A Spec-tacular Sight

Do you have eyeglasses lying around that you no longer have any use for? Have you thought about donating them to the Lions ‘Recycle For Sight’ program? The Lions Club Australia collects used eyeglasses that are passed onto local Eyeglass Recycling Centres (LERC) for refurbishment. At the centre, they are sorted, graded and boxed for distribution to Optical Missions around the World. Simple refractive errors in sight can be easily corrected, improving people’s vision in low to middle income countries that lack basic eye care services. Over the 26 years that the Australian program has operated, the program has delivered over 7 million pairs of refurbished quality spectacles to men, women and children in need. Currently, our local Lions branch, the Golden Valley Keperra (GVK) Lions have a collection point set up at Willmore Kindergarten, 14 Iruka Street, Ferny Hills that has been inundated with donations from the community. ‘Paul from the GVK Lions has already been around to empty our collection box as it was full to the brim with donations. The generousity of our community is phenomenal,’ said Linda Fox, Educator at Willmore Kindergarden. If you would like to set up a collection point at your business or organisation, or have the GVK Lions come and collect your eyeglasses, please contact Paul Ryan at the GVK Lions (contact details are below.) Our Lions Clubs around the world have the same core areas of focus ensuring our Community Service work is not diminished. Volunteers are always needed to keep their programs going. If you would like to join the GVK Lions please contact Paul Ryan on cottontrees@bigpond.com or 0409 688 675.

Plant Up A Pot!

Kumbartcho Sanctuary and Nursery has a new initiative to encourage schools to sell native plants at their fete's. Unfortunately, too often well-meaning donations are introduced species which escape to become bushland weeds. Schools are asked to plan for their event by selecting and preparing their plants of choice 3-4 months before the fete as this will achieve the maximum return for their event. Members of the school community will come in on a nominated Saturday or Sunday morning and pot up the plants chosen into 6-inch pots and take them away to grow on. Schools will purchase the plants for $1 from Kumbartcho with the aim to sell them at the fete for $5. Contact Kim on kimp@ kumbartcho.org.au to coordinate the plants for your event.

Selected for State

There has been much excitement in the air at Arana Ascot Hockey Club with three club members having been selected to play on state level for Queensland.

The three members selected and the teams they have been chosen for are as follows: Kara Bradley (12years old): Queensland Under 13’s team and the Queensland Under 12’s School Girls team. Lara Pyle (12 years old): Captain of the Queensland Under 12’s School Girls team. She has also been selected as a Shadow player for the Queensland Under 13’s team. Georgia Harris (13 years old): Queensland Under 13’s team. The talented girls were chosen for the teams after attending rigorous trials against numerous other contenders. All the girls have been playing hockey from a young age. Now all their training has now paid off. The Australian School Girls Tournament kicked off on the 19th August in Bendigo. The Queensland team is excited to report a win of 4-1 over New South Wales with Lara scoring a hat trick achieving 3 of the 4 goals won for Queensland. Team sports can bring many benefits to children in terms of their development and social interactions. Upon asking the girls what they love most about the sport, they all expressed how much fun the game is. ‘I just love playing Hockey. The sport is loads of fun and I have made many new friends through our club,’ explains Lara. If you are interested in getting involved in the game of hockey or joining Arana Ascot Hockey Cub please contact Maria Pyle on 0413 048 060 or visit www.aranaascothockey.com.au

The Hills Players are now well into rehearsals for their upcoming production, ‘Good Help is So Hard to Murder’ by Pat Cook, arranged through Origin Theatrical. The cast of seven women (and one parrot) have been having fun practicing their southern accents for this entertaining comedy about family secrets, tea, murder and things that go bump in the night. Good Help is being ably directed by Margie Reid and will open on Friday 1st November, continuing for three more shows on 2nd, 8th and 9th November at St Matthews Church Hall, Church Road, Mitchelton. The Hills Players are always keen to welcome new members, whether you want to be on stage, behind the scenes or happy to just help however you can. You can also drop in during their rehearsal periods when they will be at the hall from 7pm every Monday and Wednesday night. The Bush Lemon from Kobble Creek

News from the Samford Museum

Local agricultural shows always remind us of times past such as pavilion horticultural entries and woodchopping.

A visitor to our museum recently came across a class of bush lemons in the citrus section at the Samford Show. He told us how this stall reminded him of a bush lemon tree in his grandparents’ garden. On a picnic train excursion to the Kobble Creek area in the 1920s - organised by the Grange Baptist Church - Mr Harry Massey noticed a bush lemon seedling. As bush lemons were a reveared tree to have in the garden, he dug the seedling up and transplanted it into his garden at Newmarket where it thrived. Exactly where the train stopped that day for the picnickers is unknown. This is because the train often stopped at convenient places other than the stations, as happened on this excursion. Timber from pioneers’ homestead selections was used for building their We’re not just a print shop! houses, farm buildings, fencing and firewood. Huge quantities of hardwood PRINT & COPY and softwood logs were sourced from the BUSINESS CARDS surrounding ranges and from within the BROCHURES & FLYERS greater Samford Valley for house building, A-FRAMES commercial buildings, railway sleepers PULL-UP BANNERS and bridge girders. VINYL BANNERS Demonstrations using the tools from the STATIONERY SUPPLIES timber industry are popular within school INK & TONER SUPPLIES groups as are wood chopping competitions at shows. Samford Museum plans to PRINTERS expand these timber demonstrations. Beware of Furry Jay Walkers!

