.com.au

Although there was not a current leak in the roof the buyer wasn’t convinced and this almost crashed the contract, which created great stress for the seller. Maintenance is key when preparing for a sale and a few small issues can be very costly.

Love Food, Hate Waste

Local Walking Group

Food waste is the largest volume of avoidable materials that goes into Brisbane landfill every year. On average each Brisbane household sends more than 260kgs of food to landfill each year.

There are several Heart Foundation walking groups operating in the Moreton Bay region. These groups provide opportunities to walk with friends and provide the benefits of a safer, social and supportive atmosphere. Ferny Hills has a number of available days and times Monday, Tuesday and Thursday at 4:30pm starting at Ferny Hills Pool Car Park and Monday’s 9am at Wahminda Park. For more information visit www.moretonbay.qld.gov.au/healthy-active/

Food waste is usually unintentional, resulting from busy lives and not using food wisely. 48% of people opt to buy more food than they need, rather than risk not having enough. To reduce the amount of good food going to waste Brisbane City Council has joined the international Love Food Hate Waste movement and wants to help reduce food waste at home. For tips on how to reduce your food waste visit brisbane.qld.gov.au and search ‘Love Food.’

Mitchelton Garden Club On Thursday 5th July, the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club meets at the Enoggera Memorial Hall on the junction of Pratt and Wardell Streets, Enoggera. The guest speaker is Margaret M o r r o w, a f o u n d a t i o n member of this club, and she will talk about Camellias, touching on the history and cultivation of this plant. Camellias have become very popular. There are so many varieties with features that cover whatever the gardener desires e.g. shrubs, pot plants, hedges, bonsai, dwarf, etc. An added advantage is their flowering season - winter - a time when other flowering shrubs are in the process of getting ready for new growth. The flower shapes come in many forms such as flat, bowl or cup shaped, Some have large outer petals with a centre comprising of mixed petals and stamens - all set among rich green glossy leaves. Camellias produce a profusion of buds and to avoid over-crowding of the blooms it is a good idea to disbud when the buds are small so the plant can put more energy into creating well shaped flowers. The roots of camellias are close to the surface which should be kept moist but not water-logged. This plant likes a semi-shaded position which does not receive morning sun. Petals of opening buds are often burnt by the sun. Do you know that every time you drink a cup of tea, it is made from leaves of a particular camellia - Camellia Senensis? The club meets on the first Thursday of the calendar month. The meeting commences after morning tea which is served at 9.45 a.m. For more information please phone 3356 1256. www.hillsecho.com

Those attending have all found it to be a fun, exciting and meaningful time of worship. So come and join us on the 3rd Saturday of the month from 4.30pm (for a 5pm start) to 7pm. The next Messy Church is on Saturday 16th June 2018. The church is located at the corner of Cycas and Alstonia Streets, Arana Hills (parking off Cestrum St). THUMBS UP THUMBS DOWN THUMBS DOWN to Qld government

downgrading the importance of English as a core subject for Uni entrance. I wonder what language they would prefer our children to master?

THUMBS UP to all those getting ready to watch soccor World Cup and support the Socceroos. It is the worlds’ biggest sporting audience and I hope it is remembered for spectacular goals and not actors writhing around unhurt. THUMBS DOWN to the quality of leadership

in Qld’s local councils. Corruption, nepotism, cronyism, sly deals with deveopers and now Mayors and CEO’s being criminally charged. Instead of sacking just one Council, why not sack the lot and press DELETE on this unnecessary level of government?

THUMBS UP the Qld Reds’ optimism. They

can go from last in 2017 to last in 2018 and call it a year of improvement.

THUMBS UP to State of Origin time again. Unfortunately it is now such a TV spectator sport that fans need to fly to Melbourne to enjoy the atmosphere.

WOMEN in Business Due to the popularity of our Women In Buiness feature that was published in our May issue, we are pleased to present a second edition this month.

In this feature we are celebrating nine incredible local business women who have taken a leap of faith and are making a name for themselves in small business. From knitting experts to psychologists to audiologists, all these ladies are from truly diverse industries. Australian women are increasingly becoming business operators, perhaps to improve their families’ social and economic wellbeing, remain attached to the labour force or better manage their work-life balance. Just over a third of Australia’s business operators are women (34%) and their numbers are rising. Currently there are 600,000 women operating their own small business within Australia. At universities, in workplaces, in boardrooms and in government, a growing number of women have also taken on leadership roles, forging pathways for other women and girls to follow. We have also compiled an online ‘Mini Mag’ that contains all the ladies from edition one and two of this feature, so head online to have a read www.hillsecho.com/women-in-business IMPORTANT NOTE! The correct web address for Native Beauty and Wellness is www.nativebeautyandwellness.com.au An incomplete address was shown in their ad in last month’s Feature. Please make note of the correct address.

