Countdown to carols is on!

Hark! The angels will be singing at The Hills Community Carols on Saturday 7th December from 4pm - 8pm at George Willmore Park, Ferny Hills. This free family event kicks off at 4pm with a huge variety of performers, food, rides, face painting, and of course, a visit from Santa himself! The event will conclude at approximately 8pm with an impressive fireworks display that is not to be missed. This annual festive event is known as one of the most community oriented on the calendar and the organising committee includes representatives from the Golden Valley Keperra Lions Club, the Hills District PCYC, the Ferny Hills Amateur Fishing Club and Moreton Bay Regional Council. This event promises to get the family into the Christmas spirit, so gather everyone up, bring a picnic rug, find your spot in the park and enjoy the magic of Christmas. Everyone is welcome! The Brisbane Bunya Lions Club will be presenting CAROLS IN THE PARK on Saturday, 15 December at 5.30pm at West Mitchelton JRLF Club 497 Samford Rd, Gaythorne.

Making a difference one birthday at a time Meet Mackenzie (Mack) Williams, an inspiring Arana Hills local and grade seven student at Mt Maria College.

Like most other teenagers, each year he eagerly anticipates his birthday and having a celebration. However, unlike most other children his age who may ask for the latest Mackenzie (Mack) Williams on his video game or gadget, 13th birthday this year. for his 13th birthday, Mack asked friends and family to make a donation to, The Smith Family, an Australian children's charity that helps disadvantaged children and their families, using education as a key tool. Through his selfless initiative and the generosity of friends, family and neighbours, Mack gifted The Smith Family $1,257. This isn’t the first birthday Mack has selflessly asked friends for donations instead of presents. Last year, for his 12th birthday, this generous young lad gifted $980.50 to Variety The Children’s Charity, that helps children who live and grow up with a serious illness, disability or disadvantage. So what made this teenager choose to follow this path? After discovering a box of past gifts under his bed and realising

THE

he had only played with them once (or not at all), he found himself pondering how he can make a difference and help disadvantaged children instead of receiving more materialistic items that he did not use. Hence the concept of asking friends and family to make a contribution to charity, instead of receiving gifts. Mack isn’t only recognised by his peers and members of his tight knit community. In June this year, the unselfish teenager fittingly received a very special award at school - The Charism Award, given to students who enhance everyday life at the College, through positivity, love of work and who give to others without the expectation of recognition or rewards. It seems everyone that Mack touches in life is inspired by him. On a recent holiday to Singapore, he stayed at a plush hotel. His mother Leslie told the hotel of his efforts and they donated $100USD to Unicef on his behalf. Furthermore, after finishing our interview with Mack, our eight year old helper walked away thinking to himself of what charity he could donate to on his next birthday! Proud parents, Carl and Leslie are astounded by his efforts. ‘Mack has always been a generous child, even though he is very outgoing and social, he is also very just. Always wanting fairness for everyone,’ said Leslie Williams, Mack’s mum. ‘You need to want to do it, it shouldn’t be forced. It’s just getting that moment of inspiration,’ said Mack. Mack already has plans for next year’s Charity!

Reminiscing the Past of Golden Valley Keperra Lions Local Personnels News from the Samford Museum

