Mitchelton Garden Club When the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club meets on 2nd March at the Enoggera Memorial Hall, Wendy Skelton, the guest speaker, will talk about geraniums. Because it is so easy to grow, this plant is very popular and provides a lot of colour when in bloom. It is also suitable to grow in window boxes or in pots on balconies or patios. It likes a sunny position with shade protection in the hottest part of summer. Geraniums don’t require a rich soil but it must be well drained. (Nitrogen rich fertilizers should be avoided.) Usually they will tolerate a light frost. Just wet the soil around a geranium plant when watering. Avoid any moisture getting on the leaves as this encourages attack by fungal diseases. Regular pruning is needed to increase flowering and develop a compact plant. This is best done in autumn when the main flowering is over, or in late summer. It’s a good idea to strike some of the cuttings, because if there are humid conditions some of your plants could suffer, and the propagated cuttings will provide a replacement. Also it’s handy to have a spare plant or two on hand to give to friends. If you leave the cuttings out of water for a day or two until

a scab or dry skin forms over the cut, this assists root growth. Using a hormone growth powder or gel could be an advantage but is not necessary. Do you know that the Coleus produces growth hormones? If you leave other cuttings in the same water as coleus cuttings, you’ll have a better success rate of creating new plants. The hall is situated at the corner of Wardell and Trundle Streets, Enoggera. It is close to public transport and accessible by wheel chair. Meetings commence after morning tea which is served at 9.45 a.m. Visitors and new members are most welcome. For more information, please phone Pat, the president, on 3356 1256.

Queensland Family History Society Seminar - Family History on the cheap

Family history can be an expensive and time consuming hobby, but there are ways to save both time and money. Queensland Family History Society is holding a seminar on Saturday, 4 March 2017 to assist family history researchers to make this pursuit less expensive. Come along to hear the three sessions dealing with economical ways of researching. The first session is ‘Looking at home sources’: birth, death, and marriage certificates and alternative sources, genealogy societies and family history societies. This will be followed with a session on websites to make the most of Google, the internet, and social media. The final session is ‘Making the most of libraries and archives’ covering both Australian and overseas repositories. Our presenter is Shauna Hicks, a Fellow of the Queensland Family History Society. She was awarded a Distinguished Achievement Award from the Australian Society of Archivists and, in 2009, Shauna received the Australasian Federation of Family History Organisations award for Meritorious Services to Family History. She has been tracing her own family history since 1977. Shauna is the author of a number of research books published by Unlock the Past, including Family history on the cheap, now in its 2nd edition. The seminar commences at 9.00 am at the Queensland Baptists Conference Centre, 53 Prospect Road, Gaythorne. Bookings are essential and there is a small cost. You may book online at www.qfhs.org.au/events/qfhs-seminars. You can check QFHS’s other events for 2017 at www.qfhs. org.au/events and also find information about QFHS at www. qfhs.org.au. For enquiries, contact the Secretary (email: secretary@qfhs.org.au).

Local Football with Mates Join the Over 35’s Football!

Over 35’s football on the north side of Brisbane continues to grow each season and Westside Grovely FC and Pine Hills FC are encouraging players to join in the fun.

Both Clubs have teams in the Over 35’s and Over 45’s Men’s competitions. Westside Grovely FC’s Club spokesperson Wayne Gittins says that the Over 35’s Football motto of ‘local football with mates’ is one of the major reasons that players want to either start back playing again or keep coming back season after season. ‘Our teams have players of all abilities and ages; we play for the fun and the fitness, and everybody gets to enjoy themselves and socialise. Friday night home games suit the players and the Club, and we don’t have to travel too far for away games either.’ Pine Hills FC Over 35’s Coordinator John Canning says that Pine Hills have had teams in Over 35’s Football since its’ inception in 2011, and has seen the interest in the competition grow season after season. ‘There are now Divisions 1 to 5 in the Over 35’s, and 2 Divisions of Over 45’s this season,’ said John. ‘We have great facilities here at Pine Hills and this is a factor in players returning to play each season, and with being able to socialise after our games. We are keen for more players to join our teams to add to social aspect of our Club. So, if anyone is keen to come and join us please get in contact.’

