Festival Fever Hits The Hills This May!
Experience the Hills District like never before with an expansive program of unique events and activities spanning the entire month of May as part of the Hills Festival.
Moreton Bay Region Industry & Tourism (MBRIT) in partnership with the Moreton Bay Regional Council and local community stakeholders, have captured the vibrancy and diversity of the Hills District in a monthlong program of events and family-friendly entertainment. ‘May is set to be a fun-filled month for locals and visitors alike who’ll be spoilt for choice with activities and attractions around the Hills District,’ said MBRIT CEO Shane Newcombe. ‘The festival is best known for its family-favourite Hills Carnivale which will be back bigger and better than ever on Saturday, 26 May at George Wilmore Park from noon, with an exciting program,’ Division 10 Councillor Matt Constance said. There will be $2 rides, two stages of entertainment, free workshops, delicious food stalls and an explosive fireworks finale. The Carnivale always proves to be a fun and cost-effective afternoon for the family. The popular Hills District and Bunya Garden Competition, Mother’s Day Picnic in the Park and Movie in the Park have also made their way onto the Hills Festival program this year, as well as a host of events and workshops being hosted at the Arana Hills Library. Another addition to the festival is the Mother’s Day Picnic in the Park at George Willmore Park. Bring along a blanket or folding chair for an afternoon of free live music and food trucks. Thirsty for knowledge? Well you’re in luck this May with stacks of free events and workshops being hosted at the Arana Hills Library. ‘From tips and tricks from gardening gurus, career councillors to finance experts, there’s something for everyone at the Arana Hills Library during May,’ said Cr Constance. If that’s not enough excitement, there’s also a Movie in the Park on the 5th May at Leslie Patrick Park, Everton Hills where the colourful, family-friendly film ‘Trolls’ will be screened under the stars. Make sure you keep an eye out for the festival mini-mag that will be distributed throughout the community. Read All About It at Kolora Collection!
Tanya Haynes with Father, Rob Hurman at Kolora Collection
There is a new Street Library on the block! Kolora Collection is located at 63 Kolora Crescent, Ferny Hills and is the brain child of Tanya Haynes.
After living in Ferny Hills for 14 years, Tanya has loved the neighbourhood and community spirit that exudes within the Hills District. It’s in this spirit that they decided to join the Street Library movement. Over the past few months Tanya has been working on this project primarily with her father Rob Hurman who had the
construction skill set to build the street library which is constructed from almost entirely recycled materials. Other family members have also chipped in and helped out. So what is a Street Library? Street Libraries are a window into the mind of a community; books come and go; no-one needs to check them in or out. People can simply reach in and take what interests them; when they are done, they can return them to the Street Library network, or pass them on to friends. If anyone has a book or two that they think others would enjoy, they can just pop it into any Street Library they happen to be walking past. Kolora Collection is now fully up and running so why not drop by and have a browse, create a conversation. Street Libraries are a fantastic way for neighbours to get to know each other, and for adults and children to enjoy a great book. Other local street libraries in the area are: The Book Hive - 35 Hillenvale Avenure, Arana Hills Everton Hills Library - 23 Bennetts Road, Everton Hills Willmore Kindergarten & Preschool - Irruka St, Ferny Hills. A Gift For All Mothers
The month of May could be a great opportunity for everyone to encourage those very dear to us, our Mums, to book an appointment to have a breast screen. Of course there are those who already have a breast screen and we congratulate them all for being proactive in ensuring they are up to date with their breast health. However there are still large numbers of women who do not have regular breast screens and as a family member or friend, we need to help them make a decision that could save their life. BreastScreen Queensland Brisbane Northside Service Director Dr Jane Brazier said having access to our Keperra service was very beneficial for those women who lived in and around the Hills District. ‘We know people get busy or just forget to go, but we also know having a breast screen every two years is something every woman should do for herself, her family and for peace of mind,’ she said. ‘Breast cancer is still the most common cancer diagnosed among women and over 75 per cent of women who develop breast cancer are over the age of 50.’ All women aged between 50 and 74 years are strongly encouraged to have a breast screen every two years however women from the age of 40 are also eligible to attend. The whole procedure takes less than 30 minutes, a GP referral is not required and it is free. The BreastScreen Queensland Keperra Service is located in the North West Community Health Centre, 49 Corrigan Street, Keperra. Appointments can be made by phoning 13 20 50 or book online at www.breastscreen.qld.gov.au C

