Swimming Shield Makes a Splash
Congratulations to the Electric Eels Swimming Club for taking out the 2020 Bronte Barratt Shield at the Samford Pool last month.
The Eels have broken Samford's five year winning streak with a well deserved win. Bronte Barratt, three time Olympian, medalist and ex-Samford Stingray made an appearance and has again inspired the next generation of swimmers. Despite weather forecasts, Samford Swim Club once again put on a day full of fun and friendly competition and a great family atmosphere. The Bronte Barratt Shield has been described as 'the best swimming carnival in the calendar year' on the northside of Brisbane. Four records were broken on the day; • Tex Higginbotham (The Gap) – Boys 9 Years 25m Freestyle • Jordi McHugh (Eels) – Girls 10 Years 50m Freestyle • Clint McHugh (Eels) – Boys 9 Years 25m Breaststroke • Zion-Lazarus Laulu (Eels) – Boys 15 Years 50m Butterfly The Samford Swim Club would like to take this opportunity to thank the people all the volunteers and sponsors of this event as Carnivals like these would not be possible without their support. A special thanks goes to Joep Buijs Photography which took the stunning front cover image on this issue (and many others on the day!), along with Samford Swim Club’s long term supporters Belle Property Samford and TerryWhite Chemmart Samford.

Trivia Night to take the Spotlight
The Hills Players are back in to the swing of things and have kicked off 2020 (their 40th year) with a flurry of activity. The first order of business was their Annual General Meeting, which saw a reshuffle of roles to keep things interesting. They are also mixing things up by making their Annual Trivia Night the first event of the year on the 4th April, 2020. It’s guaranteed to be an enjoyable night with the entertaining Andrew McMicking returning to host the event for another year. Why not grab a group of friends or feel free to come along alone; The Hills Players will find you some trivia buddies for the night. Attendance was at capacity last year so be sure to get in early to book your spot. The event will be held at St Matthews Church Hall, Church Road, Mitchelton. You can either phone 3355 7319 or email hillsplayers@gmail.com to make your reservation. The other big news for this community theatre group is the announcement of their next play. ‘Always a Bridesmaid’ by Jesse Jones, Nicholas Hope and Jamie Wooten Pat Cook, is arranged through MTI Australasia. Not only will the play be fun to watch, but it will also be a whole lot of fun to perform, and The Hills Players can’t wait! Performances of the play are scheduled for 12th, 13th June, 19th and 20th June. Further updates and information will be included in future editions of The Hills Echo. Rehearsals for ‘Always a Bridesmaid’ will take place every Monday and Wednesday and monthly meetings at St Matthews Church Hall will still be taking place on the 1st Monday of every month. If you’d like to be involved, please feel free to pop along.

A Local Club with an Admirable Vision
Arana Netball welcomed new and returning members to the 2020 season with a Sign On day on 2nd February. Friendly as ever, the committee on hand was excited to meet players and families.
Arana Netball's committee is made up of members of their community, coaches, players, umpires and parents. The committee is passionate about creating a welcoming, family inclusive club that provides their players, coaches and umpires with development pathway opportunities. Over the past 12 months, they have seen some exciting changes, all of which are driven by their member feedback and dedicated committee. In 2019, Arana Netball Club Inc. secured a Moreton Bay Regional Council Community Organisation Development grant which provided their club with the opportunity to work with CPR Group and create their Strategic Plan for 2019-2022. The club sought feedback from their members to enable well rounded input into the club’s vision for the next three years. As a result, the club has introduced an all-inclusive communication channel, encouraged and supported coach development and much more. How Wahminda Was
News and Stories from the Samford Museum
Mr and Mrs Alfred Maile’s house
In 2010, at age 85, Doug Maile recalls memories of the vicinity in which Wahminda Cycle Link and Samford Rail Trail existed.
My grandparents’ house, where my father grew up, was set on a flat area above the creek- Kedron Brook. It had a simple farmer’s cottage style and was set on low stumps with a verandah across the front overlooking the creek and lower paddocks. Dad used to stand on the verandah and watch kangaroos play and spar on the flats. There is a modern home there now. Dad later owned a block of land near where ‘The Woolshed’ was. When I visited my grandparents we used to listen at night to the old-time cars grinding up the range and sing ‘She’ll be Coming Round the Mountain When She Comes’. Another pastime was walking on the nearby railway bridge. When Grandfather was working in the creek paddocks Grandma used to ring a cowbell to fetch him for meals. Grandfather Alfred William (Bill) Maile passed away in 1933. Milkman Harvey of Newmarket bought the property. For enquiries regarding the museum contact Geoff 0417 610 983 or email info@samfordmuseum.com.au