Westside Grovely FC is located at Hanran Street, Grovely and interested players can contact Wayne via email on werris74@ live.com.au Pine Hills FC are located at James Drysdale Reserve, Bunya and interested players can contact John via email on pythonso35s@gmail.com The season starts on Friday 24 March and runs through to the start of the September school holidays. All teams break for the Easter and July School holidays. More information can also be found at www.over35sfootball. org.au or by emailing games@over35sfootball.org.au

THE PROBUS CLUB OF MITCHELTON INC.

A New Year is beginning, one we hope will be good for all of us but holding some uncertainty with the change of Presidency of the United States.

We finished last year with a great Christmas Party, with entertainment provided by Romio & Juliette, a very nice duo who played music we knew and could sing along to if we wished. We always start the year off with Trivia, and our January meeting was no exception. There are always some challenging questions covering a wide range of topics, and we do have some smart people in the Club who keep their ears to the ground and come up with the right answers, and the rest of us learn something – if we can remember it – and think we should pay more attention to what is happening around us. We all have an enjoyable day anyway. In February, our Guest Speaker is Michael Beatty from the RSPCA, who will catch us up on the latest news from there. They apparently had a good day at the Convention Centre recently with a record number of ‘adoptions’. There never seems to be a shortage of animals available for adoption, and happily, families prepared to accept the challenge. Prior to that though, we are having an EXPO, open to anyone who would like to come along, where we are ‘featuring’ 15 organisations, offering information about what is available in the community to make our lives a little easier. We are covering Travel, Retirement Villages, Vision, Hearing, Home Assistance, Breast Screening, Medical Alarms, U3A, Essential Oils to name a few. Admission is free and we are providing free refreshments also. The date for this event is Wednesday, 22nd February from 10.00am - 2.00pm and bookings would be appreciated. (Details appear below). And we have lucky door prizes as well. For more information about our activities, please contact our Secretary, Claire Henderson on 3355 1214, or e-mail: clarah@powerup. com.au. Visitors are always welcome at our venue, The Gaythorne Bowls Club, 18 Prospect Road, Gaythorne, where our meetings are held on the fourth Tuesday of each month.

Help Allegra get to the Nationals for Junior State Calisthenics!

Letter to the Editor

Allegra Ruddy, 9 years old, of Ferny Grove, has been selected in the Queensland Junior State Calisthenics Team for 2017. In July, she will fly to Sydney to compete in the Nationals, representing Queensland. Allegra has done calisthenics for almost 5 years and trains very hard as it is quite a physically demanding sport. The family are looking for sponsorship to help Allegra get to Sydney. Support for Drug Affected Famillies now available in The Hills District

Family Drug Support are expanding their support services to Queensland families and significant others with new funding from the Queensland Government through Queensland Health. Family Drug Support provides help to families of drug/alcohol users through a national 24-hour toll free phone line (1300 368 186), courses and information sessions as well as ongoing support groups. With the increased funding, The Hills District now hosts one of these new support groups at Wahminda Park Girl Guides Hall, Baden Lane, Ferny Hills. The support groups provide families with collective wisdom, information and a supportive, non-judgemental environment to feel heard. Family Drug Support will also mark 20 years of supporting families at its annual National Family Drug Support Day to be held at events across Australia on 23 and 24 February 2017. The events coincide with the anniversary of the death of Family Drug Support’s CEO Mr Trimingham’s son Damien from a heroin overdose in 1997 which led to his establishment of Family Drug Support to help other families. The National Family Drug Support Day’s theme for 2017 is ‘see the person not the drug’ and it is hoped that families in difficult circumstances will remember to see their family members as being far more than the drugs they may be taking. The National Family Drug Support Day also aims to raise awareness of the services and the help that is needed for families, reduce the stigma and discrimination for families and drug users and promote harm reduction strategies. The Ferny Hills support group runs on the second Monday of each month, contact Maree on 0432 846 959 for details. Further information on the National Family Drug Support Day can be found at www.nationalfds. org.au or general information on Family Drug Support and meetings in other areas can be found at www.fds.org.au

