NATIONAL RECYCLING WEEK

On Thursday, 1st December, the last 2016 meeting of the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club will be held at the Enoggera Memorial Hall, corner of Wardell and Trundle Streets, Enoggera. This meeting will consist of end of year activities including presentation of prizes to successful exhibitors for 2016, and other entertainment. Attendance is for members only or for those who receive a formal invitation. After that, the club will go into recess for the Christmas - New Year holidays and the next meeting will be held on the 2nd February 2017. During the current year there has been a good attendance of visitors and members, and a welcome is extended to those visitors to register as members in February 2017 if they wish, as vacancies for new members still exist. November is the month to prune Azaleas and spring flowering shrubs. A hard pruning will rejuvenate old woody plants, while tip pruning will promote terminal growth of younger plants. Healthy new growth will result from an application of an appropriate fertilizer accompanied by mulch and a good watering. If herbs, vegetables and summer flowering annuals are given a seaweed solution at regular intervals, their resistance to heat stress and fungal diseases will increase. Lawns need attention at this time too. Deep watering once a week will encourage the roots of the lawn to travel down into the soil. Also light applications of lawn fertilizers each month will help keep the lawn in a good condition. Meetings are held on the first Thursday of the calendar month, except January. Morning tea is served at 9.45 a.m. before the meeting commences at 10 a.m. The hall is close to public transport and is accessible by wheelchair. For more information please phone the president, Pat, on

7 - 13 NOVEMBER

Did you know we each dispose of more than two tonnes of waste per year? That’s the weight of two small cars. National Recycling Week is a great chance to consider what we use in our home and office, and to look at ways to reduce what we send to landfill. Small changes like shopping weekly and reusing shopping bags or water bottles can help reduce the amount of waste we produce and can make a difference to our environment. To celebrate National Recycling Week 2016 council will host: Free Recycling Workshops Saturday, 12 November 2016, 10-11am Treasure Market - Dakabin Waste Facility Transform used items into artistic pieces for your home or workplace. Bookings essential. Free Mulch and Mulch Loading Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 November 2016, 9am-12noon Waste Facility: Bunya, Caboolture, Dakabin and Redcliffe Bring a trailer and council will load your mulch for free.

Umoja Children’s Home Update from Mitchelton Rotary Club

Through the fund raising efforts of Mitchelton Rotary some months ago the construction of the orphaned children’s home was completed and the first five children moved in on July 30th. This was exactly 5 years after Cathy Booth, the founder, started on the long journey to build a secure environment for at risk children in Kenya, while working full time as a teacher in Bundaberg. While the children’s home has been completed there is still a lot to do to enable the home to perform its function satisfactorily. More infrastructure has to be built or purchased— a generator to power refrigerators when mains power goes off line, which happens regularly; shade cloth to protect the vegetable crops from the hot sun or torrential rain etc. The crops are for use in the home. Any excess will be sold to tourist hotels to help with the running cost of the home. A priority cost is the wages of $2500 per month. The running costs could be met if a sufficient number of benefactors are prepared to donate a small amount each month or are prepared to sponsor a child. There are 5 children being cared for at the home—Edna, Kaingu, Duncan and twins Alexis and Alare. The twin’s father was in the Kenyan army and was killed in action in Somalia fighting Islamic extremists. Their mother was unable to cope with nowhere to live and no income. She had many times threatened to kill the twins and the Kenyan Children’s Department stepped in and asked Umoja to become legal guardians. The manager of the home, Patrick is the legal guardian of all the children in the home. Kenya has no government scheme of assistance for war widows and there is no RSL or Legacy to support the families of soldiers killed in action. For the amount of $3.28 per day or $1,200 per annum you can support a child at Umoja. The organisation would appreciate any donation you are able to make. Donations can be made to the RAWCS (Rotary Australia World Community Service) website which is managing the finances of the home. https://donations.rawcs.com.au/Default. aspx?ProjectID=593&ReturnTo=4 Donations can also be made at the Mitchelton Rotary club stand at Jan Power’s Family Markets held in Blackwood Street, Mitchelton on the first Sunday of the month.

Acupuncture and IVF Improving the Odds

One of the changes occurring in our society is that women are having children later in life. IVF and other Assisted Reproductive Techniques are growing by up to 15% annually in Australia. The Research Centre for Reproductive Health located at the University of Adelaide has been studying the use of Acupuncture in IVF. Professor Rob Norman and Doctor Caroline Smith have conducted a study using acupuncture during the IVF cycle. Professor Norman’s results correlate with those of other studies done around the world – an increase in the pregnancy rate of 50%. Acupuncture and Herbal Medicines have been used for thousands of years in China and according to local Acupuncturist, Patricia McNab, many local women (and men) are opting for this interesting treatment. Patricia treats women and men of all ages for fertility problems – many of these patients are using IVF. ‘Acupuncture treats the whole body – not just the egg or the sperm, and this is part of the reason that such an interesting form of medicine is so useful in modern Australia’ says Patricia. Treatments may include herbs or supplements if Patricia feels they are necessary and her skills as a Naturopath complement her 30 years of experience in Traditional Chinese Medicine. If you would like to discuss your fertility problems – or any other health issues you may have, please contact Patricia at Ferny Hills Chiropractic for an appointment: Phone 3351 0933 or North Brisbane Chiropractic, Everton Park on 3354 0111