In 2007, Grovely Railway Station was scheduled to be upgraded and Samford Museum became the new home for the retired station building, thanks to the generous support of Ferny Grove and Everton State MP’s. During WW2, soldiers from the Grovely Army Camp travelled through Grovely station. It therefore seemed fitting to create a permanent War Memories tribute within the station building at the museum, notably dedicated to local personnel who served in all wars. This was possible thanks to a Q150 grant, along with generous support from the Samford Progress and Protection Association, businesses and the community. The 8th November 2019 will represent the tenth anniversary of the opening of the museum’s War Memories display in the refurbished building. Mrs Rosemary McGinn (nee Pickering) remembers the WW2 time well in the area. The Indian service personnel; Photo courtesy of Mrs Nancy Rosenthal ‘We lived across the road from the Army Camp. Dad owned a quarry which is now Keperra Sanctuary. A detention centre was within the camp where Allied persons who had contravened military rules were held. American prisoners came and took deco for construction work,’explained Rosemary. Another local lady, Mrs Nancy Rosenthal also recalls that the Indian service personnel used to come to Patrick’s farm (on the corner of today’s Patricks Road and Dawson Parade) for fresh milk for others who were sick back at Grovely Camp. They had been prisoners of war and were not supposed to be out of the camp. She mentions that they were really nice fellows. Books and files pertaining to service personnel and a large collection of war-themed books can be found in the Samford library are available for research. Following the disastrous fire at Paddington Depot in 1962, in which 65 trams were destroyed, the Brisbane City Council built a further eight trams. Some parts used in these trams were retrieved The Phoenix Tram from the wreckage of the fire and so these trams were fittingly called ‘Phoenix Class.’ Phoenix class trams were built to the basic design of the FM class, but with significant improvements. They featured padded seats, fluorescent lighting, timber interior panelling and internal mirrors at each end to enable conductors to better monitor the doors. They also had advanced wheels, specially designed to reduce the noise whilst travelling. As with the FMs, they carried 110 passengers and were adorned with the picture of a Phoenix bird under each driver’s window. Of these eight trams, the 554 was the last built. It was also the tram which carried out the very last tram trip in Brisbane on 13th April 1969 and is the youngest tram in the fleet at Ferny Grove. The museums’s driver-training program has commenced under the control of Ian Martin. However, there is still room for a few more trainees. If you would like to learn to drive the fleet of trams at Brisbane Tramway Museum, please ring the museum on 3351 1776. In the men’s shed, the tram simulator is almost complete and is awaiting placement in the shop area where it can be properly supervised. Initially, ‘drivers’ will be able to simulate working the tram on the Brisbane Tramway Museum’s own lines. An interesting sideline to the normal activities has been the use of our grounds by State Emergency Service personnel to carry out chainsaw training—well away from houses so the noise factor is not a problem! Remember, the museum is operational on each Sunday afternoon (weather permitting) from 12.30pm until 4pm, with six trams in use—no need to book!! However the museum does take bookings for groups wishing to visit. Simply phone 3351 1776.

All About African Violets! from The Mitchelton & Districts Garden Club

On Thursday 7th November, the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club meets at the Enoggera Memorial Hall in Trundle Street. African Violets is the topic of guest speakers, Althea and Barry Connor. The African Violet is a very fussy member of the plant family and it must have the right conditions to survive. Althea and Barry will share this information with those attending the meeting on the first Thursday in November. The meeting commences after morning tea is served at 9.45 a.m. Visitors and new members are most welcome! The December meeting on the 5th will be for members and invited guests only. This meeting will consist of end of year activities such as presentation of prizes to successful exhibitors, celebration of the club’s 55th anniversary (which occurred last month), and other entertainment. The club will then go into recess until the first Thursday in February 2020. If you haven't already done so, don't delay in sowing seeds for summer annuals and vegetables. Sunflowers and zinnias are a couple of hardy plants to grow. It wouldn't hurt to scatter seeds of the small marigold here and there in the garden too. Not only will the marigold flowers attract bees, the marigold plants will also deter nematodes attacking the roots of the other plants you are growing. The hall is accessible by wheel chair and close to public transport. For more information please phone the president, Pat, on 3356 1256.

Roll Up to U3A Pine Rivers Open Day U3A Pine Rivers will be holding their annual Open Day on Thursday 14th November 2019 from 9.30am to 12.30pm at the Strathpine Community Centre, Mecklem Street, Strathpine. The program of activities on show will include exercise, choir, music and dance. Tutors will display information regarding their classes and various activities. Memberships and renewals will be accepted on the day. A free shuttle bus will operate from the Strathpine Shopping Centre to the Community Centre for your convenience. MAKE YOUR HOUSE A HOME

Tips, information and local service providers that can to help transform your house into a comforting and welcoming environment for all the family!

Thinking of renovating but worried about the pitfalls?

Renovating your home is one of the best investments you will ever make.

