7 Reasons Why Ladies Should Lift
There’s still a pretty clear gender divide at the gym. Men tend to stick to the weights section and grunt as loudly as possible, while the majority of women avoid weights at all costs and opt for the running machines instead. Of course, this isn’t to say that no women lift weights, but there is definitely an imbalance. Maybe women are less sure about how to use them, or are scared of looking too muscley. However, lifting weights will not magically turn a woman into the Incredible Hulk. The reason for this is that ladies typically have 10% less testosterone than men. Testosterone is the primary muscle building hormone, so females are going to struggle to gain large amounts of muscle mass. Here’s why this trend should change, and why more women should give pumping iron a go. Stronger bones and connective tissue – Lifting weights is load bearing exercise which helps strengthen bones. Maintaining strong and healthy bones lowers your risk of osteoporosis. Your metabolic rate will increase – For every pound of lean muscle mass gained, you burn an extra 50 calories per day. Decrease your risk of injury – Lifting weights helps develop stronger tendons, this gives your joints more support and stability through daily tasks. Boost stamina and energy levels – When you are stronger you have more energy for day to day tasks and you won’t get anywhere near as tired. Stress Relief – Exercise in general is a great way to manage stress. Researchers have consistently found that those who regularly strength train tend to manage
stress better and experience fewer adverse reactions to stressful situations as those who do not exercise. In addition, resistance-training studies on older adults show that moderate intensity weightlifting improves memory and cognitive function. Next time you need to blow off some steam, hit the weights. Anti – ageing – You lose muscle and strength as you age, however if you strength train you will develop and retain your strength and muscle mass helping to maintain your youthful shape. Reduction in body fat levels - This goes hand in hand with having more lean muscle mass and speeding your metabolic rate up. Lowering body fat reduces the amount of toxins in your body which improves the quality and elasticity of your skin. So ladies if you are looking to feel strong, determined and confident in everything you do from fitting into jeans, to moving heavy furniture, to playing with kids, to dealing with a stressful career, start lifting today!

Q & A with Dr Jane Brazier from Breast Screen QLD
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month - an important time for women to think about their breast health. Dr Jane Brazier answers some common questions about breast cancer and having a breast screen. What is breast cancer? Breast cancer is a disease that develops in breast tissue as a result of abnormal cells. Eventually these cells may form a lump in the breast or, in some cases, spread to other parts of the body. Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in Australian women, with 1 in 8 women being diagnosed by the time they turn 85. What is a breast screen? A breast screen is a special x-ray of the breast to look for the signs of early breast cancer. A breast screen is the most effective way of detecting breast cancers early, well before they can be seen or felt by a woman or her doctor. Who can have a breast screen? We provide free breast cancer screening for women aged 50 - 74 years. Women aged 40-49 years and 75 and over are also eligible for a free breast screen. Having a breast screen only takes 30 minutes and it is recommended every two years. All our radiographers are women and you don’t need a GP referral.
Page 24 - October 2018, The Hills Echo
What does it mean to be ‘breast aware’? There is no right or wrong way to check your breasts. Being ‘breast aware’ is about getting to know the normal look and feel of your breasts. If you find any breast changes that concern you, contact your doctor without delay. What if I’m under 40? There is no current evidence that screening mammography is effective in detecting early stages of breast cancer in women under 40 years of age. Women under forty should be ‘breast aware’ and any changes should be discussed with their doctor. Brisbane Northside services are available at Chermside, B r i s b a n e C i t y, Keperra, Kippa-Ring, North Lakes and Indooroopilly. Appointments can be made by phoning 13 20 50 or book online at breastscreen.qld. gov.au Dr Jane Brazier

What’s Stress Got To Do With It?
‘Stress’ is a term used to refer to some life events and our reactions to them. People think of being stressed as ‘bad’ - to be avoided - however ‘stress’ is simply our normal reaction to adjusting to change. Any event that involves change is a ‘stressor’- getting married, moving house, and having a baby are among the most stressful things that humans experience. Stress doesn’t need to be thought of as ‘good’ or ‘bad’, it’s a normal part of our lives. The problem is when we experience ongoing (chronic) stress. Our body produces stress hormones (cortisol, adrenaline, epinephrine), which help us respond t o c hange eff ec t i ve ly. Unfortunately, long-term exposure to these hormones can lead to physiological changes, e.g. general inflammation, which can increase the risk of serious diseases (e.g. auto-immune diseases) later in life. We can also experience more sleep problems, gastrointestinal conditions, and have increased risk of cardiovascular conditions (e.g. high blood pressure, strokes). Psychologically, chronic stress is linked t o i n c r e a s e d a n x i e t y, depression, and other trauma related conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder. There are many ways we can improve our ability to manage stress in our lives. Self-care is extremely important – eating and sleeping as well as possible, exercise, taking time out to relax and to do enjoyable things, and spending time with supportive people. Activities that slow down, and connect the mind and body such as meditation, yoga, tai-chi and massage have proven beneficial. And most importantly - don’t be afraid to seek professional help if needed - everyone has a limit and sometimes we need that extra help to get on top of things. Skin treatments are not just for celebrities!
As Queenslanders we all know that we need to get our skin checked regularly for suspect moles and spots. How do we manage everyday ageing of our skin? The ultraviolet light from the sun is a major contributor to making our skin look old. It damages the fibres in our skin – collagen and elastin. When this happens, the skin begins to sag, stretch and have a patchy appearance. It can become dry, cracked open to infection. There are so many salons, clinics and magic creams out there. It can be a gamble deciding which option to choose. Secret Skin Studio offers an alternative to the mainstream beauty salon services. The therapist takes the time to assess each individual skin concern and present options that are suitable for you. It may be as simple as using your skincare products in a different way or adding in some professional treatments. Skin treatment is not just for celebrities. Nor is it all botox and horrific face peels. There are so many options for non-invasive treatments. For example a diamond microdermabrasion treatment including a specialist mask is referred to as our ‘instant gratification’ treatment. It gently resurfaces, to reduce the appearance of those age spots and fine lines. Secret Skin Studio can offer an affordable, hassle free approach to looking your best. A personal Skin Consultation is available for $30. No hard sales and no spam. If you have questions about your skin contact Elizabeth on 041 2878 511.

