Samford Arts Trail puts the spotlight on local art

Local art is a prominent feature once again in this year’s Samford and Surrounds Arts Trails, to be held in and around Samford during the first four weekends in June.

Thirty five artists are participating in the trail, with their studios open from 10am to 4pm daily over these four weekends. Visitors will be treated to a wide variety of arts and interesting places to visit, in the beautiful Samford District and surrounds. Featured artists and artisans include painters, sculptors, jewellers, felt makers and textile artists, ceramicists, furniture makers and even a body artist. Artists will open their studios, so visitors can learn about their making process, view and purchase the art. This year, studios are open from Highvale, through the Samford Valley, Yugar to Warner, Cedar Creek and Dayboro. Once again, there are a great range of workshops available as part of the Arts Trail, with artists sharing their knowledge and experience in painting, sculpture, ceramics, encaustic painting and textile art. The workshops are outlined in the booklet which will be available at libraries, information centres and a variety of retail outlets. For the first time this year, the arts trails will be working with MBRIT and Mountain Wine Tours to offer a ‘wine and art’ bus tour. This will be a great day out experiencing the great things our area has to offer with wine tasting, food experiences along with experiencing a great variety of local art. To book the tour, head to the Creative Samford website at www.creativesamford.com The Arts Trail is organised by Creative Samford Inc., who are always looking for new creative members. ‘The Arts Trail has been hugely popular in recent years, with many visitors returning to not only enjoy the great art, but also the vistas, parks, cafes and restaurants which the district has to offer,’ said Ann Russell, Arts Trail Coordinator. For further information visit www.creativesamford.com or contact coordinator Ann Russell at trails19@creativesamford.com ‘Salmond Brewing’ by local Camp Mountain artist John Salmond is just one of the beautiful artworks available to view on the Arts Trail

Family fun at the Hills Carnivale

Hills Carnivale is back for another bumper year of live music, kids’ activities and workshops, rides, markets and food stalls at George Willmore Park, Ferny Hills on Saturday, 25 May.

The family-friendly event wraps up the month-long celebrations held as part of Hills Festival, drawing big crowds to the Hills District. Now in its 27th year, Hills Carnivale returns with all the favourites as well as some breakout musical talent and popular stage shows. Running from noon through to 7pm, the free event includes a whole host of activities for little kids through to the big kids (and adults!). Quench your hunger with some delicious food options from the Food Trucks, and explore the market stalls to pick up something handmade or homegrown. A spectacular entertainment program will be performed by some well-known local acts and children entertainers, including the high-energy Mackenzie Band and Let’s Bollywood Dance, Nickleby the Magician and Bahja Dance Music. Pony rides and a guinea pig petting zoo? Yes please! Kids will be able to lose themselves in the fun and excitement of Hills Carnivale within the dedicated ‘Kids Zone’. Here, they can enjoy a range of free activities including pony rides, cuddly guinea pigs, face painting, and a kids’ play centre.

All the fun for all the family

Don’t forget to visit the animal farm, where children can make some new furry and feathered friends. Get up close and personal with adorable alpacas, friendly sheep, goats, chickens, ducklings and piglets. Not only are there a range of free activities, but also a Kids Stage where children can get in on the action, singing and dancing along with the performers. The Hills Carnivale will finish with a bang, culminating in a spectacular firework display that will light up the night sky at 7pm. Division 10 Councillor Matt Constance said he wants to ensure this awesome event continues to grow in its reach, appeal and attendance numbers. ‘Last year we were nearly rained out but even that didn’t stop the crowd enjoying one of the best fireworks events you’ll see outside of Riverfire,’ said Cr Constance. ‘It’s a testament to the pride locals feel that we had so many community groups and organisations involved providing activities and supporting this amazing event.’ F o r m o r e information about Hills Carnivale and to see the full Hills Festival program of events, visit: www. hillsfestival.com. au. News From The Den By the Golden Valley Keperra Lions

Hello again, last month we held Lions Information Stalls at Arana Plaza and Great Western Keperra shopping centres – you may have seen us there.