An accountant like no other....
Rana Jewell - Public Accountant & Registered Tax Agent • Friendly, safe environment • Questions are welcome and encouraged • 20+ Years Experience “It's the way you answer those questions that makes you special. No jargon and you don't make us feel stupid, plus you allow us to sleep soundly at night knowing everything is taken care of” Client testimonial
We were overwhelmed by the response from the Hills Community, as we sold out of tickets for the event within a week. Additionally, over 150 community members attended and dug deep to aid the bushfire victims. Thank you to trivia night guru Andrew McMicking, who travelled from his home in northern New South Wales and donated his time to run this brilliant night. Many local businesses, State Member Mark Furner, along with his staff, Moreton Bay Councilor Matt Constance and Tangalooma Island Resort, supported the event with donations, lucky door and raffle prizes. Over $3,300 was raised that will be used to purchase 22,000 litre poly water tanks that will be fully installed and filled with drinking water. In November, we sent $3,000 of drinking water to Clifton on the Darling Downs, a town that had run out of water for the essentials. Following that, in December we sent $3,000 to the Lions Bushfire Appeal and Lions Clubs International Foundation forming part of the $500,000 already donated to communities to provide the essentials to bushfire victims in towns across Australia. We love our Hills community, they are giving, generous people. They support their Local Lions Clubs because they know that every dollar we raise goes directly to the cause – without any loss to administration fees. Of course, we always need more volunteers to keep our programs going - people who have some time to give back to their community. If you have some spare time please contact me, Paul Ryan – GVK Lions cottontrees@ bigpond.com or 0409 688 675. The trivia night was a huge success

Rigourous Restoration Rolls On at The Tramway Monthly news from the Brisbane Tramway Museum and the Ferny Grove Men’s Shed
In most museums, restoration plays a major role in their activities and it’s the same at Brisbane Tramway Museum. Not only do the team restore their exhibits but they also have to restore equipment, much of which is unique to tram maintenance, an ongoing function. Currently, the Brisbane Tramway volunteers are overhauling their metal guillotine, various lawn mowers, weed-eaters and other tools. The big job, however, is restoring their 80 year old tow truck – the Scammel. This vehicle was the focus of the Tramway’s article in the Dec. 2019 edition of The Hills Echo. The Scammel was built in Britain in 1939 as a vehicle to tow big guns and tanks for World War 2 and their Scammel saw duty in North Africa in that conflict. It was bought by the Brisbane City Council in 1945 and was passed to the museum
when trams ceased running in Brisbane in 1969. It is estimated that restoration will take about 12 months (at 1½ days per week) to finish. Much of the original timber floor is being replaced; rust is being removed from body work, cabin etc; new sheet metal will be installed to replace badly effected areas; the electrics will be replaced with new cable but original fittings will remain. Finally, the truck will be completely repainted in its colours from the 1960’s. This restoration is in the hands of just a couple of dedicated members— Ian Brandt and John Lever. They occasionally are assisted by other members when extra hands are needed, but they do all the dirty work. Ian and John spend hours cutting and shaping timber for the floors and cupboards, angle-grinding rust and preparing metal surfaces for repainting and so on. Other members such as Neil Cameron have helped with electrical work and Jim Silk is a whiz at manufacturing parts which are no longer available. Several other members including John Osbaldiston can be called upon if needed. The Brisbane Tramway Museum is proudly supported by the Brisbane Brisbane Tramway volunteers, Ian Brandt and City Council. John Lever who are restoring the Scammel

