Hills Carnivalé is fun and free fiestainspired Family Day Out
The annual Hills Carnivalé returns this May for its 25th year with a fiesta inspired program, combining free family entertainment, food and activities to celebrate the final event as part of the inaugural Hills Festival.
On Saturday, 27 May, one of the region’s most colourful events will draw families to George Wilmore Park, Ferny Hills, from 12pm to 7.30pm to enjoy a range of entertainment, activities and workshops. MBRIT CEO Mr Shane Newcombe is confident the Hills Carnivalé will be a success once again. ‘The Hills Festival will conclude with the biggest event on the program – the Hills Carnivale. And with two stages of entertainment there is guaranteed to be something for the whole family,’ says Mr Newcombe. Hills Carnivale features an extended and exciting new kids program that includes Balloon Sculpting, Games and Face Painting all of which are free to enjoy. Another great addition is the free Circus Workshops where kids can learn juggling, hula hooping, plate spinning, hacky sacks and more. All the favourites will be there – the Super Sizzler, Ferris Wheel, Two Up G Force, Rock Wall, Merry-Go-Round, and the Screamer Slide. Best of all, all rides are just $2 thanks to Big Show QLD. Food lovers will be able to delight their taste buds with food treats from all over the world at the multicultural food stalls complimented by the dozens of lifestyle markets to peruse. ‘This is a great family fun-filled event jam packed with exciting activities for all ages,’ Cr Constance said. ‘Make sure you come down early to celebrate Carnivale’s 25th Birthday and make sure you don’t miss the brilliant fireworks display from 7.30pm.’ For information on the Hills Carnivale and Hills Festival please visit www. hillsfestival.com.au The Hills Carnivale is proudly brought to you by Moreton Bay Region Industry & Tourism (MBRIT), and supported by Moreton Bay Regional Council.

Mitchelton Rotary Celebrates 50 Years
On 10th April 2017, the Rotary Club of Mitchelton celebrated its 50th birthday.
Mitchelton Rotary Club originated on 10th April 1967. The occasion was later marked by a Gala Dinner at Cloudland Ballroom in Bowen Hills on 5th June 1967. The Governor of Rotary District 260, David Munro presented the charter to Mitchelton President Col Kirkpatrick. The new club commenced with 25 Charter members. It met each Tuesday at numerous locations including the Brook Hotel, Keperra Country Golf Club and Gaythorne RSL Club. The club then moved to Arana Leagues Club where it is at the present time. An organisation comprised of volunteer members who gravitate in and out of all positions, can experience difficulty in ensuring that the records are correct in all particulars. Sadly this is true in the record of past Mitchelton Rotary members. Mitchelton Rotary is anxious to communicate with past members who have lost contact with the organisation to advise them of the upcoming Celebratory Dinner. If you are a past member of the club or if you are aware of any previous member, please advise them of the Celebratory Dinner which will take place in the Federation Room of the Arana Leagues Club on Tuesday 6th June. We hope that the occasion will enable our current members to enjoy the company of our former members and for both parties to perhaps renew friendships on this very special 50th birthday. We hope to present pictorial records that we all will enjoy throughout the evening. Last year we decided to support Umoja Orphanage/Home in Kenya. We conducted a Fund Raising Dinner which enabled the first of three residential buildings to be opened. The present Free Colour Consulting financial situation in Kenya requires that it be supported again Free quotes fast this year. We decided to combine our celebratory function with Only Premium paint used our 2017 fund raising dinner to support this most deserving Workmanship guarantee organisation. The Keynote Speaker will be Cathy Booth, Professional reliable service Best team of painters founder of Umoja. If you require further information or wish Residential & Commercial to pass on information concerning past members please phone 3855 5338. The next meeting of the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club at the Enoggera Memorial Hall, corner of Wardell and Trundle Streets, Enoggera, is on Thursday, 4th May.
Barbara Beerling, Brisbane Co-ordinator for Heritage Roses for Australia for the last ten years is the guest speaker. She will demonstrate and talk about ‘Pruning Roses Growing in Pots’. Barbara is a qualified horticulturalist who specialises in roses, fruit trees, pruning, disease control and plant identification, and she has invited those attending this meeting to bring their potted roses which she will prune for them. (If you do, make sure your name is on the pot.) This talented lady worked at Perrott’s Nursery, Enoggera, for ten years and after that, at Nova Gardens, The Gap, for nine years. At present she designs and looks after people’s gardens, does pruning and grows roses in pots. May is the month to plant fruit trees which require well drained soil and an open sunny position. Before planting, a lot of organic material should be used in the soil preparation. Dwarf fruit trees which may be grown in pots, are more manageable, and also ideal for those who do not have sufficient garden space. A warm welcome is extended to visitors and new members to come to club meetings on the first Thursday of each calendar month at 9.45a.m. Morning tea is served prior to the meeting. The hall is wheelchair accessible and close to public transport, viz. Enoggera rail and bus routes 599, 590, 350 and 390. For more information, please phone Pat, the president, on 3356 1256.