A Gym That Is Right For YOU!
Fabulous Physical Fun is a fitness studio conveniently located at the Ferny Grove Shopping Village, next to Coles. The studio specialises in fitness for the mature body, or if people find the competitive mood in gyms is not for them. Studio owner, Bonnie Cunial, started her business about 12 years ago, when at the age of 52, she became a personal trainer. She saw there was a real need for people her own age to become fitter, stronger and more flexible. Bonnie wanted to encourage her clients to work at their own pace and to make the experience fun. The studio has evolved to become a welcoming environment, with qualified trainers and a wide variety of classes to suit all needs. Clients’ thoughts about Fabulous Physical Fun… Yvonne from Redcliffe (yes, she travels 3-4 times a week. Phew! ) is 70 years young. ‘About 4 years ago I started at the studio. I was about 10 kilos heavier, tired all the time, didn’t drink water, and my diet, well… it wasn’t real healthy. Not only have I lost weight, but I have energy to play with my two grandchildren. I really feel about 10 years younger!’ John, retired, from Albany Creek. ‘I started at the studio with my wife about 2 years ago. In that time I have gained more upper body strength, I have more stamina and energy, so I can now work more easily in the garden.’ Barbara is a mature lady from Samford. She joined in 2016, about a year after her breast cancer treatment finished. ‘I was tired and sluggish all the time back then. I moved really slowly, because before my cancer treatment, I was pretty active. In the beginning I started off gently, with 1-2 classes per week. Now I do 4 classes a week. I feel vibrant, my eyes are bright and I have made some lifelong friends.’ Call Bonnie on 0413 600 502 for a Introductory Trial Offer.

Snappy, teary, tender and bloated?
Many women accept that PMS is a normal part of life that they just have to deal with. This monthly mayhem doesn’t have to be part of your life! ‘Those monthly changes in your mood, appetite, energy and sleep patterns may be annoying and should definitely not be considered as normal’ says local Naturopath and Acupuncturist, Patricia McNab. In her 25 years of Practice as a Natural Therapist, Patricia has helped many women (and their partners) with a broad collection of symptoms that are commonly experienced in the last week or two of a monthly menstrual cycle. According to Patricia, those common symptoms of breast soreness, food cravings, increased appetite, fluid retention, moodiness, poor concentration,
skin breakouts and headaches can be managed easily with natural medicines. ‘PMS is definitely a condition that is easy to treat with herbs, nutrients and acupuncture’ says Patricia. ‘I often use combinations of herbs, vitamins, minerals and nutrients in ways that suit each individual. After all your PMS symptoms may often vary from those of the girl next door.’ Diet is also important in the management of this dreadful monthly annoyance. A diet high in fresh fruit, vegetables, essential fatty acids and lean protein sources provides essential phytonutrients, antioxidants and magnesium. Foods that can contribute to hormone imbalances such as non-organic poultry, dairy, red meats, sugar, white flour and refined foods should be eliminated whilst the detoxifying foods such as beets, carrot, yams, garlic, dark leafy greens, lemons and apples are definitely worthwhile including. A high fibre diet is also essential in obtaining hormone health. Patricia also encourages the use of stress management techniques, such as yoga, meditation and exercise. If you want to control your hormones rather than letting them control your life, please give Patricia a call today for more information on how to create a healthy monthly cycle and hormonal balance. You can contact her at Ferny Chiropractic on 3351 0933 or visit www. patriciamcnab.com.au

What Are Iyengar Wall Ropes?
Claire Tierney - Owner of Yogasol, demonstrates the Camel pose using the Iyengar Wall Ropes The ropes will take your Yoga Asana practice to the next level, as they assist your body to hinge and create movement that may have been limited for you in the past. When using the ropes you will gain a deeper understanding of Alignment and mobility, through the proprioperception and total support that the rope provides. As the ropes take your body weight, previous poses that may have been challenging will be much easier and with the rope supporting your body you will be able to find a new depth to your pose. Under the safe supervision of the instructors at Yoga Sol you may find yourself in an inverted position without the need of strong core control or balance. It has long been considered 'by the Yogis' to be of great benefit to take time upside down. Hanging from the rope or just being able to support yourself with ease in Down Dog can give you all these benefits which include: • Increasing Circulation and assisting the return of Venous Blood back to the heart. In other words giving the heart a bit of a rest. • Supporting the elimination of the Lymphatic System. • Anti Ageing • Releasing pressure from gravitational pull upon the spine and other joints of the body. Which in turn can help with degenerative conditions of the spine and or joints. Releasing pain symptoms from chronic conditions. • Brings deeper concentration and focus through increased blood into the brain. • Creates a greater ability to relax the monkey mind and switch off the chitter chatter of the brain. • Improves balance and spacial awareness. • Combates staved self belief and fear. • Inversions can help reduce anxiety, depression and create a deeper more restful sleep. You may chose to take a class or book in for a one on one session with the ropes. For more information please call 0406 692 9891 www.hillsecho.com
