Next in Line for the Queen’s 100th Birthday Letter
Reaching 100 years of age is an accomplishment in itself—not to mention a milestone that I’m sure many of us hope to reach someday and for Joyce Powell, this milestone lands on the 30th October.
Recently, the Hills Echo team met with a couple of Joyce’s children to get the lowdown on her fascinating life as she approaches her 100th year birthday. A lady of Cornish descent, Joyce Lorraine Powell used to be a resident at 142 Dawson Parade, Keperra, from 1951 to 2010—that’s 59 years! Back in her golden days, Dawson Parade was a dirt track, surrounded by farming land and commission housing. Joyce now resides in Monnah Park Retirement Village due to health reasons. Unfortunately, adult life has never been a smooth ride for Joyce. As a single-mother, whose husband died in 1960 of war-related illness, Joyce raised nine children. She did not have the luxury of family support around her, had five children aged under five at the time, and was constantly under the pump. Debbie—Joyce’s daughter—reveals that her mother cannot remember anything from Debbie’s first year of life because of shock from her husband’s death (her birth and his death were only months apart). However, Joyce has since been rewarded with 16 grandkids, 23 great grandkids, and 2 great great grandkids! Also, seven of her own children still live locally and visit her whenever possible. It was them who filled us in on Joyce’s involvement in the community we share today. Joyce was a foundation member at the Everton Park Bowls Club , a member of the Mitchelton and Districts garden club
and also a regular visitor to the local library as she was an avid reader. Whilst with the Everton Park Bowls Club, she took part in many trips interstate to places such as Tasmania, the Northern Territory, South Australia and New South Wales which she really enjoyed. However, it’s safe to say gardening was one of Joyce’s greatest passions, along with bowling and sewing, but ultimately her biggest passion is family. ‘I value my big family the most and love our family gatherings. Many have stayed in the area and all remain very close and visit me with their families’ said Joyce. Pat, one of her children, describes Joyce as an ‘amazing person’ and mother, and says that even though she never re-married, she has lived a ‘wonderful life’. And a remarkably long one at that! Happy birthday Joyce!

Cash in your containers for the Scouts
COVID-19 has not been kind to our local community organisations with the pandemic bringing key fundraising activities such as Bunnings and Anaconda Sausage Sizzles to a halt. For the Grovely-Mitchelton Scouts, this has been exactly the case.
The Grovely-Mitchelton Scouts utilise their fundraising revenue to support on-going costs of resources, such as hiking and camping equipment, water sports (canoe/ kayak) which allows the group to provide outdoor experiences for its youth members. However, with the cessation of their key fundraising activities, their revenue from fundraising this year is very low. Nevertheless, our local Scouts are a persistent lot and they currently have an initiative up and running called the ‘Containers for Change Scheme’ that can benefit their organisation and raise much needed funds.
Eligible beverage containers
Under this scheme, the Scouts are asking the local community to drop off any 10c refundable ‘containers for change’ items (eligible items are shown in image) into the big red bin that is located at their den at 170 Blaker Street, Keperra (accessed easily via Lesina Street). The money raised from ‘cashing in’ the containers will help boost the fundraising revenue for the group. Most eligible containers have the 10c symbol on container for example aluminium drink cans, poppers, beer, spirit small bottles, flavoured milks, juice drinks, etc. However, no lids or straws are allowed and please do not place general rubbish in bins - including plastic bags! So, for all those small numbers of containers for change that you would have otherwise popped in your general recycling bin, why not drop past Grovely-Mitchelton Scout den to their red bin and support this wonderful community organisation. If you have a large volume of containers, email Anna on gl@grovelymitch.scoutsqld. com.au to arrange a time to deposit quickly into bin. In addition, other Scouting groups are also taking part in this intitatives and red bins can also be found at the Enoggera Scout Group and the Wahminda Park Scout Group. Treasure Hunting at Moreton Bay Garage Sales
There’s no better feeling than finding some pre-loved treasure at a bargain price and this year’s Moreton Bay Region Garage Sale Trail on November 21st and 22nd is shaping up to be a wonderful weekend of sustainable shopping.
Mayor Peter Flannery encouraged people to get involved, but emphasised the need to abide by social distancing and hygiene guidelines. ‘Garage sales are a great way to give unused items around your house a second life and by reusing things we reduce the amount of goods going to landfill as waste, so this is a fantastic event,’ Flannery said. ‘We’ll put up a page on Council’s website listing the locations of people who register to participate in the event but I again want to remind people of the need to take personal responsibility for their hygiene during this pandemic.’ Garage Sale Trail is a not-for-profit social enterprise founded by Sydney mates, Darryl Nichols and Andrew Valder. It seeks to educate Australians on the importance of reuse, and the need to take individual responsibility for the impact of our consumption habit whilst also building stronger, more connected and more resilient communities. Currently, in its tenth year, the program has grown from a grassroots idea in Bondi Beach where it started in 2010 and is now powered by over 140 councils nationally. ‘Selling stuff you no longer need at a Garage Sale Trail is a great way to do your bit for the environment and meet some of your neighbours at the same time, which is important in such an unusual year, ’said Mr Flannery. ‘Last year it was great to see families and even neighbours come together to host sales, some garage sales even raised funds for charities including one that helped build a school in Kenya.’ So if you have a wardrobe that is overflowing with unused clothes or perhaps you have a pile of items clogging up the garage, why not become a seller at this years’ Garage Sale Trail? More information can be found at www.garagesaletrail.com.au Did you know? According to Gumtree’s 2019 Secondhand Economy Report, 89% of Australians have unwanted stuff and 33% admit to throwing unwanted items in the bin. These unwanted items are valued at over $43 billion in total Australia-wide.

