Fire Safety Gets Creative
Young Picassos get your pens at the ready! The Children’s Fire Poster Competition is on again this year.
This annual competition is organized by the Lions Clubs of Queensland, in conjunction with the Queensland Fire and Emergency Service (QFES) and is designed to educate and bring awareness to our local school children regarding the importance of Fire Safety. This year the Arana Hills Fire Station and Golden Valley Keperra Lions Club will be busy rolling this competition out in a number of schools in The Hills District. The theme of this year’s competition is ‘Fire Safety At Home’ which incorporates two vital elements - having a fire escape plan and the importance of functional smoke alarms. The competition is only open to Grade Four students and they will be asked to demonstrate (via their poster) some fire safety measures relating to their home environment using the competition themes. The winners from our district will then be put forward to the State level competition. The Hills Echo recently had the opportunity to catch up with some of the team at the Arana Hills Fire Station who explained the importance of this competition. ‘We hope that school children will take this message from school and into the home which will bring awareness to the whole family regarding fire safety,’ said Arana Hills fire fighter Ross Mitchell. ‘Each year we are blown away by our local kid’s creativity and how they use their imagination to create educational works of art.’ The Arana Hills Firefighters said the two themes chosen this

year by QFES, ‘Smoke Alarms in the Home’ and ‘Fire Escape Plans’ are extremely fitting as new legislation regarding smoke alarms has now been introduced. The new legislation specifies that all Queensland dwellings will be required to have interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms in all bedrooms, in hallways that connect bedrooms with the rest of the house and on every level. ‘At the end of the day working smoke alarms save lives. We urge local residents to check their smoke alarms are clean and are tested regularly,’ said Station Officer Ryan Woods. He also explained that having a Fire Evacuation point at home can help prevent fire fighters being placed in potentially dangerous situations. ‘We recommend that the Fire Evacuation point at home is the front letterbox,’ said Ryan. ‘This is vitally important if people within the household are not accounted for and are thought to still be in the home, then it is our duty to go into the premises to find them.’ The Hills Echo looks forward to updating you on the progress of this exciting competition in the upcoming months. For more information and legislations regarding fire safety please visit www.qfes.qld.gov.au

Wahminda Pond Will Remain
Concerns were raised by residents regarding the destruction of Wahminda Pond located beside Samford Road in Ferny Hills. Residents are fearful for local wildlife as they feel the pond provides a vital habitat and water source for a variety of flora and fauna.
The pond was set to be filled in as part of a $2.7million project to build a path and bridge to link to the Samford Rail Trail and Wahminda Park. This infrastructure would comprise of a 3m wide, 850m long pathway, landscaping, culvert extension, earthworks and fencing to a 25m bridge over Kedron Brook. On 27th February a group of protesters gathered at Wahminda Pond to confront the local council regarding the destruction of the pond. Green’s candidate for the federal electorate of Dickson Benedict Coyne was also in attendance and addressed the protesters, urging them to contact Moreton Bay Regional Council and request a meeting with Cr Constance. ‘We feel that there was inadequate community consultation. Whether the pond is man made or not is irrelevant, there are living creatures that rely on that water source for survival and life is life and always worth fighting for. All we wanted was the pond to be included in the plans and not removed,’ said Melanie Massa of Save Wahminda Lagoon Group. Following protests from the local community, Moreton Bay Regional Council has given an undertaking that Wahminda Pond will not be drained. Moreton Bay Regional Councillors Matt Constance and Darren Grimwade have requested the project teams redesign the scope of works to preserve the old excavation pit.
www.hillsecho.com
‘It’s clear locals want the pond to remain, so we have asked Council staff to make sure that happens and ensure locals are heard,’ Cr Constance said. ‘I’m concerned the advice we’ve received from Council officers about the structure of the pond and its water quality might be outdated, so I welcome the offer from a local ecologist to undertake an independent wildlife study and water quality assessment. ‘I’m keen to allow that to happen this weekend, that way we’ll be operating on the most up-to-date information.’ Councillor Grimwade said in order to minimise construction costs to ratepayers while new design works are undertaken, the construction team on site will continue the work associated with the new bridge and pathway to the east and west of the pond and associated rehabilitation and replanting program. ‘This $1.8 million project will see invasive weeds cleared out and more than 1700 square metres revegetated with thousands of native trees, shrubs and grasses,’ he said. ‘We know that the old excavation pit was dug around 40 years ago as a source of fill during construction work along Samford Rd that altered the natural watercourse through the area. ‘But if this has evolved into a sustainable habitat which supports local wildlife, then I agree it’s more beneficial to invest in reinforcing the structure of the pond than remove this water source. ‘We want this project to deliver a vibrant, natural parkland for wildlife and residents to enjoy in harmony. ‘It’s clear that won’t be achieved if we proceed with the current plan.’