Authorities are urging drivers to keep an eye out for koalas around the Moreton Bay Region in the coming weeks, with males on the march as the breeding season reaches its peak between August and November. Council has erected banners and electric message boards warning drivers to slow down in known koala movement corridors, one of which is in our region at the corner of Eatons Crossing and Bunya Roads in Draper. Council is also working with Energex and the Department of Transport and Main Roads to install banners on roadside light poles on Gympie Road in Lawnton, Old Gympie Road in Kallangur and South Pine Road in Albany Creek.

Simulator up and running!

Monthly news from the Brisbane Tramway Museum and the Ferny Grove Men’s Shed

The Brisbane Tramway Museum has a variety of Trams on display such as this FM Class In the late 1930’s and early 1940’s, the latest Brisbane trams were hailed worldwide as leaders in design. This was the FM Class—so named because for the first time, trams had Four Motors (FM) instead of the usual one at each end. The BCC started building this class in 1938 and over 150 were built over the following 3 decades . Together with their predecessors— the Drop Centres—these became the backbone of Brisbane’s growing tram fleet. They carried 110 passengers (as did the

Drop Centres), 64 being seated. The design featured sharply curved ends to facilitate passing on curves, air brakes, windup/ down windows and canvas doors/blinds at each entrance. With the 4 motors in operation, these trams were quite fast and folk-lore has it that one left Chermside Terminus (where the major shopping centre is located) and arrived at Light Street Depot (in Wickham Street about 1 kilometre beyond the Valley Baths) in just 11 minutes! The museum has the very first FM to be built—tram #400 which is still undergoing restoration and 429 which sees regular service on our normal open days. Several other trams of this model are in our storage shed. Our Tram Simulator is up and running technically and Men’s Shed members are building the driving cabin in which it will be installed. Soon, the Men of The Forest will re-commence the upgrading of our gardens, planting species which would have been native to our land ‘back when’ . The museum has recently played host to the local SES group for their Chain-Saw accreditation program being well away from houses. The noise factor is no problem on our grounds. The museum would like to have more crew members being trained. Anyone interested can contact the museum on 3351 1776. The museum is open to the public every Sunday afternoon from 12.30 (Weather permitting). It’s smiles all around at Arana Netball Club

With August came the end of netball fixtures and the start of finals. Saturday 24th August saw the first of Downey Park finals, with teams finishing in the top 4 in 8-team competitions playing in semi-finals.

Teams in 6-team competition played one extra game on 24thAugust. All grades had preliminary finals on 31stAugust, with Grand Final day scheduled for 7thSeptember.The following Arana Netball teams proceeded to play in the semi-finals – Arana 1, Div.6; Arana 4, Intermediate 6; Arana 5, Cadet 6; Arana 6, Cadet 8; Arana 7, 13Yrs Div.6; Arana 8, 12Yrs Div. 3; and Arana 9, 12Yrs Div.7. Arana 10 had an extra fixture game before the Preliminary Finals for their grade. The following teams then proceeded past the semifinal week – Arana 1, Arana 4, Arana 5, Arana 7, Arana 8, Arana 9, and Arana 10. Good luck to all teams as the finals

continue, and well done on the efforts of all Arana Netball players and coaches. Earlier in August, Arana hosted a visit by some of the Queensland Firebirds players at the courts in Leslie Patrick Park. This was well received by Arana players, and should have served as an inspiring and informative lead-up to their finals games. August also saw the Annual General Meeting for Arana Netball, with handover of positions becoming effective as of the September meeting, on Monday 16th September. Previous position holders will continue to assist those new to roles as needed. The club welcomes David Kerr, Kelly Hawes, Dale Robertson, and Ash Kerr to committee roles, and thanks goes to Meredith, Allison, and Jordan as they step down from committee roles at this time. Looking ahead, Presentation Night to round off the winter season is planned for Saturday evening, 14th September, at Gaythorne Bowls Club. Club members will be advised final details closer to this event. For young players from 7 years, Arana is holding a free introduction to netball clinic at the Arana Hills courts from 14th October to 12th November. Those interested should email arananetballregistrar@gmail.com. Many current players will keep up their skills in summer by playing in a more social night competition hosted by Q.C.N.A. at the Downey Park courts. With monthly club meetings continuing during summer, parents and senior players are encouraged to come to meetings to learn more about Arana Netball Club and to contribute to ideas and decisions. Meetings are held in the Hills District Community Centre meeting rooms (Dawson Parade, Arana Hills,) on the third Monday each month, commencing at 7.30pm.Further information about Arana Netball can be found on the Facebook page, on the web site www.arananetballclub. com.au, or by emailing arananetballclub@gmail.com.

