Monster Event in Blackwood Street
Ghosts, ghouls, witches and perhaps even a family of Flintstones! These are just some of the sights you will find down at the 2019 Blackwood Street Halloween Festival on Sunday 27th October in Mitchelton.
The annual community festival is one of the most popular - and definitely the spookiest - events to take place on the northside of Brisbane with over 5000 children and adults expected to participate this year. The Rotary Club of Mitchelton will again coordinate the event in conjunction with the Brisbane City Council, who is the major sponsor. Blackwood Street, betw een Samford Road and Grovely Terrace, will close to car traffic between 3pm and 7pm on Sunday 27th October and the street will be transformed into a veritable playground of free entertainment. There will be something for all the family including childrens games, entertainers, live music, market stalls, face painting, a sensational The Flintstone Family from the 2018 Watermelon Eating Blackwood Street Halloween festival. Competition, plus so

much more!! Organisers are also excited to introduce a new attraction this year, which will see the construction of a Haunted House. It promises to be hugely popular with the kids! There will also be awards for the Scariest and Best Costume so get your thinking cap on to what costume you might adorn. So venture if you dare, and ‘Trick-or-Treat’ your way through the local businesses and market stalls. For more information visit the Facebook event page www. facebook.com/events/642191616223429/

An Event For Every Age
AIM students with Ferny Grove State School primary students, residents from Keperra Sanctuary Aged Care, teachers and Principal of Ferny Grove High School, Mr Schuh. This term, the Ferny Grove State High School AIM (Activate, Innovate, Motivate) classes have been working together to create an event that they could host for their community organisations. The classes, who have been working with both Ferny Grove State School and Keperra Sanctuary Aged Care, decided to host a tea next to the school’s agricultural farm. The students planned the entire event which included games, activities, food, refreshments and music, all the way down to the invitations that were sent out to everyone involved. It was a huge success for the Year 10, 11 and 12 AIM students. The Primary School students loved the activities and the food, whilst the ‘Oldies’ enjoyed the parkland setting, fresh cups of coffee and tea whilst chatting to the students. It was all capped off with a fun rendition of ‘Old McDonald Had a Farm’ where Ferny Grove State High School Principal, Mr Schuh, could be seen waving his arms like a chicken and modelling to the students how to enjoy the moment. A day to be remembered by all!

Shopping Spree Anyone?
The Brisbane City Council Cabs service organises shared taxis at scheduled times for residents who find it difficult to get to their local shops. You can use Council Cabs if you are over 60 years old, mobility impaired or hold a Pensioner Concession Card or Centrelink Seniors Card. If you are eligible to use this service, you may be accompanied by a carer or a child under your care. To make sure there is room for everyone, shopping is limited to five regular plastic bags or three recycled bags per passenger. The Council Cab operates weekly in most Brisbane City Council suburbs. In some areas, services are offered twice a week. The service picks you up from your home and takes you to your local shopping centre. Each one-way trip costs between $1 and $3. To book a Council Cabs service, phone 3403 2227. For more information visit www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/trafficand-transport/public-transport/ council-cabs

The Hills Players It’s almost Showtime!
Lego Lovers Rejoice!
There’s a new store coming to town
We were so excited here at The Hills Echo to learn that Brisbane’s first LEGO® Certified Store is coming to Westfield Chermside!
The Hills Players final production for 2019, ‘Good Help is So Hard to Murder’ by Pat Cook, will open on Friday 1st November. The production is arranged through Origin Theatrical. This humorous play will continue for three more shows on the 2nd, 8th and 9th November at St Matthews Church Hall, Church Road, Mitchelton. The play, set in the deep south of the USA, tells the story of Mirabelle and her sister Delilah who is a little concerned about how much the maid, Libby, knows about the family secrets. Local police officer, Judy, is keeping her eyes on the sisters, while visits from neighbors Elmira and Florence, as well as the sisters' Aunt Minnie, are sure to create some trouble. If only Socrates the Parrot would learn when to keep his beak shut! This play promises to give the audiences a fun and lighthearted evening of entertainment. For bookings please call us on 3351 4496 or 3355 7319 or email margie.reid@bigpond. com
The store is scheduled to open before the end of the year just in time for Christmas and will showcase some intriguing design features such as brick built mosaics, 3D models of local icons, interactive brick experiences, ‘Pick a Brick’ Walls, Build-Your-Own Mini- figure stations, custom LEGO brick engraving plus so much more. Stay tuned as they build this innovative store brick by brick by following Westfield Chermside on Facebook at www. facebook.com/WestfieldChermside/