GENTLEMEN It’s Your Turn Next!

Eva-Maria Steinkamp Knitting Expert - Creative Knits Are you looking for something fun and creative to do in the holidays? Have you ever wanted to learn how to knit but found it hard to get started? Ferny Hills Knitting expert Eva-Maria Steinkamp is excited to be hosting not 1 but 3 workshops at this year's Fibre Arts Festival, in Maleny on the 1st July. Eva-Maria has been knitting since she was a little girl. By the time she was a teenager, her knitting skills were so advanced that she designed and hand knitted jumpers for herself as well as her family and friends. Her passion and enthusiasm for textiles motivated her to study Textile Design in her homeland Germany, culminating in a Textile Design Degree with a major in Knitwear. Knitting these days isn't just for grandmothers, it's a past- time that is attracting all age groups. Did you know that knitting has quite a few health benefits besides creating your own special garments or accessories?

0474 229 556

Since the popularity of knitting has increased over the last few years, there has been a lot of research into what knitting does to the knitter. The rhythmic, repetitive movement, focus and relaxation has the same benefits to your body and mind as if you meditate. This fact alone should be reason enough to take it up as a hobby. All knitting patterns no matter how easy or difficult they are, have been developed from two basic stitches, Knit and Purl which makes it an easy hobby to learn. Eva-Maria's workshops include; Natural dyeing with avocado pits and skins, Create the easiest scarf in the world and The Famous 10 Stitch Knitting Pattern. With over 30 workshops at this year‘s Knitfest Yarn & Fibre Arts Festival, there will be something for the whole family. For more details visit www. knitfest.com.au

Arana Netball News

Fixtures in the Downey Park competition are well under way, with the middle of fixtures occurring around mid-June.

Mothers’ Day weekend is traditionally Pink Day at Downey Park, for fund-raising to support Breast Cancer awareness and research. This year, as always, Arana Netball Club was a forerunner in taking part in this event. Well done to teams entering and playing in association carnivals, as a way to extend their netball experience. The most common carnivals that Arana teams compete in are the local ones – Downey Park in May, Pine Rivers junior carnival in June, and Brisbane Netball early in August. Arana Netball has monthly meetings throughout the year, to facilitate the smooth operations of the club. Meetings are held on the third Monday of the month, at the Arana Sports meeting room, in the front section of The Hills District Community Centre, Dawson Parade. Meetings commence at 7.30pm and are open for all interested parties to intend – including parents and team managers, and senior players, as well as Committee members. The next meeting is scheduled for Monday 18th June. During the playing season, Arana Netball has their rostered turns on the raffles at the Arana Leagues Club on Thursday nights and Sunday afternoons. This is the Club’s main regular extra fund-raiser each year to supplement the fund-raising levy incorporated in player fees for each family. The Mother’s Day raffle conducted by the club as a one-off extra fund-raiser raised $741 - a special thanks to businesses who generously donated the prizes. Counsellor’s Column with Robin Botic

Dear Robin, Just how friendly should you be with ex-partners? I ask this question because my fiancee gives me what sounds like all the right answers but I feel uncomfortable about the closeness of her relationship with her ex-partner, with whom she has a son who is now 10 years old. They separated three years ago. We met a year after this. Sometimes I feel like it’s a threesome. Her rationale is that she wants her son to feel happy and that he still has a family feel with her and his father. My experience is that she will drop what she or we are doing to meet her ex’s requests and she continually finds ways against my wishes to invite him along with us when I feel we should be having ‘us’ time. I quite like the bloke but I don‘t want to spend my weekends with him - he left her for another woman and when that fell through she seems on a mission to include him wherever she can. I feel like a third wheel when he’s around. She just says I’m jealous and not interested in meeting the needs of her son and her sense of family. She says she wants our relationship and to be with me. It doesn’t feel this way and I’m seriously thinking about getting out. How can I make her see her behaviour is over the top? Ben. Dear Ben, Relationship boundaries can become very murky in these types of situations where children are also involved. A lot of agendas seem to be at work here. If both you and your fiancee can really come to grips with why you are doing what you are doing, you may be able to establish more healthy boundaries around your relationship. I haven’t seen threesomes really work. Twosomes are hard enough. Some of the unconscious agendas that may be at work with regard to your fiancee could be the need to overcome the feelings of rejection she may have experienced at her ex’s ending their relationship via the choice of another woman. Her over-accommodating behaviour can be a way of regaining his acceptance and proving to herself that she is okay and better than the one he left her for. It doesn’t mean she doesn’t love you. The method of repair, however, is not the best way of going about it for either her or your relationship. The need to keep creating a sense of family even when the traditional lines have broken down is again about belief systems she holds dear because or in spite of her childhood experience of family. Some part of her wants to hang on to this for her sake because of what she feels she has failed somehow to provide for her son. Without telling or lecturing, you could explore with her the