We want to spread the word, gain new members, however it always amazes me that many in our community don’t know what Lions Clubs and their members do. One major project running since 1963 is the Queensland and Northern New South Wales Medical Research Foundation more commonly known as LMRF. The Foundation supports early career medical scientists with funding. Some of the fields of research include cancer therapies, Parkinson disease, kidney disease, Asthma, Immunology, Diabetes, Corneal Transplant and with our latest researcher Dr Olivia Holland specializing in Maternal, Child health and gestational diabetes. HOW CAN YOU HELP! Buy a ticket in our current Art Union to Win a VESPA GTS 300 motor scooter. Vespa is the original scooter. Email me for your tickets - Paul Ryan, GVK Lions cottontrees@bigpond.com. Crowds Descend On Brisbane Tramway

Saturday 13th April marked one of the biggest events in the Brisbane Tramway Museum’s history – an estimated crowd of 800 people helped commemorate the 50th Anniversary of The Last Tram Trip in Brisbane.

The last tram to run in Brisbane completed its trip at midnight on 13th April 1969. Tram 554 had the honour of making that historic trip. Earlier in the day the Last Drop Centre Tram 341 was ceremoniously piped on its last trip into Ipswich Road Depot. Unfortunately, it was not able to carry passengers on this day. The museum sincerely thanks the Brisbane City Council for their support of this historic event. Apart from funding support, the Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner officially opened proceedings and Councillor for The Gap Ward, Steve Toomey, had the honour of driving 341 into the depot.

A comprehensive guide to educational facilities within The Hills Districts and Surrounds.

The basis for a lifelong love of learning

What will a parent see when walking through Mitchelton Pre-Schooling Centre’s (MPC) gate? As one prospective parent recently said, ‘I was particularly impressed by the emphasis on nature-based play and inquiry learning, the child-centred practices that I observed staff engaged in and by the facilities at MPC.’ On entering through the gate, our beautiful trees and natural materials clearly indicate our focus on the natural environment, however our greatest strength lies within. It’s our commitment to collaboratively create relationships and a learning environment which encompasses the child’s voice in leading the play along with the guiding hand of experienced teachers and educators. Play is the cornerstone of learning for young children and it is while playing that children can be ‘a head taller’, trying out something they may be unsure about. For a child who may not feel confident drawing, adding the food to the coffee shop menu becomes a meaningful reason to have a go at drawing food. Through interactions, teachers and educators encourage, support and challenge children to step out of their comfort zone while providing a safe base to which to return. When children play, they build their social skills; learning to listen and negotiate; experience real life with all its ups and downs builds resilience and self-regulation;

investigate, discover and wonder; think creatively and flexibly, adjusting to change and solving problems; develop language skills; understand fairness and a sense of empathy; gain self-confidence and executive function skills; and learn about trust and respect.

Learn more about Herbs from The Mitchelton & Districts Garden Club

Debbie Aitcheson is the guest speaker at the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club when it meets on 2nd June at the Enoggera Memorial Hall. She will talk about herbs. Debbie is from The Chilli Patch at Minden where she and her husband grow potted culinary herbs, salad greens and chillies to make a living. As well, they package over a hundred varieties of spices, such as ground ginger. From the time history has been recorded, and even before that, herbs have played an important role in the well-being of mankind because they provide food, health needs, medicinal remedies, heating, dyes and fibres, etc. Their strong flavours reduce the need for the use of big amounts of salt and sugar in our diet, and most of the world's population relies on herbs to keep healthy. The main varieties of herbs are perennials and they are easily grown in pots which may be kept close to the kitchen for quick and easy access. It is far better to use freshly picked herbs than dried ones. Herbs grown in a garden with other plants, deter insects and attract bees and butterflies. Apart from mint which prefers damp conditions, herbs like a rich well drained potting medium. Are you aware that all herb flowers are edible? These days they are very popular to use as garnishes. Debbie has been guest speaker at this garden club in past years. She usually has potted herbs to sell and a surprise for the audience, such as sample gifts of spices or seeds or a cooking demonstration using herbs with a tasty sample being available. The rain received in March and April has revived the lawn and

plants in the garden. Citrus trees are blossoming and the citrus leaf miner is attacking the young leaves. Any affected leaves should be pruned off and discarded in a plastic bag in the garbage bin. Azaleas should be coming into bud to flower in spring. If these buds are turning brown or drop, suspect petal blight fungus which may be controlled with a fungicide. Geraniums should be pruned this month. Let the cuttings dry out for a day or two, then use them for propagation to ensure you do not lose any variety. This club meets on the first Thursday of the calendar month except January. Morning tea is served at 9.45 a.m. and visitors and new members are most welcome. The hall, in Trundle Street, Enoggera, is close to public transport and accessible by wheel chair. For more information please phone Pat, the president, on 3356 1256.