Serving Up A Big Community Breakfast!

TaxArana is very excited to announce that they have teamed up with Picabeen Community Centre and the Older Women’s Network (OWNQ) to bring a community breakfast to the Hills area to support our most vulnerable community members. The Hills Community Breakfast Club will be held in TaxArana's front garden on the corner of Glenlee Street and Dawson Parade every Tuesday and Friday from 6:30am to 8am for local residents who may be struggling. Picabeen has noticed this year that there has been a significant increase in the number of people who are presenting at their centre who are homeless, it is hoped that this breakfast will serve as a point of connection and support for those people and other vulnerable people in the area. At this stage the breakfast will be funded by TaxArana. However, as it grows TaxArana would like to seek the support of the wider community to provide the breakfast items. TaxArana's Steve Brett was inspired to start this breakfast club after hearing of the good work that is happening in the Redcliffe area where a community breakfast has been supporting up to 50 people each morning. If any locals would like to volunteer with the weekly breakfasts, or come onboard as a produce sponsor, please contact Steve Brett on 3351 6111 or email info@taxarana.com

COUNSELLOR’S COLUMN with Robin Botic

In last month’s article, the idea was to generate a list of your ideal partner’s qualities, characteristics etc and to divide these into the SHOPPING LIST and REAL VALUES LIST. The next step was to see how you felt about each of those items on the list and to take note of what sort of thoughts or feelings they generated in you, this last requirement being about drawing your attention to unconscious and/or habitual negative thought patterns and as to where those thoughts trigger uncomfortable feelings in your body. Thoughts that have their basis in a root thought of ‘I’m not good enough’,‘ I’ve stuffed up or will’,‘I’m not approved of” etc are usually felt as nervousness, tightness, anxiety etc. There are six main regions in our bodies that are associated with particular types of thought patterns. For the purposes of this article, our focus is to just notice the thought, it’s effect and to implement mindfulness strategies that enable us to create distance between the conscious self that is observing these thoughts and the feelings they generate. When you are more conscious about why you are feeling what you are feeling you have a far better chance of not behaving in old familiar reactive and counter- productive ways. Thoughts are continually coming and going out of our minds but the ones that cause the most grief are those fear-based ones which we cling on to. They just seem to go round and round in our minds. The increasing intensity and suffering derived from this process is created by our amazing ability to keep coming up with a never-ending sequence of unpleasant scenarios. The human mind has evolved to be an excellent problem- solver but in situations like this we seem to use this wonderful capability in reverse. To demonstrate this if we use the thought of ‘not enough time’ we could be foreseeing endless possibilities of the consequences of this e.g. ‘Won’t find a partner in time’, ‘Won’t have anyone to grow old with, no children, no grandchildren, no-one to go on holidays with, no-one to enjoy retirement with, no-one to share special moments with, no-one to look after me when I’m sick, I’ll just be old and lonely’ and so on with accompanying imagery and emotional suffering attached. When this happens we can describe our state of mind as being obsessed with the thought, hooked or fused but whatever term we use, it is a state in which we think we cannot let go or get the thoughts out of our head. What makes this process worse for us is our natural desire to resist, deny or try to block what we find unpleasant and hurtful. In most situations, this is a sensible strategy but with obsessive thoughts, the opposite is the case. Furthermore, we judge ourselves about them, for having them and for not being able to let go of them. This is when counter-intuitive practices can

really work. Instead of resisting and judging, simply accept that you have the thought. There’s an old saying that fits here ‘Whatever you resist, persists and grows. Whatever you accept resolves, dissolves.’ To begin, just notice that you have the thought without judging it or yourself for having it. Tell yourself ‘It’s just a thought, no more, no less’, ‘I don’t have to act on it or feel anything about it’. ‘I can chose to give it as much or as little attention as I want’. It will pass like clouds in the sky or cars in the street outside; just gently observe that you have it and give it as little attention as you would distant passing traffic. It always helps to breathe gently, fully and slowly. I imagine the breath as a wave gently moving through my body, grounding and centering me. As it moves bit by bit, it washes the feeling down and out. You can also use this imagery to create space in and around the feeling, loosening, letting it go, just like a wave does with the sand on the shore. Coming in, going out. With awareness and practice you enable yourself to become less at the effect of these thoughts and the behaviour they usually engender. In practical terms less at the effect means that there is a decrease in intensity and frequency. You then have more energy and more time available to put into the value-adding aspects of your life. Try practising this. You can use it in a myriad of challenging situations not just in terms of what comes up for you with regard to the items on your list. With lists in mind, the next step to carry out is to compile yet another list of the qualities, values etc. You, yourself, then have to cross check it with your ideal partner list. Check off and note the commonalities.

