Much More Than A Train Station
As first reported in the October 2017 edition of The Hills Echo, the Ferny Grove Railway Station’s Transit Oriented Development (TOD) is progressing from design to development. The developer, Honeycombes Property Group (HPG) who was appointed by the Queensland Government to design and deliver the TOD, has now lodged a development application with Brisbane City Council. HPG is proposing a retail, residential and leisure precinct to revitalise the existing train station, creating a purpose-built community hub. A variety of community services are also proposed including a cinema complex. Managing Director, Peter Honeycombe said HPG had committed to extensive community consultation since 2016 before lodging the development application. ‘The community feedback from these initiatives played a big part in our ongoing adjustments to the proposed development form, to help meet the needs expressed by the various community interests in and around Ferny Grove station,’ Mr Honeycombe said. ‘We have held half a dozen different public forums, door knocked hundreds of residences neighbouring the project, letter box dropped thousands and established an interactive website to keep the community informed.’ The proposed development of Ferny Grove Central includes a fitness centre, medical and allied health centre and child care facility as suggested during early community consultation. These facilities were incorporated in lieu of a residential tower above the retail at the suggestion of the community focus groups.
An artists impression of what Ferny Grove Central may look like
In keeping with the surrounding urban environment, a fourlevel residential building of 64 apartments will front Conavalla Street. Featuring a mix of one, two and three-bedrooms, the apartments will assist in buffering the retail and bus hub from the neighbouring residents. In response to community feedback, the proposed plans include commuter parking upgrades and an increased number of parking bays of which 80 per cent will be undercover. The current bitumen carpark will be developed into a pedestrian friendly precinct which includes a new retail offering, cinema and impressive local amenity accessible to all the community. Construction of Ferny Grove Central is expected to commence in early 2019, subject to securing development approval from Brisbane City Council. Community members can keep up to date with the development’s progress via the project website fernygrovecentral.com.au

Young Picassos At Work Celebrating 50 Years
By the time you read this the 50th Hills District & Bunya Garden Competition will have been judged on Sunday 9th September. Quite an achievement for any volunteer event to celebrate 50 years of community involvement.
Ferny Grove State High School Year 12 Visual Art in Practice students in front of their mural.
Have you visited the Ferny Grove Bowls club recently?
Ferny Grove State High School Year 12 Visual Art in Practice students have been busy painting a mural on the water tank at the club. Their teacher, Doctor Zoe Porter, has been very pleased with the students’ consistent focus and application of skills. The members of the Bowls Club Committee who initiated this community project are overjoyed at how this mural has beautified and Megan Reid and Grace brightened up the grounds. Why not head on down and have a look? Bailey at work.
The Arana Hills library will have details of the winning gardens on display from Monday 10th September along with the Garden Competition’s website which will feature all the photos. The judges of this year’s competition were Noel and Heather Prior. They are totally independent of the committee and area and are members of the Australian Horticultural Judges Society. The committee are very grateful for the hours they have spent visiting gardens and collating scores. Since 1968 when the garden competition was started there have been hundreds of entrants in many categories. The huge amount of hard working volunteer committee helped plan and organise the competition, acquiring and approaching sponsors to supply the wonderful prizes for the winning gardeners. Without these committee members and huge local support from hundreds of sponsors this event would not have seen this 50th year. Drought conditions have tested the gardeners and committee but didn’t stop the competition. It did change gardening views though with the waterwise garden category introduced in 2001 and still strongly involved in all the judging. Presentation of Prizes to Winning Gardeners for this 50th Year will take place at Arana Hills Library on Sunday 23rd September 2pm. Everyone is welcome. Visit the website www. fhpa.org.au for further details.

The original idea of establishing a golf club at Keperra was first conceived by Captain Robert Cottam and Mrs Elsie Waters while playing tennis at Mitchelton. They would saunter into the paddock adjacent to the tennis court to swing a club between tennis sets. By 1931 a golf course was being carved out of virgin scrub next to the railway line. It was officially opened on 7 June 1932 and it now features three sets of nine holes, which comprise three 18 hole competition courses. From the beginning the ladies worked alongside the men mowing, planting, watering or labouring on the course proper or painting, sewing and catering inside the clubhouse. The contribution of the ladies helped to establish the game of golf at Enoggera Golf Club and ensured its survival when the club was re-named Keperra Country Golf Club. To preserve this history, local Keperra golfers Lyn Fryer and Ella King have written and published a book titled ‘Keperra Ladies: The story of Ladies’ Golf at Keperra Country Golf Club.’ Their colleague Eileen Jones volunteered to act as Editor and facilitated a very professional writing style to compliment the many photographs, both old and new, that are a feature of the book. The book is priced at $30 per copy and orders can be placed by emailing Lyn at lynfryer20@gmail.com (Editor’s Note: Lyn and Roger Fryer were previous owners and publishers of The Hills Echo.)