This Affects YOU! Single Touch Payroll

By Rana Jewell: A payroll revolution has already started for employers with 19+ employees – this means that if you work for one of these larger organisations who is reporting your pay and super information by real-time single touch payroll (STP) software, your employer no longer has an obligation to issue you with an annual Payment Summary (aka group certificate). You will be able to see your year-to-date reported wage, tax and super information in your myGov account. After financial year-end this information will be in pre-fill reports that your tax agent can access or in your myTax record. But if you don’t use a tax agent or want to avoid setting up a MyGov account you can request a copy of your payment summary (or income statement) by phoning the tax office on 13 28 61 (or 13 28 66), option 3, option 2 – they will ask your full name, date of birth, and tax file number plus three random security questions, unless you already have voice identification setup. For employers with 19 or less employees, this major change commences on 1 July 2019 and they need to start STP reporting by 30 September 2019 latest, unless they’ve applied and been granted a later start date. Exemptions are available for employers experiencing hardship or with intermittent or no internet connection. Despite vigorous lobbying to numerous politicians by us and other Tax professionals there are no exclusions for micro businesses (1-4 employees) unless you can demonstrate extenuating circumstances. Except if you already use cloudbased STP compliant payroll software, there will be extra costs: new software (ato.gov.au/STPsolutions), extra training, additional Tax or BAS agent fees to do the training and/or reporting on your behalf. If your company or trust only has yourself and other family members (ie closely-held payees) as employees, your deferred STP reporting start date is 1 July 2020 and you can apply to do STP reporting at the same time as your quarterly activity statement – these can be estimates which are then finalised by the due date of the entity’s income tax return. All other employees must be reported through STP by 30 September 2019 unless you have a granted deferred start date. If you have 1-4 employees and have limited digital capability, you may be eligible to report quarterly until June 2021 through your registered tax or BAS agent.

COUNSELLOR’S COLUMN with Robin Botic

Dear Robin

I would like some direction on this. My wife gets right up me when I watch adult porn films and such on my computer. She goes on and on about there has to be something wrong in my head to do it. She does not like me “ogling” other women like this. The biggest battles we have around this are over our son and daughter. Vickie says I am setting a lousy example to both of them if they ever see what I am so engrossed in and that my time would be better spent in more family time with them. In my defence I am very careful about when I watch this stuff. Our kids are only young and I make sure that they are not around to see it. I am not doing anything wrong, it is legal, and I enjoy it. So what’s the harm? I just think Vickie is jealous and for me that is her issue not mine. I love her, find her very attractive and have never cheated on her. So I don’t see that I should stop doing something I enjoy just because she does not like it. Am I wrong to want to do this?

Nathan

Dear Nathan, My, you have opened up a Pandora’s box with this one. Anything to do with our sexuality, its expression and how we model behaviour in this regard is potentially inflammatory. This is not about who is right and who is wrong. Ideas about what is appropriate sexually changes from culture to culture and also over time. This has been very evident in our culture in our life time. The difficulty that you and Vickie are faced with, is that your views are very different on the place and use of porn Those views arise out of your different familial and societial conditioning. What you have to understand and deal with between you is what assumptions, beliefs, fears etc. your current views are based on. How relevant or reactionary are they? There would be no problem if there was no difference in your views. Living with difference is about finding a workable compromise through mutual understanding and respect. Fantasizing is a very important expression. It is human and the use of porn can be a part of that for many people. This has been so over the centuries. Erotic art is a part of many cultures. Each culture sets the bounds of what is legal or not, and we are free to find expression within those boundaries. Different things appeal to different people and no more so between the sexes. What turns men on is and has always been different to what does it for women. Many of us women don’t get that. Our man fantasizing about other women can