Most Arana competitive teams have registered at least one win so far, and the following teams are in or near the top half of their points ladder: Arana 1, Division 2; Arana 3, Division 7; Arana 4, Intermediate 4; Arana 5, Intermediate 6; and Arana 10, 11Yrs Div.3. Arana’s four non-competitive teams have also started the season very enthusiastically. As this year marks the fortieth year of Arana Netball Club, a Gala Dinner is planned for Saturday, 17th June, as one of the celebrations of this milestone. All associated with Arana Netball, especially past players, parents, and committee
members, are invited to come. Cost is $80.00 a head, allinclusive (meal, drinks, entertainment,) so book as either individuals or groups by phoning Taryn on 0412 806 169 or Stef on 0479 168 931, for details on how to obtain tickets. More information is also available on the Arana Netball Club Facebook page and the web site www.arananetballclub. com.au. Arana Netball relies heavily on the work of volunteers, so important to all clubs, and to ongoing community support. Meetings are held on the third Monday of each month, in the Arana Sports meeting room of The Hills District Community Centre, Dawson Parade, Arana Hills, commencing at 7.30pm, and all interested in the operation and future of the Club are urged to attend. The May meeting is scheduled for 15th May. For any further information about Arana Netball, email to arananetballclub@ gmail.com or phone Lorraine, President, on 0432 216 407.

Why Play? Where’s the learning in what we do at Mitchelton Pre-Schooling Centre?
What do we, as teachers, learn about children by watching and playing alongside them? How do teachers use children’s involvement in play to build their social skills, resilience, literacy, numeracy, persistence, thinking and problem solving…?
At Mitchelton Pre-Schooling Centre (MPC) our focus each and every day is to build children’s development through play that is significant to their interests. While enabling children to create and recreate real world play scenarios we see how children interact with each other and make sense of their world. Through play, children are involved in negotiating, planning, problem solving and learning to take risks as their ideas come to life. Children are developing fine and gross motor skills whilst making props and organising their play spaces. Each decision they make helps them to practise conversational and assertive skills, building oral language, literacy and mathematical understandings as well as self–esteem. Taking an active role in their learning also offers opportunities to understand that conflict, failure and disappointment are part of life. Working through these issues with support, sets them on their journey for life-long learning. At MPC, we encourage parents to understand the benefits of play by being involved in our daily program as well as taking part in our annual play night. Parents take part in play scenarios and see where and how the learning takes place. The MPC Open Day is June 3 – we invite you to come and see why MPC is such a great place to play.