Not only do you raise the value of your home, you also get to enjoy its increased liveability whilst avoiding the hassle and expense of moving. It sounds great, but there can be risks! Choosing the wrong builder can potentially cause your dream renovation to become a living nightmare punctuated by cost blowouts, endless delays and poor workmanship. ‘The problem is, some builders try and cut corners even before they start. They can skim over critical details and don't carry out a thorough pre-construction inspection,’ said Andrew Boucher, Director of Boucher Build. ‘Without a comprehensive pre-construction inspection, a client can be left with a scope of works that looks good on the surface, but may miss many of the foreseeable (and costly) problems that will wreck your renovation.’ With over 15 years experience, local builders Boucher Build, believe renovating should be an exciting and rewarding experience for everyone. This family run builder aims to minimise unnecessary changes due to poor planning. That's why they start all projects with a comprehensive pre-construction inspection where they get to

A recent kitchen renovation by local builders Boucher Build know the project and their clients expectations. This is followed by a visual inspection of the site and cross check of all plans. Finally, they spend time pouring over the details to ensure they can identify any hidden risks and their cost implications. The result is a comprehensive scope of work and a detailed quote. This ensures the client fully understands what's involved before they sign the contract. So whether you're thinking of a renovation, extension, new build, kitchen or bathroom, enjoy the peace of mind that comes from working with a professional builder that guarantees your satisfaction. Give your trees some TLC!

Local Builders You Can Trust

Living in a leafy neighbourhood adds value to your property as trees improve living conditions . They shade out the heat of summer, store carbon, recycle oxygen and, of course, look beautiful! However, keeping your trees healthy and looking fantastic sometimes means branches or the crown of the tree need to be pruned. Always ensure your trees are pruned by qualified Arborists to Australian standards as this will ensure the tree(s) remain healthy and sound. If your tree(s) are hacked at by unskilled tree loppers, the tree is likely to be weakened, increasing the likelihood of it falling during a storm or high winds. Not only will your tree be healthier if worked on by an Arborist, but it will look better too.

Renovations | Extensions | New Builds With over 15 Years Experience, Boucher Build are the experts in renovations, extensions and new builds. Whether it is a renovation, extension, new build, kitchen or bathroom, you can expect a quality build on time everytime.

How to choose the right interior paint colour

• Your local resident painting company • Servicing Brisbane’s northside for over 10yrs • All domestic & commercial works • Professional & friendly staff • Quality materials & tools used

Choosing the right paint colour can be tricky. Take some time to think about what kind of ambiance you want in each room. Certain colors add weight to the room, while others create a lighter tone. Here are a few pointers when it comes to choosing your colour palette. Paint with warm colors to create comfortable, energizing rooms. Warm colors include red, orange, and yellow. The brightest tints of these colors are bold and vibrant, but can be too strong when used too often. More muted shades can make a room feel cosier, similar to a summer or autumn day. Warm colors work well in rooms that feature a lot of activity, such as living rooms. You can also add subtle warmth to a room by painting it in shades of white lightly tinted with warm colors. Choose cool colors to make a room relaxing. Blue, green, and purple are all cool colors. Cool colors can freshen up a room or help you calm down after a long day. They make for good choices in bedrooms and sitting rooms. Lighter shades can feel more vibrant, while darker shades can feel more soothing. For example, a light shade of blue can remind you of the water at the beach. A darker shade would feel much heavier. Select neutral colors to balance out other colors. At first glance, the various shades of white and gray seem boring. In decorating, they are very useful because they fit well in any color palette. They tone down warm or light colors, but they also lighten cool or dark colors. Black, brown and light blue are a Master Painters Association QLD few alternative colors that can QBCC 702280 serve as a neutral base.

Top Interior Tips with Natalee Sands

We were delighted to steal some time with designer extraordinaire, Natalee Sands to discover some top tips for crafting and maintaining the home. Natalee is Principal Designer at Aesthetic Blinds and Design, a locally based blind and window dressing business. With over 16 years experience in the interior design world, and with a plethora of outstanding testimonials under her belt, you can safely be assured Natalee certainly know what she is talking about! Read on to discover how to make the most of your interior space along with some maintenance suggestions from this talented local.

MAKE YOUR HOUSE A HOME

NORTH BRISBANE’S PREMIER BLINDS & WINDOW DRESSING SPECIALIST

Tip 1 - Bring the Green Indoors

This is a perfect way to freshen up a space that may be lacking. Your home will flow beautifully from indoor to outdoor and there are plenty of low maintenance indoor plants on the market. Or why not consider a synthetic plant? I can't believe how real they look and all they'll need is a dust occasionally. Don't forget to funk up the plant with a nice pot - you could go eclectic, natural weave or blend in with a stylish glazed pot.