Colour your Garden with Gerberas

from The Mitchelton & Districts Garden Club

Gerberas is the topic of the guest speaker, Pat Smith, at the meeting of the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club on 3rd October at the Enoggera Memorial Hall in Trundle Street. Pat Smith is a member of the Ipswich Horticultural Society. He has been growing gerberas for many years and has created new varieties through cross pollination. If you want a comparatively low care colourful plant in your garden, a gerbera is the one to grow. It is not prone to a lot of garden problems, is fairly waterwise and is guaranteed a long life. It is easily propagated through division of the crown or seeds. Given the correct conditions, gerberas will flower for many months through spring to winter. They prefer a sheltered position with well drained sandy soil to which plenty of organic matter has been added. For cut flowers, the gerbera is considered to be one of the best, but they need to be conditioned a day or two before going on display. Pat will have lots more to tell and there will be plants for sale at the meeting. The meeting commences after morning tea which is served at 9.45 a.m. Visitors and new members are most welcome. For more information please phone Pat, the President, on 3356 1256.

Cedar Woods launches ‘Boutique Lot’ release at Ellendale

Publicly-listed developer Cedar Woods Properties has launched the latest stage at its Ellendale community in Upper Kedron, offering the rare chance to build a brand-new home close to the Brisbane city centre for less than $500,000.

Cedar Glen at Ellendale comprises just 39 boutique homesites, ranging from 263sqm to 537sqm. Starting from $280,000, the lots are designed to meet the needs of buyers wanting affordability, low maintenance and a prime location. Purchasers will also benefit from the added incentive of having their fencing and front yard landscaping covered by Cedar Woods. The new homesites adjoin a planned neighbourhood shopping precinct with retail, a medical centre and childcare centre, adding a new level of convenience for buyers. Ellendale, located just 12 kilometres to the Brisbane CBD, has sold more than 300 homesites since launching in mid-2016, with its leafy streets and abundance of bushland appealing to a range of purchasers, from first home buyers to growing families and empty nesters. Homesites in Ellendale range from 300sqm to 3,000sqm, with land prices starting from $355,000 - a figure which is beyond the reach of some buyers, prompting Cedar Woods to design the new Cedar Glen release with those wanting to step on to the property ladder or downsize. "Ellendale is a diverse community, with a wide range of lot sizes and outlooks available, and this latest release further adds to that choice," said Cedar Woods' Senior Development Manager, Peter Starr. "We understand breaking into the property market can be hard for young homebuyers and the opportunities to secure a brand new, contemporary house and land for under $500,000 near the Brisbane city centre are few and far between. "As such, we have had a lot of interest from first home buyers looking for an entry level option and have designed this release to suit, with these purchasers also able to boost their deposit by accessing the State Government's $15,000 First Home Owners’ Grant." Mr Starr said, at the same time, more empty nesters and retirees were also looking for more compact homesites, allowing them to downsize within the area and stay close to friends and family. "These purchasers are looking to downsize their homesite to upsize their lifestyle or to unlock equity, and buying new is ideal as it ticks the box of low maintenance both now and into the future," he said. "Across the board, the size of homesites in Queensland is reducing, with State Government data showing lots in Brisbane are averaging 421sqm, which is a reflection of increasing demand for affordability, proximity to the city centre and changing lifestyles. "The modern couple and family are looking for a home that puts the emphasis on lifestyle, meaning they want to spend less time maintaining and more time enjoying where they live with work, restaurants, cafes, shops, schools, services and other conveniences all in easy reach." Mr Starr said builders were offering a range of savvy designs to suit boutique lots, so those who chose this option didn't have to compromise on space. "Clever contemporary design means buyers benefit from a spacious floor plan inside, which integrates with the backyard www.hillsecho.com

Bold Living home design for Cedar Glen, Ellendale

Ellendale at Upper Kedron features leafy streets

for indoor-outdoor living and entertaining," he said. "It is a smart and sustainable way of living, and is increasingly becoming a popular choice, particularly for those who don't have a large family living at home. "We are working with a number of Queensland's leading home builders, including Bold Living, to provide a range of house and land packages within our new Cedar Glen release and look forward to releasing those shortly." When complete, Ellendale will feature more than 900 homes set among significant green open space, with 40 per cent of the community to be dedicated to conservation area and parkland. More than 50 hectares of green open space has already been handed over to Brisbane City Council. The community is just four minutes from Ferny Grove Shopping Village and within two kilometres of three schools. Cedar Woods recently took the wraps off its first major parkland in the community, including a children's playground featuring an eight metre high climbing tower, slides, swings and merry-go-round, alongside a grassed recreation space with barbeque facilities and shaded picnic tables. For more information, please visit the Ellendale Sales Centre and Display Village, featuring a range of home designs from some of Queensland's leading builders, open Saturday to Wednesday from 11am to 4pm at 324 Canvey Road in Upper Kedron, visit ellendale.com.au or call 1300 720 858. The Priority Report

Time to take advantage of low interest rates!