Autumn In The Garden
This is a beautiful time of the year to be in the garden. Swapping plants with fellow gardeners, helping neighbours and family, creating and adding a sense of value to our community.
The Hills District and Bunya Garden Competition is more than a competition, it is connecting like-minded people within our community. This can only serve to make it a nicer more secure and welcoming place to live when you have someone to say ‘Hi’ to at the local shops or when you walk past their front yard. Gardens can be a conversation starter, good for our mental and physical health, they can bring in beautiful native birds and provide us with a connection with the earth. It is a fantastic way for children and all to learn about the intricacies and wonders of nature. Why not pop down for the official launch of the ‘2018 Hills District & Bunya Garden Competition’ plus ‘Plant Swap’ on Saturday 19th May from 10am to 12pm at the Arana Hills Library on Cobbity Crescent. This year entrants receive a 50th Anniversary participation plaque. Come along and be inspired to prepare your garden for entry into the 50th year of this competition. You can ask questions about plants and gardening tips. Follow the garden competition on Facebook www.facebook. com/hdbgc or visit their website www.fhpa.org.au for further details. Dr Natalie Shockley, Emma White, Maria Sami and Vicki Essex.
After six years in Samford, experienced clinical psychologist Dr Natalie Shockley is embracing growth and moving Samford Psychology to a beautiful high set Queenslander a stone’s throw from the existing practice in mid-June. Originally practising in Capalaba for 10 years, Natalie was drawn to the quaint cottage in the Lifestyle Centre’s tranquil garden setting as, in her words, ‘it was an amazing place for her trauma clients to come to for therapy.’ Initially Natalie occupied one room, with a small waiting area; since 2012 the practice has grown to take over the whole cottage of 3 consulting rooms, with full-time practice manager Vicki Essex. Now further change approaches, cementing Samford Psychology as the area’s most established clinical psychology practice with the move to the larger premises ‘out the back.’ Quieter and more private, the new premises will have four consulting rooms, a spacious waiting area with a ‘kids space’, and group therapy room. The popular nursery, gift shop and café at the Lifestyle Centre, are only a few extra steps away. Samford Psychology is a vibrant practice, with a team selected for their compassion, trauma-awareness, excellent training, and range of experience, together meeting the needs of many clients. The practice has a sliding fee scale, and has established a great reputation within a local network of referring Doctors. The other experienced clinicians include Maria Sami, Emma White, and new recruit, Claudia Petherick, who are all excited by the upcoming move. A Connected Community at Mitchelton Pre-Schooling Centre
Mitchelton Pre-Schooling Centre (MPC) is a dedicated threeunit community kindergarten full of natural leafy spaces, a child responsive environment and great ideas. MPC has a long rich history of supporting families in the local community, responding to changing needs, adjusting and adapting structures and practices to meet those needs. Parents often comment about the positive impact of the wonderful teachers and educators, many of whom have committed a substantial part of their professional life to MPC. They create meaningful connections with children and families building MPC’s sense of history, community and belonging. They establish environments which foster children’s
engagement, interactions, exploration, wonder, play and a strong connection with the natural world to build skills, dispositions and knowledge for children’s lifelong living and learning. Listening and play are highly valued. Play provides insights into children’s interests, skills, beliefs, joys, what makes them laugh, their anxieties and frustrations, how they learn, their intentions, how they represent their ideas and what they think and feel. Two and three day kindy programs for children in their year prior to entering Prep are offered. These children attend with the same children each day and the same highly qualified, experienced and innovative teaching teams. Additionally, we offer a unique two day program for three year olds. MPC’s also offers a Before and After Kindy Care program (B&A Care) and their Saturday morning Playgroup extends our service to support the broader community with another opportunity for families to connect.