2. Fabric Blinds: How do I clean them?

All blind fabrics have some kind of fabric protection so most dirty marks are removeable. The best, easiest and most effective way is to use those little white sponges that you can find in the supermarket, hardware stores, and even the cheap stores. They are made of melamine foam, which when wet acts as a super fine sand paper. This won’t damage any protective surfaces and will lift off the mark. They are also amazing for marks on the walls without tainting your paint! I’ve also used them on curtain fabric as well and they have done a sensational job. If you have any stubborn stains, or just want to freshen up your blinds after a few years so they look brand new, look at getting them professionally cleaned.

3. How to keep your house cool in Summer without the expensive electricity bills. Did you know the best way to stop your house warming up is to stop the sun from heating up your glass/windows in the first place? The easiest way to implement this is by installing outdoor blinds. This is particularly important for the West and East windows. Last year, one of my clients had a ‘Folding Arm Awning’ put on her western side over the pool. She was very astounded by how much it cooled down the inside of the house. There are many types of outdoor blinds to suit different installations, and they come with varying price tags.

4. Pre Christmas Installations

If you are hoping to get your window coverings before Christmas, I would suggest to get your quote now. Orders need to be confirmed and deposits paid to guarantee pre Christmas installation. Curtains and Shutters - 1st week November, Blinds - 3rd week November. All products have different cut off dates so contact me to check. If you don’t require them for Christmas, manufacturing will still continue up to Christmas. There will be a three week break, then back to it. So if you want them installed when you return from your Christmas holidays, order early December. www.hillsecho.com

Feature Welcome to The Health Hub! This local health and wellness guide is jam packed with health and wellbeing news and information from The Hills District and surrounds.

Gentlemen! Have you had your ‘Man Check’ yet?

We often hear the saying ‘Life begins at 40’,but does it really for our male counterparts? Even from the age of 30, men will experience a steady drop in testosterone and will more than likely start noticing some physical and mental changes a decade or two after their testosterone levels begin to drop. Some of these changes are outlined below:Physical Changes Testosterone helps build muscle mass and improve bone mass and density. Therefore, men experiencing a drop in testosterone levels may notice a loss of muscle and even increased body fat. Many men will notice increased fatigue, decreased sex drive and sometimes hair loss. Mental Changes As with any hormonal changes, decreased testosterone levels can lead to mental and emotional shifts. Some men report experiencing depression and other mood disorders. Some may also experience a lack of mental clarity, irritability, and can find it harder to focus. “Unlike a woman going through menopause, testosterone in men will drop gradually over time. This means that the older a man is, the more likely he is to begin experiencing the above symptoms,” said Blaine Woods, Director of

TerryWhite Chemmart (TWCM) Keperra Compounding pharmacy. “Occasionally, men under the age of 30 will start experiencing some symptoms of low testosterone, which can be for a multitude of reasons. Tests are available to determine testosterone levels and there are treatments available.” Currently, one of our local pharmacies, TerryWhite Chemmart (TWCM) Keperra Compounding pharmacy are offering mens health checks that include; BMI, blood pressure, blood glucose and cholesterol checks, with the added option of testing your hormone levels. These tests can help men monitor their health and show indications of low testosterone levels. The TWCM Man Check is a standard health check with some additional questions and support material related to men’s health. The information offered is excellent and it is worth coming popping into the pharmacy just to get the brochure. GO2 Health at Everton Park Expands Coordinated Health Care for Veterans and the Community

GO2 Health is delighted welcome two new doctors, Dr Heidi McKenzie and Dr Jason Kovan-Boss, to the team. Dr McKenzie also attends some surgical assisting at Greenslopes Private Hospital. She has had a longstanding engagement with the veteran community as her husband is a veteran. Dr McKenzie has been involved with a wide range of veteran organisations including Mates4Mates, 42 for 42 and Diggers Rest. “I am looking forward to working with a wide range of patients at GO2 Health including veterans where there is a focus on the whole person. The supplementary health services of physio, psychology, massage, acupuncture, exercise physiology, reformer Pilates, hydrotherapy and dietetics means we can get lasting results with a team approach,” said Dr McKenzie. Dr Kovan-Boss has recently sold his practice at Albany Creek. He has wide-ranging knowledge and experience having worked with adolescents during his time as a high school physics teacher and youth worker, he has also worked as a sexual health counsellor and life coach. As a doctor he has supported young couples through fertility challenges, assisted patients struggling with obesity, and