Willmore wins grant to help prepare children for success
Willmore Kindergarten and Preschool have been awarded a Small Assistance Grant for Early Years Services from the Queensland Government worth almost $20,000. The local, not-for-profit community kindergarten has been serving the Ferny Hills area for 48 years and funding received will significantly benefit Willmore’s teaching team, current and future children and families as well as other educators and community members in the local community. Willmore’s Director, Mrs Linda Meinicke said the project will provide education and information on development, cognition and living skills to kindergarten aged children (aged 3.5 – 5), parents and educators at Willmore Kindergarten to increase the child’s likelihood of success. The grant has enabled the Kindergarten to employ two clinical psychologists, Ms Chrystal Gray from Gray Matter Psychology and Dr Sacha Rombouts from Happy Minds Australia who will work with Willmore across this year and next year. ‘The benefits this project will bring to the children, families and staff is immeasurable,’ said Mrs Meinicke. ‘We are extremely grateful to the Queensland Government for funding this project. We know that to be confident and resilient are the cornerstones for all children to thrive in our community.’ .

Swim Into Summer
Swimmers aged 4 to 44 are set to dive into a new season of swimming with Ferny Hills Swimming Club. The Club is hosting a Breakfast BBQ and Sign on Day at the Ferny Hills Pool from 8am to 11am on Saturday 15th September.
‘Thanks to two substantial grants from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund, the Club has been able to replace the starting blocks and the lane ropes at the Ferny Hills Pool. The pool is looking fantastic, and we are ready to celebrate the start of another great swimming season’ said Club President, Susanne Watson. ‘We welcome swimmers of all ages and abilities. Wherever they do their swimming lessons or training, Swimming Club is a chance to put those skills into practice. Getting a time every week really shows kids how quickly they are improving!” Susanne said. “For young swimmers, who might be a little nervous, they can start in the water rather than diving in, and they can have an older swimmer in the lane helping them. It’s all about having a go!’ Ferny Hills Swimming Club holds weekly club nights at the Ferny Hills Pool every Friday night during Terms 4 and 1. The weekly program includes plenty of friendly competition with everything from 12.5m to 200m swims, as well as novelty events. The Club also supports squad swimmers who want to take their swimming to the next level, and compete at Interclub meets, championships and even Open Water Swimming. Don’t sit the pot in the water. Let it sit on stones to raise it above the water. Blooms: African Violet plant food or a fertilizer with a relatively high phosphorous content will promote flower growth. In summer feed your plants every week. Troubles: The leaves could be scorched by the sun or develop brown spots from water droplets. Yellow leaves could indicate overfeeding or the air is too dry. Pale leaves show the plant is too cold. September is going to be another ‘Major Event’ month for Brisbane Tramway Museum at Ferny Grove. You Don’t Need To Be Crazy...
‘People often avoid seeing a psychologist because they think they aren’t ‘bad enough’, says Dr Natalie Shockley, Clinical Psychologist and owner of growing psychology practice, Samford Psychology. ‘It’s not unusual for someone to report they’ve been struggling for months but felt they needed to be ‘more unwell’ before seeing someone.’ There can also be feelings of shame or failure when people realise they’re struggling in life, which makes seeking assistance harder. Experiencing feelings of depression, anxiety and stress doesn’t necessarily mean one has a psychiatric ‘illness’, people may just be going through a difficult time and their emotions are telling them that life isn’t ‘okay’ right now…... So what can we do when life gets difficult? Looking after ourselves is always important, but it becomes more
important when life becomes challenging. Eating well, getting enough sleep, regular exercise, taking time out to have fun and relax, and spending time with supportive people are helpful generally. The times when it feels hardest to do these things are the times when we need them the most. ‘And of course, if you find you keep struggling with difficult emotions, talking to health professionals can provide that much-needed extra assistance. It’s often better to seek assistance sooner rather than later. Talking to someone objective and empathetic can be a great help’ said Natalie. Samford Psychology has several therapists who can be of assistance, including art therapists, clinical psychologists and registrars, along with the most recent addition of Provisional Psychologist, Sonya Melbourne.