Counsellor’s Column with Robin Botic

‘Swingers’

Robin Botic Dear Robin, My wife approached me a few weeks ago, sounding me out about my attitude to swinging. Even though I may have fantasized about threesomes or other partners in the past and expressed these views, I was still shocked when she approached me about it. It upset her that I was shocked. She said she thought that I also wanted it. I didn't realise until this point that she'd also wanted to do this. She's been working on me the last couple of weeks saying ‘What could be the harm if we both agree, it could be fun, add a bit of spice to our relationship’ etcetera. ‘We could do it safely.’ ‘We would each know what the other would be doing and it would be discreet.’ She's obviously been thinking about it for a good while and now I'm wondering why. While it was in Fantasyland for me, it seemed a great idea. But now I'm faced with the possible reality part of me feels excited, but I also feel a great deal of hesitation and discomfort about it. I don't understand her lack of trepidation. She says lots of couples do it, but I don't know any or they're not talking. Internet sites she's been visiting seems to suggest the opposite. I'm under quite a bit of pressure over this. I am wondering if I am really out of step and behind the times. I'm not sure how it will affect our relationship, whichever way I go. I'd like some advice. John.

Dear John, Fantasies are normal. Everyone has them in some shape or form. Realising them is taking them to another step from which there is no turning back. Any decision you make has to be made taking all possible consequences into account. (Even then there will be ones you won't see.) And you will have to take full responsibility for those decisions and the impact they have on your relationship. Because they will impact. I haven't seen anyone I've known of, get off that lightly in terms of just having fun and adding a bit of excitement and spice to their lives. That sounds harmless, but is it? True, this behaviour has been a part of human relationships for eons. In the seventies it was called "having an open relationship". The difficulties it causes personally and to the relationship were the same then as I have found now when I counsel couples who are thinking of, or who have engaged in, this behaviour. I make no moral judgments. They are not mine to make. It is your relationship and the rules of engagement are yours to work out. These are some of the issues you may have to deal with. Yes, excitement is the lure, but often it's a cheap thrill that comes at a high price. In effect, while permission is given to the other, and that seems to make it safer (takes out a lot of the guilt), it still doesn't deal with the fear that underlies that kind of interaction. For example, what if my partner finds someone more attractive than myself? What about trust issues? How difficult is it going to be to be really honest about what's happening? Remember: your energy and interest, no matter what you may say to each other, is going to be detoured out of your primary relationship, in one way or another. You're opening up Pandora's Box, and the scary part is, you don't know what you will find. It does affect the www.hillsecho.com

relationship in ways you can not yet know, and sometimes there is no going back. Are you prepared to risk this? That's one side of the question. The other is: what's going on in each of you and your relationship that you are needing to look outside of your relationship for excitement and spice? All relationships experience downtimes, particularly around the seven-year period. (Seven year itch it used to be called.) It is also common in the thirty-somethings. This is also the danger time for affairs. What this initially signified is that issues are not being resolved. Boredom, distancing, frustration, endless arguments, are symptoms of inner conditions that we are projecting onto the other and the relationship. For example, outside excitement is often a need for selfvalidation from another, other than our partner. It's like we've gotten bored with their initial approval of us, the in-love stage is over, and by now the criticism and daily hum-drum that is part of all our lives is really starting to show up and perhaps erk us. Why do we need this new sexual or personal validation of ourselves? These issues are in the realm of our sense of self and self-worth. Looking outside is due to a lack in ourselves. You really need to check out what is happening in each of you and the relationship. This is not a path that I would tread lightly. Your discomfort is speaking to you about these above issues. Listen to this, and dig deeper with greater honesty into your relationship. Robin