AIR - North Brisbane Branch News
The North Brisbane branch of the Association of Independent Retirees meet monthly at the Wavell Heights Community Hall in Edinburgh Castle Road. The community hall is located to the right hand side, on the top of the hill going East past the Bowls Club. The regular social meeting is on the third Friday of most months, 9am until noon. Enjoy some chats over coffee/tea and bickies whilst discussing interests. There is usually a guest speaker that will discuss a topic relating to finance or health issues. In addition, there is a separate group dedictated to financial
topics that meet on the second Friday for members only. A main attraction are the social outings that consist of a bus trip and lunch at a low cost. The Association of Retirees is a national group with a regular monthly newsletter and access to a website. They do not advise on the financial matters but discuss matters of interest. Membership is low and the age group is 50plus. The Association is partially self funding or wholly independent of the full pension - thus ways of living better financially are of interest. Come and have a look on the third Fridays of the month. For more information contact, Ph: 3881 1820 or 3351 4126 before 5pm or by email to sitram@powerup.com.au

Roger Says: There are no new sins... the old ones just get more publicity.
On Easter Saturday Jane Keenan, known as Jean or Jeannie slipped quietly away. A Memorial service was held on 27 April 2017. Pine Rivers Shire Council workmen planted trees along Ferny Way in October 1972, the next day the trees lay wilting on the ground supposedly pulled by thoughtless vandals. Scottish born Mrs Jean Keenan of Illuta Avenue was just not able to stand such waste of trees and labour and was observed on her knees replanting the lot. ‘Adviser Ladies’ were always keen to work with gentle Jeannie, who is recorded in the 1974-1988 time-books as a regular attender with a total of 450 hours as a collating table hand for the local Progress Association’s Adviser. As part of the army of unpaid volunteers, the friendly Keenan family undertook letterbox deliveries of the Adviser for over 20 years.

Counsellor’s Column with Robin Botic
Dear Robin, I’ve been struggling with a very serious problem in our marriage. Ten years ago I found out my husband had a serious gambling problem. I’ve tried everything to get him to stop. I hid it from everyone, particularly his family. In the last few years he has got us into so much debt that they now know. My family and our children have bailed us out before. He has attended various support and self-help groups like G.A, but only when he has really stuffed up or I have threatened to leave. He promises the world but delivers nothing. I‘m just so exhausted, I don’t think I can go on any longer. He has no care about what it is doing to us. The lies he tells and the blame he lays on me to con money out of anyone has no limit. I feel I have been ripped apart by it. We were financially secure ten years ago. We owned our own house, had two properties and a good super fund. Everything to look forward to. Now we are mortgaged up to our ears, have lost most of our friends and alienated our families. The last thing he has done is just too awful. I can’t go outside the house. I feel so ashamed. He, under the most deceitful of lies which involved blackening my name, extracted $4000 from this beautiful elderly lady who has been my friend for years. This happened six months ago. I wondered why she was treating me strangely and I only found out because she came around last week desperate for the money or some of it to be returned as promised. I confronted him and we had the most awful of awful rows. I feel so horrid for her because I know how much she needed that money and I know there is no way we can pay it back.
We can’t go to the family again. I don’t know what to do. He was a good person and I loved him so much before this all happened. I’ve covered for him for the last time. Will he ever change? I’m scared about what will happen if I leave him. Jennifer Dear Jennifer, Will he ever change? That nobody knows the answer to, not even him. However, while you keep covering for him as you have done you are actually helping to feed his addiction. Stay with your resolve not to support him in that way any longer. It is very scary to let go of the support and protection you have given. But who or what were you really supporting/protecting? Where did it get either of you? Maybe this is the only way your husband has a chance of choosing to change and to take responsibility for himself. What you have to decide is if, or how, you are going to look after yourself. If you haven’t already done so, take the legal steps necessary to protect any of your remaining assets and yourself from any liability for future debt that he will incur. Don’t work on the hope that he may change. How much has that hope cost you so far? It may also be helpful for you to understand what motivated you to stay as long as you have. Was it love/fear or a mixture of both? Judging yourself harshly for what you have or have not done is not the point. Understanding how it did or did not serve you, then having the courage to act on that knowing, is what will serve you best now and in the future. Obtaining professional support to work through the difficult emotional issues you are faced with would be advisable before you make any final decisions. Although you may have sought the support of agencies such as the Gambling Help Line before, what you were wanting from them then has probably changed. Being in a different space may make what they have to offer you more useful to your present needs. Robin