More than Just a Hobby At only 15 years of age, Paige Willis has achieved the outstanding feat of earning an Australian Scout Medallion!
As a resident of Upper Kedron and a member of GrovelyMitchelton Scouts since 2013, Paige dedicates one night a week to showing her Scouts family what she’s made of—and she has no intention of quitting anytime soon. According to Paige, the best part about Scouts is making new friends and learning new skills. Not only is Scouts an ongoing educational experience for Paige, it is also somewhat of a family affair—her dad is her Scout leader (Quokka) and her brother attends the weekly meetings by their side. ‘My favourite camp of all time,’ reveals Paige, ‘was the Triple SSS camp in 2018 because everyone—over 1000 people—sang Scout leader Troy Willis, Paige Willis with her Australian Scout happy birthday to my little brother. His face went as red as Medallion and Branch Commissioner of Scouts, Chris Foreman a lobster!’ However, for Paige, the best—not to mention, the most rewarding—aspect of Scouts is earning badges from developing new skills and abilities. Earning the Individual Sportsman Badge was Paige’s most enjoyed effort, as she had the opportunity to show everyone the sport she once played. Her most challenging effort, on the other hand, was earning the Adventurer Badge, or ‘Green Biscuit’. This involved teaching knots, fire safety, hygiene, and survival skills, as well as embarking on a ‘2-night activity’ mid-COVID-19. During this, Paige slept in a tent in her backyard and did three 10km hikes over three days. If that’s not determination, I don’t know what is! Another badge Paige has gained is the Pioneer Badge, which requires refined skills in knots, fire safety, navigation, promise and law knowledge, along with knowledge about breaking the cycle of bullying. As you can see, such awards don’t come easy for Scouts, with Paige working to strengthen her skillset and secure badges for four long years before earning the Australian Scout Medallion. But Paige was not alone in the process; she had support from her dad, of course, along with an especially encouraging boy named Daniel, and her best friend Tamsyn, who Paige met at Scouts six years ago. Tamsyn is also climbing up the ranks at Scouts in order to earn the Medallion! At Grovely-Mitchelton Scouts, not only club members, but also the local community reap the rewards. A big part of being a successful Scout is putting in the hard yards to help out local businesses and residents—so, community service! Recently, Paige completed a whopping 10 hours of community service; four hours of which were spent at an orientation day on a weekend for her old school, with the remainder being used up during clean-up time at the Scout Den. Each minute brought her that one step closer to earning the Australian Scout Medallion. Congratulations to Paige for an extraordinary achievement! Hot Stone Massage

GRAB THAT GRANT! Welcome our monthly column, Grab that Grant, which provides invaluable information about accessing and applying for funding. This information is brought to you by local grants guru, Carolyn McCall, from Little Project Management Company, who has a wealth of knowledge Carolyn McCall and an insight into the industry.

‘In conversation with the community’
We are very lucky in the Hills District to have so many incredible non-for-profit organisations supporting our community. This month, I was lucky enough to chat with two of them—Picabeen Community Association and Willmore Community Kindergarten & Preschool—to find out how they access grants and find some common themes that we could all learn from their success. 1. Develop strong community relationships – Picabeen Community Association works side by side with the community, local organisations, and other neighbourhood centres. Being able to connect with like-minded organisations has enabled them to establish long-lasting relationships and create funding partnerships that align with their mission to support our community. It is important to develop strong connections in the community in order to better understand local needs and to explain these to potential funders. Next time you drive past George Willmore Park along Ferny Way, keep an eye out for the beautiful mural created by the children at Willmore Kindergarten. Working closely with the Moreton Bay Regional Council—this project’s funders—the kindergarten’s 3-to-5 year-olds wanted to use their voice to save the bees. The mural ‘Bee Kind’ encourages the community to grow flowers for the bees to pollinate and support one another, but it is also there to simply put a smile on people’s faces.

2. Follow your strengths – Over the years, Willmore
Kindergarten has delivered several innovative initiatives with a strong focus on resilience, inclusion, and strengthening children’s voices in the community. These themes have played a pivotal role in their grant applications, contributing significantly toward securing funding for the organisation. As an example, they are currently on the lookout for funding for wall panels to dampen background noise. This will help support those with sensory needs and hearing sensitivities and will put Willmore at the forefront of inclusion in education.
3. Spend time engaging your volunteers – Volunteers who
are thoroughly engaged and provided with meaningful work contribute to an organisation’s success—and not to mention, will also enjoy the ride! Picabeen have an active volunteer program—available to both community members and students—that ensures each and every person feels welcome and is asked about what drives them to succeed. Similarly, Willmore has an active volunteer community made up of parents, including an active grants team! Volunteers are able to inject their own personality into their positions so they can really shine. I would love to hear from more organisations doing interesting things – if you want to chat about grants, tell me about programs you are running, or just want to say hello, please contact me at carolyn@lpmcompany.com.au

Serving up a good dose of community spirit
You may have remembered, we published a story this time last year regarding The Hills Community Breakfast Club - a free community breakfast at TaxArana in Arana Hills to help the most vulnerable within our community.
The Hills Community Breakfast Club was a collaboration between Arana Hills local Steve Brett, the Picabeen Community Centre and the Older Women’s Network (OWNQ), however this year the breakfast has transitioned to a lunch at the new location of the Picabeen Community Centre. The free lunch is designed to help support our most vulnerable community members, through not only providing a warm meal, but offering access to support and information. It is also an opportunity for socially struggling people within our community to engage and connect with others. Steve Brett, was inspired to start the club after hearing of the good work that is happening in the Redcliffe area where a community breakfast has been supporting up to 50 people each morning. ‘I was inspired by the people who run the Redcliffe Breakfast Club and I began to wonder if there was a need for a similar need for assistance for homeless and disadvantaged people in the local area,’ said Steve. While it is difficult to accurately pinpoint the number of people who are currently homeless in our region, Picabeen Community Centre has revealed that there has been a significant increase in the number of people who are presenting at their centre who have become homeless in recent months. Homelessness is not a choice and can be the result of many social and economic factors, such as domestic violence,