Channel Swimming Champions
Kenny Smith and Leah Tannock McGuire with their medals On Saturday 23 February Samford local, Leah Tannock McGuire from Samford Swim Club travelled to Western Australia to compete in the Rottnest Channel Swim. She joined forces with Kenny Smith from Perth to create the Moonburners Team - Duo Team 522. The Duo completed the swim in a sensational time of 8:04:01 coming a whopping 11 out of 51 teams. Congratulations to you both! This competition is highly regarded worldwide and is one of Western Australia’s iconic events. The swim is from Cottesloe Beach to Rotto and is 19.7km in distance (if you swim in a straight line. The team believe they did at least 30km). For our readers that are unfamiliar with Ocean Swimming, swimming in the ocean is nothing like swimming in a pool. You have to alter your stroke, stroke rate, breathing and constantly changing course which makes this sport extremely Leah in action (in the pink cap!) challenging.

Q&A with St. Williams New Principal! St William’s Primary School Grovely has welcomed their new Principal, Roycelyn Wilden to their school. With over 30 years experience in the Education sector we recently caught up with Roycelyn to ask her a few questions. Are you a Brisbane Local? P&C Superstars at Ferny Hills State School The Ferny Hills State School P&C Association had a busy year of fundraising in 2018.
Through various events, including the hugely popular Trivia Night, Bunnings BBQs, a Read-a-thon and Pie Drive they successfully raised funds to complete the installation of air conditioning in every classroom and purchase STEM resources for the school. The 2018 fundraising program also saw a team of superstar grant writing parents who secured in excess of $5000 in funding for school resources. These grants were used to purchase a Tenor Saxophone for the music program, updated
equipment for the tuckshop and literacy resources for the school. The energetic work of volunteer parents is a fundamental part of our school community and their efforts to enhance the learning experience for our students is greatly appreciated. Indoor & Patio Plant Tips from The Mitchelton & Districts Garden Club
On Thursday, 4th April, Ann Blundell will be the guest speaker at the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club which meets at the Enoggera Memorial Hall situated at the junction of Trundell and Wardell Streets. Ann will talk about Indoor and Patio Plants.
All types of plants were once outdoor plants, but now certain plants are referred to as indoor plants, because of their tolerance of certain temperatures and light conditions. For instance, the dark green leafed Rubber Plant or Ficus which comes from deep jungle conditions, does not need a lot of light, but plants with variegated leaves such as the Sansavera (Mother in law’s tongue), Maranta or Calanthea, require a fair amount of light. You’ll find some indoor plants in pots have a dormant period in the colder months. They will look tired and faded, but a spell outdoors in a shaded sheltered position until the cold weather subsides will restore their lustre. Many different plants grow well on the patio – flowering annuals, bromeliads, dwarf palms, ferns, even herbs and veggies. The guest speaker will give more information about this. Of course, whatever plants you have or wherever they are, all of them need maintenance and nourishment. Also these plants benefit our well being by purifying the air. This month garden beds need revitalizing with plenty of organic material and preplanting fertilizers, so that they are ready for winter vegetable and spring annual seedlings in April. March is the time to plant strawberry runners too. Plan to plant vegetables and flowering annuals in the same garden beds as this will confuse garden pests. This club meets on the first Thursday of the calendar month, except January. Meetings commence after morning tea which is served at 9.45 a.m. Visitors and new members are most welcome. There are vacancies for new members. The hall is close to public transport and accessible by wheel chair. For more information please phone the president, Pat, on 3356 1256. www.hillsecho.com