You can find these forms on the schools website www.fernygroveshs.eq.edu.au under the Enrolments tab. Ferny's Twilight Expo is taking place on Wednesday 27th May. Group enrolment sessions are held for parents/guardians and students. Each one will be explained in detail, highlighting what information the school requires from parents. There will be a discussion of the Responsible Behaviour Plan, Mobile Phone Policy, Uniform Expectations and ICT requirements. Parents/Caregivers are welcome to book individual interviews with a Deputy if you feel you or your child would benefit from this. Students with specific learning, social or emotional needs should have individual interviews. For those Year 6 students interested in applying for Excellence Programs for 2021, there

Are sleepless nights taking their toll on you?
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common form of sleep disorder affecting over 1.8 million Australians. It is the partial or complete blockage of a person’s airways whilst they are sleeping, which triggers the brain to wake up in order to gasp for air.
Although people may not be consciously aware that this is happening, these events can occur more than 50 times per hour! Daytime symptoms of obstructive sleep apnoea include; early morning headaches, tiredness, poor concentration and irritability, whilst night time symptoms consist of; pauses in breathing, loud snoring, choking or gasping for air and frequent bathroom visits. Sleep is an essential aspect of our health and well being. Lack

of sleep can potentially lead to weight gain, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and poor mental health. With this in mind, the team at TerryWhite Chemmart Samford are taking bookings for sleep studies that are carried out in the comfort of your own home. So, if you think you or a loved one may have sleep apnea, you can now book in for an over-night sleep study. Studies are non-invasive, convenient, and can be performed in the comfort of your own home. The study results arrive back in the pharmacy within two weeks, where one of their sleep consultants will discuss your results and treatment options with you. The most common treatment for OSA is continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines, which involves the delivery of air through the airways in order to help them stay open, thus preventing collapse whilst sleeping. In order to ensure that settling into therapy is as comfortable as possible, TerryWhite Chemmart are offering a four-week machine trial. Throughout this period, weekly appointments allow the team to ensure your mask is fitting correctly and you are being treated effectively. The friendly team at TerryWhite Chemmart Samford are here to guide you through your journey of improving your sleep health and overall quality of life. For more information, call 3289 1559.

2022 Smoke Alarm Countdown
Deadline for QLD Smoke Alarm Compliance. It’s closer than you think!!

Need to relocate? Should you sell or rent your current home?
Moving away from a home you have become attached to can be an emotional minefield and in many cases people decide that rather than selling they would like to keep their property as a rental. Is this the best financial move? Here are a few questions to ask yourself.
What are the capital growth prospect?
Feelings aside, the best reason to hold onto a property is for the hope of long-term capital growth, which will vary greatly depending on the desirability of the area and the individual characteristics of the property.
What will your cash flow be like?
A detailed budget may help you in your decision making process. Ask yourself how much money you will be left with after subtracting mortgage payments plus any payments to make on a new home or rental. Don’t forget to account for other costs that can come up with an investment property, such as insurance, maintenance and operating costs.
Is the property suitable for rent?
What happens after you apply for a rental?
Depending on which real estate agent is managing the property you’ve applied for, processing times can take between 24-72hrs for approval. If this happens, the agent will contact you and start the lease agreement process. Why does application approval take so long? It might seem like a long time, but there are multiple checks taking place. These include but not limited to: Checking tenancy default databases, double checking that you’ve fully completed your application, assessing whether you can afford the property (based on your annual income and the asking rent), verifying current and previous living arrangements, verifying your employment status and checking references. Once these checks have taken place, an agent will submit all details to the owner. The final decision of who is successful and not successful is always the landlords decision. Once approved, the process will move fairly quickly. If you have an questions about rentals give us a call.
Just as you would likely do up your home ready to sell, you will need to get your home into shape to turn it into a rental. Turning a property into a rental can require a bit of work sometimes because you’ll need to ensure that it is safe and all maintenance work has been done. It’s not always an easy answer in these scenarios. If you would like to discuss your options and what is happening with property in your area phone the office on 3164 7000. p: 073164 7000