To Busk Or Not To Busk
There has been much debate over busking at Ferny Grove Shopping Village with local band Chesterfield playing on a regular basis in the evening. They write simple, catchy songs and both members Rhys North and Paddy McDermott of Upper Kedron play the guitar and sing harmonies. Chesterfield have loved playing at the Shopping Centre and the community spirit down there along with being able to play their songs to people who generally don’t have the opportunity to listen to buskers as they live so far from the city. They have found great support at Ferny Grove Shopping Village when they busk. In addition, many of the Shopkeepers at the centre have admired the talented duo and loved their acoustic indie/pop style of music which is very much influenced by the 60’s. Many of the shopskeepers and shoppers alike have stated that
the buskers have added a terrific atmosphere to the centre in the evening. This being the case, Centre Management has stated that they had received complaints about highly amplified rap music with derogatory lyrics which were causing offence. The Centre Management acted on these complaints and made the ruling of “No Busking” in the Centre, something which had always been their policy. Due to this ruling Chesterfield could not play in the centre. Centre Management have since received further approaches from shopkeepers and locals who missed the busking duo and expressed disappointment at their exclusion. You can listen to Chesterfields music here www. triplejunearthed.com/artist/chesterfield

Arana Netball
Arana Netball Makes a Strong Start to Fixtures
With the commencement of Downey Park netball fixtures on 21st April, Arana Netball Club’s teams have made a good start to the season.
Non-competitive teams, Arana 9 and Arana 10, while not playing for points as they learn the game, have started very enthusiastically, and Arana’s competitive teams have started off with wins by most teams. Well done to coaches and players for taking your teams to this point. Arana has ten teams entered in fixtures this year, two Opens, an Intermediate, two Cadets, a 13 year-old, a twelve year-old, and an11 year-old team, along with the two modified teams. While some teams have full numbers, there are still vacancies for players in some age groups, especially the young teams, players 8 to 10 years, born 2008, 2009, and 2010. If still interested in playing club netball this year, please contact Club President, Jenna, on 0404 132 007 or the Registrar, Janice, on 0407 625 399. The sooner late sign-ons make contact and register the fewer games they will miss. Throughout the season, teams may compete in various carnivals organised by associations. Local carnivals that Arana teams often compete in are the Downey Park Association, Pine Rivers, and Brisbane Netball Association (early August.) Players over 18 years also often round off the year’s netball by organising and entering their own teams in the Netball Australia’s Netfest carnival, this year at the Sunshine Coast over the first weekend in October. Thanks go to those who have already fulfilled their turn at the Arana Sports roster at the Arana Leagues Club. Teams have been allocated raffle dates through the season, and as this is the Club’s main regular extra fund-raiser, support from parents and senior players is very important. Special thanks
Arana 9, 10 year old team, on the first day of fixtures. and acknowledgement also go to the businesses that supported Arana Netball Club with donations for the Mothers’ Day raffle, to families who supported this by buying and selling the tickets, and to our Club fund-raiser co-ordinator, Lisa, for her organisation. Arana Netball Club meetings are held monthly, on the third Monday, in the Arana Sports meeting room at the Hills District Community Hall, Dawson Parade, commencing at 7.30pm. The next meeting is scheduled for 21st May, with meetings open for all interested to attend – parents, senior players, and ideally every team will have a representative at each meeting during the season. For any further information about Arana Netball Club see the web page www.arananetballclub.com.au or follow the Club on Facebook – Arana Netball Club Inc. When you feel as though you belong, you are ready to learn
Nestled amongst tall leafy trees with beautiful natural outdoor spaces, Willmore Kindergarten is set apart by how the space feels when you first enter the gate. You feel like you belong. You become a part of the Willmore family.
Willmore Kindergarten was established 48 years ago by the Ferny Hills community who wanted a place for their children to grow and learn. Today, as a result of the hard work and commitment of parent committees, staff and a supportive community, the kindergarten continues to thrive. Willmore offers a pre-Prep program where children are believed to be strong, capable and competent. When children feel safe and secure and connected to others, they thrive. Children have the same highly qualified, experienced and innovative teaching team and they interact with the same group of children each day. This closeness establishes the best possible foundation for the children’s learning. Willmore’s teaching team are passionate about advocating for young children and researching alongside them to learn and discover the extraordinary in the ordinary. Our Director Linda Meinicke has been at Willmore for 8 years and her Co Educator Linda Fox, has been at the centre for 15 years. Our additional teacher, Nikki Jones, has been working with Willmore for three years. We invite you to call 07 3351 2022 and book a tour so you can see for yourself.