Lending conditions are in a pretty unique place right now. As can be seen in the graph below, interest rates in Australia haven’t been this low in decades. We haven’t seen rates like these since the 1950’s.

2022 Smoke Alarm Countdown

Deadline for QLD Smoke Alarm Compliance. It’s closer than you think!!

Every rental property in Queensland must meet the new smoke alarm rules by 31st December 2021. For more information about what will make your investment property compliant contact our office on 07 3164 7000.

Rates were already reaching record lows when the cash rate hit 2.75% in May 2013. It then spent almost three years at a low of 1.5% from August 2016. Now the cash rate has dropped to 1%, and many economists are predicting yet another rate cut—or even two—later this year and early next year. While this is all pretty bad news for savers, Barefoot Investor Scott Pape says this is an exceptional opportunity for borrowers, particularly as many Australians have huge amounts of debt. Pape reminds Australians not to be complacent and expect that the low interest rates will be around forever. Borrowers should make the most of it and start paying off their loans in earnest.

As a landlord you can be inclined to view your investments through a lens of “dollars and cents”, which doesn’t always work in the tenants’ favour. 4 ways to be an awesome landlord 1. Be organised - helps keep track of request, repairs and goings-on throughout the tenancy. 2. Be reliable and trustworthy - you don’t have to be on hand at all hours of the day and night but endeavour to be reliable and quick in your responses. 3. Be quick with repairs and maintenance - damaged items within a rental property can quickly sour the tenants enjoyment of your property. 4. Be compassionate - sometimes accidents happen and mishaps take place.

Feature Welcome to The Hills Echo’s annual spring health and wellbeing guide, The Health Hub. This edition is jam packed with health and wellbeing news and information from The Hills Districts and Surrounds. Look out for Edition Two of this feature in our October issue.

6 reasons to hit the trails this weekend

Tired of running mindlessly on the treadmill at the gym? Or are you sick of running along the same bitumen road? Well, not only do we have some of the most incredible bushlands to explore around The Hills District, but there are also lots of great reasons to move your running sessions outdoors. Checkout just some of the benefits that trail running can bring to your health below. 1. Improved Practical Endurance: While running on a treadmill keeps you working out on a flat, stable, consistent surface, trail running is variable. This is a great boost to your practical endurance and will work muscle groups you didn’t even know you had. 2. Increase Leg Strength: Trail running pushes your muscles in a variety of challenging ways. Your muscles will grow and adapt to incline and decline running, and you’ll gain explosive speed from jumping up and off rocks and other natural obstacles. 3. Burn More Calories: The increased effort from the

elevation and altitude will help your body burn more calories. If you want to lose weight quickly, you’ll burn fat much quicker doing high-intensity training on bushland trails than flat-surfaced runs. 4. Improve Your Balance: Anyone can run straight without losing their balance, but trail running isn’t quite as easy. Learning to navigate rocks, roots and all the other aspects of nature will provide you with real-world running skills. 5. Take A Mental Break: Trail running and walking has been shown to decrease worry, anxiety, and negative thoughts. Connect with nature in a meaningful, relaxing way, forget your hectic life and responsibilities and hit the trails! 6. Enjoy A Stress-Free Workout: Out on the trails, you don’t have to stress about crowds or traffic. Just you and the dirt path…and occasionally the wildlife. If you are interested in joining a local trail running group, check out the Upper Kedron trail runners group at www. facebook.com/UpperKedronTrailRunners/

The Ritual HQ Difference

Ritual HQ have been in the Hills District for just over 18 months and has already established themselves as something different in the fitness industry, not only inside of the gym, but also in the local community. On site, their personalized approach to membership is helping give confidence, support and direction to those who may have once felt lost inside a gym. Every member is provided with a personalized training program and access to small group training classes that are limited in size to allow for high quality coaching - not just instruction. Ritual HQ is home to an experienced team of seven coaches that know their members names, provide high quality one-on-one and group training, as well as specialized nutrition advice. For these reasons, this is an extensive and complete fitness service. In the community, Ritual’s own “RHQ Army” can be found at local events lending a spare set of hands where they are needed most. From the Easter Egg Hunt at Teralba Park to school breakfasts, fetes and colour runs, this team of volunteers - made up of coaches and members alike - have been helping community events run with a little more manpower. This is based on the Ritual HQ owners’ strong belief in giving back to the community. Helping members establish habitual training and nutrition habits, providing a highly personalized service, and giving back to the community are just a few characteristics that define Ritual HQ as a different experience in your search for health and wellbeing. Treating mental health and cognitive difficulties