Samford State School Headed in Right Direction
Students and teachers at Samford State School are navigating a new course outside the classroom, integrating the sport of orienteering into their physical education program. For the past two years students have participated in orienteering coaching, provided by Orienteering Queensland, as part of the Government’s Sporting Schools Program. This year over a period of seven weeks, 88 Year Four students have learnt the skills of map reading, navigation and translating what they see on the map to what they see around them. Armed with these skills the students then embarked on orienteering courses around the school grounds aiming to successfully find all the checkpoints in the fastest time. In their recent Over 8’s activity day, Samford State School students from all grades enjoyed a condensed form of orienteering called Grid-O, involving navigation between 16 check points on a 20m x 20m grid. Helping the students were Samford State School teachers, Ann Power and Jannice Shackleton who have become Level O orienteering coaches through Orienteering Queensland. Both teachers commented on the inclusivity of the sport, which allows people of all ages, experience and abilities to participate at their own pace. Samford State School is also participating in the orienteering program being offered for the first time as part of North West District Interschool Sport. During a 12 week competition held on Friday afternoons, over 250 students from five local schools complete orienteering courses around a series of local parks. Samford State School have a 65 strong contingent of students attending, the second largest in the competition. Orienteering is not a totally new sport at Samford State School. Past student Krystal Neumann is currently representing Australia in the World Orienteering Championships being held in Norway. Neumann (26) has represented Australia at both the junior and senior levels nine times over the past 11 years. Her cousin Jack Neumann (23) who is also a past Samford State School student, represents Queensland in the national orienteering competition and is involved in managing Queensland's representative schools team. Orienteering Queensland runs many events across south-east Queensland and in regional areas. Newcomers are welcome at all events and coaching is available. More information at https://oq.orienteering.asn.au/ or email admin@oq.org.au

The FM Class is one of a kind
Monthly news from the Brisbane Tramway Museum and the Ferny Grove Men’s Shed
The Brisbane Tramway Museum has a variety of trams on display such as this FM Class In the late 1930s and early 1940s, the latest Brisbane trams were hailed worldwide as leaders in design. This was the FM Class—so named because for the first time, trams had ‘Four Motors (FM)’ instead of the usual one at each end. The Brisbane City Council started building this class in 1938 and over 150 were built over the following three decades. Together with their predecessors—the ‘Drop Centres’—these became the backbone of Brisbane’s growing tram fleet. They carried 110 passengers (as did the Drop Centres), of which 64 were seated. The design featured sharply curved ends to facilitate passing on curves, air brakes, windup/down windows and canvas doors/blinds at each entrance. With the 4 motors in operation, these trams were quite fast and folk-lore has it that one left Chermside Terminus (where the major shopping centre is located) and arrived at Light Street
Depot (in Wickham Street about 1 kilometre beyond the Valley Baths) in just 11 minutes! The museum has the very first FM to be built, Tram #400 which is still undergoing restoration and 429 which sees regular service on our normal open days. Several other trams of this model are in the museums storage shed. The Tram Simulator is up and running technically, and Men’s Shed members are building the driving cabin in which it will be installed. Soon, the Men of The Forest will recommence the upgrading of the museum’s gardens, planting species which would have been native to our land years ago. The museum has recently played host to the local SES group for their Chain-Saw accreditation program. Being well away from houses, the noise factor was no problem on the grounds. The museum would like to have more crew members being trained. Anyone interested can contact the museum on 3351 1776. The museum is open to the public every Sunday afternoon from 12.30pm (weather permitting). Tickets are Adult $14, Concession $11, Children $7 and Family $42 and providing unlimited rides on six different trams.