Fitness News Blast LOSE FAT EFFICIENTLY WITH STRENGTH TRAINING AND HEALTHY EATING

The temperatures are starting to rise, a sure sign to shed the winter coats and the kilos that they covered. We all want a fit and trim figure, but to have a lean body—one weighted more toward muscle than fat—that’s something to celebrate! And the way to burn not just kilojoules, but fat, is through a combination of healthy eating and strength training. What’s the first thing the average person does to drop kilos? Cut kilojoules by eating less. And the second? Burn kilojoules by exercising more. And all because fewer kilojoules leads to fewer kilos, right? Right—to a point. Research shows that restricting kilojoules can reverse your fortune if you overdo it. Consuming too few kilojoules sends famine signals to your body, which reins in your metabolism in order to conserve energy. This in turn slows, and may even halt, weight loss. Strength training alone may not burn as many kilojoules as cardio in the same time, however it does build better muscle, which boosts resting metabolism and accelerates weight loss. Better still, research indicates that women and men who strength train two or three times a week lose a noticeable portion of that weight in body fat after a few months.Â

Let’s work now for that fit and toned body with the friendly staff at Curves Brookside. Contact 3354 4455 for more info.

Counsellor’s Column with Robin Botic Robin Botic COMMON LOVE MYTHS IN Relationship Counselling RELATIONSHIPS AND LIFE PART 2 The following are the remainder of the common myths from last months’ articles. These of course are the more common ones, there are more I am sure and searching your own belief system to find your unique blends is a useful exercise. Evidence of myths being debunked can be happening when your slide into a familiar pattern of reactivity, anger and hurt because behavior expected of your partner fails to materialize. Check out what your anticipation was behind the expectation. The line of your thinking may go something like this – ‘I have done this and this and this for my partner’. (Because I love them and want to do it.) Unconditional? Maybe! A deeper thought yet could be, ‘and if he/she loves me he/she will do the same for me’. But they don’t. Because they don’t know that’s what you expect. (If that return is expected then your language of love, which is not naturally your partners, a whole lot more room for misunderstanding is possible. I have often heard a partner cry in angered self-justification ‘but I did this and this, doesn’t that mean anything?’ So check out those unspoken belief systems. Be prepared to clarify and discuss their veracity and appropriateness. Be prepared for continual rehashes. Expectation changes and you change and grow. Be honest and clear about what you want and why. Have the courage to ask but also the courage to accept refusal. As a client was reading through this list recently I was noting her reaction to the various items. There were sad ‘ohs’ and ‘oh wows’ and ‘hmms’. I asked her what was catching her attention. Her comment was ‘I am reading and recognizing some of my dreams, but also seeing my reality. I am also seeing where a lot of my suffering has come from until I realized the truth. Together we are working on how those truths, that she and her partner are experiencing, can be formed into a more mature, resilient and loving relationship. 16. Life is sure to be better once I find a relationship. 17. You should strive hard to keep your ‘romantic’ love alive (ie. The idealistic, intensely emotional, light-headedness of the early days). Otherwise, what have you got? 18. Feelings shouldn’t ebb and flow if it’s a good relationship. 19. I should try to unconditionally like and accept all things about my partner and their behavior. 20. Because I’ve come from a sad/painful background, I

should be excused of some of my behavior’s. 21. You should always put 100% trust in your partner if you really love them. 22. If I’m a good, nice, hardworking person, I will/should automatically have a good relationship. 23. I should be able to have it all, always. 24. If a relationship isn’t working, it must automatically be because one/both partners aren’t committed/trying hard enough. 25. Once we are married, there will be greater feeling and display of commitment. 26. Once we are married, my family and friends will accept my partner. 27. You must always be absolutely ‘honest’ in your relationship – telling your partner everything. 28. A ‘real’ relationship should be able to cope with me exposing/divulging all my day-to-day insecurities, fears, upsets, uncertainties etc, and if my partner really loves me, they should always be responsive, empathic, supportive etc. 29. If I’m not feeling comfortable or ‘OK’ about something happening in the relationship I should just sit on it and hope it passes because it will only create more problems and cutoffs if I bring it up. Queensland Family History Society: Preserving your family history Fridays@QFHS is the name given to mini-seminars and workshops presented at the Queensland Family History Society Library and Resource Centre, 58 Bellevue Avenue, Gaythorne on the second Friday in the month. These sessions comprise topics of interest to family historians. Coming up on Friday 11 November 2016, Bill Kitson will present a session on topographic and cadastral maps of Queensland. Divided into two parts, his talk will cover Topographic Mapping in Queensland 1839 to 1970 and Cadastral Mapping in Queensland 1839 to 1970. Topographical maps indicate land contours, rivers, land forms, etc. and cadastral maps show extent, value, and ownership of land. Bill Kitson, a highly respected spatial historian is one of Queensland’s best known surveyors. Bill became interested in researching the lives and work of the men that mapped Queensland following a 1974 Survey Office investigation of the surviving markers along the Queensland State borders. In 1980, he was appointed as curator of the then newly established Lands, Mapping, and Surveying Museum. Bill continues to share the history of mapping and surveying in Queensland. His passion for preserving surveying heritage and his generosity in sharing his knowledge of the spatial industry is unsurpassed.