THE WORK WELL

be very threatening. But if we are honest, we all do it in our own way. However while it is in our head it is hidden, on the screen it can’t be ignored nor the fears it can bring up. It is a taboo ridden area with continuously conflicting social mores and double standards. It is no wonder that we have so many different views on the subject and the difficulties this creates in relationships. What is important is to understand the drivers in your own individual expression or repression of your sexuality. What and why you find certain things threatening/confrontational is a difficult but necessary topic for you both to explore as honestly and as judgement free as you can. There is plenty of helpful literature on the subject available. As to the other important issue that you bring up re Vickie’s concerns as to the potential effect on your children, the issues here being 1) what are you modelling, 2) what will your children think about the info on those sites, 3) perhaps more importantly what they will think about the person who is using them. If Vickie and your concern is truly about your children gaining access to inappropriate sex sites, then I suggest (as the police do) that the computer is kept and used in a family space that is available to and viewable by all. Where you, as parents can monitor what they can google. The earlier this is started in a child’s life the more used they are to the idea and there will be less struggle to keep it out of the “privacy” of their own personal space ie bedrooms. Today what children can get access to and the harm it can do is a very real concern. Insisting on these procedures to me is responsible parenting practice. As to the question of what will your children think of the example of what you are modelling; well what do you think, you would think, if you were them at their age? My question to you is, is this what you want them assuming about you or about sexual attitudes. If it is not, how are you going to go about creating the attitudes and beliefs that you value in this area.? How our children see themselves, are comfortable in their sexuality and are respectful of others has a great deal to do with what we as parents model. What do you as parents want for them and how you go about achieving that is a very important issue that needs to be sorted out. Be aware that what you don’t say can be as important as what you do say. It is something that you both need to be on the same page about. Robin.

TAX MATTERS From TaxArana

Warmth Matters

With the weather getting cooler, you are probably getting your winter blankets out of the cupboards so you can get toasty warm at night; or at least thinking of doing so.

Imagine not having any blankets, jumpers, jackets or warm pants and having to spend the nights outside, in the cold, damp air. Sadly, there are many people in this exact situation throughout Brisbane. 3rd Space is an organisation that helps homeless and displaced people in Brisbane by offering food, clothing and bedding. If you have any spare blankets or winter clothing (for men and women) you can bring them to the TaxArana office, which is an official drop off location for 3rd Space. Have a look through your cupboards and see what you can spare. Instead of throwing them in an overflowing charity bin, please bring your donations to the TaxArana office; as these are taken, by me, directly to 3rd Space. It will warm your heart knowing you have offered warmth where it really matters - to those in need. For more information about 3rd Space, visit www.3rdspace. org.au where you can also make financial (tax deductable) donations. Regards, Steve TaxArana, 2 Glenlee St, Arana Hills (Corner of Glenlee St and Dawson Pde)

Advertorial

The real third choice – Liberal Democrats Local small business owner, Lloyd

Russell, is a Senate candidate for the Liberal Democrats in the upcoming federal election. Lloyd and his family have been in The Hills Districts for almost 25 years after they moved here from Charleville in South West Queensland. Lloyd is a specialist family business adviser with a passion for family and private business of all sizes. Over the past ten years Lloyd has seen how the trend of increasing red, blue and green tape has stifled business resulting in reduced employment opportunities across the board. More importantly, Lloyd has seen this trend adversely affect the younger generation’s employment Lloyd Russell - Senate opportunities. candidate for the Liberal The Liberal Democrats, established in Democrats 2001, is the only true Libertarian political party that is focused on reducing the imposition of government in our personal, family, community and business lives. The Liberal Democrats are a principled based political party with a suite of economic and social policies that enable the individual to be ambitious, innovative, responsible and accountable for their own actions. Along with his running mate, Gabriel Buckley, the Liberal Democrats platform is three fold – 1) Taxation reform to put more money in your pocket, 2) Ending the energy crisis by truly focussing on all alternative energy sources, 3) Ending the Nanny State of the two major political party coalitions to give you more freedom. Lloyd states, ‘Over the past 12 years this political duopoly has only achieved division and dependence in Australia while continually increasing the tax people pay from their hard earned incomes.’ Other areas Lloyd has identified as failures with our current high taxing, high administrative and low delivery governments include: 1. Extreme waste at the federal level within Health and Education that does not allow for delivery of these services. Take education for example – Australia now spends more per student that Finland YET our education delivery and output is well behind. This is a clear indication of over administration and under delivery 2. Overcrowding and congestion in South East Queensland due to poor strategic thinking in relation to infrastructure and regional development. It is the regional economy that drives Queensland and Australia YET neither of the two major duopolies have a regional strategy that will drive future economic prosperity 3. Across Queensland the expansion of invasive/noxious vegetation species is an ecological disaster. While it is argued the management of these “Weeds of National Significance”, of which there are 32, is the responsibility of local government the Liberal Democrats know this is just state and federal governments passing the buck. It is a national issue that is located predominantly on state owned and operated land. Time for the federal government to step up on this issue. 4. Social issues like the ability to own and carry concealed non-lethal self-protection, voluntary suicide and the legalisation of cannabis are top priorities for the Liberal Democrats. On Sunday 28th April, the Liberal Democrats, along with other political parties and interest groups are holding a major Legalise It Rally at the Brisbane Speakers Corner commencing at 12noon. For more information about the principles and policies of the Liberal Democrats go to www.ldp.org.au