Sure-footed Saffron strides to nationals
Running isn’t for everyone. However, for St Andrew’s Primary School student, Safforn Jenkinson, running is in her blood and she is striding to success in the disciplines of Cross Country and Track and Field.
At only ten years of age, Ferny Hills local, Safforn, has already represented Queensland in the Australian Cross Country Championships. The competition took place last month in Wollongong and she finished sixth in the 10 year old girls’ 2km race. Notably, she was the first Queensland girl across the line, helping the Queensland 10 year old girls finish third overall on points, to claim the bronze medal. To add to Saffron’s accolades, she was also chosen to run for Queensland in the 10 year old girls relay (5 x 1000m) at the same championships. Outstandingly, the girls finished third to claim another Bronze medal. Saffron’s achievements have been recognised by many in the sport. Last month she traveled to Darwin to represent Queensland in the Australian 10-12 Years Track and Field Championships. She raced in the 800m against some of the best 10 year old middle distance runners in Australia and achieved an outstanding sixth place in the finals! Saffron looks set for a blossoming future, however the costs associated with attending such high profile competitions can be enormous. Her parents have set up a fundraising page to assist with traveling costs at https://asf.org.au/athletes/saffronjenkinson-to-national-track-and-field-championships/. Saffron in action at the Australian If any locals would like to make a tax-deductible donation to support Saffron it would be much appreciated by the family. Cross Country Championships

Time to celebrate at Arana Netball
FORMAL HIRE CLOSING DOWN SALE! ON NOW!