For Ferny Grove Upgrade Samford Rd
Last month I wrote about my service in the Australian Army, my deployment overseas and at home on operations to provide assistance to Queenslanders after Cyclones, Larry and Yasi. Once again Cyclone Debbie has reminded us of how vulnerable we can all be at times. It also reminds me that when people pull together, we can achieve great things. However, talking about it is not going to get the job done. Results come from real action, from getting amongst it and fixing the real problems. This is exactly what I’ve been doing. I’ve been doorknocking my electorate, visiting schools and sports clubs and talking to local businesses, chambers of commerce and social support organisations. In the mail, you may have received my introduction flyer and my community survey. These Survey results together with the invaluable feedback I’ve received from the community are already identifying key issues which have been neglected and are in vital need of action. Road congestion is one of the stand out issues. The Samford Road Corridor has reached its capacity and residents are spending far too much time travelling in unnecessary congestion. With over 950 additional residences and over 1500 additional cars expected from
the new development in Upper Kedron, this serious congestion problem is only going to get worse. With no current plans to fix this issue, we can expect to be spending more time on this road and less time with our families. The Samford Road Corridor needs urgent upgrading and we need to fight hard to ensure action on this starts before thousands of more vehicles join the queue. You can help by signing this petition and adding your voice to the cause. Please visit www.upgradesamford.com.au to sign the petition and don’t forget to share on Facebook to help us reach as many people as possible. Red Shield Appeal
The Salvation Army’s annual Red Shield Appeal doorknock will take place on the 27th and 28th of May. This great cause provides help to those down on their luck or in significant need. As Chairman of the Pine Rivers District Red Shield Appeal, I’d urge people where possible to get involved as volunteers or by raising funds.

Anzac Day
This year marks the centenary of some of the most significant battles of World War One and the 75th anniversary of crucial events in World War Two including the bombing of Darwin and the Kokoda campaign which in part halted the Japanese advance on Australia. I was privileged to attend several ANZAC ceremonies within Dickson on Anzac Day and also to attend numerous commemorations at are our schools leading up to April 25th.
It’s particularly inspiring to see the growing numbers of young people taking time to remember the sacrifices of past generations to preserve the Australia we enjoy today.
Tax Cuts for Small-Medium Businesses
Businesses in Hills district will benefit from company tax cuts under the Coalition’s Enterprise Tax Plan. Almost 14,000 small and medium businesses across Dickson will have their company tax rates lowered enabling them to reinvest in their business, grow that business and increase jobs. Across Queensland 540,000 businesses will benefit. Businesses are the backbone of the economy. Nationwide they employ 6.5 million people – more than half the Australian workforce. More information on the tax cuts and other support for small business can be found at www.business.gov.au/smallbusiness
Abolition of 457 Visas and changes to Australian Citizenship
As Minister for Immigration and Border Protection I joined the Prime Minister recently to make two important announcements for our nation. The first was the abolition of the 457 visa programme for foreign workers. We want to ensure that Australian workers have absolute first priority for jobs. A new visa process will enable businesses who cannot find a suitably skilled Australian worker to still employ a worker from overseas, but there will be far tighter requirements to do so. The second announcement is to strengthen the integrity of Australian citizenship by putting Australian values at the heart of the process and requirements. Our reforms will ensure applicants are competent in English, have been a permanent resident for at least four years and are committed to our democracy and way of life. Membership of the Australian family is a privilege and should be granted to those who support our values, respect our laws and want to work hard by integrating and contributing to an even better Australia. Ryan News
from your Federal Member for Ryan JANE PRENTICE
Lower taxes delivered for small business
The Coalition Government has delivered on our commitment of lower taxes for Australia’s 2.1 million small businesses – including more than 13,000 small businesses registered in Ryan. The Ten Year Enterprise Tax Plan will cut the small business tax rate to its lowest level in 50 years. We have also increased, by 90,000, the number of businesses to which this tax cut applies, by making a sensible change to the definition of a small business – from a turnover of $2 million per year to $10 million. If every small business employed just one more person we would have no unemployment in Australia. Small business makes up more than 97 per cent of businesses in Australia and employs almost 5 million Australians. The Coalition Government wants to see this number grow. By delivering lower taxes, more Australians can start a small business and hire more people. By cutting the company tax rate and broadening the definition of small business, more local businesses will be able to access the instant asset write-off programme. This will extend eligibility for instantly writing-off new equipment to more small businesses so they can buy new equipment worth $20,000 or less and claim it back straight away. I encourage all small businesses in our electorate to take advantage of this write-off before it ends on 30 June 2017. Visit https://www. ato.gov.au/general/new-legislation/in-detail/direct-taxes/ income-tax-for-businesses/reducing-the-corporate-taxrate/ for more information.