Teams almost finalised for Arana Netball Club
Following online registrations, club sign-on day, and trials over two weeks at the end of February, Arana Netball selectors and committee have been working on organising teams for this year’s competition. Teams are now virtually finalised, and happily the club has more teams than last year. For anyone still wanting to play netball this year, it may not be too late to join a team with Arana, as in some age groups more players can still be accommodated to make up to nine players per team where possible. To find out if there is the opportunity to play in the age group you are interested in, you should contact the club immediately, as any spaces may fill very quickly: email the club at arananetballclub@gmail. com or phone 0404 132 007. To be eligible to play, players need to be turning 7 from January to June this year and in grade 2, or older. Players up to 10 years play with modified rules as they learn the game better, and after that there are competitive age grades, followed with Cadets, and Intermediates, before Open divisions. Anyone over 19 years must play Open, while some younger players may also be put into Open teams as necessary. There is a Masters division this year as well, so that players over 35 who would like to play but no longer feel they are so competitive, have a section to join. This should be great for some mums who would like to play in a team. Arana Netball monthly meetings are on the third Monday of each month at the Hills District Community Centre meeting rooms, commencing at 7.30pm. Meetings are open for all connected with or interested in the running of the club, with senior players and members of new families especially welcomed to find out more about the club.

Rehearsals have begun for The Hills Players
The Hills Players are now into rehearsals for their first production for 2019.
The first production will consist of three, one act plays, two of which have been written by Brisbane writer, Hugh O’Brien. Hugh is currently working with The Hills Players as these plays are still ‘works in progress’ and they will be holding their World Premieres here in the Hills District. The plays are called ‘The Ineligible Bachelor’ and ‘The Pram’ by Hugh and ‘Sure FM’ by Michael Jeffery. ‘The Pram’ was inspired by an old family heirloom pram and the play moves from 1919, through the turbulent 60’s to the present. In post World War I, the pram holds the precious granddaughter of Bridget but in 1969 Gladys is looking after her little grandson who’s father went through the Vietnam war; until finally that same grandson and his sister find that Ancestry.com unlocks the mysteries of the past generations and the pram comes into its own again. ‘Sure FM’ is set in a Community Radio station where there is a power struggle going on for a favoured time slot, while ‘The Ineligible Bachelor’ takes a behind the scenes look at the current ‘reality’ TV shows. These plays will be staged at 7.30pm on the 3rd, 4th, 10th & 11th May at St Matthew’s Church Hall, Church Road, Mitchelton.
PROJECT NOTICE!
New playing fields will be constructed at the Samford Parklands soccer facility, including fencing, LED lighting, irrigation, water storage, pathways, landscaping, drainage works and carparking. 2022 Smoke Alarm Countdown
Deadline for QLD Smoke Alarm Compliance. It’s closer than you think!!
Every rental property in Queensland must meet the new smoke alarm rules by 31st December 2021. For more information about what will make your investment property compliant contact our office on 07 3164 7000.
Is your tenant in arrears?
A good property manager will ensure all tenants sign a rental arrears procedure form at the beginning of their lease and that they understand their rental payment obligation. Should your tenant fall into arrears, action can only be taken against a tenant when they are 7 days behind. Best practice is that they contact the tenant prior to this time and advise them of the rent payment being overdue. On the 8th day of arrears a breach notice can be served to the tenant, under legislation the tenant is then given 7 days to remedy and pay the rent owing. If no payment has been received after the 7 days you can then take further action and issue a notice to leave. It is crucial that your property manager is on-top of rental arrears. If this is something you are struggling with give us a call on 07 3164 7000

Easy ways to spread love in your community
Giving back to your local community is a great way to share the love, no matter the time of year. Life becomes frenetically busy at the best of times and it’s easy to forget to connect with the people around you. Here are some easy ways to give back to the area you live in. Donate Blood: Every blood donation can save three lives. Volunteer at a shelter: Whether it’s a homeless shelter or an animal shelter, helping out around the community doesn’t need to be a holiday-only thing. Support your local OP shop: One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. If you find your home becoming cluttered with items you have no use for donate them to your local Salvos or Vinnies. Spend time at your local senior centre: Not everyone is fortunate enough to have others still around. Something as simple as sitting down with an elderly person and getting to know them can make their day.