These words can cause frustration for everyone, especially when repeated for a second or third time. If this sounds all too familiar, it’s time to have your hearing checked. Often a hearing loss can go undiagnosed for years, but it starts with being asked to turn the TV down or when others become irritated at having to repeat themselves. A common misconception, which delays people seeking help, is that hearing loss is something affecting older people, but it’s more common than people realise. The Hearing Care Industry Association reports that 1 in 6 Australians has some degree of hearing loss, almost half of whom are of working age. Untreated hearing loss not only affects work relationships, it can lead to social isolation, reduced social activity and increased risk of depression. An untreated hearing loss can impair your memory and increase the risk of developing dementia later in life. If you’re not yet motivated to book a hearing test, think of your loved ones. A hearing loss not only affects you, but also how you interact with family, friends, or even the person behind the checkout. You may avoid interacting with grandchildren because understanding them is too difficult; going to dinner with friends because your partner has to repeat the conversation for you; or not go at all because it’s embarrassing. The good news is there are options available and it starts with a hearing test. So do it for your loved ones, or just yourself, and book a hearing test today. The ancient Himalayan art of vibration and sound healing is practised with hand beaten healing bowls and is now available at Yogasol in Ferny Hills. This therapy is widely accepted as the universal collective vibration of the entire universe, or in yoga we refer to this simply as Aum. Each bowl resonates at its base pitch at 432hz or 432 cycles per second. Allowing these vibrations to resonate through our internal organs and systems can help to recollaborate and offset the daily interference on our natural human resonance of 5-10hz. This will leave you with a deep sense of both relaxation and rejuvenation in your physical body as well as a balanced clarity in your intellectual body and energised in your emotional body. Benefits include: Relief from acute/chronic muscular skeletal pain, Chronic/adrenal fatigue, Headaches/ migraine and Anxiety/depression. This is a complimentary therapy and should not replace any treatment or advice given by your GP. This therapy is not suitable for those with a heart condition/pace maker or pregnancy. Can one word have different meanings to two people? Last week my husband had the ‘manflu’ and moaned about being ‘sick.’ I felt annoyed with him sitting up in bed watching TV and drinking cups of tea. ‘How can that be sick?’ I thought. The difference in our understanding of the meaning of the word sick, and many other words and symbols, comes from our childhood. These misunderstandings can cause big rifts in a relationship. The answer is to create shared meaning. We all come from different families and cultures, giving different meanings to words. So even if your partner grew up down the road, it’s worth having a conversation about what certain words mean to them. Some keys words to explore are: ‘husband,’ ‘wife,’ ‘home,’ ‘sex,’ ‘money,’ ‘play,’ and ‘parent.’ Start a conversation to ask each other: What do these words or symbols mean to you? What did they mean growing up? What assumptions do you have about these words? Each of these words is symbolic in the broader scope of how you want to live your lives. What shared meaning can you create to ensure you’re both working on the same goals for your lives together? To find out more about creating shared meaning contact Kristina Challands on 0487 480120. www.hillsecho.com

Are You Fit To Sleep?
How long has it been since you fell asleep as soon as your head hit the pillow? For so many women over 40, into their 50’s and preparing for some serious ‘me time’ in retirement, the secret to a solid nights’ sleep and feeling refreshed in the morning still eludes them. There’s plenty of ‘how to’ checklists around. But what if an answer can be discovered in your present daily routine? More and more women are not only committing to a reguler exercise routine, and enjoying the energy of the group in trainer-led sessions, but confidently incorporating learned moves in thier daily wake-up and wind-down sessions at home. ‘Wanting to feel fitter, stronger and more fabulous is what brings many women to our studio,’ says Bonnie Cunial, owner of Fabulous Physical Fun Fitness Studio. ‘An awareness of wellness issues like managing stress, osteoporosis prevention, improving balance and maintaining mobility are common triggers to get started on your fitness routine. ‘Even if you’ve never done anything like this before, or have had forgettable experiences in gyms full of 20 year olds we offer solutions you can try,’ says Bonnie. ‘And we’re always delighted to hear so many clients are simply sleeping better. What a brilliant outcome. Getting fit to sleep.’ Bonnie’s Studio style incorporates gentle, elongating stretch moves in classes, coupled with concious breathing and the best Pilates, Yoga and strength training techniques. This helps clients experience the benefits of improved circulation, deeper breathing and balanced bodies better equipped to find a comfortable, more relaxed sleeping position. Support For Helping In The Home
Care in the home has become a welcomed way of living for older people in Brisbane’s Northern suburbs allowing them to continue living in their own home and community. But industry insights reveal that people aged over 65 sometimes don’t understand how the in-home aged care system works, meaning people often go without vital support services. Just Better Care Brisbane North owner, Susanne Jones, says ongoing reforms have been a step in the right direction for providing support to older people, but the problem remains that many people don’t know how to access funding and how it can be used. ‘We usually find that a face-to-face conversation is the
best way to share this vital information with our older community members and their families,’ said Susanne. For some, assistance with shopping and meal preparation a few times each week might be adequate, while others may have more complex needs. ‘There is a common misconception in-home aged care is just for personal care such as showering, so we are trying to get the message out that the possibilities are wide and varied,’ Susanne said. ‘When I run into older friends in the supermarket or in my street and I see them struggling to carry their groceries or tend their gardens, I gently remind them that there are people that can help them with these everyday activities. ‘Some of our customers use in-home support to plan adventures, catch ups with friends or companion support where we spend a few hours with them just chatting and keeping them company. ‘Getting support is about aiding people to continue living independently and leading quality lives. ‘There’s no harm in asking for a helping hand,’said Susanne. To find out if you or a family member is eligible for government-funded inhome support, visit www. myagedcare.gov.au or phone 1800 200 422. For advice on how we can support you at home, phone Sue Hilton on 3056 0777 or visit local. justbettercare.com