He has also developed strong relationships with DVA Advocates. “I particularly enjoy working with veterans and appreciate the sacrifices they have made in serving our country. Many of them have had a hard journey, but ultimately they want to be well. They just need that extra care to get back on track. With the benefit or being both a counsellor and a GP, I am a very accepting listener. In a confidential and safe way, I can help coach veterans back into living balanced and satisfying civilian lives,” said Dr Kovan-Boss. Bringing JOY to the community

We have all heard that regular exercise has many benefits. It can assist in preventing many age-related changes to muscles, bones and joints. Exercise can even help in reversing changes that may have already occurred, such as increasing bone density. With this in mind, local business owner Miranda Pardon of Enhance PT has launched a new exercise class called ‘JOY’ - a low to moderate class for ‘Just Older Youth.’ The JOY class is designed specifically for people who are 55 and above and focuses on increasing balance, strength and flexibility as well as improving general fitness levels. Miranda is extremely passionate about keeping the older population moving freely, living stronger and living independently for as long as possible. “I’ve always had a lot of older friends in my life, which is one of the main reasons I became a personal trainer,” explained Miranda. “The beauty of the JOY class is that it is a safe, social and fun exercise class. Plus, you won’t find yourself having to do burpees or drop to the ground and carry out 50 push ups here!” However, did you know that there are equally important social benefits that exercise can bring to your life, as Miranda has discovered. Since starting the JOY classes, she has noticed that, not only are the classes extremely popular, but they have had a positive social affect on many of her clients. “Some of our clients have reconnected with friends they haven’t seen for a decade, whilst others have formed

new friendships and bonds. We seem to have formed a ‘community’ within the community, where we all check on one another. For example, if someone is missing from class we will text or phone to check if they are okay or need help,” said Miranda. So if you’re looking for a safe and enjoyable exercise class surrounded by supportive and friendly locals, why not head along and join the JOY? It is never to late to start your fitness journey and people of all fitness levels are welcomed. JOY classes run every Wednesday at the All Saints Church Hall, 86 Cobbity Crescent Arana Hills (across the road from the Arana Hills Library). For further details visit: enhancept.com.au or call Miranda on 0434 401 750.

Rest and Digest… Your Roadmap to a Healthier Gut

With Integrative Pharmacist – Jacqui Hagidimitriou

I recently spent a week away on a business trip to the beautiful Western Australia. Travel, for me, is always exciting, to see different towns, landscapes and experience local cuisine. Yet, while my mind is excited, my gut is often a little nervous… A little voice appears from my belly: “Will she feed me at the right time?” “Will she be able to move about normally?” “Will she even be able to access a nice toilet when necessary?” Now, this gut sounds super fussy, but I’m sure some of you can relate! It is a common problem for many that changes to not just the diet, but also sleep patterns and movement can cause havoc for our tantrummy tummies! This is because digestion is as much about our nervous system and the environment surrounding our eating pattern, as it is about our food choices. In the last edition of the Hills Echo, I talked about the fight or flight mechanism of stress. Opposite to that is our ability to rest and digest. Often in our fast-paced lives we eat without thinking and quickly go to our next task. However, the food we have consumed has a much longer journey ahead. What we do throughout the day can impact on whether this food has a nice uneventful journey through our digestive tract, or whether it will cause, let’s say, some turbulence along the way. Our body will place digestion lower on the priority list when we are under stress and this can impact on the speed

www.hillsecho.com

and smoothness of the movement of the intestines, which slowly move food through its long tubes, to extract as much nutrients as possible. It’s no coincidence that the call to evacuate the transportation line at the end of the gut occurs more strongly after eating a meal. This is called the post-prandial reflex and if obeyed, helps ensure there is enough room on board for all “passengers” as the next lot of food comes through. Like a cheeky child, our gut may go silent for a while if its signals are ignored, but as all parents know, if there’s silence for too long, there’s trouble brewing. So, keeping your gut happy, keeps you happy so listen to its cues, even when on holiday! To learn more from Jacqui about digestion and stress, you can join her 7pm on the 27th November at The Clinic Hub for a fun, interactive evening “Treat Yourself to a Stress-Less Christmas”. Phone 3289 1559 for more details!