Ryan News

from your Federal Member for Ryan JANE PRENTICE

Welcome to 2017

The start of a New Year is always a good time for me to remind you of all the ways I can assist community groups and schools. Below I have detailed some services that may be of interest when planning your year. If you are interested in any of these services please send an email to jane.prentice. mp@aph.gov.au • Marquees: I have marquees available to borrow for your school fetes and events. Make sure to call my office well in advance to check availability and list your event on my ‘Community Calendar’ on my website (www.janeprentice. com.au). • Ryan Community Service Awards: We have many wonderful volunteers in our community and it is important to ensure their hard work and dedication does not go unnoticed. If there is someone in your school community who you feel deserves recognition, nominate them for a Ryan Community Service Award (nomination form available on my website). • Flags: If your school or community group’s flag/s need replacing, I am happy to come and present you with new ones and explain their history and significance to your students. • Social Media: Our community is very supportive and inclusive. I like to share details of upcoming events on my Facebook page to let residents know what is happening locally. If you have an upcoming community event and would like some extra promotion please email my office.

Vinnies Grovely

Another local organisation looking for volunteers is Vinnies Grovely on Dawson Parade. They do a wonderful job supporting the community and are always in need of a helping hand to assist them to sort through donations. When I delivered clothing items I was assured they take items in any reasonable condition as they are able to send some of the poorer quality garments to rag factories - meaning they never go to waste! They also need shop volunteers (it is airconditioned!) so if you can spare some time to help please call the store on 3355 7219.

Vinnies Grovely are looking for volunteers.

Saluting their Service Commemorations Program

I am proud to announce that Gaythorne RSL Sub-branch has received two grants under the Community Commemorative Grants category of the Saluting Their Service (STS) Commemorations Program. The federally funded initiative honours the service and sacrifice of Australia’s servicemen and women in wars, conflicts and peace operations. It also aims to promote appreciation and understanding of the role those who have served have played in shaping our nation. Gaythorne will use some of their funding to inscribe VC recipients’ names on the Community War Memorial in Sid Loder Park, Mitchelton. The Department of Veterans’ Affairs offers several grant programmes throughout the year. If you would like information on grants or how to apply visit http://www.dva. gov.au/consultation-and-grants/grants.

The TOD plans to incorporate dining, retail and residential elements along with an 8-screen cinema complex and plans for a more integrated transport experience in Ferny Grove. The development will provide jobs for local workers, both in the construction phase and ongoing retail opportunities in the completed development.

TRAINING AWARDS Nominations are now open for the 2017 Queensland Training Awards. These awards showcase excellence in the vocational education and training (VET) sector and offer a unique chance for individuals and training-based organisations to be recognised for their determination and success. I’m urging all eligible apprentices, trainees, VET students, teachers and trainers, employers, training providers and community-based organisations in the Ferny Grove Electorate to take part. Last year I had the privilege of presenting awards to the Metropolitan Regional Finalists on behalf of the Queensland Government and saw first-hand how valuable

the experience of being involved in the process could be. There are 14 award categories available in 2017 that recognise excellence for individuals, employers and training organisations. Nominations close 31 March.

SATURDAY OFFICES I will be conducting Saturday mobile offices t h r o u g h o u t 2 0 1 7 a t Mark discussing local issues at a mobile office K-Mart Plaza Arana Hills. The first of the mobile offices will be held from 9-12 on Saturday 11th February and 11th March, with future dates to be announced soon. My community listening posts are a great opportunity to discuss any state government issues you may have questions about.

THUMBS UP THUMBS DOWN

THUMBS DOWN to State government and BCC putting up millions for a boxing match. I thought our emphasis and advertising was towards non violent behaviour. Are we that desperate for tourism money?

THUMBS UP to Pauline Hanson. Love her or hate her, you have to admire her tenacity and there is no doubt a lot of Labor and LNP candidates are in panic mode. THUMBS DOWN to all those who want to change the date of Aust. Day. There is no date that everyone will agree upon. Let’s hope our leadership have the guts to ignore it and just get on with the important stuff.

THUMBS UP to a new school year. My

grandson loved first day at Prep but was devastated when I informed him he had to keep going every day.

THUMBS UP to the cricket Big Bash. Not

only did the ball get bashed but the tennis TV ratings were bashed up as well!