Beyond the Bricks Campaign
Australia’s real estate industry is united in support of our bushfire affected communities. Beyond the Bricks is not a “set and forget” campaign. It comprises a three-phase plan: relief, rebuild, re-store. This will provide not only assistance during crisis, but also to the communities most affected in the aftermath beyond this point. The initial funds will predominantly be directed to the following four preferred national charities - St Vincent de Paul, The Salvation Army, the Australian Red Cross and World Wide Fund for Nature Australia. Since launching, the campaign has raised a total of $1,072,616. Over the coming months the campaign will enter its next phase, where we look at rebuilding these communities. Tailgaters and Rock hounds, what you need to know at a Gem Show News from The Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club
If you are in a situation where you are unable to travel for field trips there is an alternative for you. This is in the form of Gem Shows which are held during the year by various Gem/Lapidary Clubs.
Gem shows are a mix of commercial dealers who sell machinery, tools etc and individual rock hounds wishing to sell their surplus gemstone material and items which they have cut and polished. The individual rock hounds are what is known as ‘tailgaters’. These people sell their excess rocks and made items to the public. They may only attend one or two shows a year in their area, just to dispose of excess items they have accumulated over the years. The commercial dealers generally operate inside a hall. Attending Club Gem Shows is one way of obtaining materials from tailgaters which may no longer be available on the market or, no longer be accessible on the field. Sometimes there may be up to eighty or ninety tailgaters at a Gem Show selling their wares! Some of the clubs holding Gem Shows are Redcliffe, Caboolture, Bribie Island and Caloundra at various times of the year. Our club does not hold an annual Gem Show because of lack of suitable sites in our area. If you feel as though this type of hobby interests you, come along and inspect the workshop where members of the club cut and polish the rocks they find on field trips. The Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club has its rooms located at 46 Ferneydell Street, Ashgrove and is open every Thursday from 9am to noon for cutting and polishing rocks and from 12 noon to 3pm for silverwork. It is also open on Saturday from 1pm to 4pm. The club caters for rock enthusiasts in the North Western area of Brisbane. Visitors and new members are most welcome. For more information about the club, please phone John on 3351 1038 or Lloyd on 3351 2093.

TAX MATTERS from TaxArana, 2 Glenlee St, Arana Hills
So how does your garden grow? With all the recent rain in the Hills District, it’s easy to see how a garden can get out of hand so quickly! The basic principles of managing your tax and managing a garden are quite similar. • Consistent attention required: Do you have a set time each week to dedicate to financial admin? Or could your admin skills be more described as a mad scramble at the end of each financial year? Paying consistent attention to your tax prep across the year means that you will know where you are at with finances. This also means that you can make informed decisions about whether any EOFY sale purchases really would be of benefit to your bottom line. • Be vigilant about pests / scams: You could work consistently on your garden, but if you are not vigilant about pests sneaking in, it could be ruined. It's the same with tax scammers and you. You need to stay on top of what the latest scams are and understand the conditions in which they can sneak into your life. • The right tools + knowledge is key: Armed with quality tools and information, and a little effort, your garden could become bountiful! Like tax, there are some tools that will help you keep on top of your preparation. And yes - there’s an app for that! The ATO has developed a FREE app you can download to your phone and keep record of expenses as they are incurred, and incoming revenue as it’s received. • If you're time poor; you can OUTSOURCE ! As much as you may love gardening, there are some things you just may not want to do, or simply can’t. So, you outsource and spend more time doing the things you love. Much the same as outsourcing your tax to Tax Arana. Whether it’s individual tax returns, small business or company tax, Tax Arana can help.