Peripheral neuropathy (PN) refers technically to any condition arising from nerve damage in the limbs and extremities, but the term is mostly used in relation to generalised nerve damage, rather than disorders which affect only single nerves. PN has varying causes and symptoms including numbness, pain, burning and tingling. In some patients, it causes very distressing restless legs. Although common, PN can be difficult to diagnose clinically, as the symptoms can be both invisible and subjective – as always, there is no objective way to quantify or compare pain-levels between patients. For example, severe pain experienced by one person may be perceived and described as discomfort by another. Similarly, different patients can describe apparently similar symptoms of PN as either “burning” or “tingling”. Furthermore, PN can mimic other conditions and can be silent, making it easy to miss, or leading to an incorrect diagnosis without objective evidence. Luckily, neurophysiology testing can help... Nerve conduction studies (NCS) and electromyography (EMG) provide a clear, objective, quantified measurement of nerve function – effectively making PN “visible”. For example, a patient of ours with Type 2 Diabetes recently complained of pins & needles in their toes. Although this is a typical complication of diabetes, the GP referred the patient for NCS as a precaution. Unexpectedly, the results indicated severe PN, which led to a diagnosis of kidney failure. The patient was subsequently referred for life-saving dialysis. Objectively documenting the function of peripheral nerves (especially in cases where the symptoms are subjective) is vital - even when the diagnosis appears “obvious”. Corbett Neurophysiology Services (CNS) routinely bulkbills NCS and EMG testing in Brisbane, Ipswich and the Gold Coast. Waiting times for appointments are currently only a few weeks. Results are explained immediately by our consultant Neurologists and a comprehensive report is sent to your referring Doctor within 24 hours. For more information, visit www.corbett.com.au or phone 07 5503 2499. Don’t stay in invisible pain any longer - ask your GP for a referral for NCS today.

Dear Deborah, A child’s welfare certainly does come before an adults’ with Robin Botic sensitivities. Children are our first duty of care. There appears to be two important issues going on here for you. Dear Robin, One. The principal of duty of care to your child, which you My husband Daniel and I have a two year old daughter, feel Dan - by his actions - is neglecting. Imogen. I went back to work when Imogen was one year old Two. How this matter can be addressed diplomatically, so your and we consider ourselves fortunate that Dan’s mother (Jan) is daughter’s needs are met and Jan’s feelings are not hurt — not able to look after her three days a week. Recently an incident more than necessary. happened whilst Imogen was in Jan’s care that we have had several fights over with no real resolution. A couple of weeks Of course it hurts and disappoints us if we feel our partner is ago, Imogen came back from Jan’s with an uncomfortable red not prioritizing our child’s need in the way we want and feel they should. How much is this a part of your upset? Dan’s nappy rash bottom. I was upset about it because to me that initial reaction may have been to do with your level of upset meant that her nappies were not being changed frequently and your expressed desire to do something then and there about enough or she was not being wiped down properly. I wanted it, rather than discounting of Imogen’s welfare. to speak to Jan there and then about it and ask her to be more attentive. Daniel said I was jumping the gun. Nothing like that There is an automatic tendency to defend family, if it had been your mum, he might well have been right behind you. I am has happened before and that his mother would be so upset to not saying that in this instance it was appropriate but more as think we thought she was not looking after Imogen properly. a way of understanding where Dan might be unconsciously Admittedly, Jan does take things to heart particularly where coming from in his reaction to yours. He’d probably done a her grandchildren are concerned, but I think Daniel is far quick calculation – Imogen had been looked after just fine more worried about his mothers’ feelings than his daughter’s to this point, there may be other reasons for the rash rather welfare, and to me that is just not on. Deborah Unfortunately, when we get in reactive positions the need to be right can also kick in and we can find ourselves stuck in a position that we don’t really fully subscribe to. To understand what you both really think and the way in which you would act with regard to very important questions like this, you need to turn down the heat and reactivity if you want to deal with these issues effectively. Discuss how you could do it diplomatically. One suggestion is to say something like “Imogen’s urine must be more acidic or she is teething etc because I have noticed that her bottom gets red really quickly if I don’t change her reasonably soon and give her a good wipe THE WORK WELL down.” The subtext of this is. “This happens with me also Jan, no criticism intended and this is what I do.” Also make sure Phone: Jan has enough wipes, cream and nappies on hand, she may 0414 856 811 have run out and not wanted to let you know, maybe it was too difficult to get them. Many things are possible. Jan is getting older, maybe her physical ability to look after Imogen is being challenged. from your State Member for Everton TIM MANDER