THE WORK WELL

feelings she has about herself if she doesn’t behave in the way she is. That is: ‘If you didn’t do this, how would you feel about yourself or your mothering role etc?’ Tackling it from the back end, so to speak, often allows us to see what these vulnerable feelings are about. Also be really honest and clear about your own feelings here. Are you jealous? Do you feel left out etc? You are the couple. You are planning to marry. This is where her energy should primarily be. Her ex can look after himself. It’s wonderful when people in these situations can like each other and work together to co-parent, but there are limits and the family feel excursions should be limited to special occasions. You have to create your own sense of family with your stepson-to-be, as will his father if and when he re-partners. Things will dramatically change then, and this is something that your fiancee, in the best interests of her son, needs to consider. Robin.

Ferny Grove TOD - Movilla Park This week the Council took the decision not to support the conversion of Movilla Street Park into a car park during the construction of the Ferny Grove Transit Orientated Development. The application did not demonstrate Movilla Park would meet the needs of the community during the construction period and negatively impact on the amenity of the surrounding residents. The conversion of the carpark is inconsistent with the current Ferny Grove-Upper Kedron Neighbourhood Plan and this view was supported in a resident survey with less than 6% supporting the park conversion to a car park. Presenting a new Australian flag to the Ferny Grove Bowls Club taxpayers in Ryan will keep more of their hard earned income; 2018 Budget The 2018 Budget details the Coalition Government’s plan for supporting small business by extending the instant asset write-off; investing in congestion-busting infrastructure a stronger economy. projects; supporting more older Australians in Ryan to stay Under the Government’s Economic Plan jobs are being in their homes; guaranteeing the NDIS; and fully funding The created. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, National Health Agreement. 2017 saw the strongest year of jobs growth on record, with 415,000 jobs (more than 1,000 a day) created; three quarters Our record of financial responsibility means that under our plan, Australians can plan for their future with confidence. Budget measures include providing responsible tax relief for liberal.org.au. low and middle income earners, ensuring more than 64,000 School Chaplaincy Funding I have seen firsthand the positive impact the National School Chaplaincy Programme has in Ryan schools and the strong community support they receive. I am pleased the Government continues to support our Chappies through extending the National School Chaplaincy Programme on a permanent basis. There are 22 schools across Ryan that will benefit from a $247m Budget funding boost so that chaplains can continue their vital role supporting the health and wellbeing of young people. This funding means school chaplains can continue to provide important pastoral care and run programs such as breakfast clubs and other volunteer activities within their school communities. The Programme will have a greater focus on bullying, specifically cyberbullying, with chaplains required to undertake training to ensure they are fully equipped to deal with these challenges. Make the Switch to the New Child Care System Almost 6,500 families in Ryan will soon benefit from the Coalition Government’s new child care package and additional $2.5 billion investment to provide more support for more families. I encourage families to start their transition to the new system as soon as possible via MyGov or www.education. gov.au/childcare to ensure they continue receiving subsidies when the new package commences on 2 July.

The Ferny Report Mark Furner M.P. State Member for Ferny Grove

It was lovely to catch up with so many of the Principals, P&C and P&F Presidents and Secretaries for Ferny Grove’s first P&C Roundtable with Education Minister Grace Grace.

TOD UPDATE I was very disappointed to learn the Brisbane City Council refused to even accept an application by Honeycombes, the government’s contractor for the Ferny Grove Transit Oriented Development (TOD), to use part of the Movilla St Park as temporary car parking during the TOD build. One of the conditions the government has placed on the contractor is to limit the impact the construction will have on commuter parking. Honeycombes’ plan was to use part of the Park during the two year build and then restore and beautify the park to improve its use for local residents. I am hopeful the Council will reconsider its position as it would be more considerate to local residents and to commuters alike. Queensland Rail chose the Ferny Grove Railway Station as an appropriate site for a TOD because it meets the future planning needs and because it is not possible to extend the rail line any further. Much of the land which the old Samford rail corridor once occupied is now privately owned. I am determined to see the TOD built as quickly and as efficiently as possible as it will relieve the parking pressures to which the station is already subject. I have already secured $9 million in government funding for additional commuter car parks for the TOD and have ensured the designs allow for even more future expansion. I will fight hard to get the funding over the next few state budgets to build as much of the car parking capacity as the site will allow in the shortest possible time.

The TOD will prove to be a valuable asset to our community as in addition to the increased commuter parking it will create hundreds of jobs in the area both during the build and after construction is completed. NEW AMBULANCES The Palaszczuk Government is committed to the safety of our community and has provided three new vehicles to our local Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) Station in Mitchelton. I had the opportunity recently to catch up with some of our hard-working QAS officers and hand over the keys. The provision of the new ambulances will improve standards and will assist in shortening response times when most needed.