WOMEN in Business Working women are no longer a rarity and are now accepted as an integral part of the workforce.
Australian women are increasingly becoming business operators, perhaps to improve their families’ social and economic wellbeing, remain attached to the labour force or better manage their work-life balance. Just over a third of Australia’s business operators are women (34%) and their numbers are rising. At universities, in workplaces, in boardrooms and in government, a growing number of women have taken on leadership roles, forging pathways for other women and girls to follow. We are celebrating sixteen incredible local women who have taken a leap of faith and are making a name for themselves in small business. Read on to discover more about these business ladies within our community.
Fast Facts
Mums in business represent one-sixth of all small businesses and provide income for over half a million Australians. The number of women business owners increased 5.6 per cent in the past 12 months. Over 600,000 Australian women operate their own small business. Average age of women starting their own business is between 35 and 44.

Emma Vasudevan Shannon Lester Managing Directors Queensland Cheer Elite
Starting out as friends, Emma Vasudevan and Shannon Lester soon became team mates, and have since turned their hobby of cheerleading into a thriving business, Queensland Cheer Elite. Both ladies were students at the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, studying Engineering (Emma) and Human Resources (Shannon). Both had previously participated in dance and gymnastics lessons, before being convinced to try cheerleading on campus by a mutual friend. After a few years as athletes, they both decided to test their hand at coaching, and before long, they discovered a passion for cheerleading and working with young people in the community. Leaving behind their corporate jobs, Emma and Shannon signed a commercial lease for their first cheerleading facility at Geebung in 2011. However the (07) 3350 3328 www.hillsecho.com
program has since doubled, and Queensland Cheer Elite now offers classes from a larger facility at Kedron, as well as a facility at Sumner Park. QLD Cheers’ teams have excelled with teams competing in national competitions in Melbourne and Sydney, as well as travelling to the USA annually to compete against the best-of-the-best cheer teams in the world. Emma and Shannon see themselves as very lucky to have the opportunity to mentor and build great relationships with the young people they coach everyday. With participation rates for girls in cheerleading growing nationally by 25% per year, why not give cheerleading a go? Contact Emma and Shannon today!

I have sold a variety of media and witnessed many exciting changes in marketing, with the emergence of modern technology and the birth of new communication channels. I believe that good marketing is grass roots, personal and affordable for a business. Most importantly it is engaging and targeted to a well defined audience, and it should have proven return on investment. I have worked in the private, public and not for profit sectors, I have been the client and the service provider. I have