At the end of April we were saddened by the passing of our life member, Olive Barlow who lived in the Enoggera area for most of her ninety-plus years. Along with her dedication to the Guide movement, Olive was an active member of EDHS almost since its inception. Great changes occurred during Olive's lifetime and she kept abreast with all of them. A meticulous record keeper she was the personification of an era past without ever losing sight of the present. May began for us with an appearance at BCC Marchant Ward's annual Lanham Park fair on May 4. We have attended this event for almost as long as it was first introduced in the early 2000s and regard it as an enjoyable event not to be missed. Dickson News

from your Federal Member for Dickson PETER DUTTON

A message from Peter

This election you will be faced with a decision about the future of our country. Scott Morrison has a plan to manage the economy well so we can continue funding health and education at record levels and deliver tax cuts to help families and small businesses. Bill Shorten is proposing $387 billion of new taxes in addition to an economy wide carbon tax which will drive up cost of living expenses including prices of electricity and petrol. Locally, Kirilly and I have raised our children in Camp Mountain and have lived in the Dickson electorate for a very long time. This is a great place to live, work and raise a family. But our area is growing rapidly, and we need to invest in roads, car parks and other local infrastructure to cater for the needs of local families. That’s why I have been fighting so hard to improve roads and transport links right across our region. Keeping the economy strong is the best way to secure your future. Creating jobs, reducing taxes, lowering your cost of living and increasing investment in hospitals and schools can only be done because of good economic management. The Morrison Government has been successful in protecting our borders and keeping us safe. As Minister for Home Affairs, I am honoured to have played a part in this.

I am proud of the many local initiatives I have achieved funding for in our area including: • Funding more car parking at Ferny Grove train station • Delivering a new all abilities playground at Leslie Patrick Park in Arana Hills • Extending and upgrading the PCYC at Arana Hills • Upgrading the Draper Bridge • Eliminating mobile black spots • Funding for the new Samford Community Hub These are just a few of the things I’ve achieved for our local community, see www.peterdutton.com.au/achievements for more. I need your support on 18 May so that we can continue working together to make our community and our country even better.

A New Headspace Facility

I am pleased to let you know I have secured $3.5M in federal funding for a new ‘Headspace’ facility in Strathpine to help support young people in our community. Headspace provides practical mental health assistance for young people including intervention for substance abuse and social and vocational support. I am so happy to have this funding. Youth mental health services are in such high demand and Headspace can literally save lives. The Strathpine site is one of 30 new sites announced around the country as part of the Morrison Government’s $461 million Youth and Indigenous Health and Suicide Prevention Plan – the largest investment of its kind in Australia’s history.

Drop in to my next Mobile Office

I am clocking up the kilometres in my mobile office caravan. I have now completed well over 2,000 visits in my mobile office and helped thousands of residents with local issues. Recently, I’ve helped locals who required assistance with aged care, Veterans Affairs matters and Centrelink issues. It is an incredible privilege to be able to help people and I would love to be able to help you if you are experiencing similar problems with these services. Next time you see me out and about in the Hills District or elsewhere in my caravan, please drop in. I would be happy to meet you and see how I can help.