Many mental disorders are associated with disrupted cognitive function including difficulties in attention, concentration and memory. These issues can impact the ability to live independently, engage in day-to-day tasks and to manage social interactions. However, Felisa Golingi, a Clinical Neuropsychologist at Pine Rivers Private Hospital, says an array of treatment options are available. Firstly, Dr Golingi says combining standard treatments targeting mental health issues, for example psychopharmacological treatments, with cognitive behavioural interventions for addressing cognitive difficulties is an important avenue for clinical treatment. “Growing empirical evidence demonstrates group skills-based psychosocial interventions are valuable components of treatment which alleviate cognitive difficulties and the associated psychosocial impacts,” Dr Golingi said. “A review of psychosocial interventions have identified common elements across treatment packages with positive outcomes.” Dr Golingi said these treatments include psychoeducation & training in concrete skills - such as organisation and planning strategies, time management and goal setting. Dr Felisa Golingi “An emphasis on implementing these strategies in one’s own daily life, and benefits of mindfulness and emotion regulation skills training can address emotional and behavioural factors, influencing cognitive functions. These key components of this type of therapy have been incorporated into the ‘Optimising your Potential Program’ which is available at Pine Rivers Private Hospital and focuses on developing: • Concrete skills around organisation, planning, goal setting, time management, task management, and memory strategies • Psychological tools around managing unhelpful thoughts and regulating emotion • How to implement this learning in interpersonal contexts and vocational contexts. The importance of self care

You work hard to take care of your family and friends, but how much time do you actually invest in taking care of yourself? Making your needs a priority will help you—and the others around you—experience a better quality of life. If you frequently feel run down, stressed, overwhelmed or tired, make sure you spend some time on YOU. Here are a few health tips:

Prioritise exercise

Taking just 30 minutes out of your day to exercise can get your heart rate up, strengthen key muscle groups, release endorphins to give your mood a boost and help you get in shape.

Eat for health

Make a meal plan for yourself or just cook up larger batches of healthy recipes when you have time, so you always have something when things get busy. Your Curves coach can help with strategies for healthy eating.

Sleep

Most adults need between 7 and 9 hours of sleep each night to tackle the day with more energy and motivation.

Relax on purpose

Meditation and relaxation exercises may help you wind down after a busy day and feel more grounded. When it comes to self-care, at Curves Mitchelton you can receive a 30-minute total body workout, a supportive environment and a healthy eating plan. We’ll give you support to reboot - for yourself AND those you love.

‘Only when one cannot sleep does one know how long the night is’

Tired of not sleeping? Anyone who’s ever experienced an occasional bout of insomnia can relate to this. Daily stress and pressures, body aches and pains, uncomfortable beds or pillows, and a host of other issues can keep us from getting enough quality sleep. Sleep is ESSENTIAL to good health. It is one of the most important functions of the brain. Through it, our bodies rest, recharge and regenerate for the next day’s challenges. Here are some helpful tips for a better night’s sleep: • Exercise daily. • Limit sugar, caffeine and alcohol especially in the evening. • Reduce screen time, at least one hour before bed. • Go to bed and wake up every morning at the same time. • Keep your bedroom cool, dark and a comfortable temperature. • Invest in a mattress that provides support for your spine. • Purchase a contoured pillow - this provides support for your neck curve and a chance for your muscle to really relax. • Use a form of Magnesium to help with muscle aches . • Rub lavender oil onto the soles of your feet at night.

Everyone was a beginner at some point

With over 20 years combined experience in the fitness industry, Enhance PT is a Group Fitness and Mobile Personal Training service based in the North of Brisbane. They are passionate about helping people reach their fitness goals without all the yelling and intimidation you might find elsewhere. Enhance PT fosters a strictly non-competitive environment where classes are lead by experienced and mature female trainers only. They want to get to know you personally – you are never just another client. Owner and operator Miranda Pardon uses her age as a selling point. “I’m not a 25 year old gym bunny. I’m on the cusp of fifty and I don’t look like Michelle Bridges. I started my journey into health and fitness in my early forties and I’ve never felt happier, healthier, stronger or more energized in my life. I know that some people feel reluctant to start an exercise program because they feel intimidated by that hard-core gym-type image. At Enhance PT we want to change that perception. Fitness is not a one size fits all equation and the truth of the matter is that you don’t have to work out like a crazy person to achieve results. I personally don’t enjoy going to gyms and I certainly don’t respond well to anyone yelling at me while I am exercising. We like to have fun and have a laugh along the way.” Enhance PT offer a variety of general group fitness classes, yoga classes along with two special interest groups; Mums with Bubs and Over 55’s. Classes are run across the week at both Arana Hills and Samford. For further information visit enhancept.com.au or find them on Facebook.