Life members, Jenna Hodgkiss, Brianna Streeter and Gemma Streeter
The 7th of September saw the final round of netball for 2019, the Grand Finals.
Arana was represented by four teams on Grand Final day; Arana 4, Arana 5, Arana 7 and Arana 9. The girls played hard and the sidelines were alive with positive cheer. Two teams came away with wins to be proud of - Arana 4 and Arana 9, the Grand Final Winners for 2019. Arana Netball Club wasted no time in celebrating their season with their players, members and families. They gathered eagerly at the Gaythorne Bowls club on the 14th September, proudly displaying their red, white and black. The stories of the season flowed freely, new friendships were celebrated, players and members were acknowledged for their contribution to their teams and to their club. It was a night filled with pride - panther pride. From the youngest player at seven years old, through to the inaugural Masters Team, each player bought their own fire to their team. The room was filled with cheers all night for players and members. Arana Netball Club would like to especially acknowledge our Hills Echo award winner for 2019. This player has demonstrated the ‘Positive or its Pointless’ values and has been recognised for their contribution to Arana Netball Club during 2019 Congratulations Nicola Rzepka. Nicola played in Arana 5 and has been umpiring for a couple of years. This year, Nicola really stepped up in regards to umpiring and tackling higher divisions, including opens divisions. Through her umpiring and playing, Nicola constantly displayed the ‘Positive or its Pointless’ values - a challenging role sometimes when umpiring and having to control the game but also managing the behaviour of players and spectators. Nicola volunteered to fill gaps in the umpiring roster at short notice even when it meant being out of her comfort zone. She also had the initiative to ask for assistance and mentoring when she felt out of her depth. This is a mature attribute at her age. Well done Nicola! Finally, the club would like to thank their life members, Jenna Hodgkiss, Brianna Streeter and Gemma Streeter for everything they do for Arana Netball Club. In addition, a big thanks goes out to their players, umpires, coaches, committee members, mums, daughters, sisters and friends! Arana Netball looks forward to welcoming players interested in playing in the 2020 season to their FREE netball clinic. The clinic is run on Monday evenings from the 14th october to the 11th November. Visit their Facebook page for more information or contact arananetballregistrar@gmail.com. Serenata’s Gonna Sing
Get on the Garage Sale Trail!
I t ’s s e t t o b e t h e biggest garage sale in Australian history and everyone in the Moreton Bay Region is invited!
Serenata Singers in full throat at their 2018 Gala Concert.
The Serenata Singers are busy preparing for their annual gala concert to be held on Saturday 2nd November at The Gap Uniting Church Auditorium.
The concert is a highly anticipated annual event and follows on the heels of last year’s successful concert, which commemorated the 100th anniversary of the end of WWI. It takes place in the lead up to next year’s concert that will celebrate the choir’s 50th anniversary. As usual, the concert is co-sponsored by the choir and Ashgrove/The Gap Lions Club, with proceeds aiding the choir and the Lions Medical Research Foundation. The theme for this year’s concert is ‘I’m Gonna Sing’. Choir musical director Lois Cutmore commented that the choir has developed a very interesting program to illustrate the many different styles and moods of choral music. This includes, among others, medleys of songs from the legendary American song writers George and Ira Gershwin, John Denver, the classic Broadway musicals West Side Story and Oklahoma, Gilbert and Sullivan and Disney’s The Lion King. The concert will also feature a rousing rendition of the traditional African-American spiritual, I’m Gonna Sing, which lends its name to the concert’s title. ‘That song has to be one of the most joyous and exuberant songs of praise ever written,’ said Lois. At the time of going to press, guest artists for the concert were still to be confirmed. Serenata Singers Annual Gala Concert will take place on Saturday 2nd November at the Uniting Church Auditorium, 1050 Waterworks Road, The Gap. The concert commences at 7.30pm. Tickets, which are available at the door, are Adults - $25, Seniors/Concessions - $20, School students - $10. A supper will be provided. Local households, schools and community groups will join over 400,000 people across the country on Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th October for the ninth annual Garage Sale Trail. Council spokesperson for Asset Construction and Maintenance, Cr Adam Hain, said it was multi award-winning community and sustainability event. ‘Garage Sale Trail is supported by over 140 local councils nation-wide,’ he said. ‘It’s expected that this year’s weekend-long event will be the best attended yet, and it’s definitely a fun way to stop waste going to landfill. ‘Afterall, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure and by getting involved you’ll be helping to educate kids and our community about the impact we can all make when we buy secondhand. The Garage Sale Trail weekend also provides a way to meet your neighbours, connect with your community and declutter the house - while raising money for charity or yourself. Last year on average: • Household garage sales made $309. • Participants connected with 46 local people. • More than 500kgs of stuff was sold and re-distributed at each garage sale. Event organisers project that more than 2 million items will be listed for sale and reuse. Registration is free. Serving up a good dose of community spirit
Last month, The Hills Echo team set the alarm clock early and headed down to The Hills Community Breakfast Club to discover a bit more about this free community breakfast that is being served up twice a week in Arana Hills.
The Hills Community Breakfast Club is a collaboration between local business TaxArana, the Picabeen Community Centre and the Older Women’s Network (OWNQ). The initiative is designed to help support our most vulnerable community members, through not only providing a warm meal, but offering access to support and information. It is also an opportunity for socially struggling people within our community to engage and connect with others. Steve Brett, owner of TaxArana, was inspired to start this breakfast club after hearing of the good work that is happening in the Redcliffe area where a community breakfast has been supporting up to 50 people each morning. ‘I was inspired by the people who run the Redcliffe Breakfast Club and I began to wonder if there was a need for a similar need for assistance for homeless and disadvantaged people in the Arana Hills area,’ said Steve. Pam Kingsford-Smith and Ann Gadsby from the While it is difficult to accurately pinpoint the number of people who are Older Women’s Network serving up a storm at The currently homeless in our region, Picabeen Community Centre has revealed Hills Community Breakfast Club. that there has been a significant increase in the number of people who are presenting at their centre who have become homeless in recent months. Homelessness is not a choice and can be the result of many social and economic factors, such as domestic violence, addictions, physical or mental health and loss of employment. To date, the organisers of The Breakfast Club have been overwhelmed with the influx of support from the community. One example is the Golden Valley Keperra Lions Club, who have offered to help out financially to fund the food along with offering volunteers to cook up the BBQ. ‘We would not have been able to bring it all together without the assistance of the Lions, Picabeen and the Older Womens Network,’ said Steve. The Hills Community Breakfast Club takes place in TaxArana’s front garden on the corner of Glenlee Street and Dawson Parade every Tuesday and Friday from 6:30am to 8am. If you have a business that would like to help out as a produce sponsor or if you would like to volunteer with the weekly breakfasts, please contact Steve on 3351 6111 or email info@taxarana.com