New Pain Management Program
Chronic Pain can be a debilitating condition which can have a severe impact on all areas of a person’s life, including their mental and emotional well-being. Pine Rivers Private Hospital has developed a specialised intensive Pain Management Program, based on upto-date evidence based therapy techniques, to assist pain sufferers gain relief through an interdisciplinary approach. Pine Rivers Private's Allied Health Manager, Julie Huntington says the chronic pain program incorporates psychological and behavioural techniques to manage
Page 34 - September 2018, The Hills Echo
not just the physical experience of chronic pain, but its emotional and social impacts. ‘Chronic pain is defined as pain that persists for more than three months after anticipated tissue healing, and conditions can be debilitating and unrelenting - leading to various degrees of disability if not managed well,’ Julie said. ‘This type of severe pain is not just a physical experience, it's associated with major psychiatric conditions and significant social impacts. In Australia, one in five individuals live with chronic pain, and its prevalence is projected to increase with an ageing population. ‘Such statistics have fuelled the development of our specialised pain program and we assess and manage the physical, psychological, and environmental factors for each patient. Interventions addressing these factors have been associated with increased resilience, improved self-efficacy, and improved mental health outcomes.’ In addition to psychological interventions, the interdisciplinary program draws from psychiatric, pharmacological, and exercise physiology to offer an integrative approach to managing pain. Program topics include mindfulness and cognitive based therapy, relaxation training, interventions for depression, anxiety, anger, support through grief and loss, improving communication, nurturing interpersonal supports, and facilitating valuesled lifestyle. Goalsetting, pacing, exercise, dietary input, medication and psychiatric input are integrated into the modules. For further information, or if you would like to discuss referral into the Pain Management Program, please contact Julie Huntington (Allied Health Manager) on 3881 7129. www.hillsecho.com

Draft Ferny Grove/Upper Kedron Neighbourhood Plan
Brisbane City Council has been directed by the State Government to include a number of Ministerial conditions as part of their declaration of State Interests, in the final stage of the Ferny Grove Upper Kedron Neighbourhood Plan, before the plan is ratified. Unfortunately, these changes are to be written into the planning instrument without any public consultation as dictated by the State Government statutory guide lines to ‘Making an Amendment to a Local Planning Instrument’ (MAPLI).

2018-19 Volunteer Grants – Opening of Funding Round
Community organisations in Dickson can now apply for their share of $20 million in grants to support the important work done by volunteers. Volunteers are the backbone of our community and the economic value of volunteering in Australia is worth $290 billion per year, notwithstanding the priceless social contribution. Grants between $1,000 to $5,000 will be available to assist community organisations buy equipment, train volunteers and contribute towards things such as fuel costs. If you are interested in more information, please contact my electorate office to find out more.
Pine Rivers Show
Another successful Pine Rivers Show has been held once again this year and I want to congratulate the Show Society and all the volunteers that made the three days possible. It was my pleasure to attend the Official Opening as well as meeting many locals over the course of the show. It was great to meet the local school children who were presented with prizes at the opening and also Show Ambassador for 2018, Zane Austin. As always I had a stall where people were able to collect children resource packs and other important community information. This year we also had a prize for completing the community survey and an important petition for locals to get behind my campaign to upgrade the Linkfield Road Overpass.
Backing Mental Health in Dickson
Even though mental health does not show visible signs it can often be a toll on affected individuals and to those around them significantly. In this year’s Federal Budget $338.1 million was announced in new mental funding, with particular focus on suicide, prevention, older Australians and research. The new Million Minds Mission that will conduct mental health research will mean an additional one million Australians will benefit from diagnosis, treatment and recovery. This mission has received funding of $125 million over the next decade that will further support individuals who are suffering from mental health.