I’ve been in discussion with Cr Matt Constance to work out the feasibility of this walk path/bikeway and will continue to investigate this project. I’ll keep you all up to date with any progress.

Bridge Link

Get Ready – Storm Season

Tim Mander MP at the Boundary Park side of the creek Locals from Everton Hills have contacted me about constructing a bridge from Boundary Park (Everton Hills) to the Kedron Brook Bikeway (Mitchelton). This section is the missing link in connecting local bike riders and pedestrians with a safe pathway to the city.

Blackwood St Festival Highlights

Summer is fast approaching, and so is our storm season. Queenslanders can be hit hard with a wide range of natural disasters and I want to encourage you to take these three steps to ‘Get Ready’. Step 1: Have a Plan A household emergency and evacuation plan will ensure you and your household know exactly what to do if the worst happens. Step 2: Pack Supplies If you’re unable to leave your home due to an emergency, pack some essential items to last you three days. Make sure everyone knows where your emergency kit is located and that it’s easily accessible. Step 3: Make sure you’re insured Whether you own your own home or are renting, make sure you know what insurance cover you have regarding natural disasters. The ‘Get Ready’ booklet will provide you with suggested questions to ask your insurer. For more information, visit: https://www.getready.qld.gov.au

Keeping Safe Online

Peter Dutton MP at the recent Day for Daniel

Day for Daniel

Day for Daniel was held on Friday 25 October 2019, it is one of the largest child safety awareness days of its kind in the country. I was really pleased to attend the Walk for Daniel on the Sunshine Coast and support Denise and Bruce Morcombe at this event. They have done some amazing work in highlighting the importance of child protection since tragically losing their son Daniel in 2003. Child protection is everyone’s business and it was fantastic to see hundreds of local residents, school groups and community organisations support the event. I encourage you to visit danielmorcombefoundation.com.au to find out more about the work of the foundation and how you can get involved and help keep our kids safe.

State Member for Ferny Grove

Ferny Grove Centre of Excellence nears completion

The $19.9 million Centre of Excellence at Ferny Grove State High School will be completed this year on time and on budget. Announced in June 2018, as part of the Palaszczuk Government’s 2020 Ready program the centre will be home to 22 new classrooms, four science labs, and a specialist STEM studio. It will be open to students on the first day of term one next year. 2020 will also see the construction of a $12 million wholeof-school hall/performing arts centre at the school which will contain a new state-of-the-art AV room, box office and performance rooms.

Since taking office in February 2015 the Palaszczuk Government has added 2,000 new classrooms and delivered 13 new schools in the state with a another eight more in 2020 and a further five to open in 2021. Investing in education is the cornerstone to the future of Queensland, and I am making sure that our community receives its fair share.

Mitchie High refurbishment begins in 2020

It has been over 70 years since Mitchelton State High School opened its doors to students. Today the school is in need of a little TLC. At the 2017 election I gave a commitment that Mitchie High would receive a $10 million injection of much-needed funding to improve its facilities. I can now report that I am delivering on that commitment and the school’s plan for a new technology hub and resource centre have been approved by the Education Department. Construction will begin in first term next year and will provide new spaces for IT and design classes. The hall and canteen will also undergo major refits and the double basketball court will be fully covered, providing more shade space for school activities and sporting meets.

North West Youth Accommodation Service assists young homeless people to get into housing and to create a stable home life. I had the great privilege of hosting them at Queensland Parliament for their annual fundraiser last month. With outgoing president Robert Granger, new president Holly Davies and Manager Nicole Walsh.