COUNSELLOR’S COLUMN with Robin Botic
Dear Robin, Over three years ago I left a relationship that I’d been in for some 22 years. I had been unhappy with the relationship for some years. The final straw occurred for me when I needed surgery and recovery time of two months after that. This episode showed me just how selfish my partner was and how little he cared for me. My illness was all about how it affected him, and how now he had to do everything on our horse property by himself. He was abusive to my daughter and son when they came to care for me. They should not have been cooking my meals or doing my washing etc, but helping him do his work outside. He has always had hair-trigger anger. I liken it to living with a lit fuse. In the past though it was directed towards others and only became directed at me in the later years when I wouldn’t fall in or work towards his designated goals. He has never been physically violent towards me, but his anger and hostility plus my final realisation of the depth of his selfishness was too much for me. This is by way of background. I am now engaged in on-going legal battles with him that are costing me financially and emotionally. He never gives up and seems to just want to find anything to get me in court to have a go at me or get more money off me. I put the money from my house, my savings into our property equally as he did. I gave up my high-earning job to support and work fulltime in his business venture. But when it became obvious that he was losing money I, plus his accountant, strongly counselled against further involvement. He ignored all our advice and continued on his sweet money-losing ways. I feel I have to stand up for my rights and not let him walk all over me, but I also just want peace, to get on with my life, and put him behind me. I‘m afraid that this will go on forever, and I don‘t understand why he has to keep harassing me like this. Joan
this was gained at the expense of you giving up your needs for his. Not a fair or balanced relationship. Your understanding of this has led you to stand up for yourself, culminating in your leaving the relationship. I’m sure this was no easy thing for you to do. It would have taken strength and courage. For three years you have stood up for your rights. What you have to balance is how much it’s going to cost you. You’ve proved you are not a walkover. What you have to work out for yourself with legal advice are the costs involved ( second opinions may be helpful). At this point I’ll offer some suggestions as to why your expartner is doing this, and hopefully this may be helpful for you in your decision-making process. This is about power and control. Your ex-partner needs to win. You’ve rejected him by leaving and this is one of the ways he is holding on to and controlling you. In effect, he is punishing you for that. It’s face-saving on his part, if he scores, wins against you, the rejection doesn’t feel so bad. In relationships that have ended where power and control issues dominate, this is a common pattern of behaviour afterwards. There is no easy or rational adult-like settlement, no matter how hard you try. Peace often comes at a price. Sort out if the cost is worth it. What can you afford emotionally and financially. Legal fees can gobble up a lot of your assets and you may well need those for your future. Robin

Roun Now O d 2 pen!
Moreton Bay Regional Council offers a variety of community grants for the region’s eligible individuals, sporting and community groups. Round two of grant application are now open. For more details visit www.moretonbay.qld.gov.au/grants
Dear Joan, There appears to be two questions that you’re concerned with: how do I stand up for yourself and not get walked over; and why is your ex-partner behaving like this. Now in terms of the first question I’ll ask you who are you trying to prove to that you are not a walk-over: yourself, him, friends, family? In this case, for your real peace of mind, you are the only one that counts. I stress while you may have acceded to his demands in the past, for love, acceptance, peace or whatever, you have in the last few years, realised that