News from the Samford Museum
Samford Valley’s past attractions Decades ago, Samford was home to a variety of tourist
attractions. There was Adventureland, Samford Valley Riding Centre, The Pines, Samford Valley Country and Golf Club, Go Kart Track, Bobsled and Grass Ski. Samford Valley Riding Centre was in Reiners Road in the late 1980s to early 1990s. Glen Dawson, also known as ‘Smokey’, was the owner and Malcolm Smith was his general hand. Opposite to the riding centre was Samford Valley Country and Golf Club. Moonlight rides and two-day Escape Rides through Brisbane Forest Park to Fernvale were very popular. Going on the moonlight rides up House Mountain along the fire trails on full moon nights was magic. You could see the sparks coming from the shoes of horses in front as they climbed. Brisbane’s lights were also very clear from this vantage point. Back at the centre there was a bar built with bush timber and corrugated iron. Visitors could sit on logs around the camp fire for a sing-along and yarned, sometimes until early morning. Well signposted trails within the property ensured a rider could safely take a lone ride. Smokey organised an Ironman competition at Samford Show. Each competitor had to lie on the ground in his swag and when it was time to go he had to jump up, put on his boots, catch his horse and then jump two obstacles. There were two stations to get to. At the first, the competitor had to eat a cold pie; at the second, drink a hot stubbie that had been sitting in the sun, before jumping back on his horse. As they went over the last hay bale they had to crack the whip. Prize money was donated and awarded by Smokey. If any readers have memories of visiting or photos of any of the attractions mentioned above, Samford Museum would love to hear from you. You can get in touch via email at info@samfordmuseum. com.au or visit the museum on Wednesdays or Sundays from 10am - 4pm. www.hillsecho.com

Local Tennis Club welcomes new courts
The official opening of the two new tennis courts at Samford Tennis Club was a huge success and enjoyed by all who attended.
Robert Harvey, President of the Samford Tennis Club, welcomed the completion of two new tennis courts for the club’s 600 members.
The two courts were officially opened on the 23rd September by The Honorable Peter Dutton (Federal Member of Dickson, Minister of Home Affairs), Ms Nikki Boyd (State Member for Pine Rivers) and Councillor Darren Grimwade (Division 11, MBRC). ‘The Club is grateful for the grants, rebates, loan and support provided by Federal, State and Local Government, and Tennis Queensland/Tennis Australia,’ said Mr Harvey. ‘I also pay tribute to current and past committee members who have worked so hard to make this happen.’
The two new courts are a welcome addition to this local Club that has experienced growth in recent years. There is now a total of six tournament-grade courts at Samford Parklands, and the Club now has the ability to host regional tournaments and attract even more players. An added bonus is the addition of LED lights that will improve lighting as well as allowing the Club to save on ongoing electricity costs. The Club’s six hardcourt and two synthetic grass courts are also available for hire by members and the general public. The Club offers in-house fixtures, social tennis, superleague fixtures and coaching sessions for people of all ages. For more information, p l e a s e v i s i t w w w. samfordtennis.net

Cluttered environment = cluttered mind
Whether you believe one man’s trash is another man’s treasure, are a passionate up-cycler or subscribe to Marie Kondo’s life changing art of tidying up – there will be something for everyone at Pine Rivers Private Hospital’s upcoming Rummage Sale. The sale, to be held on the 12th October, forms part of Mental Health Week and aims to raise awareness of the therapeutic benefits of de-cluttering - as well as bagging a bargain. “De-cluttering enables one to let go of past items no longer needed or helpful to keep, and no longer holding on to things that may or may not be relevant to a future not yet lived,” said Julie Huntington, Allied Health Manager. “At Pine Rivers Private Hospital we teach techniques in Mindfulness and a mindful focus is a present focus, therefore de-cluttering involves re-assessing what is needed right now. “We should all ask the question, is it helpful to hold on to these items, or does doing so create pressure or distress in the current moment?” Pine Rivers staff have embraced the sale and have been donating items of clothing, small furniture and children’s toys. Community members can also donate items for the sale. All proceeds will be donated to a mental health charity.
“We would like to invite those from the community to come and support this event, have a free breakfast on us and hopefully pick up a few personal treasures to create their own memories,” said Robyn Carrington, Business Development Manager and Coordinator of the event. The rummage sale will open from 7:30am at Pine Rivers Private Hospital. For more information visit, Pine Rivers’ Facebook event page – Pine Rivers Private 2019 Mental Health Day.