addictions, physical or mental health and loss of employment. The community lunch takes place at Picabeen Community Centre, 22 Hoben Street, Mitchelton every Tuesday from noon. If you have a business that would like to help out as a produce sponsor or if you Pam Kingsford-Smith and Ann would like to volunteer, Gadsby from the Older Women’s please contact 3354 2555 Network manning the BBQ at The or email info@picabeen. Researching the Convict in your Family!
By Susie der Kinderen from the Queensland Family History Society
Recently I walked past a local liquor shop and saw a promotion of a new wine label, 19 Crimes. The wine label has used the original gaol photographs of a number of convicts transported to Australia for their crimes. This put me in mind of my research for my convict ancestors. How I would have loved to see one of my bad boys or my bad girl on a wine label. If you have convicts in your family history there is so much digitally available for you to research them thoroughly, although not everything is on the internet. If they were convicted at The Old Bailey you can download the transcript of the court case listing the crime, the names of the police and witnesses and personal details. There are numerous websites that list the ship name, the departure and arrival dates and the names and number of convicts that were transported. The destination of the ships include NSW, Norfolk Is, Moreton and Tasmania. The NSW Colonial Secretary records often show who and where the convict was assigned to. There are records of a convicts Permission to marry and their TOL (tickets of leave). Queensland Family History Society has a print library that contains a number of resources that include the Log of Logs, Musters and Lists of NSW 1800-1802 and many published local histories that are very useful for researching your convict or early settler. Give us a call on 3355 3369 or come and visit at 58 Bellevue Avenue, Gaythorne. More information available on www.qfhs.org.au

Mastering the Cabochon Cut
News from The Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club
Free form Agate Cabochons from QLD The Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club has opened up a new workshop session to cater for the number of members wishing to use the facilities. The new session is from 9am to noon on a Saturday mornings, as the club is on a limit of seven members who can use the workshop machinery in a work session. To ensure the club does not exceed the number of members per session, members need to book into a session prior to coming to the workshop. The club is still operating the Thursday morning session from 9am to noon, as well as 1pm to 4pm on a Saturday. Recently, new members joined the club who came from Chile, Japan and Switzerland. They are amazed Thunder-Egg Agate from at the variety of cutting North QLD material that is so freely available in Australia. Several of the Swiss family members accompanied the Gem Club on their recent trip to Chinchilla in search of petrified wood. The Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club teaches all new members how to cut a cabochon and once they have mastered this they can make variations to the standard shape in the stones they cut. There are double cabochons, fancy cabochons, free form cabochons, and the shapes are varied. With the use of plastic and metal templates, these various shapes of cabochons are possible. The hardest part of fancy cabochons is shaping, grinding, and sanding inside curves. It takes a while for a new member to achieve these shapes without a mistake happening. By attaching a cabochon blank to a dop stick (various size of dowel) the control of shaping the stone is made easier. Cabochon blanks are generally attached to dop sticks by using sealing wax. To remove the stone when completed it is a matter of placing the stone and dop stick in the freezer section of a fridge for about fifteen minutes. More details about the Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club can be found on their website at www.mitcheltondistrictsgemclub. wordpress.com or Facebook Page: Mitchelton and District Gem Club Inc. If you would like to have a chat to someone regarding the hobby, please do not hesitate to contact John on 3351 1038 or Lloyd on 3351 2093.

Click, Clack! Click, Clack! Pictured is the Enoggera tram on its final day – travelling to Chermside on Sunday 1st December, 1968.
While the very last tram journey took place in Brisbane the following year on 13th April, 1969 (over 50 years ago!), this would be the last service that took place in the Enoggera area. Who out there remembers when trams were an iconic feature of Brisbane’s transport network and way of life? Who still has some memorabilia from those days – such as photos, tickets, an old The Enoggera Tram on its last day running, going to timetable or something of the likes? Chermside. Photo taken 1st December 1968. Feel free to share your memories with us. Visit our Facebook page or email enoggerahistory@ gmail.com We’d love to hear from you! Remember: You can still re-live such memories from yesteryear by visiting the wonderful Brisbane Tramway Museum on Tramway Street, Ferny Grove – next door to the Grove Sports Club. The centre is open to the public every Sunday from 1pm to 4pm. For enquiries phone, 3351 1776. And don’t forget: the Enoggera & Districts Historical Society Inc. has just re-opened its history display to the local community each Thursday morning from 9.30am. Just visit the Enoggera Memorial Hall in Wardell Street (parking in Trundle Street). Social distancing and COVID-19 rules apply, but you are most welcome to drop in for a look and a cuppa. Finally, thank you to the late T V Gall of Alderley for donating to the Society the accompanying photo of the last Enoggera tram. Take care, everyone Andrew McMicking, President

The magnificent mission of the Men’s Shed
Monthly news from the Brisbane Tramway Museum and the Ferny Grove Men’s Shed Men’s Sheds were first introduced into Australia in the early part of this century. They were primarily designed to provide a means for men to get together and discuss common issues, particularly relating to health, social isolation and the likes.
Many sheds have been established in a short space of time. In 2007, the Australian Men’s Shed Association was inaugurated and was based in Newcastle, NSW. Today, that association boasts over 1,000 sheds, including our shed. In some cases, the sheds that started out simply as meeting venues, where members could gather to talk, listen to a guest speaker, play cards, etc, took an extra step and workshop activities were added to their overall range of activities. Workshops provided the means for men to practice their craft skills (often not The carpentry workshop which is home to up-topossible to do in their homes due to the machinery needed or for other reasons) date machines and with the people who know how and to pass on those skills to other members. Woodcraft was a major activity to use them in this area. Normally, membership of a shed consists of men from the local area. However, because of the unique opportunities offered by the Ferny Grove Shed - for example, the association with trams - the membership is drawn from all over Brisbane and even from the Gold Coast. Members of our shed play a major role in the restoration and maintenance of the fleet of Brisbane Trams, operated by the Tramway Museum, at both a technical level and a more general level. Members include electrical specialists, mechanics, carpenters and other members who clean the trams, paint them or even polish the brassware! Overall, they keep the operating fleet operating! In addition to looking after trams, shed members are also responsible for maintaining the buildings and grounds. Furthermore, part of the philosophy of men’s sheds is that they perform some work for the community at large. In our case, we have just completed some ‘fringes’ for the local cricket club grandstand. Also we are currently undertaking a project of re-painting signs for the Scouts camping grounds at Samford and helping out the Tramway Museum with volunteers when required. There is always room for more members and any men seeking to expand their hobbies or craft skills are welcome to come and have a look. The shed is open every Tuesday from 7am until 2pm and on Friday mornings from 7am until about noon. Alternatively, call 3351 1776. www.echo-news.com.au