TAX MATTERS From TaxArana
Granny Flat - Tax Implications
If you currently own a granny flat, or are looking at building one, do you know what the tax implications are? Did you know that while you may not require council approval to build a granny flat, you do need council approval to rent it out and different councils have different rules. The current Government has requested the Board of Taxation to undertake a review of the Capital Gains Tax (CGT) treatment of granny flat arrangements. Currently, a homeowner may have to pay CGT where there is a formal agreement for a family member to live in their home. If there is no formal agreement ... where does that leave you? What tax do you pay? The review is expected to start early this year with a final report due to the Government in the second half of 2019. TaxArana, is here to help. If you’d like more information about potential CGT and other tax implications for you and your family please get in touch. Likewise, if you own or are looking at buying a rental investment property, come and have a chat with us. Willmore Paints The Hills Teal February is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month and
Willmore Kindergarten and Preschool have been painting rocks teal to help create awareness within the local community about this deadly disease.
Each rock has the Ovarian Cancer Australia website on it so people can learn the signs and symptoms of the disease in order to help save lives. ‘The children have been hiding rocks in places where others may find them,’ explained Linda Meinicke, Willmore’s Director. ‘We hope we can spread awareness throughout the community and how important early detection is,’ said Mrs Meinicke. A few years ago, ovarian cancer directly affected Willmore’s community when one of their teachers, Linda Fox, was diagnosed with the cancer at 49 years of age. Every day, four Australian women, are diagnosed with ovarian cancer and of these women 75% won't be diagnosed until their cancer is at an advanced stage. The oldest tram in the Brisbane Tramway museum’s fleet is 47, built in 1901. A total of 62 trams of this class were built in Brisbane using imported electrical components such as motors, controllers etc. Known locally as the ‘Matchbox’ series, it was known internationally as the ‘Californian Combination Car’ due to similarity of design to the San Francisco Cable Cars. One feature of these trams was the oil lamp installed inside the cabin. This lamp shone a light through a coloured disc at the leading end of the carriage to indicate which route that tram was taking so that passengers could identify the right tram at night—different colours were used for each route. 47 had the dubious honour of running on the shortest tram route in Australia—from Queen Street to the City Botanical Gardens along Edward Street. Big news from the museum this month is the forthcoming commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the last tram trip in Brisbane. The museum will operate from 1pm until 8pm on Saturday 13th April, the exact date of the last trip in 1969. There will be at least six trams running from 47 through to 554, the tram that actually made that last trip. Apart from the tram rides, there will be static displays of the Tramway’s own trolley buses, vintage tow truck and overhead line vehicle as well as vintage cars, trucks and motor cycles and historic Brisbane City Council buses will run local tours during those hours. There will be a number of attractions for the kids and food and drinks will be available during the afternoon and evening. Fares will be $14 for adults, $11 concession, $7 for children and family passes for $42. More details will be presented in the April edition of The Hills The number 47 tram at Brisbane Echo. If you weren’t familiar with the Trefoil Guild, the Guild is for girls and ladies who have made a promise at some point in their lives and are often ex-girl guide leaders or cub scout leaders who want to continue with the fun and friendship they have enjoyed as Guides or leaders. Our local Guild, the Mildred Bliss Grovely Guild, meet once a month at the Ferny Hills Guide Hut on a Saturday afternoon and it usually involves food and chatter! They often raise money to help guides with their projects, or work on projects of their own. Their latest project in the works is a Doll Display and Competition on Saturday 13th April from 1pm. They are hoping to encourage some of the young Girl Guides, their parents and friends to come along and see their collection of dolls. A few of the ladies will have very old dolls on display (from 50 to 100 years old in some cases) which they have treasured for many years. The Doll Display and Competition will be a fund raising afternoon and at the same time maybe interest some of those parents and friends in joining us in their Guild. ‘These days, the parents are so busy with their families, work and other commitments, there is not much time to just sit and have a chat, remember those happy childhood days with dolls and tea parties. We are hoping to do both on this afternoon,’ said Mildred Bliss Grovely Guild member Margie Reid. More information regarding the event can be found below:
The Doll Display Competition Details
• Location: The Guide Hut, Baden Lane off Samford Road, Ferny Hills • Date & Time: Saturday 13th April at 1pm • Admission Fee: $5 Bring your favourite doll or just come along and vote for your favourite one. Place a coin in her money box and see who wins! Lucky Door prizes, Raffle and Afternoon Tea. Enter your doll for just $2. www.hillsecho.com
Specialist knowledge boosts ability to alleviate chronic pain
Pine Rivers Private Hospital is increasingly investing in an emerging medical specialty to tackle the debilitating effects of chronic pain.
QPain’s Dr Michelle O’Brien, who has consulted at the hospital for the past year, is one of only around 250 pain specialists across the country, and supports a multidisciplinary approach to help patients better manage their pain. ‘As a relatively small and newish specialty, a lot of patients and sometimes even general practitioners and other specialists have not heard of a pain specialist,’ she said. ‘It’s actually a misleading title because we are of course ‘antipain’. We’re about trying to help patients manage their pain more effectively, and a real need for this type of service in the north of Brisbane has been identified.’ Chronic pain is believed to affect up to 30 per cent of the population and it is associated with contributing to significant costs to the community and high levels of mood disorders such as anxiety and depression. Despite such prevalence, Dr O'Brien said chronic pain remained poorly understood as medical conditions. ‘As pain is a purely subjective experience, it is complex and difficult to define,’ she said. ‘Each of our patients will define their pain uniquely and that will be based on the context of their pain, life experiences, beliefs and expectations. ‘What is certain is the devastating impact chronic pain can have on one’s life, with mental health issues often tightly intertwined with the condition. ‘For example, advocacy group Pain Australia has found one in five Australian adults with severe or very severe pain also suffer depression or other mood disorders, while physical
www.hillsecho.com
health problems have been implicated in more than 20 per cent of suicides. ‘Caring for such patients can be incredibly challenging but is also very rewarding.’ Dr O’Brien who started her career as an anaesthetist, and trained further as a pain specialist, said “Drugs alone are not a realistic approach. Likewise, psychological approaches or physical therapies or interventions alone are unlikely to deliver best results. A combination of management strategies is more likely to result in improvement. Allied health (psychology, physiotherapy, occupational therapy) involvement is often pivotal, and referral to other medical specialists such as psychiatrists may be needed. ‘When it comes to chronic pain, it can be a slow-ish process to assess improvements and our patients are often encouraged to track and record their progress to allow more accurate reflection of their clinical course. ‘Chronic pain is undoubtedly a condition that robs people of lots of things but it is also rewarding when we can help patients improve their function and improve their lives.’ Dr O’Brien, who studied medicine at the University of Queensland, commenced training in pain management at the Professor Tess Cramond Multidisciplinary Pain Centre (Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital) and St Vincent’s Private Hospital. A Close Shave for Samford Chef
It’s going to be a very close shave for Tracey Burrett, sous chef at the Samford Hotel. She will have her head completely shaved on Saturday, March 16th in the public bar of the hotel.
Her new bald look will be done in aid of the Leukemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave fundraiser. Tracey says she is excited about the prospect of raising money Tracey Burrett will give up for the charity in Samford. her lovely locks for charity. ‘Samford has a vibrant and generous community and the support I have received so far has been awesome. I’m really looking forward to seeing people come along and support me in this year’s World’s Greatest Shave fundraiser,’ said Tracey. Like many of us, Tracey’s life has been touched by cancer with family and friends who have died or are suffering from the ravages of this disease. And this is not the first time that Tracey has sacrificed her hair for this fundraiser. Twelve years ago, in the mining town of Alyangula on Groote Eylandt, she went the full chop and raised over $6000. ‘For me it’s a simple thing to do and gives me a chance to do something positive. My hair will grow back and if the funds we raise together can help save lives, then it will be so worthwhile,’said Tracey. The fun starts at 3pm on the 16th March at the Samford Hotel, with raffles, a sausage sizzle and a chance to take part in cutting Tracey’s hair. You can also donate via the link on Tracey’s Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/tracey.burrett