Stress in the 21st Century
What is it and why is it important to address?
With Integrative Pharmacist – Jacqui Hagidimitriou
One of the most common problems that I am asked to help with in my consultations, is the impact that stress has on our day to day lives. Stress can be defined as a state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or demanding circumstances. Or more simply put, stress is pressure placed upon us in either a physical or psychological way. It is vital that our body and mind can adapt to stress from our environment, otherwise we will crumble under the pressure. Too often in our modern-day world, stress comes in the form of mental, rather than physical pressures. Are you always running to appointments, eating on the go (opting for fast meals that keep hunger at bay, but do little to nourish your body), feeling like your heart is always racing… Knowing your mind is always racing or getting impatient on your drive in traffic and getting angry at little things? These can all be signs of leading a life where stress is getting the better of you! What does this do to our body and mind? It keeps us in a state of fight or flight. The inbuilt way that we are designed to respond to a physical threat, that gets us out of danger. Picture this – a gigantic beast suddenly appears in your office, growling and bearing their teeth (and no, I’m not talking about your boss) What will you do? You will do one of two things. Either weigh up your options for tackling the beast and surviving, or scan the room for exits to be able to flee! You will do this automatically, by your brain switching on your sympathetic nervous system. This nervous system is not as kind as it sounds. It doesn’t make you a cup of tea and listen to your stories, it makes you
release a stress chemical - adrenaline - into your bloodstream. This causes your heart to beat harder and faster, your pupils dilate to take in all the details of the approaching threat and your muscles and liver release sugar into your bloodstream. This ensures that you can run, fight and use the strength you need to escape the situation. Sounds great, right? If you were outsmarting the office beast, then yes. However, what if the threat is work deadlines, relationship strains and financial burdens. Those kind of pressures don’t just get defeated with the swipe of a mighty adrenaline fueled arm. They take time, planning and structure to defeat, reducing the pressure we feel on our body and mind. Long Term Stress The problem occurs when this stress response is almost unrelenting and continuous. When our body thinks these threats are the same as the physical threat and causes the same changes in our body chemistry as if we needed to run for our lives, it can cause us health problems in the long term. This stress response is supposed to be short-lived – to get us out of immediate danger. However, we are living lives that are filled with continual stress triggers. We need to find a way to slow our sympathetic nervous system down, so that our body and mind can have times where we are feeling safe, out of danger and relaxed. This is when we can repair and restore our body and mind and is crucial for our health and wellbeing. An app that catches those sneaky UV rays
You can’t use temperature or cloudless skies to determine UV levels, but an advanced tool from SunSmart is here to help. To help us better determine invisible UV risk, SunSmart has developed an app with Deakin University’s Software and Technology Innovation Laboratory, called seeUV. The app uses augmented reality and realtime data from The Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) and the Bureau of Meteorology to give users a visual expression of sunburn risk and hidden UV rays in your environment. It also alerts users when the UV rating reaches dangerous levels. A UV Index reading of three to five signifies moderate risk of harm from unprotected sun exposure. At this level people are advised to stay in shade during the middle of the day when the sun is strongest. The seeUV app also has a selfie mode that uses the same augmented reality technology to generate the long-term consequences of UV damage on a person‘s skin, such as premature ageing, wrinkles and sunspots. As your sunburn or tan fades, it can be hard to imagine how exactly it has affected your DNA. Especially as – for most of us – we won’t see the damage come to the surface of our skin for another decade or so. However, this clever app exposes us
Page 28 - October 2019, The Hills Echo
to the potential damage the UV rays may cause. This is a free app and is available from Google Play for Android and the Apple App Store.
Stay Safe in the Sun
Brisbane is known as the Skin Cancer Capital of the world. With more than 1300 Australians dying each year from skin cancer, one in two Australians will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. Education, prevention and early detection are the keys to reducing your risks of skin cancer. The biggest cause of skin cancer is too much ultraviolet (UV) radiation, usually from sunlight. Even mild sunburn can cause lasting damage to normal skin. You can be exposed to dangerous levels of UV even in winter. The risk of skin cancer increases as we get older. People with fair skin, which burns easily, or those with natural red or blond hair are potentially at greater risk of skin cancer. So too are those with many moles or a family history of skin cancer or a weakened immune system. Every change in a mole is potentially an alarm signal. If you notice any of the following changes, we recommend you book in for a skin check with a Skin Cancer doctor: change in colour; irregular edges; a change in the surrounding skin such as reddening, itching or an odd sensation, scaling, roughness or bleeding; a sore that doesn’t heal; a mole that bleeds or new moles especially when occurring after 25 years of age. Stay SunSmart. Lowering your risk of skin cancer can be as simple as avoiding long exposure to intense sunlight and practicing sun safety. And get your skin checked for summer!