Welcoming Senator Jim Molan I joined with fellow Queensland Coalition Members and Senators, along with the Prime Minister and Ministers Payne and Pyne, at the signing of the contract for Land 400.
7th Brigade Farewell
The Ryan electorate proudly includes Gallipoli Barracks, home of the 7th Brigade. This garrison is certainly a well-oiled machine and I appreciate the strong relationship I share with the men and women on the base. Brigadier Anthony Rawlins has served in the Australian Army for more than 30 years and has experienced his fair share of deployment conflict. As Commander of the 7th Brigade, Brigadier Rawlins has been pivotal to ensuring his soldiers are battle ready and conditioned to cope in challenging environments. Brigadier Rawlins (aka ‘Changi’) has held a distinguished
On Wednesday, 8 August, it was my pleasure to welcome retired Major General, Senator Jim Molan, to the Ryan electorate to highlight the best of Brisbane (and Queensland). As many readers will know the Ryan electorate is home to Gallipoli Barracks at Enoggera, (Australia’s second largest defence base) and with many local defence families in the area, Senator Molan was invited to visit St Andrew’s Catholic Primary School at Ferny Grove. Students at St Andrew’s were excited to welcome Senator Molan to their school, and discuss his experiences. With many students coming from families with defence involvement, Senator Molan was genuinely appreciated. After an enthusiastic forum with year six students at St Andrew’s, the Senator attended a morning tea event with members of The Gap RSL. Local RSL members, some who had even served with the Senator, had the opportunity to discuss their interests and views in a forum focussed solely on defence and veterans.

TheMark Ferny Report Furner M.P. State Member for Ferny Grove
Ferny Grove Transit Oriented Development Still On Track
After many months of public consultation I am pleased Honeycombes Property Group has lodged their Development Application to the Brisbane City Council for the Ferny GroveTransit Oriented Development. Increasing parking spaces at the Ferny Grove Railway Station and improving neighbourhood amenity for locals has been two of the major concerns residents have consistently raised with me. Approval of this project will deliver on both of those issues. Honeycombes intends to call the location Ferny Grove Central as reflective of its purpose as a multi-use neighbourhood centre. As well as increased car parking spaces and 64 residential units the project will deliver a full-size supermarket, cinema complex, childcare facility, medical centre and other retail and commercial space. The project will inject in excess of $90 million to the local economy and will provide an ongoing boost to local employment once the project is completed. The Palaszczuk Government has allocated over $9 million for an immediate increase of 250 commuter car spaces which will push the number available to over 1,100. In order to future-proof the site the Development Application also allows for further expansion to over 1,700 car spaces in total. This is in addition to an extra 469 dedicated car spaces for retail and residential parking. In order to mitigate the shortfall in parking during the construction phase the three-storey multi-level carpark will be constructed first. Further, rail and bus services at the station will not be affected during the build. Should the Brisbane City Council approve the application, construction will begin in 2019.
addressed by the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services through vegetation management and selective tree planting. Finally, the Minister has made the determination the plan should include an active transport corridor south to Mt Nebo Road and instructed Council to undertake further community consultation on this matter. I am informed the Ferny Grove and Upper Kedron Residents Association is taking a keen interest in this matter and have conducted a survey of locals to gauge the community’s view on traffic management and access.
I was proud to present a cheque to Willmore Kindy recently and congratulate them on receiving a Small Assistance Grant from the Palaszczuk Government. The grant will be used to employ psychologists at the kindy to help the children develop resilience.
Ferny Grove & Upper Kedron Neighbourhood Plan
The Brisbane City Council last week adopted the Ferny Grove and Upper Kedron Neighbourhood Plan as amended by Infrastructure and Planning Minister Cameron Dick. This is the final part of the Call-In process begun in 2015 following the Council’s approval of a vast housing development without any community consultation in 2014. I have always believed it is only right that residents should have their say before Council approve such a large development on peoples’ doorstep. This is why the State Government directed the Council to engage in public consultation to create a new Neighbourhood Plan before any future development could take place in the southern sections of Upper Kedron. While the final plan is hardly reflective of residents’ wishes it does contain some concessions – mainly through Ministerial directives. The Minister had limited scope to affect the plan but what changes he has made reflect density, access and safety concerns. The total number of dwellings will still be determined by Council but the new plan now contains reduced density which will mean total lot numbers in any future developments will necessarily be reduced. The major fire threat which comes from building so many homes among bushland has also been www.hillsecho.com