The session begins at 10.00 am. There is a small cost and bookings are required. You can find details about how to book on the QFHS website at http://www.qfhs.org.au/ events. Check out our other events while you are there. You can also find information about QFHS on our website www.qfhs.org.au. For enquiries, contact the Secretary (email: secretary@qfhs.org.au).

Ryan News

Exercise Stone Pillow Exercise Stone Pillow is an annual community event in support of our homeless ADF veterans. I was delighted to attend this event in Dorrington Park last month. All funds raised this year went to Wattle House, which supports veterans who are homeless or at risk of homelessness due to mental illness. I would like to acknowledge Corporal Elena Rowland and Martin Shaw, CEO of Exercise Stone Pillow who did an amazing job organising the event. Martin is also the CEO of Wounded Heroes which he runs along with Founder and President Jim Shapcott. Wounded Heroes is a not-for-profit charity organisation in our community which provides invaluable support for our Defence Force personnel. I am very honoured to be their Patron. The health and wellbeing of our veterans is particularly important in our community, as we are home to the second largest Army Base in Australia, Gallipoli Barracks. Wounded Heroes provides a range of support programs for veterans and their families. This includes funding, equipment and other support to ensure soldier recovery centres are sufficiently equipped for their critical task of helping our wounded fully recover and adapt to new circumstances. As we know, our Defence Force members sacrifice so much for our country - this includes leaving their families at home when they are deployed. Wounded Heroes provides emergency funding and other assistance for almost anything that will help the family of a wounded veteran cope with a demanding set of new circumstances. They also organise social gatherings for families and they provide financial assistance and services to stabilise families suffering from the absence of a partner or parent on deployment. A big thank you also to all of the volunteers who made the Exercise Stone Pillow possible – the success is a credit to you. ADF Care Packages to Deployed Troops This is the time of year when we are all starting to turn our minds towards Christmas and preparations for the holiday season. We also think of those who will not be able to spend Christmas with their family and friends, our deployed defence force members. If you would like to

The Ferny Report Mark Furner M.P.

State Member for Ferny Grove

Funding for Councils to Get Ready for natural disasters I’m pleased to report the State Government has provided Brisbane City and Moreton Bay Regional Councils with $308,000 and $177,000 in funding respectively, as part of the RACQ ‘Get Ready Queensland’ program. The grants will prove vital in helping our local councils create greater awareness about natural disasters, and how residents in our region can become more resilient. The grants will assist with activities such as school emergency awareness, clean-up days, information stalls in shopping centres, disaster preparedness kits and the purchase of emergency equipment. School Leaders’ visit to Parliament House On Friday 21 October I hosted school leaders, principals, and P&C representatives from three schools at Parliament House. It was a pleasure to host such an engaging and enthusiastic group of students, and I’m looking forward to doing it again with four more schools on Friday 4 November. Bills before the Legal Affairs and Community Safety Committee As Chair of the Legal Affairs and Community Safety Committee I have been heavily involved in the following Bills which are both to be reported on by Tuesday 1st

November: The Serious and Organised Crime Legislation Amendment Bill 2016 will implement a new Organised Crime Regime to tackle all forms of serious and organised crime. This Bill will deliver a new and comprehensive organised crime regime to tackle organised crime in all its forms. This bill draws on initiatives making crucial enhancements to ensure operational speed and simplicity; reworks part of the 2013 laws and removes the parts which are excessive, disproportionate or unnecessary; and addresses constitutional risks. The Limitation of Actions Bills relate to institutional child sexual abuse and child abuse civil proceedings. The Bills aim to reform the way child sexual abuse cases are dealt with through a number of substantive changes, including abolishing the limitation periods that currently apply to damages claims and introducing a framework for ‘class action’ suits to be brought against institutions.

THUMBS UP THUMBS DOWN THUMBS DOWN to our crazy politically

correct State Govt. removing the basic english test for Qld taxi drivers. Maybe they just want us to buy a translation app to order a cab.

THUMBS UP to the best reality comedy

show on TV — the US Presidential election. Both candidates are scaring the hell out of everyone particularly when you realise only about 40% will vote. I wonder what memories Bill will recall when he opens the front door of the White House?

THUMBS DOWN to the Qld Rail debacle.

Who would have thought more services and shorter driver hours would lead to a need for more staff? Where is the Fat Controller when you need him?

THUMBS UP to the Crime

and Corruption Commission investigating election funding issues to include the 2016 Moreton Bay council elections. I seem to recollect the 2012 elections had major funding issues but as usual nothing was proven.

THUMBS UP to all those planning to

light up their houses for Christmas. I am told by some (small) people that the more lights you turn on the better the chance Santa will find you.

THUMBS DOWN to the end of the footy season. Thank goodness. It is a weekly embarrassment trying not to disclose my tipping results.