Shankey for Everton
Danielle Shankey. It’s a name you’ll be seeing a lot more around our thriving electorate of Everton.
Ms Shankey is Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk’s Labor candidate for Everton, and she and her husband Jon have lived on the northside for 14 years with their two children, Chloe and Grace. Originally a teacher, she values hard work, kindness and responsibility, and is known for her optimism and tenacious work-ethic. This is not the first time Ms Shankey has taken on tackling big issues facing our community. ‘In 2011, I was on the Brisbane City Council’s Disaster Management team in a senior recovery role to help communities recover from the 2011 floods. ‘It was a really hard time for so many people but we did it as a team we helped homeowners and businesses get back on their feet and that’s exactly what I and my team intend to do for Everton during this pandemic. ‘We know that the Premier has done the right thing by maintaining a firm hand on our borders. ‘I drive around the suburbs of Everton and see so many of our restaurants and cafes buzzing because they’ve been able to reopen with their COVID-19 safe plans in place. ‘I see our children back in school, studying in a familiar and supportive environment because of Queensland’s COVID-19 safe plan. ‘And I see all our other small businesses slowly emerging into the economic sunshine thanks to the support of the Palaszczuk Government. ‘Labor’s safe, steady and early health response to the pandemic
Team Shankey: Danielle and Jon with their daughters Grace and Chloe
means that we are now on track for our economic recovery and the Palaszczuk Government is already rolling out our $7 billion recovery plan across the State.’ Born and raised in Cairns, Ms Shankey has a deep understanding of the complexities of a state the size of ours and of the needs of regional, rural and urban Queenslanders. She’s led teams, championed workers, negotiated with large businesses and always stayed true to her values. ‘Lots of people have asked me why I’m running for Everton,’ she said. ‘My children are still young, eight and five, and going into politics is a big shift for me and my family. ‘I also know that a global pandemic like this one will have long-lasting and far-reaching consequences and I want to be part of the solution. I want to be a voice for Everton and ensure that everyone who lives here is listened to and supported.’ You can find Danielle at danielle.shankey@queenslandlabor. org or on 0492 855 061. ‘PARKLIFE’ - A Guide to our Local Parks
We have some of the best parks around our region and this new local parks guide will showcase just a few of them. If you are looking for some new places to take the kids or trying to find a new spot for your weekend picnic then we hope this guide will give you some inspiration! In typical Echo style, and to get the best local insight, the parks featured here are in the form of reviews from our local residents.
DUGGAN STREET PARK
Location: Duggan Street, Keperra Reviewed by Lauren Ruthenberg from Arana Hills Lauren’s review: A hidden gem! This park sits in a quiet street in Keperra, just near the golf course. All new equipment, with something for most ages; although really suited to toddlers and preschoolers. Fairly well shaded with shade sails, but also some lovely tree cover for a picnic. Arguably the best part of this park is that you can sit atop the fort and watch the trains arrive and depart from Keperra station! A ‘must go-to’ park for any little train spotter. There is also a dog park and gym equipment in the vicinity. On street parking available and this lovely little park is perfect for shy kids; it is very quiet during the week.
THE HILLS DISTRICT ALL ABILITIES PLAYGROUND
Location: 120 Olearia Street West, Everton Hills Reviewed by Lauren Inwards & Anna Williams - both from Ferny Hills Anna’s review: We love the Hills District Abilities Playground at Everton Hills, because it’s a place my boys can access playground equipment. When your legs and arms don’t function like they should, trying to be like a regular mobile kid is near impossible. The boys miss out on so much, such as swings, slides and birthday parties. But at the all abilities playground the boys physical limitations don’t for the first time limit them from participating in life. We can swing, we can slide, laugh and make friends. This playground means more to us, then just a park, it gives them the freedom to just be a regular kid.
CASCADE PARK
Location: Ellendale Estate, Cascade Place via Canvey Road, Upper Kedron Reviewed by Saskia Pit from Everton Hills The park is tucked away at the end of a cul-de-sac, making it safe for little ones. There is a unique eight metre high tower with climbing nets leading towards two six metre long tunnel slides, as well as a range of other play equipment including swings, a Piccadilly circle, a quattro see-saw, a hill slide and a hill climb. There are also picnic areas including lookout shelters, a barbeque and a kickabout space. Plus magnificant views of the nature corridors and mountains beyond to enjoy.
Lauren’s review: We have a combined family which includes six kids in primary school with one who is special needs. This park is amazing! It has enough to keep them all entertained and is ideal for a variety of ages from toddlers through to mid primary. Its fully fenced with toilets, BBQ and bubblers and even has a herb garden with misters (great for cooling down in summer) ! There’s also multiple shaded picnic tables and a nice grassy area for picnics. The park is ideally located with a large grassed area next to it so that if you have kids that want to play tiggy or frisby they can do that too. The play area includes multiple swings for different ages (where you can happily push multiple kids), is plenty of parking.

DOWNFALL CREEK RESERVE
BRADBURY PARK KEDRON
Location: 91 Kitchener Road, Kedron Reviewed by Claire Bennett from Ferny Hills Claire’s review: Bradbury Park in Kedron is a great little park where kids can scoot until their heart’s content, and let their imagination run wild. Perfect for kids 5 years and under, the 200m looped scooter track is filled with obstacles and fun features that will keep them interested, whilst also testing and improving their riding ability. The magic forest at the southern end of the park holds many secrets waiting to be discovered. Set within a bush setting, the play space encourages curiosity and inspires play. There is bench seating around the park, and lots of natural shade from the trees to set up a picnic rug under whilst being able to keep an eye on your little ones. There is on and off-street parking, an off-leash dog park next to the scooter park and a coffee shop 350m away. Unfortunately there are no toilets at the park...