managed up and down the command chain and I am 100% confident in my abilities to provide businesses with concise marketing information and services which will lead them on a path to growth success. My ‘goals kicked’ list includes strategic planning and development, stakeholder engagement and communications, national campaign management (digital and traditional), branding, website design and project management and national conference marketing. I have also co-authored funding proposals from both Federal Government and commercial partners. I believe a solid digital marketing plan and knowledgeable execution is essential for all businesses intending to conduct successful communications with customers to achieve growth. Sadly this month, we record the death of Lorraine Steele former resident of Arana Hills, who work tirelessly on the previous Hills District publication, The Advisor.
A comparatively new helper on the Adviser scene, Lorraine gave many hours of collation day table hand assistance of superior standard from December 1975, often bringing in her children on school holiday periods. At the same time, Lorraine was to the fore with school tuckshops, fete committees and was chairman of the Grovely School Fire re-instatement committee. After years of submitting bright
helpful ideas, Lorraine was invited to become a member of the Adviser Editorial Committee and served it well, undertaking any given task in a charitable manner during the years until 1988. As well as assisting with letterbox deliveries and annual collection of voluntary subscriptions, Lorraine Steele, table-hand 1975-1988, also gave 1744 hours of service in company with other volunteers printing, collating and preparation for distribution of the monthly Adviser newspaper issues. The Steele children also helped at the Bargo Street workshop, giving over 63 hours 19811987. Vale Lorraine Steele

Counsellor’s Column
Dear Brenda, You have provided an excellent description of the detrimental effects of poor parental models on our behaviour and therefore on our relationships. If Geoff is very defensive about his behaviour and is resistant to calm discussion about it, then you may be able to diplomatically use his concern for his son’s welfare as a circuitous way of getting him to look at himself. A discussion about what behaviours we value in our children, people in general, and how we can go about achieving this could also include the effect of models, good and bad. Make sure that if you use models you refer only to your own. Hopefully he may be able to see some of his stuff around this.

In the lead up to ANZAC Day 2018 schools across The Gap Ward hold their own special ANZAC Day ceremony. It was an honour to attend the services at Ferny Grove High School, Bardon State School and Hilder Road State School. The commemorative services were hosted by the school captains and I was impressed and moved by their readings and songs. It is reassuring towards the end of the ANZAC century that the Australian spirit is very much alive and understood by the students. On ANZAC Day I attended four services held at Ashgrove, The Gap and Bardon. Each of the services has its own unique style and were well attended. This year the Ashgrove State School and Marist Choirs sang at the Ashgrove RSL service at Stewart Place Ashgrove. On ANZAC Day we not only remember the young volunteer soldiers of Australia & New Zealand who fought at Gallipoli, but all those soldiers, sailors and airmen who have fought in subsequent wars and peacekeeping deployments.

ANZAC DAY SPECIAL
I had the honour of representing the Australian Government at this year’s Anzac Day commemorations in Turkey from 24-25 April. I represented Australia at a number of memorial services and delivered the commemorative address at the Anzac Day Dawn Service and the Australian Memorial Service at Lone Pine. It is so important to pay our respects and uphold the memory of the 48,000 Allied soldiers, including 8,700 Australians and 2,700 New Zealanders, and close to 87,000 troops of the Ottoman Empire that lost their lives at Gallipoli. The sacrifice of our diggers at Gallipoli helped make Australia
what it is today and more than 100 years on we rightly continue to honour them. It was a great privilege to join the many Australians and New Zealanders who made the journey to Gallipoli peninsula and I thank the Turkish Government for their continued support to commemorate this important day for Australia. Whilst I am sad that I could not be in Dickson this year to commemorate Anzac Day at the many local services like I normally do, I took the opportunity to pay tribute to a local soldier in my speech at the Gallipoli service. Below is an excerpt from my speech about a local soldier from Strathpine, Frank Zillman: “Born in Strathpine Queensland, Frank was a fencing contractor before he enlisted, aged just 18. He joined the Second Light Horse Regiment on Gallipoli as a reinforcement in October 1915. Frank was at ANZAC during the autumn storms and snow in late November, he was evacuated to hospital on 9 December and never returned to Gallipoli. But his war was far from over. Frank was one of the many Gallipoli veterans who went on to serve on the Western Front. Arriving in France in June 1916, Frank served with the 5th Divisional Ammunition Column, and a year later with the 13th Field Artillery Brigade. On 4 April 1918, only days after he had returned from leave, Frank was mortally wounded when his battery was shelled while marching in to Querrieu. He was just 21 years old.” You can watch the full official service at Gallipoli and see my full speech here: https://youtu.be/He678WN7g9E Lest We Forget.