Community Sport Infrastructure Grants Program
From tennis to cricket, soccer to hockey, the Ryan electorate has a very active sporting community. I am therefore delighted to announce that Bardon Latrobe Football Club has received funding for new unisex change facilities. The Community Sport Infrastructure Grants Program invests in small to medium scale projects with the goal of improving existing sport facilities and supporting grassroots sport. The Coalition Government understands that our success and prowess as a sporting nation begins with grassroots sports which is why $30 million was invested in Round Two of the Program. With more than 2,000 applications, it is obvious that community level sport is thriving. I congratulate Bardon Latrobe Football Club and their dedicated team of hard working volunteers.
We want to ensure Brisbane remains one of the best cities in which to live, work and raise a family.
Thank you
As this may be one of my last monthly columns for The Hills Echo I would like to take the time to thank all of the readers and constituents for their ongoing support during the past nine years. It has truly been a privilege to serve you as your Federal Member, and I remain committed to the betterment of our community.

Dickson News
from your Federal Member for Dickson PETER DUTTON
Delivering Infrastructure for our Community
I’ve been working hard to secure the Infrastructure solutions our community needs. This has involved a huge amount of work and joining with thousands of local residents to run campaigns and build support from the ground up. Thank you to everyone who has joined me in fighting for these important upgrades. Some of the things I’ve been able to deliver funding for thanks to our combined efforts include: • More car parking at Ferny Grove Station • Upgrading Linkfield Road Overpass • The Missing On/Off Ramps at Dohles Rocks Road • Flood proofing Youngs Crossing • Upgrading the Draper Bridge • Eliminating Mobile Black Spots in the Samford - Dayboro Region These are just a few of the things we have been able to achieve by working together. However, there is still a lot to be done and I am working hard to get the results our community needs.
350 New Car Parks at Ferny Grove Station
I am pleased to let you know that I have delivered $11 million in funding for 350 new car parks at Ferny Grove train station. Prime Minister Scott Morrison visited Dickson on 30 January to announce the funding as part of broader measures to bust congestion in our local area. It is great news for everyone in Samford using Ferny Grove as our local train station.
These car parks should have been built by the State Government years ago and I am pleased to help deliver the extra parking we need to accommodate future growth in the area. This was only possible because of the overwhelming support my campaign for more car parking received from members of the community. Thank you to everyone who signed my petition and joined my campaign.

All resources are free and I hope that you drop by to pick up yours soon.

The Ferny Report
Ferny Grove TOD Update
The Ferny Grove Transit Oriented Development (TOD) plan is currently awaiting final approval from Brisbane City Council (BCC). Several accommodations have been made which reflected community concerns such as cancelling the plan to add extra parking decks on the existing finger car park. The current plan still includes the maximum number of car spaces available on site as part of the development. A decision is not expected from the BCC before next month at the earliest and I urge council to consider the pressing needs of our community and give their approval for the build to commence. Increased parking at the Ferny Grove Railway Station has always been a major issue in our community. On taking office in 2015 I discovered construction of a TOD for Ferny Grove had been approved by the previous government – but without any additional car spaces. This was something I knew our community would not accept and so I fought hard to have the project re-assessed. In the 2017 budget the Palaszczuk Government funded hundreds of extra car spaces for the TOD through an allocation of $9 million. Not only will the TOD provide the parking relief we all recognise is needed at the station it will also provide hundreds of extra local jobs. Construction jobs will be created during the build as well as permanent service and retail jobs once the project is completed. The money the Palaszczuk Government has invested in this project will deliver the jobs and services our community desperately needs to prosper and grow. Honeycombes Property Group will be running a further consultation and information session this month. At the time of writing the date of the consultation has not been finalised

Ferny Grove High School Update
The Centre of Excellence construction is underway at Ferny Grove High. I caught up with Executive Principal John Schuh recently to learn more about how the new centre will be used and to inspect the construction site. Mr Schuh told me the new centre will help deliver cuttingedge educational opportunities, while catering for the differing learning needs of students. It will also give the school the much-needed capacity boost to accommodate the continued growth in enrolments which are expected in 2020.
Catching up with John Schuh and Zane from Wiley Construction.