Is dried mango as healthy as fresh mango?
Dried mango is a true tropical delight! This treat lets you enjoy the luscious, sweet taste of real mangoes anytime and anywhere. Rich in vitamin A, B-complex vitamins, dietary fiber, and antioxidants, dried mangoes can be a wonderfully healthy addition to your diet. However, although dried mango may be a convenient alternative to fresh mango, it is significantly higher in sugar and calories. Dried mango packs over 300 calories per 80g portion (compared to 53 calories in 80g of fresh mango), and over four times the amount of sugar, at 63g per 80g portion. Although dried mango does have have many benefits, it is always wise to watch your portion size and perhaps opt for fresh mango where possible.
Being active can add years to your life and life to your years!
Think of all the activities you loved as a child. Playing with others always made you feel good, didn’t it? Whatever your age, when you move more you feel better. This is because your body releases endorphins, which are a natural mood booster. You can decompress, relieve stress, or work out your frustrations with every little movement. It seems that every week there’s new research recommending strength training and resistance exercise for prevention, management and recovery. Weight control, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes prevention and management can all be supported. Stronger muscles and bones, more flexible joints and prevention of cancers, osteoporosis and management of joint pain are also supported by healthy lifestyle choices. Your immune system and emotional health benefit as sleep quality improves, allowing the body to heal and restore. Health experts around the world now recommend 150 minutes of moderateintensity activity per week (i.e. 30 minutes, 5 times per week), plus muscle strengthening activity that involves all major muscle groups 2 or more times per week. So how do you move forward? Curves is the perfect match! Empower yourself by building strength, which will tone your muscles. Getting toned can make you feel younger, look better and stand taller. Now that’s worth the work! For a personal consultation and assessment, phone 3354 4455 or visit Curves Mitchelton on Facebook. www.hillsecho.com
Is your current hayfever medication letting you down?
Hayfever is one of the most common allergic conditions, and its effects are felt by more than a quarter of Australians. The symptoms of the allergies of hayfever are wide ranging, from puffy eyes to itchy throat and are highly variable depending on local weather and environmental conditions. They even extend beyond physical effects and a sudden bout of hayfever can leave you feeling miserable and unwilling to venture outside, even on the sunniest spring days. What many hayfever and allergy suffers don’t realise is that relief could just be round the corner. To help understand and better manage your allegies, Guardian has developed a Hayfever Survival Guide, designed to bring fast effective relief to hayfever sufferers. It’s free and easy to complete and will only take 10 minutes of your time. Most importantly, it could help you reclaim your spring - no more declining invitations to outdoor picnics or BBQ’s. Simply pop in and see the friendly team at Patricks Road Pharmacy, Ferny Fair Shopping Centre, 170 Patricks Road, Ferny Hills. They will run you through it, no appointment needed!