Prou spons dly or FERN ed by Y’s & Black wood & Esp C resso afe Bars
Location: 815 Rode Rd, Chermside West Reviewed by Katie Maclean from Albany Creek Katie’s review: Downfall Creek Reserve is a hidden oasis tucked away alongside the busy Rode Road in Chermside. There is so much there to keep the whole family amused. A great playground with climbing frames, swings and other park equipment. There is also a half-court basketball court, lots of sheltered seating available for picnics and BBQing facilities. And yes there are toilets! However it’s not just the regular park features you find here. There is also the Downfall Creek Bushland centre located next to the playground that is full of educational and cultural displays and it is complete with it’s own community composting hub. You can also grab your free native plants here as part of the Brisbane City Council’s Native Plants Program. In addition, there is also an all abilities ’Senses Trail’ that is only 200m long and winds through the forest. There are many walking/running/biking tracks, so it is a popular spot for exercising, too. The only downfall (no pun intended!) is that, although parking seemed sufficient when we visited during the week, I would imagine during the weekends when it is a little busier, the car park would be full to bursting and it may be difficult to get a park.

What is a Good Night’s Sleep Worth to You?
Difficulty sleeping has to rank as one of the most common issues raised over the counter in pharmacy conversations. In fact, around 4 in 10 adults report frequently suffering from inadequate sleep. The health impacts of not getting enough sleep are not just limited to daytime sleepiness, with chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease linked to long term sleep deprivation.
is found. This is often true with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). People with OSA have periods of time in the night where adequate air cannot get down the airways into the lungs due to the upper airway partially or fully collapsing. Often, people with OSA will snore and this is a big clue that OSA may be present, but it can occur also in people that do not snore.
Inadequate sleep can have a myriad of causes, with many suffers spending a lot of time and money trying to get to the root cause of their sleeping issues. Our modern-day lifestyles have a lot to answer for, with changing routines, exposure to artificial light and less time for relaxation all contributing to the likelihood of difficulty getting to and staying asleep.
The only way to know for sure if you have sleep apnoea is to complete a sleep study, which can now be done in the comfort of your own home! A short screening questionnaire can be completed with the help of your pharmacist at The Clinic Hub, to see if a sleep study may be required. For the Month of October, you can perform a home sleep study through The Clinic Other causes of sleep disturbance can be more difficult Hub for just $49. to identify and often leave people feeling tired and lacking Call 07 3351 6100 for more information or visit the website energy for significant periods of time before an answer www.theclinichub.com.au for details and bookings.

Thriving Through Isolation
Social Isolation during a pandemic is about keeping you and the community physically safe, yet mental health during isolation can easily suffer. It’s as if the world has changed overnight, and we’ve all been forced to adjust to a new world of government restrictions, masks, sanitizer, and quarantine. But the problem is this: Human beings have long operated in communities and tribes, and overnight many people have had to made a radical and swift adjustment to so many areas of life - and to operate in much greater isolation throughout it all. Extended isolation can bring about feelings of disconnection from friends and the community, loneliness, boredom, and even frustration. In the climate of a worldwide pandemic, fears for health, finances, the future, and the world as we know it can create massive anxiety and deep uncertainty. On top of that, cabin-fever can set in for those working from home. We can feel cooped up and disconnected without the usual social ‘get-togethers,’ plus those extra ‘Covid kilos’ may leave us feeling podgy, unfit, and just plain unhealthy. But with some simple changes to your day and to your mindset, you may be able boost your mood and your mental wellness. Here’s 10 tricks for thriving during isolation: 1. Stick to a routine. Wake and sleep at a reasonable time, and aim for balance: Time for work, time for fun, time for others (whether that be via telephone, social media or in person where possible), time for yourself, and time for food/sleep. 2. Move your body everyday: Exercise daily – even if this means walking around your garden, the block, following a YouTube video in your lounge, or engaging in some hearty housework with the music cranking! 3. Limit exposure to the news: Too much exposure to the news can be counterproductive to mental health. While it may be important to stay informed, saturation
www.echo-news.com.au
of heavy news stories can leave us feeling gloomy and hopeless. Try watching just one segment a day, and reserving any other media time to material that is inspiring, humorous, or uplifting. 4. Get out of the house once a day: Whether it be taking a seat on your balcony, going for a walk in your courtyard or garden, the park, or just out to water some plants. The fresh air and sunshine will offer some springtime Vitamin D and clarity of mind. 5. Stay connected: Make time for connecting with friends or loved ones who you maybe can’t see in person at the moment. Pick up the phone, facetime a friend, or meet over Zoom. For you extroverts, try hosting a ‘Zoom’ party with a theme. Try for at least 30 minutes a day. 6. Designate quality, uninterrupted time with family: Schedule time to watch a movie together or play a board game together. In a usually hectic and disconnected world, see this time as an opportunity for quality, uninterrupted time with your close loved ones. 7. Start a project: Immerse yourself in a creative or household project that you can chip away at over time. Let yourself become mindfully absorbed in a task, and lose yourself in the state of flow. The sense of achievement and satisfaction you may gain might create a little boost of ‘feel-good’ chemicals in the brain. 8. Reach out for support: This is a time to reach out for support if you’re struggling. The world may be vastly different, but community supports and mental health services are available and operating. Mental health clinicians can offer phone or video conferencing options if you prefer, or if you have been advised to self-isolate. 9. Remember: We’re in this together. EVERYONE is in this – right now, and together. Open up a conversation with your loved ones about how they are feeling, and don’t be scared to talk about your worries of feelings with others. Check in on a neighbour. Start a conversation. Know that you’re not alone right now – that humankind is sharing this new strange reality. There can be a comfort in knowing that this is a shared experience. 10. Reflect on the positives: How might this time change you for the better? With these forced changes, have core values changed within you? Perhaps you have learned to value a less hectic lifestyle, savor solitude, or re-prioritize your health. Or perhaps you have realized the value of quality time with loved ones. What’s good about this time, or how will you move forward in your life differently? This is a time to make room for growth and evolution – for mankind, and for you too. For Mental Health Services, call Pine Rivers Private Hospital – 07 3881 7222 – Strathpine, Brisbane. Working from home - a pain in the neck?
Neck pain is an extremely common complaint among desk workers and at Keperra Physiotherapy Clinic they have seen a large increase in neck pain and headaches with the move to working from home during COVID. Much of this is neck pain is associated with workstation set-up and a change in daily routine with zoom meetings meaning workers are moving around a lot less. Sustained static postures can overload the joints, discs and associated muscles in the neck and upper back. Poor posture increases the likelihood of pain.Headaches commonly occur as pain from the upper neck refers into the base of the skull, forehead and temple areas. As many of us will continue to work from home for at least part of the working week it’s important to consider what you can do to minimize the chances of postural neck pain and headaches. Here are a few tips below:-. • Use a good quality office chair with adequate lumbar (low back) support. • Ensure your workstation and monitor are at the correct height. When sitting upright your eyes should meet the monitor screen somewhere in its top one third. Your monitor should be approximately an arm’s length from you when sitting upright.