Heroes of Dickson

I am interviewing locals who have done amazing things for our community with my ‘Heroes of Dickson’ video series. You can catch up with all the previous heroes I’ve interviewed by heading to the videos section on my Facebook page at www. facebook.com/peterduttonmp If there’s someone you would like to nominate as a hero of Dickson, please get in touch, my contact details are below.

Report a Local Issue

It is now easier than ever to report issues that need to be fixed in our local area. To let me know about a local issue, simply go to www.peterdutton.com.au/report and fill in the form.

Connect with Me

If there’s anything I can help with, please send me an email at peter.dutton.mp@aph.gov.au or call on 3205 9977. You can also pop into the office at Strathpine in person during business hours. GET SOCIAL WITH THE HILLS ECHO!

Honeyeater Park Installation

The new playground has been installed into Honeyeater Park, Upper Kedron, the bespoke timber play is themed to reflect the native honeyeater. I look forward to meeting with residents later this year to discuss the next play installation within the park. Thank you to all the community who came along to the previous consultation, I’m sure the new park will be well used and the area will become a social hub for the community.

Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner

On the 7th May 2019 we returned to Council Chambers for the last time before the commencement of the budget sessions. This was our last sitting before the Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner brings down the 2019/20 budget for Brisbane. I am proud to have been part of Graham Quirk’s team and I look forward to contributing to the new council team under a new Lord Mayor. An important part of my work as Councillor is budget submissions requested each year for work across the ward. Each month I meet with my council officers who look after our local assets, the planning and delivering of transport networks, safety improvements around schools, promotion of active travel, construction of intersection upgrades as well as new parks and funding for our habitat groups to support their

Cnr Steven Toomey with volunteers from the Brisbane Tramway museum and Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner work across Cedar, Fish and Enoggera Creeks. I look forward to delivering the 2019/20 budget for The Gap Ward and contributing to making this ward one of the best in Brisbane.

50th Anniversary Brisbane Tramway Museum

The Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner was present to officiate the 50th commemoration of the last Brisbane tram run at the Brisbane Tramway Museum. The Queensland Omnibus and Coach Association provided a restored Leyland Panther and this was the one of 204 original Leyland Panthers that replace the Brisbane Trams in 1969. Brisbane City Council is a strong supporter of the Tramway Museum and Cr Peter Matic as Chairman of Lifestyle has provided facility grants for the replacement of the tram shed’s roof to preserve Brisbane’s public transport history. Julian Simmonds was also on hand to inspect the array of trams, vintage motorcycles and the Leyland Panther. The commemoration was extremely successful with many a memory brought back to mind and a great opportunity for a younger generation to experience Brisbane’s public transport history.

The Ferny Report Mark Furner M.P.

State Member for Ferny Grove

Ferny Grove community groups share in over $100,000

Round 99 of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund has been announced with Ferny Grove Electorate groups awarded a total of $104,553 in one-off funding. Volunteer groups are the backbone of our community and the benefits of these grants to local organisations are invaluable. The Round 99 recipients included West Mitchie Rugby League and The Brisbane Tramway Museum among others. The Fund provides one-off grants of up to $35,000 for projects which would otherwise be very difficult for some groups to finance. Round 101 is open until 31 May for all registered not-for-profit groups in the Ferny Grove Electorate. For more information on applying for one of the grants please go to www.gamblingcommunityfund.qld.gov.au or contact my office at ferny.grove@parliament.qld.gov.au.

ANZAC Day 2019

This year I was able to get to many of the local school ANZAC Day ceremonies and was most impressed by the dedication and seriousness that our local students approached our day of national reflection. This year we looked back on the 100th anniversary of the return of the diggers from the front. Many of the people who returned were deeply affected by their experiences – and many did not return at all.

Flu shots

The 100th anniversary of the returning soldiers is also a timely reminder of what came back to Australia with them – the so

called Spanish Flu. From 1918 to 1920 the flu killed just as many people around the globe as the war had. Perhaps even more. Don’t take any chances. Get your flu shot at your local doctor or chemist. I got mine last month.