COUNSELLOR’S COLUMN with Robin Botic
Dear Robin, Recently my son and daughter in law had their second child. I took some photos and texted them to his father (now my ex husband). A few days, later my ex-husband Dan rang me to thank me for the photos. Unbeknownst to me, John, my son, and Dan have had a severe falling out. Dan said that he had tried to communicate with John to sort things out but was told by John to never contact him again. He had tried to call and write but has been cut dead each time. Dan was crying and very upset that John has cut him out of his life, and he said that although he appreciated my thoughtfulness, not to send him any photos in the future as he finds it too painful to be reminded of his grandchildren and what he is missing out on. This apparently happened six months ago and although my son really does not talk about his father with me. I am very surprised that he has not mentioned this. I tried to get a feel of how things were by asking if he had seen his father recently. He answered with a very abrupt NO, said he had to go and hung up. I feel really saddened by this, even though there is no love loss between my ex and myself. I feel for him, my son and my grandchildren. Should I try further to intercede on my ex’s behalf or just shut my mouth? Jen Dear Jen, Your ex has to sort it out with your son. It is not your place to intercede. Don’t get yourself in the middle; you will only get sandwiched badly. It is generous and thoughtful of you to consider everyone’s
feelings, but your ex is just that. Even if you were still married to him, it would be Dan and John’s joint responsibility to sort it out. Your son’s reaction to your query about his father and his prior silence on the subject are indicative of where he is at with it. He does not want to talk about it and your forcing of the issue may reap the whirlwind. He may in time come of his own accord and want to talk to you about it. If he does that is a different matter. Listen, don’t judge or suggest. Let him talk for as long as he needs to. Show you are listening by direct eye contact and affirmative noises. Let him vent, then when he has wound down you may be able to encourage greater reflectivity in him by putting things he has talked about back to him in question format. For example – if he is – ‘it appears to me that you are pretty upset by this?’; ‘what do you want to do about it?’; ‘why was that so upsetting for you?’; ‘do you think your father is very upset by this?’; ‘is this how you want it to be between you?’; ‘can you get over how or what was said and agree to differ?’ etc. When you pose these questions to him, do it gently and softly and wait till he replies before asking further questions. In this way you may help him to self-process more deeply. This may lead to a change in attitude on his behalf. However, if he just becomes more reactionary, LET IT GO – ‘I can see this is really upsetting for you, maybe we should talk about something else etc. Use all of the above if he does approach you about it. Otherwise for your sake and the rules of engagement it is about a lesson in shutting our mouths, letting go and accepting that this is what it is and as hard as it is, there is not much we can do about it. Robin

It has been a busy month for the club with twenty members traveling to Bullockys Rest at Lake Samsonvale where they enjoyed lunch in the beautiful setting. Years ago, the area was used as a camp for the bullock teams hauling timber from Cooyar to Toowoomba. Nowadays, it has a waterbird habitat, and visitors make use of picnic areas, walking trails and some fishing. Another outing took place later in the month to Summerland Camel farm which was a huge success. The guest speaker at the September meeting was Jenni Guise, who delivered a talk about the activities on Millen Farm at Samford which was enjoyed by all.

The Ferny Report
by Mark Furner M.P. State Member for Ferny Grove
Mark Furner M.P. with gentlemen from the Arana Hills Men’s Shed on a visit to Queensland Parliament.
Would you like to see bunting banned at election time?
Every election there seems to be more signage and bunting along every fence line as far as the eye can see. I have noticed myself the amount of plastic waste after every election seems to be out of control and getting worse. When you walk into a polling station it can be difficult to even figure out where to actually vote because of the riot of colours and slogans – to say nothing of finding the P&C sausage sizzle half-hidden behind an obnoxious billboard. The Attorney-General Yvette D’Ath has suggested getting rid of bunting altogether and limiting signage to two A-frames per candidate at each entrance to a polling station and at pre-polls. I strongly support these proposed changes – but I am keen to hear from you so please email my office at ferny.grove@ parliament.qld.gov.au to let me know what you think about these proposed changes. I will be happy to provide your feedback to the Attorney General. To fill in the survey go to: https://bit.ly/2ku067h.
Ferny Grove community groups share in over $100,000
Round 101 of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund has been announced with Ferny Grove Electorate groups awarded over $100,000 in one-off funding. Volunteer groups are the backbone of our community and the benefits of these grants to local organisations are invaluable. The Round 101 recipients included GVK Lions and Westside Sports Club among others. The Fund provides one-off grants of up to $35,000 for projects which would otherwise be very difficult for some groups to finance. Round 103 is open until 31 October for all registered not-for-profit groups in the Ferny Grove Electorate.
Arana Hills Men’s Shed Queensland Parliament Visit
I had the great pleasure of recently hosting the Arana Hills Men’s Shed for a visit to Queensland Parliament. Brisbane turned on typically delightful late winter weather for the day and the blokes had an interesting time checking out the heritage-listed building and century-old fixtures before heading up to the riverside deck for a BBQ.