Signs your elderly relative is no longer safe living alone
Sudden changes in behaviour may be a sign that your elderly relative is no longer safe living alone. Little signs may indicate your elderly relative needs more support to remain independent and healthy at home. 1. Weight loss Weight loss is common as we age, but sudden changes in weight can be a sign that your elderly relative is not eating well, and can signal the early stages of a cognitive illness. Your relative may have forgotten to eat regularly, or not remembered to get to the shops. Check that the pantry and fridge are well-stocked and ensure meals are a suitable portion size and contain enough nutritional value. It may be time to arrange home delivered meals or have a carer help prepare the meals at home. 2. Personal hygiene Showering and wearing fresh clothing each day shows your relative has a healthy functioning brain and a positive outlook. If clothing is being worn for days on end and showering is becoming less frequent, it could be a sign that your relative is not functioning as well as they could. For someone with dementia or Alzheimer’s, remembering all the steps involved with taking a shower may be difficult. Going to the toilet may also be a challenge if the brain’s normal signals are not finely tuned. 3. Vision and Hearing Loss Does your relative turn up the volume on the TV to a deafening level? Have they stopped attending their book
Page 32- October 2020, The Hills Echo
club? Perhaps you’ve noticed they seem more apprehensive about driving? While some hearing and vision loss is considered a normal part of ageing, the individual may not be aware that these senses are diminishing. If your parent is struggling to hear normal conversational volume or no longer reads words on a page like they used to, they should have their eyes and hearing tested. 4. Reduced social activity and low mood Depression and anxiety are serious health issues for older people. Symptoms of depression can include loss of appetite, reduced social engagements, poor sleep, fatigue, low energy, increased levels of pain and irritability. The loss of a spouse or friend can trigger a depressed mood, or it could be a symptom of a cognitive decline as the person struggles with confusion and frustration on a daily basis. With a disease like dementia, angry outbursts may be common. Someone with dementia often becomes extremely defensive or suspicious of those around them — including close family and friends — as they can’t distinguish familiar faces from a stranger. Consult a GP about the various treatment options. 5. Changes in home cleanliness A cluttered house isn’t necessarily a bad sign. However, if your parent was always very tidy and liked order, piles of unopened mail, increased clutter, an unusual amount of dirty dishes and general mess is a possible sign of an underlying cognitive or emotional issue. Additionally, watch out for items showing up in strange places around the home, like food or drinks placed in the dishwasher instead of the refrigerator. If mail is unopened, bills may not be paid on time, or important appointments maybe missed. 6. No concept of time Many people with dementia are no longer able to distinguish night from day and lose track of days. For example, they may call in the middle of the night confused why you haven’t picked them up for their 10am appointment in 3 days’ time. Sleep patterns are disrupted, so poor sleep may be another sign of cognitive decline. Your parent’s GP can discuss these symptoms and offer advice. If you’ve noticed some of these signs with your parents or elderly relative, it may signal that they need some further assistance to remain independent, safe and healthy at home.

Fourteen years of fitness in Ferny Grove!
Some of the ladies from the Fabulous, Physical, Fun family
A huge congratulations to local fitness studio, Fab Physical Fun who are celebrating their fourteenth year in operation this month! Local fitness studio owner, Bonnie Cunial says”I can’t believe it’s been 14 years since I began my fitness training in a local park, with only four clients attending! I was in my early 50’s, and it was my desire to help clients around my age become fitter and stronger.” Today Bonnie’s FabFun studio is thriving, with specialisation in mature age fitness with small classes. After having closed her business for three months, Bonnie and her four enthusiastic trainers are back presenting 20 face-to-face classes per week. A Covid-safe policy is in place and she also has virtual classes on offer, if the studio is difficult to attend for whatever reason. The studio is ideal if you are new to exercise, and perfect if you are experiencing debilitating health issues, such as diabetes, heart disease or arthritis. Say goodbye to feeling unfit and inflexible, and say hello to a strong and supple body. To celebrate the 14th anniversary of FabFun, Bonnie would like to invite new clients to join her studio in October. As a ‘Thank You’ gift, you will receive a beautiful, soft touch pen and a journal to use on your fitness journey. Attend your first class for free, or try any three classes for just $39. To book an obligation free, phone consultation, or discuss your health and fitness goals, visit www.fabphysicalfun. com.au and click on ‘Book a Call with Bonnie’. Your body will love you for it!