A Haven of High-Quality Skincare

Amisi is the Hills District’s very own miniature skincare empire. All products are handmade in Bunya, and are designed to be simple to use, effective and affordable. Healthy, glowing and naturally nourished skin is their guarantee! Of course, there’s a method behind this magic. Small batches of products are derived from cold pressed plant oils, clay, oatmeal, floral waters, and extracts of fruits, herbs and flowers. Additionally, organic, Australian-grown aloe juice is used in the place of water as it is a more nutrient-rich ingredient for skin. To incorporate the highest naturally known source of Vitamin C into the brand, Kakadu Plum was introduced. This extract is harvested wild by Indigenous communities, exclusively in the Kimberley’s, Northern Territory and Arnhem Land. Currently, it is included in the Sandalwood and Vanilla Moisture Cream. This artisan brand sources the highest quality ingredients from local and international markets of ethical and sustainable suppliers. For instance, the award-winning Gardenia Body Balm uses Shea butter that is organic and a product of fair trade. Using traditional methods, a co-operation of women in Africa craft it by hand. Each sale enables them to support their families and communities. Is Stress Wiping You Out?

Did you know that a little stress is healthy? It challenges you and makes you stronger. But stresses are not always easy to resolve and your stress response may be constantly activated. Stress without adequate recovery may substantially affect your energy levels leaving you tired and fatigued. The average adult juggles a multitude of commitments leaving little time for relaxation. Your brain is the first organ that senses stress. It responds by sending messages to your adrenal glands that then release Cortisol to help you deal with stress. With long term stress, the brain may try to self-regulate itself by toning down these signals as a form of protection. This leads to low energy and can often wipe you out. Local Acupuncturist and Naturopath, Patricia McNab, is well aware of how stress affects our body. Over the last 30 years, Patricia has helped many people who find life gets too tough. Legal Health Check-ups Going to a Lawyer for legal advice is usually the last thing you want to spend your valuable time and money on. With online legal resources readily available, a ‘do it yourself’ option may seem easier at first glance. However, there is no ‘one size fits all’ approach to the law. All legal situations are unique and many various areas of law overlap. It is important to seek confidential legal advice from a trusted advisor who can address your specific legal situation, which may include some or all of the following: • Employment and Self-Employment (Unfair Dismissal, Adverse Action, Industrial Disputes, Underpayment of Wages) • Work Health and Safety (Compliance, Incidents, Investigations) • Personal Injury, Workers’ Compensation, Motor Vehicle Accidents • Family (Separation, Domestic Violence, Property & Finance, Parenting) • Superannuation, Income Protection Insurance, Life Insurance • Estate Planning and Administration (Wills, Trusts, Enduring Power of Attorney, Advanced Health Directive, Probate) • Property (Purchasing, Selling, Commercial and Residential Tenancy Agreements) • Dispute Resolution and Litigation • Traffic Offences (Drink Driving) • Debt Recovery, Bankruptcy, Insolvency It is always best practice to be preventative rather than reactive by seeking legal advice at an early stage. The worry and stress caused by an unaddressed legal issue also has the potential to negatively impact upon your health and wellbeing. It is the same as avoiding a painful toothache. Leaving a legal issue too late can be costly both personally and financially for you as well as your loved ones. If you are experiencing legal aches and pains, contact your legal adviser for a check up.

Ryan News from your Federal Member for Ryan: Julian Simmonds MP

New grants to protect and enhance our local environment

As the Federal Member for Ryan, I’m listening to the community and working to deliver better roads, schools, healthcare and important local services. I’ve got a practical plan for our area that includes protecting our local lifestyle and environment. Not only are we investing in local conservation and restoration projects, we are cleaning up rivers and catchments, clearing weeds, protecting wildlife, and fighting pests and feral species in the process. We are also improving parks and reserves. By directly supporting the volunteer groups that do so much of the works, I know local communities get the best outcomes. The new Morrison Government program that has been launched will assist our local community to strengthen and foster the environment with new project grants. The grants will assist in small, community-led environment projects that address local environmental priorities. Under the Communities Environment Program, the grants will provide up to $150,000 for the Ryan Electorate in 2019-20 for up to 20 projects. Grants will range from $2,500 to $20,000 per project. Julian with his son Theo recently at The Communities Environment Program is about backing and empowering National Tree Day. the local community to deliver environmental outcomes. Everton News

from your State Member for Everton TIM MANDER We Remember I’m always moved when I attend the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Day at Gaythorne RSL Sub-branch. Every year in August, Australians pause to remember the service and sacrifice of those who fought in the Vietnam War. This year marks the 53rd anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan, and it was a privilege to share this special day with some of our local service men and women. More than 60,000 Australian servicemen and women were deployed to Vietnam Between 1962 and 1975, with 521 killed in service. Many of those who survived returned home with both physical and emotional scars. Unfortunately, on their return, our Vietnam veterans did not receive the acknowledgement and recognition they deserved. As Australians, it’s important that we take the time to reflect and remember those who gave so much for our nation. ‘Evergreens’ visit to Parliament House It was great to host the ‘Evergreens’ from St Williams Catholic Church, Keperra for their recent visit to Qld Parliament house. Throughout the year ,this sprightly group attends special outings. It was a great opportunity to take them on a tour and enjoy a chat over a cup of tea and cake.