The Ferny Report Mark Furner M.P.
State Member for Ferny Grove
Ferny Grove Upper Kedron Plan
Before the last election I promised to ensure the Queensland Government ‘call in’ the Cedar Woods development in Upper Kedron. This meant the Deputy Premier and Minister for Infrastructure and Planning, Hon Jackie Trad, was able to use her Ministerial power to review the development which had been already approved by the Brisbane City Council (BCC). In June 2015, after reviewing over 1,600 public submissions, the Deputy Premier formally rejected the original development. In place of the original 1,350 lots approved by BCC the Deputy Premier re-issued the development with approval for 480 lots only.
Prior to any future development considerations on the site, BCC was further directed under the Sustainable Planning Act 2009 to undertake updated planning for the Ferny Grove and Upper Kedron area. Since the middle of 2016, BCC has been working to follow this direction. At the end of last month the Deputy Premier approved BCC’s request to proceed to public consultations on their draft Ferny Grove/Upper Mark Furner M.P. Kedron Neighbourhood commemorating our servicemen Plan. Once the BCC releases and women the plan publically, residents will have 30 business days to provide feedback to the council. There are a number of changes Council are proposing which will affect our current landscape into the future. It is important to remember that neighbourhood planning is a matter for councils to determine in consultation with the community. It is critical you take the chance to have your say at this stage. Many people have raised with me the issue of a southern access road, and I’d encourage concerned residents to ensure this is highlighted when lodging submissions. Following the public consultation period BCC will need to consider whether or not to make amendments to the draft plan as a result of the feedback received. To keep up-to-date about the release of the Ferny Grove/Upper Kedron Neighbourhood Plan, including when it opens for community consultation, you can access information on BCC’s website at the following web address: goo.gl/8Fnv2K.
Ferny Grove High School Hall
Ferny Grove High School is currently nearing the limits of its capacity with close to 1,700 students now in attendance. When the school opened in 1980 the structure which is now serving as the school hall was never envisioned to serve such a large student population. Along with the P&C I have sponsored a petition on the Queensland Parliament website calling on Education Queensland to address this issue. To sign the petition and support the school go to goo.gl/QSqUsz.
ANZAC Day
This year marks the 100 year anniversary of the charge of the light-horse at Beersheba. Two thirds of all Australians lost in WWI were killed in 1917 alone, and I was honoured to play a small part in commemorating our servicemen and women at the many ANZAC Day services I attended across the electorate last month.

THUMBS UP THUMBS DOWN THUMBS DOWN to whatever happened
to the ABC as our National Broadcaster specialising in free and fair journalism. It is now a national mouthpiece for minorities and anyone with a grudge to ‘knock Australia and it’s values. It would be nice to see the ABC employ at least one impartial on-air person with the ability to report all sides of an issue!
THUMBS DOWN to our super popular government in Qld that employs more than 1000 spin doctors to tell us what we are allowed to know. Lucky we do not really need the money for anything else in Queensland. THUMBS UP to a string of public holidays
and great weather to enjoy them. Easter, Anzac Day and Labor Party Day all finish off the swimming season nicely. Can we order the same conditions for Christmas please?
THUMBS DOWN to news that in NSW 25% of new homes are purchased by non-nationals. I bet if Queenslanders were allowed to know, this figure would be much higher. If they were aware of the current water, electricity and gas prices, would they still buy?