Stories from the Samford Range
News and stories from the Samford Museum The most popular transport link between the northern suburbs and nearby Samford districts is Samford Road across Samford Range. H. H. Payne was the first to cross the range by bullock dray when he and his son, H. T. Payne, were taking up land at Wights Mountain after 1865. Traffic consisted of bullock and horse teams hauling logs to Brisbane sawmills and wagon loads of bananas to markets in Brisbane for railing to southern capital cities. Loaded wagons were hauled to a level section of road on the Samford side of today’s Bygott Road (known then as ‘Paddy’s Pinch’), where they were left overnight. The horses spelled in near-by farmers’ properties, ready for a very early Elope and get married on my beautifully decorated deck in Ferny Hills

start the following morning. Logs were hauled by bullock teams, then horse teams took the load on to its destination. Passenger vehicles included carts, sulkies, and drays. Teamsters had signals - whip cracks - to warn other teams of their presence coming towards Samford. The outbound team was given sole use of the road to the top of the range. Dr. Marks is understood to have driven the first car across the range. Mr. Scheldt, who was working on the road, offered to tow the car with his horse and dray, should the car not manage to make the steep grade. The offer was not required! Motor vehicles became more popular as time went on, however numbers were not sufficient - even in the 1940’s and early 1950’s - to stop local children setting up their cricket wickets (4 gallon kerosene tins) in the Main Street. They would only move them only when a vehicle was heard approaching! Cattle were driven by drovers on horse back across the range at night to the Samford butcher’s slaughter yards. Major improvements and surface sealing took place in the late 1940’s and 1950’s. For more information contact the museum at info@ samfordmuseum.com.au

Samford mum wins gold at 2020 AusMumpreneur Awards
Fiona Holmstrom from STEM Punks has been named as the Making A Difference in Education Award winner.
The awards were held online via Zoom where thousands of talented mums in business from all over the country tuned in to the livestream to support and encourage other Australian mumpreneurs. Fiona said she was excited to win in her category in the 2020 AusMumpreneur Awards in such a challenging time. Fiona says: ‘To be recognised as a leader in the field of STEM Education, as well as for making a difference in STEM Education, means a lot to us, especially after taking the business in new Fiona Holmstrom directions at the onset of COVID.’ On top of the gold, Fiona won in every category she was a finalist in, taking out Silver in the Rising Star category, and a Bronze in the Digital Innovations category. The AusMumpreneur Awards are presented by The Women’s Business School and were created to inspire, celebrate and provide a community for Australian entrepreneurs, like Fiona Holmstrom. Now more than ever Australian women need inspirational role models and a safe and supportive space to connect online, Peace Mitchell, cofounder of The Women’s Business School said. ‘These awards are all about recognising the growing number of mums who are achieving outstanding business success while balancing motherhood, states Mitchell. ‘I was blown away by the courage, resilience and entrepreneurial spirit of the award winners and I know that they will provide great inspiration for other women considering starting their own business.’ This is the eleventh year of the AusMumpreneur Awards, with the business mum community growing at lightning speed as mothers look for opportunities to join the ranks of small business owners in search of more flexibility, financial freedom and family time. The Women’s Business School co-founder, Katy Garner, adds: ‘The awards show the passion of women who want to fulfil their entrepreneurial dreams as well as being great mums. The number of women starting businesses has continued to grow in 2020! Of the 670,000 women operating a small business in Australia currently, around 50 per cent are mums with children at home. We are proud to be the number one community for mumpreneurs and showcasing the best and the brightest each year through these awards.’ ‘We are delighted that Fiona Holmstrom has won this award, as she has created an outstanding business and is an inspirational role model and ambassador for mums in business everywhere. We wish her and all our amazing AusMumpreneur Award winners every success.’ The complete list of winners can be found at: https:// 43 TIMMS ROAD, EVERTON HILLS ausmumpreneur.com/2020-ausmumpreneur-awardswinners/ For more information on the AusMumpreneur Awards visit: www.ausmumpreneur.com

Counsellor’s Column with Robin Botic
Dear Robin, I am trying to find a different way to deal with my mother and her woes. She shifted in with my little sister and her husband a few years ago. The idea was that the sale of her house would help them buy a bigger and better joint-home and she could look after my sister’s three kids so that my sister and husband could both work. I have to admit, I am a bit dirty on this, no one’s ever offered to help us out like that. We have done well though. My husband is a great provider and we have worked hard to get where we are today. My sister married a drop kick of a guy, bought a house and had three kids that they couldn’t really afford to have. When she screamed, we all ran to her side. Mum still does, I’ve learnt not to. It has really annoyed me over the years that when I needed help with my two boys Mum was always too tired because she had been helping my sister and then I would feel I could not really ask. All this has made me very resentful and even more so now since mum has become their live-in nanny and general slave about the place (her words, not mine). She hardly ever has time to come and visit me and see her other grandchildren. She constantly whinges about her situation, my sister’s demands, her lack of privacy and lack of time to herself. She asks for my advice but when I suggest some alternative to her behaviour and the setting of some boundaries, she fobs me off with why she can’t and why she has to be there for my sister. I don’t know why I bother. I find the whole situation incredibly frustrating. I struggle to feel civil towards my sister and her husband. The only way I get to see my mother and my kids to see their grandmother and cousins is if I go there. I am seriously over it and the resentment I am feeling is burning me up. Do I just do as my husband suggest’s ‘divorce them all’ or do I just shut up and put up with it? Shelley Dear Shelley Divorce is a good option, but that would be more about divorcing yourself from your thoughts and feelings that make it so difficult to deal with their behaviour - particularly your mother’s. Your choices are really no different to your mother’s. Both of you have tried to problem solve for your sister at the expense of yourselves. Your mother and maybe because she is a mother has not learnt to step back from your sister’s demands, the same way that you have.

Perhaps a bit of sibling rivalry and, paradoxically, the resentment you feel towards your sister has opened your eyes to the family dynamics. You, Shelley, I am hypothesising, are the ‘older, more responsible one’, the one who gets on, does, fixes, is more independent, and who because of this doesn’t seem to need as much help. Often, because of this ‘responsible’ role we take on we find it difficult to ask for help. Then we feel unappreciated when what we do, or the help we won’t ask for, is not recognised. Your sister gets attention, support and recognition through her cries for help. Your mothers need to fix things for your sister is no different than your need to fix things for your mother. Playing the hero/martyr is also part of that. It is a bit like: ‘I am being such an amazing person, look what I am doing for my daughter even though it is killing me’. If this is what is unconsciously running her sense of self and making her feel ‘useful’ or ‘good’ about what she can do – why would she change it? How much does your sense of self esteem also rely on being able to fix things? If you identify yourself with this, then rejection of the ‘fixes’ feels like rejection of you personally. It is really about the other and why, in terms of who they think they are, that they are making the choices they do. Seeing this is the first step in divorcing yourself of all those assumptions about the self and other. This then makes it a lot easier to just listen and not feel the need to offer help or advice. For you to be able to express your feelings to your mother about your need for support, recognition, and the desire to see her on your own turf is another important step in this process. Robin