COUNSELLOR’S COLUMN with Robin Botic
‘Procrastination is the needless and irrational delay of a task and this delaying behaviour is accompanied by self judgemental affective components of guilt, anxiety and shame’. We know we need to act now, but we don’t because of what is going on in our heads and how that makes us feel. My area of focus right now is to do with the thoughts that involve our competency to do a task. There are two different aspects involved in competency and procrastination. In one, we are more than competent to do the job, but anxiety that we will not perform well inhibits our actions (performance anxiety). In the other, we can easily do the task but we can’t get motivated or engage with it because it’s too boring or we don’t value it enough to want to get it done when we should (task disengagement). Becoming aware of how you think about a task and why, will help determine which strategy will be the most useful. Relationships Counselling In the first case scenario, the procrastinating behaviour is • Individual tied to our self esteem or lack there of. There is a need for • Couple perfectionism. The thoughts that sabotage your efforts are full • E.F.T Practitioners of self doubt, you judge your efforts as potentially not good • Stress Management enough in your eyes or the eyes of others. One piece of self talk that B.A. Dip Ed, B.Lit.Psych, Adv.Dip. Relationship Counselling Relationships Australia I have personally found very useful comes from John Grindler of N.L.P. (Neuro Linguistic Programming) fame. During the course work with him, he would come up to us when we were stuck with a bit of performance anxiety, look us in the eye and say – ‘Don’t think about it, just do it’. Take a breath and say that and keep saying that till you do it. This statement also works very well for the boring task list. The type of irrational thoughts that we use to rationalize delaying behaviour are ones like ‘I don’t feel like doing it now’, ‘I will feel more like doing it tomorrow’, ‘I will have more time tomorrow, next week, next month etc’. It is the train of thought that stops you from acting. So don’t think about it, just do it. Another strategy that again works for both areas is one that I came across on a retreat with Eckhart Tolle (The Power of Now). It is a very simple and very effective self talk in this fashion; ‘I will just start and I will just do it for fifteen minutes and see how I go’. What invariably happens is that a task that seems too overwhelming, boring or you were fearful about, starts to lose that edge as soon as you have become engaged with it for those fifteen minutes. To have become engaged you have to have become present with the task and to have engaged yourself in The Power of Now. You are thinking about the task you are now and have emptied No time to get that doing your head of sabotaging service or repair done on your self doubt, fear, boredom, sy Courte BUSINESS, COMMERCIAL or FLEET VEHICLE? unimportance etc. vehicle Robin. !

Everton electorate and across Australia. Welcome! Thank you to our Qld Fire Fighters I want to thank the hundreds of fire fighters who risked their lives fighting fires around the country during the bushfire crisis. They are our ‘heroes’ and I cannot praise and thank them enough. In the wake of these incredible tragedies, the Liberal National Party of Queensland have announced a 10-point-plan to overhaul Qld’s bushfire strategy. The LNP will do whatever it takes to keep communities safe. LNP 10-point-plan for bushfires 1. Deemed approval after 15 days under a ‘right to burn’ model 3. New KPS’s to achieve 98 percent of hazard reduction activities – only 54% of hazard burn reductions were completed by the current Labor Government 4. Indigenous Rangers to undertake traditional burning 5. Establish a Natural Disaster Cabinet Committee to monitor preparations 6. Monitored grazing in state forests and some national parks to manage fuel loads – grazing will be monitored to protect the environment but also manage fuel loads 7. Dickson News from your Federal Member for Dickson PETER DUTTON
A Message from Peter
Best of luck to all the students back at school for the year, whether you’re starting Prep or heading into Year 12, I wish you all the best for the year ahead and encourage you to make the most of opportunities that come your way. It is an exciting time for our local area. We have just had the official sod-turning at the Samford Community Hub and the new university at Petrie will be officially opened in the next few days. Seeing these projects become a reality will be a great reward for all the planning, preparation and hard work from so many in our community. It is very exciting. I’d like to say a very special thank you to all the members of the Rural Fire Service in our community who gave up time over December and January to travel down south and fight the bushfires. We appreciate you and all that you do. Thank you. I am here to serve and assist you, if there is anything I can do to help, please let me know. - Peter
Making the Hills District Even Better
Recently I worked with local Councillor for Division 10 Matt Constance on delivering the All-Abilities Playground at Leslie Patrick Park in Arana Hills. The jointly funded park has been open for several months now and the feedback has been fantastic. I’d like to work with you and our other local representatives on more projects to make our community even better – what would you like to see in our local area?