Dickson News

from your Federal Member for Dickson PETER DUTTON

Federal Government Grant Opportunities There are a number of Federal Government grant programs now open for applications. All schools in Dickson are eligible to apply for funding for local projects through the Local Schools Community Fund. Local organisations have the chance to apply for up to $20,000 funding through Round 5 of the popular Stronger Communities Program and there is also the chance for organisations to receive funding to undertake environmental projects in our local area as well. If you would like more information about any of these programs, please contact my electorate office on 3205 9977 or peter.dutton.mp@aph.gov.au What’s Happening in Dickson The roof has just gone on the university in Petrie and construction is steaming ahead. The first intake of students is expected to be at the start of next year. This is fantastic news for everyone in our community and will give young people in our local area more opportunities to further their education. The NBN roll-out continues and 95% of premises in Dickson are now ready to connect. I am continuing to work with NBN Co to ensure the whole electorate receives the best possible service. Please be mindful that there are a number of scammers claiming to be from NBN Co actively seeking to gain access to personal information. Learn how to protect yourself from scammers impersonating NBN Co at nbnco.com.au/scamadvice We have successfully eliminated many mobile black spots in

our community through the Coalition Government’s Mobile Black Spot Program and I am working hard to eliminate the rest. Please let me know of any mobile black spots that you’re aware of. A dangerous intersection in Petrie, the corner of Eucumbene Drive and Narangba Road, has just received federal government funding through the Coalition Government’s black spot program to have traffic lights installed. If there are any dangerous sections of road or intersections that you are aware of, either in the Hills District, or elsewhere in Dickson, please let me know, so I can submit to the next round of black spot funding. By working together, we can make our roads safer. Heroes of Dickson I am interviewing locals who have done amazing things for our community with my “Heroes of Dickson” video series. You can catch up with all the previous heroes I’ve interviewed by heading to the videos section on my Facebook page at www. facebook.com/peterduttonmp. If there’s someone you would like to nominate as a hero of Dickson, please get in touch. My contact details are below. What’s important to you? I want to know what’s important to you. I’m working hard to make our community even better but I can’t do it on my own. I need your help to make sure we get the priorities right for our community. With your help, and by working together, I know we can get the upgrades, facilities and opportunities our community needs to be even better. Please get in touch with me at peter.dutton.mp@aph.gov.au or 3205 9977 to let me know your priorities.

Drop in to my next Mobile Office

I am coming up to 2500 visits in my mobile office and have helped thousands of residents with local issues. If you see me out and about with my caravan, please drop in. Habitat News

Over the past few years I have funded the installation of habitat boxes in the ward. The boxes are placed in parks and adjacent to our local creeks and are designed specifically for fauna native to the local area. Recently three boxes have been installed at the new habitat site on Ithaca Creek at Nathan Avenue, Ashgrove. Further to this, a new innovative approach to managing the risk of dead trees on public land is starting in The Gap Ward. Rather than removing dead trees in parks, Council will turn the trees into ‘wildlife habitat high-rises’. These habitats are carved into the dead trees; micro bats are one of the species that are attracted to this type of habitat. I am always looking for new opportunities to plant trees, if you would like a tree scoped for outside your property or a whole street tree planting, please contact me at the ward office and arrange an inspection.

The Ferny Report Mark Furner M.P.

State Member for Ferny Grove

Free Apprenticeships & Traineeships The Palaszczuk Government is all about creating jobs which people want in the industries that Queensland needs. So far, the government has done this through giving employers payroll tax relief and removing the barriers to hiring more staff. Now the Queensland Government is building on this record by announcing that it will fund 60,000 free apprenticeships and traineeships for Queenslanders under the age of 21 across 139 skill-shortage industries from electrical and plumbing to healthcare and hospitality. University is not the right fit for everyone. Parents who are worried about their kids’ future can get them a ticket to a trade. For more information, call our Apprenticeship Hotline on 1800 210 210. Ferny Grove Sports Fields Update Construction on the new change rooms at the Ferny Grove Sports Fields is expected commence shortly. AFL Queensland has been spearheading the project with two separate grants from the Palaszczuk Government totalling over $600,000. The new facility will be able to be accessed by Cricket, Netball, Hockey and Australian Rules. The new change rooms are essential to meet the growing needs of the sports on site and will cater for the increased number of females participating in sports across the board locally. Construction of the new facility and upgrades to the ALF field lighting is due to be complete by the start of the 2020 AFL season.

Congratulations to the Coach Dayel Wyatt and the Ferny Grove Falcons Senior AFL team who won their first ever final by defeating Cooparoo last month