Ryan News
from your Federal Member for Ryan: JANE PRENTICE
Jobs and Economy
The Coalition Government has a plan that is building a stronger economy by: creating more and better paid jobs; backing small business; boosting exports; delivering reliable and affordable electricity; and building vital infrastructure. Jobs growth in 2017 was the best year on record with more than 420,000 jobs created (on average, more than 1,000 jobs a day!). These record jobs growth figures demonstrate that the Coalition Government is delivering the right economic conditions to facilitate businesses, like those in Ryan, to create more jobs for more Australians.
Cheaper Medicine
The Coalition continues to work to improve the health of Australians. Since 2013 we have subsidised more than $8.2 billion worth of new medicines. New and expanded listings to treat a range of conditions including diabetes, arthritis, asthma, high blood pressure, depression, eye disease, ulcerative colitis, epilepsy and certain types of cancers are now available. From 1 May, we have also drastically reduced the cost of lifesaving immunotherapy medicines to treat certain cancers such as Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, which will save patients more than $200,000 over the course of treatment. These price reductions benefit patients when the total cost of the script drops below the maximum PBS payment of $39.50 with concessional patients paying just $6.40. For more information, visit www.pbs.gov.au
Flu Season
This year, the Coalition Government has provided two new,

free flu vaccines to give stronger protection for Australians aged 65 years and over. Flu vaccinations are available at most pharmacies across the electorate and are a vital way to ensure we stay healthy over the winter months. Make sure to book yours in today!
Fatality Free Friday
Fatality Free Friday is held on the last Friday in May every year to raise awareness of the dangers that occur on our roads. It is a national campaign to educate road users on the vital role individuals play in reducing the devastating impact of road crashes. Last year these crashes claimed the lives of more than 1200 Australians. Road users are encouraged to demonstrate their commitment to reducing the nation’s road toll by taking the pledge at www.fatalityfreefriday.com, and please – make every day of the year fatality free. GRANTS OPPORTUNITY
Does your not-for-profit organisation need funding for new equipment and upgrades to facilities? Round 97 of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund is now open for applications. In the electorate of Ferny Grove, community groups have been able to build new sheds, install solar panels, refurbish kitchens, purchase sporting equipment, replace high voltage transformers, purchase IT equipment and even purchase new vehicles. These grants are a big boost for not-for-profit groups who successfully apply. The fund is Queensland’s single largest grants program, distributing over $54 million annually to Queensland not-forprofit organisations. Grants of up to $35,000 are available. If you need information about eligibility and how to apply, please contact my office or visit http://www.justice.qld.gov. au/corporate/sponsorships-and-grants/grants/
367 BUS EXTENSION
Upper Kedron residents will have access to the 367 Bus Service within months. The Monday to Saturday services will ferry passengers to Ferny Grove Railway Station and the Great Western Shopping Centre. This is something I fought for last term and it is great to see this vital extension now becoming a reality. This is another example of my ongoing commitment to the community of Ferny Grove and Upper Kedron to make public transport more accessible for everyone.
Mark Furner MP at the Mitchelton State High School ANZAC Day ceremony with veterans Richard Male and Paul Bagnall.
The extension of the 367 route was funded by the Palaszczuk Government last year and is now expected to be implemented by June 25 by the Brisbane City Council and Translink. Connections between route 367 and rail services at Ferny Grove Station will also be improved to minimise wait times for passengers interchanging between bus and rail. This is the first delivery of a number of bus route upgrades I have been working on to make public transport more available to residents all over the electorate.
ANZAC DAY 2018
As we paused to remember the fallen for this year’s ANZAC day commemorations I was encouraged by the awareness possessed by school students at the various services in our local schools. It is important that the next generation is aware of the sacrifice of those who went before to allow us to live with the liberty we do today.