I’m working hard to keep our community and our country safe as Minister for Home Affairs. Our border protection policies are working and we are maker our community safer by cancelling the visas of foreign criminals. Since December 2014, we’ve cancelled the visas of more than 5,000 foreign criminals. This includes cancelling visas of 1170 thugs convicted of grievous bodily harm, 452 convicted paedophiles and child sex offenders, 852 drug dealers and drug traffickers, 714 thieves and armed robbers, 220 rapists and sex offenders, 93 murders and 547 other violent criminals. Our community will be far safer without these foreign criminals in our country.
Heroes of Dickson
I am interviewing locals who have done amazing things for our community with my ‘Heroes of Dickson’ video series. You can catch up with all the previous heroes I’ve interviewed by heading to the videos section on my Facebook page at www. facebook.com/peterduttonmp If there’s someone you would like to nominate as a hero of Dickson, please get in touch, my contact details are below.
What’s important to you?
I want to know what’s important to you. I’m working hard to make our community even better but I can’t do it on my own. I need your help to make sure we get the priorities right for our community. With your help, and by working together, I know we can get the upgrades, facilities and opportunities our community needs to be even better. Please get in touch with me at peter.dutton.mp@aph.gov.au or 3205 9977 to let me know your priorities. Or you can drop in to my next mobile office.

The Ferny Report Mark Furner M.P.
State Member for Ferny Grove
Yes, all men The brutal killing of Hannah Clarke and her three children in Camp Hill last month has brought into sharp focus the uncomfortable truth that for all our progress as a society, domestic violence remains a horrifying and persistent reality. On 28 February 2015 the Palaszczuk Government received the Not Now, Not Ever report authored by Dame Quentin Bryce. Since that day we have, as a state government, strengthened legislative, police and judicial responses, enhanced services available and allocated funding of over $300 million. This is still not enough. The most important change which is needed is a shift in attitudes and behaviours. Last year 61 women were violently killed by their partners or ex partners in Australia – often while attempting to leave those relationships. At the time of writing, another nine women have been killed. Some people have offered excuses or possible motivations for this violence. Some public commentary has even suggested that trying to put an end to violence against women condemns all men as violent. This is not true. What is true is the simple fact that 95% of all the violent deaths in this country are committed by men. So, while not all men are violent it is impossible to deny the overwhelming majority of violent deaths in Australia are committed by men. It is time for we as men to stand up and speak out; to accept there are no excuses; and to say, ‘We will not tolerate violence against women anymore’. Yes, all men.

Ferny Grove State High School needs your help The $12 million upgrade to Ferny Grove State High School’s performing arts and sports complex is now in doubt due to the refusal of Brisbane City Council to even allow access to the site. The project is fully funded and is ready to go along with new lighting for the oval which will be the new home for Arana Touch Football. At the time of writing the entire project is on hold. Please show your support to the school by signing the petition to allow the new complex to be built at: www.bit. ly/2uOWUsi.