Unfortunately, our club has continued to cease holding meetings since the onset of the coronavirus due to many of our members being in the age group susceptible to catching the virus. Our committee met on the 18th September to review the situation. It was decided that we will have our first meeting on the 9th October 2020. Depending on the response from our members, we will decide on the following weeks events. One of the difficulties we will face is the social distancing, which I feel will be with us for a while. Also, the amount of preparation needed before and after any meeting to comply with Government directives is quite considerable! In the mean time, be careful and stay healthy. We wish a speedy recovery to all of our sick members. Please give us a call if you need any further information. Till next time, Mike 0406 601 589

Everton News
from your State Member for Everton TIM MANDER
With a State Election upon us, it’s important that, as a member of the Opposition, that I make you aware of the plans of the alternate LNP government. I believe that this election is about who has the best plan to drag us out of the economic recession we are currently experiencing. The Covid-19 virus has had a significant negative impact on our economy. However, Queensland’s economy was on its knees prior to the pandemic. Under the Labor Government over the past five years, we have had the highest unemployment in the nation, lowest level of business confidence, highest number of bankruptcies and highest debt. If Labor couldn’t manage the economy before the virus struck, what chance have they got now to stimulate the economy? A strong economy means more jobs. As the Deputy Leader of the LNP, I am proud to be part of a team that has a bold plan for the next decade not just the next few years (go to www.deb2020.com.au for the LNP’s plan).
LNP’s Crime Crackdown
LNP’s Youth Crime Plan
If the LNP wins the next state election on October 31, Youth Crime will be tackled by tough new laws and an overhaul to the justice system. As part of the LNP’s comprehensive youth crime plan: • Youth offenders on bail will be monitored 24/7 • Mandatory detention for third convictions • Community Payback Farm program will be established to rehabilitate repeat offenders • “Breaching Bail” by youth offenders will become an offence so there are consequences to offending • Justice reinvestment will be trialled to increase early intervention
LNP will deliver 170 more police for Brisbane
I’m horrified that an 18-year-old woman in my electorate experienced an attempted carjacking at Eatons Hill after she left work. The LNP will recruit an extra 170 police for Brisbane and establish new taskforces to crackdown on gang violence and car-jackings. Car crime, including car-jacking, has surged under the State Labor Government. Everyone in the community has a right to feel safe in their home and on the streets. The LNP will ensure our police have the resources and the tough laws they need to do their job and keep Queenslanders safe. These new taskforces would be established immediately after the October 31 election.
Contact Tim Under the Labor Government crime has exploded in North Brisbane over the last 5 years: • Robbery increased by 80% • Break-ins up by 41% • Car theft increased by 84% • Shop stealing up by 58%

Construction at Beech Street Bridge, Ferny Grove is in full swing
Beech Street Pedestrian Bridge Project Last week I was able to conduct an onsite to see the progress of the new Beech Street bridge in Ferny Grove. Council had identified the need to provide a connection between Beech Street and Nelson Place over Cedar Creek to improve safety and accessibility for local residents. The 21 metre long bridge, with a three metre-wide concrete deck, will provide access for pedestrians and cyclists travelling to Ferny Grove State School, shops and a safe connection to the surrounding area.

The Ferny Report Mark Furner M.P.
State Member for Ferny Grove
The latest concept art for the Ferny Grove TOD Ferny Grove Transit Oriented Development The Transit Oriented Development (TOD) at the Ferny Grove Railway Station is due to start construction shortly (pending Brisbane City Council approval). The TOD is an exciting new development which will utilise the existing Ferny Grove Railway Station site to build extra parking spaces and extra residential options, as well as, cinemas, retail, dining spaces and a new day-care centre. Most significantly, the TOD will inject around $120 million into our local economy and will boost local employment by more than 1,400 full time jobs. Over 700 of those jobs will
www.echo-news.com.au
be during the build with over 700 extra ongoing jobs in the precinct once the build is complete. The TOD is a unique investment in our local economy with private enterprise contributing $100 million and the Federal Government and the State Government working together to fund 400 extra car spaces for commuters. This increase in parking will ease the parking pressure on all stations on the Ferny Grove Line – from Grovely to Windsor. Male & Female Change Rooms Delivered!
The new change rooms have been delivered. In 2017 I made an election commitment to provide new male and female change rooms and today I am proud to say those change rooms have now been delivered! Recently I caught up with Russell Morrison from the Arana Ascot Hockey Club, Perry Hunt from the Ferny Grove Falcons and Andrew Middleton from the Ferny Districts Cricket Club to check out this fantastic new facility. The change rooms will be a life-changer for all the kids who use the Ferny Grove Sports Fields for many years to come. This project was led by AFL Queensland and was delivered by the Queensland Government working together with Brisbane City Council. Local High Schools constructions near completion The major constructions at Ferny Grove State High School and Mitchelton State High School are both nearing completion and are due to be delivered for the start of the 2021 school year. Ferny is building a new 2,000 seat performing arts and sports auditorium while Mitchie is constructing a new coding lab and redeveloping its existing school hall. Prepoll will open on 19 October and will operate from 9am to 6pm Monday, Wednesday and Friday; 9am to 9pm Tuesday and Thursday; and 9am to 5pm on Saturday 24th October. Samford Road Intersection Upgrade Project The Osborne Road intersection is currently undergoing survey work as part of the Samford Road Intersection Upgrade Project. Last month the Department of Transport and Main Roads completed the removal of the right-hand turn into Pickering Street with upgrades to the Glenholm Street intersection beginning next year. The signalling changes outside the Enoggera Barracks were completed in 2018. These four intersections were identified as part of the Samford Road Traffic Flow Study commissioned by the Queensland Government at my request in 2017.
